Search

To explain the well-known tension between cosmological parameter constraints obtained from the primary CMB and those drawn from galaxy cluster samples, we propose a possible explanation for the incompleteness of detected clusters are higher than estimated. We aim to search for galaxy groups and clusters with particularly extended surface brightness distributions by creating a new X-ray-selected catalog of extended galaxy clusters from the XMM-SERVS data, based on a dedicated source detection and characterization algorithm that is optimized for extended sources. Our state-of-the-art algorithm is composed of wavelet filtering, source detection, and characterization. We make a visual inspection of the optical image, and spatial distribution of galaxies within the same redshift layer to confirm the existence of clusters and estimate the cluster redshift with the spectroscopic and photometric redshifts of galaxies. The growth curve analysis is used to characterize the detections. We report a catalog of extended X-ray galaxy clusters detected from the XMM-SERVS data, named the XMM- SERVS X-ray eXtended Galaxy Cluster (XVXGC) catalog. It includes 141 cluster candidates. Specifically, there are 52 clusters previously identified as clusters with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) emission (class 3), 37 ones previously known as optical or infrared clusters but detected as X-ray clusters for the first time (class 2), and 52 identified as clusters for the first time (class 1). Compared with the class3 sample, the 'class1+2' sample is systematically fainter, and exhibits a flatter surface brightness profile. The median flux in [0.1-2.4]keV band for 'class1+2' and class3 sample is 2.336e-14 and 3.163e-14erg/s/cm2, respectively. Aims. We aim to characterize the gas properties in the cluster outskirts ($R_{500}R_{200}$) of the A3391/95 system and to compare them to predictions. Methods. We performed X-ray image and spectral analyses using the eROSITA PV data to assess the gas morphology and properties in the outskirts and the filaments in the directions of the previously detected Northern and Southern Filament of the A3391/95 system. We took particular care of the foreground. Results. In the filament-facing outskirts of A3391 and the Northern Clump, we find higher temperatures than typical cluster outskirts profiles, with a significance of $1.6-2.8\sigma$, suggesting heating due to their connections with the filaments. We confirm SB excess in the profiles of the Northern, Eastern, and Southern Filaments. From spectral analysis, we detect hot gas of ~1 keV for the Northern and Southern Filaments. The filament metallicities are below 10% solar metallicity and the $n_e$ range between 2.6 and $6.3\times10^{-5}~\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$. The characteristic properties of the Little Southern Clump (~1.5$R_{200}$ from A3395S in the Southern Filament) suggest that it is a small galaxy group. Excluding the LSC from the analysis of the Southern Filament decreases the gas density by 30%. This shows the importance of taking into account any clumps to avoid overestimation of the gas measurement in the outskirts and filament regions. Conclusions. The $n_e$ of the filaments are consistent with the WHIM properties as predicted by cosmological simulations, but the temperatures are higher, close to the upper WHIM temperature limit. As both filaments are short and located in a denser environment, stronger gravitational heating may be responsible for this temperature enhancement. Cold dark matter haloes are expected to be triaxial, and so appear elliptical in projection. We use weak gravitational lensing from the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) component of the Ultraviolet-Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS) to measure the ellipticity of the dark matter haloes around Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (DR7) and from the CMASS and LOWZ samples of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), assuming their major axes are aligned with the stellar light. We find that DR7 LRGs with masses $M \sim 2.7\times10^{13} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}/h$ have halo ellipticities $e=0.46\pm0.10$. Expressed as a fraction of the galaxy ellipticity, we find $f_h = 2.2\pm0.6$. For BOSS LRGs, the detection is of marginal significance: $e = 0.20\pm0.10$ and $f_h=0.7\pm0.7$. These results are in agreement with other measurements of halo ellipticity from weak lensing and, taken together with previous results, suggest an increase of halo ellipticity of $0.10\pm0.06$ per decade in halo mass. We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) weak gravitational lensing study of nine distant and massive galaxy clusters with redshifts $1.0 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.7$ ($z_\mathrm{median} = 1.4$) and Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) detection significance $\xi > 6.0$ from the South Pole Telescope Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) survey. We measured weak lensing galaxy shapes in HST/ACS F606W and F814W images and used additional observations from HST/WFC3 in F110W and VLT/FORS2 in $U_\mathrm{HIGH}$ to preferentially select background galaxies at $z\gtrsim 1.8$, achieving a high purity. We combined recent redshift estimates from the CANDELS/3D-HST and HUDF fields to infer an improved estimate of the source redshift distribution. We measured weak lensing masses by fitting the tangential reduced shear profiles with spherical Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) models. We obtained the largest lensing mass in our sample for the cluster SPT-CLJ2040$-$4451, thereby confirming earlier results that suggest a high lensing mass of this cluster compared to X-ray and SZ mass measurements. Combining our weak lensing mass constraints with results obtained by previous studies for lower redshift clusters, we extended the calibration of the scaling relation between the unbiased SZ detection significance $\zeta$ and the cluster mass for the SPT-SZ survey out to higher redshifts. We found that the mass scale inferred from our highest redshift bin ($1.2 < z < 1.7$) is consistent with an extrapolation of constraints derived from lower redshifts, albeit with large statistical uncertainties. Thus, our results show a similar tendency as found in previous studies, where the cluster mass scale derived from the weak lensing data is lower than the mass scale expected in a Planck $\nu\Lambda$CDM (i.e. $\nu$ $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter) cosmology given the SPT-SZ cluster number counts., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures + appendix (9 pages, 9 figures); accepted for publication in A&A

The Astropy Project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly-developed Python packages that provide commonly needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy Project is the core package $\texttt{astropy}$, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we summarize key features in the core package as of the recent major release, version 5.0, and provide major updates for the Project. We then discuss supporting a broader ecosystem of interoperable packages, including connections with several astronomical observatories and missions. We also revisit the future outlook of the Astropy Project and the current status of Learn Astropy. UNIONS is an ongoing collaboration that will provide the largest deep photometric survey of the Northern sky in four optical bands to date. As part of this collaboration, CFIS is taking $r$-band data with an average seeing of 0.65 arcsec, which is complete to magnitude 24.5 and thus ideal for weak-lensing studies. We perform the first weak-lensing analysis of CFIS $r$-band data over an area spanning 1700 deg$^2$ of the sky. We create a catalogue with measured shapes for 40 million galaxies, corresponding to an effective density of 6.8 galaxies per square arcminute, and demonstrate a low level of systematic biases. This work serves as the basis for further cosmological studies using the full UNIONS survey of 4800 deg$^2$ when completed. Here we present ShapePipe, a newly developed weak-lensing pipeline. This pipeline makes use of state-of-the-art methods such as Ngmix for accurate galaxy shape measurement. Shear calibration is performed with metacalibration. We carry out extensive validation tests on the Point Spread Function (PSF), and on the galaxy shapes. In addition, we create realistic image simulations to validate the estimated shear. We quantify the PSF model accuracy and show that the level of systematics is low as measured by the PSF residuals. Their effect on the shear two-point correlation function is sub-dominant compared to the cosmological contribution on angular scales <100 arcmin. The additive shear bias is below 5x$10^{-4}$, and the residual multiplicative shear bias is at most $10^{-3}$ as measured on image simulations. Using COSEBIs we show that there are no significant B-modes present in second-order shear statistics. We present convergence maps and see clear correlations of the E-mode with known cluster positions. We measure the stacked tangential shear profile around Planck clusters at a significance higher than $4\sigma$.

Using {\it Herschel}-SPIRE imaging and the Canada-France Imaging Survey (CFIS) Low Surface Brightness data products from the Ultraviolet Near-Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS), we present a cross-correlation between the cosmic far-infrared background and cosmic optical background fluctuations. The cross-spectrum is measured for two cases: all galaxies are kept in the images; or all individually-detected galaxies are masked to produce `background' maps. We report the detection of the cross-correlation signal at $\gtrsim 18\,\sigma$ ($\gtrsim 14\,\sigma$ for the background map). The part of the optical brightness variations that are correlated with the submm emission translates to an rms brightness of $\simeq 32.5\,{\rm mag}\,{\rm arcsec}^{-2}$ in the $r$ band, a level normally unreachable for individual sources. A critical issue is determining what fraction of the cross-power spectrum might be caused by emission from Galactic cirrus. For one of the fields, the Galactic contamination is 10 times higher than the extragalactic signal; however, for the other fields, the contamination is around 20~per cent. An additional discriminant is that the cross-power spectrum is of the approximate form $P(k)\propto 1/k$, much shallower than that of Galactic cirrus. We interpret the results in a halo-model framework, which shows good agreement with independent measurements for the scalings of star-formation rates in galaxies. The approach presented in this study holds great promise for future surveys such as FYST/CCAT-prime combined with {\it Euclid} or the Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST), which will enable a detailed exploration of the evolution of star formation in galaxies., Comment: 40 pages, 26 figures, published in MNRAS

There is a known tension between cosmological parameter constraints obtained from the primary CMB and those from galaxy cluster samples. One possible explanation could be certain types of groups or clusters of galaxy have been missed in the past. We aim to search for galaxy groups and clusters with particularly extended surface brightness distributions, by creating a new X-ray selected catalog of extended galaxy clusters from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, using a dedicated algorithm optimized for extended sources. Through extensive simulations, the detection efficiency and sample purity are investigated. Previous cluster catalogs in X-ray and other wave-bands, as well as spectroscopic and photometric redshifts of galaxies are used for the cluster identification. We report a catalog of galaxy clusters at high galactic latitude based on the ROSAT All-sky Survey, named as RXGCC, which includes 944 groups and clusters. Out of it, 641 clusters have been identified through ICM emission previously (Bronze), 154 known optical and infrared clusters are detected as X-ray clusters for the first time (Silver), and 149 identified as clusters for the first time (Gold). Based on 200 simulations, the contamination ratio of the detections which were identified as clusters by ICM emission, and the detections which were identified as optical and infrared clusters in previous work is 0.008 and 0.100, respectively. Compared with Bronze sample, the Gold+Silver sample is less luminous, less massive, and has a flatter surface brightness profile. Specifically, the median flux in [0.1-2.4]keV band for Gold+Silver and Bronze sample is 2.496e-12 erg/s/cm^2 and 4.955e-12 erg/s/cm^2, respectively. The median slope of cluster profile is 0.76 and 0.83 for Gold+Silver and Bronze sample, respectively. SRG/eROSITA PV observations revealed the A3391/95 cluster system and the Northern Clump (MCXC J0621.7-5242 galaxy cluster) are aligning along a cosmic filament in soft X-rays, similarly to what has been seen in simulations before. We aim to understand the dynamical state of the Northern Clump as it enters the atmosphere ($3\times R_{200}$) of A3391. We analyzed joint eROSITA, XMM-Newton, and Chandra observations to probe the morphological, thermal, and chemical properties of the Northern Clump from its center out to a radius of 988 kpc ($R_{200}$). We utilized the ASKAP/EMU radio data, DECam optical image, and Planck y-map to study the influence of the WAT radio source on the Northern Clump central ICM. From the Magneticum simulation, we identified an analog of the A3391/95 system along with an infalling group resembling the Northern Clump. The Northern Clump is a WCC cluster centered on a WAT radio galaxy. The gas temperature over $0.2-0.5R_{500}$ is $k_BT_{500}=1.99\pm0.04$ keV. We employed the $M-T$ scaling relation and obtained a mass estimate of $M_{500}=(7.68\pm0.43)\times10^{13}M_{\odot}$ and $R_{500}=(636\pm12)$ kpc. Its atmosphere has a boxy shape and deviates from spherical symmetry. We identify a southern surface brightness edge, likely caused by subsonic motion relative to the filament gas. At $\sim\! R_{500}$, the southern atmosphere appears to be 42% hotter than its northern atmosphere. We detect a downstream tail pointing toward the north with a projected length of $\sim318$ kpc, plausibly the result of ram pressure stripping. We present measurements of the radial gravitational acceleration around isolated galaxies, comparing the expected gravitational acceleration given the baryonic matter with the observed gravitational acceleration, using weak lensing measurements from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. These measurements extend the radial acceleration relation (RAR) by 2 decades into the low-acceleration regime beyond the outskirts of the observable galaxy. We compare our RAR measurements to the predictions of two modified gravity (MG) theories: MOND and Verlinde's emergent gravity. We find that the measured RAR agrees well with the MG predictions. In addition, we find a difference of at least $6\sigma$ between the RARs of early- and late-type galaxies (split by S\'{e}rsic index and $u-r$ colour) with the same stellar mass. Current MG theories involve a gravity modification that is independent of other galaxy properties, which would be unable to explain this behaviour. The difference might be explained if only the early-type galaxies have significant ($M_{gas} \approx M_*$) circumgalactic gaseous haloes. The observed behaviour is also expected in $\Lambda$CDM models where the galaxy-to-halo mass relation depends on the galaxy formation history. We find that MICE, a $\Lambda$CDM simulation with hybrid halo occupation distribution modelling and abundance matching, reproduces the observed RAR but significantly differs from BAHAMAS, a hydrodynamical cosmological galaxy formation simulation. Our results are sensitive to the amount of circumgalactic gas; current observational constraints indicate that the resulting corrections are likely moderate. Measurements of the lensing RAR with future cosmological surveys will be able to further distinguish between MG and $\Lambda$CDM models if systematic uncertainties in the baryonic mass distribution around galaxies are reduced., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, published in A&A

We constrain the redshift dependence of gas pressure bias $\left\langle b_{y} P_{\mathrm{e}}\right\rangle$ (bias-weighted average electron pressure), which characterises the thermodynamics of intergalactic gas, through a combination of cross-correlations between galaxy positions and the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect, as well as galaxy positions and the gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The galaxy sample is from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). The tSZ $y$ map and the CMB lensing map are from the {\textit{Planck}} 2015 and 2018 data releases, respectively. The measurements are performed in five redshift bins with $z\lesssim1$. With these measurements, combining galaxy-tSZ and galaxy-CMB lensing cross-correlations allows us to break the degeneracy between galaxy bias and gas pressure bias, and hence constrain them simultaneously. In all redshift bins, the best-fit values of $\bpe$ are at a level of $\sim 0.3\, \mathrm{meV/cm^3}$ and increase slightly with redshift. The galaxy bias is consistent with unity in all the redshift bins. Our results are not sensitive to the non-linear details of the cross-correlation, which are smoothed out by the {\textit{Planck}} beam. Our measurements are in agreement with previous measurements as well as with theoretical predictions. We also show that our conclusions are not changed when CMB lensing is replaced by galaxy lensing, which shows the consistency of the two lensing signals despite their radically different redshift ranges. We present measurements of $f_h$, the ratio of the aligned components of the projected halo and galaxy ellipticities, for a sample of central galaxies using weak gravitational lensing data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). Using a lens galaxy shape estimation that is more sensitive to outer galaxy regions, we find $f_{\rm h}=0.50\pm0.20$ for our full sample and $f_{\rm h}=0.55\pm0.19$ for an intrinsically red (and therefore higher stellar-mass) sub-sample, rejecting the hypothesis of round halos and/or galaxies being un-aligned with their parent halo at $2.5\sigma$ and $2.9\sigma$, respectively. We quantify the 93.4% purity of our central galaxy sample using numerical simulations and overlapping spectroscopy from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly survey. This purity ensures that the interpretation of our measurements is not complicated by the presence of a significant fraction of satellite galaxies. Restricting our central galaxy ellipticity measurement to the inner isophotes, we find $f_{\rm h}=0.34\pm0.17$ for our red sub-sample, suggesting that the outer galaxy regions are more aligned with their dark matter halos compared to the inner regions. Our results are in agreement with previous studies and suggest that lower mass halos are rounder and/or less aligned with their host galaxy than samples of more massive galaxies, studied in galaxy groups and clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a new method for the mitigation of observational systematic effects in angular galaxy clustering via corrective random galaxy catalogues. Real and synthetic galaxy data, from the Kilo Degree Survey's (KiDS) 4$^{\rm{th}}$ Data Release (KiDS-$1000$) and the Full-sky Lognormal Astro-fields Simulation Kit (FLASK) package respectively, are used to train self-organising maps (SOMs) to learn the multivariate relationships between observed galaxy number density and up to six systematic-tracer variables, including seeing, Galactic dust extinction, and Galactic stellar density. We then create `organised' randoms, i.e. random galaxy catalogues with spatially variable number densities, mimicking the learnt systematic density modes in the data. Using realistically biased mock data, we show that these organised randoms consistently subtract spurious density modes from the two-point angular correlation function $w(\vartheta)$, correcting biases of up to $12\sigma$ in the mean clustering amplitude to as low as $0.1\sigma$, over a high signal-to-noise angular range of 7-100 arcmin. Their performance is also validated for angular clustering cross-correlations in a bright, flux-limited subset of KiDS-$1000$, comparing against an analogous sample constructed from highly-complete spectroscopic redshift data. Each organised random catalogue object is a `clone' carrying the properties of a real galaxy, and is distributed throughout the survey footprint according to the parent galaxy's position in systematics-space. Thus, sub-sample randoms are readily derived from a single master random catalogue via the same selection as applied to the real galaxies. Our method is expected to improve in performance with increased survey area, galaxy number density, and systematic contamination, making organised randoms extremely promising for current and future clustering analyses of faint samples., Comment: 19 pages (7 appendix pages), 12 figures (8 appendix figures), accepted to A&A

We present constraints on extensions to the flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model by varying the spatial curvature $\Omega_K$, the sum of the neutrino masses $\sum m_\nu$, the dark energy equation of state parameter $w$, and the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity $f_{R0}$ parameter. With the combined $3\times2$pt measurements of cosmic shear from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), galaxy clustering from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and galaxy-galaxy lensing from the overlap between KiDS-1000, BOSS, and the spectroscopic 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS), we find results that are fully consistent with a flat $\Lambda$CDM model with $\Omega_K=0.011^{+0.054}_{-0.057}$, $\sum m_\nu<1.76$ eV (95% CL), and $w=-0.99^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$. The $f_{R0}$ parameter is unconstrained in our fully non-linear $f(R)$ cosmic shear analysis. Considering three different model selection criteria, we find no clear preference for either the fiducial flat $\Lambda$CDM model or any of the considered extensions. Besides extensions to the flat $\Lambda$CDM parameter space, we also explore restrictions to common subsets of the flat $\Lambda$CDM parameter space by fixing the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum to the Planck best-fit value, as well as adding external data from supernovae and lensing of the CMB. Neither the beyond-$\Lambda$CDM models nor the imposed restrictions explored in this analysis are able to resolve the $\sim 3\sigma$ tension in $S_8$ between the $3\times2$pt constraints and Planck, with the exception of $w$CDM, where the $S_8$ tension is resolved. The tension in the $w$CDM case persists, however, when considering the joint $S_8$-$w$ parameter space. The joint flat $\Lambda$CDM CMB lensing and $3\times2$pt analysis is found to yield tight constraints on $\Omega_{\rm m}=0.307^{+0.008}_{-0.013}$, $\sigma_8=0.769^{+0.022}_{-0.010}$, and $S_8=0.779^{+0.013}_{-0.013}$., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted in A&A. Cosmological simulations predict that galaxies are embedded into triaxial dark matter haloes, which appear approximately elliptical in projection. Weak gravitational lensing allows us to constrain these halo shapes and thereby test the nature of dark matter. Weak lensing has already provided robust detections of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scales of groups and clusters, whereas results for galaxies have been somewhat inconclusive. Here we combine data from five surveys (NGVSLenS, KiDS/KV450, CFHTLenS, CS82, and RCSLenS) in order to tighten observational constraints on galaxy-scale halo ellipticity for photometrically selected lens samples. We constrain $f_\rm{h}$, the average ratio between the aligned component of the halo ellipticity and the ellipticity of the light distribution, finding $f_\rm{h}=0.303^{+0.080}_{-0.079}$ for red lenses and $f_\rm{h}=0.217^{+0.160}_{-0.159}$ for blue lenses when assuming elliptical NFW density profiles and a linear scaling between halo ellipticity and galaxy ellipticity. Our constraints for red galaxies constitute the currently most significant ($3.8\sigma$) systematics-corrected detection of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scale of galaxies. Our results are in good agreement with expectations from the Millennium Simulation that apply the same analysis scheme and incorporate models for galaxy-halo misalignment. Assuming these misalignment models and the analysis assumptions stated above are correct, our measurements imply an average dark matter halo ellipticity for the studied red galaxy samples of $\langle|\epsilon_\rm{h}|\rangle=0.174\pm 0.046$, where $|\epsilon_{h}|=(1-q)/(1+q)$ relates to the ratio $q=b/a$ of the minor and major axes of the projected mass distribution. We present a sample of luminous red-sequence galaxies to study the large-scale structure in the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. The selected galaxies are defined by a red-sequence template, in the form of a data-driven model of the colour-magnitude relation conditioned on redshift. In this work, the red-sequence template is built using the broad-band optical+near infrared photometry of KiDS-VIKING and the overlapping spectroscopic data sets. The selection process involves estimating the red-sequence redshifts, assessing the purity of the sample, and estimating the underlying redshift distributions of redshift bins. After performing the selection, we mitigate the impact of survey properties on the observed number density of galaxies by assigning photometric weights to the galaxies. We measure the angular two-point correlation function of the red galaxies in four redshift bins, and constrain the large scale bias of our red-sequence sample assuming a fixed $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We find consistent linear biases for two luminosity-threshold samples (dense and luminous). We present cosmological constraints from a cosmic shear analysis of the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), doubling the survey area with nine-band optical and near-infrared photometry with respect to previous KiDS analyses. Adopting a spatially flat $\Lambda$CDM model, we find $S_8 = \sigma_8 (\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5} = 0.759^{+0.024}_{-0.021}$ for our fiducial analysis, which is in $3\sigma$ tension with the prediction of the Planck Legacy analysis of the cosmic microwave background. We compare our fiducial COSEBIs (Complete Orthogonal Sets of E/B-Integrals) analysis with complementary analyses of the two-point shear correlation function and band power spectra, finding results to be in excellent agreement. We investigate the sensitivity of all three statistics to a number of measurement, astrophysical, and modelling systematics, finding our $S_8$ constraints to be robust and dominated by statistical errors. Our cosmological analysis of different divisions of the data pass the Bayesian internal consistency tests, with the exception of the second tomographic bin. We present a joint cosmological analysis of weak gravitational lensing observations from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), with redshift-space galaxy clustering observations from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and galaxy-galaxy lensing observations from the overlap between KiDS-1000, BOSS and the spectroscopic 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS). This combination of large-scale structure probes breaks the degeneracies between cosmological parameters for individual observables, resulting in a constraint on the structure growth parameter $S_8=\sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3} = 0.766^{+0.020}_{-0.014}$, that has the same overall precision as that reported by the full-sky cosmic microwave background observations from Planck. The recovered $S_8$ amplitude is low, however, by $8.3 \pm 2.6$ % relative to Planck. This result builds from a series of KiDS-1000 analyses where we validate our methodology with variable depth mock galaxy surveys, our lensing calibration with image simulations and null-tests, and our optical-to-near-infrared redshift calibration with multi-band mock catalogues and a spectroscopic-photometric clustering analysis. The systematic uncertainties identified by these analyses are folded through as nuisance parameters in our cosmological analysis. Inspecting the offset between the marginalised posterior distributions, we find that the $S_8$-difference with Planck is driven by a tension in the matter fluctuation amplitude parameter, $\sigma_8$. We present weak lensing shear catalogues from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey, KiDS-1000, spanning 1006 square degrees of deep and high-resolution imaging. Our `gold-sample' of galaxies, with well-calibrated photometric redshift distributions, consists of 21 million galaxies with an effective number density of $6.17$ galaxies per square arcminute. We quantify the accuracy of the spatial, temporal, and flux-dependent point-spread function (PSF) model, verifying that the model meets our requirements to induce less than a $0.1\sigma$ change in the inferred cosmic shear constraints on the clustering cosmological parameter $S_8 = \sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}$. Through a series of two-point null-tests, we validate the shear estimates, finding no evidence for significant non-lensing B-mode distortions in the data. The PSF residuals are detected in the highest-redshift bins, originating from object selection and/or weight bias. The amplitude is, however, shown to be sufficiently low and within our stringent requirements. With a shear-ratio null-test, we verify the expected redshift scaling of the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal around luminous red galaxies. We simultaneously present constraints on the stellar-to-halo mass relation for central and satellite galaxies through a weak lensing analysis of spectroscopically classified galaxies. Using overlapping data from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), and the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA), we find that satellite galaxies are hosted by halo masses that are $0.53 \pm 0.39$ dex (68\% confidence, $3\sigma$ detection) smaller than those of central galaxies of the same stellar mass (for a stellar mass of $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) = 10.6$). This is consistent with galaxy formation models, whereby infalling satellite galaxies are preferentially stripped of their dark matter. We find consistent results with similar uncertainties when comparing constraints from a standard azimuthally averaged galaxy-galaxy lensing analysis and a two-dimensional likelihood analysis of the full shear field. As the latter approach is somewhat biased due to the lens incompleteness and as it does not provide any improvement to the precision when applied to actual data, we conclude that stacked tangential shear measurements are best-suited for studies of the galaxy-halo connection., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We use KiDS weak lensing data to measure variations in mean halo mass as a function of several key galaxy properties (namely: stellar colour, specific star formation rate, Sersic index, and effective radius) for a volume-limited sample of GAMA galaxies in a narrow stellar mass range ($M_* \sim 2$--$5 \times 10^{10}$ Msol). This mass range is particularly interesting, inasmuch as it is where bimodalities in galaxy properties are most pronounced, and near to the break in both the galaxy stellar mass function and the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR). In this narrow mass range, we find that both size and Sersic index are better predictors of halo mass than either colour or SSFR, with the data showing a slight preference for Sersic index. In other words, we find that mean halo mass is more tightly correlated with galaxy structure than either past star formation history or current star formation rate. Our results lead to an approximate lower bound on the dispersion in halo masses among $\log M_* \approx {10.5}$ galaxies: we find that the dispersion is $\gtrsim 0.3$ dex. This would imply either that offsets from the mean SHMR are closely coupled to size/structure, or that the dispersion in the SHMR is larger than past results have suggested. In this work we study the shape of the projected surface mass density distribution of galaxy clusters using weak-lensing stacking techniques. In particular, we constrain the average aligned component of the projected ellipticity, $\epsilon$, for a sample of redMaPPer clusters ($0.1 \leq z < 0.4$). We consider six different proxies for the cluster orientation and measure $\epsilon$ for three ranges of projected distances from the cluster centres. The mass distribution in the inner region (up to $700\,$kpc) is better traced by the cluster galaxies with a higher membership probability, while the outer region (from $700\,$kpc up to $5\,$Mpc) is better traced by the inclusion of less probable galaxy cluster members. The fitted ellipticity in the inner region is $\epsilon = 0.21 \pm 0.04$, in agreement with previous estimates. We also study the relation between $\epsilon$ and the cluster mean redshift and richness. By splitting the sample in two redshift ranges according to the median redshift, we obtain larger $\epsilon$ values for clusters at higher redshifts, consistent with the expectation from simulations. In addition, we obtain higher ellipticity values in the outer region of clusters at low redshifts. The physics of gravity on cosmological scales affects both the rate of assembly of large-scale structure, and the gravitational lensing of background light through this cosmic web. By comparing the amplitude of these different observational signatures, we can construct tests that can distinguish general relativity from its potential modifications. We used the latest weak gravitational lensing dataset from the Kilo-Degree Survey, KiDS-1000, in conjunction with overlapping galaxy spectroscopic redshift surveys BOSS and 2dFLenS, to perform the most precise existing amplitude-ratio test. We measured the associated E_G statistic with 15-20% errors, in five dz = 0.1 tomographic redshift bins in the range 0.2 < z < 0.7, on projected scales up to 100 Mpc/h. The scale-independence and redshift-dependence of these measurements are consistent with the theoretical expectation of general relativity in a Universe with matter density Omega_m = 0.27 +/- 0.04. Several semi-analytic models (SAMs) try to explain how galaxies form, evolve and interact inside the dark matter large-scale structure. These SAMs can be tested by comparing their predictions for galaxy-galaxy-galaxy-lensing (G3L), which is weak gravitational lensing around galaxy pairs, with observations. We evaluate the SAMs by Henriques et al. (2015; H15) and by Lagos et al. (2012; L12), implemented in the Millennium Run, by comparing their predictions for G3L to observations at smaller scales than previous studies and also for pairs of lens galaxies from different populations. We compare the G3L signal predicted by the SAMs to measurements in the overlap of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA), the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), and the VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy survey (VIKING), splitting lens galaxies into two colour and five stellar-mass samples. Using an improved G3L estimator, we measure the three-point correlation of the matter distribution for mixed lens pairs with galaxies from different samples, and unmixed lens pairs with galaxies from the same sample. Predictions by the H15 SAM agree with the observations for all colour-selected and all but one stellar-mass-selected sample with 95% confidence. Deviations occur for lenses with stellar masses below $9.5h^{-2}\mathrm{M}_\odot$ at scales below $0.2h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$. Predictions by the L12 SAM for stellar-mass selected samples and red galaxies are significantly higher than observed, while the predicted signal for blue galaxy pairs is too low. The L12 SAM predicts more pairs of small stellar-mass and red galaxies than the H15 SAM and the observations, as well as fewer pairs of blue galaxies. Likely explanations are different treatments of environmental effects by the SAMs and different models of the initial mass function. We present cosmological constraints from a joint cosmic shear analysis of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KV450) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES-Y1), conducted using Complete Orthogonal Sets of E/B-Integrals (COSEBIs). With COSEBIs we isolate any B-modes which have a non-cosmic shear origin and demonstrate the robustness of our cosmological E-mode analysis as no significant B-modes are detected. We highlight how COSEBIs are fairly insensitive to the amplitude of the non-linear matter power spectrum at high $k$-scales, mitigating the uncertain impact of baryon feedback in our analysis. COSEBIs, therefore, allow us to utilise additional small-scale information, improving the DES-Y1 joint constraints on $S_8=\sigma_8(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5}$ and $\Omega_{\rm m}$ by $20\%$. Adopting a flat $\Lambda$CDM model we find $S_8=0.755^{+0.019}_{-0.021}$, which is in $3.2\sigma$ tension with the Planck Legacy analysis of the cosmic microwave background., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 15 pages, 7 figures

We present a weak lensing detection of filamentary structures in the cosmic web, combining data from the Kilo-Degree Survey, the Red Cluster Sequence Lensing Survey and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey. The line connecting luminous red galaxies with a separation of $3 - 5\, h^{-1}\text{Mpc}$ is chosen as a proxy for the location of filaments. We measure the average weak lensing shear around $\sim$11,000 candidate filaments selected in this way from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. After nulling the shear induced by the dark matter haloes around each galaxy, we report a $3.4\,\sigma$ detection of an anisotropic shear signal from the matter that connects them. Adopting a filament density profile, motivated from $N$-body simulations, the average density at the centre of these filamentary structures is found to be $15 \pm 4$ times the critical density., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Intrinsic galaxy alignments are a source of bias for weak lensing measurements as well as a tool for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. In this work, we measure the alignment of shapes of satellite galaxies, in galaxy groups, with respect to the brightest group galaxy (BGG), as well as alignments of the BGG shape with the satellite positions, using the highly complete Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey and deep imaging from the Kilo Degree Survey. We control systematic errors with dedicated image simulations and measure accurate shapes using the DEIMOS shape measurement method. We find a significant satellite radial alignment signal, which vanishes at large separations from the BGG. We do not identify any strong trends of the signal with galaxy absolute magnitude or group mass. The alignment signal is dominated by red satellites. We also find that the outer regions of galaxies are aligned more strongly than their inner regions, by varying the radial weight employed during the shape measurement process. This behaviour is evident for both red and blue satellites. BGGs are also found to be aligned with satellite positions, with this alignment being stronger when considering the innermost satellites, using red BGGs and the shape of the outer region of the BGG. We present the curation and verification of a new combined optical and near infrared dataset for cosmology and astrophysics, derived from the combination of $ugri$-band imaging from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) and $ZY\!J\!H\!K_{\rm s}$-band imaging from the VISTA Kilo degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey. This dataset is unrivaled in cosmological imaging surveys due to its combination of area ($458$ deg$^2$ before masking), depth ($r\le25$), and wavelength coverage ($ugriZY\!J\!H\!K_{\rm s}$). The combination of survey depth, area, and (most importantly) wavelength coverage allows significant reductions in systematic uncertainties (i.e. reductions of between 10 and 60\% in bias, outlier rate, and scatter) in photometric-to-spectroscopic redshift comparisons, compared to the optical-only case at photo-$z$ above $0.7$. The complementarity between our optical and NIR surveys means that over $80\%$ of our sources, across all photo-$z$, have significant detections (i.e. not upper limits) in our $8$ reddest bands. We derive photometry, photo-$z$, and stellar masses for all sources in the survey, and verify these data products against existing spectroscopic galaxy samples. We demonstrate the fidelity of our higher-level data products by constructing the survey stellar mass functions in 8 volume-complete redshift bins. We find that these photometrically derived mass functions provide excellent agreement with previous mass evolution studies derived using spectroscopic surveys. Exploiting the full statistical power of future cosmic shear surveys will necessitate improvements to the accuracy with which the gravitational lensing signal is measured. We present a framework for calibrating shear with image simulations that demonstrates the importance of including realistic correlations between galaxy morphology, size and more importantly, photometric redshifts. This realism is essential so that selection and shape measurement biases can be calibrated accurately for a tomographic cosmic shear analysis. We emulate Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) observations of the COSMOS field using morphological information from {\it Hubble} Space Telescope imaging, faithfully reproducing the measured galaxy properties from KiDS observations of the same field. We calibrate our shear measurements from lensfit, and find through a range of sensitivity tests that lensfit is robust and unbiased within the allowed 2 per cent tolerance of our study. Our results show that the calibration has to be performed by selecting the tomographic samples in the simulations, consistent with the actual cosmic shear analysis, because the joint distributions of galaxy properties are found to vary with redshift. Ignoring this redshift variation could result in misestimating the shear bias by an amount that exceeds the allowed tolerance. To improve the calibration for future cosmic shear analyses, it will be essential to also correctly account for the measurement of photometric redshifts, which requires simulating multi-band observations., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures and 2 tables. We analyse three public cosmic shear surveys; the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-450), the Dark Energy Survey (DES-SV) and the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). Adopting the COSEBIs statistic to cleanly and completely separate the lensing E-modes from the non-lensing B-modes, we detect B-modes in KiDS-450 and CFHTLenS at the level of about 2.7 $\sigma$. For DES- SV we detect B-modes at the level of 2.8 $\sigma$ in a non-tomographic analysis, increasing to a 5.5 $\sigma$ B-mode detection in a tomographic analysis. In order to understand the origin of these detected B-modes we measure the B-mode signature of a range of different simulated systematics including PSF leakage, random but correlated PSF modelling errors, camera-based additive shear bias and photometric redshift selection bias. We show that any correlation between photometric-noise and the relative orientation of the galaxy to the point-spread-function leads to an ellipticity selection bias in tomographic analyses. This work therefore introduces a new systematic for future lensing surveys to consider. We find that the B-modes in DES-SV appear similar to a superposition of the B-mode signatures from all of the systematics simulated. Some indications for tension have long been identified between cosmological constraints obtained from galaxy clusters and primary CMB measurements. Typically, assuming the matter density and fluctuations, as parameterized with Omega_m and sigma_8, estimated from CMB measurements, many more clusters are expected than those actually observed. One possible explanation could be that certain types of galaxy groups or clusters were missed in samples constructed in previous surveys, resulting in a higher incompleteness than estimated. We aim to determine if a hypothetical class of very extended, low surface brightness, galaxy groups or clusters have been missed in previous X-ray cluster surveys based on the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). We applied a dedicated source detection algorithm sensitive also to more unusual group or cluster surface brightness distributions. We found many known but also a number of new group candidates, which are not included in any previous X-ray / SZ cluster catalogs. In this paper, we present a pilot sample of 13 very extended groups discovered in the RASS at positions where no X-ray source has been detected previously and with clear optical counterparts. The X-ray fluxes of at least 5 of these are above the nominal flux-limits of previous RASS cluster catalogs. They have low mass ($10^{13} - 10^{14} M_{\odot}$; i.e., galaxy groups), are at low redshift (z<0.08), and exhibit flatter surface brightness distributions than usual. We demonstrate that galaxy groups were missed in previous RASS surveys, possibly due to the flat surface brightness distributions of this potential new population. Analysis of the full sample will show if this might have a significant effect on previous cosmological parameter constraints based on RASS cluster surveys. We report on the discovery of a dramatic X-ray spectral variability event observed in a $z\sim 1$ broad line type-1 QSO. The XMM-Newton spectrum from the year 2000 is characterized by an unobscured power-law spectrum with photon index of $\Gamma\sim 2$, a column density of $N_{\mathrm{H}}\sim 5\times 10^{20}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, and no prominent reflection component. Five years later, Chandra captured the source in a heavily-obscured, reflection-dominated state. The observed X-ray spectral variability could be caused by a Compton-thick cloud with $N_{\mathrm{H}}\sim 2\times 10^{24}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ eclipsing the direct emission of the hot corona, implying an extreme $N_{\mathrm{H}}$ variation never before observed in a type-1 QSO. An alternative scenario is a corona that switched off in between the observations. In addition, both explanations require a significant change of the X-ray luminosity prior to the obscuration or fading of the corona and/or a change of the relative geometry of the source/reflector system. Dramatic X-ray spectral variability of this kind could be quite common in type-1 QSOs, considering the relatively few datasets in which such an event could have been identified. Our analysis implies that there may be a population of type-1 QSOs which are Compton-thick in the X-rays when observed at any given time., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to be published in MNRAS

We present the first "clipped" cosmic shear measurement using data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-450). "Clipping" transformations suppress the signal from the highest density, non-linear regions of cosmological fields. We demonstrate that these transformations improve constraints on $S_8=\sigma_8(\Omega_{\rm{m}}/0.3)^{0.5}$ when used in combination with conventional two-point statistics. For the KiDS-450 data, we find that the combined measurements improve the constraints on $S_8$ by 17%, compared to shear correlation functions alone. We determine the expectation value of the clipped shear correlation function using a suite of numerical simulations, and develop methodology to mitigate the impact of masking and shot noise. Future improvements in numerical simulations and mass reconstruction methodology will permit the precise calibration of clipped cosmic shear statistics such that clipping can become a standard tool in weak lensing analyses., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures. We study projected underdensities in the cosmic galaxy density field known as 'troughs', and their overdense counterparts, which we call 'ridges'. We identify these regions using a bright sample of foreground galaxies from the photometric Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), specifically selected to mimic the spectroscopic Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA). Using background galaxies from KiDS, we measure the weak gravitational lensing profiles of the troughs/ridges. We quantify the amplitude of their lensing strength $A$ as a function of galaxy density percentile rank $P$ and galaxy overdensity $\delta$, and find that the skewness in the galaxy density distribution is reflected in the total mass distribution measured by weak lensing. We interpret our results using the mock galaxy catalogue from the Marenostrum Institut de Ci\`encies de l'Espai (MICE) simulation, and find a good agreement with our observations. Using signal-to-noise weights derived from the Scinet LIghtCone Simulations (SLICS) mock catalogue we optimally stack the lensing signal of KiDS troughs with an angular radius $\theta_A$ = {5,10,15,20} arcmin, resulting in {16.8,14.9,10.13,7.55} $\sigma$ detections. Finally, we select troughs using a volume-limited sample of galaxies, split into two redshift bins between 0.1 < z < 0.3. For troughs/ridges with transverse comoving radius $R_A$ = 1.9 Mpc/h, we find no significant difference in the comoving Excess Surface Density as a function of $P$ and $\delta$ between the low- and high-redshift sample. We measure the projected galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing signals using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) to study galaxy bias. We use the concept of non-linear and stochastic galaxy biasing in the framework of halo occupation statistics to constrain the parameters of the halo occupation statistics and to unveil the origin of galaxy biasing. The bias function $\Gamma_{\text{gm}}(r_{\text{p}})$, where $r_{\text{p}}$ is the projected comoving separation, is evaluated using the analytical halo model from which the scale dependence of $\Gamma_{\text{gm}}(r_{\text{p}})$, and the origin of the non-linearity and stochasticity in halo occupation models can be inferred. Our observations unveil the physical reason for the non-linearity and stochasticity, further explored using hydrodynamical simulations, with the stochasticity mostly originating from the non-Poissonian behaviour of satellite galaxies in the dark matter haloes and their spatial distribution, which does not follow the spatial distribution of dark matter in the halo. The observed non-linearity is mostly due to the presence of the central galaxies, as was noted from previous theoretical work on the same topic. We also see that overall, more massive galaxies reveal a stronger scale dependence, and out to a larger radius. Our results show that a wealth of information about galaxy bias is hidden in halo occupation models. The spatial distribution of satellite galaxies encodes rich information of the structure and assembly history of galaxy clusters. In this paper, we select a redMaPPer cluster sample in SDSS Stripe 82 region with $0.1 \le z \le 0.33$, $20<\lambda<100$ and $P_{\rm cen}>0.7$. Using the high-quality weak lensing data from CS82 Survey, we constrain the mass profile of this sample. Then we compare directly the mass density profile with the satellite number density profile. We find that the total mass and number density profiles have the same shape, both well fitted by an NFW profile. The scale radii agree with each other within 1$\sigma$ error ($r_{\rm s,gal}=0.34_{-0.03}^{+0.04}$Mpc vs $r_{\rm s}=0.37_{-0.10}^{+0.15}$Mpc )., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, accepted by mnras

We demonstrate that deep good-seeing VLT/HAWK-I $K_\mathrm{s}$ images complemented with $g$+$z$-band photometry can yield a sensitivity for weak lensing studies of massive galaxy clusters at redshifts \mbox{$0.7\lesssim z \lesssim 1.1$}, which is almost identical to the sensitivity of HST/ACS mosaics of single-orbit depth. Key reasons for this good performance are the excellent image quality frequently achievable for $K_\mathrm{s}$ imaging from the ground, a highly effective photometric selection of background galaxies, and a galaxy ellipticity dispersion that is noticeably lower than for optically observed high-redshift galaxy samples. Incorporating results from the 3D-HST and UltraVISTA surveys we also obtained a more accurate calibration of the source redshift distribution than previously achieved for similar optical weak lensing data sets. Here we studied the extremely massive galaxy cluster RCS2$J$232727.7$-$020437 (\mbox{$z=0.699$}), combining deep VLT/\mbox{HAWK-I} $K_\mathrm{s}$ images (point spread function with a 0\farcs35 full width at half maximum) with LBT/LBC photometry. The resulting weak lensing mass reconstruction suggests that the cluster consists of a single overdensity, which is detected with a peak significance of $10.1\sigma$. We constrained the cluster mass to \mbox{$M_\mathrm{200c}/(10^{15} \mathrm{M}_\odot) =2.06^{+0.28}_{-0.26}(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 0.12 (\mathrm{sys.})$} assuming a spherical Navarro, Frenk \& White model and simulation-based priors on the concentration, making it one of the most massive galaxy clusters known in the \mbox{$z\gtrsim 0.7$} Universe. We study the statistics of peaks in a weak lensing reconstructed mass map of the first 450 square degrees of the Kilo Degree Survey. The map is computed with aperture masses directly applied to the shear field with an NFW-like compensated filter. We compare the peak statistics in the observations with that of simulations for various cosmologies to constrain the cosmological parameter $S_8 = \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}$, which probes the ($\Omega_{\rm m}, \sigma_8$) plane perpendicularly to its main degeneracy. We estimate $S_8=0.750\pm0.059$, using peaks in the signal-to-noise range $0 \leq {\rm S/N} \leq 4$, and accounting for various systematics, such as multiplicative shear bias, mean redshift bias, baryon feedback, intrinsic alignment, and shear-position coupling. These constraints are $\sim25\%$ tighter than the constraints from the high significance peaks alone ($3 \leq {\rm S/N} \leq 4$) which typically trace single-massive halos. This demonstrates the gain of information from low-S/N peaks. However we find that including ${\rm S/N} < 0$ peaks does not add further information. Our results are in good agreement with the tomographic shear two-point correlation function measurement in KiDS-450. Combining shear peaks with non-tomographic measurements of the shear two-point correlation functions yields a $\sim20\%$ improvement in the uncertainty on $S_8$ compared to the shear two-point correlation functions alone, highlighting the great potential of peaks as a cosmological probe., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This paper is the first of a series of papers constraining cosmological parameters with weak lensing peak statistics using $\sim 450~\rm deg^2$ of imaging data from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS-450). We measure high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR: $\nu$) weak lensing convergence peaks in the range of $3<\nu<5$, and employ theoretical models to derive expected values. These models are validated using a suite of simulations. We take into account two major systematic effects, the boost factor and the effect of baryons on the mass-concentration relation of dark matter haloes. In addition, we investigate the impacts of other potential astrophysical systematics including the projection effects of large scale structures, intrinsic galaxy alignments, as well as residual measurement uncertainties in the shear and redshift calibration. Assuming a flat $\Lambda$CDM model, we find constraints for $S_{\rm 8}=\sigma_{\rm 8}(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5}=0.746^{+0.046}_{-0.107}$ according to the degeneracy direction of the cosmic shear analysis and $\Sigma_{\rm 8}=\sigma_{\rm 8}(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.38}=0.696^{+0.048}_{-0.050}$ based on the derived degeneracy direction of our high-SNR peak statistics. The difference between the power index of $S_{\rm 8}$ and in $\Sigma_{\rm 8}$ indicates that combining the two probes has the potential to break the degeneracy in $\sigma_{\rm 8}$ and $\Omega_{\rm m}$. Galaxy systems with large magnitude gaps - defined as the difference in magnitude between the central galaxy and the brightest satellite in the central region - have been claimed to have earlier formation histories. In this study we measure the mass concentration, as an indicator of early formation, of ensembles of galaxy systems divided by redshift and magnitude gaps in the $r$ band. We use cross-correlation weak lensing measurements with NFW parametric mass profiles to measure masses and concentrations of these ensembles from a catalogue of systems built from the SDSS Coadd by the redMaPPer algorithm. The lensing shear data come from the CFHT Stripe 82 (CS82) survey, and consists of $i$-band images of the SDSS Stripe 82 region. We find that the stack made up of systems with larger magnitude gaps has a high probability of being more concentrated on average, in the lowest redshift slice ($0.2

We present the first weak lensing calibration of $\mu_{\star}$, a new galaxy cluster mass proxy corresponding to the total stellar mass of red and blue members, in two cluster samples selected from the SDSS Stripe 82 data: 230 redMaPPer clusters at redshift $0.1\leq z<0.33$ and 136 Voronoi Tessellation (VT) clusters at $0.1 \leq z < 0.6$. We use the CS82 shear catalog and stack the clusters in $\mu_{\star}$ bins to measure a mass-observable power law relation. For redMaPPer clusters we obtain $M_0 = (1.77 \pm 0.36) \times 10^{14}h^{-1} M_{\odot}$, $\alpha = 1.74 \pm 0.62$. For VT clusters, we find $M_0 = (4.31 \pm 0.89) \times 10^{14}h^{-1} M_{\odot}$, $\alpha = 0.59 \pm 0.54$ and $M_0 = (3.67 \pm 0.56) \times 10^{14}h^{-1} M_{\odot}$, $\alpha = 0.68 \pm 0.49$ for a low and a high redshift bin, respectively. Our results are consistent, internally and with the literature, indicating that our method can be applied to any cluster finding algorithm. In particular, we recommend that $\mu_{\star}$ be used as the mass proxy for VT clusters. We perform a combined analysis of cosmic shear tomography, galaxy-galaxy lensing tomography, and redshift-space multipole power spectra (monopole and quadrupole) using 450 deg$^2$ of imaging data by the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) overlapping with two spectroscopic surveys: the 2-degree Field Lensing Survey (2dFLenS) and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). We restrict the galaxy-galaxy lensing and multipole power spectrum measurements to the overlapping regions with KiDS, and self-consistently compute the full covariance between the different observables using a large suite of $N$-body simulations. We methodically analyze different combinations of the observables, finding that galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements are particularly useful in improving the constraint on the intrinsic alignment amplitude (by 30%, positive at $3.5\sigma$ in the fiducial data analysis), while the multipole power spectra are useful in tightening the constraints along the lensing degeneracy direction (e.g. factor of two stronger matter density constraint in the fiducial analysis). The fully combined constraint on $S_8 \equiv \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3} = 0.742 \pm 0.035$, which is an improvement by 20% compared to KiDS alone, corresponds to a $2.6\sigma$ discordance with Planck, and is not significantly affected by fitting to a more conservative set of scales. Given the tightening of the parameter space, we are unable to resolve the discordance with an extended cosmology that is simultaneously favored in a model selection sense, including the sum of neutrino masses, curvature, evolving dark energy, and modified gravity. The complementarity of our observables allows for constraints on modified gravity degrees of freedom that are not simultaneously bounded with either probe alone, and up to a factor of three improvement in the $S_8$ constraint in the extended cosmology compared to KiDS alone., Comment: 31 pages, 20 figures, results unchanged, version accepted for publication by MNRAS. We conduct a comprehensive study of the effects of incorporating galaxy morphology information in photometric redshift estimation. Using machine learning methods, we assess the changes in the scatter and catastrophic outlier fraction of photometric redshifts when galaxy size, ellipticity, S\'{e}rsic index and surface brightness are included in training on galaxy samples from the SDSS and the CFHT Stripe-82 Survey (CS82). We show that by adding galaxy morphological parameters to full $ugriz$ photometry, only mild improvements are obtained, while the gains are substantial in cases where fewer passbands are available. For instance, the combination of $grz$ photometry and morphological parameters almost fully recovers the metrics of $5$-band photometric redshifts. We demonstrate that with morphology it is possible to determine useful redshift distribution $N(z)$ of galaxy samples without any colour information. We also find that the inclusion of quasar redshifts and associated object sizes in training improves the quality of photometric redshift catalogues, compensating for the lack of a good star-galaxy separator. We further show that morphological information can mitigate biases and scatter due to bad photometry. As an application, we derive both point estimates and posterior distributions of redshifts for the official CS82 catalogue, training on morphology and SDSS Stripe-82 $ugriz$ bands when available. Our redshifts yield a 68th percentile error of $0.058(1+z)$, and a catastrophic outlier fraction of $5.2$ per cent. We present cosmological parameter constraints from a joint analysis of three cosmological probes: the tomographic cosmic shear signal in $\sim$450 deg$^2$ of data from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS), the galaxy-matter cross-correlation signal of galaxies from the Galaxies And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey determined with KiDS weak lensing, and the angular correlation function of the same GAMA galaxies. We use fast power spectrum estimators that are based on simple integrals over the real-space correlation functions, and show that they are practically unbiased over relevant angular frequency ranges. We test our full pipeline on numerical simulations that are tailored to KiDS and retrieve the input cosmology. By fitting different combinations of power spectra, we demonstrate that the three probes are internally consistent. For all probes combined, we obtain $S_8\equiv \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}=0.800_{-0.027}^{+0.029}$, consistent with Planck and the fiducial KiDS-450 cosmic shear correlation function results. Marginalising over wide priors on the mean of the tomographic redshift distributions yields consistent results for $S_8$ with an increase of $28\%$ in the error. The combination of probes results in a $26\%$ reduction in uncertainties of $S_8$ over using the cosmic shear power spectra alone. The main gain from these additional probes comes through their constraining power on nuisance parameters, such as the galaxy intrinsic alignment amplitude or potential shifts in the redshift distributions, which are up to a factor of two better constrained compared to using cosmic shear alone, demonstrating the value of large-scale structure probe combination., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures. In recent years, multiple studies have reported substantial populations of large, low-surface-brightness galaxies in local galaxy clusters. Various theories that aim to explain the presence of such ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have since been proposed. A key question that will help to differentiate between models is whether UDGs have counterparts in lower-mass host haloes, and what their abundance as a function of halo mass is. In this study we extend our previous study of UDGs in galaxy clusters to galaxy groups. We measure the abundance of UDGs in 325 spectroscopically-selected groups from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We make use of the overlapping imaging from the ESO Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), from which we can identify galaxies with mean surface brightnesses within their effective radii down to ~25.5 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in the r-band. We are able to measure a significant overdensity of UDGs (with sizes r_eff > 1.5 kpc) in galaxy groups down to M200=10^12 Msun, a regime where approximately only 1 in 10 groups contains a UDG that we can detect. We build a background cluster candidate catalog from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey, using our detection algorithm RedGOLD. The NGVS covers 104$deg^2$ of the Virgo cluster in the $u^*,g,r,i,z$-bandpasses to a depth of $ g \sim 25.7$~mag (5$\sigma$). Part of the survey was not covered or has shallow observations in the $r$--band. We build two cluster catalogs: one using all bandpasses, for the fields with deep $r$--band observations ($\sim 20 \ deg^2$), and the other using four bandpasses ($u^*,g,i,z$) for the entire NGVS area. Based on our previous CFHT-LS W1 studies, we estimate that both of our catalogs are $\sim100\%$($\sim70\%$) complete and $\sim80\%$ pure, at $z\le 0.6$($z\lesssim1$), for galaxy clusters with masses of $M\gtrsim10^{14}\ M_{\odot}$. We show that when using four bandpasses, though the photometric redshift accuracy is lower, RedGOLD detects massive galaxy clusters up to $z\sim 1$ with completeness and purity similar to the five-band case. This is achieved when taking into account the bias in the richness estimation, which is $\sim40\%$ lower at $0.5\le z<0.6$ and $\sim20\%$ higher at $0.6 1.4 \times 10^{14} \rm M_{\odot}$ and $0.08

RedGOLD searches for red-sequence galaxy overdensities while minimizing contamination from dusty star-forming galaxies. It imposes an NFW profile and calculates cluster detection significance and richness. We optimize these latter two parameters using both simulations and X-ray detected cluster catalogs, and obtain a catalog $\sim 80\%$ pure up to $z \sim 1$, and $\sim 100\%$ ($\sim 70\%$) complete at $z\le 0.6$ ( $z\lesssim1$) for galaxy clusters with $M \gtrsim 10^{14}\ {\rm M_{\odot}}$ at the CFHT-LS Wide depth. In the CFHT-LS W1, we detect 11 cluster candidates per $\rm deg^2$ out to $z\sim1.1$. When we optimize both completeness and purity, RedGOLD obtains a cluster catalog with higher completeness and purity than other public catalogs, obtained using CFHT-LS W1 observations, for $M \gtrsim 10^{14}\ {\rm M_{\odot}}$. We use X-ray detected cluster samples to extend the study of the X-ray temperature-optical richness relation to a lower mass threshold, and find a mass scatter at fixed richness of $\sigma_{lnM|\lambda}=0.39\pm0.07$ and $\sigma_{lnM|\lambda}=0.30\pm0.13$ for the Gozaliasl et al. (2014) and Mehrtens et al. (2012) samples. When considering similar mass ranges as previous work, we recover a smaller scatter in mass at fixed richness. We recover $93\%$ of the redMaPPer detections, and find that its richness estimates is on average $\sim 40-50\%$ larger than ours at $z>0.3$.
