1. SPIDERS: An Overview of The Largest Catalogue of Spectroscopically Confirmed X-ray Galaxy Clusters

Abstract: SPIDERS is the spectroscopic follow-up effort of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV) project for the identification of X-ray selected galaxy clusters. We present our catalogue of 2740 visually inspected galaxy clusters as a part of the SDSS Data Release 16 (DR16). Here we detail the target selection, our methods for validation of the candidate clusters, performance of the survey, the construction of the final sample, and a full description of what is found in the catalogue. Of the sample, the median number of members per cluster is approximately 10, with 818 having 15 or greater. We find that we are capable of validating over 99% of clusters when 5 redshifts are obtained below $z<0.3$ and when 9 redshifts are obtained above $z>0.3$. We discuss the improvements of this catalogue's identification of cluster using 33,340 redshifts, with $\Delta z_{\rm{phot}} / \Delta z_{\rm{spec}} \sim 100$, over other photometric and spectroscopic surveys, as well as present an update to previous ($\sigma - L_{X}$) and ($\sigma - \lambda$) relations. Abstract: SPIDERS (The SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is a large spectroscopic programme for X-ray selected galaxy clusters as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV (SDSS-IV). We describe the final dataset in the context of SDSS Data Release 16 (DR16): the survey overall characteristics, final targeting strategies, achieved completeness and spectral quality, with special emphasis on its use as a galaxy cluster sample for cosmology applications. SPIDERS now consists of about 27,000 new optical spectra of galaxies selected within 4,000 photometric red sequences, each associated with an X-ray source. The excellent spectrograph efficiency and a robust analysis pipeline yield a spectroscopic redshift measurement success rate exceeding 98%, with a median velocity accuracy of 20 km s$^{-1}$ (at $z=0.2$). Using the catalogue of 2,740 X-ray galaxy clusters confirmed with DR16 spectroscopy, we reveal the three-dimensional map of the galaxy cluster distribution in the observable Universe up to $z\sim0.6$. We highlight the homogeneity of the member galaxy spectra among distinct regions of the galaxy cluster phase space. Aided by accurate spectroscopic redshifts and by a model of the sample selection effects, we compute the galaxy cluster X-ray luminosity function and we present its lack of evolution up to $z=0.6$. Finally we discuss the prospects of forthcoming large multiplexed spectroscopic programmes dedicated to follow up the next generation of all-sky X-ray source catalogues., Comment: 19 pages, 21 figures. Abstract: Large area catalogs of galaxy clusters constructed from ROSAT All Sky Survey provide the base for our knowledge on the population of clusters thanks to the long-term multiwavelength efforts on their follow-up. Advent of large area photometric surveys superseding in depth previous all-sky data allows us to revisit the construction of X-ray cluster catalogs, extending the study to lower cluster masses and to higher redshifts and to provide the modelling of the selection function. We perform a wavelet detection of X-ray sources and make extensive simulations of the detection of clusters in the RASS data. We assign an optical richness to each of the 24,788 detected X-ray sources in the 10,382 square degrees of SDSS BOSS area, using redMaPPer version 5.2. We name this survey COnstrain Dark Energy with X-ray (CODEX) clusters. We show that there is no obvious separation of sources on galaxy clusters and AGN, based on distribution of systems on their richness. This is a combination of increasing number of galaxy groups and their selection as identification of an X-ray sources either by chance or due to groups hosting an AGN. To clean the sample, we use a cut on the optical richness at the level corresponding to the 10\% completeness of the survey and include it into the modelling of cluster selection function. We present the X-ray catalog extending to a redshift of 0.6 down to X-ray fluxes of $10^{-13}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. We provide the modelling of the sample selection and discuss the redshift evolution of the high end of the X-ray luminosity function (XLF). Our results on $z<0.3$ XLF are in agreement with previous studies, while we provide new constraints on the $0.3

Abstract: By using the deepest available mid and far infrared surveys in the CANDELS, GOODS and COSMOS fields we study the evolution of the Main Sequence (MS) of star forming galaxies (SFGs) from z~0 to` ~2.5 at stellar masses larger than 10^{10} M_{\odot}. The MS slope and scatter are consistent with a re-scaled version of the local relation and distribution, shifted at higher values of SFR according to ~(1+z)^{3.2}. The relation exhibits a bending at the high mass end and a slightly increasing scatter as a function of the stellar mass. We show that the previously reported evolution of the MS slope, in the considered mass and redshift range, is due to a selection effect. The distribution of galaxies in the MS region at fixed stellar mass is well represented by a single log-normal distribution at all redshifts and masses, with starburst galaxies (SBs) occupying the tail at high SFR., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

Abstract: We present the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) catalog for SPectroscoic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS) DR14 cluster program value-added catalog. We list the 416 BCGs identified as part of this process, along with their stellar mass, star formation rates, and morphological properties. We identified the BCGs based on the available spectroscopic data from SPIDERS and photometric data from SDSS. We computed stellar masses and SFRs of the BCGs on the basis of SDSS, WISE, and GALEX photometry using spectral energy distribution fitting. Morphological properties for all BCGs were derived by Sersic profile fitting using the software package SIGMA in different optical bands (g,r,i). We combined this catalog with the BCGs of galaxy groups and clusters extracted from the deeper AEGIS, CDFS, COSMOS, XMM-CFHTLS, and XMM-XXL surveys to study the stellar mass - halo mass relation using the largest sample of X-ray groups and clusters known to date. This result suggests that the mass growth of the central galaxy is controlled by the hierarchical mass growth of the host halo. We find a strong correlation between the stellar mass of BCGs and the mass of their host halos. This relation shows no evolution since z $\sim$ 0.65. We measure a mean scatter of 0.21 and 0.25 for the stellar mass of BCGs in a given halo mass at low ( $0.1

Abstract: This paper documents the 16th data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS), the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the Southern Hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). We also preview future SDSS-V operations (due to start in 2020), and summarize plans for the final SDSS-IV data release (DR17).

Abstract: We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs ($R = \lambda/\Delta\lambda \sim 6500$), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph ($R \sim 20\,000$). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger. Abstract: By using a set of different SFR indicators, including WISE mid-infrared and Halpha emission, we study the slope of the Main Sequence (MS) of local star forming galaxies at stellar masses larger than 10^{10} M_{\odot}. The slope of the relation strongly depends on the SFR indicator used. In all cases, the local MS shows a bending at high stellar masses with respect to the slope obtained in the low mass regime. While the distribution of galaxies in the upper envelope of the MS is consistent with a log-normal distribution, the lower envelope shows an excess of galaxies, which increases as a function of the stellar mass but varies as a function of the SFR indicator used. The scatter of the best log-normal distribution increases with stellar mass from ~0.3 dex at 10^{10} M_{\odot} to ~0.45 at 10^{11} M_{\odot}. The MS high-mass end is dominated by central galaxies of group sized halos with a red bulge and a disk redder than the lower mass counterparts. We argue that the MS bending in this region is due to two processes: i) the formation of a bulge component as a consequence of the increased merger activity in groups, and ii) the cold gas starvation induced by the hot halo environment, which cuts off the gas inflow onto the disk. Similarly, the increase of the MS scatter at high stellar masses would be explained by the larger spread of star formation histories of central group and cluster galaxies with respect to lower mass systems., Comment: 16 pages with 14 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

9. Mass Calibration of the CODEX Cluster Sample using SPIDERS Spectroscopy -- I. The Richness-Mass Relation

Abstract: We use galaxy dynamical information to calibrate the richness-mass scaling relation of a sample of 428 galaxy clusters that are members of the CODEX sample with redshifts up to z~0.7. These clusters were X-ray selected using the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), cross-matched to associated systems in the redMaPPer catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The spectroscopic sample we analyze was obtained in the SPIDERS program and contains ~7800 red member galaxies. Adopting NFW mass and galaxy density profiles and a broad range of orbital anisotropy profiles, we use the Jeans equation to calculate halo masses. Modeling the scaling relation as $\lambda \propto \text{A}_{\lambda} {M_{\text{200c}}}^{\text{B}_{\lambda}} ({1+z})^{\gamma_{\lambda}}$, we find the parameter constraints $\text{A}_{\lambda}=38.6^{+3.1}_{-4.1}\pm3.9$, $\text{B}_{\lambda}=0.99^{+0.06}_{-0.07}\pm0.04$, and $\gamma_{\lambda}=-1.13^{+0.32}_{-0.34}\pm0.49$. We find good agreement with previously published mass trends with the exception of those from stacked weak lensing analyses. We note that although the lensing analyses failed to account for the Eddington bias, this is not enough to explain the differences. We suggest that differences in the levels of contamination between pure redMaPPer and RASS+redMaPPer samples could well contribute to these differences. The redshift trend we measure is more negative than but statistically consistent with previous results. We suggest that our measured redshift trend reflects a change in the cluster galaxy red sequence fraction with redshift, noting that the trend we measure is consistent with but somewhat stronger than an independently measured redshift trend in the red sequence fraction. We also examine the impact of a plausible model of correlated scatter in X-ray luminosity and optical richness, showing it has negligible impact on our results., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, published in MNRAS

Abstract: Determination of cluster masses is a fundamental tool for cosmology. Comparing mass estimates obtained by different probes allows to understand possible systematic uncertainties. The cluster Abell 315 is an interesting test case, since it has been claimed to be underluminous in X-ray for its mass (determined via kinematics and weak lensing). We have undertaken new spectroscopic observations with the aim of improving the cluster mass estimate, using the distribution of galaxies in projected phase space. We identified cluster members in our new spectroscopic sample. We estimated the cluster mass from the projected phase-space distribution of cluster members using the MAMPOSSt method. In doing this estimate we took into account the presence of substructures that we were able to identify. We identify several cluster substructures. The main two have an overlapping spatial distribution, suggesting a (past or ongoing) collision along the line-of-sight. After accounting for the presence of substructures, the mass estimate of Abell 315 from kinematics is reduced by a factor 4, down to M200=0.8 (-0.4,+0.6) x 10^14 Msun. We also find evidence that the cluster mass concentration is unusually low, c200=r200/r-2 <~ 1. Using our new estimate of c200 we revise the weak lensing mass estimate down to M200=1.8 (-0.9,+1.7) x 10^14 Msun. Our new mass estimates are in agreement with that derived from the cluster X-ray luminosity via a scaling relation, M200=0.9+-0.2 x 10^14 Msun. Abell 315 no longer belongs to the class of X-ray underluminous clusters. Its mass estimate was inflated by the presence of an undetected subcluster in collision with the main cluster. Whether the presence of undetected line-of-sight structures can be a general explanation for all X-ray underluminous clusters remains to be explored using a statistically significant sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 12 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: We analyze a complete spectroscopic sample of galaxies ($\sim$600,000 ) drawn from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, DR7) to look for evidence of galactic winds in the local Universe. We focus on the shape of the [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission line as a tracer of ionizing gas outflows. We stack our spectra in a fine grid of star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass to analyze the dependence of winds on the position of galaxies in the SFR versus mass diagram. We do not find any significant evidence of broad and shifted [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission line which we interpret as no evidence of outflowing ionized gas in the global population. We have also classified these galaxies as star-forming or AGN dominated according to their position in the standard BPT diagram. We show how the average [OIII]$\lambda$5007 profile changes as function of nature of the dominant ionizing source. We find that in the star-forming dominated source the oxygen line is symmetric and governed by the gravitational potential well. The AGN or composite AGN$\setminus$star-formation activity objects, in contrast, display a prominent and asymmetric profile that can be well described by a broad gaussian component that is blue-shifted from a narrow symmetric core. In particular, we find that the blue wings of the average [OIII]$\lambda$5007 profiles are increasingly prominent in the LINERs and Seyfert galaxies. We conclude that, in the low-redshift Universe, "pure" star-formation activity does not seem capable of driving ionized-gas outflows, while, the presence of optically selected AGN seems to play a primary role to drive such winds. We find that SFRs for nearly edge-on disks are underestimated by factors ranging from $\sim$ 0.2 dex for low mass galaxies up to $\sim$ 0.4 dex for high mass galaxies. This results in a substantially flatter MS relation for high-inclination disks compared to that for less inclined ones, though the global effect over the whole sample of star-forming galaxies is relatively minor, given the small fraction of high-inclination disks. Abstract: The CFHTLS presents a unique data set for weak lensing studies, having high quality imaging and deep multi-band photometry. We have initiated an XMM-CFHTLS project to provide X-ray observations of the brightest X-ray selected clusters within the wide CFHTLS area. Performance of these observations and the high quality of CFHTLS data, allows us to revisit the identification of X-ray sources, introducing automated reproducible algorithms, based on the multi-color red sequence finder. We have also introduced a new optical mass proxy. We provide the calibration of the red sequence observed in the CFHT filters and compare the results with the traditional single color red sequence and photoz. We test the identification algorithm on the subset of highly significant XMM clusters and identify 100% of the sample. We find that the integrated z-band luminosity of the red sequence galaxies correlates well with the X-ray luminosity with a surprisingly small scatter of 0.20 dex. We further use the multi-color red sequence to reduce spurious detections in the full XMM and RASS data sets, resulting in catalogs of 196 and 32 clusters, respectively. We made spectroscopic follow-up observations of some of these systems with HECTOSPEC and in combination with BOSS DR9 data. We also describe the modifications needed to the source detection algorithm in order to keep high purity of extended sources in the shallow X-ray data. Abstract: We present the results of a search for extended X-ray sources and their corresponding galaxy groups from 800-ks Chandra coverage of the All-wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS). This yields one of the largest X-ray selected galaxy group catalogs from a blind survey to date. The red-sequence technique and spectroscopic redshifts allow us to identify 100$%$ of reliable sources, leading to a catalog of 52 galaxy groups. The groups span the redshift range $z\sim0.066-1.544$ and virial mass range $M_{200}\sim1.34\times 10^{13}-1.33\times 10^{14}M_\odot$. For the 49 extended sources which lie within DEEP2 and DEEP3 Galaxy Redshift Survey coverage, we identify spectroscopic counterparts and determine velocity dispersions. We select member galaxies by applying different cuts along the line of sight or in projected spatial coordinates. A constant cut along the line of sight can cause a large scatter in scaling relations in low-mass or high-mass systems depending on the size of cut. A velocity dispersion based virial radius can more overestimate velocity dispersion in comparison to X-ray based virial radius for low mass systems. There is no significant difference between these two radial cuts for more massive systems. Independent of radial cut, overestimation of velocity dispersion can be created in case of existence of significant substructure and also compactness in X-ray emission which mostly occur in low mass systems. Abstract: Data from the AEGIS, COSMOS and ECDFS surveys are combined to infer the bias and dark matter halo mass of moderate luminosity [LX(2-10 keV) = 42.9 erg s-1] X-ray AGN at z~1 via their cross-correlation function with galaxies. In contrast to standard cross-correlation function estimators, we present a method that requires spectroscopy only for the AGN and uses photometric redshift probability distribution functions for galaxies to determine the projected real-space AGN/galaxy cross-correlation function. The estimated dark matter halo mass of X-ray AGN in the combined AEGIS, COSMOS and ECDFS fields is ~13h-1M_solar, in agreement with previous studies at similar redshift and luminosity ranges. Removing from the sample the 5 per cent of the AGN associated with X-ray selected groups results in a reduction by about 0.5 dex in the inferred AGN dark matter halo mass. The distribution of AGN in dark matter halo mass is therefore skewed and the bulk of the population lives in moderate mass haloes. We do not observe any evolution in the HOD and total stellar mass-halo mass relations in groups. The picture emerging from our findings suggests that the galaxy population in the most massive systems is evolving faster than galaxies in lower mass haloes, consistently with a 'halo downsizing' scenario.

Abstract: We present the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) catalog for SPectroscoic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS) DR14 cluster program value-added catalog. We list the 416 BCGs identified as part of this process, along with their stellar mass, star formation rates (SFRs), and morphological properties. We identified the BCGs based on the available spectroscopic data from SPIDERS and photometric data from SDSS. We computed stellar masses and SFRs of the BCGs on the basis of SDSS, WISE, and GALEX photometry using spectral energy distribution fitting. Morphological properties for all BCGs were derived by Sersic profile fitting using the software package SIGMA in different optical bands (g,r,i). We combined this catalog with the BCGs of galaxy groups and clusters extracted from the deeper AEGIS, CDFS, COSMOS, XMM-CFHTLS, and XMM-XXL surveys to study the stellar mass-halo mass relation using the largest sample of X-ray groups and clusters known to date. This result suggests that the mass growth of the central galaxy is controlled by the hierarchical mass growth of the host halo. We find a strong correlation between the stellar mass of BCGs and the mass of their host halos. This relation shows no evolution since z similar to 0.65. Abstract: Context. Large area catalogs of galaxy clusters constructed from ROSAT All-Sky Survey provide the basis for our knowledge of the population of clusters thanks to long-term multiwavelength efforts to follow up observations of these clusters. Aims. The advent of large area photometric surveys superseding previous, in-depth all-sky data allows us to revisit the construction of X-ray cluster catalogs, extending the study to lower cluster masses and higher redshifts and providing modeling of the selection function. Methods. We performed a wavelet detection of X-ray sources and made extensive simulations of the detection of clusters in the RASS data. We assigned an optical richness to each of the 24 788 detected X-ray sources in the 10 382 square degrees of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey area using red sequence cluster finder redMaPPer version 5.2 run on Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometry. We named this survey COnstrain Dark Energy with X-ray (CODEX) clusters. Results. We show that there is no obvious separation of sources on galaxy clusters and active galactic nuclei (AGN) based on the distribution of systems on their richness. This is a combination of an increasing number of galaxy groups and their selection via the identification of X-ray sources either by chance or by groups hosting an AGN. To clean the sample, we use a cut on the optical richness at the level corresponding to the 10% completeness of the survey and include it in the modeling of the cluster selection function. We present the X-ray catalog extending to a redshift of 0.6. Conclusions. The CODEX suvey is the first large area X-ray selected catalog of northern clusters reaching fluxes of 10−13 ergs s−1 cm−2. We provide modeling of the sample selection and discuss the redshift evolution of the high end of the X-ray luminosity function (XLF). 27. Two-Face: neutral and ionized light breeze in the local Universe

Abstract: The physical mechanism(s) driving the "quenching" of the star formation activity in galaxies, remains one of the least understood puzzles in the galaxy formation theoretical framework. According to the most recent theoretical models, the energetic feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is believed to provide an effective mechanism to eject the gas away from the galaxy by powerful winds in very massive galaxies. However, below halo masses of 1012Mo the galactic winds driven by the energy and momentum imprinted by massive stars to the surrounding ISM, are believed to be sufficiently energetic to eject the gas away from the galaxy potential well and stop the star formation. In order to unmasking the nature of these two quenching processes (AGN and SF), we analyzed a complete spectroscopic galaxy sample (~600 000 spectra) drawn from the SDSS to look for evidence of galactic winds in the local Universe. We focused on the shape of the [OIII]λ5007 emission line and interstellar Na I λ5890, 5895 (Na D) resonant line profiles as tracers of ionizing and neutral gas outflows, respectively. I will show how the average [OIII]λ5007 and NaD line profile changes as function of star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, disk inclination and nature of the dominant ionizing source in different BPT classes. We find that, statistically, only “Light Breeze" can be observed in the local Universe only in AGN dominated sources. For purely SF galaxies we do not observe ionized gas outflows regardless of the SFR level. Only at very high SFR we detect a blue-shifted NaD line profile, likely indicating bulk motion of neutral gas from the disk. The additional analysis of Manga IFU data for a galaxy subsample (~1000 galaxies) sheds light on the different nature of the [OIII]λ5007 and NaD line profile outflows. Both the integrated and spatially resolved data show that the galactic winds in local Universe have “Two Faces” which are related to two different ejection mechanisms, namely the neutral outflowing gas phase connected to the star formation rate along the galaxy disk and, the ionized winds related to the AGN feedback.

Abstract: By using a set of different star formation rate (SFR) indicators, including Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-infrared and H α emission, we study the slope of the main sequence (MS) of local star-forming galaxies at stellar masses larger than |$10^{10} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠. The slope of the relation strongly depends on the SFR indicator used. In all cases, the local MS shows a bending at high stellar masses with respect to the slope obtained in the low-mass regime. While the distribution of galaxies in the upper envelope of the MS is consistent with a lognormal distribution, the lower envelope shows an excess of galaxies, which increases as a function of the stellar mass but varies as a function of the SFR indicator used. The scatter of the best lognormal distribution increases with stellar mass from ∼0.3 dex at |$10^{10} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$| to ∼0.45 at |$10^{11} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$|⁠. The MS high-mass end is dominated by central galaxies of group-sized haloes with a red bulge and a disc redder than the lower mass counterparts. We argue that the MS bending in this region is due to two processes: (i) the formation of a bulge component as a consequence of the increased merger activity in groups, and (ii) the cold gas starvation induced by the hot halo environment, which cuts off the gas inflow on to the disc. Similarly, the increase of the MS scatter at high stellar masses would be explained by the larger spread of star formation histories of central group and cluster galaxies with respect to lower mass systems. Abstract: This paper documents the 16th data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS), the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the Southern Hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). We also preview future SDSS-V operations (due to start in 2020), and summarize plans for the final SDSS-IV data release (DR17)., Funding for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV has been provided by the Alfred P. Abstract: Large area catalogs of galaxy clusters constructed from ROSAT All Sky Survey provide the base for our knowledge on the population of clusters thanks to the long-term multiwavelength efforts on their follow-up. Advent of large area photometric surveys superseding in depth previous all-sky data allows us to revisit the construction of X-ray cluster catalogs, extending the study to lower cluster masses and to higher redshifts and to provide the modelling of the selection function. We perform a wavelet detection of X-ray sources and make extensive simulations of the detection of clusters in the RASS data. We assign an optical richness to each of the 24,788 detected X-ray sources in the 10,382 square degrees of SDSS BOSS area, using redMaPPer version 5.2. We name this survey COnstrain Dark Energy with X-ray (CODEX) clusters. We show that there is no obvious separation of sources on galaxy clusters and AGN, based on distribution of systems on their richness. This is a combination of increasing number of galaxy groups and their selection as identification of an X-ray sources either by chance or due to groups hosting an AGN. To clean the sample, we use a cut on the optical richness at the level corresponding to the 10\% completeness of the survey and include it into the modelling of cluster selection function. We present the X-ray catalog extending to a redshift of 0.6 down to X-ray fluxes of $10^{-13}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. Abstract: We use galaxy dynamical information to calibrate the richness-mass scaling relation of a sample of 428 galaxy clusters that are members of the CODEX sample with redshifts up to z~0.7. These clusters were X-ray selected using the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), cross-matched to associated systems in the redMaPPer catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The spectroscopic sample we analyze was obtained in the SPIDERS program and contains ~7800 red member galaxies. Adopting NFW mass and galaxy density profiles and a broad range of orbital anisotropy profiles, we use the Jeans equation to calculate halo masses. Modeling the scaling relation as $\lambda \propto \text{A}_{\lambda} {M_{\text{200c}}}^{\text{B}_{\lambda}} ({1+z})^{\gamma_{\lambda}}$, we find the parameter constraints $\text{A}_{\lambda}=38.6^{+3.1}_{-4.1}\pm3.9$, $\text{B}_{\lambda}=0.99^{+0.06}_{-0.07}\pm0.04$, and $\gamma_{\lambda}=-1.13^{+0.32}_{-0.34}\pm0.49$. We find good agreement with previously published mass trends with the exception of those from stacked weak lensing analyses. We note that although the lensing analyses failed to account for the Eddington bias, this is not enough to explain the differences. We suggest that differences in the levels of contamination between pure redMaPPer and RASS+redMaPPer samples could well contribute to these differences. The redshift trend we measure is more negative than but statistically consistent with previous results. We suggest that our measured redshift trend reflects a change in the cluster galaxy red sequence fraction with redshift, noting that the trend we measure is consistent with but somewhat stronger than an independently measured redshift trend in the red sequence fraction. We also examine the impact of a plausible model of correlated scatter in X-ray luminosity and optical richness, showing it has negligible impact on our results., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, published in MNRAS

Abstract: We analyze a complete spectroscopic sample of galaxies ($\sim$600,000 ) drawn from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, DR7) to look for evidence of galactic winds in the local Universe. We focus on the shape of the [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission line as a tracer of ionizing gas outflows. We stack our spectra in a fine grid of star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass to analyze the dependence of winds on the position of galaxies in the SFR versus mass diagram. We do not find any significant evidence of broad and shifted [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission line which we interpret as no evidence of outflowing ionized gas in the global population. We have also classified these galaxies as star-forming or AGN dominated according to their position in the standard BPT diagram. We show how the average [OIII]$\lambda$5007 profile changes as function of nature of the dominant ionizing source. We find that in the star-forming dominated source the oxygen line is symmetric and governed by the gravitational potential well. The AGN or composite AGN$\setminus$star-formation activity objects, in contrast, display a prominent and asymmetric profile that can be well described by a broad gaussian component that is blue-shifted from a narrow symmetric core. In particular, we find that the blue wings of the average [OIII]$\lambda$5007 profiles are increasingly prominent in the LINERs and Seyfert galaxies. We conclude that, in the low-redshift Universe, "pure" star-formation activity does not seem capable of driving ionized-gas outflows, while, the presence of optically selected AGN seems to play a primary role to drive such winds.
