Abstract Surgical repair of abdominal aortic aneurism (AAA) with horseshoe kidney (HK) is challenging because of several accessory renal arteries (RAs), variable in number, branches, and vascular territories, with subsequent variable renal damage. The identification of RAs and vascular territories could contribute to surgical planning. We developed a semiautomatic presurgical computed tomography angiography (CTA)-based model to measure the renal volume of each RA, validated on postsurgical CTA in patients with HK treated for AAA. Renal parenchyma volume was extracted on both CTAs (Vol_Totpre and Vol_Totpost) after labeling RAs ostia and vascular endpoints by two observers using a semiautomatic model by assigning each renal voxel to the closest vascular ending, obtaining volumes for each vascular territory. Number of RAs number was 4.0 ± 1.4 (mean ± standard deviation (SD)), Vol_Totpre 360 ± 76.5 cm3; kidney volume loss at surgery (KVLS) (Vol_Totpre minus Vol_Totpost) 51.9 ± 35.4 cm3; percentage of kidney loss 15.2 ± 11.6%. KVLS and predicted kidney volume loss on preoperative CTA (PKVL) were strongly correlated (r = 0.93; p = 0.023). Interobserver agreement was good (mean bias = 0.000001 ± 1.96 SD of 19.1 cm3). Presurgical semiautomatic segmentation of vascular territories in patients with HK and AAA is feasible. Relevance statement This software allowed the preoperative calculation of renal volume perfused by each renal artery in the challenging association of the horseshoe kidney and abdominal aortic aneurism. It helps to determine the feasibility of surgical resection of arteries, thereby improving surgical planning and reducing the risk of postoperative renal function deterioration. Key Points The association between horseshoe kidney and abdominal aortic aneurism is a challenging condition that may require renal vascular resection. A semiautomatic model measures renal volume perfused by each artery on preoperative computed tomography angiography with high accuracy. Customized use of this tool could improve surgical management by determining which arteries can be safely resected during surgery. Graphical Abstract

Abstract We propose an orbifold lattice formulation of QCD suitable for quantum simulations. We show explicitly how to encode gauge degrees of freedom into qubits using noncompact variables, and how to write down a simple truncated Hamiltonian in the coordinate basis. We show that SU(3) gauge group variables and quarks in the fundamental representation can be implemented straightforwardly on qubits, for arbitrary truncation of the gauge manifold.

Abstract We construct a model of Pauli spin operators with all-to-all 4-local interactions by replacing Majorana fermions in the SYK model with spin operators. Equivalently, we replace fermions with hard-core bosons. We study this model numerically and compare the properties with those of the SYK model. We observe a striking quantitative coincidence between the spin model and the SYK model, which suggests that this spin model is strongly chaotic and, perhaps, can play some role in holography. We also discuss the path-integral approach with multi-local fields and the possibility of quantum simulations. This model may be an interesting target for quantum simulations because Pauli spins are easier to implement than fermions on qubit-based quantum devices.

Introduction: This systematic review aims to analyze the current literature regarding 30-day mortality and postoperative acute kidney disease (AKI) in complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (cAAAs), which included juxtarenal aortic aneurysm (JAA), suprarenal aortic aneurysm (SRAA), and type IV thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) open surgery (OS), to evaluate the impact of renal perfusion on AKI and to try to define which is the best way to perform it. Methods: A literature search in PubMed and Cochrane Library was performed, and articles published from January 1986 to January 2024 reporting on JAA, SRAA, and TAAA type IV open surgery management were identified. Multicenter studies, single-center series, and case series with ≥10 patients were considered eligible. Comparisons of outcomes of patients who underwent OS for complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (cAAAs) with or without perfusion of the renal arteries were analyzed when available. The titles, abstracts, and full texts were evaluated by two authors independently. The primary outcomes included AKI and 30-day mortality rates. The new-onset dialysis rate was considered a secondary outcome. Results: A total of 295 articles were evaluated, and 21 were included, totaling 5708 patients treated for cAAAs with OS. The male patients totaled 4094 (71.7%), with a mean age of 70.35 ± 8.01 and a mean renal ischemia time of 32.14 ± 12.89 min. Data were collected and analyzed, at first in the entire cohort and then divided into two groups (no perfusion of the renal arteries—group A vs. selective perfusion—group B), with 2516 patients (44.08%) who underwent cAAAs OS without perfusion of the renal arteries and 3192 patients (55.92%) with perfusion. In group B, four types of renal perfusion were reported. Among the 21 studies included, 10 reported on selective renal perfusion in cAAA OS, with several types of fluids described: (1) “enriched” Ringer’s solution, (2) “Custodiol” (Istidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate or Custodiol HTKsolution), (3) other cold (4 °C) solutions (i.e., several combinations of 4 °C isotonic heparinized balanced salt solution containing mannitol, sodium bicarbonate, and methylprednisolone), and (4) warm blood. Thirty-day mortality for patients in group A was 4.25% (107/2516) vs. 4.29% (137/3192) in group B. The reported incidence of AKI and new onset of dialysis was, respectively, 22.14% (557/2516) and 5.45% (137/2516) for group A and 22.49% (718/3192) and 4.32% (138/3192) for group B. A total of 579 patients presented with chronic kidney disease (CKD) at admission across all studies, which included 350 (13.91%) in group A vs. 229 (7.17%) in group B. Acute kidney injury, 30-day mortality, and new-onset dialysis rate were reported in four subgroups: (1) In the “Ringer” group, 30-day mortality was 2.52% (3/113), AKI affected 27.73% (33/119) of patients, and the new-onset dialysis rate was 2.52% (3/113). (2) In the “Custodiol” group, 30-day mortality was 3.70% (3/81), AKI affected 20.17% (24/81) of patients, and the new-onset dialysis rate was 2.46% (2/81). (3) In the “cold solutions” group (i.e., NaCl and mannitol), 30-day mortality was 4.38% (130/2966), AKI affected 21.81% (647/2966) of patients, and the new-onset dialysis rate was 4.48% (133/2966). (4) In the “Warm blood” group, 30-day mortality was 3.85% (1/26), AKI affected 53.84% (14/26) of patients, and the new-onset dialysis rate was 0% (0/26). Conclusions: This systematic review highlights the lack of standard definitions for AKI, CKD, and the type of renal perfusion. Despite similar results in terms of AKI and 30-day mortality, renal perfusion seems to be protective of the new-onset hemodialysis rate. Moreover, Custodiol appears to have lower rates of AKI and hemodialysis than the other perfusion types. A prospective randomized controlled trial to perform further subgroup analysis and research the various types of renal perfusion may be necessary to identify possible benefits.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be probes of the early Universe, but currently, only 26% of GRBs observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory have known redshifts ( z ) due to observational limitations. To address this, we estimated the GRB redshift (distance) via a supervised statistical learning model that uses optical afterglow observed by Swift and ground-based telescopes. The inferred redshifts are strongly correlated (a Pearson coefficient of 0.93) with the observed redshifts, thus proving the reliability of this method. The inferred and observed redshifts allow us to estimate the number of GRBs occurring at a given redshift (GRB rate) to be 8.47–9 yr ^−1 Gpc ^−1 for 1.9 < z < 2.3. Since GRBs come from the collapse of massive stars, we compared this rate with the star formation rate, highlighting a discrepancy of a factor of 3 at z < 1.

Abstract We test the gauge/gravity duality between the matrix model and type IIA string theory at low temperatures with unprecedented accuracy. To this end, we perform lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, which is the one-parameter deformation of the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model, taking both the large N and continuum limits. We leverage the fact that sufficiently small flux parameters in the BMN matrix model have a negligible impact on the energy of the system while stabilizing the flat directions so that simulations at smaller N than in the BFSS matrix model are possible. Hence, we can perform a precision measurement of the large N continuum energy at the lowest temperatures to date. The energy is in perfect agreement with supergravity predictions including estimations of α′-corrections from previous simulations. At the lowest temperature where we can simulate efficiently (T = 0.25λ 1/3, where λ is the ’t Hooft coupling), the difference in energy to the pure supergravity prediction is less than 10%. Furthermore, we can extract the coefficient of the 1/N 4 corrections at a fixed temperature with good accuracy, which was previously unknown.

Abstract We consider the partially-deconfined saddle of large-N pure Yang-Mills theory lying between confined and deconfined phases, in which the color degrees of freedom split into confined and deconfined sectors. Based on the microscopic mechanism of deconfinement, we argue that a flux tube is formed in the confined sector and a linear confinement potential is generated. The string tension should not depend on the size of the confined sector. We provide evidence for the case of the finite-temperature strong-coupling lattice gauge theory. In particular, we make analytic predictions assuming linear confinement in the confined sector, and then confirm these by numerical simulations. We discuss some implications of the conjecture to QCD and holography.

Abstract We test a conjecture by Maldacena and Milekhin for the ungauged version of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model by lattice Monte Carlo simulation. The numerical results reproduce the perturbative and gravity results in the limit of large and small flux parameter, respectively, and are consistent with the conjecture.

A state-of-the-art semi-analytic gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow model with synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission has been applied for the first time for parameter inference using real GRB data. We analyzed the famous GRB 190114C as a case study. GRB 190114C, characterized by its long duration and high luminosity, was observed by many ground-based and orbiting telescopes spanning a wide range of electromagnetic wavelengths, from radio to GeV gamma rays. We used two advanced algorithms for inference: a nested sampling algorithm called UltraNest and an MCMC algorithm emcee. Evoking the standard afterglow model, the inference result and the best-fit values lead to an initial bulk Lorentz factor (a rough estimate of Γ=526), which aligns with the values often seen in GRBs identified by the Fermi-LAT instrument. Similarly to the best-fit values of other studies in the literature, the derived values of microphysical parameters, the circumburst density, and the kinetic efficiency are consistent with those found after modeling the multi-wavelength observations in GRB 190114C. We show that the SSC from the forward-shock region can only describe the highest-energy photons above a few GeVs.

Abstract We study the confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model (often called the BFSS matrix model) and its one-parameter deformation (the BMN matrix model) numerically by lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Our results confirm general expectations from the dual string/M-theory picture for strong coupling. In particular, we observe the confined phase in the BFSS matrix model, which is a nontrivial consequence of the M-theory picture. We suggest that these models provide us with an ideal framework to study the Schwarzschild black hole, M-theory, and furthermore, the parameter region of the phase transition between type IIA superstring theory and M-theory. A detailed study of M-theory via lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the D0-brane matrix model might be doable with much smaller computational resources than previously expected.

Abstract We provide evidence for partial deconfinement — the deconfinement of a SU(M) subgroup of the SU(N) gauge group — by using lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We take matrix models as concrete examples. By appropriately fixing the gauge, we observe that the M × M submatrices deconfine. This gives direct evidence for partial deconfinement at strong coupling. We discuss the applications to QCD and holography.

It is for the first time that quantum simulation for high-energy physics (HEP) is studied in the U.S. decadal particle-physics community planning, and in fact until recently, this was not considered a mainstream topic in the community. This fact speaks of a remarkable rate of growth of this subfield over the past few years, stimulated by the impressive advancements in quantum information sciences (QIS) and associated technologies over the past decade, and the significant investment in this area by the government and private sectors in the U.S. and other countries. High-energy physicists have quickly identified problems of importance to our understanding of nature at the most fundamental level, from tiniest distances to cosmological extents, that are intractable with classical computers but may benefit from quantum advantage. They have initiated, and continue to carry out, a vigorous program in theory, algorithm, and hardware co-design for simulations of relevance to the HEP mission. This Roadmap is an attempt to bring this exciting and yet challenging area of research to the spotlight, and to elaborate on what the promises, requirements, challenges, and potential solutions are over the next decade and beyond.

Redshift measurement of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) remains a time-consuming and challenging task, as it requires follow up spectroscopic observations and detailed analysis. Hence, there exists an urgent requirement for alternative redshift estimation techniques. The use of machine learning (ML) for this purpose has been growing over the last few years, primarily due to the availability of large-scale galactic surveys. However, due to observational errors, a significant fraction of these data sets often have missing entries, rendering that fraction unusable for ML regression applications. In this study, we demonstrate the performance of an imputation technique called Multivariate Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE), which rectifies the issue of missing data entries by imputing them using the available information in the catalog. We use the Fermi-LAT Fourth Data Release Catalog (4LAC) and impute 24% of the catalog. Subsequently, we follow the methodology described in Dainotti et al. (ApJ, 2021, 920, 118) and create an ML model for estimating the redshift of 4LAC AGNs. We present results which highlight positive impact of MICE imputation technique on the machine learning models performance and obtained redshift estimation accuracy.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), as they are observed at high redshift ( z = 9.4), are vital to cosmological studies and investigating Population III stars. To tackle these studies, we need correlations among relevant GRB variables with the requirement of small uncertainties on their variables. Thus, we must have good coverage of GRB light curves (LCs). However, gaps in the LC hinder the precise determination of GRB properties and are often unavoidable. Therefore, extensive categorization of GRB LCs remains a hurdle. We address LC gaps using a stochastic reconstruction, wherein we fit two preexisting models (the Willingale model; W07; and a broken power law; BPL) to the observed LC, then use the distribution of flux residuals from the original data to generate data to fill in the temporal gaps. We also demonstrate a model-independent LC reconstruction via Gaussian processes. At 10% noise, the uncertainty of the end time of the plateau, its correspondent flux, and the temporal decay index after the plateau decreases by 33.3%, 35.03%, and 43.32% on average for the W07, and by 33.3%, 30.78%, 43.9% for the BPL, respectively. The uncertainty of the slope of the plateau decreases by 14.76% in the BPL. After using the Gaussian process technique, we see similar trends of a decrease in uncertainty for all model parameters for both the W07 and BPL models. These improvements are essential for the application of GRBs as standard candles in cosmology, for the investigation of theoretical models, and for inferring the redshift of GRBs with future machine-learning analyses.

To simulate bosons on a qubit- or qudit-based quantum computer, one has to regularize the theory by truncating infinite-dimensional local Hilbert spaces to finite dimensions. In the search for practical quantum applications, it is important to know how big the truncation errors can be. In general, it is not easy to estimate errors unless we have a good quantum computer. In this paper, we show that traditional sampling methods on classical devices, specifically Markov Chain Monte Carlo, can address this issue for a rather generic class of bosonic systems with a reasonable amount of computational resources available today. As a demonstration, we apply this idea to the scalar field theory on a two-dimensional lattice, with a size that goes beyond what is achievable using exact diagonalization methods. This method can be used to estimate the resources needed for realistic quantum simulations of bosonic theories, and also, to check the validity of the results of the corresponding quantum simulations.

Abstract We study the bosonic matrix model obtained as the high-temperature limit of two-dimensional maximally supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. So far, no consensus about the order of the deconfinement transition in this theory has been reached and this hinders progress in understanding the nature of the black hole/black string topology change from the gauge/gravity duality perspective. On the one hand, previous works considered the deconfinement transition consistent with two transitions which are of second and third order. On the other hand, evidence for a first order transition was put forward more recently. We perform high-statistics lattice Monte Carlo simulations at large N and small lattice spacing to establish that the transition is really of first order. Our findings flag a warning that the required large-N and continuum limit might not have been reached in earlier publications, and that was the source of the discrepancy. Moreover, our detailed results confirm the existence of a new partially deconfined phase which describes non-uniform black strings via the gauge/gravity duality. This phase exhibits universal features already predicted in quantum field theory.

Abstract External iliac artery endofibrosis is a rare pathology that affects high-level endurance athletes, especially cyclists. Classical symptoms include pain, loss of power, and/or cramp in the affected limb while training at maximal effort. The patient’s lack of atherosclerotic risk factors makes clinical suspicion of arteriopathy challenging. Moreover, the best management of such patients is still a subject of discussion. We report the case of a 36-year-old professional female endurance cyclist who presented with lower extremity pain during training. Right external iliac artery endofibrosis was diagnosed and the patient underwent surgical treatment. At two-months follow-up, she reported significant improvement in symptoms. This case highlights the importance of diagnosing peripheral vascular disease in young patients and athletes, who do not fit the ordinary profile of patients with atherosclerotic risk factors.

Abstract We study the thermodynamics of the ‘ungauged’ D0-brane matrix model by Monte Carlo simulation. Our results appear to be consistent with the conjecture by Maldacena and Milekhin.

Matrix quantum mechanics plays various important roles in theoretical physics, such as a holographic description of quantum black holes, and it underpins the only practical numerical approach to the study of complex high-dimensional supergravity theories. Understanding quantum black holes and the role of entanglement in a holographic setup is of paramount importance for the realization of a quantum theory of gravity. Moreover, a complete numerical understanding of the holographic duality and the emergence of geometric space-time features from microscopic degrees of freedom could pave the way for new discoveries in quantum information science. Euclidean lattice Monte Carlo simulations are the de facto numerical tool for understanding the spectrum of large matrix models and have been used to test the holographic duality. However, they are not tailored to extract dynamical properties or even the quantum wave function of the ground state of matrix models. Quantum computing and deep learning provide potentially useful approaches to study the dynamics of matrix quantum mechanics. If successful in the context of matrix models, these rapidly improving numerical techniques could become the new Swiss army knife of quantum gravity practitioners. In this paper, we perform the first systematic survey for quantum computing and deep-learning approaches to matrix quantum mechanics, comparing them to lattice Monte Carlo simulations. These provide baseline benchmarks before addressing more complicated problems. In particular, we test the performance of each method by calculating the low-energy spectrum.

The difference from 4 to 6 σ in the Hubble constant (H0) between the values observed with the local (Cepheids and Supernovae Ia, SNe Ia) and the high-z probes (Cosmic Microwave Background obtained by the Planck data) still challenges the astrophysics and cosmology community. Previous analysis has shown that there is an evolution in the Hubble constant that scales as f(z)=H0/(1+z)η, where H0 is H0(z=0) and η is the evolutionary parameter. Here, we investigate if this evolution still holds by using the SNe Ia gathered in the Pantheon sample and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. We assume H0=70kms−1Mpc−1 as the local value and divide the Pantheon into three bins ordered in increasing values of redshift. Similar to our previous analysis but varying two cosmological parameters contemporaneously (H0, Ω0m in the ΛCDM model and H0, wa in the w0waCDM model), for each bin we implement a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo analysis (MCMC) obtaining the value of H0 assuming Gaussian priors to restrict the parameters spaces to values we expect from our prior knowledge of the current cosmological models and to avoid phantom Dark Energy models with w<−1. Subsequently, the values of H0 are fitted with the model f(z). Our results show that a decreasing trend with η∼10−2 is still visible in this sample. The η coefficient reaches zero in 2.0 σ for the ΛCDM model up to 5.8 σ for w0waCDM model. This trend, if not due to statistical fluctuations, could be explained through a hidden astrophysical bias, such as the effect of stretch evolution, or it requires new theoretical models, a possible proposition is the modified gravity theories, f(R). This analysis is meant to further cast light on the evolution of H0 and it does not specifically focus on constraining the other parameters. This work is also a preparatory to understand how the combined probes still show an evolution of the H0 by redshift and what is the current status of simulations on GRB cosmology to obtain the uncertainties on the Ω0m comparable with the ones achieved through SNe Ia.

Abstract A black hole described in SU(N ) gauge theory consists of N D-branes. By separating one of the D-branes from others and studying the interaction between them, the black hole geometry can be probed. In order to obtain quantitative results, we employ the lattice Monte Carlo simulation. As a proof of the concept, we perform an explicit calculation in the matrix model dual to the black zero-brane in type IIA string theory. We demonstrate this method actually works in the high temperature region, where the stringy correction is large. We argue possible dual gravity interpretations.

We present a determination of nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts for ℓ≥0. The S, P, D and F phase shifts for both the spin-triplet and spin-singlet channels are computed with lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics. For ℓ>0, this is the first lattice QCD calculation using the Lüscher finite-volume formalism. This required the design and implementation of novel lattice methods involving displaced sources and momentum-space cubic sinks. To demonstrate the utility of our approach, the calculations were performed in the SU(3)-flavor limit where the light quark masses have been tuned to the physical strange quark mass, corresponding to mπ=mK≈800 MeV. In this work, we have assumed that only the lowest partial waves contribute to each channel, ignoring the unphysical partial wave mixing that arises within the finite-volume formalism. This assumption is only valid for sufficiently low energies; we present evidence that it holds for our study using two different channels. Two spatial volumes of V≈(3.5 fm)3 and V≈(4.6 fm)3 were used. The finite-volume spectrum is extracted from the exponential falloff of the correlation functions. Said spectrum is mapped onto the infinite volume phase shifts using the generalization of the Lüscher formalism for two-nucleon systems.

Background. Extracranial vertebral artery aneurysms are a rare cause of embolic stroke; surgical and endovascular therapy options are debated and long-term complication may occur. Case Report. A 53-year-old man affected by neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) came to our attention for recurrent vertebrobasilar embolic strokes, caused by a primary giant, partially thrombosed, fusiform aneurysm of the left extracranial vertebral artery. The aneurysm was treated by endovascular approach through deposition of Guglielmi Detachable Coils in the proximal segment of the left vertebral artery. Six years later the patient presented stroke recurrence. Cerebral angiography and Color Doppler Ultrasound well characterized the unique hemodynamic condition developed over the years responsible for the new embolic event: the aneurysm had been revascularized from its distal portion by reverse blood flow coming from the patent vertebrobasilar axis. A biphasic Doppler signal in the left vertebral artery revealed a peculiar behavior of the blood flow, alternately directed to the aneurysm and backwards to the basilar artery. Surgical ligation of the distal left vertebral artery and excision of the aneurysm were thus performed. Conclusion. This is the first described case of NF1-associated extracranial vertebral artery aneurysm presenting with recurrent embolic stroke. Complete exclusion of the aneurysm from the blood circulation is advisable to achieve full resolution of the embolic source.

Restoration work carried out at Ostia in the past century, often the subject of negative appreciation, deserves a thorough critical review. Keeping in mind the ideological constraints of the time, the issue of reconstruction can be followed through the close bond then existing between the historical value of architecture and the culture of project. A methodological procedure by which the transmission of the monuments’ identity also meant a ‘revealing’ interpretation, and not merely conservation as such or contemplation of the archaeological ruins.

Abstract A ruptured descending thoracic aortic aneurysm (rDTAA) is a life-threatening condition associated with high morbidity and mortality. Endovascular treatment for rDTAA promotes effective aneurysm exclusion with a minimally invasive approach. The authors report a case of a 76-year-old man with hemodynamically unstable 9-cm-diameter rDTAA treated with emergency thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR).
