Defining a suitable soil tillage option that provides adequate soil physical conditions for optimum cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) productivity has not been adequately researched in southern Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate, in an Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo Distrófico (Acrisol or Hapludalf), three tillage methods - conventional (inverting) tillage, chiseling, and long-term no-tillage (without and with, additional soil compaction), as affecting soil hydro-physical properties and cassava yield, in southern Brazil. Undisturbed and disturbed soil samples were collected from row and interrow positions, from the soil surface down to 0.40 m depth to determine soil bulk density, degree of compaction, porosity, water retention, plant available water, air and water permeability, mechanical properties (compressibility and elasticity), and chemical properties. The yield of cassava storage roots was obtained at crop physiological maturity. Conventional (inverting) and chisel tillage of soil previously under long-term no-tillage increased soil macroporosity - a composition or capacity physical property – of the surface soil, but did not improve the functioning/intensity properties air and water permeability. Soil reconsolidation over a short-time significantly affects soil structural condition, and thus soil tillage is not needed to improve soil structure. Additional compaction on the no-till soil causes detrimental consequences on composition/capacity and functioning/intensity physical properties. Nonetheless, neither improvement of soil structure by tillage nor further compaction affects cassava storage root yield in the sandy loam soil. Therefore, no-tillage is the best management system, in which soil loosening is done only during furrowing for cassava-stem planting.

Sugarcane is one of the important energy crops grown globally. Despite the increased sugarcane productivity, the mechanization of sugarcane production has caused the modification of soil structure in different scales. A field study was therefore conducted for three growing seasons (2010 - 2013) to evaluate seasonal changes of soil physico-chemical and mechanical properties and crop yield under different soil management practices for sugarcane (Saccharum Oficinarum) production in southern Brazil. In 2010/2011, the experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design in three replications, consisting of no-tillage (NT), no-tillage + compaction (NTC), inverting conventional tillage (CT), and minimum tillage of chiseling (Chi) treatments. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from soil layers 0–10, 10–20, 20–40 and 40–60 cm for the determination of soil properties, and sugarcane yield was evaluated. Shortly after land preparation, soil tillage significantly reduced the BD and AWmax but increased the macropore volume. Three years after land preparation and continuous no-tillage, there was a significant reduction in soil BD, Ma, FC, PWP, AWmax, TN, Ks, and Ic while SOM and σp increased in the 0–10 cm surface layer. During linear deformation (h) in a soil sample, the variation of the void ratio with respect to deformation (dε/dh) and the respective variation of soil bulk density (dρ/dh) are identical only for a specific value of h. Consequently, if two compression curves are drawn for the same soil sample, one using ρ and the other using ε, there are differences in both the calculated precompression stress (σp) and compression index (Ic). In this study, we highlight the causes by a mathematical analysis and an experimental investigation, quantifying the differences in σp and Ic when using ε and ρ. σp and Ic were calculated for 103 compression curves of an ultisol and 193 of an oxisol. The σp (kPa) using ρ (σpρ) was greater than when using ε (σpε), and differences were rather independent of the soil type. The relations found by linear regression relating σpρ to σpε were σpρ=0.8186σpε+34.202 for the ultisol and σpρ=0.8878σpε+34.875 for the oxisol. In contrast, the used soil property (ρ or ε) as well as soil type affected Ic. Ic calculated using ρ was greater than when using ε in almost all (96%) of the cases for the ultisol, and in only 12% of the cases for the oxisol. For a wide range of ρ, evidence from this study indicated that the use of ρ overestimates σp when compared to the use of ε. RESUMO: À medida que uma amostra de solo sofre deformação linear (h), a variação do índice de vazios em relação à deformação (dε/dh) e da respectiva variação da densidade do solo (dρ/dh) são coincidentes somente para um único valor de h. Decorrente disso, verifica-se experimentalmente que, para a mesma amostra de solo, há diferenças, tanto na pressão de preconsolidação (σp) como no índice de compressão (Ic), se forem determinados a partir das duas curvas de compressão, uma a base da ρ e outra a base do ε. A análise matemática, seguida da investigação experimental deste estudo, evidencia as causas e quantifica as diferenças na σp e no Ic, devido ao uso do ε ou ρ. A σp e o Ic foram calculados em 103 curvas de compressão de um Argissolo e em 193 de um Latossolo. A σp (kPa) com o uso da ρ (σpρ) foi maior que a σp com o uso do ε (σpε), e as diferenças dependeram menos do tipo de solo. As relações encontradas por regressão foram σpρ=0,8186 σpε+34,202 para o Argissolo e σpρ=0,8878 σpε+34,875 para o Latossolo. Diferentemente, o Ic foi afetado pela propriedade usada (ρ ou ε) para descrever a deformação e pelo tipo de solo. O Ic calculado com o uso da ρ foi maior que quando calculado com o uso do ε em quase todos os casos (96%) no Argissolo e raramente (em 12% dos casos) no Latossolo. Para uma ampla faixa de ρ, as evidências deste estudo indicam que o uso da ρ superestima a σp em relação ao uso do ε.

Soil compression curve (CC) provides parameters to identify soil load-bearing capacity and susceptibility to compaction. An Excel add-in (ACC) incorporating graphical procedures for mathematical models for soil CC description and calculation of parameters was developed. By using the ACC, soil CC can be described by means of the Casagrande method, mathematically operationalized with the van Genuchten equation, with or without restrictions on its parameters, and by Dias Junior and Pierce method in its original form and also modified using the void ratio rather than soil bulk density. The ACC uses a single Excel spreadsheet for input and output data, in addition to a graphical interface and a tool for exporting editable charts. Compared to SAS statistical software, the ACC minimized the sum of squared residuals and estimated parameters of mathematical models with the same efficiency for 347 compression curves. The ACC programming script is available and can be modified or used as a framework for other programming projects.

A agregação pode sofrer alterações permanentes ou temporárias com variações cíclicas provocadas por práticas de manejo do solo e pelo crescimento das plantas. O estudo avaliou a variação temporal e espacial da estabilidade de agregados estáveis em água e a sua relação com o conteúdo de matéria orgânica em um Argissolo em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil. Os tratamentos avaliados foram quatro sistemas de preparo do solo para implantação de povoamento de Eucalyptus grandis: plantio direto; escarificação; escarificação seguida de gradagem e enxada rotativa. Amostras de solo foram coletadas na camada de 0,00-0,05 m para a determinação da densidade, da estabilidade dos agregados estáveis em água e do teor de matéria orgânica do solo. A escarificação, escarificação seguida de gradagem e enxada rotativa resultaram em menor estabilidade estrutural de agregados estáveis em água. Os efeitos negativos do preparo do solo sobre o Argissolo de textura franco arenosa são reduzidos após 12 meses, demonstrando sua capacidade em reestabelecer a estrutura e a agregação. Os diferentes preparos do solo avaliados não foram capazes de aumentar o teor de carbono orgânico, não influenciado no estado de agregação. O crescimento inicial do eucalipto foi favorecido com a intensificação do preparo do solo. Aggregation can suffer permanent or temporary changes to cyclical variations induced by management practices for soil and plant growth. The study evaluated the temporal and spatial variation of the stability of water stable aggregates and its relationship with the organic matter content in an Hapludalf in Santa Maria municipality, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The treatments were four tillage systems for deployment of Eucalyptus grandis : no-tillage, chisel, chisel tillage plus harrowing and rotary tiller. Soil samples were collected in the layer of 0.00 to 0.05 m for determination of the density, and stability in water of stable organic matter aggregates contents of the soil. Chisel, chisel tillage plus harrowing and rotary tiller resulted in lower structural stability of water stable aggregates. The negative effects of tillage on Hapludalf with sandy loam texture are reduced after 12 months, demonstrating its ability to restore the structure and aggregation. The soil tillage evaluated did not increase the carbon content and that was not influenced by the state of aggregation. The early growth of Eucalyptus was favored by the intensification of soil tillage.
