Abstract

Plant defensins are small cysteine-rich peptides that inhibit the growth of a broad range of microbes. In this article, we describe NmDef02, a novel cDNA encoding a putative defensin isolated from Nicotiana megalosiphon upon inoculation with the tobacco blue mould pathogen Peronospora hyoscyami f.sp. tabacina. NmDef02 was heterologously expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris, and the purified recombinant protein was found to display antimicrobial activity in vitro against important plant pathogens. Constitutive expression of NmDef02 gene in transgenic tobacco and potato plants enhanced resistance against various plant microbial pathogens, including the oomycete Phytophthora infestans, causal agent of the economically important potato late blight disease, under greenhouse and field conditions

Abstract

This article presents a case study of a kindergarten girl from a Bangladeshi immigrant family who demonstrates her multiliteracies as she negotiates the multiple demands of the mandated literacy curriculum. The case is drawn from a year-long ethnographic inquiry of the literacy practices and cultural models in a balanced literacy curriculum where digital and print-based literacies intersected. Drawing on theories of discourse, multimodality, and positioning, the multi-level analysis shows that the child's literacies and social positionings were constantly in motion as she designed texts and her identities across writer's workshop and computer lab. She fluidly combined linguistic, visual, and bodily resources to design meanings on pages and screens, but her literacies were not easily captured on a printed page and thus she was not recognized as a successful in writer's workshop. In the computer lab, however, her multimodal literacies were more visible and she became someone with knowledge and skill who could act as tutor, friend, and successful literacy learner. The case suggests that the shape-shifting literacies and identities of a child considered "at risk" remain largely unseen in a monomodal, monolingual, and monocultural literacy curriculum. 86 2 89 98 ID: RN241253234; Article. Abstract

El tránsito de intestino delgado con sulfato de bario permite una adecuada visualización de las alteraciones endoluminales, pero con limitaciones tales como no visualizar el compromiso y extensión extraparietal. La Resonancia Magnética aparece como una alternativa, con beneficios como evitar radiación y permitir la evaluación de detalles anatómicos de la pared intestinal y estructuras adyacentes. En once pacientes con alteración del tránsito intestinal, se realizó resonancia magnética, usando agua en un volumen de 1500 cc como contraste oral administrado en un corto período de tiempo, obteniendo imágenes en resonador de 1.5 Tesla, con gradiente de 25 mT/m. Las imágenes se compararon con estudio de intestino con bario para determinar tiempo de tránsito, parámetros de distensión y caracterización de la patología. Una correlación de 90.9% y un valor Kappa de 0.82 (correlación excelente) del intestino delgado patológico y de las estructuras extraluminales adyacentes se logró con resonancia magnética, haciendo de esta técnica una alternativa válida y efectiva al estudio convencional del intestino delgado con bario en nuestra serie; sin embargo se requieren estudios con muestras mayores para confirmarla Small bowel transit with barium sulphate allows adequate visualization of endoluminal alterations, but with drawbacks such as limited usefulness for wall compromise and extra parietal extension. Magnetic resonance appears to be an alternative, given its benefits avoiding radiation and allowing evaluation of anatomic details of the small bowel and adjacent structures. Eleven patients with abnormal result of intestinal transit with barium underwent magnetic resonance with water 1500 cc p.o in brief period, with images achieved in a 1.5 Tesla resonator, with 25 mT/m gradient, using optimized sequences. Comparison in regards of time of transit, distension, and characterization of pathology was made. An adequate correlation of the pathologic small bowel and its adjacent structures is achieved with magnetic resonance compared with transit with barium, achieving 90.9% of simple correlation and 0.82 Kappa value (excellent correlation), making this technique a valid and effective alternative to the conventional study of the small bowel with barium in our experience. Larger series are required to confirm this

38. [Role of echography in septic arthritis of the hip in the newborn]

Abstract

Pyogenic arthritis of the hip in neonates remains a serious problem. The sequelae of delay in diagnosis and treatment can be crippling. Five hips, in four neonates, with a presumed diagnosis of septic arthritis were examined with ultrasonography. In two hips ultrasonography found intracapsular effusion. In the remaining three hips there were no pathological findings. In the two hips with joint effusion an arthrotomy was performed, dislodging pus in both cases. Follow-up radiographs and ultrasonographies of the five hips showed normal joint anatomy. In neonates, ultrasonography provides an early and reliable evaluation of hips in which septic arthritis is suspected.
