Native American authors in the first half of the nineteenth century—the dawn of the Anthropocene in some accounts—were witness to the rapid expansion of settler-colonialism powered by new ideologies of energy and fueled by fossil capitalism. These authors, though, resisted extractive metaphors for energy and fuel, offering more organic and intimate visions of energy instead. Using energy humanities theories developed by Warren Cariou (Métis) and Bob Johnson, among others, this article will analyze Mary Jemison’s (Seneca) autobiography; Jane Johnston Schoolcraft’s (Ojibwe) poem, “On the Doric Rock, Lake Superior”; and John Rollin Ridge’s (Cherokee) novel, The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta. These works show how Native American authors defined energy as cyclical and intimate in contrast to the growing settler society’s vision of linear, unending extraction. This article argues that nineteenth-century Native American Anglophone literatures expand the scope of the energy humanities by describing energy intimacy while also extending the histories of Indigenous resistance to settler energy imaginaries. Nineteenth-century Native American literatures can make important contributions to the scope of the energy humanities and need to be integrated into the field to grasp the full scale of current environmental crises.

In this paper I offer an overview of the possible links between psychoanalytical metapsychology and contemporary work in neuroscience concerning entropy and the free energy principle. After briefly describing the theory of living systems put forward by the neuroscientist Karl Friston based on the notion of entropy, we sum up the use of the notion of free energy by Friston and Freud. I then analyze how these notions improve the intelligibility of psychic functioning and can be associated with several psychoanalytical concepts, in particular the death drive. I approach from the same perspective the regulation of free energy associated with psychic envelopes and early intersubjectivity. It thus appears that the psychic apparatus can be considered at its different levels, from the most primary to the most secondary, as having the essential function of reducing entropy and free energy. Various forms of "failure" of this process of linking, regulation and transformation of energy within the psychic apparatus could be considered as the origin of different psychopathological manifestations as suggested in the last part of this paper.

The development of new materials is the research emphasis in the field of material chemistry all the time. For instance, developing new light-capture materials and catalysts to improve the efficiency of existing photovoltaic cells is one of the most effective approaches to increasing solar power capacity radically. The design of high-performance catalytic materials to make better use of energy from fossil fuels and biomass. In addition, it is an important research direction of material chemistry and energy chemistry to deeply understand the reaction mechanism of energy conversion.

When learning science, students must often make sense of complex and counterintuitive ideas. However, this process of sensemaking is difficult, and consequently students risk emerging from science courses with highly fragmented understandings. In this study, I examine the ways in which students create conceptual connections to resolve such difficulties and defragment their understandings. Using three intersecting theoretical frameworks—Knowledge in Pieces, sensemaking, and conceptual blends—I analyze a case study of two undergraduate physics students making sense of the concepts of voltage, electric potential, and electric potential energy. I show how the students move through the different stages of the sensemaking process and how a conceptual blend was constructed and productively applied to help them resolve their knowledge fragmentation. Based on this case, I argue that conceptual blends can serve as a cognitive mechanism for the sensemaking process.

The continuous increase in human energy production per caput is accompanied by an increase in the world population. The work considers the demographic history of civilization as a function of the growing production and use of the energy by mankind. The evolution in the «energy-man» system took place relatively safely for the biosphere and a man up to the value of the per caput energy consumption of 11,000 kW*h/year*person that was achieved by civilization in 1950. Modern high per caput energy consumption of civilization is achieved at the cost of the loss of the environment-forming functioning by the biosphere and at the cost of the loss of the psychophysical health of a person. We can see the prospects for development of civilization through analysis of the energy-demographic history of mankind over the past 200 years. The features of fertility and mortality in the world are considered depending on the per caput energy consumption with a forecast for the future. Two limits to the growth of global energy production were formulated in terms of preventing harm to humans. Corresponding analytical dependencies are proposed. To prevent an ecological and demographic catastrophe and ensure transition of civilization to sustainable development, it is proposed to reduce the world energy production to 140*1012 kW*h/year with a decrease in per caput energy consumption to a relatively safe level of 18,000 kW*h/year*person, which existed in society in 1970. After this «step back» civilization will enter a state of relatively safe existence.

The article deals with bilateral Russia and Ukraine power relations, urgent questions of their cooperation and form of realization of large Russia foreign economic projects. The separation of bilateral Ukrainian-Russian relations in the energy sector is quite conditional, the authors have studied. Because they are objectively inscribed in the relations of both countries with a third party – first of all, European countries as consumers of energy resources transported through the territory of Ukraine. Thus, both from the point of view of the technological chain (producer-transit-consumer) and from the economic point of view (seller-provider of transportation services-buyer), these relations should be considered in a tripartite format. It tries to determine possible threats of Ukraine’s national security in the context of Russia foreign power strategy realization. Ukrainian-Russian relations in the energy sector are quite dynamic, but cannot be assessed unambiguously due to the presence of a combination of positive and negative factors and trends. They largely depend on the general state of relations between the two capitals, and sometimes have a decisive influence on them. It has been investigated that the weaknesses of the Ukrainian energy sector since independence in 1991 shed light on the fundamental link between energy security and national security. From the point of view of global energy processes, one should take into account the favorable geopolitical and geographical position of Ukraine and its related role as a transit state. The integration of the Ukrainian energy system into the European one is a component of Ukraine’s strategic goal of joining the EU. Ukraine has a sufficiently strong and developed gas, oil and electricity networks, connected to the transport networks of the EU and CIS countries: Russia, Moldova, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, which allows it to participate in the formation of European energy policy and common energy market, play an important role in energy cooperation between the CIS and the EU.

Landscape, and its relation to place identity, is a powerful tool for visualizing and making legible the effects of environmental change. So often the operations of resource consumption and conservation occur in a way that shapes and changes particular regional landscapes. This is significant in an era where inspiring audiences and policy-makers to respond to unsustainable resource use and environmental change is difficult, but where we are still compelled to care for particular elements of place as they relate to identity. In this article we examine how resource use and landscape change are communicated through Irish films, where the interactions of place identity and landscape are central. A key through line argument is how landscape is an important vehicle for expressing anxieties and contexts for resource interdependency; another is how elements of local and regional identity compete and interact with global concerns, such as climate change or globalization, in complex ways. We analyse these interactions to demonstrate how energy resource use and environmental change are linked, highlighting ‘small nation’ tensions concerning geographic identity and resource ownership that are relevant to real-world energy transitions and apply much more broadly.

This essay reads Joseph Addison’ views on imagination and on a set of interrelated tropes—wit, metaphor, personification—from the perspective afforded by the interaction view of metaphor. By adopting this analytical standpoint, the essay documents how Addison relies, often unwittingly, on a propositional model of signification in order to put forward his strongest claims on literary language, imagination, and aesthetic judgment. Such a model constitutes a significant departure from Addison's starting point, the referential model of signification that premises and circumscribes John Locke's account of rhetorical language. This reading offers not only a synthesizing account of Addison's views across a range of texts, but it also enables a new and more nuanced placement of Addison in eighteenth-century aesthetics.

The author explores the jurisdictional ability of an administrative tribunal — specifically, the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) — to decide constitutional matters. She focuses particularly on tribunal decisions relating to Charter rights and Aboriginal or treaty rights (s. 35(1)) and examines the recent decisions of Martin and Paul from the Supreme Court of Canada. The author concludes that for questions of law, the EUB has not only the option but the duty to consider constitutional questions.

В статье предлагается ответ на критику Е. В. Зайцевым учения В. Н. Лосского о различении сущности и энергий в Боге. Е. В. Зайцев полагает, что учение В. Н. Лосского обладает грубым внутренним противоречием, которое привело к разрыву между теологией и икономией. На взгляд автора, данные выводы не обоснованы, в связи с чем в статье предпринята попытка богословского анализа наиболее важных аспектов учения В. Н. Лосского о различении сущности и энергий в Боге с целью определить характер этого различения (с точки зрения указанных аспектов). В ходе исследования были особо подчеркнуты следующие идеи: творение есть акт воли, а не акт природы; нетварные энергии есть бытие всего существующего, а между нетварной сущностью и сущностью тварной пролегает бесконечное онтологическое расстояние; абсолютное совершенство есть абсолютная простота, абсолютное совершенство предполагает бесконечное разнообразие бесконечных и всемогущих энергий, основанных на единой нетварной сущности; между действующим и действием не может быть никакого сложения; в силу бесконечности нетварных сущности и энергий они сведены к абсолютной неделимости и простоте; абсолютная неповторимость личности есть абсолютная простота; нетварная Личность Христа одновременно пребывает в нетварной природе и природе тварной неделимо; в состоянии обожения человек бесконечно усваивает свойство божественной простоты; обожение осуществляется бесконечно от силы в бóльшую силу и др. В результате исследования автор пришёл к выводу, что с точки зрения рассмотренных аспектов богословия В. Н. Лосского его различение сущности и энергий в Боге является не грубым противоречием, а онтологической антиномией, указывающей на неисчерпаемую тайну бытия Бога, Его творческого акта, бытия творения и обожения человека. The article proposes an answer to criticism by E.V. Zaitsev of the teachings of V.N. Lossky about the distinction between essence and energy in God. E. V. Zaitsev believes that this doctrine has a gross internal contradiction, which led to the gap between «theology» and «economy». In the author’s opinion, these conclusions are not substantiated. In this connection, an attempt is made in the article to theologically analyze the most important aspects of V.N. During the study, the following ideas were especially emphasized: creation is an act of will, not an act of nature; uncreated energies are the being of all that exists, and between the uncreated essence and the creaturely essence lies an infinite ontological distance; absolute perfection is absolute simplicity; absolute perfection implies an infinite variety of infinite and omnipotent energies based on a single uncreated entity; there can be no addition between the acting and the action; due to the infinity of uncreated essences and energies they are reduced to absolute indivisibility and simplicity; the absolute uniqueness of personality is absolute simplicity; the uncreated Person of Christ is simultaneously in the uncreated nature and the created nature; in a state of deification, a person endlessly assimilates the property of divine simplicity; deification is carried out endlessly from strength to great strength, etc. As a result of the study, the author came to the conclusion that from the point of view of the considered aspects of VN Lossky’s theology, his distinction between essence and energy in God is not a gross contradiction, but an ontological antinomy, indicating an inexhaustible the secret of the being of God, His creative act, the being of creation and deification of man.

The regulation of the energy sector in the EU adresses different challenges in pursuance of ensuring the functioning of the energy system. One of the most pressing current energy issues in the EU is household access to energy services, which is acknowledged as social justice concern. Provided that access to universal service in the EU is recognised as a right of households, the article aims to introduce the advanced concept of energy justice desiged for the investigation of households’ ability to access sufficient energy service in the EU. The article is organized in three parts. The first part specifies the roots of energy justice. The second part assesses whether the constituent elements of energy justice comply with EU fuonding values. Lastly, the more comprehensive concept of energy justice is presented with underlying rationale.

The purpose of this article is to present the multidimensional issue of an ‘energy transition’ from a philosophical, that is, conceptual and analytical, point of view. The argument of this article is that ‘energy transition’ is not simply a technological and economic problem but also an epistemological, cultural, anthropological and even metaphysical one. Energy transition does not only consist of changing the kind of energy that is produced and consumed to power our modern middle-income societies, from fossil fuels to renewable energies. Energy transition asks us to understand what is implied in cultural and social terms by such a shift from ‘grey’ to ‘green’ sources of energy that does not only entail qualitative transformation but also could imply quantitative curtailment. What will be the consequences of our necessary departure from ‘petromodernity’, that is, from the mode of living that came with fossil fuels in modern times that shape our current age of the Anthropocene? To address this question, different dimensions of the philosophy of energy will be studied: epistemological, phenomenological, anthropological, critical and metaphysical. In conclusion, we will, first, propose the notion of a ‘negative energy tax’ to address the problems of ‘energy injustice’. We will then refer to Bataille to provide an ontology of energy that can help to redefine our assumptions and expectations regarding energy spending.

Energy landscapes provide a conceptual framework for structure prediction, and a detailed understanding of their topological features is necessary to develop efficient methods for their exploration. The ability to visualize these surfaces is essential, but the high dimensionality of the corresponding configuration spaces makes this visualization difficult. Here, we present stochastic hyperspace embedding and projection (SHEAP), a method for energy landscape visualization inspired by state-of-the-art algorithms for dimensionality reduction through manifold learning, such as t-SNE and UMAP. The performance of SHEAP is demonstrated through its application to the energy landscapes of Lennard-Jones clusters, solid-state carbon, and the quaternary system C+H+N+O. It produces meaningful and interpretable low-dimensional representations of these landscapes, reproducing well-known topological features such as funnels and providing fresh insight into their layouts. In particular, an intrinsic low dimensionality in the distribution of local minima across configuration space is revealed.
