The Diaprepes root weevil (DRW), Diaprepes abbreviatus , is a broadly polyphagous invasive pest of agriculture in the southern United States and the Caribbean. Its genome was sequenced, assembled, and annotated to study genomic correlates of specialized plant-feeding and invasiveness and to facilitate the development of new methods for DRW control. The 1.69 Gb D. abbreviatus genome assembly was distributed across 653 contigs, with an N50 of 7.8 Mb and the largest contig of 62 Mb. Most of the genome was comprised of repetitive sequences, with 66.17% in transposable elements, 5.75% in macrosatellites, and 2.06% in microsatellites. Most expected orthologous genes were present and fully assembled, with 99.5% of BUSCO genes present and 1.5% duplicated. One hundred and nine contigs (27.19 Mb) were identified as putative fragments of the X and Y sex chromosomes, and homology assessment with other beetle X chromosomes indicated a possible sex chromosome turnover event. Genome annotation identified 18,412 genes, including 43 putative horizontally transferred (HT) loci. Notably, 258 genes were identified from gene families known to encode plant cell wall degrading enzymes and invertases, including carbohydrate esterases, polysaccharide lyases, and glycoside hydrolases (GH). GH genes were unusually numerous, with 239 putative genes representing 19 GH families. All species of the genus Stereorhynchus Lacordaire, 1863 are revised. Two new species are described as new to science: S. burgerti sp. nov. from South Africa, Northern Cape province and S. namibicus sp. nov. from South Africa, Northern Cape province and Namibia, Otjozondjupa and Khomas provinces. S. artisquamis Marshall, 1938 stat. prom. is raised to specific rank from S. turneri artisquamis Marshall, 1938. S. lateralis Hustache, 1936 syn. nov. is synonymised with S. simoni Hustache, 1922. Lectotypes of Stereorhynchus simoni Hustache, 1922 and Stereorhynchus lateralis Hustache, 1936 are designated. A new weevil genus Kabakiellus Davidian, gen. n. (Entiminae: Blosyrini) is described from the western part of Yunnan Province in China. It is characterized in the following features: the rostrum is slightly or moderately narrowed apically; antennal scrobes are clearly visible in dorsal view; the pronotum is widest at middle, evenly rounded laterally; apical tubercles at the 5-th elytral interstriae are not protruding beyond the apex of elytra; hind tibiae of the male are with the distinct elongated or flattened process at the place of the mucro; the armament of internal sac is with numerous spinules and spicules and two sclerites at the level of the base of the penis. The new genus is well distinguished from the most genera of the tribe Blosyrini in presence of the process at the place of the mucro on the hind tibiae of the male, as well as the absence of anterior sclerites, endophallic rods and clusters of spinules in the armament of the endophallus. The new genus is similar to Stiltoblosyrus Davidian, 2020 in structure of hind tibiae of the male and the reduced armament of endophallus, from which differs in the pronotum evenly rounded laterally and in presence two posterior sclerites of the endophallus. Two new species including K. fugongicus sp. n. (type species), K. alpicolus sp. n. are described from Yunnan Province of China. Stiltoblosyrus lisu Davidian, 2020 is transferred to the genus Kabakiellus (K. lisu, comb. n.). Kabakiellus fugongicus sp. n. is the most similar to K. lisu and easily differs in the structure of straight hind tibiae of the male with more shortened and dorso-ventrally flattened process at the place of the mucro. Kabakiellus alpicola sp. n. differs from congeners in having the smaller body size and in the structure of the hind tibiae of the male with ovate flattened process at the place of the mucro. Simple Summary: The taxonomic status of O. smreczynskii Cmol., 1968 as a valid species was finally confirmed on the basis of the results of molecular, morphological and anatomical studies. An urban species, with a distribution closely associated with human activities, this weevil is regarded as a pest of gardens and ornamental plants. The set of characters used for its identification is provided. The structure of the female genitalia turned out to be useful for differentiating the sister species O. smreczynskii and O. rotundus. The entire life cycle, morphology of immatures and phenology of O. smreczynskii were examined in detail both in the laboratory and in the field. Host plants are listed and the unique feeding signs of O. smreczynskii are illustrated. The revised distributions of O. smreczynskii and O. rotundus show that the bisexual O. rotundus is being displaced by the parthenogenetic O. smreczynskii. The hypothetical origin of O. smreczynskii given here is based on the natural distribution of its host plants. The mature larva and pupa of Otiorhynchus smreczynskii are described and illustrated with complete chaetotaxy for the first time. Five larval instars and the factors for larval growth are determined, and the larval development of this species is comprehensively described. In order to confirm species affiliation, selected larvae were subjected to genetic analysis (mtCOI). Host plants and unique feeding signs of some Entiminae species are presented, and all available data on development are documented and interpreted. Additionally, the morphometry of 78 specimens (48 of O. smreczynskii and 30 of O. rotundus) was examined in order to verify the usefulness of morphological features in distinguishing both species. The female genitalia of both species are illustrated, described and compared with each other for the first time. A new weevil genus Igorius Davidian, gen. n. (Entiminae: Blosyrini) is described from the south-western part of Sichuan Province in China. It is characterized in the following features: rostrum subquadrate; pronotum widest between of the middle and preapical third, clearly compressed laterally in basal half, on disc with numerous granules and narrow median carina; 5th elytral interstriae in preapical part strongly keeled with tubercle at the end almost obliquely descending to the apical declivity, distinctly protruding beyond the apical margin of elytra. Apical margin of elytra between protruding fifth interstriaes, straight or slightly bisinuate. Four new species including I. pictus sp. n. (type species), I. elegans sp. n., I. pastoralis sp. n. and I. tristis sp. n. are described and provided with a key. Male of I. pictus sp. n. easily differs from other in the following features: inside margin of fore tibiae in the middle part is strongly flattened and bent dorsally, endofallus armament with distinct pair of endophallic rods, which are somewhat shorter, than pair of anterior sclerites. Igorius elegans sp. n. is the most similar to I. pictus sp. n., its fore tibiae are without a flattened extension in the middle part and pair of endophallic rods barely marked. Igorius pastoralis sp. n. is characterized in fore tibiae strongly curved in apical half, on the inner side basal to middle angularly widened, pair of anterior sclerites longer than penis, almost reaching apex, very narrow in apical half, at base with distinct pair clusters of spinules. Igorius tristis sp. n. differs in having a wider body, the width of the elytral base is much narrower than the distance between tubercles at the apical elytral margin.

A new species, Macrotarrhus dudkoi Legalov, sp. nov. from Hisar Range (Uzbekistan: Surxondaryo Region) is described and illustrated. This new species is similar to M. bartelsii (Boheman, 1842) but differs in the dense brown scales on the elytra, a weak middle carina on the rostrum, and wider aedeagus that is slightly narrower towards the apex. It is distinguish from M. (M.) conspersus (Petri, 1901) in the rostrum with middle carina, the elytra covered with brown scales, narrower second tarsomere of the protarsi and a wide aedeagus narrowed towards the apex. A new species, Eremochorus fomichevi Legalov, sp. nov. from Almaty Region is described and illustrated. The new species is close to E. varius (Boheman, 1842) but differs in the longer setae on the body, smaller body size and narrower apex of the aedeagus. A new species, Archaeosciaphilus gyrommatus n. sp. of the subfamily Entiminae, is described from Baltic amber. The new species is similar to A. marshalli but differs in the smaller body sizes, the scape reaching middle of the eye, narrower decumbent elytral scales, weakly convex elytral interstriae and tarsal claws equal in length. The genus Archaeosciaphilus , n. placem. is transferred from the tribe Sciaphilini to the tribe Polydrusini. A list of species from the subfamily Entiminae described from Baltic amber is given. The Cape Floristic Region in the Republic of South Africa is a well‐recognized hotspot of biodiversity. Although this region is mostly known for its high level of plant diversity and endemicity, it also hosts an understudied and likely diverse arthropod fauna. Here we investigate the evolutionary history and timing of diversification of the apterous weevil genus Phlyctinus (Curculionidae: Entiminae), which is endemic to the coastal area and adjacent mountain ranges of the Cape floristic region and generally associated with sunflower plants (Asteraceae). We use a diverse array of molecular analyses (phylogenetic inference, molecular species delimitation and dating analyses) to analyse a novel molecular dataset of 202 weevil specimens (including 170 Phlyctinus sampled in 60 sites), and sequenced for two mitochondrial and four nuclear gene fragments. Phylogenetic and dating analyses indicate that the genus started diversifying in the late Miocene, with contrasting diversification dynamics for the three inferred clades, which present disjunct distributions. Host plant records and the lack of relatedness of species living in sympatry indicate that the diversification of Phlyctinus was predominantly driven by allopatric (geographic) speciation. We hypothesize that the interplay between topography and recurring cycles of coastline‐habitat fragmentation resulting from sea level oscillations spurred the diversification of the most speciose clade, whereas in the two remaining clades populations likely remained connected thus hampering allopatric speciation. Interestingly, this pattern echoes with the role of sea level oscillations as an important driver of the radiation of several lineages in the coastline ecosystems of the Cape Floristic Region. From the modern distribution of the tribes Anypotactini and Eudiagogini (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), it can be assumed that the climate of the late Eocene amber forests was similar to that of the Valdivian temperate forests. A new species, Paonaupactus zosimovichi sp. n. from the tribe Anypotactini of the subfamily Entiminae is described from Late Eocene Rovno amber. It differs from Paonaupactus gracilis by its rarer, decumbent scales on the elytral interstriae, elytral interstriae, which are clearly visible between scales, and its smaller body size. A key to 10 genera of the Asiatic Blosyrini is given. A new genus, Blosyromimusgen. n. (Entiminae, Blosyrini) with 3 new subgenera (Blosyromimussubgen. n.,Eublosyromimussubgen. n., and Nanoblosyrussubgen. n.), is described from China. The new genus is characterized by the following features: the pronotum is widest somewhat distal to the middle, compressed laterally in the basal half, with numerous granules and with a distinct median carina on the disc; the sides of the elytra are beveled at the base, rarely somewhat rounded; the fore tibia of the male is not widened at the apex, the inner margin of the middle tibia is straight, not concave, with spines similar to those on the fore and hind tibiae; ventrite 5 of the male is with or without a shallow depression; apical margin of the ventrite is weakly excised so that, in ventral view, the outline of the abdominal apex is medially produced by the inner (dorsal) surface of the ventrite; the lamella of the penis is triangular or trapezoidal; the armament of the endophallus includes a pair of anterior sclerites and a pair of endophallic rods, without an unpaired median postostial grater, a pair of posterior sclerites, and paired clusters of spinules. Dactylotinomorphus Davidian, gen. n. (Dactylotus egenus Faust, 1887, type species) is described from China. Kamius Korotyaev, 1996, stat. n., Nipponoblosyrus Korotyaev, 1996, stat. n. and Dactylotinus Korotyaev, 1996, stat. n. are increased from a subgenus to a genus rank. A key to the genera Dactylotus Schoenherr, 1847, Kamius, Nipponoblosyrus, Dactylotinus and Dactylotinomorphus gen. n. with brief morphological characteristic is given. The new genus is closely related to Dactylotinus, from which it differs in the following features: pronotum broadest somewhat distad to the middle, as a rule without constriction near of basal margin; armament of endophallus without of unpaired median postostial grater and pair clusters of spinules; collum of spermatheca distinctly divided on broad oval postcollum and narrow antecollum; coxite-stylus approximately as wide as long. Polyphagous broad nosed weevils (Curculionidae: Entiminae) constitute a large and taxonomically challenging subfamily that contains economically significant agricultural pests worldwide. South Africa is a hot-spot for biodiversity and several species of indigenous and endemic genera of Entiminae have shifted on to cultivated plants, with some being phytosanitary pests. The sporadic pest status of many species (where the species has an occasional economic impact on the agricultural industry, but is not encountered often enough that is is readily recognisable by researchers and agricultural extension workers) and the presence of pest complexes and cryptic species represent an identification challenge to non-specialists. Furthermore, no comprehensive identification tools exist to identify immature stages that may be found in crops/soil. In this paper, a curated barcoding database with 70 COI sequences from 41 species (39 Entiminae, 2 Cyclominae) is initiated, to assist with the complexity of identification of species in this group.

Simple Summary: Over 12,000 species of the subfamily Entiminae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) have been described worldwide, but there has yet to be realization of the potential for DNA barcodes to assist in species-level identification. Here, we analyzed the variation in intra- and interspecific genetic distance of 621 public- and 27 self-determined sequences, to determine parameters for species identification of Entiminae. Our study found no universal barcoding gap at the subfamily level, although a genetic distance threshold of 9.18% can delimit more than 88% of Entiminae species. We also inferred additional empirical threshold values for 14 genera (species > 2) that can delimit congeneric species. The subfamily Entiminae is the largest group in the family Curculionidae, and it has long represented a challenge in traditional and molecular classification. Here, we analyzed intra- and interspecific genetic distances of 621 public COI barcode sequences (658bp) from 39 genera and 110 species of Entiminae, to determine parameters most congruent in retaining established species. We found that the mean intraspecific genetic distance (3.07%) was much smaller than the mean interspecific one (21.96%), but there is a wide range of overlap between intra- and interspecific genetic distances (0.77–18.01%), indicating that there is no consistent, universal barcoding gap. Specifically, DNA barcoding gap analysis for morphospecies revealed that 102 of 110 morphospecies had barcoding gaps, and 9.18% was the optimum threshold of genetic distances for 97 species delimitation. We further confirmed this threshold with barcodes from 27 morphologically identified specimens (including 21 newly reported barcodes) sequenced from five genera and seven species. We also identified thresholds to delimit congeneric species within 14 selected genera (species > 2), which varied from 7.42% (Trichalophus) to 13.48% (Barypeithes). We herein present optimal parameters for species identification in the Entiminae. Our study suggests that despite no universal genetic distance threshold value in subfamily Entiminae, 9.18% is optimal for most species. We recommend a wider sampling of geographic populations to better account for intraspecific distance variation, and that genetic distance thresholds for species delimitation should be refined at the genus level. A new genus Oxymorus Borovec & Meregalli gen. n., belonging to the tribe Oosomini Lacordaire, 1863 of the curculionid subfamily Entiminae, is described. It includes nine new species, all from South Africa: Oxymorus uitkyk sp. n., type species, O. antennalis sp. n., O. johnprinei sp. n., O. minor sp. n., O. obesus sp. n., O. oculatus sp. n., O. rikae sp. n., O. strictifrons sp. n. and O. sulcaticollis sp. n. All species are illustrated and keyed.

A brief morphological characteristic of the subgenus Otismotilus Reitter, 1912 is given. Otiorhynchus paradigitalis sp. n. is described from Zekari Pass in Georgia. Diagnosis of a new species: the species belongs to the species-subgroup with thickened antennae (O. digitalis, O. depressus, O. oezbeki and O. kataevi) in the species-group granulatopunctatus. Otiorhynchus paradigitalis sp. n. is most similar to O. digitalis, from which it differs by the slightly shorter epistomal angles of females, weakly transverse 3rd funicular segment, oval-shaped elytra widely rounded apically, shorter setae on elytral intervals, shorter manubrium of spiculum ventrale, closely located (almost touching each other) ramus and collum of the spermatheca and slightly smaller stylus on coxites. The new species is also similar to O. oezbeki by the horn-like elongate male epistomal angles, almost reaching the mandibular apex and also by the form of elytra with straight or slightly concave sides before the base; O. paradigitalis sp. n. differs from the mentioned species by the weakly convex disc of pronotum, more elongate 2nd funicular segment, right outer apical angle of the fore tibia and distinctly widened from the outside corbel of the hind tibia. A key to six species of the quadratopunctatus species-group of the subgenus Otismotilus with thickened antennae is given.

It differs from Dactylotinus in the following features: the pronotum is widest somewhat distal to the middle, compressed laterally in the basal half, with numerous granules and distinct median carina on the disc; the humeri are slanting, rarely rounded; the male fore tibia is not widened at the apex; the inner margin of the middle tibia is not concave, with spines similar to those on the fore and hind tibiae; the armament of the endophallus usually has no unpaired median postostial grater (MPG) and a pair of spinule clusters (PCS). Five new species are described: Eudactylotinus shangrilensissp. n. (type species), Eu. muliensissp. n.,Eu. premucronatussp. n.,Eu. silvestrissp. n., and Eu. squamulatussp. n. A new genus, Coniophloeus gen. n., is described for five species of South African weevils known from the Western and Eastern Cape and assigned to the tribe Embrithini Marshall, 1942: Coniophloeus squalidus (Boheman, 1842) comb. n. (type species, transferred from the genus Trachyphloeus Germar, 1817 and tribe Trachyphloeini Lacordaire, 1863), C. alternans sp. n., C. oberprieleri sp. n., C. robustus sp. n. and C. obrieni sp. n. Despite discoveries of new species of Metapocyrtus Heller, 1912 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in Mindanao Island, Philippines, over the past few years, there are still many unknown species inhabiting unprotected and unexplored forest and mountain ecosystems. A recent survey of Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary revealed two new species of the genus. Phlyctinus callosus (Schoenherr, 1826) (Curculionidae, Entiminae, Oosomini) is a species native to the Western Cape province of the Republic of South Africa. It is regarded as a key pest of orchards and vineyards. Detailed observations of its morphology and ecology have shown this species to be a complex of closely related species. In this study we describe the species of this complex, provide morphological and molecular diagnostic tools to distinguish between species, and review their distribution and host plant associations. In all, six species are recognized in the P. callosus complex and five are described as new (P. grootbosensis Haran sp. nov., P. xerophilus Haran sp. nov., P. planithorax Haran sp. nov., P. littoralis Haran sp. nov., P. aloevorus Haran sp. nov.). Sequences of the mitochondrial gene used (cytochrome oxidase I, COI) indicated that P. xerophilus Haran sp. nov. might comprise several cryptic species for which stable morphological features could not be identified at this stage. The species of the genus Phlyctinus appear to be primarily associated with various Asteraceae found in humid, sandy and disturbed habitats.

The subfamily Entiminae is the largest group in the family Curculionidae, and it has long represented a challenge in traditional and molecular classification. Here, we analyzed intra- and interspecific genetic distances of 621 public COI barcode sequences (658bp) from 39 genera and 110 species of Entiminae, to determine parameters most congruent in retaining established species. We found that the mean intraspecific genetic distance (3.07%) was much smaller than the mean interspecific one (21.96%), but there is a wide range of overlap between intra- and interspecific genetic distances (0.77–18.01%), indicating that there is no consistent, universal barcoding gap. Specifically, DNA barcoding gap analysis for morphospecies revealed that 102 of 110 morphospecies had barcoding gaps, and 9.18% was the optimum threshold of genetic distances for 97 species delimitation. We further confirmed this threshold with barcodes from 27 morphologically identified specimens (including 21 newly reported barcodes) sequenced from five genera and seven species. We also identified thresholds to delimit congeneric species within 14 selected genera (species > 2), which varied from 7.42% (Trichalophus) to 13.48% (Barypeithes). We herein present optimal parameters for species identification in the Entiminae. Our study suggests that despite no universal genetic distance threshold value in subfamily Entiminae, 9.18% is optimal for most species. We recommend a wider sampling of geographic populations to better account for intraspecific distance variation, and that genetic distance thresholds for species delimitation should be refined at the genus level.

A new genus, Afromuelleria gen. n., assigned to the tribe Trachyphloeini Lacordaire, 1863, is described for four South African species of weevils: A. awelani sp. n., A. baobab sp. n., A. limpopo sp. n. and A. venda sp. n. All species are illustrated and keyed. Taxonomic status of the new genus is discussed and compared with similar genera of Trachyphloeini and Embrithini Marshall, 1942.

A new genus Oxymorus Borovec & Meregalli gen. n., belonging to the tribe Oosomini Lacordaire, 1863 of the curculionid subfamily Entiminae, is described. Brief morphological characteristics of the genera Blosyrus Schoenherr, 1823, Blosyrodes Jekel, 1875, and Blosyridius Fairmaire, 1891 are given. The new genus Stiltoblosyrusgen. n. (type species S. belousovisp. n.) with 17 new species is described from Yunnan and Sichuan provinces of China. Stiltoblosyrus gen. n. is closely related to Blosyrodes but differs in the tuberculate pronotum and elytra, in the presence of an elongate process of the apex of the male hind tibia, in the armament of the endophallus consisting of tiny spicules, and in the usually hair-like vestiture of the body. The new genus includes S. andreiisp. n., S. asyaesp. n., S. belousovisp. n. (type species), S. brevicornissp. n., S. curvimanussp. n., S. delavayisp. n.,S. fairmaireisp. n., S. gracilissp. n., S. laticollissp. n., S. kabakisp. n., S. khalidisp. n., S. lisusp. n., S. longipessp. n.,S. pulchersp. n., S. titanicussp. n., S. vulgarissp. n., and S. zhangisp. n. The alfalfa root weevil Sitona discoideus Gyllenhal 1834 (Curculionidae: Entiminae) is herein reported for the first time for Argentina. This weevil is native to southern Europe and northern Africa and was accidentally introduced in Australia, New Zealand, the United States of America, and Chile. The mature larva and pupa of Graptus triguttatus triguttatus and the mature larva of Peritelus sphaeroides are described for the first time. The larvae of Philopedon plagiatum and Tanymecus palliatus are re-described. Five larval instars were determined in Tanymecus, thereby correcting doubtful data in the literature. The relationship between larval growth, number of larval instars, head width of the mature larva, and the adult weevil is explained using the example of Tanymecus. The nearly constant ratio of subsequent larval instars in head width ratio, termed "growth factor" and derived from Dyar's ratio, is used for the determination of larval instars. [according to] source) and region connection calculus-5 (RCC–5) articulations and alignments. Prior to this study, the broad-nosed weevil genus Minyomerus Horn, 1876 sec. Jansen & Franz, 2015 (Curculionidae [non-focal]: Entiminae [non-focal]: Tanymecini [non-focal]) contained 17 species distributed throughout the desert and plains regions of North America. In this review of Minyomerus sec. Jansen & Franz, 2018, we describe the following four species as new to science: Minyomerus ampullaceus sec. Jansen & Franz, 2018 (henceforth: [JF2018]), new species, Minyomerus franko [JF2018], new species, Minyomerus sculptilis [JF2018], new species, and Minyomerus tylotos [JF2018], new species. The four new species are added to, and integrated with, the preceding revision, and an updated key and phylogeny of Minyomerus [JF2018] are presented. A cladistic analysis using 52 morphological characters of 26 terminal taxa (5/21 outgroup/ingroup) yielded a single most-parsimonious cladogram (Length = 99 steps, consistency index = 60, retention index = 80). The analysis reaffirms the monophyly of Minyomerus [JF2018] with eight unreversed synapomorphies. The species-group placements, possible biogeographic origins, and natural history of the new species are discussed in detail.
