Background: Layperson cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an important skill with the potential to save millions of lives. However, CPR courses often require commercial, complicated, and expensive manikins. To increase access to CPR training worldwide at very low costs, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) devices may be a suitable tool for practising compressions. Objective: This scoping review is the first step in scoping and mapping the evidence on the effectiveness of DIY devices for laypersons learning adult CPR, along with defining gaps for future research. Method: This inquiry was structured by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. A systematic search of 14 academic databases and popular media archives, with additional hand searches, identified academic reports and resources describing DIY compression device construction and/or implementation. Research studies were synthesized narratively, and the main characteristics of all resources were presented in a table. Results: Fifteen studies compared learning outcomes of CPR practice either pre-post DIY practice or between DIY and commercial manikins. Studies varied in the intervention (e.g., learning modality, time, manikin) and measurement, which precluded formal meta-analysis. Of the 55 different DIY devices described throughout all resources, 26 (47.3%) used plastic bottles for compression practice. Analysis of the resources revealed gaps in the current evidence base, such as a lack of clear assessment criteria, standardized procedures for comparisons, and sociocultural questions. Conclusion: This scoping review has identified a small number of studies which described different DIY devices for learning basic CPR skills to different extents. While there is a need for a more comprehensive search and full systematic review, the findings serve as a starting point for future investigations and support evidence-based choices regarding DIY manikins for teaching adult CPR.

This review explores the integration and effects of the Internet of Things (IoT) in education, highlighting its importance in transforming traditional teaching and learning techniques. It examines the early uses and historical growth of IoT, its development, and the turning points in its adoption. It explores IoT platforms, tools, and technologies in education, including wearables, smart devices, augmented and virtual reality, gamification, and collaborative learning. It discusses the role of IoT in improving campus management, including intelligent campuses with IoT-enabled infrastructure, energy-saving technologies, and safety and security improvements. The study discusses data security and privacy issues in IoT installations and the ethical and legal implications of data collection in the classroom. The study also discusses upcoming trends and prospects for IoT usage in education, including AI and machine learning integration. Finally, the review provides insights for educators, decision-makers, and stakeholders, identifying research gaps and recommending areas for future IoT implementation.

Movement training is thought to be very important in terms of learning both basic motor skills and new techniques in sports branches. Rhythmic gymnastics apparatus technique applications, which is a widely used method in movement training; it aims to display predetermined choreography in harmony with various tools. In this context, the aim of this experimental study is to examine the effect of rhythmic gymnastics equipment technique, which is predicted to be a good tool to improve reaction performance for movement educators and athletes, on various hand and foot reaction parameters. A total of 42 female athletes, including 22 experimental group members who had not previously practiced rhythmic gymnastics and 20 control group members, were included in the study on voluntary basis. The reaction performances of the athletes were determined using the ÇAGIN Hand and Foot Reaction Test. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 package program using Repeated Measures-ANOVA and descriptive statistics. In the pretest-posttest results of the reaction time of the individuals, it was determined that the hand simple and discriminative reaction time and foot discriminative reaction time of the experimental group decreased significantly (p<0.05). In the pretest-posttest results regarding the individuals' correct reaction rates, it was determined that only the foot selective reaction correct rate of the experimental group increased significantly (p<0.05). As a result of the study, it was observed that the application of the apparatus technique generally positively affected the athletes' hand and foot reaction times and the accuracy of the reactions.

This project report describes the process of a team of undergraduate researchers (Chemistry and Nursing majors), who analyzed 20th-century medical kits housed at The Columbus Museum (Columbus, GA, USA). Curators and museum personnel were unfamiliar with the contents and needed assistance in identifying the various chemical contents. Items were identified by the Taylor Lab, which was followed by fully elucidating the chemical information in a chemical report and student-curated exhibit. The intent of this project was to help the museum be aware of how to properly curate and store the medical collections for an extended period. Laboratory analyses were executed to determine the composition of the aged items in the collections. The historical context of these kits and their contents provided knowledge of medicine to the community of Columbus, Georgia, in addition to explaining the use of medically related items in the 20th century.

Female forest landowners (FFLO) are increasing in numbers but have been marginalized in technical training programs in the past. We conducted chainsaw safety training programs geared towards FFLO and compared program evaluation results with results from male-dominated chainsaw training workshops. FFLO are limited in their technical knowledge at the beginning of a workshop, are more likely to own different types of chainsaws than male participants, and generally liked having a women-only workshop. The takeaway is that FFLO strive in a women-only environment and that more women-focused extension training programs are needed to provide with a safe and inclusive learning environment.

This study aimed to examine how the levels of physical fidelity of controllers (high, mid and low) and task repetitions (four trials) influence undergraduate students' perceived task load and performance in an immersive virtual reality (VR)-based simulation. The simulation was developed using the Unity 3D engine. VR controllers were developed to reflect a real power tool in three fidelity levels: high (most realistic: weight and tactile engagement), mid (tactile engagement without weight) and low (control group: only controller). The tasks were designed to reflect complexities with four working postures: no walking & standing up, no walking & bending over, walking & standing up and walking & bending over. Thirty-six healthy undergraduate male students participated in the study. Participants were instructed to complete motor tasks accurately. Audio feedback (drill sound) and haptic feedback (vibration) were activated for three groups when the controller and a screw made contact. Each participant used all three fidelity controllers and repeated the four tasks in a counterbalanced order to account for order effects. The results of a one-way repeated measures MANOVA indicated that two dimensions of task load were significantly different among the three physical fidelity conditions. Also, task completion time, inaccurate operation time and inaccurate counts were significantly shorter when four tasks were repeated. The study findings provide design implications for VR-based training experiences for future workforce development.

Experiential learning in biomedical engineering curricula is a critical component to developing graduates who are equipped to contribute to technical design tasks in their careers. This paper presents the development and implementation of an undergraduate and graduate-level soft material robotics design course focused on applications in medical device design. The elective course, offered in a bioengineering department, includes modules on technical topics and hands-on projects relevant to readings, all situated within a human-centered design course. After learning and using first principles governing soft robot design and exploring literature in soft robotics, students propose a new advance in the field in a hands-on design and prototype project. The course described here aims to create a structure to engage students in fabrication and the design approaches taken by practitioners in a specific field, applied here in soft robotics, but applicable to other areas of biomedical engineering. This teaching tips article details the pedagogical tools used to facilitate design and collaboration within the course. Additionally, we aim to highlight ways in which the course creates (1) opportunities to engage undergraduates in design in preparation for capstone courses, (2) outward facing opportunities to connect with practitioners in the field, and (3) the ability to adapt this hands-on experience within a typical lecture structure as well as a hybrid online and in-person offering, thus expanding its utility in bioengineering departments. We reflect on course elements that can inform future design-based course offerings in soft robotics and other design-based multidisciplinary fields in bioengineering.

This article challenges an over-reliance on language as the primary means to communicate knowledge by adopting a language"less"ness approach to maker pedagogies and maker literacies. Having conducted makerspace and design-based research for some time, we separately and together noticed a productive relationship between wordless relational makerspace and making moments focused on craft, tools, technologies, and materials, and ways that an absence of verbal and written communication opens possibilities within learning environments. After meetings and discussions, we co-wrote the article to examine ways that language-light, even language-free pedagogical spaces allow for a different quality of design work that motivates and fosters innovation. There are three international research projects that serve as research vignettes to investigate the efficacy of languagelessness. The theory foregrounded to anchor and interpret the three vignettes draws from maker literacies research and sociomaterial orientations to knowledge development.

Biomedical Quality Engineers (QEs) ensure that medical devices are safe, reliable, and consistent. To better understand career pathways for biomedical QEs, we (1) quantified the prevalence of QE skills in entry-level biomedical engineering (BME) job listings and (2) interviewed seven biomedical Quality Engineers with a BME bachelor's degree. We mapped participant responses to the mechanisms in Social Cognitive Career Theory and identified common career pathways for biomedical QEs. To our surprise, over 40% of entry-level BME jobs were QE positions and 70% required QE-related skills. The interview participants were unaware of careers in QE careers as undergraduates and learned about QE while entering the job market--a surprising finding given the prevalence of entry-level QE jobs. The participants had low outcome expectations for QE careers and higher outcome expectations for research and development positions; instructors should be aware that a design-focused curriculum can bias students against QE careers. BME departments should introduce QE topics and experiences to help students make informed career decisions and be competitive in the sizable biomedical QE job market.

Successful translation of medical devices requires a clear pathway through the business environment, including regulatory obligations and the protection of intellectual property. Introducing these topics can be challenging for biomedical engineering programs, as students prefer hands-on activities and retain concepts best when directly applied to projects or research. To address this challenge, 10 years ago, we created a two-semester course sequence covering these topics, primarily intended for MS students focused on medical device design. Course content is delivered with a "just-in-time" approach to align with ongoing year-long design projects. In the fall semester, our course covers IP and regulatory topics relevant to the selection of an unmet clinical need for further development. The spring course covers topics related to implementation of a business model for a new product, such as licensing, clinical trials, quality systems, and submission of material to the FDA. Over 10 years, we have added numerous special features, including a regulatory science competition, a mock Pre-Submission Project reviewed by regulatory experts, and an IP presentation modeled after industry practices. In this manuscript, we review course content, structure, and outcomes. A survey was used to obtain feedback from graduates now in widely varying positions in the medical innovation space. In addition, we obtained feedback from a sample of external reviewers. With a response rate of [approximately]50%, the survey identified strong support for the courses and identified chosen career paths. The mock Pre-Submission Project was highly valued by students and their employers, as were other assignments that aligned with ongoing design or research activities. Several opportunities for improvement and possible expansion of the course were identified to further enhance this valuable part of our curriculum.

A challenge in building the biomedical engineering human factors course at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences was integrating meaningful direct experiences with medical products. The instructor also noticed a significant gap between the topics in the course and their surrounding clinical context, a low-income setting. Recognizing that devices should be designed and evaluated in the context of the local users' needs and situations, new hands-on modules were created and implemented in this BME human factors course. Students were asked to critically evaluate and make recommendations to improve the human factors aspects of the software and hardware of the IMPALA, a vital signs monitoring device developed for use in Malawi. Engaging with this medical device, students observed and understood many issues discussed in human factors, including the design of ports, controls, and other user interfaces. The collaboration between the course and the IMPALA project harnessed the local expertise of students to improve the design of a new patient monitoring system. Thus, the IMPALA project itself benefited from this collaboration. Second, students greatly benefited from applying the class concepts to the IMPALA. Students were engaged far more during the interactive components than during the lecture components. Many students successfully translated their knowledge on human factors to their final-year design project.

Simulation is accepted as an effective method of learning procedural skills. However, the translational outcomes of skills acquired through simulation still warrants investigation. We designed this study to assess if skills laboratory training in addition to bedside learning (intervention group [IG]) would provide better learning results than bedside learning alone (control group [CG]) in the context of venipuncture training. This prospective, cluster-randomized, single-blind study took place at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. Seventeen clusters of second-year medical students were randomly assigned to either IG or CG. The IG trained on venipuncture in the skills laboratory, receiving instruction after modified Payton's Four Step Method. Following the training, students of both IG and CG underwent bedside learning for one month. Afterward, students of both groups performed venipuncture on actual patients in a clinical setting. An independent, blinded assessor scored students' performance using the Integrated Procedural Protocol Instrument (IPPI) and a checklist. Patients assessed students' performance with the Communication Assessment Tool (CAT). Eight and nine clusters were randomized to the intervention and control groups, respectively. IG completed significantly more single steps of the procedure correctly (IG: 19.36 ± 3.87 for checklist items; CG: 15.57 ± 4.95; p < 0.001). IG also scored significantly better on IPPI ratings (median: IG: 27 (12) vs. CG: 21 (8); p < 0.001). Rated by patients, students' communication skills did not significantly differ between the two groups. Simulation-based venipuncture training enabled students to perform the procedure on actual patients with a higher technical accuracy than students who learned venipuncture at the bedside. Students were able to transfer the skills acquired through venipuncture training at the skill laboratory to the bedside.

The purpose of this descriptive research study was to examine collegiate instrumentalists' applications of practice strategies and their motivation orientations to practice. Respondents (N = 128) were music majors who enrolled in concert band or orchestra. Results indicated that pianists spent more time in practice followed by percussionists, brass, other instrumentalists (e.g., organ), woodwind, and string players. Collegiate instrumentalists used systematic practice strategies most frequently, followed by error correction techniques, using a metronome and listening to recordings, concentration control, analytic strategies, and the organization of practice sessions. In addition, collegiate instrumentalists were more motivated by intrinsic factors than extrinsic factors. Weekly practice hours were negatively correlated with Extrinsic Motivation: Avoid Failure, but positively correlated with Intrinsic Motivation: Growth. Implications for instrumental teaching and learning are discussed.

One of the main purposes of technology integration was for effective teaching and learning. The model of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) was the suggested framework that could be applied in different facets of the teaching and learning process. Information communication tools (ICT) are the common infrastructures used for this process, and studies of TPACK application were mainly focused on normal desktop computers, and at the university level. However, there were uncommon studies of smart technologies such as SMART Board and SMART Notebook software at the secondary level, concerning TPACK applications. Against this background, the present study evaluated secondary school teachers on the TPACK applications in smart classrooms, as well as its effect on students' performance in chemistry. Through explanatory sequential mixed method design, results were highlighted and interpreted. These included lesson observation for quantitative data on four categories of knowledge: content knowledge, technological knowledge, technological pedagogical knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge and students' performance in chemistry. While qualitative data about views were thematically analysed into strengths and challenges, as well as suggestions regarding TPACK applications and improving teaching and learning. The study involved seven teachers and 142 students, who were selected using a convenient sampling technique. The results revealed that teachers demonstrated the capacity to connect all categories of knowledge, develop, and conduct teaching where technology, pedagogy, and content interact. However, as the observed teachers acknowledged, it is challenging to overcome traditional teaching methods. This is due to several external factors, most notably the limited availability of digital equipment, and inadequate technology training, among others, which can improve the TPACK applications and promote students' engagement and learning. Further, the result of the intervention showed that teachers need continuous professional development, as it reflects significantly (p ?0.05) on students' performance in chemistry. These findings could serve as a foundation for creating policies that prioritise allocating funds to public schools for educational technology tools that will help teachers and students improve the teaching-learning process.

Pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasound is a widely used technique for monitoring pregnancies. As ultrasound equipment becomes more advanced, it becomes harder to train practitioners to be proficient in the procedure as it requires the presence of an expert, access to high-tech equipment as well as several volunteering patients. Immersive environments such as mixed reality can help trainees in this regard due to their capabilities to simulate real environments and objects. In this article, we propose a mixed reality application to facilitate training in performing pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasound when acquiring a spectrogram to measure blood velocity in the umbilical cord. The application simulates Doppler spectrograms while the trainee has the possibility of adjusting parameters such as pulse repetition frequency, sampling depth, and beam-to-flow angle. This is done using a combination of an optimized user interface, 3D-printed objects tracked using image recognition and data acquisition from a gyroscope. The application was developed for Microsoft HoloLens as the archetype of mixed reality, while a 3D-printed abdomen was used to simulate a patient. The application aims to aid in both simulated and real-life ultrasound procedures. Expert feedback and user-testing results were collected to validate the purpose and use of the designed application. Design science research was followed to propose the intended application while contributing to the literature on leveraging immersive environments for medical training and practice. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that mixed reality can be efficiently used in ultrasound training.

Vocational and technical education programs continue to play a pivotal role in developing workers' occupational safety and health skills in all industries. The Agricultural Safety Education Initiative was first conducted in the summer of 2017 as a multi-year "Train the Trainer" program to improve teachers' tractor and machinery knowledge. The National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operations Program (NSTMOP) Curriculum was used to develop and organize the training program. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a multi-year agricultural safety education professional development model. A total of 85 teachers participated in the third year of the training program. Teachers' average NSTMOP test score was 41.9 out of 50 (SD = 3.62). Teachers attending the training for the first time in 2019 scored lower (40.8, SD = 4.41) than teachers who had attended the training during all three offerings (43.2, SD = 3.00), though the difference was not statistically significant (Kruskal-Wallis H was 5.91 (2) p = 0.052). Post-experience qualitative data findings showed many teachers reported curriculum obtainment as a motivating factor for continued attendance. A benefit expressed by teachers participating in the professional development focused on higher-order instructional and alternative assessment methods for tractor and machinery safety. For these SBAE participants, the involvement in a multi-year approach to professional development is influenced when curriculum is offered.

Management and maintenance of physical facilities are ladders for climbing and achieving quality assurance in Higher Education in the 21st Century. This paper reviewed literature on the management and maintenance of physical facilities for quality assurance in Higher Education in the 21st century with the aim of accessing its implication for the academic growth and sustainability of institutions. Significantly, the administration and maintenance of physical facilities in higher education are very important to the economic and academic growth of the educational system. They are ranked among the determining factors of success in the school system. This study looked at maintenance culture in tertiary schools, innovative methods of plant maintenance and renewal in higher education as well as the benefits of maintaining school physical facilities. It is important that the habit of maintaining existing physical facilities be learned by school heads and transferred to the subordinates and students as a sustaining force and vehicle for retaining equipment and facilities in their original condition of completeness and aesthetics.

Introduction: Transnasal flexible endoscopy (TNFE) is necessary for multiple assessments in speech-language pathology (SLP), but it is generally considered an advanced practice technique to be learned during clinical practice. As such, there is no standardized way that it is taught in training programs, leading to a substantial knowledge gap for new graduates. Though peer-to-peer practice has been discussed as an important step in training, it is not clear whether it confers additional benefits above and beyond simulation. This study sought to answer that question in the areas of student confidence, endoscopy speed, and motivation to pursue further TNFE experiences. Methods: Thirty-six SLP graduate students completed TNFE training and one of two practice conditions: simulation only or simulation with additional peer-to-peer practice. Outcome measures included confidence and comfort surveys, intrinsic motivation to complete an additional TNFE experience, and speed of TNFE. Results: No significant differences were found between the two groups for any measure, and consistently low effect sizes indicated there was little difference between groups. Conclusions: These results indicate that teaching TNFE through simulation may provide similar outcomes to peer-to-peer practice during the initial training that an SLP graduate program can provide. This adds to the literature indicating that TNFE simulation is a worthwhile addition to SLP programs.

The aim of this research is to evaluate the current level of preparation in the organization of practical training as well as the facilities that are available for practical vocational training. The collaboration in education between businesses and vocational schools is an effective strategy. As a result of the rapid transformation that has taken place in the socioeconomic context for professional skills and practical training among employees, a new educational strategy is required to address these demands in order to meet the needs of the workforce. A quantitative method was applied in this research. There were 570 individuals who were chosen at random. According to the findings, the majority of instructors and technicians possessed regulations for conducting practical teaching activities as well as suitable facilities and equipment for the purpose of vocational training. This study presents a number of suggestions for improving the standard of educational institutions as well as the professional growth opportunities available to teachers and lecturers. In addition, facility management and maintenance as well as optimize the instructional facilities and equipment are required.

This study explores the human dimensions of the broad-based adoption of Short Rotation Woody Crops (SRWCs) among farmers in North Carolina. We used an actor diagramming and tracing approach to explore factors influencing farmers' adoption of SRWCs. Results suggest four factors strongly influence the adoption process: (1) market availability; (2) education awareness; (3) funding; and (4) social networking. Based on these results, we recommend that Extension professionals use the following education modules to prompt the adoption of SRWCs practices and potentially adopt other new farming practices: (1) ecological sustainability; (2) financial considerations; (3) harvesting; and (4) community building.

This study aims to examine the effects of physical variables (temperature, humidity, air quality, light, and sound) and those pertaining to the monitoring these physical variables on a group of students in terms of attention, motivation, attitudes, and perceptions of academic achievement (POA). The students were provided with a chance to monitor the physical variables through the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This study employed a causal comparative design, which is a quantitative research method. The sample chosen by convenience sampling consisted of 262 undergraduate students from five different educational environments in the faculty of education of a large state university located in the Northeast Turkey. A prototype measuring the physical variables of the educational environments and enabling to send these to the internet was developed in the context of an IoT application, and it was ensured that the students in the five different educational environments monitored the physical variables for six weeks. Data were collected by use of the prototype created in the framework of IoT and a questionnaire. Consequently, it was concluded that the physical variables did not have significant effects on attitudes, but temperature, air quality, light, and sound had significant effects on students' attention, motivation, and perceptions of academic achievement. Furthermore, results showed that monitoring the physical variables caused a difference in the students' motivation, attention, attitudes, and POA.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of those technologies with a wide range of applications, from planes to cars, from factories to homes. As IoT technology is an interdisciplinary field, it is generally one of the most difficult subjects to learn. Therefore, there is a need to use and develop new teaching methods to facilitate the teaching of IoT technology. This quasi-experimental study aims to examine the effects of synchronous and asynchronous distance courses on students' achievement and motivation in IoT education. The participants, consisting of 35 students from different engineering departments, were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group was instructed asynchronously on the Edpuzzle platform, where interactive videos were presented, and control group was taught synchronously on the Zoom application for 8 weeks. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the students in the asynchronous group were more successful in their academic achievement post-test scores. Although the synchronous group scored higher in terms of motivation, it was concluded that there was no significant difference from the other group.

The aim of this study is to provide training for science teachers on batteries, areas of use of batteries, types of batteries, things that should be paid attention to while using batteries, waste batteries, and collection, handling, recovery and/or disposal of waste batteries, and help teachers receiving the training to raise awareness among grade 5 students on these issues. The study was carried out with 58 science teachers and 575 secondary school grade 5 students. Within the scope of the study, a detailed training on the issue was provided to the teachers and attempts at raising awareness among students in four lessons were made by the teachers receiving the training. Data were obtained by making students draw "adventure of the waste battery" themed pictures and write "story of the waste battery" themed compositions as a pre-test before the workshop and a post-test after the workshop. Data were analyzed using content analysis. As a result of the study, it was observed that awareness was raised among students on the elements available in batteries, battery powered objects, points of disposal for waste batteries, places of waste battery bins, recycling of waste batteries, positive effects of collection of waste batteries, negative effects of waste batteries, and things to be done to avoid these negative effects. Embedding a pairwise key distribution approach in IoT systems is challenging as IoT devices have limited resources, such as memory, processing power, and battery life. This paper presents a secure and lightweight approach that is applied to IoT devices that are divided into Voronoi clusters. This proposed algorithm comprises XOR and concatenation operations for interactive authentication between the server and the IoT devices. Predominantly, the authentication is carried out by the server. It is observed that the algorithm is resilient against man-in-the-middle attacks, forward secrecy, Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, and offers mutual authentication. It is also observed that the given scheme has low communication and computing overheads compared to some existing methods.

While Internet of Things (IoT) devices have increased in popularity and usage, their users have become more susceptible to cyber-attacks, thus emphasizing the need to manage the resulting security risks. However, existing works reveal research gaps in IoT security risk management frameworks where the IoT architecture -- building blocks of the system -- are not adequately considered for analysis. Also, security risk management includes complex tasks requiring appropriate training and teaching methods to be applied effectively. To address these points, we first proposed a security risk management framework that captures the IoT architecture perspective as an input to further security risk management activities. We then proposed a hackathon learning model as a practical approach to teach hackathon participants to apply the IoT security risk management framework. To evaluate the benefits of the framework and the hackathon learning model, we conducted an action research study that integrated the hackathon learning model into a cybersecurity course, where students learn how to apply the framework. Our findings show that the IoT-SRM framework was beneficial in guiding students towards IoT security risk management and producing repeatable outcomes. Additionally, the study demonstrated the applicability of the hackathon model and its interventions in supporting the learning of IoT security risk management and applying the proposed framework to real-world scenarios. Background: Informal learning environments (ILEs) like Fablabs and Makerspaces have potential to facilitate development of STEM skills. However, these environments might be difficult for teachers to adopt in their teaching because of teaching approaches grounded in constructionism where the role of the teacher changes from a transmissive instructor to an active co-creator, and using high-tech equipment not normally found in schools. Purpose: The aim is to investigate teachers' self-efficacy and perceived role when teaching STEM in Fablabs and Makerspaces. This is investigated related to teaching in ILEs and using high-tech equipment. The study was conducted in two countries/regions, Flanders (Belgium) and Sweden We also compare differences between teachers depending on nationality, gender, and years of teaching experience. Sample: A total of 347 secondary school teachers completed an online survey. Quantitative analyses was used for all questions in the survey, except one open-ended question, which was analysed through inductive thematic coding. Results: The teachers reported moderate self-efficacy for teaching in ILEs , and low self-efficacy for using high-tech equipment. Some teachers described themselves as having active roles as a coach or as co-learner during visits with their students. Others saw themselves as having a passive role. Many teachers did not know what kind of role to take. The teachers who perceived an active role as a teacher in high-tech ILEs reported higher self-efficacy to teach in these environments than other teachers. Conclusions: This study shows that a constructionist approach to teaching is important if teachers are to develop self-efficacy to teach in high-tech ILEs. Thus, developing teacher practices in line with constructionism in relation to teaching in high-tech ILEs is imperative, in teacher education. The results also highlight that staff in Fablabs and Makerspaces are important for handling high-tech equipment. Hence, collaboration between staff in ILEs and teachers is of importance.

The aim of this study was to verify the concurrent validity and the biological error-free reliability of a novel low-cost commercial encoder (Ergonauta I). Validity protocol involved comparisons with a custom system and other encoder commercially available (Vitruve). Reliability protocols involved interdevices and interunit comparisons. No participants were recruited, and reliability assessments were performed in a Smith Machine by bar free fall tests. Our results showed a significant bias for mean velocity (MV) estimated by both encoders only in one of the four conditions investigated (bias = 0.05 m/s). Regarding sensitivity, the smallest detectable change suggests only values higher than 0.03 m/s must to be considered as real changes in performance, when monitoring MV and mean propulsive velocity (MPV) through Ergonauta I and Vitruve. Between-days intra-device reliability showed Ergonauta I remains highly reliable after one week for most assessments, whereas slightly less sensitive for peak velocity and peak power output.

"Objective:" Evaluate college students' perception of the effectiveness of different vending machine (VM) interventions for improving snack selection. "Participants:" A total of 194 college students with the age of =18 years. "Method:" A cross-sectional survey among a purposive sampling near VM. "Results:" Most students use VM frequently or occasionally (63.4%). The intervention perceived as most helpful for choosing healthier snacks was labeling (on or near) which snack is healthy (score 3.83/5) followed by lowering the price of healthy options (score 3.33/5), while the least helpful was having posters nearby explaining which snacks are healthier (2.35/5). Participants suggested including snacks high in protein (58.8%) and low in sugar (56.2%). Most would like to see more healthy options in VM (83.5%) and will purchase them if available (67%). "Conclusions:" Lowering the price for healthy snacks and including labels to indicate which are healthy may be the interventions to test for improving snack intake among college students.

Purpose: This study explores the impact of Industry Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) on learning factory implementation in Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). A learning factory is an action-oriented approach to teaching with participants acquiring competencies through structured self-learning processes in a production-technological learning environment. It integrates different teaching methods with the main objective of moving traditional teaching methods to become closer to real industrial problems. However, there is still limited information that can be used to evaluate the impact of IR4.0 on its implementation in UMP. Therefore, this study focuses on exploring the challenges faced by UMP in developing their learning factory and examines the effectiveness of UMP Learning Factory as a new teaching and learning process to support Industry 4.0. Design/methodology/approach: First of all, identifying a problem was done, and information regarding the topic was obtained via research from various sources. Example of sources is online journals, books, the Internet and others. It is essential to understand the rationale behind why the research should be carried out as well as the objectives of the study in relation to the topic of interest. After that, a survey of the relevant literature was carried out to compile more pertinent material and run it through the lens of the selected subject. It makes the process of establishing a theoretical framework easier, and it also improves one's knowledge of the research being done. The next step in the process involves selecting responders based on the research. In order to calculate the appropriate sample size for this study, we must identify the entire population so that we can ensure that the findings we obtain are reliable. The entire population are first filtered based on the purpose of the research, and only then is it possible to establish the size of the needed sample of respondents. This research study's data gathering techniques consisted of five steps; however, in this particular study, the researcher only employed two approaches, which focused on individual interviews and semi-structured interviews, respectively. In order to address both the study purpose and the research questions, the interview questions that were developed were meant to relate to one another. During this interview procedure, the interviewees will have the option to elaborate or supply an increasing amount of pertinent data and information. Participants in the interview who have accumulated a significant amount of experience in the relevant sector are better positioned to provide both their personal and professional perspectives. The researcher will utilize audio to gather the script from the responder so that they may collect the data for analysis. The researcher is able to find the precise data analysis from the responses with the assistance of this programme. As a result, the researcher's question to the responders can be considered credible and genuine. Each respondent may read a particular question in the questionnaire in the same manner. As a result, although the question may be trusted, this fact is mostly irrelevant given that it lacks internal validity and hence does not make it possible to answer the research topic. In conclusion, the findings of this study are analysed, and conclusions are drawn from them. Findings: In order to explore and answer research questions that are tailored to research objectives, the purpose of this study is to investigate such questions. The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence that Industry 4.0 will have on the instructional methodology that will be utilized at UMP. Regarding the second aim, the purpose is to investigate the difficulties that the Universiti Malaysia Pahang encounters in the process of creating the Learning Factory. The final goal is to investigate how well UMP Learning Factory performs as a novel approach to education and training that is intended to assist Industry 4.0. The University of Malaya in Penang (UMP), which is widely regarded as one of the premier educational institutions of its kind in Malaysia, has recently implemented a learning factory as one of its pedagogical approaches. The university's deployment of the learning factory is very recent, and as such, there is room for improvement to make the most of the potential offered by this instructional approach. However, the findings of this research indicate that there is a favourable influence on both learning and teaching. The influence of the implementation of Learning Factory, which is becoming one technique of educational reform, is one of the most important factors to consider. According to the study's findings, UMP has successfully developed a learning factory that has a major influence on the learning process and is extremely good at what it does. The student benefits from an enhanced teaching and learning experience as a direct result of the contribution made by the learning factory. When it comes to generating a learning component based on the result, several obstacles have been identified. If UMP or other institutions intend to create a new learning factory, the problems might be considered factors to consider. In the teaching and learning process context, it has been demonstrated that a learning factory is particularly successful. The learning factory approach is one of the teaching techniques that makes the students understand better and have the experience of handling and controlling the equipment. Because this method introduces the hands-on approach, it is one of the teaching methods. The learning factory method is one that, in its most fundamental form, may be particularly beneficial for students to prepare themselves for the arduous process of joining the workforce. The classroom setting will be quite similar to that of a factory, and the student will improve their general collaboration. In addition to this, they will be able to operate machines and have knowledge regarding the machines that are found in the learning factory. The learning factory makes a significant contribution to the knowledge transfer process in UMP by facilitating the development of a deeper comprehension of certain bodies of information. When compared to more traditional methods of transferring information, the student will have a much easier time comprehending the material that is taught to them through the use of the hands-on learning technique. Originality/value: This study gained some information about the impact of IR4.0 towards educational transformation, which is expected to give positive results. Basically, this research will provide further explanation about IR4.0 and educational transformation in UMP focus on learning factory. Generally, the implementation of IR4.0 in education will produce a positive result and help the students in the future. The result from this case study will hopefully be beneficial to society. The finding from this research will be used as references to all, especially top management and technical staff of UMP, for further understanding of the impact of the implementation of the learning factory. While conducting this research, seven respondents were selected from the two faculty with their own learning factories, Faculty of Industrial Management (FIM) and Faculty of Technology (FTEK). The researcher targeted lecturers and technical staff as their respondents. The overall result from the interview session was analysed. All the result is based on the interview answer to the researcher's question.

Batting or striking with a long-handled implement is an important fundamental motor skill used in several lifetime activities. This article outlines basic movement concepts that are developed through batting and provides recommendations that can serve as both curricular options for physical education and a potential homework idea for kids to explore at home.

The acceptance of IoT technologies in education by pre-service teachers will affect their intention to use these technologies in the future. Previous research has addressed the effects of variables on the acceptance of IoT technologies in education to a limited degree. Therefore, this study aims to propose and test a structural model that determines educational IoT technology acceptance. This study, the acceptance of IoT in the educational environment is modeled in the context of individual innovativeness and information and communication technologies (ICT) competencies. According to the results of the research conducted with 471 pre-service teachers, 69% intended to use IoT in education is explained in a technology acceptance model (TAM) in which TAM variables, individual innovativeness, and ICT competencies are combined.

Healthy lifestyle technologies (HLT) have gained popularity in young people's daily lives, but the long-term effect of these technologies on their physical activity (PA) participation and health learning is unclear. This systematic review (a) explores the effect of HLT use on the PA participation and health learning of young people (aged 13-18), and (b) determines whether the effects were long-term and/or sustainable. Literature searches were conducted in five databases to identify studies published in academic journals in English between 2011 to 2022 which explored young people's use of HLT to support their PA participation and health learning. Twenty-six studies were identified. The reported impact of these technologies focused on three dimensions: behavior change, psychological responses, and facilitators and barriers to HLT use. This review concluded that HLT can have positive short-term effects on young people's PA participation and health learning, but the long term or sustainable influence remains inconclusive.

Data collection is crucial in securing evidence to support students' arguments during scientific inquiries. However, due to the high costs associated with equipping schools with various measurement devices, students are limited in the scope of their scientific inquiry. Arduino can be proposed as a solution to the lack of measurement devices in schools. With Arduino, students can create various measurement devices by connecting different sensors, customize these devices to suit their inquiries, and implement remote sensing using the Internet of Things. However, even when promising new technology serves as a beneficial tool for teaching and learning, its successful integration into the educational system can be challenging if teachers struggle to use it. Technical issues often discourage teachers from incorporating potentially valuable technologies into their classrooms. This article examined the adoption of Arduino in three different cases involving teachers from various educational institutions: a gifted education center, an autonomous club activity in a middle school, and a local community center. We identified four major difficulties: 1) selection of appropriate technologies; 2) credibility issues with information from the Internet; 3) technical complexity due to the intervention of multiple variables; and 4) compliance issues with related acts and regulations. We described each of the technical challenges that teachers faced, in detail, and how they dealt with them. Finally, we discussed suggestions for reducing the barriers to Arduino use for teachers and proposed areas for further research.

In this paper, we present the results of an investigation into the effects of engaging with robotic telescopes during an Astronomy 101 (Astro101) course in the United States and Canada on the self-efficacy of students. Using an astronomy self-efficacy survey that measures both astronomy personal self-efficacy and instrumental self-efficacy, the authors probed their covariance with the respondents' experience of an Astro101 course that uses robotic telescopes to collect astronomical data. Strong effects on both self-efficacy scales were seen over the period of a semester utilizing a scalable educational design using robotic telescopes. After participation in the course, the results show that the gender gap in self-efficacy between self-identified men and women is largely reduced to statistically insignificant differences compared to the initial large significant difference.

Several universities are accelerating their tempo to navigate the rapidly changing environment towards the digital age. Previous literature has been interested in exploring the continuous trend of digital transformation, along with digital maturity models. However, there is still inconsiderable guidance for practitioners regarding the concrete frameworks and concepts for planning with the aim of accomplishing digital maturity. This study examines the reality of digital transformation maturity in Egyptian universities through the development of a digital maturity model based on the Logical Framework Approach (LFA) or goal-oriented project planning. This study has a double contribution, as follows: it provides university practitioners with a conceptual tool to analyze their challenges in the new landscape of digital transformation and provides valuable insights for researchers regarding the new emerging phenomena of digital maturity at the national level, in general, and universities, in particular. The results of the research indicate that the proposed digital maturity model includes seven dimensions, they are as follows: leadership, planning and management, quality assurance, scientific research, digital teaching and learning, community service, equipment and technological infrastructure, and technological culture. Universities can use the Developed Measurement Model for digital maturity to measure their current situation and to guide their strategies along the transition from digital transformation to digital maturity.

Biomedical engineering capstone design courses provide a salient opportunity to discuss ethical considerations in engineering. As technology and society develop and change, new challenges constantly arise related to how society and technology inform each other. In this space, ethical training for engineering students is critically important for future practicing engineers who may face significant once-in-a-career ethical challenges as well as the smaller compounding daily decisions that impact biomedical research and device design. In this context, topics of social justice as well as bias and inclusion in data and design are particularly important for biomedical engineers to understand the given the human-centered approach to engineering practice. To engage biomedical engineering students in discussion and practice of these concepts, we present a capstone course module to teach traditional ethics studies while exposing students to cases of bias in design in modern technologies including AI, sensors, and devices. This curriculum engages students in discussion of these topics facilitated by biotechnology case studies. All together, we see the curriculum presented here as a response to the need for biomedical engineers to understand the human-centered data in ethical decision-making as well as to meet the desires of students to put engineering in the context of human-centered design and social justice.

Completion of an escape room activity requires participants to work as a team to find hidden clues and solve challenging puzzles to escape before time expires. The use of escape rooms for active learning may produce a positive classroom environment by improving teamwork skills, encouraging engagement with course materials, fostering intellectual curiosity, and facilitating conceptual understanding beyond the prescribed procedure. An escape room was developed for the Mechanics of Materials course at the United States Military Academy. The escape room was designed based on a hypothetical theme to increase student motivation and curiosity. Students were required to complete five puzzles that involved navigating through underground steam tunnels to locate the boiler in the classroom building where their final examination would take place. This task was intended to force the cancellation of the examination. The five puzzles assessed the students' knowledge of torsional members, statically indeterminate axially loaded members, flexural members, stress transformation, strain transformation, and thin-walled pressure vessels. The escape room was piloted in five sections ranging from 15 to 18 students. Teams of five to six students completed the escape room activity. The escape room increased active participation and made the studepnts aware of the concepts they needed to focus on for the final examination. This case study includes details on the complete design of the escape room, including the problems presented, results of student teams, and student feedback.
