A comparative study has been conducted on methods for accounting for the influence of losses in the stator iron of squirrel-cage induction motors on the operating parameters. A comparison was made between reference data and calculation results of the nominal mode parameters of an asynchronous motor without considering losses in the stator iron and with their consideration using equivalent resistances connected in parallel to the motor, as well as equivalent circuits of losses in the stator. The effect of the ratio of active and inductive components of the load of equivalent stator loss circuits on the results of mathematical modeling has been investigated. The study was carried out based on a universal mathematical model of an asynchronous motor of electromechanical systems with an arbitrary stator winding scheme. An algorithm for determining and adjusting the parameters of the stator loss circuits during the integration of the differential equations of electrical and mechanical balance of the asynchronous motor to a steady-state value has been developed, based on the values of losses in the stator iron (depending on the induction and frequency) and the effective value of the current of the equivalent circuit. To ensure solution stability, the use of an iteration coefficient and discretization of resistance adjustment has been justified. The application of stator iron loss circuits in the mathematical model of an asynchronous machine in generator mode has been justified, when the use of parallel connected equivalent resistances contradicts the machine's energy diagram. Accurate calculation of equivalent circuit parameters is a prerequisite for accurately calculating the large‐capacity synchronous condenser parameter model. Due to its special transient operating conditions, the high transient magnetic saturation effect during operation causes the non‐linearity and time‐varying of the equivalent circuit parameters. The field mutual leakage reactance is the critical factor affecting the field current, and the time‐varying of the equivalent circuit parameters is closely related to the field current. However, the existing equivalent circuit parameter calculation methods considering field leakage reactance cannot achieve time‐varying parameters. A calculation method of time‐varying equivalent circuit parameters based on a back propagation neural network algorithm is proposed, which solves the calculation problem of time‐varying equivalent circuit parameters considering field mutual leakage reactance. Then, a 300MVar condenser is taken as the research object, and the proposed method is used to simulate the different operating conditions of the condenser and verified by the finite element method and experiment. The results show that the method improves the calculation accuracy of the equivalent circuit parameter model, reduces the calculation time, and applies to different operating conditions. Impedance Spectroscopy (IS) is a general term for the technique referring to small-signal measurements of the linear electrical response of a domain of interest. This method is based on the analysis of the system's electrical response to yield helpful information about its domain-dependent physicochemical properties (generally, the analysis is carried out in the frequency domain). Nowadays, there are many areas of application where IS can be used to evaluate or enhance the development of emerging products and processes. As a contribution to this field of research, this paper presents relevant theoretical–practical aspects of the interpretation and analysis of the electrical behavior of materials based on IS and IS modelling. The work starts by historically introducing IS and then goes through different domains of application of the technique, such as Materials Science and correlated areas. Afterwards, an introduction to IS usage for constructing equivalent electrical circuits is presented, aiming at modelling the materials' electrical behavior, followed by examples from the literature that use the two possible circuit development approaches, the series and the parallel association of circuit elements. Lastly, the authors present a case study of their most recent efforts of a circuit model development of relative humidity (RH) sensors based on heterogeneous mixed metal oxide (MMO) nanostructures, used to understand and identify existing contributions to the overall electrical response of the sensors to moisture; in their case, the electrical response of the MMO sensors was modelled with a high level of superposition between the experimental and fitted data, using a parallel combination of circuit elements, which is an unconventional one. Electrical equivalent circuits are a widely applied tool with which electrical processes can be rationalized. There is a wide‐ranging selection of fields from bioelectrochemistry to batteries to fuel cells making use of this tool. Enabling meta‐analysis on the similarities and differences in the used circuits will help to identify commonly used circuits and aid in evaluating the underlying physics. We present a method and an implementation that enables the conversion of circuits included in scientific publications into a machine‐readable form for generating machine learning datasets or circuit simulations. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is a widely used, nondestructive electrochemical technique for analyzing many different systems. Currently, the most popular analysis method for EIS data is via Equivalent Circuit Models (ECMs). Many programs exist for constructing ECMs and fitting them to data, but these programs are often closed-source. In this work, we present an open-source program for equivalent circuit modeling called DECiM, which relies heavily on human input but is easy to operate. With two examples, we show how DECiM can easily and effectively validate spectra and construct and fit ECMs to data. The simple structure and open-source nature of DECiM make implementing new features easy, rendering the program versatile for impedance data analysis.

Abstract Harmonic magnetic gears (HMGs) have the advantage of lubrication‐free, high speed ratio and high torque density, which make it an attractive solution for safety critical applications. Due to eccentricity caused by machining and assembly, HMG suffers from dynamic eccentricity (DE) in operation, however, its effect on HMG performance is still unknown. Transmission characteristic of HMG under DE is studied. First, a magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model of HMG is proposed to build the magnetic coupling torque analytically, and the geometry of air gap is analysed parametrically to derive its equivalent reluctances. Flux density and coupling torque can be acquired by solving MEC equations. The accuracy of the MEC model is verified by finite element method. To study the transmission characteristic, an electromechanical coupling simulation framework for HMG is constructed, motion trajectories of rotors are investigated in case of DE, the output torque in locked‐rotor condition and speed response in continuous operation can be derived by simulation. It is found that torque ripples that have the same frequency with input rotor are induced by DE; the results are then verified in the experiment. This paper provides a theoretical guidance for the design and condition monitoring of HMG.

Abstract The two‐dimensional (2D) analytical model for the calculation of the components of the flux density distribution in the air gap in a dual‐stator axial‐field flux‐switching permanent magnet (PM) motor (DSAFFSPM) is presented. The novelties of this study are deriving a 2D hybrid analytical model and replacing the rotor teeth with some surface currents for the calculation of air‐gap magnetic flux density for the first time in the DSAFFSPM motor. The 2D analytical model for DSAFFSPMs is more challenging due to the doubly salient structure and inner PM of the stator. 1D analytical interior PMs are first transferred to the bore of the stator body using the magnetic equivalent circuit model (MEC). Next, the effects of the rotor teeth are taken into consideration by injecting virtual surface currents for 2D analytical model. Applying boundary conditions and solving the Laplace/Poisson equations, the vertical and tangential flux components of the flux density distribution in the air‐gap DSAFFSPM motor are computed. The verification of the proposed method and the obtained results are validated by the 3D finite element method.

Metamaterial components and antennas are based on the general understanding that an artificial structure composed of adequately designed and manufactured elementary cells or arrays has unusual resonance and propagation properties. Metamaterials exhibit equivalent values of the dielectric constant and magnetic permeability that are both negative simultaneously, in contrast with ordinary materials. Single elements, periodic, or quasi-periodic configurations can be suitable for a metamaterial response. In this paper, equivalent circuits for microwave propagation and resonance are compared, deriving a lumped element modeling complementary to those already available in the literature, with a particular focus on planar resonating devices and calculating the effective value for the dielectric constant and the magnetic permeability directly from experimental findings using the impedance (Z-parameters) notation. This paper introduces a new approach for analyzing the dynamics of DC–DC converters. Currently, the primary widely accepted method for examining dynamic processes is the Small Signal Analysis technique. However, when applied to modern complex converters, this method poses additional challenges in formulating and solving systems of differential equations. The method proposed in this paper is based on its application to the analysis of dynamic modes of energy functions—Lagrangians. These functions make it possible to define simple criteria to describe the course of dynamic processes, and in the end define an equivalent (approximating) conventional converter identical to the original one with respect to the course of dynamics. If the magnetic and electrical energies in the Lagrangians of both the converters are equal, the outcome is practically identical transient processes. These findings were confirmed by both theoretical analysis and experimentally modelling the dynamics of the initial converter and an equivalent to it in the Matlab–Simscape program. An additional possibility of using the transfer functions of a conventional boost converter for the theoretical analysis of the converters of much greater orders is also discussed. The dynamics of photoexcited carriers in magnetron sputtered ZnO films is characterized employing time-domain impedance analysis, which is based on the measurements of the surface photovoltage (SPV) transients. The studies focus on observing the damage after the implantation of Nd+ ions in ZnO layers and a subsequent anneal. We observed the positive and negative components of the measured SPV transient and develop equivalent circuits of the structure involving multiple series of parallel resistance (R), capacitance (C), and inductance (L) elements, and derive a simple fitting procedure which allows to reproduce accurately the measured SPV transient. The relationship between these RCL elements and a rough physical picture of the charge transport phenomena in the interface regions of the structure is envisaged. Unbalanced-fed Tightly-Coupled Dipole Arrays (TCDAs) allow for the realization of ultrawideband, wide-scanning phased arrays without the need for baluns, which may increase size, weight, and cost. However, unbalanced-fed TCDAs often have additional radiating modes and common-mode resonances which may degrade performance. In this paper, a scan impedance model is presented which describes performance in terms of a combination of even and odd monopole and dipole radiating modes. An intermodal coupling term is included to account for performance when scanning in the E-plane. Each mode is calculated individually in a full-wave solver and the model is then validated by comparing the proposed combination to a full simulation of the unbalanced-fed TCDA. A coaxial extension technique is then introduced to increase the impedance of the monopole-like radiating even mode, allowing the unbalanced-fed array to match the performance of the balanced-fed version without shorting posts or significant redesign of the elements or lattice.

An extraction method to obtain the noise model parameter $T_{\mathrm { d}}$ in deep submicron MOSFETs directly from radio frequency (RF) scattering parameters and noise figure measurements is presented. A simplified noise equivalent circuit, along with closed-form solutions to calculate the RF noise figure of MOSFET is developed. On-wafer experimental verification is presented and a comparison with tuner based method is given. Good agreement is obtained between simulated and measured results for $16\times 1\times 2{{\mu }\rm m}$ (number of gate fingers $\times $ unit gatewidth $\times $ cells) gatelength MOSFETs.

The t-rail electrode is an effective method to enhance the silicon optoelectronic modulator's performance. To design and optimize T-rail electrodes, engineers often rely on finite-element numerical simulations that require complex device modeling and enormous computing resources. In this paper, we present an equivalent circuit model for carrier-depletion-based push-pull silicon modulators with T-rail electrodes. The analytical solution for the bandwidth of the modulator can be derived from the equivalent circuit. The utilization of the analytical solution offers advantages in terms of memory conservation and flexibility. The values calculated by the equivalent circuit model are in excellent agreement with the numerical full-wave HFSS simulations. Hence, the proposed model can accurately and efficiently develop silicon optical modulators.

Abstract The aim of this article is to develop a rotor reconstruction method for the V‐shaped interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine so that the subdomain method to analytically calculate the air‐gap flux density can be applied. With the proposed method, the V‐shaped IPM rotor with rectangular magnets, magnetic barriers, and saturated iron bridges can be transformed into a U‐shaped equivalent analytical model. The geometry and material parameters of the magnets in the equivalent U‐shaped model can be determined according to the flux equivalence in the air‐gap of the motor. Then using the subdomain method on the U‐shaped equivalent rotor, the static magnetic field problem can be solved and the flux density distribution in the air‐gap be obtained. The validity of this method and accuracy of the solution is verified by the finite element method with case studies. Compared with existing methods, the improved subdomain method has higher accuracy in calculating flux density including radial and tangential components. The presented rotor reconstruction method is not only limited to single‐layer V‐shaped rotor, it can also be applied to other IPM rotors with more complex structures. It is valuable in the design, optimisation of IPM motors, and even development of new rotor topology.

In this paper, we express Thévenin equivalent circuits seen looking into the terminals of the small-signal model of the vacuum tube triode in terms of the Thévenin equivalent circuits seen looking out of the other terminals and apply them to the analysis of the common-cathode, common-plate, and common-grid single-tube amplifier configurations, as well as a differential pair amplifier. This is an adaptation of equivalent circuit techniques for transistor circuits pioneered by Marshall Leach. The electrification of the transport sector increases the demand for a battery management system that allows the Li-ion battery to work in a sophisticated way to reach its maximum. The main focus of the battery management system is the estimation of the battery's state of charge (SOC) which is an indicator to determine the driving range of an electric vehicle. However, battery modeling has a direct influence on SOC estimation. In this article, the equivalent circuit model (ECM) and extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm are combined for SOC estimation of the Li-ion battery. Since the performance of Kalman filter algorithms strictly depends on noise covariance matrices, incorrect values reduce the accuracy and make divergence in state estimation. Therefore, it is motivated to analyze the impact of process noise and measurement noise covariance matrix values on SOC estimation using Kalman filter algorithms. Ten different combinations of noise covariance matrices are employed to analyze the effect of these matrices on SOC estimation. As a result, the tuning of the filter is critical for improvement in state estimation regardless of the type of the battery model and filtering technique. The matrix values are chosen to take into account the convergence rate and estimation error. To validate the effectiveness of the chosen noise covariance matrices, the simulation results of the ECM based EKF estimation method is superimposed with the discharge curves available in the data sheet. Abstract A novel 24 GHz circularly polarised metasurface rectenna for wireless power transmission is designed in this study. Based on experimental measurements and retro‐simulation, an effective approach is proposed to extract the parasitic parameters of a Schottky diode. A highly efficient millimetre wave rectifier with a measured efficiency of 63% is constructed based on the exact equivalent circuit parameters of a diode. A circularly polarised metasurface antenna is adopted as the receiving antenna, and the gain is enhanced by introducing metal vias around the metasurface. The antenna and the rectifier are connected directly via a microstrip line. Measurements show that the metasurface antenna has a gain of 11.3 dBic and an axial ratio of 2.5 dB at 24 GHz. The measured conversion efficiency of the rectenna reaches 63% at 300 Ω load when the input power is 15.2 dBm. The rectenna has the advantages of low profile, which can be conformal to the electrical equipment.

Abstract The spoke‐type arrangement of permanent magnets (PMs) in rotor of Vernier PM (VPM) machines was first introduced in a dual‐stator topology to overcome low‐power drawback of VPM machines. However, this structure is mostly applicable for high‐power motor drives. A non‐ferromagnetic spoke array VPM generator with a special rotor structure for small‐scale wind turbine generator is presented. The leakage flux lines tend to be aligned with the main flux routes due to a special design of flux barriers in end portion of PM housings. High torque‐density, low weight, torque‐speed curve with a wide constant torque region, promising efficiency, and power factor are the advantages of the proposed machine. An Equivalent‐Magnetic‐Network (EMN) model is established for predicting the complex behaviour of flux lines and operating quantities of the proposed structure with reasonable accuracy. The contribution of the modelling method includes a special mesh cell for the air‐gap permeance network to more accurately capture the flux routes, continuous positioning method for omitting spikes on post‐processing waveforms due to numerical errors, and a stable solving flowchart with a high convergence rate. The validity of the EMN model is validated by comparing the operating waveforms of the machine with the corresponding waveforms obtained by the finite element and experiments. The paper presents a step by step procedure to identify the parameter values of synchronous machines and determine the equivalent circuit. Furthermore the study expands to exam the performance characteristics of the machines. In other wards study the three phase synchronous machines behaviour in steady-state or dynamic behaviour. The results are exposed that the advantage of three phase synchronous machines and why three phase synchronous machines have been used for widely range in electrical system applications and network grid. Usual standards recommend different tests on a platform in order to determine these parameters. This report include the result of tests at open circuit characteristic (OCC) and short circuit characteristic (SCC) of the machine, open loop voltage/frequency (V/F) control mode of the drive system, operating with high frequency PWM (pulse width modulation), exhibits the impact of load changes on the synchronous motor with a fixed field excitation by plotting the phasor diagram and impact of varying field excitation on the synchronous motor with fixed load in terms of V-curves. Furthermore the correlation between current, excitation and torque is investigated. The purpose of this experiment is to obtain the machines parameters experimentally and comparing with manufacture data sheet. Eventually, discussing the obtained results for all milestones individually.

A three-phase GaN-based motor inverter IC with three integrated phase current mirror sensors (sense-FETs or sense-HEMTs, 1200:1 ratio), a temperature sensor, and an amplifier is presented and experimentally operated. The three low-side currents are read out by virtual grounding transimpedance amplifiers. A modified summed DC current readout circuit using only one amplifier is also discussed. During continuous 24 V motor operation with space-vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM), the sensor signal is measured and a bidirectional measurement capability is verified. The measured risetime of the sensor signal is 51 ns, indicating around 7 MHz bandwidth (without intentional optimization for high bandwidth). The IC is operated up to 32 V on DC-biased semi-floating substrate to limit negative static back-gating of the high-side transistors to around −7% of the DC-link voltage. Analysis of the capacitive coupling from the three switch-nodes to the substrate is calculated for SVPWM based on capacitance measurement, resulting in four discrete semi-floating substrate voltage levels, which is experimentally verified. Measurement of phase angle using bioimpedance analysis (BIA) has become popular as an index of so-called "cellular health". What precisely is meant by this term is not always clear but strong relationships have been found between cellular water status (the relative amounts of extra- and intracellular water), cell membrane integrity and cellular mass. Much of the current research is empirical observation and frequently pays little regard to the underlying biophysical models that underpin the BIA technique or attempts to provide mechanistic explanations for the observations. This brief review seeks to provide a basic understanding of the electrical models frequently used to describe the passive electrical properties of tissues with particular focus on phase angle. In addition, it draws attention to some practical concerns in the measurement of phase angle and notes the additional understanding that can be gained when phase angle are obtained with bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) rather than single frequency BIA (SFBIA) along with the potential for simulation modelling. Considering the proliferation of power electronics applications and distributed energy resources, modern power grids are facing a significant increase in harmonic currents circulation and supply voltage deterioration, occasionally associated with small frequency variations. In such a context, the understanding of power phenomena in circuits with linear and non-linear loads under non-sinusoidal voltage conditions is nontrivial and still does not allow for an easy interpretation of harmonic sources, harmonic power flow or the identification of the parameters of a proper equivalent circuit. The main challenge is to develop modern theoretical approaches for load characterization, modeling, and parameter estimation so that new techniques can be formulated to provide adequate guiding for the analysis, compensation, revenue metering, accountability and other applications of power systems. Thus, based on the Conservative Power Theory (CPT) and further decomposition of its apparent power and power factor definitions, this paper proposes a novel methodology for estimating equivalent parameters and for proposing proper equivalent circuits capable of representing/modeling the main characteristics of single-phase generic loads (black boxes) and the related power phenomena in terms of passive dipoles (linear loads) or of harmonic voltage/current sources and their intrinsic transimpedances/transadmittances (non-linear loads). Simulation and experimental results were depicted to support and validate the proposed approach, showing that it might be a powerful modeling technique to represent generic loads in a modern power grid scenario, while being used for complex applications such as reactive power compensation or accountability in circuits with nonlinear loads and distorted voltages. A novel 24 GHz circularly polarised metasurface rectenna for wireless power transmission is designed in this study. Based on experimental measurements and retro‐simulation, an effective approach is proposed to extract the parasitic parameters of a Schottky diode. A highly efficient millimetre wave rectifier with a measured efficiency of 63% is constructed based on the exact equivalent circuit parameters of a diode. A circularly polarised metasurface antenna is adopted as the receiving antenna, and the gain is enhanced by introducing metal vias around the metasurface. The antenna and the rectifier are connected directly via a microstrip line. Measurements show that the metasurface antenna has a gain of 11.3 dBic and an axial ratio of 2.5 dB at 24 GHz. The measured conversion efficiency of the rectenna reaches 63% at 300 Ω load when the input power is 15.2 dBm. The wireless power transfer systems represent a viable solution to make more user friendly the procedure of charging the battery of electric vehicles. The performances of these systems are greatly affected by their compensation networks and are usually studied by considering the first harmonic equivalent circuit of the system. This paper presents a new approach to writing the equations that describe these circuits and expresses them in a form that highlight the contribution of the coupled coils and of their compensation networks. The procedure to obtain the equations is described in details and the equations themselves are analyzed to derive from them the qualitative characteristics of the wireless power transfer system. In the last part of the paper a numerical analysis of a study case is reported, supporting the results by means of simulations.

In classical antenna theory, the Thévenin equivalent circuit is a commonly used tool to analyze the characteristics of receiving antennas. However, when dealing with a lossy antenna that is near a large load impedance, this circuit has limitations in determining the loss and scattered powers. To overcome this limitation, this work models and analyzes the antenna directly as a receiver and visualizes the flow of field energy around the antenna through generating streamlines of the Poynting vector field. Motivated by the Poynting streamline analysis, a new equivalent circuit for receiving lossy electric and magnetic dipole antennas is introduced in response to an incident plane wave, which addresses the shortcomings of the traditional Thévenin equivalent circuits.

We discuss the analysis of a piezoelectric energy harvester for random mechanical vibrations, and we assess the performance improvement guaranteed by interposing a matching network between the transducer and the electrical load, in terms of average output power and power efficiency. The mathematical model describing the harvester is a system of stochastic differential equations, where both cases of linear and nonlinear devices are considered. In the linear case, the power delivered to the load is increased by a factor of about 20 with respect to the direct connection, with a similar increase in the conversion efficiency. In the nonlinear case, we use a moment closure technique to calculate the first- and second-order moments of the electro-mechanical variables in the weak noise limit. Moment calculation is used to determine the optimal values of the matching network components that maximize the performance. In the strong noise limit, the state equations are integrated numerically to determine the same performance metrics. Our analysis shows that a properly designed matching network improves the performance by a significant amount, especially at low noise intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spoke‐type arrangement of permanent magnets (PMs) in rotor of Vernier PM (VPM) machines was first introduced in a dual‐stator topology to overcome low‐power drawback of VPM machines. However, this structure is mostly applicable for high‐power motor drives. A non‐ferromagnetic spoke array VPM generator with a special rotor structure for small‐scale wind turbine generator is presented. The leakage flux lines tend to be aligned with the main flux routes due to a special design of flux barriers in end portion of PM housings. High torque‐density, low weight, torque‐speed curve with a wide constant torque region, promising efficiency, and power factor are the advantages of the proposed machine. An Equivalent‐Magnetic‐Network (EMN) model is established for predicting the complex behaviour of flux lines and operating quantities of the proposed structure with reasonable accuracy. The contribution of the modelling method includes a special mesh cell for the air‐gap permeance network to more accurately capture the flux routes, continuous positioning method for omitting spikes on post‐processing waveforms due to numerical errors, and a stable solving flowchart with a high convergence rate. The validity of the EMN model is validated by comparing the operating waveforms of the machine with the corresponding waveforms obtained by the finite element and experiments. This paper is concerned with the development and numerical implementation of a mathematical model for studying electromagnetic processes in body tissues at the cellular level under the action of sine-wave voltage of different frequencies. The basis of the model is an equivalent circuit that takes into account the structural features of one of the most elaborate skeletal muscle tissues. The model allows describing the electromagnetic processes occurring in the muscle tissue at the level of its individual cells under the action of sine-wave voltage of differing frequency. The model adequacy is confirmed by comparing the results of calculations of the frequency dependence of the modulus of the complex permittivity and experimental data. The results of calculations when the electrodes are located along the muscle tissues give an idea of the conductivity of the epimysium and the muscle cells themselves, which, in turn, indicates the level of "activity" of the muscle tissue. This paper reviews advanced modeling and analysis techniques useful in the description, design, and optimization of mechanical energy harvesting systems based on the collection of energy from vibration sources. The added value of the present contribution is to demonstrate the benefits of the exploitation of advanced techniques, most often inherited from other fields of physics and engineering, to improve the performance of such systems. The review is focused on the modeling techniques that apply to the entire energy source/mechanical oscillator/transducer/electrical load chain, describing mechanical–electrical analogies to represent the collective behavior as the cascade of equivalent electrical two-ports, introducing matching networks enhancing the energy transfer to the load, and discussing the main numerical techniques in the frequency and time domains that can be used to analyze linear and nonlinear harvesters, both in the case of deterministic and stochastic excitations.
