The artworks 1001st Island--The Most Sustainable Island in Archipelago (2015-16) by Tita Salina and Dewa Murka (2016) by Teja Astawa are compared as a means to provide insight into ways artists have been interrogating recent urban discourse in Indonesian contemporary art. This article engages with the critical vocabulary proposed by urban historian Abidin Kusno, which analyses green discourse in the changing Indonesian urban landscapes of the post-Suharto era, and explores how these two artworks reflect Kusno's analysis. Salina's multi-media installation and Astawa's painting address two land reclamation projects in areas that have faced rapid urbanisation: Jakarta and Bali. The artworks evoke questions about tradition, spirituality, environmental sustainability and socioeconomic inequality. The artworks are formally and contextually analysed before being compared and evaluated in relation to Indonesian urban history and discourse. Both artists reflect Kusno's critical analysis of green discourse in Indonesia. Salina's work shares parallels with the tools applied by the government in Jakarta, as her artistic practice similarly requires communities to participate in its creation. Meanwhile, Astawa's work mostly reflects the narrative of green discourse. Theoretical and empirical triangulations are used to clarify the nature of social capital and the ways in which gender affects trust and co-operation.

This article is a comparative case study of environmental regulation in Canada and the United States, focussing on one important area of environmental regulation, pesticides, and on the treatment of North America's most commercially important pesticide, alachlor. Alachlor is a clear case of policy divergence: Canadians have banned the substance while the US has decided to keep it on the market with minimal restrictions. Three major explanations for the divergence are explored: science, interest group politics, and legal and institutional arrangements. The article concludes that while different interpretation of the risks posed by alachlor contributed to the different decisions, they can only be explained with reference to the economic importance of alachlor and the need to maintain the legitimacy of current institutional arrangements. The concluding section outlines a framework for explaining similarities and differences in environmental, health and safety regulations across nations. Il se concentre sur un important domaine de cette reglementation, notamment sur celle des pesticides, et sur les mesures prises par chaque nation contre alachlor, l'un des plus importants pesticides sur le marche nord-american. Alachlor nous offre un exemple manifeste de desaccord politique: les Canadiens ont interdit la circulation de ce produit alors que les Americans ont decide de le laisser sur le marche tout en y imposant quelques restrictions minimes. L'article analyse trois types d'explication de ces divergences: l'exploitation scientifique, l'exploitation par le jeu des groupes d'interet, et l'exploitation par la loi et les institutions. L'article conclut que si meme des interpretations differentes des risques poses par alachlor ont contribue a ces divergences, on ne saurait les expliquer convenablement que si ces divergences sont analysees dans le contexte politique le plus large, contexte dont tiennent compte l'importance economique d'alachlor et le besoin de maintenir la legitimite des organisations institutionnelles impliquees. Se basant sur le cas d'alachlor, I article esquisse un cadre d'analyse pouvant expliquer an niveau international les ressemblances et les differences dans la reglementation de l'environnement, de la sante et du bien-etre, et des mesures de securite.

A comparative analysis of the five tools used as environmental indicators in the agricultural practices in France is presented.

A comparison is made using SEQ-Eau and the methodology currently being discussed in Europe, to develop environmental quality standards for French freshwaters, showing that the European approach is more conservative . Byline: S.H. Yeo, W.M. Ang This paper explores the desirable relationship between business strategy and environmental strategy on both a product line and process line basis. The work uses the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to do a pair-wise comparison between business and environmental benefits and importance. Subsequently, the Product Profile Matrix is used to conceptualise the findings generated from the AHP and hence evaluating the product's/process standing in terms of the two important factors. This paper also demonstrates how such results help to facilitate the development of appropriate business and environmental strategies and hence to create a successful shift into a more desirable market position.

Previous forest management practices in U. S. Forests emphasized the suppression fires. A consequence of this management practice has been the excessive accumulation of fuel and high tree densities. In order to avoid severe and catastrophic fires, resource managers now employ a variety of treatments to diminish fuel loads. Alternative treatments include prescribed burns and thinning, both of which are assumed to mimic natural ecosystem function. However, avian responses to alternative silviculture treatments have only recently been investigated. We present the results of a study designed to ascertain whether avian community composition, productivity and foraging behavior are affected by fire and fire surrogate treatments. Avian species composition and abundance in each of four treatment types was estimated using point count census methods. The treatment plots were control, burn, thin, and burn + thin. The treatments were replicated in three different sites. We also determined differences in foraging behavior. Avian censuses were conducted a year before the treatments to obtain baseline data, and four years post-treatment. Our results represent acute and relatively long-term responses to forest disturbance. We compared community composition and foraging behavior using data from the baseline samples to determine whether species composition and community organization was homogeneous among the treatments. Species composition was significantly different among treatments, with highest diversity occuring in thin and burn plots. However, there was considerable heterogeneity in the data. There was evidence of species specific differences in foraging behavior across treatments. We document how species composition and niche organization shifts in response to the thin and burn treatments.
