Abstract

The US military is a leader and innovator in sustainability. Around 2000, the US Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) launched the International Social Survey Program (ISSP). This effort engaged the facilities and surrounding stakeholder communities to identify a range of goal and objectives to promote sustainability within the Army. The ISSP's initial efforts were confirmed and reinforced when US Army leaders presented a vision for sustainability in 2004 with the Army Environmental Strategy, which introduced the concept of "triple bottom line: mission, environment and community”.

Abstract

The surrounding rock in tunnelling engineering and coal mining will sometimes be exposed to high temperature. Rock failure is the result of energy dissipation, and the study of the evolution and transformation behavior of energy is of great significance for the in-depth understanding of the deformation and failure of rock after high temperature. This study analyzed the intrinsic connection between mechanical properties and acoustic emission (AE) energy under temperature effect. Based on the energy dissipation and release theory, the distribution and transformation of energy was analyzed, and the energy self-incentive and self-inhibition (EII) model was further established. The main findings are that temperature effect affects the confidence interval trend and the value of AE energy rate, which is related to the change in mechanical properties. The ability of sandstone to store elastic strain energy after exposure to high temperature is independent of the mechanical properties. In this study, the ratio of dissipated energy to elastic energy is used to characterize the stable state of the sandstone system, which can be used as the energy indicator of rock failure precursor. During the absorption, storage, and release of energy before the peak stress, there exists self-incentive and self-inhibition of energy (control behavior).

4. Selection of the Energy Performance Indicator for Hotels Based on ISO 50001: A Case Study.

Abstract

The work deals with the study of the Energy Planning stage according to the ISO 50001:2018 Standard at the Hotel Punta la Cueva in Cienfuegos, Cuba. The current energy management indicators for hotels are well-studied. However, the study aims to incorporate the variable Degree-Days in the Room Days Occupied (RDO) to establish a correct Baseline and Energy Performance Indicator. The methodology followed is based on the energy management standards of energy review stage. The fundamental results were in obtaining the Energy Baseline with a Coefficient of Determination ( R 2 ) of 0.97. One of the opportunities for improvement consisted of the replacement of 80 bulbs 15 W with 9 W LED bulbs. It has an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 28%, a Present Value Net Income (NPV) of 71.5 USD, and an Investment Recovery Period (PRI) of 3.6 years. The second opportunity is a preliminary project for a Photovoltaic Solar System on the roofs of the buildings, where it is possible to install 1011 photovoltaic and achieve a generation of 384 kilowatt-peak (kWp). Abstract

The carbon trading market has introduced new opportunities for the low-carbon transformation of China's power industry. To realize real-time coupling of the electric–carbon market at the mechanism level, this study constructs a P2P trading mode that improves economic and environmental benefits through innovative mechanisms. First, we propose a novel indicator, Green Energy, which has multidimensional composite attributes and accurately characterizes the supply of clean and low-carbon energy. Green Energy is used as a matchmaking indicator in the P2P electricity market to increase the rate of renewable energy consumption and encourage emission reduction of fossil energy suppliers. Second, the carbon price is dynamically adjusted according to real-time electricity consumption information and it is transmitted to the electricity market through Green Energy. Third, blockchain cross-chain interoperability technology is introduced to establish a real-time data-sharing network for electricity and carbon co-trading. Moreover, a case study is conducted, and the simulation results show that the proposed method improves social welfare by over 18% compared to the traditional trading mode. And it can improve renewable energy utilization efficiency by 26.78% and reduce carbon emissions by more than 17%. 9. Disturbance modelling through steady-state value deviations: The determination of suitable energy indicators and parameters for energy consumption monitoring in a typical sugar mill.

Abstract

The growing emphasis in alternative revenue streams, from the conversion of sugarcane bagasse into energy co-products has prompted a desire by the sugar factories to achieve higher levels of energy efficiency. This study presents a comprehensive overview of the parameters whose steady-state deviation leads to excess energy use in sugar mills. The effect of eight operating parameters on the defined energy indicators was investigated, using a MATLAB simulation of a 250-tonne per hour sugar mill. The captured energy trends were used to develop energy prediction models based on the parameters whose steady-state offsets resulted in excess energy use. High prediction accuracies of over 95% were obtained when the developed energy prediction models were validated for seasonal cane quality and evaporator heat transfer coefficient variations. Increased A-massecuite recycling had a more pronounced effect on the energy used per kilogramme of water in the evaporator unit as compared to the crystallisation unit. Of the eight parameters, elevated imbibition water use and A-massecuite recycling had a cumulative percentage effect of 79% on the overall steam used per tonne of cane and sugar produced. Hence increasing the syrup concentration, decreasing imbibition water use and massecuite recycling are preferred operational strategies for improved energy-efficiency in a sugar mill. Overall, this study strengthens the existing literature by illustrating an approach for developing suitable energy indicators for excess energy use monitoring in sugarcane mills. • Analysis of the sugar mill energy aspects during process transients. • Explores the correlation between energy consumption and the key energy drivers. • Three energy indicators for energy monitoring and benchmarking were developed. • Rise in pan steam demand was mainly driven by the increase in massecuite recycling. • Imbibition water had the highest influence on the overall factory steam consumption. Abstract

Energy consumption of a furniture factory is assessed through detail energy audit which was performed within a framework of the UNIDO National Cleaner Production Program in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Factory consist of three production plants: sawmills and kilns, furniture manufacturing facility and a pellets manufacturing facility. Energy audit was focused on analysing energy consumption of furniture manufacturing facility as well as detection of causes of excessed energy consumption. Following, several energy and resources saving measures are proposed with approximated values of energy and CO2 savings. The paper presents detailed analysis of three improvement measures: replacement of the existing boiler, installation of frequency regulators at the engine of the dirt-blast system and introduction of alternative equipment for cleaning instead of the compressed air. Implementation of these measures will provide significant energy savings of 1.328.715 kWh/year and CO2 savings of 85,74 t/year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

U sektoru prirodnog gasa, Republika Srbija je veoma zavisna od gasa koji uvozi iz Rusije. Indikatori sigurnosti snadbevanja predstavljaju jedan od osnovnih elemenata za određivanje energetske bezbednosti i snažne alate za usmeravanje energetskog sektora ka održivom razvoju. Metodolaška analiza prikazana u radu je bila koncentrisana na pokazatelje sigurnosti snadbevanja u oblasti energetske bezbednosti koji se odnose na sektor prirodnog gasa u Republici Srbiji. The security of natural gas supply of the Republic of Serbia has been treated as an urgent, strategic, political and security issue for the last two decades. In the natural gas sector, the Republic of Serbia is very dependent on gas imported from Russia. Security of supply indicators are one of the basic elements for determining energy security and powerful tools for guiding the energy sector towards sustainable development. The methodological analysis presented in the paper was concentrated on security of supply indicators in the field of energy security related to the natural gas sector in the Republic of Serbia.

Abstract

Sustainable energy development is a complex and multi-dimensional concept that is integral to sustainable development. This paper offers an approach to selecting comprehensive and robust indicators to monitor progress towards this international policy objective. Numerous weaknesses in current indicator sets for sustainable energy development have been identified, e.g., lack of transparency, imbalanced representation of the pillars of sustainable development, and the absence of stakeholder engagement during development. Currently, no standardized approach to indicator selection exists. In this paper, an iterative process to indicator selection for sustainable energy development is presented. This process is rooted in stakeholder engagement to ensure a representative indicator set and reduce the potential for bias in indicator selection. A diverse and balanced group of stakeholders should be engaged through interviews, focus groups, and a Delphi survey to capture stakeholders' views of sustainable energy development within a particular setting. Based on stakeholder input, the main themes of sustainable energy development are identified, which corresponds to a thematic conceptual framework for indicator development. These results are connected to established indicators to produce a preliminary set of indicators. Subsequently, a set of indicator assessment criteria are applied to assess the quality of indicators and eliminate overly correlated indicators. In the end, a comprehensive and robust set of indicators for sustainable energy development is produced that reflects the context in question. 14. Examining the Volatility Degree of Mutual Influence among Different Variables: Thermal Power Plants.

Abstract

Energy consumption by industrial sectors has possessed a large proportion of total energy use in many countries especially China. For the purposes of energy conservation, the government of China has implemented long-term policies to continuously assist thermal power industries in improving the energy efficiency. This paper investigates the short- and long-term causal relationship implied by the standard coal consumption per unit product of power (SCC), the rate of electricity consumption of power plant (EC), the total water consumption per unit product of power generation (WC) and the total oil consumption per year (OC). The result indicates that there is mutual influence among variables. The SCC is significantly correlated with the EC, a large amount of EC may impact SCC heavily. The OC is proved to be a new driving factor, and it has long-run equilibrium relationship with other three variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Energy flow mapping and key performance indicators for energy efficiency support : A case study a sports facility

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the energy consumption in a sport facilities and elaborate a set of novel energy indicators to support decision making process. Sports facilities are complex systems having higher significant energy demand than other facilities for service and recreation. These facilities require massive demand of various energy (e.g. heat, cooling, electricity) to meet the requirement of different types of sports facilities leading to a high complexity to understand and describe such facility accurately. To tackle this problem, an energy flow mapping of different energy demand is developed to have more insights on the energy flow in both time and space domain within one of the biggest sports facilities in Sweden, Rocklunda arena. All the energy meters are virtually connected to design a comprehensive mapping of the energy streams. Then the data is processed and analyzed to elaborate a set of novel key performance indicators KPIs allowing a simplistic description of the different aspects of the system consumption profile and the related energy performance.

16. Análisis comparativo de la eficiencia energética de cuatro centros de enseñanza de Quart de Poblet (Valencia) y propuestas de mejora

Abstract

[ES] En este trabajo se realiza un análisis energético de cuatro centros de educación infantil y primaria ubicados en el mismo municipio, Quart de Poblet (Valencia). El análisis se lleva a cabo a partir del estudio de las instalaciones (aspectos constructivos, instalaciones térmicas, instalaciones eléctricas, equipamiento, etc.) de cada uno de los edificios, así como de los consumos y gastos para el desempeño energético. El objetivo final es la obtención de indicadores de eficiencia energética para realizar una comparación energética exhaustiva entre ellos, caracterizando el consumo de energía de los edificios y extrapolando estos resultados al consumo energético del sector docente en la Comunidad Valenciana. Posteriormente, se proponen una serie de medidas de ahorro energético con el objetivo de mejorar la eficiencia energética de los centros y comparar la efectividad de dichas medidas en cada uno de ellos, además de comprobar la viabilidad económica de las mismas. El análisis de implantación de estas medidas se realizará mediante programas de simulación energética así como mediante la aplicación de los conocimientos de instalaciones de energías renovables y eficiencia energética adquiridos durante el Máster. Una vez planteadas estas medidas de mejora, se volverán a calcular los indicadores de eficiencia energética cuantificando el ahorro en el consumo energético del sector que puede suponer su aplicación., [EN] This work consists on an energetic analysis made of four elementary schools located in the same city, Quart de Poblet (Valencia). [ES] En este trabajo se realiza un análisis energético de cuatro centros de educación infantil y primaria ubicados en el mismo municipio, Quart de Poblet (Valencia). El análisis se lleva a cabo a partir del estudio de las instalaciones (aspectos constructivos, instalaciones térmicas, instalaciones eléctricas, equipamiento, etc.) de cada uno de los edificios, así como de los consumos y gastos para el desempeño energético. El objetivo final es la obtención de indicadores de eficiencia energética para realizar una comparación energética exhaustiva entre ellos, caracterizando el consumo de energía de los edificios y extrapolando estos resultados al consumo energético del sector docente en la Comunidad Valenciana. Posteriormente, se proponen una serie de medidas de ahorro energético con el objetivo de mejorar la eficiencia energética de los centros y comparar la efectividad de dichas medidas en cada uno de ellos, además de comprobar la viabilidad económica de las mismas. El análisis de implantación de estas medidas se realizará mediante programas de simulación energética así como mediante la aplicación de los conocimientos de instalaciones de energías renovables y eficiencia energética adquiridos durante el Máster. Abstract: Environmental indicators have been constructed and used as a tool for measuring environmental performance for various purposes in the industrial environment including that of decision-making. However, few studies in the literature address the issue of the quality of the data used for the construction of these indicators, and one of the factors neglected is the uncertainty associated with them. This paper deals with a case study on the uncertainty in the energy indicators of a petrochemical industry in Brazil. In this study, there is an examination of the components involved in making the calculation of energy indicators, as well as their uncertainties. The end result is the development of a methodology that can be used for assessing the uncertainty of the indicators. The evaluation of this uncertainty shows a value greater than appropriate for the intended use of the indicator. In order to reduce this uncertainty, an attempt has been made to point out the most striking features that require investment in human and economic resources, such as improvement in the measurements and implementation of new measurers at critical points. Abstract: Forecasts of energy demand, the fuel mix meeting that demand and the associated emissions are a key requirement for informed energy planning and policy decisions to ensure energy security and address climate change. While there have been many studies on China focusing on the short and medium term (to 2020 and 2050) there is little in the literature focusing on the long term (to 2100). This paper seeks to address those gaps on sectoral energy demands and emissions on long term by following a two-stage approach. It develops key energy indicators on useful energy demand, transport mobility and end use fuel demand for various sectors. The main drivers of these indicators are socio-economic parameters. The indicators are used to project energy service demands and emissions forward for China in TIMES G5 model at least cost approach. The results from this reference scenario suggest that China will require approximately 4 Gtoe of primary energy, by the end of the 21st century to deliver 3 Gtoe final energy consumption, 10 PWh of electricity generation, 1.3 Gtoe of energy imports, which will results in 10 Gt CO2 emissions. Abstract: As Taiwan has a dense population and only limited natural resources, the government began actively establishing a Taiwan''s sustainable development indicators (TSDI) system in 2003, which was developed with reference to the Pressure–State Response (PSR) framework to evaluate the progress towards sustainability. Energy is a very important factor in leading to sustainable development at the national level. However, there are only two indicators concerning the energy sustainability in the TSDI system. This paper summarizes the current status of energy supply, energy consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and renewable energy production since the year 2000. The updated information on the TSDI was also addressed and analyzed to imply the progress towards energy sustainability during 2000–2008. Finally, the weighted-sum method was proposed to make an analysis of energy sustainability from Taiwan''s renewable energy production, showing that this country has experienced a significant progress toward energy sustainability in recent years. Abstract: Energy use as a single indicator or in a set of few indicators is often used in applied research in the building, transportation and energy sectors. However, the environmental relevance of energy indicators is seldom questioned. The relation between environmental relevance and energy indicators might seem obvious. Nevertheless, how this is obvious has not been thoroughly discussed. The aim of this paper is to investigate the environmental relevance of the energy indicator and discuss implications for its use. The approach is to express environmental pressure in different environmental impact categories and determine the contribution to these from energy use. 24. Probabilistic fatigue life of welded plate joints under uncertainty in Arctic areas.

Abstract

This paper develops a new practical framework of high-cycle fatigue (HCF) probability analysis of local welded plate joints considering the uncertainty in Arctic areas. The framework includes 1) a meta-model of the local energy concentration factor relying on the genetic algorithm and neural network (GA-NN) approach, 2) the identification of uncertainties in the fatigue assessment procedure, and 3) the probability analysis relying on the Monte Carlo simulation with Latin hypercube sampling method. The GA-NN determines the interactive relationship among the geometrical properties for a good estimation of the energy-based indicator concentration factor. The probability analysis considers the uncertainty caused by the meat-model, the local welding geometry, the Young modulus under different temperatures, and the combination of the ice and wave loadings. To determine the uncertainties involved in probability analysis, this study conducts a series of experimental measurements and high-cycle fatigue tests of cruciform welded plate joints. Furthermore, this study discusses the effect of the ice loading, maximum wave stress, and main plate thickness of welded plate joints on the expected fatigue life. The additional ice loading on the welded plate joints can almost cut the expected fatigue life in 33% in comparison with that only under wave loadings, implying the necessity of considering ice loading in Arctic areas. This study also proposes a probability S-N curve with the cumulative probability of 50% based on the maximum local energy-based indicator to estimate the expected fatigue life. Abstract

Energy consumption by industrial sectors has possessed a large proportion of total energy use in many countries especially China. For the purposes of energy conservation, the government of China has implemented long-term policies to continuously assist thermal power industries in improving the energy efficiency. This paper investigates the short- and long-term causal relationship implied by the standard coal consumption per unit product of power (SCC), the rate of electricity consumption of power plant (EC), the total water consumption per unit product of power generation (WC) and the total oil consumption per year (OC). The result indicates that there is mutual influence among variables. The SCC is significantly correlated with the EC, a large amount of EC may impact SCC heavily. The OC is proved to be a new driving factor, and it has long-run equilibrium relationship with other three variables.

26. Simulation For Input-Output Energy Structure In Agriculture: Bangladesh

Abstract

This paper presents a computer simulation model based on system dynamics methodology for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of input energy structure in agriculture and Bangladesh is used here as a case study for model validation. The model provides an input energy structure linking the major energy flows with human energy and draft energy from cattle as well as tractors and/or power tillers, irrigation, chemical fertilizer and pesticide. The evaluation is made in terms of different energy dependent indicators. During the simulation period, the energy input to agriculture increased from 6.1 to 19.15 GJ/ha i.e. 2.14 fold corresponding to energy output in terms of food, fodder and fuel increase from 71.55 to 163.58 GJ/ha i.e. 1.28 fold from the base year. This result indicates that the energy input in Bangladeshi agricultural production is increasing faster than the energy output. Problems such as global warming, nutrient loading and pesticide pollution can associate with this increasing input. Abstract

Diplomová práce se zabývá energetickým auditem vodovodů. První část je věnována současnému stavu problematiky v České republice, ale především této problematiky v zahraničí. Dále je v práci zpracována struktura energetického auditu podle získaných zkušeností z odborných článků a navržen vzorový příklad, na kterém je tento audit proveden, jako první varianta je energeticky náročný vodovodní řad a druhá varianta energeticky úspornější vodovodní řad. Poslední část je věnována provedení energetického auditu na reálném vodovodním řadu v obci Kateřinice v okrese Vsetín., This Disertation deals with energetical audit of aqueduct. First part is dedicated to the current status in Czech Republic, but expecially abroad. Other part processes structure of energetical audit according to the knowledge gained and also from academic articles and set up an example, where this audit is made. Firts variant is energetically intensive water line and other variant is nergetically economical. Poslední část je věnována provedení energetického auditu na reálném vodovodním řadu v obci Kateřinice v okrese Vsetín., This Disertation deals with energetical audit of aqueduct. First part is dedicated to the current status in Czech Republic, but expecially abroad. Other part processes structure of energetical audit according to the knowledge gained and also from academic articles and set up an example, where this audit is made. Firts variant is energetically intensive water line and other variant is nergetically economical. Last part id dedicated to perform an energetical audit on real water line in Kateřinice village, Vsetín district.

Abstract

Diplomová práce se zabývá energetickým auditem vodovodů. První část je věnována současnému stavu problematiky v České republice, ale především této problematiky v zahraničí.
