We have developed a type of L-shaped single-component geophone array as a single station (L-array station) for surface microseismic monitoring. The L-array station consists of two orthogonal sensor arrays, each being a linear array of single-component sensors. L-array stations can be used to accurately estimate the polarization of first arrivals without amplitude picking. In a synthetic example, we first use segmentally iterative ray tracing (SIRT) method and forward model to calculate the travel time and polarization of first arrivals at a set of L-array stations. Then, for each L-array station, the relative delay times of first arrivals along sensor arrays are used to estimate the polarization vector. The small errors in estimated polarization vectors show the reliability and robustness of polarization estimation based on L-array stations. We then use reverse-time ray-tracing (RTRT) method to locate the source position based on estimated polarizations at a set of L-array stations. Very small errors in inverted source location and origin time indicate the great potential of L-array stations for source localization applications in surface microseismic monitoring.

The wavelet packet transform is a new time-frequency analysis method, and is superior to the traditional wavelet transform and Fourier transform, which can finely do time-frequency dividion on seismic data. A series of simulation experiments on analog seismic signals wavelet packet decomposition and reconstruction at different scales were done by combining different noisy seismic signals, in order to achieve noise removal at optimal wavelet decomposition scale. Simulation results and real data experiments showed that the wavelet packet transform method can effectively remove the noise in seismic signals and retain the valid signals, wavelet packet transform denoising is very effective.

The paper is utilizes the double difference method of to relocate the north and south earthquake belt's Ludian earthquake sequence to obtained the Ludian earthquake sequence's detailed earthquake parameters. And at the same time we have established an whole set of perfect method in data processing and result analysising. Have the ability of useing'the north and south earthquake belt earthquake to strengthen the monitor's real time data to accuratly relocate the medium intensity earthquake sequenc of the north and south belt. Thus,we could produce the more accurate earthquake parameter, and short provides a more conclusive evidence into the warning area division and earthquake forecast.

The paper rests on the basic principle of the double difference method, through using Kennett and Engdahl(1991)’s IASPEI Earth model which can be used in computation theoretical travel time in the condition of regional and telseismic earthquake .We have developed a double difference program which can be used in the regional and teleseismic earthquake. And utilizes this program to relocate the Jiashi Ms 6.8 earthquake sequence in Xinjiang province on 24/2/2,003, obtained a quite good result.

Based on the primary theory of location, it is found that the data recorded at nearby stations are applicable in double difference relocation algorithm, but not in other relative location algorithms. Equation derivation and simulated calculation demonstrate that double difference algorithm allows to get the absolute locations of earthquakes with certain accuracy by using the nearby stations records. The errors of relative location become larger when using the nearby station records alone than that using the distant station records. Combining the nearby and distant station records, the best locations are obtained. In the case that hypocenter depth is far less than the epicenter distance without depth phases available, only the relative epicenter distribution could be obtained accurately by double difference method, the depth determined would be not stable. The relocation test of a part of aftershocks in Jiashi earthquake sequence verify the effect of nearby station records on the double difference algorithm mentioned above.

Noise mixed in the recorded seismic signals often affects the data analysis result. To solve this problem, wavelet packet decomposition technology is selected to reduce the noise. The principle, denoising steps and algorithm of wavelet packet decomposition technology are introduced with its effectiveness and reliability verified by computer simulation. Meanwhile, split-radix FFT algorithm is used to rapidly perform spectral analysis for seismic signals. Compared with radix-2 FFT and radix-4 FFT, split-radix algorithm can significantly reduce calculation amount and improve the speed of data analysis. Field tests showed that wavelet packet denoising technology and split-radix FFT algorithm have good effect.

Beginning with the method of whole path iterative ray-tracing and according to the positive definiteness of the coefficient matrix of the systems of linear equations, a symmetry block tridiagonal matrix was decomposed into the product of block bidiagonal triangular matrix and its transpose by means of Cholesky decomposition. Then an algorithm for solving systems of block bidiagonal triangular linear equations was given, which is not necessary to treat with the zero elements out of banded systems. A fast algorithm for solving the systems of symmetry block tridiagonal linear equations was deduced, which can quicken the speed of ray-tracing. Finally, the simulation based on this algorithm for ray-tracing in three dimensional media was carried out. Meanwhile, the segmentally-iterative ray-tracing method and banded method for solving the systems of block tridiagonal linear equations were compared in the same model mentioned above. The convergence condition was assumed that the L-2 norm summation for mk, 1 and mk, 2 in the whole ray path was limited in 10−6. And the calculating speeds of these methods were compared. The results show that the calculating speed of this algorithm is faster than that of conventional method and the calculated results are accurate enough. In addition, its precision can be controlled according to the requirement of ray-tracing

Based on Fermat’s principle, two-point ray tracing method was studied in three-dimensional structure. By means of first order Taylor’s incomplete series expansion (i.e. no expansion to the length of the ray), a symmetry block tridiagonal matrix equation set was deduced. Further, the positive definiteness of coefficient matrix was discussed, and the positive definiteness was accurately proved in a mathematical way. It assured that the algorithm was well-posed. Associated with iterative method, the solution to ray tracing can be got through step-by-step linearized iteration of the nonlinear problem. An algorithm of the whole path iterative ray tracing method in three-dimensional velocity structure was obtained. This method shows a clear and simple as well as explicit computation formula, which makes ray tracing computation easily applicable in practice. The correction vector is obtained through finding the solution to the positive definite block tridiagonal equation set, which ensures the method is robust convergence. This study offers a new kind of feasible and efficient ray tracing method for three dimensional seismic migration and tomography. Meanwhile, it also provides the prerequisite guarantee to design a fast algorithm.

On the basis of data of long period Rayleigh surface wave, we select 43 two-station paths which cover the eastern China thoroughly. By using the improved method of multi-filtration, we obtain the group velocity and amplitude spectrum, and then get attenuation factor for each paths. We employ Talentola inversion method to get local attenuation factor, and further invert the three-dimension Qβ image under the crust and upper mantle in the eastern Chinese continent. The Qβ image shows the following basic characters. There is correlation between the seismic activity and Qβ structure under the crust and upper mantle in North China region. The Yangtze block begins to collide with and subduct to the North China block from the southern border of the Qinling in the southern Shaanxi. In the large part of Yangtze quasi-platform appear an obvious high Qβ area at 88 km deep. In the east of Sichuan depression platform, the juncture of Sichun and Guizhou, and the Jiangnan block near the juncture of Guizhou and Hunan, the lateral variation of Qβ in the crust is little, and there is a high-Qβ layer no thinner than 40 km in the top mantle. In the Dian-Qian fold and fracture region between Yunnan and Guizhou, the vertical variation of Qβ at the region of the crust and upper mantle is little, there is a low-Qβ layer in the top mantle, about 40 km thick, low-Qβ layer of the upper mantle begins to appear at about 95 km deep. In the east of Yangtze quasi-platform and the central and eastern part of the South China fold system, the Moho is smooth, the lateral variation of Qβ in the crust is also little, low-Qβ layer of the upper mantle begins to appear at about 85 km deep.
