Abstract: Approaches that are transdisciplinary and participatory can help to address complex socio-ecological issues by integrating multiple disciplinary perspectives while taking into account the different needs and experiences of community members and other stakeholders. Despite this promise, such approaches are rarely applied within the scientific community, as researchers and public actors often lack the training, practice and reference cases required to handle the working relationships and translations of terminology, ideas and values across multiple bodies of knowledge. A case study described in this manuscript depicts a group of researchers, artists and citizens consciously engaged in the construction of a transdisciplinary process as part of a 40-day 'citizen science' experiment focussed on assessing soil fertility in the urban area of Milan, Italy. The group drew from recognised scientific approaches, applied agronomic methodologies, artistic practices and technological tools, integrating them into a hybrid process of collective and participatory inquiry. As a quantitative outcome of the experiment, a dataset of bio-chemical parameters was generated, which was enriched by agronomic interpretations but also by artistic and reflective materials. Importantly, the process developed transdisciplinary and participatory skills, as it created a potentially replicable procedure of engagement, analysis and presentation for use in other citizen science settings. This article presents the context, the multiple objectives of the research and the applied approach and its timeline. Described in detail are the process of designing and conducting the experiment by involving an extended research community-including both junior and senior researchers-in progressive steps. Quantitative and qualitative results are provided. 2. Morphological and phylogenetic studies of Agaricus bresadolanus, Agaricus infidus (nom. inval.) and Agaricus romagnesii (Agaricaceae) reveal their conspecificity and variation in toxicity of this taxon

Abstract: Original morphological descriptions and newly generated ribosomal DNA sequence data of A. bresadolanus, “A. infidus” and A. romagnesii are compared in this manuscript. In 23 specimens we evaluated the main morphological characters traditionally used to distinguish these taxa: shape of the stipe base, odour, size and shape of spores, presence/absence of cheilocystidia, and toxicity. The ITS rDNA region was sequenced in all specimens, except for an authentic collection of A. romagnesii (KW-M 71176) and two specimens with subglobose spores attributed to “A. infidus” (as A. alessii nom. inval.) by Curreli & Contu. No diagnostic molecular characters were found among all specimens examined that would justify the separation of the originally described entities A. bresadolanus, “A. infidus” and A. romagnesii. Based on our analysis of the morphological and molecular characters, we conclude that all three entities belong to a single taxon, whose correct name is A. bresadolanus based on priority over A. romagnesii. The apparent contradiction between the ellipsoid spores found by us in the two specimens of “A. infidus” identified by Alessio and the subglobose spores depicted by him in the original publication is explained by the extreme variability of the spore shape in this taxon. Our morphological study of the two specimens identified as “A. alessii” suggests that they might belong to A. pseudopratensis a member of A. sect. Xanthodermatei or to an unknown taxon. Nomenclatural problems of the names “A. infidus”, “A. alessii” and A. bresadolanus are revisited and it is concluded that the two first names are invalidly published.

Abstract: Dopo un periodo in cui la pianificazione urbana e dei trasporti ha riconosciuto molta importanza alla velocità dello spostamento, al trasporto privato motorizzato e, più recentemente, a quello pubblico di massa, nel campo degli studi urbani e dei trasporti crescente attenzione è rivolta alla mobilità pedonale (walking) e alla pedonalità (walkability) degli ambienti urbani, ossia alla possibilità dei luoghi di essere raggiunti, fruiti, attraversati e visitati a piedi (Colleoni et al., 2017). In questo quadro, il contributo presenta i risultati di una ricerca sulle percezioni della pedonalità delle aree turistiche di un campione di residenti con 65 anni e più, residenti nel comune di Milano. L’obiettivo è di analizzare il rapporto tra tourist attractiveness e pedestrian friendliness dei territori e di individuare i gruppi di over 65 più vulnerabili sotto il profilo della pedonalità. Nella prima parte, verrà presentata una breve rassegna del rapporto tra popolazioni anziane, attrattività turistica e accessibilità pedonale e delle determinanti della pedonalità. In seguito, verranno presentati il metodo e i risultati per discutere, in sede conclusiva, il contributo dello studio per le politiche turistiche urbane che mirino a costruire città a misura d’anziano., After a period in which transport and urban planning attribute great importance to motorized private transport and, more recently, to public transport, nowadays increasing attention is paid to walking and the walkability of urban environments, namely the possibility of places and destinations to being reached, used, crossed and visited on foot. Walking is indeed crucial to be studied as it is an important mean for increasing the quality of life in cities, given its potential role in countering car-dependent urban development, improving the health status of citizens, and increasing the attractiveness and vitality of public spaces, accessibility to opportunities, social inclusion, and neighborhoods’ social relations. Research generally showed the relevance of environment’s characteristics such as land-use, urban design and furniture, landscape, etc. However, it is crucial to consider that the features enhancing the urban environments’ walkability may vary according to the needs, preferences, and perceptions of different urban populations, as in the case of tourists and the elders. The paper presents the results of a research on the perceptions about tourist areas’ pedestrian friendliness of a sample of over 65 years old residents living in Milan. The results show a general assonance between tourist attractiveness and the elderly people’ perceptions and a dissonance, namely in the case of women and oldest-old respondents. In this sense, we argue the need for urban policies and tourist policies to improve different walkability assessments in order to guarantee an increasing attractiveness and inclusiveness of the city of Milan.

4. A contribution to the ITS-LSU phylogeny of the genus Leucopaxillus (/tricholomatoid clade, Agaricales), with three new genera and notes on Porpoloma

Abstract: Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS-LSU rDNA sequences dataset indicate that Leucopaxillus, as currently defined, is a highly polyphyletic genus. The new genera Giacomia, Notholepista and Pseudoclitopilus are introduced to accommodate Leucopaxillus mirabilis, L. subzonalis and L. rhodoleucus, respectively. Leucopaxillus subg. Aspropaxillus also seems to represent an independent evolutionary line in the /tricholomatoid clade, for which we suggest resurrecting the genus Aspropaxillus. Furthermore, the morphologically allied genus Porpoloma is also polyphyletic.

Classification �� Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Sordariomycetes. On SNA and CLA, sporulation abundant from aerial conidiophores and sporodochia. Aerial conidiophores erect or prostrate, copiously branching laterally and sympodially, giving rise to macro-, and rarely, microconidia; aerial conidiogenous cells mono- and polyphialidic, subulate to subcylindrical, smooth- and thin-walled, proliferating sympodially, 6.5��40.5 �� 2.5��4 ��m, with apical flared collarette and periclinal thickening; aerial conidia of two types: microconidia often produced on prostrate conidiophores, rarely on aerial mycelium, aggregating in false heads, ellipsoidal, subcylindrical to slightly falcate, 0 ��1-septate, 8��15 �� 2��29.5 ��m; macroconidia fusiform to falcate, straight to apically dorsiventrally curved, apex curved to pointed, base obtuse to papillate, 1��3-septate, smooth- and thin-walled; 1-septate conidia: (14��)18��27.5(��29.5) �� (2.5��)3��4 ��m (av. 22.8 �� 3.2 ��m); 2-septate conidia: 26��28.5 �� 3��4 ��m (av. 27.4 �� 3.6 ��m); 3-septate conidia: (28��)31.5��43(��50.5) �� 3��4 ��m (av. 37.3 �� 3.5 ��m). Conidiophores in sporodochia, densely and irregularly branched, bearing apical whorls of 2 �� 4 monophialides; sporodochial monophialides subcylindrical, 10��26 �� 2.5��4.5 ��m, smooth- and thin-walled, with a distinct apical collarette. Notes �� Fusarium chuoi resides in the Asian clade of the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex (FFSC: O��Donnell et al. 1998, Yilmaz et al. 2021, Crous et al. 2021b). Based on nucleotide searches using the Fusarium Pairwise ID engine on the Fusarioid-ID database (www.fusarium.org, Crous et al. 2021) the closest hit using the ITS sequence was Fusarium siculi (strain CBS 142422; identities = 449/450 (99 %), no gaps). The closest hit using the LSU sequence was F. siculi (strain CBS 142422; identities = 804/805 (99 %), no gaps). Closest hit using the cmdA sequence was Fusarium fractiflexum (strain NRRL 28852; identities = 426/434 (98 %), no gaps). Closest hit using the rpb1 sequence was F. fujikuroi (strain NRRL 13566; identities = 687/702 (98 %), no gaps). Closest hit using the rpb2 sequence was Fusarium globosum (strain CBS 428.97; identities = 856/867 (98 %), no gaps). Closest hit using the tef1 sequence was F. fractiflexum (strain NRRL 28852; identities = 619/643 (96 %), 2 gaps (0.3 %)). The phylogenetic results, however, showed that F. chuoi is not directly related to any of the previously described species of FFSC (see Suppl. material FP1353), clustering as the second basal-most species of that clade after F. sacchari. Asian Fusarium spp. in the FFSC are characterised by mono-and polyphialides producing oval to ellipsoid, rarely pyriform to globose (i.e., F. annulatum, F. fujikuroi and F. globosum) microconidia organized in chains or false heads; 3��5-septate sporodochial conidia and lacking chlamydospores. The elaborate, profusely branched aerial conidiophores of F. chuoi are comparable to those of F. concentricum, F. lumajangense, F. mangiferae and F. sacchari, all the latter species producing oval, ellipsoidal to allantoid microconidia on false heads.Aerial conidiophores of F. chuoi, however, mostly produce macroconidia, while microconidia grouped on false heads are restricted to short, mostly unbranched and prostrate conidiophores formed on the surface on the culture media. Several Asian species of the FFSC have been reported from Musa spp. i.e., F. annulatum, F. concentricum, F. fujikuroi, F. lumajangense and F. sacchari (Leslie & Summerell 2006, Maryani et al. 2019, Farr & Rossman 2021). The two strains representing F. chuoi were isolated as endophytes from asymptomatic seeds of wild banana (Musa itinerans), which had been collected predispersal and stored in the Millennium Seed Bank for ~2.5 years at -20 �� C prior to isolation. 8. Alpine constructed wetlands: A metagenomic analysis reveals microbial complementary structure

Abstract: Constructed wetlands (CWs) are used to water treatment worldwide, however their application at high-altitude is poorly studied. In order to survive mountain winters, CWs rely on native flora and associated microbial communities. However, the choice of plant-microbes pairs more suitable for water treatment is challenging in alpine environments. Using a metagenomic approach, we investigated the composition of prokaryotes and fungal communities, through ex- tensive sampling inside a constructed wetland in the SW-Alps. Best performing plant species were searched among those hosting the most diverse and resilient microbial communities and to this goal, we analysed them in the natural environment also. Our results showed that microbial communities were less diverse in the CW than at natural condi- tions, and they differed from plant to plant, revealing a clear variation in taxonomic composition between forbs and gramineous plants. Carex rostrata, Deschampsia caespitosa and Rumex alpinus hosted bacteria very active in N-cycles. Moreover, fungal and prokaryotic communities associated to R. alpinus (Polygonaceae) turned to be the richest and sta- ble among the studied species. In our opinion, this species should be prioritized in CWs at high elevations, also in con- sideration of its low maintenance requirements.

Abstract: Specimens of Nectria spp. and Nectriella rufofusca were obtained from the fungarium of Pier Andrea Saccardo, and investigated via a morphological and molecular approach based on MiSeq technology. ITS1 and ITS2 sequences were successfully obtained from 24 specimens identified as ‘Nectria’ sensu Saccardo (including 20 types) and from the type specimen of Nectriella rufofusca. For Nectria ambigua, N. radians and N. tjibodensis only the ITS1 sequence was recovered. On the basis of morphological and molecular analyses new nomenclatural combinations for Nectria albofimbriata, N. ambigua, N. ambigua var. pallens, N. granuligera, N. peziza subsp. reyesiana, N. radians, N. squamuligera, N. tjibodensis and new synonymies for N. congesta, N. flageoletiana, N. phyllostachydis, N. sordescens and N. tjibodensis var. crebrior are proposed. Furthermore, the current classification is confirmed for Nectria coronata, N. cyanostoma, N. dolichospora, N. illudens, N. leucotricha, N. mantuana, N. raripila and Nectriella rufofusca. This is the first time that these more than 100-yr-old specimens are subjected to molecular analysis, thereby providing important new DNA sequence data authentic for these names.

Furthermore, Stachybotrys sansevieriicola is described from Sansevieria ehrenbergii (Tanzania), Phacidium grevilleae from Grevillea robusta (Uganda), Graphium jumulu from Adansonia gregorii and Ophiostoma eucalyptigena from Eucalyptus marginata (Australia), Pleurophoma ossicola from bone and Plectosphaerella populi from Populus nigra (Germany), Colletotrichum neosansevieriae from Sansevieria trifasciata, Elsinoë othonnae from Othonna quinquedentata and Zeloasperisporium cliviae (Zeloasperisporiaceae fam. nov.) from Clivia sp. Tephrocybella (Basidiomycetes) represents a novel genus from wood (Italy). Morphological and culture characteristics along with ITS DNA barcodes are provided for all taxa.

Abstract: Objective. Celiac disease (CD) has strongly been established as associated with some site-specific gastrointestinal malignancies. On the contrary, according to the few reports available, the risk of colon carcinoma in CD patients has been described similar to that of general population. In this cohort study, we describe the risk of colon carcinoma in a group of Italian celiac patients. Materials and methods. The study population included all CD patients diagnosed at the Collaborating Centers of the Italian Registry of CD between 1st January 1982 and 31st December 2006. Upon diagnosis of CD and upon at every subsequent clinical control, the Collaborating Centers filled in a validated form for each CD patient reporting information about demographic data, possible occurrence of a neoplasm and adherence to a gluten-free diet. Results. Out of 1757 celiac patients enrolled, 6 developed a colon carcinoma during the follow-up period (mean: 18.1 years). The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) resulted 0.29 (95% CI = 0.07–0.45). Stratifying the risk for the dietary gluten intake, the SIR dropped to 0.07 (95% CI = 0.009–0.27) for CD patients with a strict adherence to a gluten-free diet. Conclusion. We confirm the previous finding that there is low risk to develop a colon cancer in celiac patients.

Abstract: The current wealth of studies on the plant microbiota reflects the widespread interest in this topic, since root-microbe interactions are not only crucial for better understanding plant growth and health, but also for sustainable crop production in a changing world. To date, such studies focus almost exclusively on the bacterial dimension of the root-associated microbiota. However, given the unique biological and ecological features of fungi, recruitment of the fungal microbiota may deviate from the relationships documented for bacteria. For instance, due to the mycelial growth form, the distinction among the different rhizosphere compartments (root surface/tissues vs rhizosphere soil) may be less clear-cut for fungi than for bacteria. Within the framework of a project combining meta-barcoding and systems biology to infer the principles underlying the interactions between tomato and its root mycobiota (Mycoplant), we addressed the relative importance of different factors (soil type, cultivar-specificity, abundant pathogen presence) shaping this fungal microbiota. Approx. 900 000 ITS2 and EF1-alpha amplicons obtained from the roots of four tomato cultivars grown in two different soils under greenhouse conditions were analyzed. Tomato genotypes either susceptible (Moneymaker, Cuore di Bue) or resistant (Heinz; Battito) to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici were used; the two resistant cultivars had been grown either in the presence or in the absence of the pathogen. Rhizosphere and bulk soil samples were also analyzed. Both soil type and plant genotype were significant drivers of the structure of root mycobiota, the magnitude of the impact of the two factors being comparable in some cases. Inoculation with the pathogen also significantly affected the communities associated with the resistant cultivars.

Abstract: Patients with celiac disease have an increased rate of enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma, but conflicting data are available about the protective role of a gluten-free diet with regard to the development of this malignancy. We followed 1,757 celiac patients for a total period of 31,801 person-years, collecting data about the frequency of gluten intake and the incidence of the enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma. Out of the nine celiac patients who developed an intestinal lymphoma [standard morbidity ratio of 6.42 (95% CI = 2.9-12.2; P < 0.001)], only two kept a strict gluten-free diet after the diagnosis of celiac disease and developed the malignancy after the peridiagnosis period of 3 years, dropping therefore the standard morbidity ratio to 0.22 (95%CI = 0.02-0.88; P < 0.001). The risk of developing an intestinal lymphoma for the celiac patients that used to have dietary gluten was significant (X(2 )= 4.8 P = 0.01). These results show that a strict gluten-free diet is protective towards the development of enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma.

Abstract: Background The association between coeliac disease (CD) and neoplasms has been long established, but few data are available about the risk factors. The aim of this paper is to estimate the risk of developing a neoplasm among non diagnosed coeliac patients and to evaluate if this risk correlates with the age of patients at diagnosis of coeliac disease. Methods The study population consists of patients (n = 1968) diagnosed with CD at 20 Italian gastroenterology referral Centers between 1st January 1982 and 31st March 2005. Results The SIR for all cancers resulted to be 1.3; 95% CI = 1.0–1.7 p < 0.001. The specific SIRs for non Hodgkin lymphoma was 4.7; 95% CI = 2.9–7.3 p < 0.001, for the small bowel carcinoma 25; 95% CI = 8.5–51.4 p < 0.001, for non Hodgkin lymphoma 10; 95% CI = 2.7–25 p = 0.01, finally for the stomach carcinoma 3; 95% CI = 1.3–4.9 p < 0.08. The mean age at diagnosis of CD of patients that developed sooner or later a neoplasm was 47,6 ± 10.2 years versus 28.6 ± 18.2 years of patients who did not. Conclusion Coeliac patients have an increased risk of developing cancer in relation to the age of diagnosis of CD. This risk results higher for malignancies of the gastro-intestinal sites. An accurate screening for tumors should be performed in patients diagnosed with CD in adulthood and in advancing age.
