23. Enhancement of water-window soft x-ray emission from laser-produced Au plasma under low-pressure nitrogen atmosphere

Abstract

To generate bright water-window (WW) soft x rays (2.3–4.4 nm), gold slab targets were irradiated with laser pulses (1064 nm, 7 ns, 1 J). Emission spectroscopy showed that the introduction of low-pressure nitrogen enhanced the soft x-ray yield emitted from the laser-produced Au plasma. The intensity of the WW x-ray transported in a 400-Pa N2 atmosphere from the laser-produced plasma increased by 3.8 times over that in vacuum. Considering a strong x-ray absorption, the x-ray yield emitted directly from the Au plasma in the N2 gas was evaluated to be 13 times higher than that in vacuum. Although similar measurements were made for various gases, only N2 gas causes an increase in a soft x-ray yield. The processes leading to this enhancement mechanism were revealed by using hydrodynamic simulation and atomic structure codes.

Abstract

X-ray emitted by a laser generated plasma has various applications. Serious issue to be solved is thatthe energy conversion e?ciency from the laser to X-ray is quite low. Recently, it was found that the X-ray emitted by the laser produced Auplasma increases under nitrogen atmospheres. In particular, the intensity of the water window soft X-ray (2.4-4.4 nm) increases approximately ten times. In order to elucidate this enhancement mechanism of X-ray, we have measured soft X-ray spectra from Au plasma in the wavelength of 1-7 nm so far. Recently, we fabricated a TAP crystal spectrometer to observe the photons over 1 keV region (1.0-1.9 eV), which provides useful information of plasma temperature. As a detector, an imaging plate(IP) was used. Titanium ?lters was also used to block out-of-band emission. As a result, continuum spectra attributed unresolved transition arrays (UTAs) was observed from the Au laser plasma. This spectral profile was compared with the Star2D hydrodynamic code., DPP19 Meeting of The American Physical Society

31. Pressure history at the thrust wall of a simplified pulse detonation engine

Abstract

Gas dynamics in a simplified pulse detonation engine (PDE) was theoretically analyzed. A PDE was simplified as a straight tube with a fixed cross section. One end of the tube was closed, namely, this end was the thrust wall, and the other end was open. A detonation wave was initiated at the closed end and simultaneously started to propagate toward the open end. When the detonation wave broke out from the open end, a rarefaction wave started to propagate from the open end toward the closed end. This rarefaction wave was reflected by the closed end. By considering this rarefaction wave to be self-similar in the analysis of the interference between this rarefaction wave and its reflection from the closed end, we analytically formulated the decay portion of the pressure history at the closed end (thrust wall) without any empirical parameters. By integrating the obtained pressure history at the thrust wall with respect to time, important performance parameters of a PDE were also formulated. The obtained formulas were compared with numerical and experimental results and agreed with them very well.

Abstract

The purge layer of a semi-valveless pulse detonation cycle (PDC) needs to be minimized for operating at a gas-dynamic upper frequency limit. Therefore, it is essential to better understand the process of burned gas backflow for minimizing the purge layer thickness. The flow field of the semi-valveless PDC was visualized to illustrate the movement of burned gas. A combustor of length of 95 mm with a 10-mm-square cross section was used. Supercritical ethylene and oxygen gas were used as fuel and oxidizer, respectively, and the operation frequency was 604 Hz. The unsteady refilling process of the detonable mixture was modeled by an isentropic flow. In addition, the detailed burned gas blowdown process with deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) and the backflow were captured. It was shown that the retonation wave generated by the DDT process was the primary trigger of the burned gas backflow. When the duration required for the DDT process was sufficiently shorter than that of the burned gas blowdown process, it was found the latter could be reproduced with approximately 90% accuracy by one-dimensional numerical analysis without the DDT process.
