Objective: To test the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire. Methods: The methodological, descriptive study was conducted at the Bulent Ecevit University, Zonguldak, Turkey, from January to June, 2016, and comprised obese patients presenting at the Endocrinology and Diabetes polyclinic tied to the university. Data was collected using patient identification form and Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire. SPSS 18 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Of the 151 subjects, 97(64.2%) were female and 54(35.8%) were male. Two-factor structure explained 58% of the total variance in the Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire. The Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient of the Turkish version was 0.876, indicating high internal consistency. The two factors found in the confirmatory factor analysis had Cronbach alpha values of 0.820 and 0.830. Conclusion: The validity and reliability of Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire was found to be high in Turkey. © 2018, Pakistan Medical Association. All rights reserved.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of Spirulina platensis on growth performance, egg quality and some serum parameters of laying Japanese quails. For this experiment, 100 ten weeks-old, female Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix Japonica) with similar body weight were caged individually and were randomly divided into four groups of 25 quails each. Quails were fed diets supplemented with 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% Spirulina platensis for 8 weeks. Spirulina platensis addition did not affect feed conversion ratio, feed intake, egg production, egg weight, shape index, eggshell thickness and haugh unit, significantly (P>0.05). However, there were significant differences (P0.05). The mean egg yolk cholesterol levels dropped by 19.65 and 18.93% in the 1.0 or 2.0% Spirulina platensis supplemented groups compared with control group. In conclusion, Spirulina algae can be used safely in laying quails diets with important effects on serum parameters and egg yolk cholesterol. © 2016 PSP. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Reiki on depression in elderly persons living in nursing homes. The study was conducted randomized, controlled and experimental. The study universe consisted of 170 elderly and due to the long duration of the study and 90 elderly who volunteered for the study and fulfilled the inclusion criteria formed the sample. Ninety elderly individuals who were included in the study were separated into 3 groups using the random sampling method: 30 in the reiki group, 30 in the sham reiki group, and 30 in the control group. Data was collected using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). There was a significant decrease in depression score of the Reiki group while there was no significant difference in depression scores of the sham Reiki and control group on the 4th, 8th and 12th weeks considering 1st week. In addition, the depression score of the Reiki group was lower than the depression scores of the sham Reiki and control group on the 4th, 8th and 12th weeks. The results of this study indicate that Reiki might be effective for reducing depression in elderly persons living in nursing homes. © 2015, National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR). WOS: 000366880400011, In this study mitochondrial DNA D-loop gene sequencing was used to investigate genetic structure of 11 Atlantic bonito Sarda sarda populations from the Black Sea, Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean Seas and Adriatic Sea. The total sequence length, variable sites and parsimony informative sites were 868 bp, 12 bp and 7 bp from 222 individuals, respectively. The nucleotide frequencies were 32.55% A, 31.32% T, 14.44% C, and 21.68% G. The total number of haplotypes was 19, and the highest number of different haplotypes was observed in the nortestem Mediterranean (the Iskenderun Bay) sample, and the lowest was observed in the Bulgarian sample. Low genetic diversity was observed within populations, and the mean genetic diversity within populations and the mean genetic divergence between populations were 0.0009 and 0.0013, respectively. AIM The tethered cord syndrome refers to a variety of lesions that can cause the conus medullaris to be low-lying or incapable of movement within the spinal canal. Permanent or temporary neurological complications were reported following surgical release. In this report, peri- and postoperative results in cases with tethered cord syndrome that were followed by multimodal intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (MIONM) methods are presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS An IONM system (Nicolet CR Endeavor) was used for monitoring during tethered cord surgery. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), motor evoked potentials (MEPs), direct nerve root/rootlet stimulation, free-run electromyography (EMG) and F-waves were used during tethered cord surgery of 10 cases to prevent possible nerve injuries. RESULTS MEP and SEP recordings did not change in any of the cases during surgery. The nervous tissue was identified and differentiated from connective tissue in three cases when motor responses were elicited with direct stimulation of nerve roots. None of the cases had neurological deficits following the operation. CONCLUSION Direct nerve root/rootlet stimulation should be one of the components of MIONM during surgery for tethered cord syndrome to prevent postoperative neurological deficits.

Organic acids are an alternative to antibiotic to be used exclusively as a growth stimulant and for improvement of the feed conversion rate in farm animals (Esteive et al., 1997). Organic acids reduce production of toxic components by bacteria and change the morphology of the intestinal wall and reduce colonization of pathogens on the intestinal wall, thus preventing damage of the epithelial cells (Langhout, 2000). The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of supplementation of different levels of organic acid mixture on broiler performance, carcass characteristics and meat composition.

This paper presents 145 length– weight relationships gathered from the literature pertaining to 30 Turkish freshwater fish species belonging to six families. The value of the slope b ranged from 2.04 for Carassius carassius to 3.46 for Scardinus erythroptalmus. The mean value of b was 2.91 (SD ¼ ; ; ; 0.305), which did not differ significantly from 3.0 (t-test, P > 0.05). The median value of b was 2.95 ; 50% of the b values ranged from 2.68 to 3.14. The plot of log a vs b was used to detect outliers.

Kurşun hayvanlarda fizyolojik ve biyokimyasal fonksiyon bozuculuklarına yol açan, yaygın bulunan çevre kirleticilerden biridir. Bu araştırmada broyler piliçlerin yemle kurşuna maruz kalmasının ve askorbik asit ilavesinin performans, serum biyokimyasal parametreler ile plazma malondialdehid seviyesi ve kurşun birikim düzeyi üzerine etkisi belirlendi. Bu amaçla, kurşun asetat 200 mg/kg ve askorbik asit 100 mg/kg oranında ayrı ayrı ve birlikte 42 gün süreyle karma yeme katıldı. Araştırmada 120 adet broyler civciv 3'er alt gruplu: kontrol, askorbik asit, kurşun ve kurşun + askorbik asitten oluşan 4 gruba ayrıldı. Araştırma sonunda kurşun ilavesi, canlı ağırlık ve canlık ağırlık artışında belirgin düşüklüğe neden oldu (P < 0,05). Yem tüketimi ve yemden yararlanma oranı, kurşun ve askorbik asidin ayrı ayrı ve birlikte katılmasından etkilenmedi. Kurşun, serum laktat dehidrojenaz, aspartat aminotransferaz, alanin aminotransferaz aktivitesi, albumin ve total protein konsantrasyonunu etkilemezken, malondialdehid (P < 0.001) ve trigliserid (P < 0,01) seviyesini belirgin olarak yükseltti. Serum ve kas kurşun düzeyi değişmezken, kurşun, böbrek ve karaciğerde birikim yaptı (P < 0,01). Bu araştırma sonucunda, kurşunun (200 mg/kg yem) broylerlerde büyümeyi baskıladığı ve plasma malondialdehid seviyesini yükselttiği belirlenmiştir. Yeme katılan askorbik asit kurşunun neden olduğu lipid peroksidasyonunu düşürmüş ve kurşunun büyümeyi baskılayıcı etkisini azaltma eğiliminde olduğu belirlenmiştir. Rasyona daha yüksek dozlarda askorbik asit katılmasının kurşunun büyüme üzerine olan olumsuz etkisinin tamamen giderilmesinde etkili olabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır., Lead is one of the ubiquitous environmental pollutants that induce a broad range of physiological and biochemical dysfunctions in animals. This study evaluated the effects of dietary lead exposure and ascorbic acid on performance, serum biochemical parameters, plasma malondialdehyde and lead accumulation in broiler chickens. For this purpose, lead acetate at 200 mg/kg and ascorbic acid at 100 mg/kg were added to the diet alone or in combination for 42 days. A total of 120 broiler chicks were divided into 4 treatment groups: control, ascorbic acid, lead, and lead + ascorbic acid. By the end of the study, lead caused body weight and body weight gain to decrease significantly, although its effects on feed consumption and the feed conversion ratio were not significant. While lead did not alter thep serum lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase or alanine aminotransferase activities or albumin or total protein concentrations, it increased malondialdehyde (P < 0.001) and triglyceride (P < 0.01) levels. Although the lead contents of the serum and muscle were unchanged, lead was accumulated in the liver and kidneys (P < 0.001). Our results showed that lead (200 mg/kg diet) had an inhibitory effect on the growth of broilers and appeared to be inducing lipid peroxidation. The addition of ascorbic acid to the diet reduced the plasma malondialdehyde levels induced by lead and tended to reduce the inhibitory effect of lead on growth. It is concluded that the addition of higher doses of ascorbic acid to the diet may be more efficacious in fully reversing the negative effect of lead on growth.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of live yeast culture supplementation as a natural feed additive on fattening performance, some blood and rumen fluid parameters in male goats. Totally 48 hybride male goat kids (Saanen x Sami breeds) were divided into one control and three treatment groups each containing 12 kids. Concentrates of groups were formulated as isonitrogenic and isocaloric. Live yeast culture (RumiSacc, Integro Food Industry and Trade Co., Istanbul, Turkey; Live yeast cell: 1.4 x 10(8) cfu per gram) was included in the concentrates at 0 (CON), 1.5 (YC15), 3.0 (YC30) and 4.5% (YC45) on fed basis, respectively. Concentrates were given ad libitum and 100 g per day per animal of lentil straw was given as roughage. Dietary yeast culture at the level of 4.5% increased total weight gain (+15.5% regarding control group). Rumen ammonia-N level was increased with 3 and 4.5% of live yeast culture (+30.9 and +30.5% regarding control group). Ruminal total and individual VFA and blood plasma levels of total protein, albumin, urea nitrogen, total cholesterol, triglyceride and the activities of alanine amino transferase, aspartate amino transferase and gamma-glutamyl transferase were not affected from the dietary treatments. Coliform bacteria count in ruminal fluid and faeces was decreased with yeast culture supplementation. It is concluded that live yeast culture can be included in male goat diets at the level of 4.5% with positively affecting performance.
