Surface flashover that occurs on the surface of epoxy resin (EP) is one of the main causes of insulation failure in the power system. The newly emerging polar groups on the surface are highly desirable for enhancing the surface flashover performance of EP. Here, we present a facile ultraviolet (UV) irradiation method to enable the controlled introduction of C–OH and C = O groups on the EP surface. The resultant UV-irradiated EPs (UV-EPs) are highly uniform with little variation in surface roughness while exhibiting tunable polar content with the irradiation time. We also present the first systematic investigation into the effect of UV irradiation time on the surface flashover voltage of UV-EPs, with a maximum increase of 23.07% compared to the pristine EP. Mechanistic studies suggest that the enhancement of the surface flashover voltage is mainly dominated by the density of the deep trap, which is strongly dependent on the UV-induced C–OH and C = O groups on the surface. Besides that, the UV-EPs also display long-term stability due to the stable presence of polar groups, which further demonstrates the feasibility of this method for the development of EP with excellent properties. Alternating current (AC) loss measurement is crucial for the theoretical evaluation and optimization in the fabrication of superconducting AC devices. Lock-in amplifier based on the lock-in phase is commonly adopted and inevitably involves with phase error. In this work, a novel approach for measuring transport AC loss by determining the minimum compensated voltage (MCV) was developed, in which the lock-in amplifier was removed. Since it just uses the voltage signal from an AC voltmeter, it is phase-error immune. Experimental results demonstrated that when using the lock-in amplifier, there existed a system error as the initial phase difference between the sampled (reference) and real current phases, which required careful compensation. In contrast, the phase error no longer needed to be considered by the MCV method, and the AC loss results were obtained much more conveniently with the relative error between the theoretical and the experimental of less than 5%. Finally, the AC loss of a coated conductor spiral wound on an epoxy bar was obtained using the presented approach, demonstrating its low cost, ease of operation, and high accuracy. Packaging insulation materials with high thermal conductivity and excellent dielectric properties are favorable to meet the high demand and rapid development of third generation power semiconductors. In this study, we propose to improve the thermal conductivity of epoxy resin (EP) by incorporating a three-dimensional boron nitride thermally conductive network. Detailedly, polyurethane foam (PU) was used as a supporter, and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were loaded onto the PU supporter through chemical bonding (BNNS@PU). After immersing BNNS@PU into the EP resin, EP-based thermally conductive composites were prepared by vacuum-assisted impregnation. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscope were used to characterize the chemical bonding and morphological structure of BNNS@PU, respectively. The content of BNNS in BNNS@PU/EP composites was quantitatively analyzed by TGA. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the BNNS@PU/EP composites reaches 0.521 W/m K with an enhancement rate η of 30.89 at an ultra-low BNNS filler content (5.93 wt. %). Additionally, the BNNS@PU/EP composites have excellent dielectric properties with the frequency range from 101 to 106 Hz. In order to prepare highly heat-resistant packaging insulation materials, in this paper, bismaleimide/epoxy resin (BMI/EP55) composites with different contents of BMI were prepared by melt blending BMI into amino tetrafunctional and phenolic epoxy resin (at a ratio of 5:5). The microstructures and thermal and electrical properties of the composites were tested. The electrostatic potential distribution, energy level distribution, and molecular orbitals of BMI were calculated using Gaussian. The results showed that the carbonyl group in BMI is highly electronegative, implying that the carbonyl group has a strong electron trapping ability. The thermal decomposition temperature of the composites gradually increased with the increase of BMI content, and the 20% BMI/EP55 composites had the highest heat-resistance index, along with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of >250 °C. At different test temperatures, with increase in the BMI content, the conductivity of epoxy resin composites showed a tendency to first decrease and then increase, the breakdown field strength showed a tendency to first increase and then decrease, and the dielectric constant was gradually decreased. Two trap centers were present simultaneously in the composites, where the shallow trap energy level is the deepest in 20% BMI/EP composites and the deep trap energy level is the deepest in 10% BMI/EP55 composites. Correspondingly, the 10% BMI/EP55 composite had a slower charge decay rate, while the 20% BMI/EP55 had a faster charge decay rate. In summary, the BMI/EP55 composites with high heat resistance and insulating properties were prepared in this study, which provided ideas for preparing high-temperature packaging insulating materials. We outline a coarse-grained model of epoxy resins (bisphenol-F-diglycidyl-ether/3,5-diethyltoluene-2,4-diamine) to describe elastic and plastic deformation, cavitation, and fracture at the μm scale. For this, molecular scale simulation data collected from quantum and molecular mechanics studies are coarsened into an effective interaction potential featuring a single type of beads that mimic 100 nm scale building blocks of the material. Our model allows bridging the time–length scale problem toward experimental tensile testing, thus effectively reproducing the deformation and fracture characteristics observed for strain rates of 10−1 to 10−5 s−1. This paves the way to analyzing viscoelastic deformation, plastic behavior, and yielding characteristics by means of "post-atomistic" simulation models that retain the molecular mechanics of the underlying epoxy resin at length scales of 0.1–10 µm. The damage mechanism and exposure tolerance of epoxy resins to fast electrons remain unclear. We quantitatively investigated the effects of electron irradiation on a common epoxy resin by dose-dependent electron energy loss spectroscopy. The results show that sp3 states of nitrogen, oxygen, and their adjacent carbon atoms were converted to sp2 states, forming imine (C=N) and carbonyl (C=O) as the total electron dose increased. The sp3 to sp2 conversion mechanism was proposed. The epoxy resin was very sensitive to fast electrons and the original electronic states were maintained up to a total dose of ∼103e− nm−2 at a low temperature of 103 K. Undesired ice accumulation can lead to serious negative impacts on daily life and equipment safety. Slippery liquid-infused surfaces (SLISs) have been widely studied for their low ice adhesion strength (τ ice ). However, the lack of durability, weak robustness, and complex preparation process hinder the application of SLISs. In this work, robust oil-infused porous surface (RIPS) was obtained by a facile one-step method, which used epoxy resin (E44) as a substrate and contained fumed silica and silicone oil. The RIPS-6 displays outstanding anti-icing/deicing ability, superior liquid repellency, good self-cleaning performance, and excellent mechanical robustness. At −5 °C, the water droplet remained unfrozen after 7200 s. τ ice was only 6.9 kPa at −20 °C and remained below 15 kPa during 10 icing cycles. Furthermore, the mixture of E44 and fumed silica enhanced the mechanical properties including the hardness (4 H) and abrasion resistance of RIPS-6. The icephobicity can be remained (τice < 40 kPa) even after 150 cycles of sandpaper abrasion at 2.5 kPa. The anti-icing and deicing coating with excellent mechanical stability and durability significantly improves the practical application possibility of the coating in harsh environments. As a by-product of solar panel production, photovoltaic silicon waste (PSW) is becoming a threat to the environment and human health. The classical resource recycling approaches are separating Si and SiC from PSW, most of which is costly and inefficient. In this study, the PSW acted as a silicon source was directly translated into a vertically oriented 3D Si 3 N 4 –SiC skeleton with ice-templating and in situ nitriding technology. The Si 3 N 4 –SiC/epoxy (EP) composites were successfully produced by the following vacuum epoxy infusion. Composite with 55.46 wt% filler content had the maximum thermal conductivity (TC) of 1.717 W/(m·K), 950 % higher than pure epoxy. The composite substrates showed excellent heat dissipation performance in practical applications due to their high TC, primarily attributed to the directional arrangement of ceramic powders in the Si 3 N 4 –SiC skeleton. Additionally, the Si 3 N 4 whiskers produced in situ promoted the formation of wider continuous phonon heat transfer channels. In short, we proposed a simple and feasible approach for recycling PSW to fabricate high-value heat-conducting composites, which expands a new direction of industrial waste secondary recycling and is of great importance for the clean utilization of the resource. To interpret the diffusion behavior of oxygen in epoxy asphalt with different cross‐linking degrees, epoxy asphalt‐oxygen diffusion layer models were constructed. The effect of temperature on oxygen diffusion and the number of oxygen molecules penetrating the epoxy asphalt was quantitatively analyzed. Fick's second law was used to determine the oxygen diffusion coefficient. The Mean square displacement (MSD) was extracted to analyze the effect of cross‐linking degree on the molecular motion of the base asphalt. The results show that as the cross‐linking degree increases, the number of oxygen in the epoxy asphalt decreases, accompanied by a reduction in the oxygen diffusion coefficient. Temperature significantly affects the rate of oxygen diffusion, with higher temperatures leading to greater diffusion depths over the same simulation time. The oxygen diffusion coefficient of epoxy asphalt ranges from 4.60 × 10−11 to 2.20 × 10−10 m2/s at temperatures of 298–373 K. The epoxy system markedly restricts the movement of base asphalt molecules, with saturate being most affected by cross‐linking degree and asphaltene the least. A high cross‐linking network impedes the asphalt‐oxygen contact oxidation, enhancing epoxy asphalt's anti‐aging capacity. [Display omitted] Electroactive coatings for smart wearable textiles based on a furan bio-epoxy monomer (BOMF) crosslinked with isophorone diamine (IPD) and additivated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are reported herein. The effect of BOMF/IPD molar ratio on the curing reaction, as well as on the properties of the crosslinked resins was first assessed, and it was found that 1.5:1 BOMF/IPD molar ratio provided higher heat of reaction, glass transition temperature, and mechanical performance. The resin was then modified with CNT to prepare electrically conductive nanocomposite films, which exhibited conductivity values increased by eight orders of magnitude upon addition of 5 phr of CNTs. The epoxy/CNT nanocomposites were finally applied as coatings onto a cotton fabric to develop electrically conductive, hydrophobic and breathable textiles. Notably, the integration of CNTs imparted efficient and reversible electrothermal behavior to the cotton fabric, showcasing its potential application in smart and comfortable wearable electronic devices. A low viscosity tetra‐functional cyclosiloxane epoxy resins (TGTS) is synthesized via a one‐step hydrosilylation reaction and cured separately with four different aromatic diamines to explore the reaction kinetics, network development, and thermal resistance. The hardeners used are 1,3‐phenylenediamine (PDA), diethyl toluene diamine (DETDA), 4,4‐diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM), and 1,3‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy) benzene, because of their availability and aromaticity. During cure with TGTS they all display autocatalytic behavior, but when compared to a traditional organic epoxy resin, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) cured with DDM however, the rate constants are about 3 times slower and less exothermic. The DETDA hardener in particular exhibits significantly slower rates of cure when compared to the other amines, being about an order of magnitude slower compared to the PDA curative. This is attributed to higher steric hindrance, compounded by reduced miscibility. The TGTS‐DDM carbon fiber composite displays the most thermal resistance after extended exposure to 220°C, producing the least mass loss and after combustion of about 12% compared to 20% for the DGEBA cured with DDM. The results presented here, illustrate that a tetrafunctional cyclic siloxane epoxy resin, can exhibit excellent processability, evidenced by very low viscosities and long gelation times, whilst also displaying excellent thermal resistance, whether at elevated temperature, or during combustion. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA), a key intermediate for epoxy resins, provides strong adhesion, processability and the resulting thermoset boasts high cross linking density. However, the inherent brittleness and susceptibility to cracking restrict its advanced applications. To overcome these drawbacks, CO2 fixed cyclic carbonate from castor oil (CCO) was synthesized from epoxidised castor oil (ECO) and used in varying quantities as a toughening agent for amine cured DGEBA. Different amines have been utilized to cure the epoxy and to study the structure–property relationship by fixing the amount of CCO. The inclusion of 10% CCO resulted in improvement in the tensile strength, storage modulus, flexural modulus, and impact strength of the epoxy‐urethane hybrid. Moreover, the epoxy‐urethane networks had reduced cross linking density imparted by the fatty acid units of CCO and the presence of unreacted carbonate groups facilitated molecular movement, thereby contributing to energy dissipation during the deformation process. Further incorporation of the CCO lowers the mechanical properties of the hybrids due to a reduction in cross linking density. Trimethylolpropane tris[poly(propyleneglycol)amine terminated] ether cured system exhibited the highest thermal stability compared to hexamethylene diamine, isophorone diamine, and 4,7,10‐trioxa‐1,13 tridecanediamine. The degradation and recycling of waste epoxy resins is an urgent environmental problem, encouraging the use of degradable thermosetting epoxies. In this study, a high-performance thermosetting epoxy resin material that can be easily degraded and recycled was prepared using a low-viscosity and high-activity epoxy monomer, tetrahydrophthalic acid diglycidyl ester. Owing to the breakable ester bond in this epoxy monomer, the thermosetting three-dimensional epoxy cross-linked structure can be rapidly degraded using ethylene glycol at atmospheric pressure. After further depolymerization of the epoxy resin/glycol solution with NaOH, sodium cyclohexene-2-carboxylate was obtained. The sodium salt was acidified, epoxidized, and then re-prepared to obtain the epoxy monomer diglycidyl tetrahydrophthalate. The recycled epoxy monomer possesses the same thermal and mechanical properties as the original epoxy monomer, thus realizing the economic and environmentally friendly degradation and recycling of the thermosetting epoxy resin under mild conditions, and this recycling method is applicable to epoxy systems with ester bonding in the cured material. Aim: The osteogenic potential of new premixed calcium‐silicate‐containing bioceramic sealers (Ca‐Si sealers) was tested with porcine vascular wall‐mesenchymal stem cells (pVW‐MSCs). Methodology: Two Ca‐Si‐containing sealers: Ceraseal (MetaBiomed, Cheong‐si, South Korea) and AH Plus Bioceramic (Maruchi, Wonju‐si, South Korea), and an epoxy resin sealer (AH Plus; Dentsply, Konstanz, Germany) as a control, were prepared according to the manufacturers' indications. All samples were allowed to set for 100% of their setting time in a sterile humid cabinet at 37°C and 95% relative humidity. pVW‐MSC seeding efficiency and osteogenic differentiation were analysed as marker of gene/protein expression for up to 12 days. Mineralization assay and immunofluorescence staining were performed and evaluated over a period of 21 days. Statistical analyses were conducted using one‐way analysis of variance (p <.05). Additional samples were prepared and stored under the same conditions and inspected using an environmental scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy system. Results: Significantly higher cell seeding efficiency (p <.05) was observed for both Ca‐Si sealers from day 8. pVW‐MSCs showed a significant shift towards the osteogenic lineage only when seeded in contact with Ca‐Si sealers. Gene expression of osteopontin was upregulated significantly. Collagen I and osteocalcin were clearly expressed by cells in contact with Ca‐Si sealers. Mineralization granules were observed in Alizarin red assays and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis of both Ca‐Si sealers. No gene expression or granule mineralization were observed on the epoxy resin sealer. Conclusions: Premixed Ca‐Si sealers displayed a higher potential for osteogenic activity on pVW‐MSCs. Epoxy resin sealer was unable to induce any osteogenic activity. The properties of both Ca‐Si sealers suggest their potential as osteoinductive platforms for vascular MSCs in periapical bone. This study aims to analyze the degradation behavior and mechanisms of amine-cured epoxy asphalt (EA) under the combined effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, oxygen, and temperature. To achieve this, amine-cured epoxy resin (ER) and EAs containing 35%, 45%, and 55% asphalt content were prepared and subjected to simulated UV-based aging. Various analytical techniques were employed to investigate the mechanical properties, microstructure, morphology, and oxidation layer of ER and EAs. The results indicate that after UV-based aging, ER and EAs with 35%–45% asphalt content experienced an increase in mass, a decrease in strength and glass transition temperature. In comparison, EAs with 55% asphalt content exhibited the opposite trends. The elongation and (Tanδ)max of ER and EAs reduced, whereas the storage modulus and hardness at mid to high temperatures rose. At the microstructural level, the degradation of the resin phase was confirmed by changes in ether, ester, and amide groups, whereas the generation of sulfoxide groups was associated with the oxidation of the asphalt phase. Compared with ER, the surface of EA has obvious defects after aging, which is the main reason for the decrease in contact angle. As the asphalt content increases, EAs exhibit higher carbonyl concentration, more profound oxidation, and more obvious performance degradation. The elastic, plastic, and in-plane damage evolutions of a carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy composite fabricated via filament winding were studied based on continuum damage mechanics. The specific voids and resin-rich region distributions depended on the material and manufacturing conditions. The damage evolutions were expressed by a unified curve, indicating that the continuum damage mechanics approach gave a robust prediction of the damage evolution, although the critical damage at the ultimate failure depended on the material and manufacturing conditions. The damage coupling parameters were also affected by these conditions, which changed the damage evolution behavior under simultaneous shear and transverse damage development situations. In this letter, we present interfacial fracture toughness data for a polymer-metal interface where tests were conducted at various test temperatures T and loading rates δ ˙ . An adhesively bonded asymmetric double cantilever beam (ADCB) specimen was utilized to measure toughness. ADCB specimens were created by bonding a thinner, upper adherend to a thicker, lower adherend (both 6061 T6 aluminum) using a thin layer of epoxy adhesive, such that the crack propagated along the interface between the thinner adherend and the epoxy layer. The specimens were tested at T from 25 to 65 °C and δ ˙ from 0.002 to 0.2 mm/s. The measured interfacial toughness Γ increased as both T and δ ˙ increased. For an ADCB specimen loaded at a constant δ ˙ , the energy release rate G increases as the crack length a increases. For this reason, we defined rate effects in terms of the rate of change in the energy release rate G ˙ . Although not rigorously correct, a formal application of time–temperature superposition (TTS) analysis to the Γ data provided useful insights on the observed dependencies. In the TTS-shifted data, Γ decreased and then increased for monotonically increasing G ˙ . Thus, the TTS analysis suggests that there is a minimum value of Γ. This minimum value could be used to define a lower bound in Γ when designing critical engineering applications that are subjected to T and δ ˙ excursions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three-dimensional (3D) auxetic woven fabrics and associated composites pose great potential in various industrial sectors, mainly in aerospace and automotive applications. Auxetic effect induces unique properties for smart applications due to its negative Poisson ratio. To date, composites based on different multilayer 3D woven auxetic shapes are not reported for structural applications. Considering this, different auxetic geometries were fabricated via on-loom stitching, and the mechanical properties of their composites were studied. Cotton (warp) and jute (weft) yarns were used to fabricate multi-layer geometries of auxetic arrowhead, rotating square, re-entrant honeycomb, and connected parallelogram geometry on a sample weaving loom. These basic geometries were filled with auxetic molds for shaping, which were then infused with epoxy resin. Amongst all, square-shaped multilayered 3D auxetic fabric structures showed better auxeticity and mechanical stability. Compared to non-auxetic composites, significantly better energy absorption, tensile strength, and compression properties were observed for auxetic composites. In order to study the effects of pre‐crack inclination angle and filling material on granite, uniaxial compression tests were performed on pre‐cracked granite specimens without filling material and specimens filled with epoxy resin, gypsum, and organosilicon. Results indicate that the peak strength and apparent stiffness of pre‐cracked granite without filling materials increase with increasing pre‐crack inclination angle. The strain energy absorbed by the filling material improves the energy storage limit, inhibits the energy release effect when microcracks are connected to each other, and ultimately improves the compressive resistance and energy storage capacity. The strengthening effect of gypsum and epoxy resin is relatively better, which is more significant when the pre‐crack inclination angle equals 0°–60°. Finally, a damage constitutive model is established, which is in good agreement with the test and numerical simulation data. The results can provide reference for the research of grouting reinforcement of rock masses. It is difficult to effectively manage the emission of harmful smoke from flame‐retardant modified epoxy resins (EP). In order to solve this difficulty, a highly efficient flame‐resistant PAD containing phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur was synthesized using a simply one‐pot method employing 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO), 2‐amino‐5‐mercapto‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole (AMT), and terephthalaldehyde for not only enhancing its flame retardant properties but also effectively suppressing the emission of fumes. Results have confirmed that the incorporation of 5 wt% flame retardant into the EP successfully passed the UL‐94 V‐0 rating, besides 24.2% reduction in the peak of smoke produce rate (PSPR), with outstanding fire‐resistant properties and effectively reduce smoke emissions. In addition, incorporating 7.5% of PAD into EP increased its flexural strength and modulus, from 78.4 and 2917.5 to 86.6 and 3162.9 MPa, respectively. Due to the abundance of reactive groups including sulfhydryl and secondary amine in PAD, as well as the nitrogen atoms presented in the thiadiazole and benzene rings of the phosphaphenanthrene structure, which could create hydrogen bonds with the matrix and participated in π‐π interactions, therefore, the mechanical properties of flame retardant epoxy resin (FREP) were greatly enhanced. Objective: In this study, the developed bioactive dental implant (BDI) from epoxy resin (ER), hydroxyapatite (HA), and curcumin nanoparticles (CUNPs). Materials and methods: The prepared BDI were characterized using their physicochemical, mechanical, antimicrobial, bioactive, and biocompatibility study. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphology of the BDI was observed HA mineralized crystal layer after being immersed in the stimulated body fluids (SBF) solution. Results: The mechanical properties of the BDI exhibited tensile strength (250.61 ± 0.43 MPa), elongation at break (215.66 ± 0.87%), flexural modulus (03.90 ± 0.12 GPa), water absorption (05.68 ± 0.15%), and water desorption (06.42 ± 0.14%). The antimicrobial activity of BDI was observed in excellent zone of inhibition against the gram-negative (15.33 ± 0.04%) and gram- positive (15.98 ± 0.07%) bacteria. The biocompatibility study of BDI on osteoblasts cell line (MG-63) was analyzed using MTT (3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. The results were observed 85% viable cells present in the BDI compared to the control (only ER) samples. Modern society relies heavily on producing commercial and industrial plastics to improve the quality and quantity of our lives. However, increased fire risks threaten commercial operations and the potential impact of high‐performance electronic and transportation technologies that utilize polymeric materials. Despite significant monitoring and reduction of commonly used halogenated flame retardants, their worldwide usage still poses environmental hazards. Many non‐halogenated flame‐retardant compounds are viable additives for synthetic polymers; however, their incorporation often results in reduced composite homogeneity and mechanical strength. This review focuses on reactive flame retardants and the effect of polymer structure on inherent flame retardance in recent studies. The synthesis and characterization of polymeric systems (e.g. polyurethanes, polyamides, polyimides, polyesters and epoxy resins) are discussed in terms of structure–flame‐retardant performance using a complement of analytical tools, including thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, limiting oxygen index and UL 94 testing. We used a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectrophotometer to measure the spectral transmittance of epoxy resin in the 140–220-nm region. This study used dielectric materials that are commonly used in electronic devices. We assessed the penetration of VUV light with a central wavelength of 172 nm from an excimer lamp into the depth direction of the resin and evaluated it based on the absorption coefficient. The epoxy resin was irradiated with a consistent amount of VUV light. Subsequently, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) was used to observe the changes in the internal chemical state. By measuring the decrease in the peak at 1100 cm−1 on FTIR-ATR, we identified the relationship between the quantity of 172-nm photons absorbed and the number of reacting ether bonds. Further, the surface of the irradiated epoxy resin was analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to evaluate the functional group concentration after exposure to different doses of VUV light. The difference in principle between FTIR-ATR and XPS analyses was used as the basis to examine the depth-wise effects of epoxy resin irradiated with VUV light. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights To improve the subpar lubricating performance of epoxy resin, this paper presents the preparation of a novel bimetallic phyllosilicate featuring a distinctive rice‐granular morphology, which incorporates nickel and iron metal cations through a facile hydrothermal process. These phyllosilicates were then integrated into the epoxy matrix to form composites. A comprehensive analysis of the target product validates the rationality of the synthesis strategy for the as‐prepared rice‐granular bimetallic nickel/iron phyllosilicate, demonstrating a homogeneous hierarchical structure with numerous tiny nanosheets of nickel/iron phyllosilicate grown in situ on the flat surfaces of the rice‐granular metal–organic frameworks. An adequate addition of nickel/iron phyllosilicates allows for excellent dispersion within the matrix and establishes strongly bonded interfaces, steadily increasing the elastic modulus and hardness. Notably, the average friction coefficients decrease from 0.515 for the pure resin to 0.450 for the composites when the filler content reaches 7%, indicating a significant solid lubrication effect. In contrast, adding just 1% nickel/iron phyllosilicate moderately improves wear resistance, elongation at break, and tensile strength. Furthermore, it was found that as the filler content increased, the weight loss rate was reduced by approximately 43.8%, while the residual char increased by 74.2%, significantly enhancing the thermal stability of epoxy composites at high temperatures. This study offers a promising approach to preparing self‐lubricated epoxy composites with favorable mechanical and thermal properties. NiFePS was successfully synthesized via a facile two‐step self‐polymerization. Excellent mechanical properties of composites could be achieved with low content of NiFePS. This study investigates the effect of stress amplitude on the damage sensing characteristic of glass fibre reinforced (GFRP) composites under fatigue loading using the electrical resistance change (ERC) method. The electrical conductivity of GFRP composites was achieved by incorporating 0.3 wt.% multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into epoxy resin by ultrasonication method. In-situ electrical resistance measurements during fatigue tests of MWCNT-filled GFRP (MWNCT/GFRP) composites were conducted at two different stress amplitudes, S = 0.6 and S = 0.5. The average stiffness losses at failure were observed as 28% and 25% for S = 0.6 and S = 0.5 respectively. The corresponding ERC ratios at failure were found as 153% and 59% for S = 0.6 and S = 0.5, respectively. A two-parameter Weibull analysis, based on the ERC ratios corresponding to 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% (failure) fatigue life, was implemented to establish reliability curves at the two stress amplitudes. The ERC ratios at failure with a 95% reliability for S = 0.6 and S = 0.5 were determined as 64% and 23%, respectively. Finally, the remaining fatigue life and the stiffness loss of composite specimens at the ERC ratios corresponding to various Weibull reliability were found for both stress amplitudes. A significant number of steep cracks are frequently encountered in underground engineering, posing a threat to operation. The high-pressure grouting method is a commonly utilized repair technique. Nevertheless, conventional grout is prone to displacement due to its weight, making it challenging to ensure adequate filling of the cracks. Therefore, this study aims to develop a grouting material with targeted displacement and anchoring properties. Firstly, an optimal magnetic slurry composition was determined through an orthogonal test. Subsequently, XRD and SEM were used to analyze the impact of the magnetic field on the composition distribution, internal pore structure, and transient viscosity of the slurry. Afterwards, a model for localized grout diffusion under magnetic was established. The results show that the application of a magnetic field caused the slurry to compact due to magnetic forces, reducing its porosity. Moreover, the dynamic viscosity of the slurry increased exponentially with rising magnetic induction intensity. Notably, a 40.5% increase in the diffusion area was observed when the magnetic field intensity rose from 2500 to 4500 GS. The error between the measured and theoretical values of the magnetic slurry diffusion model was only 8.91%, indicating the model's accuracy in describing the slurry diffusion process under magnetic field influence. Vanillyl alcohol has emerged as a widely used building block for the development of biobased monomers. More specifically, the cationic (photo‐)polymerization of the respective diglycidyl ether (DGEVA) is known to produce materials of outstanding thermomechanical performance. Generally, chain transfer agents (CTAs) are of interest in cationic resins not only because they lead to more homogeneous polymer networks but also because they strikingly improve the polymerization speed. Herein, the aim is to compare the cationic chain‐growth photopolymerization with the thermally initiated anionic step‐growth polymerization, with and without the addition of CTAs. Indeed, CTAs lead to faster polymerization reactions as well as the formation of more homogeneous networks, especially in the case of the thermal anionic step‐growth polymerization. Resulting from curing above the TG of the respective anionic step‐growth polymer, materials with outstanding tensile toughness (>5 MJ cm−3) are obtained that result in the manufacture of potential shape‐memory polymers. Blending hydrogen into existing natural gas pipelines is a cost-effective method for large-scale hydrogen transportation. However, high hydrogen ratios cause hydrogen embrittlement in pipeline steel, limiting transportation efficiency. Due to complex structures and harsh application conditions, existing coatings are difficult to apply on pipelines. To tackle such issues, we propose an ionic liquid-polymer composite coating using epoxy resin as coating substrate, based on the competitive adsorption of methane and hydrogen on pipeline steel. Ionic liquids with high methane selectivity were selected via quantum chemical calculation. The protective effect of coatings was characterized using hydrogen pre-charging constant strain tensile tests. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that epoxy resin coatings reduce hydrogen embrittlement in X80 steel. Modified with selective CH 4 /H 2 permeability ionic liquids, the epoxy resin coating enhances methane and hydrogen competitive adsorption on the steel surface, improving hydrogen embrittlement resistance. This novel coating offers a viable solution for achieving safe and high ratio hydrogen blended transportation in natural gas pipeline. Highlights This paper presents a comprehensive study of the fabrication and joining mechanisms of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. The CFRP composites were fabricated by hand lay‐up and vacuum bagging methods. In order to improve the efficiency of the CFRP‐CFRP and CFRP‐AL 7075‐T651 joints, laminates with varying overlap lengths of 25 and 60 mm single lap joints were prepared in both multi‐riveted and hybrid bonded/riveted joint configurations. Due to the epoxy compatibility of CFRP‐CFRP joints, riveted/bonded hybrid joints (HJs) showed superior improvements compared to riveted joints for both material combinations at 25 and 60 mm overlap lengths. Non‐epoxy compatible surfaces of CFRP‐AL 7075‐T651 specimens performed similarly to riveted joints in hybrid configurations. The use of epoxy compatible surfaces was found to increase the joint strength in CFRP‐CFRP single lap hybrid joints in proportion to the increase in overlap length. Ansys non‐linear analysis and experimental results were complementary. The new improvements in joint efficiency of CFRP composites create a wide range of structural applications considering the increasing lifetime of the components and joints. Riveting of composites have negative impact on joint strentgh. Hybrid joints using a combination of rivets and adhesives can increase the load bearing capacity. Carbon fiber-epoxy laminates are used in aerospace manufacturing, e.g. as substrates for solar cells of satellites. Commonly, fibers or fibermats are impregnated with epoxy resin and placed in the required orientation. During subsequent curing, the resin molecules are crosslinked. Cured parts are characterized by their glass transition temperature (Tg). It has been observed that Tg of epoxy matrix resin vary with recorded absolute air humidity during wet fiber placement manufacturing. Based on the production data of a series production of 203 carbon fiber laminates for space application, an empirical linear relationship between the absolute air humidity at the beginning of each production day and the observed glass transition temperature of the fully cured laminate is formulated and validated. The empirical equation describes a linear decrease of achievable glass transition temperature with increasing absolute air humidity. Highlights In this study, interleaving electrospun Nylon 6.6 nanofibers in the laminate was utilized to improve interlaminar properties of glass/epoxy composite during punching and as a solution to this issue. In order to do so, virgin and nano modified samples are produced and punched and the results are compared to determine the effect of nanofibers on the damaged area as well as the three‐point bending residual strength (carried out on both penetration and exit sides) of the punched laminate. Furthermore, punch—die clearance was also varied to investigate the range in which the nano modification improves the outcome of the process on the laminated composite. According to results of this study, using of Nylon 6.6 nanofibers between composite layers causes significant decrease in the damaged area up to 50%. Also, in both virgin and nano modified laminates, increasing the punch—die clearance increases the damaged area up to 50% and reduces the residual strength of the laminates up to 17%. In addition, nano modified laminates, the residual strength increased up to 28% and 22% for three‐point bending tests carried out on both punch penetration‐ and exit‐side samples, respectively. This is due to the fact that the punch exit‐side contains more damage compared to the penetration‐side. Toughening glass/epoxy laminates using electrospoon Nylon 6.6 nanofibers. Highlights The present work highlights the benefits of matrix strengthening through the inclusion of hard particles within the resin‐impregnated woven Kevlar mat. Aluminium Oxynitride (ALON) particles are added to epoxy resin by 5, 10, and 15 volume percentages. The test coupons were developed through a hand‐lay‐up technique to estimate the low‐velocity impact resistance. The characterization was performed through EDAX and SEM to ensure the presence of the ALON particles and their homogenous distribution respectively. Low‐velocity testing is preferred to assess the capacity of the materials to rebound the incident energy. The damage assessment was made to estimate the material's stiffness. The compression after impact (CAI) was executed to observe the strength of the material after the impact. The post‐CAI micrographic observation reveals the delamination history. The results manifest that the ALON–rich coupon exhibits higher impact resistance to the scale of 33.33% than that of the ALON‐free coupon. The damage assessment and CAI results annunciate the lesser damage and higher compressive strength of ALON‐rich material respectively. The micrographic study studied after the CAI reveals the delamination and failure behavior. Additionally, explicit numerical assessment was conducted to validate the experimental results. A good agreement is attained between the experimental results and numerical predictions. The enriched stiffness of the synthesized material makes it a perfect candidate for structural application where the frequency of impact loading is high. AbstractNanodiamond has been categorized among remarkable zero dimensional nanocarbon. This carbon nanoparticle has been applied as important nanofiller in the polymeric matrices. This state-of-the-art review article portrays fundamentals, physical properties, and prospects of nanodiamond filled thermosetting matrices. Among thermosets, most research efforts have been reported on the nanodiamond filled epoxy and polyurethane matrices. Consequently, the epoxy/nanodiamond and polyurethane/nanodiamond nanocomposites have been designed. The nanodiamond nanoparticle addition in polymers caused microstructural variations and enhancements in mechanical, thermal, wear, adhesion, and related advanced features. The property improvement was observed due to the nanofiller dispersion, matrix-nanofiller interactions, and interface formation. Type of thermosetting polymer, curing agent, nanodiamond content, nanodiamond functionalities, and processing method define the final nanocomposite architecture, morphology, and ensuing characteristics. Consequently, the high-tech epoxy/nanodiamond nanocomposites and polyurethane/nanodiamond nanocomposites exposed capability toward technological relevance like coatings, microwave absorption, and biomedical. As few thermosetting matrices have been used with the nanodiamond nanofillers so far, more comprehensive future efforts are needed to disclose the actual potential of thermosetting polymer/nanodiamond nanocomposites. In this paper, a dense and well‐adherent polydopamine‐Ti4O7/epoxy resin (PDA‐Ti4O7/EP) composite coating is successfully prepared. The modified grafting of Ti4O7 by polydopamine (PDA) is achieved through the coordination complexation of unstable catechol groups in PDA with coordination unsaturated Ti atoms in Ti4O7. The potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test results show that the performance of the composite coating is improved compared with that of the pure epoxy coating, and the composite coating slows down the penetration of electrolytes and aggressive ions and improves the corrosion resistance. The composite coating with 2 wt.% PDA‐Ti4O7 filler shows the best corrosion resistance, and its |Z|0.01 Hz remains above 1011 Ω cm2 after 30 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. This can be attributed to the good barrier property of PDA‐Ti4O7 filler, which carries NH2 and OH reactive groups, interacting with the resin and matrix to improve the dispersion of the filler and the adhesion of the composite coating. The NH2 group reacts with the epoxy group in the epoxy resin in a ring‐opening reaction, which avoids the agglomeration of the filler and the uniformly dispersed filler fills the pores in the coating due to curing to improve the denseness of the coating and give full play to the barrier property of the filler. At the same time, the hydrogen bonding between the filler and the OH group in the resin and the substrate increases the adhesion of the coating. In addition, the unstable catechol group in PDA chelates with iron ions to further improve the overall corrosion resistance of the coating. The relationship between interfacial structure and thermal conductivity in epoxy resin/Al2O3 composite is important but is still elusive. Here, we illuminate this issue by investigating the role of four silane coupling agents in thermal conductivity for epoxy resin/Al2O3 composites. The results show that 3‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH560) is the best silane coupling agent to modify Al2O3, resulting in the lowest viscosity and the highest thermal conductivity of the epoxy resin/Al2O3‐KH560 composite compared with alternative systems. This is attributed to the strong interfacial interaction between Al2O3‐KH560 and epoxy resin, as confirmed by the Fowkes model and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The interfacial thermal resistance between the epoxy resin and Al2O3 is also quantitatively measured via a photothermal radiometry technique. The epoxy resin/Al2O3‐KH560 also has the lowest interfacial thermal resistance (1.50 ± 0.02 × 10−6 m2 K W−1), compared with the other three systems. Polymer composites with thermal conductivity are attractive for heat dissipation in electronic devices. We prepared epoxy resin‐based composite films filled with polythiophene [poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl)] (P3HT)/graphene complex or aluminum nitride (AlN). The composite films were characterized by electron microscopic observation, thermogravimetric analysis, and thermal conductivity measurements. The addition of a small content of P3HT/graphene complex (<1 wt%) increased both the out‐of‐plane and in‐plane thermal conductivities of the epoxy resin. The addition of AlN also increased thermal conductivity, but ≥40 wt% was required to obtain thermal conductivity comparable with that of an epoxy resin film doped with 0.9 wt% P3HT/graphene complex. The present results illustrate the potential of P3HT/graphene complexes as fillers for improving the thermal conductivity of epoxy resins without affecting their insulating properties. In this article, the axial crushing behavior of CoFeSiB amorphous alloy fiber reinforced epoxy composites (AAFRCs) with different fiber volume fractions (30%, 40%, 50%, and 60%), fiber orientations (0°, 15°, and 30°), and fiber shapes (straight and sinusoidal) were investigated under compression condition. The results show that energy absorption (EA) and crush force efficiency (CFE) of the composites show a tendency to increase and then decrease with the increase of fiber volume fractions. The appropriate increase in fiber orientation can improve the EA and the CFE of the composites. The EA of reinforced composites with sinusoidal fiber is 66% higher than that of the ones with straight fiber. Three damage modes were identified by combining the damage process images corresponding to the compressive load–displacement curves and the morphologies of the crushed composites. The EA mechanism of the new composites was analyzed by observing the damage process of the AAFRCs. Fiber reinforced polymer composite structures are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures as their strength drastically reduces under elevated temperature conditions. Therefore, it is important to improve the thermal stability of such composite structures to expand their potential range of applications. In this study, the effect of mixing two epoxy monomers, DGEBA and Tactix 742, which are di‐ and tri‐functional, respectively, on the thermal stability of their composites is investigated. The thermo‐mechanical analysis of these composites revealed that the glass transition temperature rose from 123 to 229°C when Tactix 742 is increased from 25% to 75%. The thermal resistance property is attributed to a three‐dimensional crosslink network which is initiated by tri‐functional Tactix 742. However, the higher percentage of Tactix led to a reduction in strength, possibly due to decreased crystallinity and formed amorphous phase material. Subsequently, a tensile strength model was employed to assess the performance at elevated temperatures. It was shown that a matrix with a mix of di‐ and tri‐functional monomers is highly promising for manufacturing thermoresistant polymeric composites with robust mechanical properties, thereby expanding their potential applications across various engineering fields such as civil and construction industries. A sizing agent mainly consisting of polyethersulfone and acidified multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was developed for surface modification of carbon fibers (CF) to enhance the interfacial bond and to form carbon fiber‐carbon nanotube (CF‐MWCNT) multiscale reinforcements. To prepare the modified carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites (CFRP), a vacuum molding technique was used in this study. The effects of the MWCNT‐containing sizing agent on the morphology and chemical structure of the CF surface were observed by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of MWCNT length and content on the mechanical properties of CFRP were also studied. The experimental results showed that the strength of the CFRP decreased with the increase of MWCNT length, and the MWCNT with a content of 0.05 wt% had a good reinforced effect on the CFRP. After the sizing treatment, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the CFRP is increased. These enhancements are attributed to the improved mechanical bonding and chemical bonding between CF and resin matrix. The MWCNT provides nanosized rough surface to CF and these acidified MWCNTs attached to the surface of CF with polar oxygen‐containing functional groups improve the compatibility with reinforcement and resin matrix. Highlights Highly thermal conductive polymer coating is delivered from blending thermal conductive fillers, yet sacrificing the mechanical properties, e.g. anti‐erosion, and mechanical flexibility. In this work, highly thermal conductive, mechanical flexible and anti‐erosion epoxy resin (EP)/graphite@La2O3 composite coating was developed via chemically modification. Polydopamine (PDA), γ‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane and n‐octyltrichlorosilane were used to graft La2O3 particles onto graphite (graphite@La2O3) to enhance interfacial compatibility. Graphite@La2O3 homogeneously dispersed in epoxy forming more thermal conductive pathways and layered structure. In‐plane and cross‐plane thermal conductivity of EP/graphite@La2O3 coating was 2.06 and 1.7 W/(m K), respectively. The temperature of EP/graphite@La2O3 composite coating increased from room temperature to 107.2°C in 60 s while the temperature of EP/graphite coating increased to 59.9°C within 60 s. Furthermore, dispersing graphite@La2O3 into epoxy significantly decreased the weight loss percentage from 0.17 to 0.05 mg/g while the hardness increased from around 7.0–16.77 HV, respectively. The fracture stress and strain of EP/graphite@La2O3 coating was 25 MPa and 6.0%, respectively, which is two times of EP/graphite coating. This is attributed to the chemically grafting La2O3 particles enhanced the interfacial compatibility, homogeneous dispersion and the formation of layered structures in epoxy. This study provides an effective approach to prepare thermal conductive epoxy coatings with multifunctional mechanical properties. La2O3 nanoparticles grafted on graphite successfully. Mechanical flexibility and anti‐erosion were improved by chemical grafting. Chemical modification improves the interfacial compatibility. The development of electronic fuze has placed higher demands on encapsulation resins, which are required to provide not only insulation and protection, but also higher impact resistance and good electromagnetic shielding performance. A new composite material consisting of hollow glass microspheres (HGM) and modified epoxy resin was developed. This material exhibits significant electromagnetic shielding capabilities for terahertz (THz) waves, as well as superior impact energy absorption properties. Bisphenol A‐type epoxy resin (E‐44) was modified using Al(OH)3, red phosphorus, carbon black, and SiO2, and the material properties were optimized by adjusting the HGM content. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness and impact energy absorption of the composite material in the THz band were comprehensively tested using THz time‐domain spectroscopy and split Hopkinson pressure bar testing systems. Additionally, a comprehensive evaluation of the mechanical and dielectric properties, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability of the material was conducted. The results showed that the electromagnetic shielding effect of 60 vol.% HGM hybrid‐modified resins was the best, reaching 43.78 dB. The 20 vol.% HGM hybrid‐modified resins not only has a specific absorption energy of 18.51 J/cm3, but also has the best overall performance. The graphite-resin composite bipolar plates prepared by the traditional hybrid pressing process exhibit poor conductivity, processability, and wettability due to the graphite flake layer being covered by resin, hindering the formation of a continuous conductive network, which significantly constrains their promotion and application in the field of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). In this paper, an ultra-thin flexible graphite/epoxy composite bipolar plates (BPs) with a thickness of only 0.775 mm is prepared followed by a process of flexible graphite preforming and impregnation curing. The hydrophilicity-modified BPs surface has a contact angle of 59.01° as well as flexural and compressive strengths of 11 MPa and 4 MPa and possesses a high in-plane conductivity of 380 S/cm and a low in-plane specific resistance of 6 mΩ cm2. The electrostack test results show that the hydrophilic runner channel is more conducive to the diffusion and spreading of H 2 O generated from the cathode-side reduction reaction in the flow channel, so that O 2 smoothly passes through the gas diffusion layer to participate in the reduction reaction of O 2 , and exhibits higher electric power at high current density, while the hydrophobically modified BPs has relatively poor overall performance due to ohmic losses. In this paper, a dense and well‐adherent polydopamine‐Ti4O7/epoxy resin (PDA‐Ti4O7/EP) composite coating is successfully prepared. The modified grafting of Ti4O7 by polydopamine (PDA) is achieved through the coordination complexation of unstable catechol groups in PDA with coordination unsaturated Ti atoms in Ti4O7. The potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test results show that the performance of the composite coating is improved compared with that of the pure epoxy coating, and the composite coating slows down the penetration of electrolytes and aggressive ions and improves the corrosion resistance. The composite coating with 2 wt.% PDA‐Ti4O7 filler shows the best corrosion resistance, and its |Z|0.01 Hz remains above 1011 Ω cm2 after 30 days of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. This can be attributed to the good barrier property of PDA‐Ti4O7 filler, which carries NH2 and OH reactive groups, interacting with the resin and matrix to improve the dispersion of the filler and the adhesion of the composite coating. The NH2 group reacts with the epoxy group in the epoxy resin in a ring‐opening reaction, which avoids the agglomeration of the filler and the uniformly dispersed filler fills the pores in the coating due to curing to improve the denseness of the coating and give full play to the barrier property of the filler. At the same time, the hydrogen bonding between the filler and the OH group in the resin and the substrate increases the adhesion of the coating. In addition, the unstable catechol group in PDA chelates with iron ions to further improve the overall corrosion resistance of the coating.
