Abstract

Background On festive days worldwide eyes are severely injured by fireworks. The data on the number and severity are to date not registered in Germany. Objective How frequent are firework-induced injuries in Germany, who are the affected, how serious are the injuries, which forms of treatment are necessary and how frequent are accompanying injuries? Method A German nationwide online-based survey was carried out in all inpatient eye departments and data over the last 3 consecutive years were descriptively analyzed. Results From New Years Eve 2016/2017, when 41 eye departments sent in data, the participation could be increased to 51 eye departments in 2018/2019. More than one third (33-39%) of all 1356 patients over 3 years were minors, 60% were younger than 25 years old and roughly 60% of patients were injured as bystanders or in an unclear situation. In total 25% of all eye injuries were considered severe and required inpatient treatment. Accompanying injuries of the other eye, the face and hands were more frequent in minors than in adults. Eyeball ruptures were reported in 10 minors and 38 adults over the 3 years. Conclusion Particularly minors and bystanders need better protection.

Abstract

With essays covering diverse topics, from seafood trade across the Vietnam-China border, to street traders in Hanoi, to gold shops in Ho Chi Minh City, Traders in Motion spans the fields of economic and political anthropology, geography, and sociology to illuminate how Vietnam's rapidly expanding market economy is formed and transformed by everyday interactions among traders, suppliers, customers, family members, neighbors, and officials. The contributions shed light on the micropolitics of local-level economic agency in the paradoxical context of Vietnam's socialist orientation and its contemporary neoliberal economic and social transformation. The essays examine how Vietnamese traders and officials engage in on-the-ground contestations to define space, promote or limit mobility, and establish borders, both physical and conceptual. The contributors show how trading experiences shape individuals' notions of self and personhood, not just as economic actors, but also in terms of gender, region, and ethnicity. Traders in Motion affords rich comparative insight into how markets form and transform and what those changes mean.

Abstract

Cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins influence the proteolytic processing of the amyloid-beta protein precursor (AbetaPP) and are reported to stimulate the activity of alpha-secretase, the major preventive secretase of Alzheimer's disease. Statins can increase the alpha-secretase activity by their cholesterol-lowering properties as well as by impairment of isoprenoids synthesis. In the present study, we elucidate the contribution of these pathways in alpha-secretase activation. We demonstrate that zaragozic acid, a potent inhibitor of squalene synthase which blocks cholesterol synthesis but allows synthesis of isoprenoids, also stimulates alpha-secretase activity. Treatment of human neuroblastoma cells with 50 microM zaragozic acid resulted in a approximately 3 fold increase of alpha-secretase activity and reduced cellular cholesterol by approximately 30%. These effects were comparable to results obtained from cells treated with a low lovastatin concentration (2 microM). Zaragozic acid-stimulated secretion of alpha-secretase-cleaved soluble AbetaPP was dose dependent and saturable. Lovastatin- or zaragozic acid-stimulated increase of alpha-secretase activity was completely abolished by a selective ADAM10 inhibitor. By targeting the alpha-secretase ADAM10 to lipid raft domains via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor, we demonstrate that ADAM10 is unable to cleave AbetaPP in a cholesterol-rich environment. Our results indicate that inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis by a low lovastatin concentration is sufficient for alpha-secretase activation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Mit einer vereinfachten Methodik der rontgenhistoradiographischen Trockengewichtsbestimmung ohne Referenzsystem wurden vergleichende Untersuchungen mit dem Bakerschen Interferenzmikroskop an Zellausstrichen von Bullenspermien und -thymuslymphocyten, Froscherythrocyten und Plattenepithelien der menschlichen Mundschleimhaut durchgefuhrt. Die gewonnenen Ergebnisse stimmen gut uberein. Die Abweichungen betragen etwa 10%. Sie geben einen Einblick in die Fehlerbreite beider Methoden und bestatigen insbesondere die Genauigkeit der von uns angewandten quantitativen rontgenhistoradiographi schen Methodik.

42. Enhancement of fracture strength of cutted plate glass by the application of SiO2sol-gel coatings

Abstract

The influence of SiO2sol-gel coatings on the bending strength of soda lime plate glass samples has been investigated by 3 point bending and double ring bending strength measurements. The samples were prepared by manual glass cutting and were coated with two different types of SiO2coating: A TEOS coating (thickness of about 100 nm) was obtained from sols synthesized by acid catalysis of tetraethoxysilane and a MTKS coating (thickness of about 1 μm) was obtained from a methyl modified nanoparticulate SiO2sol. The coatings were applied by dipping and were densified at 500°C for 1 h. The fracture strength σ0of edge coated plate glass (60×25×3.8 mm), determined by 3 point bending test (according to EN 843-1), was increased after coating with TEOS from σ0=24 MPa to 40 MPa (67% increase). The fracture strength increased to σ0=56 MPa (133% increase) on applying MTKS or a double coating of TEOS followed by MTKS. The evaluation of these measurements using Weibull statistical analysis resulted in mvalues of 4.1 and 4.2 for the TEOS and MTKS coating and 3.5 for double coating (uncoated glasses m=5.7), respectively. These results combined with high resolution secondary electron microscopy investigations led to the conclusion that the strengthening effect of the two different sol-gel systems is due to a partial flaw healing and clamping of the crack sides.

43. The effect of gender on course evaluations in mass communications: a pilot study

Abstract

This pilot study utilized a male and a female instructor from a midwestern US university, using a production course and traditional lecture course from each. The instructor was not present during the administration. The study found a correlation between gender of instructor and gender of student in the mass communication courses studied. Although none of the study's hypotheses was supported, significant findings and the high correlation found suggest a relationship between instructors and students of the same gender.

45. A new adhesive technique for internal fixation in midfacial surgery.

Abstract

Background: The current surgical therapy of midfacial fractures involves internal fixation in which bone fragments are fixed in their anatomical positions with osteosynthesis plates and corresponding screws until bone healing is complete. This often causes new fractures to fragile bones while drilling pilot holes or trying to insert screws. The adhesive fixation of osteosynthesis plates using PMMA bone cement could offer a viable alternative for fixing the plates without screws. In order to achieve the adhesive bonding of bone cement to cortical bone in the viscerocranium, an amphiphilic bone bonding agent was created, analogous to the dentin bonding agents currently on the market.Methods: The adhesive bonding strengths were measured using tension tests. For this, metal plates with 2.0 mm diameter screw holes were cemented with PMMA bone cement to cortical bovine bone samples from the femur diaphysis. The bone was conditioned with an amphiphilic bone bonding agent prior to cementing. The samples were stored for 1 to 42 days at 37 degrees C, either moist or completely submerged in an isotonic NaCl-solution, and then subjected to the tension tests.Results: Without the bone bonding agent, the bonding strength was close to zero (0.2 MPa). Primary stability with bone bonding agent is considered to be at ca. 8 MPa. Moist storage over 42 days resulted in decreased adhesion forces of ca. 6 MPa. Wet storage resulted in relatively constant bonding strengths of ca. 8 MPa.Conclusion: A new amphiphilic bone bonding agent was developed, which builds an optimizied interlayer between the hydrophilic bone surface and the hydrophobic PMMA bone cement and thus leads to adhesive bonding between them. Our in vitro investigations demonstrated the adhesive bonding of PMMA bone cement to cortical bone, which was also stable against hydrolysis. The newly developed adhesive fixing technique could be applied clinically when the fixation of osteosynthesis plates with screws is impossible. With the detected adhesion forces of ca. 6 to 8 MPa, it is assumed that the adhesive fixation system is able to secure bone fragments from the non-load bearing midfacial regions in their orthotopic positions until fracture consolidation is complete. Abstract

A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10) is a crucial transmembrane protein involved in diverse cellular processes, including cell adhesion, migration, and proteolysis. ADAM10's ability to cleave over 100 substrates underscores its significance in physiological and pathological contexts, particularly in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This review comprehensively examines ADAM10's multifaceted roles, highlighting its critical function in the non-amyloidogenic processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), which mitigates amyloid beta (Aβ) production, a critical factor in AD development. We summarize the regulation of ADAM10 at multiple levels: transcriptional, translational, and post-translational, revealing the complexity and responsiveness of its expression to various cellular signals. A standardized nomenclature for ADAM10 isoforms is proposed to improve clarity and consistency in research, facilitating better comparison and replication of findings across studies. We address the challenges in detecting ADAM10 isoforms using antibodies, advocating for standardized detection protocols to resolve discrepancies in results from different biological matrices. By highlighting these issues, this review underscores the potential of ADAM10 as a biomarker for early diagnosis and a therapeutic target in AD.
