In this short report we consider the possible manifestation of theory-of-mind skills by the recently proposed OpenAI's ChatGPT conversational agent. To tap into these skills, we used an indirect speech understanding task, the hinting task, and a new text version of a False Belief/False Photographs paradigm, and the Strange Stories paradigm. The hinting task is usually used to assess individuals with autism or schizophrenia by requesting them to infer hidden intentions from short conversations involving two characters. Our results show that the artificial model has quite limited performances on the Hinting task when either original scoring or revised SCOPE's rating scales are used. To better understand this limitation, we introduced slightly modified versions of the hinting task in which either cues about the presence of a communicative intention were added or a specific question about the character's intentions were asked. Only the latter demonstrated enhanced performances. In addition, the use of a False Belief/False Photographs paradigm to assess belief attribution skills demonstrates that ChatGPT keeps track of successive physical states of the world and may refer to a character's erroneous expectations about the world. No dissociation between the conditions was found. The Strange Stories were associated with correct performances but we could not be sure that the algorithm had no prior knowledge of it. These findings suggest that ChatGPT may answer about a character's intentions or beliefs when the question focuses on these mental states, but does not use such references spontaneously on a regular basis. This may guide AI designers to improve inference models by privileging mental states concepts in order to help chatbots having more natural conversations. This work offers an illustration of the possible application of psychological constructs and paradigms to a cognitive entity of a radically new nature, which leads to a reflection on the experimental methods that should in the future propose evaluation tools designed to allow the comparison of human performances and strategies with those of the machine.

This paper proposes a proof of concept of using natural language processing techniques to categorize valence of family relationships described in free texts written by french teenagers. The proposed study traces the evolution of techniques for word embedding. After decomposing the different texts in our possession into short texts composed of sentences and manual labeling, we tested different word embedding scenarios to train a multi-label classification model where a text can take several labels : labels describing the family link between the teenager and the person mentioned in the text and labels describing the teenager’s relationship with them positive/negative/neutral valence). The natural baseline for word vector representation of our texts is to build a TF-IDF and train classical classifiers (Elasticnet logistic regression, gradient boosting, random forest, support vector classifier) after selecting a model by cross validation in each class of machine learning models. We then studied the strengths of word-vectors embeddings by an advanced language representation technique via the CamemBERT transformer model, and, again, used them with classical classifiers to compare their respective performances. The last scenario consisted in augmenting the CamemBERT with output dense layers (perceptron) representing a classifier adapted to the multi-label classification and fine-tuning the CamemBERT original layers. The optimal fine-tuning depth that achieves a bias-variance trade-off was obtained by a cross-validation procedure. The results of the comparison of the three scenarios on a test dataset show a clear improvement of the classification performances of the scenario with fine-tuning beyond the baseline and of a simple vectorization using CamemBERT without fine-tuning. Despite the moderate size of the dataset and the input texts, fine-tuning to an optimal depth remains the best solution to build a classifier.

BackgroundThe determinants of quality of life (QoL) in schizophrenia are largely debated, mainly due to methodological discrepancies and divergence about the concepts concerned. As most studies have investigated bi- or tri-variate models, a multivariate model accounting for simultaneous potential mediations is necessary to have a comprehensive view of the determinants of QOL. We sought to estimate the associations between cognitive reserve, cognition, functioning, insight, depression, schizophrenic symptoms, and QoL in schizophrenia and their potential mediation relationships.MethodsWe used structural equation modeling with mediation analyses to test a model based on existing literature in a sample of 776 patients with schizophrenia from the FondaMental Foundation FACE-SZ cohort.ResultsOur model showed a good fit to the data. We found better functioning to be positively associated with a better QoL, whereas better cognition, better insight, higher levels of depression, and schizophrenic symptoms were associated with a lower QoL in our sample. Cognitive reserve is not directly linked to QoL, but indirectly in a negative manner via cognition. We confirm the negative relationship between cognition and subjective QoL which was previously evidenced by other studies; moreover, this relationship seems to be robust as it survived in our multivariate model. It was not explained by insight as some suggested, thus the mechanism at stake remains to be explained.ConclusionThe pathways to subjective QoL in schizophrenia are complex and the determinants largely influence each other. Longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm these cross-sectional findings.

International audience; The determinants of metacognition are still poorly understood in bipolar disorders (BD). We aimed to examine the clinical determinants of metacognition, defined as the agreement between objective and subjective cognition in individuals with BD. The participants consisted of 281 patients with BD who underwent an extensive neuropsychological battery and clinical evaluation. To assess subjective cognition, participants provided a general rating of their estimated cognitive difficulties. Clinical characteristics of BD were also recorded, along with medication. We studied the potential moderation of the association between cognitive complaints and global objective cognitive performance by several clinical variables with ordinal logistic regressions. Depression and impulsivity were associated with greater cognitive complaints. The only variable that moderated the relationship between objective and subjective cognition in the global model was the prescription of antipsychotics. Patients taking antipsychotics had a poorer association between cognitive complaints and objective neuropsychological performance. This result suggests a role for dopamine in the modulation of metacognitive performance, and calls for the systematic control of antipsychotic medication in future studies documenting metacognitive deficits in severe and persistent mental disorders. Depression and impulsivity should be investigated as potential therapeutic targets for individuals with BD and cognitive complaints, before proposing an extensive neuropsychological evaluation.

The interest in social cognition in schizophrenia is justified by the relationship between deficits in these skills and negative functional outcomes. Although assessment batteries have already been described, there is no consensus about which measures are useful in predicting patient functioning or quality of life (QoL). We investigated a set of five measures of recognition of facial emotions, theory of mind (ToM), and empathy in a cohort of 143 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder at inclusion and, amongst whom 79 were reassessed 1 year later. The distribution was satisfactory for the TREF (Facial Emotion Recognition Task), V-SIR (Versailles-Situational Intention Reading), and QCAE (Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy). Internal consistency was satisfactory for the TREF, V-SIR, V-Comics (Versailles Intention Attribution Task), and QCAE. Sensitivity to change was acceptable for the TREF. The TREF and V-SIR showed a cross-sectional relationship with functioning beyond the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia but not beyond neurocognition. Moreover, the TREF and V-SIR at inclusion could not predict functioning one year later, whereas most neurocognitive and clinical dimensions at inclusion could. Finally, only affective QCAE showed a significant cross-sectional, but not longitudinal, association with QoL. In conclusion, the TREF had satisfactory psychometric properties and showed a cross-sectional, but not longitudinal, association with objective outcome measures, thus appearing to be reliable in clinical practice and research. The V-SIR also showed promising psychometric properties, despite a possible weakness to detect change. However, these measures should be interpreted within the context of the good predictive power of the neurocognitive and clinical status on the outcome.

International audience; Introduction: Deficits in theory of mind (ToM) can vary depending on the predominant schizophrenia symptoms, and though most neurocognitive functions are involved in ToM, all may not be associated with the same symptoms. With consideration to the relationships between symptoms, neurocognition and ToM, the aim of the present study is to identify the neurocognitive functions influencing ToM capacities according to symptomatic profile. Methods: The study is based on a sample of 124 adults with schizophrenia from a French national cohort. Patients were divided into two groups according to their scores on the five Wallwork factors of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale using hierarchical clustering before carrying out multivariable analyses. Results: The “disorganised group” (n = 89) showed high scores on the disorganised factor, and had a ToM associated with reasoning, visual recognition and speed of processing. The “positive group” (n = 35) showed high scores on the positive and depressive factors, and had a ToM associated with working memory. Conclusions: These results suggest that neurocognitive predictors of ToM in schizophrenia are different according to the predominant clinical dimension, thus refining our knowledge of the relationship between symptoms, neurocognition and ToM, and acknowledging their status as important predictors of patients’ functional status. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Resume Le but de cette communication etait de resumer l’etat des connaissances sur les liens entre fonctionnement psychosocial et cognition sociale dans la schizophrenie. La cognition sociale, et en particulier la Theorie de l’Esprit, est perturbee dans la schizophrenie. La litterature retrouve une plus forte association entre fonctionnement psychosocial et les performances en Theorie de l’Esprit qu’entre fonctionnement et mesures de la cognition dite froide (definie comme l’ensemble des processus de traitement de l’information de nature non sociale, par opposition a la cognition sociale). Cette influence serait mediee par les competences sociales. Des etudes longitudinales ont montre que, dans ces associations, la direction de causalite etait unique et partait des troubles de la cognition froide vers les troubles de la cognition sociale, ces derniers entrainant les deficits fonctionnels. Dans une etude utilisant des modeles d’equations structurales, les niveaux de symptomes positifs, de desorganisation et de symptomes negatifs etaient tous les trois fortement lies a une alteration du fonctionnement. L’effet de la desorganisation et les symptomes negatifs sur le fonctionnement etaient en partie medies par la cognition sociale, contrairement aux symptomes positifs. Cette revue de litterature suggere que l’amelioration de la cognition sociale pourrait permettre d’ameliorer le fonctionnement psychosocial dans la schizophrenie.

Aims Establishing the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) in functioning and cognition is essential to the interpretation of the research and clinical work conducted in bipolar disorders (BD). The present study aimed to estimate the MCID for the Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST) and a battery of neuropsychological tests in BD. Methods Anchor-based and distributive methods were used to estimate the MCID for the FAST and cognition using data from a large, multicentre, observational cohort of individuals with BD. The FAST and cognition were linked with the Clinical Global Impressions Scale-Severity (CGI-S) and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) using an equipercentile method. The magnitude of the standard error measurement (s.e.m.) provided another estimate of the MCID. Results In total, 570 participants were followed for 2 years. Cross-sectional CGI-S and GAF scores were linked to a threshold ⩽7 on the FAST for functional remission. The MCID for the FAST equalled 8- or 9-points change from baseline using the CGI-S and GAF. One s.e.m. on the FAST corresponded to 7.6-points change from baseline. Cognitive variables insufficiently correlated with anchor variables (all ρ s.e.m. for cognitive variables corresponded to a range of 0.45 to 0.93-s.d. change from baseline. Conclusions These findings support the value of the estimated MCID for the FAST and cognition and may be a useful tool to evaluate cognitive and functional remediation effects and improve patient functional outcomes in BD. The CGI-S and GAF were inappropriate anchors for cognition. Further studies may use performance-based measures of functioning instead.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to design a questionnaire, the Versailles Metacognitive Strategies Evaluation Questionnaire, for assessing the use of metacognitive and help-seeking strategies in three key-domains of impaired daily functioning in schizophrenia. To evaluate its psychometric properties (internal consistency, factor structure, convergent and divergent validity, and stability). Design: Development of a questionnaire and psychometric validation procedure in patients with schizophrenia compared with healthy controls. Stability over one year was assessed in the patient group. Setting: Schizophrenia Centers of Expertise (French FondaMental Network). Subjects: A total of 141 patients with schizophrenia, among whom 77 participated in the second evaluation; 97 healthy subjects. Main measures: The Versailles Metacognitive Strategies Evaluation Questionnaire, Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale, Personal and Social Performance Scale, Evaluation of Cognitive Processes involved in Disability in Schizophrenia Scale, Schizophrenia Quality of Life Questionnaire, and Stages of Recovery Instrument. Results: From the 36-items version, stepwise exploratory factor analysis (oblimin) produced a 25-items scale which had a 3-factors structure (hygiene concern, social relationships, and hygiene help-seeking). Cronbach’s were respectively equal to 0.91, 0.82, and 0.78. One-year stability was good (intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.7). The three factors showed good convergent validity with measures of quality of life (rho = 0.34, P ⩽ 0.001). The first two factors correlated with recovery ( N = 34, rho = 0.53, P ⩽ 0.001). On the contrary, the factors exhibited divergent validity, with no significant correlation, with symptoms and cognitive and psychosocial functioning ( P > 0.05). Factor structure in healthy controls did not match with that of patients, all items but one were found significantly different among groups. Conclusion: The Versailles Metacognitive Strategies Evaluation Questionnaire provides a simple and valid means to assess metacognitive strategies in individuals with schizophrenia.

Objective: The aim of this study is to review published research on treatment of social cognition impairments in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).Methods: Following the PRISMA guidelines, a PubMed literature search was conducted, followed by a manual search in recently published papers. Main criteria for selection were that patients had sustained a TBI, and that social cognition was the main target of treatment. A total of 16 papers and three reviews were selected and included in the present review.Results: Five studies (including three randomized controlled trials (RCT)) addressed facial affect recognition, one study specifically addressed emotional prosody, two RCTs used a combination of treatment strategies addressing social perception deficits. Six studies, including two RCTs, addressed social communication skills or theory of mind. Finally, two RCTs reported the effectiveness of a more global approach, addressing multiple domains of social cognition, such as emotion perception, social skills training, and theory of mind.Discussion/conclusion: Although there has been much less research on treatment of social cognition in patients with TBI as compared with psychiatric conditions, the findings reported in the present review are encouraging. Further multicenter large-scale RCTs are needed, with special emphasis on the generalization of treatment effects to social skills in everyday life.

Resume Les dernieres annees ont apporte de nombreuses innovations dans le domaine de la remediation des troubles cognitifs participant a la genese de l’alteration du fonctionnement des patients atteints de schizophrenie. Parmi les programmes ciblant la cognition sociale a disposition des services de soins francophones, ToMRemed peut aujourd’hui beneficier du retour d’experience de la part des equipes (nous comptons 146 soignants formes en France) l’employant regulierement, contribuant a determiner ses principales proprietes et son impact. Utilise en groupes de patients, animes par des soignants, ce traitement cible specifiquement l’attribution d’intentions a autrui et les facultes metacognitives qui lui sont associees. L’harmonisation de la formation a l’usage de ToMRemed a contribue au recueil de donnees cliniques en soins courants de 110 patients pris en charge dans 11 centres en France. Nous rapportons ici les principales modifications cliniques et cognitives constatees indiquant une amelioration des performances mesurees a une echelle cognitive liee a la therapie (Versailles – lecture intentionnelle en situation). Les donnees rapportees sont conformes aux ameliorations attendues et rapportees dans la litterature. De plus, en l’absence de facteur predictif clinique ou sociodemographique de l’amelioration cognitive, nous n’identifions pas de population de patients atteints de schizophrenie et presentant un trouble du fonctionnement social, echappant a l’indication d’un tel entrainement. Les limitations de la presente etude sont cependant a prendre en compte, notamment concernant l’absence de groupe temoin et la presence de biais de selection (les patients inclus sont ceux qui ont beneficie de l’ensemble du module ToMRemed et qui ont ete reevalues ensuite).

It is now largely accepted that patients with schizophrenia have a deficit to attribute mental states to others, such as intentions, needs and motivations but also to perform memory tasks. According to one hypothesis, these impairments may be due to an early visual attention deficit during the encounter of social stimuli. Another hypothesis posits a robust correlation between intention attribution and autobiographical memory that results in impaired recollection of past events making it difficult to infer others’ intentions. In sum, the link between intention attribution and encoding process is yet to be explored in patients with schizophrenia. The objective of the present study is to contribute to this debate by investigating whether schizophrenic patients’ recollection can be boosted by an attentional cueing on relevant information and to determine the influence of two different situational contexts: attribution of intentions or physical causality scripts. By using a supraliminal attentional cue, we made relevant areas of our material more salient across two conditions: attribution of intentions (AI) and physical causality with human characters (PCCH). The results confirmed expected deficit of explicit memory in schizophrenia patients while attentional cueing on relevant areas for intentions attribution or physical causality had no effect on recollection in any group. However, it seems that the recollection performances are highly influenced by the nature of intentions attribution. Also, it is the first time that the material used for the assessment of theory of mind performances has been tested with a recognition test.

International audience; Background: Up to half of the patients with schizophrenia attempt suicide during their lifetime. Better insight is associated with better functioning but also with increased suicidality. The direction of the relationship between insight and suicidality is not clear, hence we aimed to provide new elements using structural equation modeling. Methods: Insight, quality of life (QoL), depression, and suicidality were measured at baseline and at 12 months in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The relationships between these variables were investigated by latent difference score models, controlling for chlorpromazine doses, positive and negative symptoms, and general psychopathology. Results: 738 patients were included, and 370 completed the study. Baseline levels of insight predicted changes in suicidality, whereas baseline levels of suicidality did not predict changes in insight, suggesting that better insight underlies suicidality and predicts its worsening. Our results suggest this temporal sequence: better insight → worse QoL → increased depression → increased suicidality, while insight also affects the three variables in parallel. Conclusion: Better insight predicts a worsening of QoL, depression and suicidality. These findings contribute to our global understanding of the longitudinal influence of insight on suicidality. We advocate that insight-targeted interventions should not be proposed without the monitoring of depression and suicide prevention.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the validity of the Evaluation of Cognitive Processes involved in Disability in Schizophrenia scale (ECPDS) to discriminate for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Design: This multicentre cross-sectional study used a validation design with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Settings: The study was undertaken in a French network of seven outward referral centres. Subjects: We recruited individuals with clinically stable schizophrenia diagnosed based on the Structured Clinical Interview for assessing Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., rev.; DSM-IV-R) criteria. Main measures: The index test for cognitive impairment was ECPDS (independent variable), a 13-item scale completed by a relative of the participant. The reference standard was a standardized test battery that evaluated seven cognitive domains. Cognitive impairment was the dependent variable and was defined as an average z-score more than 1 SD below the normative mean in two or more cognitive domains. Results: Overall, 97 patients were included (67 with schizophrenia, 28 with schizoaffective disorder, and 2 with schizophreniform disorder). The mean age was 30.2 (SD 7.7) years, and there were 75 men (77.3%). There were 59 (60.8%) patients with cognitive impairment on the neuropsychological battery, and the mean ECPDS score was 27.3 (SD 7.3). The ROC curve analysis showed that the optimal ECPDS cut-off was 29.5. The area under the curve was 0.77, with 76.3% specificity and 71.1% sensitivity to discriminate against cognitive impairment. Conclusion: The ECPDS is a valid triage tool for detecting cognitive impairment in schizophrenia, before using an extensive neuropsychological battery, and holds promise for use in everyday clinical practice.

International audience; The functional outcome in schizophrenia spectrum disorders is affected by multiple factors such as cognitive performance and clinical symptoms. Psychiatric disability may be another important determinant of functional outcome. The purpose of this study was to test whether schizophrenia symptoms and psychiatric disability mediated the association between cognition and functioning. Between April 2013 and July 2017, we included 108 community-dwelling adults with stable schizophrenia spectrum disorder in a multicenter study. Psychiatric disability was assessed with the Evaluation of Cognitive Processes involved in Disability in Schizophrenia (ECPDS) scale by relatives of patients. ECPDS focused on the broad array of motivational, neurocognitive, sociocognitive, and metacognitive impairments that result in activity restrictions. We used a battery of tests to assess seven cognition domains (processing speed, attention/vigilance, working, verbal and visual memory, reasoning and problem solving, and executive functioning) and cross-sectional structural equation modeling (SEM) for the mediation analyses. We estimated the one-year temporal stability of ECPDS scores in 45 participants. The model provided showed good fit and explained 43.9% of the variance in functioning. The effect of neurocognition on functioning was fully mediated by symptoms (proportion mediated: 36.5%) and psychiatric disability (proportion mediated: 31.3%). The ECPDS score had acceptable one-year temporal stability. The ECPDS scale has satisfactory psychometric properties, and shows significant convergence with neurocognition and functioning, suggesting a role for this tool in the routine evaluation of cognitive remediation needs. Our model validates psychiatric disability as a crucial step from cognitive impairment to restricted participation in life situations.

The present study investigated the ERP correlates of the integration of emotional prosody to the emotional meaning of a spoken word. Thirty-four nonclinical participants listened to negative and positive words that were spoken with an angry or happy prosody and classified the emotional valence of the word meaning while ignoring emotional prosody. Social anhedonia was also self-rated by the subjects. Compared to congruent trials, incongruent ones elicited slower and less accurate behavioral responses, and a smaller P300 component at the brain response level. The present data suggest that vocal emotional information is salient enough to be integrated early in verbal processing. The P300 amplitude modulation by the prosody-meaning congruency positively correlated with the social anhedonia score, suggesting that the sensitivity of the electrical brain response to emotional prosody increased with social anhedonia. Interpretations of this result in terms of emotional processing in social anhedonia are discussed.

Although many instruments measure empathy, most of them focus on specific facets (e.g., Spreng et al., 2009) or specific contexts (e.g. Wang et al., 2003) of empathy. For this reason, the Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy (QCAE; Reniers et al., 2011) was recently built to grasp the general construct of empathy through its Affective-Cognitive duality, although not providing clear-cut results about the bidimensionality of the scale. In this study, Confirmatory Factor Analyses were conducted on the responses of 418 adults on the French QCAE (backtranslated for this study). A total of 8 models were tested - including the models of the original investigation. The 5-correlated factors model had the best fit, and the pattern of correlations between the factors did not support the Cognitive-Affective distinction. The QCAE is discussed as showing signs of psychometrical robustness, but also as a tool that is more 5-dimensional than bidimensional.

BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is associated with poor theory of mind (ToM), particularly in the attribution of intentions to others. It is also associated with abnormal gaze behaviours and contextual processing. This study investigated to what extent impaired ToM in patients with schizophrenia is related to abnormal processing of social context. METHODS We evaluated ToM using a nonverbal intention attribution task based on comic strips depicting social/nonsocial and contextual/noncontextual events while eye movements were recorded. Eye-tracking was used to assess processing time dedicated to visual cues contained in regions of interest identified in a pilot study. We measured cognitive contextual control on a separate task. RESULTS We tested 29 patients with schizophrenia and 29 controls. Compared with controls, patients were slower in intention attribution but not in physical reasoning. They looked longer than controls at contextual cues displayed in the first 2 context pictures of the comic strips, and this difference was greater for intention attribution than for physical reasoning. We found no group difference in time spent looking at noncontextual cues. Patients' impairment in contextual control did not explain their increased reaction time and gaze duration on contextual cues during intention attribution. LIMITATIONS Difficulty may not have been equivalent between intention attribution and physical reasoning conditions. CONCLUSION Overall, schizophrenia was characterized by a delay in intention attribution related to a slowdown of social context processing that was not explained by worse executive contextual control.

This article discusses the important advances in a recent field of science dealing with the brain processes implicated in understanding social situations and interacting with others. Many behavioral studies on schizophrenia have shown the impairment of these processes and their preferential relation with disorganization and negative syndromes. Brain imaging is a powerful method to identify brain systems participating in these processes in healthy subjects and will be used increasingly to study mental disorders such as schizophrenia. A few preliminary studies have opened this field of research and allowed for the drawing of some limited conclusions. We emphasize the importance of developing an integrated neurocognitive framework to account for the multifaceted nature of social cognition deficits in schizophrenia. Inspired by contemporary models of empathy and social cognition that identify different components such as shared representation, mentalizing, self/other distinction, we show how schizophrenia affects these components at the behavioral and functional levels. We also outline the interest of this model to understand putative abnormalities of contextual integration within the area of mentalization. Finally, we discuss how specialized measures of brain functions during the performance of these precisely defined mental processes might be used as outcome predictors.

Numerous behavioral and electrophysiological studies have provided evidence of abnormal semantic processing in schizophrenia. However, the neural basis of these deficits is poorly understood. We investigated magnetic cortical responses elicited by a word-pair lexical decision task in 20 patients with schizophrenia and 12 healthy control subjects. The task involved presentation of a prime word (200 ms), followed by a blank (250 ms), and then a target stimulus (1200 ms); the subject had to decide whether the target was a real word or not. During this task, bilateral temporal and left prefrontal activations were observed in both groups. However, in contrast to controls, patients with schizophrenia did not show increased activation in the left temporal and anterior cingulate cortices between 200 and 450 ms in response to semantic incongruity. These results suggested that schizophrenia was associated with a functional disturbance in some semantic regions that gave rise to the N400 component. Moreover, a significant modulation in the right temporal cortex was observed in patients, but not in controls. This suggested the existence of alternative processes in patients because both groups showed similar behavioral priming. Finally, we elucidated some functional abnormalities in the semantic network during prime word processing in patients, indicated by prolonged activation compared to healthy controls. Thus, in addition to context integration impairment, abnormal activations during the prime word provided new evidence of context processing deficits in schizophrenia.

Resume L’objectif de cette etude etait de tester l’impact du deficit contextuel sur l’activation et la mise a jour de la representation des etats mentaux d’autrui dans la schizophrenie. Dix-sept participants atteints de schizophrenie et 17 participants temoins ont complete une tâche de comprehension comprenant 72 histoires se terminant par une phrase litterale ou ironique en fonction du contexte. Chaque histoire etait suivie d’une question portant sur le contenu factuel ou sur l’etat mental du personnage. Les analyses ont montre que les performances des participants atteints de schizophrenie aux questions mentales portant sur des histoires litterales etaient comparables a celles des participants temoins, indiquant qu’ils etaient capables d’utiliser le contexte pour activer une representation coherente des etats mentaux d’autrui. Cependant, les participants atteints de schizophrenie faisaient plus d’erreurs que les participants temoins aux questions mentales portant sur des histoires ironiques, traduisant des difficultes dans les situations ambigues dans lesquelles un retour au contexte est necessaire pour mettre a jour l’etat mental represente. Ces resultats designent les processus de contextualisation retroactifs comme une cible pour la remediation cognitive.

Schizophrenia is characterized by the impairment of several facets of social cognition. This has been demonstrated in numerous studies that focused on specific aspects of social cognition such as the attribution of intentions, emotions, or false beliefs to others. However, most of these studies relied on complex verbal descriptions or impoverished social stimuli. In the present study, we evaluated a new task (Versailles-Situational Intention Reading, V-SIR) that is based on video excerpts depicting complex real-life scenes of social interactions. Subjects were required to rate the probabilities of several affirmations of the intentions of one of the characters. The V-SIR task was administered to schizophrenic patients ( N =15), depressed patients ( N =12), manic patients ( N =15), and healthy controls ( N =15). The performance of schizophrenic patients was significantly impaired in comparison to healthy and depressed subjects. There was a trend toward a significant difference between schizophrenic and manic patients. Manic patients also demonstrated impaired performance relative to healthy subjects. Schizophrenic patients' V-SIR scores were significantly correlated with their scores on another attribution of intentions task that used comic strips. These results show that tasks based on more ecological stimuli are powerful enough to detect theory-of-mind abnormalities in pathological populations such as schizophrenic patients.

Resume En pratique, la mise en evidence de troubles cognitifs specifiques des pathologies mentales et de leurs correlats neurofonctionnels devrait avoir pour consequence une reconsideration de la maniere de definir et d'evaluer les signes cliniques. En particulier, les progres issus du developpement de la cognition sociale offrent un cadre de comprehension de certaines dimensions symptomatiques de la schizophrenie. Les patrons d'activites cerebrales associes a plusieurs composantes des processus mentaux sous-tendant le comportement social, la mentalisation, et la communication sont maintenant objectives par les techniques de neuro-imagerie. Nous prendrons l'exemple de l'attribution d'etats mentaux a autrui qui met en jeu particulierement le cortex prefrontal medial au sein d'un reseau fonctionnel complexe. Cette activite mentale constituerait un element clef de la communication interhumaine. Il a ete montre qu'elle serait deficiente dans la schizophrenie, cela en lien avec la desorganisation clinique. Or, l'entretien clinique constitue justement une situation de communication appropriee pour la mise en evidence de cette anomalie cognitive. Ainsi, nous montrons, dans le cadre du modele propose par Hardy-Bayle et al., qu'il est possible de definir des symptomes plus specifiques des troubles de la communication schizophreniques bases sur la sollicitation des processus dysfonctionnels par l'utilisation de contraintes conversationnelles.

Chronometric properties of theory of mind and intentions understanding more specifically are well documented. Notably, it was demonstrated using magnetoencephalography that the brain regions involved were recruited as soon as 200 ms post-stimulus. We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to characterize an electrophysiological marker of attribution of intentions. We also explored the robustness of this ERP signature under two conditions corresponding to either explicit instructions to focus on others’ intentions or implicit instructions with no reference to mental states. Two matched groups of 16 healthy volunteers each received either explicit or no instructions about intentions and performed a nonverbal attribution of intentions task based on sequential four-image comic strips depicting either intentional or physical causality. A bilateral posterior positive component, ranging from 250 to 650 ms post-stimulus, showed greater amplitude in intentional than in physical condition (the intention ERP effect). This effect occurs during the third image only, suggesting that it reflects the integration of information depicted in the third image to the contextual cues given by the first two. The intention effect was similar in the two groups of subjects. Overall, our results identify a clear ERP marker of the first hundreds of milliseconds of intentions processing probably related to a contextual integrative mechanism and suggest its robustness by showing its blindness to task demands manipulation.

International audience; Advances in the use of virtual affective agents for therapeutic purposes in mental health opened a research avenue to improve the way patients interpret other's behavior as helpful instead of menacing. Here, the authors propose an original paradigm based on affective computing and virtual reality technologies requiring the assessment of helping intentions as well as self-monitoring metacognition. Sixteen healthy subjects played a 38-turns card games with a virtual affective agent (MARC) during which they had to guess between two cards the one that would be color-matched with another card. Their guesses could be oriented by the agent's emotional displays. Three subjective ratings on a percentage analog scale were recorded after each trial: helpfulness, self- monitoring, and sympathy. Help recognition and self-monitoring metacognitive ratings raise the question of the importance to enhance both components in therapeutic situations within psychiatric populations. Overall, this study exemplifies the promising use of virtual reality settings for future studies in the medical psychology field.

With regards to the neurocognitive deficits and cognitive bias of schizophrenic disorders, it may be hypothesized that these patients suffer a deficit in recognizing helping intentions in others. To investigate help recognition, new technologies allowing to control an interaction with virtual affective agents were used with an adaptation of a previously described card-guessing paradigm (project COMPARSE ANR-11-EMCO-0007). We investigated whether the same game proposed successively by two virtual agents asking either empathetic (i.e. on the subject's feelings) or non-empathetic (i.e. on technical aspects of the game) questions to the participant would elicit different interpretations on their intentions. Dependent variables consisted of monetary allocation to the virtual agent, of questionnaires assessing the agent's help, interest, attention, etc. A group of 20 individuals with schizophrenia and one of 20 healthy controls, matched on gender, with comparable age, estimated verbal-IQ and educational level were recruited. The healthy subjects’ ratings of the virtual agent's behavior demonstrated that they interpreted empathetic questioning as helping and rewarded it positively with an increased monetary allocation. Schizophrenic patients had a qualitatively reduced perception of the differences between the two agents. Only the rating concerning the “interest/attention” of the agent toward them exhibited medium effect size when contrasting conditions. Hypothetically, schizophrenic patients take into account the fact they are the object of another's attention, but may fail to infer the intentional meaning and to provide an increased monetary allocation.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

The relation of social cognitive disorders and schizophrenic symptoms are well-established. Yet, assessment methods have not reached a consensus. In addition, causal paths between neurocognition, social cognition, symptoms and functional expression are not clearly understood. During the past few years, some authoritative accounts proposed specialized batteries of tests and emphasized theory of mind, emotion recognition, and interpretation bias constructs:– NIMH's “Social cognition psychometric evaluation” battery (Pinkham AE, Penn DL, Green MF, Harvey PD. Schizophrenia Bulletin, 2015);– “Social cognition and functioning in schizophrenia” (Green MF, Lee J, Ochsner KN. Schizophrenia Bulletin, 2013).Interestingly, these accounts stemming either from expert consensus and psychometric considerations or from neuroscience knowledge recognized some difficulties in providing a fully usable set of instruments. The project described here (EVACO protocol, funded by the Programme Hospitalier de Recherche Clinique national) follows an alternative approach and aims at providing a psychometrically validated battery. Based on a cognitive neuropsychology view on schizophrenic functional disability, several tests were gathered and are assessed in a 12-months multi-center follow-up of 160 individuals with schizophrenia. The FondaMental foundation network of Expert Centers is involved in recruiting patients from eight centers (Clermont-Ferrand, Colombes, Créteil, Grenoble, Marseille, Montpellier, Strasbourg, Versailles). To-date, the first evaluation of the population has been achieved. Experience reports and inclusions follow-up demonstrate the good acceptability of this battery both on the patients and the evaluator's side. International audience; Schizophrenia is associated with abnormal cortical activation during theory of mind (ToM), as demonstrated by several fMRI or PET studies. Electrical and temporal characteristics of these abnormalities, especially in the early stages, remain unexplored. Nineteen medicated schizophrenic patients and 21 healthy controls underwent magnetoencephalography (MEG) recording to measure brain response evoked by nonverbal stimuli requiring mentalizing. Three conditions based on comic-strips were contrasted: attribution of intentions to others (AI), physical causality with human characters (PCCH), and physical causality with objects (PCOB). Minimum norm localization was performed in order to select regions of interest (ROIs) within bilateral temporal and parietal regions that showed significant ToM-related activations in the control group. Time-courses of each ROI were compared across group and condition. Reduced cortical activation within the 200 to 600 ms time-window was observed in the selected regions in patients. Significant group by condition interactions (i.e., reduced modulation in patients) were found in right posterior superior temporal sulcus, right temporoparietal junction, and right inferior parietal lobule during attribution of intentions. As in healthy controls, the presence of characters elicited activation in patients' left posterior temporal regions and temporoparietal junction. No group difference on evoked responses' latencies in AI was found. In conclusion, ToM processes in the early stages are functionally impaired in schizophrenia. MEG provides a promising means to refine our knowledge on schizophrenic social cognitive disorders.

Representation of others' actions and mental states leads to the activation of several brain networks: the mentalizing and the "mirror neuron" systems as well as a "low level" social perception component. However, respective activations of the regions belonging to these networks remain unknown with respect to chronometrical data when static drawing stimuli are presented. To determine anatomical and temporal characteristics of theory of mind processes, magnetic signals were measured in 21 subjects during a validated nonverbal attribution of intentions task. Minimum norm estimation provides chronometric and localization data showing that regions known to be involved in the mentalizing, "mirror neuron" and social perception networks have simultaneous activations between 100 and 700 ms post-stimulus, a period which may be thought as corresponding to early stages of social processes. Among some regions, different profiles as well as modulations regarding experimental conditions suggest functional distinctions between these structures, pleading for a cooperative nature of these networks. While the left temporo-parietal area and superior temporal sulcus seem more specialized in social cues coding, we demonstrate that their right homologues, as well as the right inferior parietal cortex, are preferentially recruited during attribution of intentions stimuli compared to scenarios based on physical causality from 200 to 600 ms.

La pratique psychiatrique est amenée à intégrer de plus en plus de moyens spécialisés d’évaluation des capacités cognitives des patients schizophrènes. Évaluer ces facultés revêt un intérêt tout particulier du fait de leurs corrélations significatives, même partielles, avec le pronostic fonctionnel, autrement dit le handicap. De plus, les mesures des capacités cognitives sont directement en lien avec les moyens de remédiation cognitive dont l’intérêt thérapeutique est établi. En tant que domaine particulier du traitement de l’information, un nombre croissant de travaux a mis en lumière les spécificités neurofonctionnelles des processus permettant de comprendre les états mentaux et affectifs d’autrui. Sous les intitulés de reconnaissance émotionnelle, perception sociale, représentations partagées, prise de perspective, théorie de l’esprit, ou empathie sont identifiés des processus et des représentations dont la faillite impacte les capacités relationnelles des patients. Au stade actuel des connaissances, il n’existe pas de consensus sur les moyens de mesure pertinents et leur éventuelle hiérarchisation à des fins cliniques. Des propositions de batterie sont en cours d’évaluation et de déploiement. Pour aller plus avant, à l’encontre du réductionnisme scientifique prédominant, nous développons ici l’idée qu’aux côtés des évaluations fondées sur des mesures de construits cognitifs sociaux distincts et validés par les neurosciences sociales, de nouvelles méthodes sont à concevoir pour tester les capacités d’interaction sociale. Une approche « naturalistique » fondée sur la multi-modalité, la contextualisation et la mise en situation est rendue possible avec le développement des techniques de réalité virtuelle. Celles-ci constituent une voie prometteuse pour concilier deux besoins scientifiques apparemment contradictoires : d’une part, le besoin de complexifier les stimuli sociaux en les rendant réalistes, interactifs, partiellement prévisibles, et immersifs, et d’autre part, le besoin d’assurer la réplicabilité et la standardisation des mesures. Notre propos s’appuiera sur les résultats à mi-parcours du projet ANR COMPARSE.

Since the nineties, the study of social cognition has benefited from advances in neuroimaging that allowed to cartography the “social brain”. The available literature reports results of PET or fMRI experiments that globally agree on the topography of the cortical regions involved in understanding/representing other's persons. Among these regions, medial prefrontal structures, the sensorimotor cortex, the temporoparietal cortex including the superior temporal sulcus have been implicated in different aspects of social cognition. Brain cartography was successful in separating networks that detect/process social cues from those that maintain shared representations (mirror system), or process inferences about others’ mental states (mentalization or theory of mind system). Although the neural bases of these systems are distinguished in many experiments, their mutual relations are yet hypothetical. Moreover, their main cognitive characteristics, such as their explicit/implicit or automatic/controlled nature, are mostly unknown. The use of cognitive electrophysiology (EEG and MEG) appears promising as a way to address these issues. Recent works based on these techniques demonstrate that theory of mind inferences are related with magnetic activation of the temporo-parietal junction as soon as 300 to 500 milliseconds post-stimuli when comic-strips with intentional characters are presented to subjects. Furthermore, these activations are modulated by top-down influences such as prior instructions urging the subjects to focus on the characters’ mental states. These results will be discussed with respect to their impact on schizophrenia research.

Bipolar disorders and schizophrenia are among the most severe mental disorders regarding their impact on daily life.The management of these disorders recently shifted from a mostly medical approach focusing on symptom remission towards a more integrative approach aiming at improving other outcomes, such as quality of life or psychosocial functioning.A collaboration between the Ministries of Health and Research and the Fondamental Foundation permitted the creation of cohorts of patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, incorporating multidimensional measures (clinical, psychosocial, cognitive, …) over several years of follow-up.This doctoral work consisted in exploiting these data collected by the Fondamental Foundation in order to create structural equation models to explain phenomena observed in those mental disorders. First, we modeled the longitudinal relationships between cognition and psychosocial functioning in patients with bipolar disorder. Then, we created a model of the longitudinal relationships between insight, quality of life, depression and suicidality in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Finally, we sought to identify the cross-sectionnal correlates of quality of life in schizophrenia.Our results allowed us to draw several conclusions which may help managing schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Also, we advocate the use of structural equation modeling in psychiatry.; Les troubles bipolaires et la schizophrénie comptent parmi les troubles mentaux les plus sévères en termes de répercussions sur la vie quotidienne. Proficient recognition of facial expression is crucial for social interaction. Behaviour, event-related potentials (ERPs), and eye-tracking techniques can be used to investigate the underlying brain mechanisms supporting this seemingly effortless processing of facial expression. Facial expression recognition involves not only the extraction of expressive information from diagnostic facial features, known as part-based processing, but also the integration of featural information, known as configural processing. Despite the critical role of diagnostic features in emotion recognition and extensive research in this area, it is still not known how the brain decodes configural information in terms of emotion recognition. The complexity of facial information integration becomes evident when comparing performance between healthy subjects and individuals with schizophrenia because those patients tend to process featural information on emotional faces. The different ways in examining faces possibly impact on social-cognitive ability in recognizing emotions. Therefore, this thesis investigates the role of diagnostic features and face configuration in the recognition of facial expression. In addition to behavior, we examined both the spatiotemporal dynamics of fixations using eye-tracking, and early neurocognitive sensitivity to face as indexed by the P100 and N170 ERP components. In order to address the questions, we built a new set of sketch face stimuli by transforming photographed faces from the Radboud Faces Database through the removal of facial texture and retaining only the diagnostic features (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth) with neutral and four facial expressions - anger, sadness, fear, happiness. Sketch faces supposedly impair configural processing in comparison with photographed faces, resulting in increased sensitivity to diagnostic features through part-based processing. The direct comparison of neurocognitive measures between sketch and photographed faces expressing basic emotions has never been tested. In this thesis, we examined (i) eye fixations as a function of stimulus type, and (ii) neuroelectric response to experimental manipulations such face inversion and deconfiguration. The use of these methods aimed to reveal which face processing drives emotion recognition and to establish neurocognitive markers of emotional sketch and photographed faces processing. Overall, the behavioral results showed that sketch faces convey sufficient expressive information (content of diagnostic features) as in photographed faces for emotion recognition. There was a clear emotion recognition advantage for happy expressions as compared to other emotions. In contrast, recognizing sad and angry faces was more difficult. Concomitantly, results of eye-tracking showed that participants employed more part-based processing on sketch and photographed faces during second fixation. The extracting information from the eyes is needed when the expression conveys more complex emotional information and when stimuli are impoverished (e.g., sketch). Using electroencephalographic (EEG), the P100 and N170 components are used to study the effect of stimulus type (sketch, photographed), orientation (inverted, upright), and deconfiguration, and possible interactions. Results also suggest that sketch faces evoked more part-based processing. The cues conveyed by diagnostic features might have been subjected to early processing, likely driven by low-level information during P100 time window, followed by a later decoding of facial structure and its emotional content in the N170 time window. In sum, this thesis helped elucidate elements of the debate about configural and part-based face processing for emotion recognition, and extend our current understanding of the role of diagnostic features and configural information during neurocognitive processing of facial expressions of emotion.; La reconnaissance experte de l'expression faciale est cruciale pour l'interaction et la communication sociale. Le comportement, les potentiels évoqués (ERP), et les techniques d’oculométrie peuvent être utilisés pour étudier les mécanismes cérébraux qui participent au traitement visuel automatique. La reconnaissance d'expressions faciales implique non seulement l'extraction d'informations à partir de caractéristiques faciales diagnostiques, stratégie qualifiée de traitement local, mais aussi l'intégration d'informations globales impliquant des traitements configuraux. Des nombreuses recherches concernant le traitement des informations faciales émotionnelles il apparaît que l’interaction des traitements locaux et configuraux pour la reconnaissance des émotions est mal comprise. La complexité inhérente à l'intégration de l'information faciale est mise en lumière lorsque l'on compare la performance de sujets sains et d’individus atteints de schizophrénie, car ces derniers ont tendance à s’attarder sur quelques éléments locaux, parfois peu informatifs. Les différentes façons d'examiner les visages peuvent avoir un impact sur la capacité socio-cognitive de reconnaître les émotions. Pour ces raisons, cette thèse étudie le rôle des caractéristiques diagnostiques et configurales dans la reconnaissance de l'expression faciale. En plus des aspects comportementaux, nous avons donc examiné la dynamique spatiale et temporelle des fixations à l’aide de mesures oculométriques, ainsi que l’activité électrophysiologique précoce considérant plus particulièrement les composantes P100 et N170. Nous avons créé de nouveaux stimuli des esquisses par une transformation numérique de portraits photos en esquisses, pour des visages exprimant colère, tristesse, peur, joie ou neutralité, issus de la base Radboud Faces Database, en supprimant les informations de texture du visage et ne conservant que les caractéristiques diagnostiques (yeux et sourcils, nez, bouche). Ces esquisses altèrent le traitement configural en comparaison avec les visages photographiques, ce qui augmente le traitement des caractéristiques diagnostiques par traitement élémentaire, en contrepartie. La comparaison directe des mesures neurocognitives entre les esquisses et les visages photographiques exprimant des émotions de base n'a jamais été testée, à notre connaissance. Dans cette thèse, nous avons examiné (i) les fixations oculaires en fonction du type de stimulus, (ii) la réponse électrique aux manipulations expérimentales telles que l'inversion et la déconfiguration du visage. Concernant, les résultats comportementaux montrent que les esquisses de visage transmettent suffisamment d'information expressive (compte tenu de la présence des caractéristiques diagnostiques) pour la reconnaissance des émotions en comparaison des visages photographiques. Notons que, comme attendu, il y avait un net avantage de la reconnaissance des émotions pour les expressions heureuses par rapport aux autres émotions. En revanche, reconnaître des visages tristes et en colère était plus difficile. Ayant analysé séparément les fixations successives, les résultats indiquent que les participants ont adopté un traitement plus local des visages croqués et photographiés lors de la deuxième fixation. Néanmoins, l'extraction de l'information des yeux est nécessaire lorsque l'expression transmet des informations émotionnelles plus complexes et lorsque les stimuli sont simplifiés comme dans les esquisses. Proficient recognition of facial expression is crucial for social interaction. Behaviour, event-related potentials (ERPs), and eye-tracking techniques can be used to investigate the underlying brain mechanisms supporting this seemingly effortless processing of facial expression. Facial expression recognition involves not only the extraction of expressive information from diagnostic facial features, known as part-based processing, but also the integration of featural information, known as configural processing. Despite the critical role of diagnostic features in emotion recognition and extensive research in this area, it is still not known how the brain decodes configural information in terms of emotion recognition. The complexity of facial information integration becomes evident when comparing performance between healthy subjects and individuals with schizophrenia because those patients tend to process featural information on emotional faces. The different ways in examining faces possibly impact on social-cognitive ability in recognizing emotions. Therefore, this thesis investigates the role of diagnostic features and face configuration in the recognition of facial expression. In addition to behavior, we examined both the spatiotemporal dynamics of fixations using eye-tracking, and early neurocognitive sensitivity to face as indexed by the P100 and N170 ERP components. In order to address the questions, we built a new set of sketch face stimuli by transforming photographed faces from the Radboud Faces Database through the removal of facial texture and retaining only the diagnostic features (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth) with neutral and four facial expressions - anger, sadness, fear, happiness. Sketch faces supposedly impair configural processing in comparison with photographed faces, resulting in increased sensitivity to diagnostic features through part-based processing. The direct comparison of neurocognitive measures between sketch and photographed faces expressing basic emotions has never been tested. In this thesis, we examined (i) eye fixations as a function of stimulus type, and (ii) neuroelectric response to experimental manipulations such face inversion and deconfiguration. The use of these methods aimed to reveal which face processing drives emotion recognition and to establish neurocognitive markers of emotional sketch and photographed faces processing. Overall, the behavioral results showed that sketch faces convey sufficient expressive information (content of diagnostic features) as in photographed faces for emotion recognition. There was a clear emotion recognition advantage for happy expressions as compared to other emotions. In contrast, recognizing sad and angry faces was more difficult. Concomitantly, results of eye-tracking showed that participants employed more part-based processing on sketch and photographed faces during second fixation. The extracting information from the eyes is needed when the expression conveys more complex emotional information and when stimuli are impoverished (e.g., sketch). Using electroencephalographic (EEG), the P100 and N170 components are used to study the effect of stimulus type (sketch, photographed), orientation (inverted, upright), and deconfiguration, and possible interactions. Results also suggest that sketch faces evoked more part-based processing. The cues conveyed by diagnostic features might have been subjected to early processing, likely driven by low-level information during P100 time window, followed by a later decoding of facial structure and its emotional content in the N170 time window. In sum, this thesis helped elucidate elements of the debate about configural and part-based face processing for emotion recognition, and extend our current understanding of the role of diagnostic features and configural information during neurocognitive processing of facial expressions of emotion.; La reconnaissance experte de l'expression faciale est cruciale pour l'interaction et la communication sociale. Le comportement, les potentiels évoqués (ERP), et les techniques d’oculométrie peuvent être utilisés pour étudier les mécanismes cérébraux qui participent au traitement visuel automatique. La reconnaissance d'expressions faciales implique non seulement l'extraction d'informations à partir de caractéristiques faciales diagnostiques, stratégie qualifiée de traitement local, mais aussi l'intégration d'informations globales impliquant des traitements configuraux. Des nombreuses recherches concernant le traitement des informations faciales émotionnelles il apparaît que l’interaction des traitements locaux et configuraux pour la reconnaissance des émotions est mal comprise. La complexité inhérente à l'intégration de l'information faciale est mise en lumière lorsque l'on compare la performance de sujets sains et d’individus atteints de schizophrénie, car ces derniers ont tendance à s’attarder sur quelques éléments locaux, parfois peu informatifs. Les différentes façons d'examiner les visages peuvent avoir un impact sur la capacité socio-cognitive de reconnaître les émotions. Pour ces raisons, cette thèse étudie le rôle des caractéristiques diagnostiques et configurales dans la reconnaissance de l'expression faciale. En plus des aspects comportementaux, nous avons donc examiné la dynamique spatiale et temporelle des fixations à l’aide de mesures oculométriques, ainsi que l’activité électrophysiologique précoce considérant plus particulièrement les composantes P100 et N170. Nous avons créé de nouveaux stimuli des esquisses par une transformation numérique de portraits photos en esquisses, pour des visages exprimant colère, tristesse, peur, joie ou neutralité, issus de la base Radboud Faces Database, en supprimant les informations de texture du visage et ne conservant que les caractéristiques diagnostiques (yeux et sourcils, nez, bouche). Ces esquisses altèrent le traitement configural en comparaison avec les visages photographiques, ce qui augmente le traitement des caractéristiques diagnostiques par traitement élémentaire, en contrepartie. La comparaison directe des mesures neurocognitives entre les esquisses et les visages photographiques exprimant des émotions de base n'a jamais été testée, à notre connaissance. Dans cette thèse, nous avons examiné (i) les fixations oculaires en fonction du type de stimulus, (ii) la réponse électrique aux manipulations expérimentales telles que l'inversion et la déconfiguration du visage. Concernant, les résultats comportementaux montrent que les esquisses de visage transmettent suffisamment d'information expressive (compte tenu de la présence des caractéristiques diagnostiques) pour la reconnaissance des émotions en comparaison des visages photographiques. Notons que, comme attendu, il y avait un net avantage de la reconnaissance des émotions pour les expressions heureuses par rapport aux autres émotions. En revanche, reconnaître des visages tristes et en colère était plus difficile. Ayant analysé séparément les fixations successives, les résultats indiquent que les participants ont adopté un traitement plus local des visages croqués et photographiés lors de la deuxième fixation. Néanmoins, l'extraction de l'information des yeux est nécessaire lorsque l'expression transmet des informations émotionnelles plus complexes et lorsque les stimuli sont simplifiés comme dans les esquisses.
