A waveguide Bragg grating (WBG) provides a flexible way for measurement, and it could even be used to measure body temperature like e-skin. We designed and compared three structures of WBG with the grating period, etching depth, and duty cycle. The two-sided WBG was fabricated. An experimental platform based on photonic integrated interrogator was set up and the experiment on the two-sided WBG was performed. Results show that the two-sided WBG can be used to measure temperature changes over the range of 35–42C, with a temperature measurement error of 0.1C. Electro-optic (EO) modulators are typically made of inorganic materials such as lithium niobate; the replacement of these modulators with organic EO materials is a promising alternative due to their lower half-wave voltage (Vπ), ease of handling, and relatively low cost. We propose the design and fabrication of a push-pull polymer electro-optic modulator with voltage-length parameters (VπL) of 1.28 V·cm. The device uses a Mach–Zehnder structure and is made of a second-order nonlinear optical host-guest polymer composed of a CLD-1 chromophore and PMMA polymer. The experimental results show that the loss is 1.7 dB, Vπ drops to 1.6 V, and the modulation depth is 0.637 dB at 1550 nm. The results of a preliminary study show that the device is capable of efficiently detecting electrocardiogram (ECG) signals with performance on par with that of commercial ECG devices.

Wearable technology constitutes a pioneering and leading innovation and a market development platform worldwide for technologies worn close to the body. Wearable optical fiber sensors have the most value for advanced multiparameter sensing in digital health monitoring systems. We demonstrated the first example of a fully integrated optical interrogator. By integrating all the optical components on a silicon photonic chip, we realized a stable, miniaturized and low-cost optical interrogator for the continuous, dynamic, and long-term acquisition of human physiological signals. The interrogator was integrated in a wristband, enabling the detection of body temperature and heart sounds. Our study paves the way for the development of watch-sized integrated wearable optical interrogators with potential applications in health monitoring and can be directly exploited for the customized design of ultraminiaturized optical interrogator systems., H.L. acknowledges the support from the Tianjin Talent Special Support Program. We demonstrated the design of two different structures, a two-sided structure and a top-surface structure, of glucose waveguide Bragg grating (WBG) sensors in a single-mode silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chip. A two-sided WBG structure was fabricated, and chip preparation was realized by lithography and other processes. A photonic platform for testing the two-sided WBG using glucose was built and completed. When the blood glucose concentration changed by 1 mg/mL, the two-sided WBG had a wavelength offset of 78 pm. The experimental results show that the two structures can achieve the sensing of different blood glucose concentrations. The two-sided WBG had better sensing performance and thus has a wide range of application prospects.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women globally. The residual network (ResNet) evolution of electrocardiogram (ECG) technology has contributed to our understanding of cardiac physiology. We propose an artificial intelligence-enabled ECG algorithm based on an improved ResNet for a wearable ECG. The system hardware consists of a wearable ECG with conductive fabric electrodes, a wireless ECG acquisition module, a mobile terminal App, and a cloud diagnostic platform. The algorithm adopted in this study is based on an improved ResNet for the rapid classification of different types of arrhythmia. First, we visualize ECG data and convert one-dimensional ECG signals into two-dimensional images using Gramian angular fields. Then, we improve the ResNet-50 network model, add multistage shortcut branches to the network, and optimize the residual block. The ReLu activation function is replaced by a scaled exponential linear units (SELUs) activation function to improve the expression ability of the model. Finally, the images are input into the improved ResNet network for classification. The average recognition rate of this classification algorithm against seven types of arrhythmia signals (atrial fibrillation, atrial premature beat, ventricular premature beat, normal beat, ventricular tachycardia, atrial tachycardia, and sinus bradycardia) is 98.3%.

Background: Electrocardiogram (ECG) indicates the occurrence of various cardiac diseases, and the accurate classification of ECG signals is important for the automatic diagnosis of arrhythmia. Methods: This paper presents a novel classification method based on multifeatures by combining waveform morphology and frequency-domain statistical analysis, which offer a better classification accuracy and minimise the time spent for classifying signals. A wavelet packet is used to decompose a de-noised ECG signal, and the singular value, maximum value and standard deviation of the decomposed wavelet packet coefficients are calculated to obtain the frequency domain feature space. The slope threshold method is applied to detect R peak and calculate RR intervals, and the first two RR intervals are extracted as time-domain features. The fusion feature space is composed of time-domain and frequency-domain features. Results: A combination of support vector machine (SVM) with the help of grid search and waveform morphological analysis is applied to complete nine types of ECG signal classification. Computer simulations show that the accuracy of the proposed algorithm on multiple types of arrhythmia databases can reach 96.67%.Conclusions: The proposed approach classified the arrhythmias of ECG signals with promising results. The experimental results reveal that classification accuracy can reach 96.67% when the penalty factor C is 9.1896, and the kernel function parameter g is 0.10882.

The resistivity of the undoped In0.53Ga0.47As photoconductive semiconductor switch has been measured over a temperature range of 5–300 K. The experimental temperature characteristic curve of the resistivity exhibits unimodality, and the peak resistivity is more than two orders of magnitude greater than that at 300 K. Based on the two-level model (shallow donor impurities level and deep defect level), we analyzed carrier relaxation rate due to scattering by ionized impurity and polar optical phonons. It is found that the unusually thermal characteristics is dominated by scattering of donor states by ionized impurity scattering and polar optical phonon scattering. The theoretical result is in very good agreement with the experimental results. Our results provide quantitative understanding of charge relaxation in InxGa1−xAs-based devices. Understanding of thermal properties of dark resistance can be used to optimize InxGa1−xAs-based electronic and photonic devices performance in different temperature regimes.

PURPOSE The removal of Cherenkov light in an optical dosimetry system is an important process to ensure accurate dosimetry without compromising spatial resolution. Many solutions have been presented in the literature, each with advantages and disadvantages. We present a methodology to remove Cherenkov light from a scintillator fiber optic dosimeter in a pulsed megavoltage x-ray beam using the temporal waveform across the pulse. METHODS A sample waveform of Cherenkov light can be measured by exposing only the fiber to the beam. By assuming that the Cherenkov waveform closely matches the intensity of incident radiation, this waveform can be convoluted with the instantaneous scintillation response function to generate an expected scintillation signal. By finding the least-squares fit between these two functions and the experimental data, the estimated Cherenkov contribution can be subtracted off the net signal. This can be applied for arbitrarily complex Cherenkov waveforms (within the 2 ns timing resolution of the data acquisition), and in fact, the results suggest more fluctuations in the waveforms provide a better fit to data. RESULTS Four beam profiles for different field sizes and energies were found with this method. They closely matched references data measured with ionization chamber with average differences across the beam no more than 4%. Noisy waveforms are assumed to be the primary cause of differences between the analyzed scintillator and IC results. We propose methods for improving the results and optimizing the data acquisition and analysis processes. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate that it is possible and effective with a single probe to use function fitting of expected data to experimental to remove a complicated Cherenkov signal from the net light signal in pulsed-beam optical dosimetry.

Discussion continues over various aspects of sunscreen science: regulation, test methods, sun protection factor (SPF), labelling claims, potentially harmful components, among others. In this paper the UV transmission properties of a number of commercial sunscreens have been determined at constant sunscreen film thickness under different local UV Index conditions. The data demonstrate difficulties facing the public and the sunscreen industry as a whole, even though SPF values and other data stated on the sunscreen packaging are assumed to be correct according to standard testing methods. This work has shown that at realistic application rates the critical factors are the intensity of the incident solar radiation and the accumulated erythema UV dose transmitted over time. In one example, on 'Extreme' UV Index days, an SPF 30 sunscreen under test transmitted one minimal erythema dose (MED) of UV in only 35 min. In another example, although it should not, in theory, transmit one MED until several hours of exposure, this level was reached in 1 h by an SPF 50 sunscreen under these typical Australian summer conditions (UV Index 12) in Wollongong, NSW (34.4°S). Such properties could have severe consequnces if these sunscreens were used by individuals with Fitzpatrick Skin Type 1, organ transplant recipients or other immuno-compromised individuals.

This research investigated a usage of multispectral imaging to predict sugar content of ‘Fuji’ apples. A visible/near-infrared spectroscopy (350–1200 nm) was used to select optimal wavelengths for the multispectral imaging system. The spectral data were analyzed using the backward interval partial least square to generate a subset composed of several most sensitive wavebands. Four optimal wavelengths (461 nm, 469 nm, 947 nm and 1049 nm) were determined from this subset using stepwise multiple linear regression. A multispectral imaging system was developed based on these effective wavelengths. The scattering areas of the multispectral images were extracted by using the image histogram and the camera response function. The scattering profiles were calculated from the scattering areas by radial averaging. The modified Lorentzian distribution function was used to fit the scattering profiles. The parameters of the Lorentzian functions were used as the data base of multiple linear regression to create the prediction model. The multiple linear regression model predicted sugar content with r = 0.8861 and RMSE (root-mean-square-error of calibration) = 0.8738° Brix.

The irradiation of scintillator-fiber optic dosimeters by clinical LINACs results in the measurement of scintillation and Cerenkov radiation. In scintillator-fiber optic dosimetry, the scintillation and Cerenkov radiation responses are separated to determine the dose deposited in the scintillator volume. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were trained and applied in a novel single probe method for the temporal separation of scintillation and Cerenkov radiation. Six dose profiles were measured using the ANN, with the dose profiles compared to those measured using background subtraction and an ionisation chamber. The average dose discrepancy of the ANN measured dose was 2.2% with respect to the ionisation chamber dose and 1.2% with respect to the background subtraction measured dose, while the average dose discrepancy of the background subtraction dose was 1.6% with respect to the ionisation chamber dose. The ANNs performance was degraded when compared with background subtraction, arising from an inaccurate model used to synthesise ANN training data.

A new analysis method for the rtOSL of BeO ceramics is presented, using temporal curve fitting of an expected rtOSL signal to measured rtOSL signals. The presented technique does not require heavy signal averaging to determine the OSL bleaching correction associated with the rtOSL method, reducing uncertainties in the post-correction rtOSL. The corrected rtOSL signal was demonstrated to be linear with dose, and dose-rate independent. The presented technique is expected to be applicable for many other dosimeters capable of the rtOSL technique. The presented technique achieved relative uncertainties in the corrected rtOSL between 3.4% and 6.5%. The initial measurements are promising, but uncertainties are required to be further improved upon before the technique can be used clinically. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Plastic scintillation dosimeters (PSDs) possess many desirable qualities for dosimetry with LINACs. These qualities are expected to make PSDs effective for MRI-LINAC dosimetry, however little research has been conducted investigating their dosimetric performance with MRI-LINACs. In this work, an in-house PSD was used to measure 8 beam profiles with an in-line MRI-LINAC, compared with film measurements. One dimensional global gamma indices ( γ ) and corresponding γ pass rates were calculated to compare PSD and film profiles for the 1%/1 mm, 2%/2 mm and 3%/3 mm criterion. The mean global pass rates were 85.8%, 97.5% and 99.4% for the 1%/1 mm, 2%/2 mm and 3%/3 mm criteria, respectively. The majority of the γ failures occurred in the penumbral regions. Penumbra widths were measured to be slightly narrower with the PSD compared to film, however, the uncertainties in the measured penumbra widths brought the PSD and film penumbra widths into agreement. Differences in dose were calculated between the PSD and film, and remained within 2.2% global agreement for the central regions and 1.5% global agreement for out of field regions. These values for range of agreement were similar to the those reported in the literature for other dosimeters which are trusted for relative MRI-LINAC dosimetry.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. External beam radiation therapy is one of the most important modalities for the treatment of cancers. Synchrotron microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is a novel pre-clinical therapy that uses highly spatially fractionated X-ray beams to target tumours, allowing doses much higher than conventional radiotherapies to be delivered. A dosimeter with a high spatial resolution is required to provide the appropriate quality assurance for MRT. This work presents a plastic scintillator fibre optic dosimeter with a one-dimensional spatial resolution of 20 µm, an improvement on the dosimeter with a resolution of 50 µm that was demonstrated in previous work. The ability of this probe to resolve microbeams of width 50 µm has been demonstrated. The major limitations of this method were identified, most notably the low-light signal resulting from the small sensitive volume, which made valley dose measurements very challenging. A titanium-based reflective paint was used as a coating on the probe to improve the light collection, but a possible effect of the high-Zmaterial on the probes water-equivalence has been identified. The effect of the reflective paint was a 28.5 ± 4.6% increase in the total light collected; it did not affect the shape of the depth-dose profile, nor did it explain an over-response observed when used to probe at low depths, when compared with an ionization chamber. With improvements to the data acquisition, this probe design has the potential to provide a water-equivalent, inexpensive dosimetry tool for MRT.

Radiation therapy, which uses X-rays to destroy or injure cancer cells, has become one of the most important modalities to treat the primary cancer or advanced cancer. High resolution, water equivalent and passive X-ray dosimeters are highly desirable for developing quality assurance (QA) systems for novel cancer therapy like microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) which is currently under development. Here we present the latest developments of high spatial resolution scintillator based photonic dosimeters, and their applications to clinical external radiation beam therapies: specifically high energy linear accelerator (LINAC) photon beams and low energy synchrotron photon beams. We have developed optical fiber dosimeters with spatial resolutions ranging from 50 to 500 mm and tested them with LINAC beams and synchrotron microbeams. For LINAC beams, the fiberoptic probes were exposed to a 6 MV, 10 cm by 10 cm Xray field and, the beam profiles as well as the depth dose profiles were measured at a source-to-surface distance (SSD) of 100 cm. We have also demonstrated the possibility for temporally separating Cherenkov light from the pulsed LINAC scintillation signals. Using the 50 mm fiber probes, we have successfully resolved the microstructures of the microbeams generated by the imaging and medical beamline (IMBL) at the Australian Synchrotron and measured the peak-to-valley dose ratios (PVDRs). In this paper, we summarize the results we have achieved so far, and discuss the possible solutions to the issues and challenges we have faced, also highlight the future work to further enhance the performances of the photonic dosimeters.

This paper introduces a technical approach of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) based particle image velocimetry (PIV). It is designed to measure transient flows with different scales of velocity by capturing multiple particle images in one exposure. These images are separated by different wavelengths, and thus the pulse separation time is not influenced by the frame rate of the camera. A triple-pulsed PIV system has been created in order to prove the feasibility of WDM-PIV. This is demonstrated in a sieve plate extraction column model by simultaneously measuring the fast flow in the downcomer and the slow vortices inside the plates. A simple displacement/velocity field combination method has also been developed. The constraints imposed by WDM-PIV are limited wavelength choices of available light sources and cameras. The usage of WDM technique represents a feasible way to realize multiple-pulsed PIV.

A novel method is presented to correct the non-linearity of real-time optically stimulated luminescence (rtOSL), investigated for a fibre-coupled BeO dosimetry system. The presented method applies novel kinetic modelling techniques to model the time-resolved optically stimulated luminescence, and least squares deconvolution to transform the measured rtOSL into the absorbed dose in BeO. This correction, termed the deconvolution correction, is compared against the Δ rtOSL and exponential correction methods. These rtOSL correction methods multiply the measured rtOSL by a correction function. In the Δ rtOSL correction, this correction function is theoretically derived, whereas the exponential correction approximates the correction function as an exponential growth with respect to time. The deconvolution correction method had a mean dose difference of 1.5%, improving upon the 4.4% and 4.1% achieved by the Δ rtOSL and exponential correction methods, respectively. These prior methods correct the measured rtOSL through multiplication with a sensitivity correction function. The deconvolution corrected responses were characterised by a 1.9% standard deviation with the expected doses, and an average root mean squared error (RMSE) of 2.0% between the corrected rtOSL signal and the modelled time-dependent accumulated dose. In comparison, the Δ rtOSL had a standard deviation of 6.4% and an average RMSE of 7.3% between the corrected rtOSL signal and the modelled time-dependent accumulated dose, while the exponential correction had a standard deviation of 5.4% and a 4.6% average RMSE between the corrected rtOSL and the time-dependent accumulated dose. To determine whether the deconvolution was feasible for real-time correction of measured rtOSL, a computational simulation of the real-time measurement and correction was performed. The maximum computation time for the deconvolution correction was 18 ms, demonstrating that the deconvolution correction is feasible for real-time correction of the rtOSL.

Cherenkov radiation is generated in optical systems exposed to ionising radiation. In water or plastic devices, if the incident radiation has components with high enough energy (for example, electrons or positrons with energy greater than 175 keV), Cherenkov radiation will be generated. A scintillator dosimeter that collects optical light, guided by optical fibre, will have Cherenkov radiation generated throughout the length of fibre exposed to the radiation field and compromise the signal. We present a novel algorithm to separate Cherenkov radiation signal that requires only a single probe, provided the radiation source is pulsed, such as a linear accelerator in external beam radiation therapy. We use a slow scintillator (BC-444) that, in a constant beam of radiation, reaches peak light output after 1 microsecond, while the Cherenkov signal is detected nearly instantly. This allows our algorithm to separate the scintillator signal from the Cherenkov signal. The relative beam profile and depth dose of a linear accelerator 6 MV X-ray field were reconstructed using the algorithm. The optimisation method improved the fit to the ionisation chamber data and improved the reliability of the measurements. The algorithm was able to remove 74% of the Cherenkov light, at the expense of only 1.5% scintillation light. Further characterisation of the Cherenkov radiation signal has the potential to improve the results and allow this method to be used as a simpler optical fibre dosimeter for quality assurance in external beam therapy.

Semi-Dirac materials such as a $TiO_{2}/VO_{2}$ have been shown to possess a parabolic energy-momentum dispersion in the x direction and linear dispersion in the y direction. This unique energy-momentum dispersion leads to many anisotropic effects. Here, we demonstrate a strong anisotropic photo-mixing effect in such systems which can be used to control the strength of the photo-response.

Experimental work has shown that a bandgap can be opened in Dirac semi-metals via an elemental doping scheme. Here we demonstrate how a finite bandgap relaxes the selection rule in phonon scattering, enhancing the power of hot carrier relaxation in a Dirac semi-metal.

Microbeam radiation therapy is a novel pre-clinical external beam therapy that uses high-brilliance synchrotron X-rays to deliver the necessary high dose rates. The unique conditions of high dose rate and high spatial fractionation demand a new class of detector to experimentally measure important beam quality parameters. Here we demonstrate the highest spatial resolution plastic scintillator fibre-optic dosimeter found in the literature to date and tested it on the Imaging and Medical Beam-Line at the Australian Synchrotron in a X-ray beam where the irradiation dose rate was 4435 Gy/s. With a one-dimensional spatial resolution of 10 μm the detector is able to resolve the individual microbeams (53.7 ± 0.4 μm wide), and measure the peak-to-valley dose ratio to be 55 ± 17. We also investigate the role of radioluminescence in the optical fibre used to transport the scintillation photons, and conclude that it creates a significant contribution to the total light detected.

Convolutional neural network (CNN) type artificial intelligences were trained to estimate the Cerenkov radiation present in the temporal response of a LINAC irradiated scintillator-fiber optic dosimeter. The CNN estimate of Cerenkov radiation is subtracted from the combined scintillation and Cerenkov radiation temporal response of the irradiated scintillator-fiber optic dosimeter, giving the sole scintillation signal, which is proportional to the scintillator dose. The CNN measured scintillator dose was compared to the background subtraction measured scintillator dose and ionisation chamber measured dose. The dose discrepancy of the CNN measured dose was on average 1.4% with respect to the ionisation chamber measured dose, matching the 1.4% average dose discrepancy of the background subtraction measured dose with respect to the ionisation chamber measured dose. The developed CNNs had an average time of 3 ms to calculate scintillator dose, permitting the CNNs presented to be applicable for dosimetry in real time.

Plastic scintillation dosimeters (PSDs) have many properties that make them desirable for relative dosimetry with MRI-LINACs. An in-house PSD, Farmer ionisation chamber and Gafchromic EBT3 film were used to measure central axis percentage depth dose distributions (PDDs) at the Australian MRI-LINAC Mean errors were calculated between each detector’s responses, where the in-house PSD was on average within 0.7% of the Farmer chamber and 1.4% of film, while the Farmer chamber and film were on average within 1.1% of each other. However, the PSD systematically over-estimated the dose as depth increased, approaching a maximum overestimation of the order of 3.5% for the smallest field size measured. This trend was statistically insignificant for all other field sizes measured; further investigation is required to determine the source of this effect. The calculated values of mean absolute error are comparable to the those of trusted dosimeters reported in the literature. These mean absolute errors, and the ubiquity of desirable dosimetric qualities inherent to PSDs suggest that PSDs in general are accurate for relative dosimetry with the MRI-LINAC. Further investigation is required into the source of the reported systematic trends dependent on field-size and depth of measurement.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is an important technique for heart disease diagnosis. This paper proposes a novel method for ECG beat classification. Several important issues exist in the ECG beat classification, which, if suitably addressed, may lead to development of more robust and efficient recognizers. Some of these issues include feature extraction, choice of classification approach and optimization. A new method for non-linear feature extraction of ECG signals based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD), approximate entropy (ApEn) and wavelet packet entropy is presented. The proposed method first uses EMD to decompose ECG signals into a finite number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), calculates the ApEn of IMFs as one feature and then obtains the wavelet packet entropy of wavelet packet coefficients as another feature. The two features are regarded as a feature vector. The support vector machine (SVM) and probabilistic neural network (PNN) are used for beat classification. The particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to optimize parameters of the PNN and SVM. The performance of the SVM classifier is slightly superior to that of the PNN classifier with 98.6% accuracy.

In most traditional electrocardiogram (ECG) detection procedures, wet electrodes must be glued to the skin during the procedure and may cause problems such as inconvenience and skin irritation. Furthermore, the quality of the acquired signals decreases because the glue dehydrates over time. In this study, a non-contact ECG acquisition system based on capacitive coupling textile electrodes with low-power consumption and high input impedance is presented. We designed electrodes that have a composite and textile structure. A kind of conductive textile with stainless steel wire creates these electrodes. We wove the conductive textile that has good electrical conductivity with a surface resistivity of 1.25 Ω/sq. Both circuit models of the skin–electrode interface and amplifier for the capacitively coupled textile electrode were established, and the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the front-end circuit was proposed. The integrated system combines amplification, filter circuit and analogue-to-digital converter. The final measurement shows that the ECG signals acquired by our system are adequate for heartbeat detection and applicable to clinical practice.
