Well-managed grazing systems can provide valuable ecosystem services, such as reducing sediment and phosphorus (P) loading to nearby waterways. However, the available long-term data to fully support this hypothesis are limited. In this article, we describe flow-weighted concentrations (FWCs) and loads for dissolved reactive P (DRP), total P (TP), iron (Fe), and aluminum (Al) over 11 years (1999-2009) from a 7.8 ha rotationally grazed pasture (W1) near Watkinsville, Georgia. The region is characterized by Fe and Al rich and acidic Ultisols. Cattle numbering 21 to 224 (mean 91) grazed W1 on 69 occasions for 1 to 71 d (mean 19.2). Of 74 runoff events, 20 occurred when the monthly rainfall was below the long-term average (deficit period) and 54 occurred during non-deficit periods. Samples were collected from 43 of 74 runoff events for nutrient analyses. Event FWC (mg L-1) ranged from 0.38 to 7.07 for DRP (mean 1.91), from 0.36 to 7.60 for TP (mean 2.43), from 0.03 to 0.55 for Fe (mean 0.23), and from 0.43 to 553 μg L-1 for Al (mean 65 μg L-1). Event load (kg ha-1) ranged from 0.00 to 0.45 for DRP (mean 0.10), from 0.00 to 0.55 for TP (mean 0.12), from 0.00 to 0.11 for Fe (mean 0.02), and from 0.00 to 0.10 for Al (mean 0.01). The total load (kg ha-1) was 4.12 for DRP, 5.12 for TP, 0.71 for Fe, and 0.25 for Al. DRP accounted for 80% of the TP FWC and load. Cattle presence increased sediment load, but the difference was not statistically significant. There was high correlation between Fe and DRP loads (r = 0.87), a likely indicator of erosion-induced losses due to cattle treading. Cattle presence increased FWCs but not loads for DRP and TP. The FWCs for DRP and TP were not different between deficit and non-deficit periods, but mean loads were 3-fold to 4-fold greater during non-deficit periods. Means from the six largest P loss events were 3-fold greater for FWC and 7-fold greater for load than the remaining 37 events. These six large events accounted for 53% of the total P load. Less than 1% of the inorganic P applied and redeposited through manure was lost in runoff. The study demonstrated that hydrologic transport processes were the dominant drivers of pollutant fluxes and highlighted the possible mitigation of pollutant fluxes through grazing management that includes maintenance of good grass cover, effective rotational grazing, and limited fertilization. The curve number (CN) method for estimating direct runoff from a rainfall event is commonly used in hydrologic investigations, but currently accepted CNs for no-till cropping might need revising. We derived CNs from ranked rainfall-runoff data gathered from 1972 to 2010 from a 2.7 ha, zero-order watershed (P1) near Athens, Georgia. The watershed was initially managed under conventional tillage for 2.5 years, followed by double-cropped continuous no-till rotations. During conventional tillage, on average 19% of the rainfall was partitioned into runoff (median 13%). The mean and median CN was 82 and 85, respectively. Least square fitting of CN versus rainfall produced an asymptotic CN of 81 (R² = 0.61). In contrast, the mean and median runoff during no-till was 7% and 0.6% of the rainfall, respectively. The mean CN equaled the median CN of 62. The asymptotic CN was 58 (R² = 0.78), compared with 72 from standard tables. When estimated using CN of 72, the mean runoff during no-till was 142% greater than the measured mean runoff. These results support the hypothesis that CNs for no-till cropping systems should be smaller than currently accepted values for comparable watersheds in the region. Widespread implementation of conservation tillage systems during cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and peanut (Arachis hypogea L.) production in the Atlantic Coastal Plain region of the U.S. has substantially reduced erosion and sediment loss. However, the benefits of conservation tillage in these cropping systems are being threatened by weather shifts that include increased frequency of high-intensity rainfall, policies that encourage the removal of crop residues as cellulosic feedstocks for energy production, and increased herbicide resistance in weeds. Long-term integrated studies are needed to quantify potential impacts. We evaluated runoff and sediment loss from six 0.2 ha fields located on a gently sloping hillslope in a Southern Atlantic Coastal Plain landscape over ten years (2000-2009) during rotational cotton-peanut production, with a rye (Secale cereale) winter cover crop. Half of the fields were in conventional tillage (CT; inversion tillage with cover crop residue incorporation prior to planting), and half were in strip tillage (ST), which is a commonly used conservation tillage practice in the region. Fields were laid out as contrasting tillage pairs at upper, middle, and lower landscape positions and irrigated as needed. Runoff and sediment load from CT fields was significantly greater than from ST fields at each landscape position. Over the 10-year study period, mean annual total sediment load was 1823 kg ha-1 year-1 from CT fields and 237 kg ha-1 year-1 from ST fields (an 87% difference), and runoff was reduced by 41%. A soil tolerance value (T) of 2,200 kg ha-1 year-1 was exceeded in three out of ten years in CT fields and never exceeded in ST fields. On a monthly basis, extreme events (>90th percentile; 10%) accounted for 61% to 72% of the 10-year total sediment load for the CT system (341 to 2,828 kg ha-1 month-1) and 73% to 84% for the ST system (49 to 593 kg ha-1 month-1). The rainfall and irrigation total was above the normal monthly rainfall in 83% of these extreme monthly periods (mean 179 mm, range 81 to 316 mm). Sediment load was greatest in summer and spring, and during cotton production. The study results improve estimates of the increase in rainfall event size tolerated by CT vs. ST cropping systems, demonstrate the benefits of conservation tillage management during cotton and peanut production, and are expected to guide management decisions that focus on reducing sediment loss in this landscape. The environmental outcomes from tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum [Schreb.] Darbysh.) pastures managed with different levels of endophyte (Neotyphodium coenophialum) infection and choices of harvest and fertilization methods are not well known. We moni-tored runoff from 14 tall fescue paddocks, 0.9 to 1.1 ha (2.2 to 2.7 ac) each, from April of 2002 to April of 2010 near Watkinsville in the Georgia Piedmont. Three grazed Jesup tall fescue-endpohyte associations (endophyte infected high alkaloid--Wild, endophyte infected low alkaloid--MaxQ, and endophyte free--Free), and two sources of fertilization (inorganic and broiler litter), were replicated twice in a randomized block design. A replicated hayed treatment was planted to Jesup MaxQ with inorganic fertilization as a grazing control. Drought reduced the maximum number of runoff events to 77. A Standardized Precipitation Index analysis showed that the degree of drought was dependent on the time scale consid-ered. The near normal period peaked at a 1-month (74%) scale and was least at a 9-month time scale (32%). Considering a 1-month time scale, there were on average 4 times as many runoff events per month during the near normal, and 16 times as many during the wet and wetter period, as those in the dry and drier period. Fertilizer and fertilizer by fescue inter-actions in grazed paddocks had significant effect on runoff, whereas main effects of fescue type and harvest methods (graze versus hay) did not. Inorganically fertilized paddocks had 30% greater runoff -than those with broiler litter fertilization. The largest runoff amount occurred with inorganic fertilizer and endophyte-free fescue, suggesting a combined impact' of reduced persistence of the endophyte-free fescue, with low organic matter input from the inorganic fertilizer. Grazing of Piedmont pastures with MaxQ-endophyte association of tall fescue, and fertilized with broiler litter, does not appear to pose additional risk for runoff, compared to tall fescue pastures under the common wild-type-endophyte association that are hayed or grazed, and fertilized inorganically or with broiler litter. These results further support a previous recommendation for increased adoption of MaxQ with broiler litter fertilization in the southeastern United States, because of excellent average daily gain by cattle and stand persistence of MaxQ. High-quality surface-soil characteristics are important for developing environmentally sustainable agroecosystems. We evaluated the factorial combination of fertilization regime (inorganic and broiler litter) and tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbysh.]--endophyte association (free, novel, and wild) with cattle grazing (plus a control treatment of inorganic fertilizer + novel endophyte with haying) on surface soil compaction and soil organic C and total N sequestration during 8 yr of management on a previously degraded Typic Kanhapludult in Georgia. Soil organic C and total N were sequestered with time at all depth intervals to 20 cm (0-3, 3-6, 6-12, and 12-20 cm). At a depth of 0 to 6 cm (surface zone most responsive to management), soil organic C sequestration was (I) greater with grazed than with hayed management (1.36 vs. 0.69 Mg C ha-1 yr-1, respectively), (ii) similar between broiler litter and inorganic fertilization, (iii) similar among endophyte associations, and (iv) similar among zones within a grazed pasture. At a depth of 0 to 20 cm, soil organic C and total N sequestration were not significantly affected by treatment variables, but high mean sequestration rates of 1.51 Mg C ha-1 yr-1 and 0.126 Mg N ha-1 yr-1 during managed grazing of tall fescue in addition to the previous decade of unmanaged herbaceous fallow (implied sequestration rates of 0.76 Mg C ha-1 yr-1 and 0.062 Mg N ha-1 yr-1) suggests that improved grazing management systems can have an enormous benefit to surface soil fertility restoration of degraded soils in the southeastern United States. Aims: To better understand the transport and enumeration of dilute densities of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in agricultural watersheds, we developed a culture-based, five tube-multiple dilution most probable number (MPN) method. Methods and Results: The MPN method combined a filtration technique for large volumes of surface water with standard selective media, biochemical and immunological tests, and a TaqMan confirmation step. This method determined E. coli O157:H7 concentrations as low as 0·1 MPN per litre, with a 95% confidence level of 0·01–0·7 MPN per litre. Escherichia coli O157:H7 densities ranged from not detectable to 9 MPN per litre for pond inflow, from not detectable to 0·9 MPN per litre for pond outflow and from not detectable to 8·3 MPN per litre for within pond. The MPN methodology was extended to mass flux determinations. Fluxes of E. coli O157:H7 ranged from <27 to >104 MPN per hour. Conclusion: This culture-based method can detect small numbers of viable/culturable E. coli O157:H7 in surface waters of watersheds containing animal agriculture and wildlife. Aims: To better understand and manage the fate and transport of Salmonella in agricultural watersheds, we developed a culture-based, five tube–four dilution most probable number (MPN) method for enumerating dilute densities of Salmonella in environmental waters. Methods and Results: The MPN method was a combination of a filtration technique for large sample volumes of environmental water, standard selective media for Salmonella and a TaqMan confirmation step. This method has determined the density of Salmonella in 20-l samples of pond inflow and outflow streams as low as 0·1 MPN l−1 and a low 95% confidence level 0·015 MPN l−1. Salmonella densities ranged from not detectable to 0·55 MPN l−1 for pond inflow samples and from not detectable to 3·4 MPN l−1 for pond outflow samples. Salmonella densities of pond inflow samples were associated with densities of Escherichia coli and faecal enterococci that indicated stream contamination with faeces and with nondetectable pond outflow densities of the faecal indicator bacteria. The MPN methodology was extended to flux determinations by integrating with volumetric measurements of pond inflow (mean flux of 2·5 l s−1) and outflow (mean flux of 5·6 l s−1). Fluxes of Salmonella ranged from 100 to greater than 104 MPN h−1. Conclusions: This is a culture-based method that can detect small numbers of Salmonella in environmental waters of watersheds containing animal husbandry and wildlife. Soil water influences hydrological, biological, and biogeochemical processes that determine on- and off-site response of landscapes under different agricultural uses. There are relatively little detailed spatial and temporal soil water measurements to validate current representations of spatial and temporal soil water variability. Soil water was measured over 3 yr at 12 sites to a 1.2-m depth in a 7.8-ha pasture catchment in the Georgia Piedmont in southeastern USA. The Mahalanobis statistical difference was estimated between all pairs of measurement sites for soil water. Multidimensional scaling of the Mahalanobis differences showed that only a single statistical dimension was separating the observed soil water variations at measurement sites (r = 0.99). This statistical dimension was then found to be most closely correlated with the depth to the Bt and the depth of the Ap horizons for explaining the observed variation in soil water between sampling sites (r = 0.69 and r = 0.8, respectively). Those sites where the Bt, an argillic horizon, was close to the surface, even when higher up the landscape, were generally wetter than those in which the Bt was deeper, even in the lower part of the landscape. The depth to the Bt horizon may serve as an indicator of the portions of the watershed most likely to be primary sources of runoff in association with the depth of overlying coarse-textured soil. Volumetric soil water content was generally greatest in winter (22 to 30% average) and least in summer (8 to 12% except when influenced by intense summer storms). To fully understand the soil water dynamics of Piedmont or similar landscapes, it is important to know the spatial distribution of the depth to the Bt horizon. Improved understanding of the soil water dynamics could lead to improved land use decisions, erosion control, and management of water resources. The Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) was established to develop a scientific understanding and methodology for estimating environmental benefits and effects of conservation practices on agricultural landscapes at watershed, regional, and national scales. CEAP's goal is to improve the effectiveness of conservation practices and programs by quantifying conservation effects and providing the science and education needed to enrich conservation planning, implementation, management decisions, and policy. Field observations and computer-based simulation of the effects of agricultural conservation are important components of CEAP. This research supports the CEAP effort by utilizing well-documented field data in conjunction with the Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender (APEX) model to quantify long-term conservation effects. In this study, field data collected at a research site located near Tifton, Georgia, were used to evaluate APEX and to quantify long-term benefits of implementing conservation tillage in the Atlantic Coastal Plain region of the United States. The objectives of this research were to (1) quantify differences in crop yield, hydrology, and sediment transport for conventional and conservation tillage systems in the Atlantic Coastal Plain; (2) develop a calibrated APEX simulation for these tillage systems; and (3) quantify the performance of the APEX model with respect to crop yields, hydrology, and sediment yield. Fourteen years of crop yield, surface runoff, subsurface flow, and sediment transport data were quantified comparing conventional tillage (CT) to strip tillage (ST). No treatment differences were found for either cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) or peanut (Arachis hypogea L.) yields. Surface runoff from the CT was found to be 1.7 times that of the ST, while subsurface flow from the ST was found to be 1.7 times that of CT. Total water loss (surface and subsurface) was nearly equivalent for the two systems: 30% of annual rainfall. Satisfactory model performance was found for APEX surface runoff simulations. Mixed results were found for model performance of crop yield while model simulations of subsurface flow and sediment yield were less than satisfactory. The APEX modeling framework provides a useful tool for assessing crop yield and hydrologic differences between tillage management systems in the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Additional refinement of modeling approaches may be necessary to adequately represent subsurface flow and sediment transport in these same systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The elemental composition of soil plays an essential role in crop nutrition, but losses from croplands can negatively impact soil fertility and water quality. We compared the impact of strip tillage (ST) and conventional tillage (CT) on element concentrations and loads in surface runoff and subsurface flow from plots under rotational cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) production with winter cover cropping. Total element concentrations (calcium [Ca], iron [Fe], potassium [K], magnesium [Mg], manganese [Mn], sodium [Na], phosphorus [P], sulfur [S], silicon [Si], and zinc [Zn]) in surface runoff and subsurface flow samples were measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma with Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Element loads were estimated by multiplying the element concentrations by the surface runoff and drainage volumes. Significantly greater (p = 0.05) surface runoff loads for all elements (with the exception of K and Zn) were observed from the CT compared with the ST treatment plots only in 2006, likely due to the combined effects of hydrology and the timing of gypsum amendments that year. Surface runoff was the primary hydrologic pathway for Fe, K, Mn, P, Si, and Zn loss while subsurface flow was the primary hydrologic pathway for Ca, Mg, and S loss with both tillage treatments. Lower concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, and S in the subsurface flow with ST compared to CT suggest that this tillage practice, in conjunction with the proper timing of fertilizer and soil amendment applications (e.g., poultry litter and gypsum) can be an effective method for reducing element losses from croplands. Conservation tillage (CsT) involves management that reduces soil erosion by maintaining crop residue cover on farm fields. Typically, both infiltration and soil organic matter increase over time with CsT practices. We compared the impact of a commonly used CsT practice, strip tillage (ST), to conventional tillage (CT) management on soil nitrogen (N) dynamics and leaching and examined associations to soil N availability and microbial biomass. A winter cover crop was used in both tillage treatments. The study was conducted over a five-year period during rotational cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) production in the Atlantic Coastal Plain region in Georgia, United States. Fertilizer and poultry litter were applied ahead of the cotton crops. Sets of PVC cylinders were filled with soil from each of six plots, three in ST and three in CT, and maintained in situ in their respective plots for 16 intervals of about 90 days. After retrieval, the soil in each cylinder was analyzed for inorganic N (ammonium and nitrates [NH4+ and NO3−]), total N, total carbon (C), and microbial biomass. Leached NO3−-N was captured on anion exchange resin-filled bags attached to the bottom of each cylinder. After the five-year study period, the ST and CT soil C content increased by 22% and 23%, respectively. Total soil N content increased 27% with ST compared to 22% with CT. Temporal patterns in NO3−-N leaching were not different between CT and ST treatments, and a high amount of NO3−-N leaching was observed after the application of poultry litter. The cumulative amount of NO3−-N leached from soils throughout the five-year study was 141 and 122 kg N ha−1 (126 and 109 lb N ac−1) with CT and ST practices, respectively. Results suggest that leaching from the top 15 cm (6 in) of soil may be an important pathway of N loss from both CT and ST cropping systems in the region. Regardless of tillage, soil microbial biomass N was equal to or higher than the total inorganic N, but still represented a small percentage (up to 9%) of the total soil N. Overall, microbial biomass N was higher in ST compared to CT. Minimizing NO3−-N in the soil from reaching ground and surface waters while increasing crop productivity represents a major challenge. The use of ST in conjunction with winter cover crops may improve plant N availability by more than 27 kg ha−1 y−1 (24 lb ac−1 yr−1) in the sandy landscapes of the southeastern Coastal Plain region through microbial cycling of organic N while reducing subsurface NO3−-N losses. Reduced tillage and surface residue increases infiltration, soil water content, and plant available water, while at the same time decreasing runoff and sedimentation. However, there is a general lack of knowledge and appreciation regarding the impact conservation tillage has on sustainable water resources. The objective of this study was to estimate water savings as a result of conservation tillage adoption in Georgia. Total acreages by crop (cotton, corn, and peanut) and tillage (conventional and conservation) were obtained via the Conservation Technology Information Center for the 2004 growing season. Rainfall simulation studies conducted over row-cropped lands in conventional and conservation tillage were obtained for soils in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont physiographies. Data were integrated within a geographical information system. In 2004, cotton, corn, and peanuts represented 85% of row crop production in Georgia, with nearly 90% of the acreage in the Coastal Plain. Conservation tillage systems are currently in place on approximately 30% of those acreages, primarily in the form of strip tillage. Results from rainfall simulation studies indicate that conservation tillage can reduce runoff and increase infiltration in these systems by 29% to 46%. Extrapolating these results to the state, conservation tillage reduced estimated statewide, irrigated water requirements from 4% to 14%. Increasing conservation tillage to 40% in intensively row-cropped counties where conservation tillage adoption rates were less than the national average (40%) increased estimated water savings by an additional 1% to 6%.
