Rationale: Erigeron breviscapus (EB) and Erigeron multiradiatus (EM) are the two species of the genus Erigeron (Asteraceae) with extremely close genetic relationships. They were used as the same "meiduoluomi" for the treatment of plague and epidemics in traditional Tibetan medicine. But in traditional Chinese medicine, only EB is used for treatment of cerebrovascular obstruction, hemiplegia due to stroke, coronary artery obstruction, chest congestion, and angina pectoris. These two Erigeron species show different effects in different traditional medicine systems. Therefore, analyzing the chemical compositions of two species will not only enhance comprehension of their medicinal properties but also foster the advancement and exploration of novel applications. However, to date, there has been no comprehensive and detailed investigation comparing the constituents of EB and EM. Methods: A methodology for rapid identification of chemical profiles from two Erigeron species was devised through the integration of ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time‐of‐flight tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC‐QTOF‐MS/MS) and multivariate statistical analysis. Additionally, a UHPLC‐photo‐diode array (PDA) method was established to precisely quantify of 11 components. Results: A total of 58 constituents comprising flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponin, and long chain fatty acids were elucidated. Thirteen compounds were identified as potential differentiators in chemical profiles among the two Erigeron species. For quantitative assessment, 11 bioactive compounds were simultaneously quantified across 49 batches of Erigeron species samples utilizing UHPLC‐PDA with wavelengths of 325, 254, and 266 nm. The method demonstrated excellent precision, linearity, accuracy, repeatability, stability, and recovery. Conclusions: The findings from this study will serve as a reference for quality control, functional activity exploration, and improved clinical application based on the ingredient profiles of the two species. Recent field surveys of the flora of Niue have identified three new species records for the island. Erigeron bellioides DC. (Asteraceae) and Psidium cattleyanum Sabine (Myrtaceae) are new naturalised records and Crepidomanes saxifragoides (C.Presl) P.S.Green (Hymenophyllaceae) is an addition to the indigenous flora. Crepidomanes is a new genus for the indigenous flora of Niue. Information is provided for each of these species on their biostatus, collections, distribution and habitats. Erigeron bellioides is known from several locations that provide access to sea and chasm walks where it mostly occupies disturbed and grassy habitats used for car parks. It is most probably being spread by seeds adhering to tourists’ footwear and vehicle tyres as they move between popular attractions. In contrast, Psidium cattleyanum is known from a single plant on the margin of regenerating secondary forest along the Puluhiki Sea Track (Lakepa). It is unlikely to have been planted at this site and may be cultivated in the nearby Lakepa village, which could be the seed source for the established wild plant. Psidium cattleyanum is an invasive species on other Pacific Islands and we recommend removal of the single known plant and survey for it elsewhere, including gardens of the villages. Crepidomanes saxifragoides is known from a single collection in primary forest of the Huvalu Forest Conservation Area where it grew on the shaded and moist surface of a root buttress at the base of a trunk of Syzygium. While its continental sister species is unknown, Erigeron on the Juan Fernández Islands appears to be monophyletic and most likely evolved from South American progenitor species. We characterized the complete chloroplast genomes of five Erigeron species, including accessions of E. fernandezia and one each from Alejandro Selkirk and Robinson Crusoe Islands, with the purposes of elucidating molecular evolution and phylogenetic relationships. We found highly conserved chloroplast genomes in size, gene order and contents, and further identified several mutation hotspot regions. In addition, we found two positively selected chloroplast genes (ccsA and ndhF) among species in the islands. The complete plastome sequences confirmed the monophyly of Erigeron in the islands and corroborated previous phylogenetic relationships among species. New findings in the current study include (1) two major lineages, E. turricola–E. luteoviridis and E. fernandezia–E. ingae–E. rupicola, (2) the non-monophyly of E. fernandezia occurring on the two islands, and (3) the non-monophyly of the alpine species E. ingae complex. Premise: Parthenogenesis is the capacity of organisms to develop embryos from unfertilized eggs. When parthenogenesis is coupled with unreduced gamete formation (apomeiosis), genetically maternal progeny result. Genetic elucidation of this form of reproduction in plants, apomixis, has important agronomic implications. However, genetic characterization of apomeiosis and parthenogenesis has been problematic in part because the traits usually co‐occur and are restricted to polyploids. In this work, the inheritance of parthenogenetic embryo development, by itself, was studied at the diploid level. Methods: Progeny resulting from a cross between a diploid (2n = 18), heterozygous, parthenogenetic pollen donor, and a diploid, wildtype, sexual seed parent were evaluated. Paternity was tested with conserved orthologous sequence (COS) markers, reproductive development of F1s was evaluated with microscopy of cleared ovules, and an amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) marker (Eagc × Macg.615) co‐segregating with parthenogenesis was characterized at the sequence level. Results: Of 102 diploid biparental progeny, 47 exhibited parthenogenetic embryo and endosperm development, and 55 lacked development of the egg and central cell. This result is consistent with Mendelian inheritance for a single locus (P = 0.43). Isolation and sequencing of the AFLP marker indicates that it is likely a portion of a Ty‐Gypsy retrotransposon. Attempts to develop a sequence‐characterized amplified region marker from the AFLP were unsuccessful. Conclusions: This work shows that parthenogenesis can be transmitted simply at the diploid level. This advance is key in the development of a tractable system in Erigeron aimed at the identification of the parthenogenesis locus using genetic mapping strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background National checklists of alien plants and detailed databases of non-native plant occurrences are required to study and control regional and global plant invasions. No country in Central Asia has a national checklist of alien plants. A recent inventory counted 183 alien plant species in Kyrgyzstan, including archaeophytes and neophytes, established and casual. This preliminary checklist, which was developed for the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species in 2018, served as a starting point for the present study. New information A complete inventory of Xanthium in Kyrgyzstan has revealed that three alien species are resident in the country. Their correct nomenclature is X. orientale (syn. X. albinum, X. californicum, X. sibiricum auct.; invasive neophyle of the period of extensive grain import to the USSR after the Second World War), X. spinosum (invasive neophyte of the period of the Second World War, which arrived as a contaminant on the relocated livestock) and X. strumarium (syn. X. chinense, X. sibiricum; archaeophyte of the Neolithic period, introduced with wheat cultivation, which had lost its invasive status and appeared on the verge of extinction when its pool was no longer renewed by contaminated grain). A history of introduction to Central Asia is uncovered for all the species of Xanthium. A further spread is documented for Bunias orientalis, with a new record extending its distribution to the Eastern Tian-Shan; a complex history of its introduction to Europe and Central Asia is inferred from the archaeological data and its recent dispersal, and the pathways of its introduction to Kyrgyzstan are established. Erigeron annuus s.str. is reported as new to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, and E. lilacinus as new to Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Nepal and Tajikistan (it was previously recorded as E. annuus s.l. from the three latter countries, in which the presence of E. annuus s.str. is not confirmed). These closely related species differ in their pathways of introduction and invasion status: E. annuus s.str. is an invasive established alien which was imported as a contaminant of forage, whereas E. lilacinus is mostly a casual (locally persisting) alien introduced with contaminated seed of ornamental plants or nursery material, and also intentionally introduced and locally established in the Botanical Garden in Bishkek. Bidens tinctoria (syn. Coreopsis tinctoria) is newly recorded as a casual alien from a single locality in Kyrgyzstan; this species name is validly published here in conformity with the phylogeny of Coreopsideae. Point maps of species distributions in Kyrgyzstan are provided on the basis of a complete inventory of the literature data, herbarium specimens and documented observations, and our recent fieldwork. The maps are documented with a dataset of herbarium specimens and observations. Period and pathways of introduction, vectors of dispersal, current and historical invasion status, evidence of impact and distributional trend are established or inferred for each species. Each species is discussed in the context of plant invasions in Central Asia as a whole. These species accounts are part of the national database of alien plants which aims at producing a comprehensive overview and analysis of plant invasions in Kyrgyzstan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the protective effect of Erigeron breviscapus injection, a classic traditional Chinese medicine most typically used by Chinese minority to treat stroke, on cerebral ischemia–reperfusion injury and the related signaling pathways. Use network pharmacology methods to study the relationship between E. breviscapus (Vant.) Hand-Mazz. and ischemic stroke, predict the mechanism and active ingredients of E. breviscapus (Vant.) Hand-Mazz. in improving ischemic stroke disease. We study the protective effect of E. breviscapus injection on blood–brain barrier (BBB) injuries induced by cerebral ischemia in rats by regulating the ROS/RNS-MMPs-TJs signaling pathway. The rat model of focal cerebral ischemia–reperfusion injury has been prepared using the wire-suppository method. Firstly, the efficacy of E. breviscapus injection, Scutellarin and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid in protecting BBB injury caused by cerebral ischemia has been evaluated. Secondly, the following two methods have been used to study the mechanism of E. breviscapus injection in regulating the ROS/RNS-MMPS-TJS signaling pathway: real-time PCR and western blot for the determination of iNOS, MMP-9, claudin-5, occludin, ZO-1 mRNA and protein expression in brain tissue. We find that PI3K-Akt signaling pathway predicted by network pharmaology affects the blood–brain barrier function, so we chose the blood–brain barrier-related MMP-9, claudin-5, iNOS, occludin and ZO-1 proteins are used for research. The results of our research show that 3 drugs can reduce the rate of cerebral infarction in rats, relieve the abnormal neuroethology of rats, reduce the degree of brain tissue lesion, increase the number of the Nissl corpuscle cells and repair the neuron ultrastructure in injured rats. At the same time, it can obviously reduce the ultrastructure damage of the BBB in rats. All three drugs significantly reduced the content of Evans blue in the ischemic brain tissue caused by cerebral ischemia in rats with BBB injury. In addition, E. breviscapus injection, Scutellarin and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid can decrease the protein expression of iNOS and MMP-9 in rat ischemic brain tissue. In addition, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid can increase the protein expression of claudin-5. We conclude that E. breviscapus injection, Scutellarin and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid have obvious therapeutic effects on BBB and neuron injury induced by cerebral ischemia in rats. Our results from studying the mechanism of action show that E. breviscapus injection and Scutellarin inhibited the activation of MMP-9 by inhibiting the synthesis of iNOS, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid inhibits the expression and activation of MMP-9 by inhibiting the activation of iNOS and reducing the generation of free radicals, thus reducing the degradation of important cytoskeleton connexin claudin-5 in the tight junction (TJ) structure by inhibiting the expression and activation of MMP-9. Amino acids in the extract of Erigeron annuus herb were determined using an automatic precolumn derivatization with fluorenylmethyl-chloroformate and reversed-phase liquid chromatography with fluorescence and UV Vis detection. This objective is reached with automatic derivatization using o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) for primary amino acids and 9-Fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMOC) for secondary amino acids. Then derivatization integrates into high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The applied procedure is fast with easily reproduced results. The insufficient knowledge about amino acids composition of herb of Erigeron annuus is the basis for study. This work reports on content of 16 free and bound amino acids (391.408 μg/mg) in the plant raw material and influence's evaluation of different extraction types on the amino acid profile. The total content of free amino acids was 4.66 μg/mg; proline prevailed (2.498 μg/mg). The total content of bound amino acids was 386.748 μg/mg; proline (146.824 μg/mg), arginine (67.861 μg/mg), phenylalanine (25.806 μg/mg), asparagine (24.263 μg/mg), histidine (20.395 μg/mg), alanine (18.204 μg/mg), serine (16.650 μg/mg), valine (15.977 μg/mg) were the dominant amino acids. Se examina el género Conyza para entender mejor la diversidad infragenérica en el NE de España, principalmente en Cataluña. Cada taxon se trata con una breve descripción y comentarios, además se ha elaborado una clave dicótoma que incluye tanto las especies presentes actualmente como las presuntamente desaparecidas. Se reconocen dos táxones infraespecíficos poco conocidos: C. Canadensis var. glabrata y C. Bonariensis var. angustifolia, además de analizar la identidad y el estatus de otros táxones a veces citados.

Asteraceae is one of the most diverse plant families in Central Asia, and in Uzbekistan in particular. In Uzbekistan, there are 598 species of Asteraceae which comprise 15 % of the flora of the country. Seventy species of the family have been recorded from the Bukhara oasis in the south-western part of Uzbekistan, which makes it the greatest family by the number of species. Two alien species of Asteraceae were found as new to Uzbekistan. Erigeron bonariensis L., which has been presumably recently introduced, was observed with a limited number of populations, whereas Symphyotrichum graminifolium (Spreng.) G. L. Nesom is considered expanding invasive species. The present condition and distribution patterns of these species in the Bukhara oasis of Uzbekistan are described.

Background: Resistance to glyphosate has been reported in flaxleaf fleabane populations within a number of grain growing areas in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales and other cropping regions across Australia. Results: To investigate the processes contributing to the evolution and spread of glyphosate-resistant flaxleaf fleabane, the resistant populations tested in dose-response experiments varied in their responses to glyphosate from two to eight times the recommended rate. The different dose responses obtained may indicate different mechanisms of resistance. This can possibly be attributed to an independent evolution of resistance. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that glyphosate resistance is widespread across Australia and has likely evolved multiple times as well as dispersing by seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Erigeron breviscapus (Vant.) Hand.-Mazz. (EB) granules is the extract preparation of EB, with clear curative effect and unclear mechanism. This study intends to systematically explore the specific mechanism of EB granules in the treatment of IS from the metabolic perspective., Methods: The model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) in mice was established by the suture-occluded method. The therapeutic effect of EB granules on tMCAO mice was evaluated by behavioral evaluation, brain water content determination, 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and neuron specific enolase (NSE) in serum. In order to screen differential metabolites, non-targeted metabolomics technology was used to detect the metabolites in serum before and after administration. Univariate statistics, multivariate statistics and bioinformatics were used to analyze the changes of metabolites in serum of tMCAO mice. The possible related mechanism of EB granules in treating IS was screened by pathway enrichment analysis, and the preliminary verification was carried out at animal level by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot (WB)., Results: EB granules could significantly improve behavior of tMCAO mice, reduce brain water content and cerebral infarction volume, improve morphology of brain tissue, reduce the levels of LDH and NSE in serum. A total of 232 differential metabolites were screened, which were mainly enriched in many biological processes such as sphingolipid metabolism. The differential metabolite S1P and its receptors S1PR1 and S1PR2 in sphingolipid metabolism were verified. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative bone disease characterized by inflammation as a primary pathology and currently lacks therapeutic interventions to impede its progression. Erigeron breviscapus (Vant.) Hand.-Mazz. (EB) is an east Asian herbal medicine with a long history of use and a wide range of confirmed efficacy against cardiovascular and central nervous system diseases. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether EB is worthy of further investigation as a treatment for OA based on anti-inflammatory activity. This study aims to assess the potential of EB as a treatment for OA, focusing on its anti-inflammatory properties. Analgesic effects, functional improvements, and inhibition of cartilage destruction induced by EB were evaluated in acetic acid-induced peripheral pain mice and monosodium iodoacetate-induced OA rat models. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory effect of EB was assessed in serum and cartilage tissue in vivo, as well as in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 cells. EB demonstrated a significant alleviation of pain, functional impairment, and cartilage degradation in OA along with a notable inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, matrix metalloproteinases 13, and nitric oxide synthase 2, both in vitro and in vivo, in a dose-dependent manner compared to the active control. Accordingly, EB merits further exploration as a potential disease-modifying drug for OA, capable of mitigating the multifaceted pathology of osteoarthritis through its anti-inflammatory properties. Nonetheless, additional validation through a broader experimental design is essential to substantiate the findings of this study.

Erigeron bonariensis is widely distributed throughout the world's tropics and subtropics. In folk medicine, E. bonariensis has historically been used to treat head and brain diseases. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most widespread form of dementia initiated via disturbances in brain function. Herein, the neuroprotective effect of the chemically characterized E. bonariensis ethanolic extract is reported for the first time in an AD animal model. Chemical profiling was conducted using UPLC-ESI-MS analysis. Female rats underwent ovariectomy (OVX) followed by 42 days of D-galactose (D-Gal) administration (150 mg/kg/day, i.p) to induce AD. The OVX/D-Gal-subjected rats received either donepezil (5 mg/kg/day) or E. bonariensis at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg/day, given 1 h prior to D-Gal. UPLC-ESI-MS analysis identified 42 chemicals, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenes, and nitrogenous constituents. Several metabolites, such as isoschaftoside, casticin, velutin, pantothenic acid, xanthurenic acid, C18-sphingosine, linoleamide, and erucamide, were reported herein for the first time in Erigeron genus. Treatment with E. bonariensis extract mitigated the cognitive decline in the Morris Water Maze test and the histopathological alterations in cortical and hippocampal tissues of OVX/D-Gal-subjected rats. Moreover, E. bonariensis extract mitigated OVX/D-Gal-induced Aβ aggregation, Tau hyperphosphorylation, AChE activity, neuroinflammation (NF-κBp65, TNF-α, IL-1β), and apoptosis (Cytc, BAX). Additionally, E. bonariensis extract ameliorated AD by increasing α7-nAChRs expression, down-regulating GSK-3β and FOXO3a expression, and modulating Jak2/STAT3/NF-ĸB p65 and PI3K/AKT signaling cascades. These findings demonstrate the neuroprotective and memory-enhancing effects of E. bonariensis extract in the OVX/D-Gal rat model, highlighting its potential as a promising candidate for AD management., (© 2024. Malignant invasive Erigeron canadensis, as a typical lignocellulosic biomass, is a formidable challenge for sustainable and efficient resource utilization, however nanobubble water (NBW) coupled with anaerobic digestion furnishes a prospective strategy with superior environmental and economic effectiveness. In this study, influence mechanism of various O 2 -NBW addition times on methanogenic performance of E. canadensis during anaerobic digestion were performed to achieve the optimal pollution-free energy conversion. Results showed that supplementation of O 2 -NBW in digestion system could significantly enhance the methane production by 10.70-16.17%, while the maximum cumulative methane production reached 343.18 mL g -1 VS in the case of one-time O 2 -NBW addition on day 0. Furthermore, addition of O 2 -NBW was conducive to an increase of 2-90% in the activities of dehydrogenase, α-glucosidase and coenzyme F 420 . Simultaneously, both facultative bacteria and methanogenic archaea were enriched as well, further indicating that O 2 -NBW might be responsible for facilitating hydrolytic acidification and methanogenesis. Based on Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) cluster analysis, provision of O 2 -NBW enhanced the metabolism of carbohydrate and amino acid, translation as well as membrane transport of bacteria and archaea. Background: Continual application of herbicides for flaxleaf fleabane control readily results in the evolution of herbicide resistance. Flaxleaf fleabane has evolved resistance to different modes of action herbicides in many countries. Due to the comprehensive geographical distribution of flaxleaf fleabane in Australia, it was classified as a cosmopolitan weed and it therefore has no specific climatic requirement. Results: The high percentage of polymorphisms in the samples of the susceptible population (79.8%, 75%) suggests that susceptible populations of flaxleaf fleabane, even within one site, originated from a number of parents. However, the percentage of polymorphism in the resistant populations (51.5%, 66.8%) suggests that resistant populations of flaxleaf fleabane within one site could have originated from fewer parents. In addition, any site containing resistant and susceptible populations of flaxleaf fleabane may have been populated by a large number of parents, evidenced by the relatively high percentage of polymorphisms detected by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis (86.5%). Despite the large geographic distances between collection locations, populations from across states clustered in several groups showing a close genetic relationship among these populations over these large distances. These high levels of genetic diversity within and between populations confirmed in the sequencing of enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate above support the results of AFLP studies and gave the author more confidence to report the genetic diversity seen within and between population studies. Conclusion: To prevent further resistance spread, flaxleaf fleabane management in infested areas should focus on decreasing seed movement from resistant sites as well as reducing the selection pressure for resistance to glyphosate by adopting alternative management strategies. Background: Pollen is an important source of protein and lipids for many animals including honey bees. In order to understand the foraging behaviour of honey bee colonies and preference among the available floral resources, pollen collections from three experimental healthy colonies of honey bees were analysed in the month of June. Results: The amount of pollen collections were related to the colony's need which was indicated by the number of larval and adult bees present in the hive. Interesting was the sequence of pollen collection from different floral sources. All honey bee colonies collected pollens from Trifolium repens first, then Erigeron annus and the third choice was Coreopsis drummondii and Oenothera biennis flowers. Total protein content of Trifolium pollen was the highest (20.0 g/100 g DM), and the others were in the range of 8.9–11.4 g/100 g DM. Conclusion: The results indicated that the first criteria for honey bee foraging preference of pollens would be the nutritional contents of protein and the resource availability of the lesser nutritious floral sources. This information can help pollinator protection programmes of habitat manipulation using flowering plants for nectar and pollen sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During a systematic survey of the flora in the administrative districts of Pécs and other Transdanubian settlements, several stands of Erigeron bonariensis L. and E. sumatrensis Retz., new species to the Hungarian flora were encountered. In this paper, we discuss the morphological and phytocoenological features of the species as well as the possible ways of their introduction. We provide an identification key for Erigeron species currently known in Hungary. With the changing climate and increasing human impact on the landscape, we predict the future spread and naturalization of these species in Hungary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plant communities across multiple climate zones are at risk of invasive species. Understanding the effects of invasive alien species on both the taxonomic and functional diversities of plant communities in different climate zones enables insight into the mechanisms underlying successful invasions. This study investigated the effects of Erigeron canadensis at different degrees of invasion on both the plant taxonomic and functional diversities in the Chinese zones of Jinan (warm temperate climate) and Zhenjiang (north subtropical climate). A high degree of E. canadensis invasion resulted in a stronger decrease of plant diversity compared to a light degree of E. canadensis invasion. This may be because E. canadensis invasion can lead to a decrease in the number of native species via competition and subsequent local extinction. A high degree of E. canadensis invasion increased the Rao's quadratic entropy of plant height and ground cover. This may be because both the plant height and ground cover of E. canadensis and natives increased with increasing degree of E. canadensis invasion. The number of plant species in plant communities was lower in Jinan than in Zhenjiang. This is presumably because E. canadensis grows better in Jinan than in Zhenjiang and therefore, rare species are more likely to go extinct there. A small number of functional diversity indices of Jinan plant communities were higher than those of Zhenjiang. This may be due to the higher value of functional traits of E. canadensis in Jinan. Glyphosate has been widely used to control annual, perennial, and biennial weeds including Conyza species. Conyza sumatrensis (Sumatran fleabane) is considered a highly invasive and troublesome weed worldwide, including in European and Mediterranean regions. In Turkey, the use of glyphosate in orchards has recently increased; however, extensive use of glyphosate has resulted in poor control of C. sumatrensis in several peach orchards. The objectives of this research were to determine if C. sumatrensis is resistant to glyphosate and identify alternative herbicides with different modes of action that can be used instead of glyphosate. Two dose response studies were conducted in the greenhouse to evaluate the response of four C. sumatrensis populations to glyphosate, chlorsulfuron, and metribuzin. Glyphosate isopropyl amine and glyphosate potassium was applied at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 times the use rate of 1080 g a.e./ha (a.e. indicates acid equivalent) when the plants were at rosette (5-6 true leaves) and vegetative (20-22 cm tall) stages. Effects of both glyphosate formulations were combined. The resistant populations showed higher resistance 3.8 to 6.6 and 5.3 to 7.8 times at rosette stage and vegetative stage, respectively, compared with the susceptible population. Furthermore, glyphosate-resistant populations were treated with chlorsulfuron and metribuzin at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 times use rate of 7.5 and 350 g a.i./ha, respectively at the rosette stage. The glyphosate-resistant populations exhibited 2.4 to 3.8 times more resistance to chlorsulfuron, but were adequately controlled with metribuzin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mosquito-borne infectious diseases are a persistent problem in tropical regions of the world, including Southeast Asia. Vector control has relied principally on synthetic insecticides, but these have detrimental environmental effects and there is an increasing demand for plant-based agents to control insect pests. Invasive weedy plant species may be able to serve as readily available sources of essential oils, some of which may be useful as larvicidal agents for control of mosquito populations. We hypothesize that members of the genus Conyza (Asteraceae) may produce essential oils that may have mosquito larvicidal properties. The essential oils from the aerial parts of Conyza bonariensis, C. canadensis, and C. sumatrensis were obtained by hydrodistillation, analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and screened for mosquito larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus. The essential oils of C. canadensis and C. sumatrensis, both rich in limonene (41.5% and 25.5%, respectively), showed notable larvicidal activities against Ae. aegypti (24-h LC50 = 9.80 and 21.7 μg/mL, respectively) and Ae. albopictus (24-h LC50 = 18.0 and 19.1 μg/mL, respectively). These two Conyza species may, therefore, serve as sources for alternative, environmentally-benign larvicidal control agents.

Erigeron annuus (EA), traditionally used to treat disorders such as diabetes and enteritis, contains a variety of chemicals, including caffeic acid, flavonoids, and coumarins, providing antifungal and antioxidative benefits. However, the ingredients of each part of the EA vary widely, and there are few reports on the functionality of water extracts in skin inflammation and barrier protection. We assessed the therapeutic properties of the extract of EA without roots (EEA) and its primary ingredient, pyromeconic acid (PA), focusing on their antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative capabilities using HMC-1(human mast cells) and human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). Our findings revealed that histamine secretion, which is closely related to itching, was notably reduced in HMC-1 cells following pretreatment with EEA (0.1% and 0.2%) and PA (corresponding concentration, 4.7 of 9.4 µg/mL). Similarly, they led to a marked decrease in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-8, IL-6, and IFN-γ. Furthermore, EA and PA enhanced antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) production, and showed reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity in HaCaT cells. Moreover, at the molecular level, elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, TARC, and MDC induced by TNF-α/IFN-γ in HaCaT cells were mitigated by treatment with EEA and PA. We also revealed the protective effects of EEA and PA against SDS-induced skin barrier dysfunction in HaCaT cells by enhancing the expression of barrier-related proteins. Using NanoString technology, a comprehensive analysis of gene expression changes indicated significant modulation of autoimmune and inflammatory genes by EEA and PA. Scutellarin (SC), mainly extracted from the Chinese herb Erigeron breviscapus (vant.), has been reported to possess various pharmacological activities; however, its effects on Alzheimer's disease (AD) have not been systemically reported. The protective effects of SC on AD were investigated using an L-glutamic acid (L-Glu)-damaged HT22 cell apoptosis model and an aluminum chloride plus D-galactose-induced AD mouse model. In L-Glu-damaged HT22 cells, SC significantly increased cell viability, inhibited lactate dehydrogenase release, reduced caspase-3 activity and suppressed apoptosis, which were determined via an MTT assay, an in vitro Toxicology Assay kit, a Caspase-3 activity assay kit, and propidium iodide and Annexin V staining. Furthermore, SC suppressed the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), restored the dissipation of mitochondrial membrane potential, enhanced the expression of antiapoptotic proteins and reduced the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins, as determined by immunofluorescence assays and western blotting. In AD mice, SC enhanced vertical and horizontal movements in an autonomic activity test, and reduced the escape latency time in the water maze test. SC reduced the deposition of amyloid β1–42 (Aβ1-42) and the expression of phosphorylated-Tau in the hippocampus as determined by immunohistochemistry analysis, but enhanced the serum levels of Aβ1–42 of AD mice as determined by ELISA. ELISA analyses also revealed that SC enhanced the levels of acetylcholine, and superoxide dismutase in serum and brain lysate, whereas reduced the levels of ROS in brain lysate of AD mice. Erigeron annuus (L.) Pers. (EAP), belonging to the Compositae (Asteraceas) family, has been used in traditional herbal medicine and has many pharmacological activities. Recently, EAP essential oil has been reported to have diverse biological activities. However, its physiological activity on skin remains to be investigated. In the present study, we extracted the essential oil from the EAP flower (EAPF), and determined the role of the EAPF essential oil on skin regeneration-associated responses, especially proliferation and migration, using human epidermal-keratinocytes (HaCats). The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation in 0.08 % yield and contained twelve constituents, as assessed in GC-MS analysis. The EAPF essential oil stimulated proliferation and migration in HaCats, and increased the phosphorylation of serine/threonine-specific protein kinase (AKT) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2. In addition, the essential oil promoted sprout outgrowth in HaCats. From these findings, we concluded that EAPF essential oil may facilitate skin regeneration by promoting migration and proliferation, probably mediated by the AKT and ERK1/2 pathways. Flaxleaf fleabane (Conyza bonariensis [L.] Cronquist) is one of the most difficult weeds to control worldwide. There are more than 150 Conyza species in the world and eight species in Australia. Correct identification of these species can be problematic due to their morphological similarities especially at seedling stage. Developing a robust genetics – based species identification method to distinguish C. bonariensis from other closely related species is important for early control of weeds. We thus examined the chloroplast (cp) genome of C. bonariensis , aiming to identify novel DNA barcodes from the genome sequences, and use the entire cp genome as a super-barcode for molecular identification. The C. bonariensis chloroplast genome is 152,076 bp in size, encodes 133 genes including 88 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes and 8 ribosomal RNA genes. A total of 151 intergenic regions and 19 simple sequence repeats were identified in the cp genome of C. bonariensis , which provides a useful genetic resource to develop robust markers for the genetic diversity studies of Conyza species. The sequence information was used to design a robust DNA barcode rps 16 and trnQ-UUG which successfully separated three predominant Conyza species (C. bonariensis , C. canadensis , and C. sumatrensis). Phylogenetic analyses based on the cp genomes of C. bonariensis , C. canadensis and 18 other Asteraceae species revealed the potential of using entire cp genome as a plant super-barcode to distinguish closely-related weed species. Abstract. The La Sal daisy, Erigeron mancus, is endemic to treeline ecotone and alpine meadow habitats of the La Sal Mountains in Utah, an insular, laccolithic mountain range on the Colorado Plateau in southeastern Utah. From 2009 to 2011 we established elevational transects through upper spruce-fir forest, treeline ecotone, and alpine meadow habitats on Laurel Ridge in the Middle Mountain group of the La Sal Mountains to measure (1) periodic changes in E. mancus population density, (2) changes in the elevation of the E. mancus population centroid, (3) changes in patch size occupied by E. mancus, and (4) changes in frequency of occurrence in herbaceous plant species associated with E. mancus along these transects. We measured both E. mancus density and vascular plant species composition within 1-m × 1-m square frames in mid-July, near peak alpine plant flowering time. The E. mancus population density on Mt. Laurel ridge did not significantly change from 2009 to 2015, but the species was most abundant in alpine meadow habitat for both years. Changes in patch width, centroid elevation, and frequency of occurrence of 30 associated plant species were also not statistically significant. Like E. mancus, most species show changes in frequency of occurrence between upper spruce-fir forest, treeline ecotone, and alpine meadow habitats. Individual plants of E. mancus are probably long-lived perennials, so changes in population density and distribution due to global warming are expected to be gradual and/or have an unknown lag time. Although there is no evidence of ongoing change in the Laurel Ridge population of E. mancus, having this information will provide a solid statistical basis for determining significant future changes. Meiotic studies in 18 species belonging to 7 genera of the tribe Astereae from various localities of Western Himalaya have been analyzed. The chromosome number has been reported for the first time in Aster albescens (n = 9) and A. indamellus (n = 9). Further, intraspecific variability has been reported for the first time in A. thomsonii (n = 27), Bellis perennis (n = 5) and Myriactis nepalensis (n = 18). In India, the chromosome numbers are reported for first time in Aster himalaicus (n = 9), Brachyactis roylei (n = 9), Erigeron bellidioides (n = 9) and E. borealis (n = 9). B-chromosomes have been reported for the first time in Erigeron acer (n = 9 + 1 − 2B). Besides, most of the populations show laggards, chromosome stickiness and cytomixis from early prophase to telophase-II, leading to the formation of aneuploid cells or meiocytes with doubled chromosome number. Morphological intermediacy is considered the first evidence of hybridization in many plant studies. However, morphological intermediacy does not always provide hybrid origin and can be a result of divergence. In this study, the authors revised the morphological intermediacy of Erigeron ×huelsenii, a putative hybrid between the Eurasian E. acris s. str. and North American E. canadensis, using the character count procedure, a method that allows distinguishing hybridity from divergence. The measurements were made on herbarium specimens, including 100 specimens of E. acris s. str., 100 specimens of E. canadensis, and 50 specimens of E. ×huelsenii, which were collected in northeastern and southern Poland in 2013-2016. Among the 15 characters selected for the character count procedure, the hybrid showed intermediacy in 12 characters. The deviation was very significant (P < 0.05) and therefore the hypothesis of hybridity was fully accepted. Moreover, details of indumentum and receptacle characters of the hybrid and its parental species were visualized using scanning electron microscopy. The morphological characters of E. ×huelsenii presented in this study seem to be useful in the proper identification of all the hybrids between E. canadensis and E. acris s. l. Purpose: Diesel leakage is a global problem and high-level contamination cannot be removed by traditional phytoremediation because rhizospheric microorganisms are inhibited at high concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons. Hence, we look for an exogenous substance that can increase the tolerance of phytoremediation systems to high concentrations of diesel.Materials and methods: This study assessed the effects of selenium (0.5 mg Se kg−1 soil) on Erigeron annuus exposed to various levels of diesel (0, 15, 20, 25 g kg−1) during a 60-day pot-culture experiment. Response variables included biomass, photosynthesis parameters, antioxidant enzyme activity, and the degradation rate of diesel.Results and discussion: Concentration-dependent decreases were found in biomass, chlorophyll content, and all photosynthesis parameters exposure, except for intercellular CO2 and non-photochemical quenching, which increased. Diesel exposure induced oxidative stress, producing concentration-dependent increases in catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA), and a decline in superoxide dismutase (SOD). Addition of Se to soil reduced the toxic response of E. annuus to diesel, attributed to Se-enhanced antioxidant activity. In addition to increasing E. annuus tolerance to diesel, Se significantly increased the removal rate; 43.7 ± 13% in Se treated soil, compared to 37 ± 10% in the control.Conclusions: A low concentration of Se in soil enhances the removal of diesel from soil by Erigeron annuus. This enhancement is due to increased plant tolerance toward diesel, resulting in increased E. annuus biomass and photosynthesis. Se enhances the removal of soil diesel by E. annuus and can contribute to the ongoing effort to develop an effective phytoremediation system for soils highly contaminated by diesel. [Objective]In order to screen endophytic fungi which can produce flavonoids, the endophytic fungi in roots, stems, leaves and flowers of Erigeron breviscapus were isolated and identified. [Method] Endophytic fungi were isolated by using pure culture and selected pn>-iluced flavonoids substances based on morphology and specific color reaction. [Result]40 endophytic fungi were isolated from Erigeron bre-viscapus and identified to fourteen genera based on morphology and screened seven strains produced flavonoids substances by means of specific color reaction. Seven strains produced flavonoids substances were identified as Allernaria sp. , Fusarium sp. ,arid Sirosporium sp. The highest quality concentration of flavonoids substances from endophytic fungi roots was 2. 625 mg/L [Conclusion] It has shown tha species and distributing of the endophytie fungi varied in different parts of Erigeron breviscapus, and the concentration of flavo stances from endophytic fungi roots was the highest. The resistance to glyphosate may provide a penalty on plant growth and physiology. We investigate if the resistance to glyphosate reduces the seed quality of Conyza bonariensis by performing seed viability and vigor tests under a completely randomized design with four replicates of 50 seeds for both glyphosate-susceptible (S) and -resistant (R) biotypes. Low seed viability (<50%) was found in both S and R biotypes. No difference occurred between either S and R biotypes on seed germination and embryo viability. The percentage of seed germination of the S biotype was higher than the R biotype in the cold test (~58%), accelerated aging test (~84%), and high-temperature stress test (~45%). This is the first time one found evidences that resistance to glyphosate may be responsible for a penalty on seed quality of C. bonariensis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Achenial trichomes of 23 taxa of four genera of Asteraceae were studied by means of digital and SEM: eight intrageneric taxa of Solidago L., one of Euthamia (Nutt.) Cass., seven of Erigeron sect. Conyza Less., and seven of Bidens L. It is proved that achenes of all the examined taxa of Erigeron sect. Conyza, Euthamia, and Solidago are covered with duplex trichomes. Within Bidens this feature is variable: indigenous European species B. tripartita L. and B. cernua L. are characterized by simple monostichous multicellular trichomes; the invasive B. frondosa L., by duplex trichomes; the alien B. connata Muhl. ex Willd., by trichomes of both types. Additional characters of taxonomic value were described for several taxa: trichome length, pubescence, surface sculpture, etc. Identification keys based on trichome characters were created for species of Bidens and Solidago. Individual- and group-based interspecific competition played the important role on growth and distribution of invasive plant species and further influenced growth and diversity of plant communities. However, none has examined the both effects of interspecific competition on a worst alien invasive plant Erigeron annuus. In the greenhouse experiments, seedlings of invasive plant E. annuus and two co-existing herbs (a native herb Artemisia indica and a common crop Ipomoea batatas in the farmland) were subjected to the individual-based (without and with interspecific competition) and group-based competition [i.e. without and with interspecific competition under two distribution types (aggregation and segregation) of E. annuus]. Individual-based interspecific competition significantly affected aboveground mass, belowground mass and biomass of native A. indica and I. batatas, but did not affect growth of invasive E. annuus. Interspecific relative competition intensity (RCI) of aboveground mass and biomass mass were significantly lower in E. annuus than those in other two co-existing species. Group-based interspecific competition significantly decreased all growth measures of E. annuus. Under the segregation distribution, aboveground mass and biomass of E. annuus were significantly greater in the no competition than in the competition treatments, but was statistically the same between two competition treatments under the aggregation distribution. Moreover, RCI of biomass in E. annuus was significantly lower under the aggregation than under the segregation distribution. Therefore, E. annuus has high individual-based competitive ability, and aggregation distribution of E annuus can increased the group-based interspecific competitive ability with two co-existing herbs. In this contribution, new data concerning the Italian distribution of alien vascular flora are presented. It includes new records and exclusions for Italy or for Italian administrative regions of taxa in the genera Cedrus, Cenchrus, Citrus, Cyrtomium, Diospyros, Elaeagnus, Erigeron, Iris, Oenothera, Pavonia, Phytolacca, Styphnolobium, and Verbena. Background: The plants in the Erigeron genus of the Compositae (Asteraceae) family are commonly called fleabanes, possibly due to the belief that certain chemicals in these plants repel fleas. In the traditional Chinese medicine, Erigeron breviscapus, which is native to China, was widely used in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease. A handful of bioactive compounds, including scutellarin, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, and 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid, have been isolated from the plant. With the purpose of finding novel medicinal compounds and understanding their biosynthetic pathways, we propose to sequence the genome of E. breviscapus. Findings: We assembled the highly heterozygous E. breviscapus genome using a combination of PacBio single-molecular real-time sequencing and next-generation sequencing methods on the Illumina HiSeq platform. The final draft genome is approximately 1.2 Gb, with contig and scaffold N50 sizes of 18.8 kb and 31.5 kb, respectively. Further analyses predicted 37 504 protein-coding genes in the E. breviscapus genome and 8172 shared gene families among Compositae species. Conclusions: The E. breviscapus genome provides a valuable resource for the investigation of novel bioactive compounds in this Chinese herb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of paraquat, oxadiazon and oxyfluorfen herbicides was tested on two populations of hairy fleabane (Erigeron bonariensis L.), collected from a date palm orchard at Tal al-Ramil (Central Jordan Valley) and al-Twal (Northern Jordan Valley) sites using the recommended rates (0.5, 1.25 and 0.792kg a.i ha-1 for each herbicide, respectively) and 10-fold (5, 12.50 and 7.92 kg a.i. ha-1, respectively) under glasshouse conditions. Results showed that the date palm weed population was resistant to the three herbicides at both application rates and al-Twal site population was highly susceptible. Two field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of 12 herbicides in controlling the weed in the date palm orchard during the spring of 2017, revealed that E. bonariensis resists paraquat (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 kg a.i. ha-1), oxadiazon (1.25 kg a.i. ha-1) and oxyfluorfen (0.792 kg a.i. ha-1) herbicides. None of the three herbicides was effective against the weed and treated plants continued to grow normally similar to those of untreated control. Ten-fold higher rates of these herbicides failed to control the weed. The effect of other tested herbicides was variable with bromoxynil plus MCPA (buctril®M), 2,4-D- iso-octyl ester, glyphosate, glyphosate trimesium and triclopyr being the most effective and completely controlling the weed at recommended rates of application. It is concluded that the tested populations of E. bonariensis developed resistance to paraquat, oxadiazon and oxyfluorfen but control of the weed was possible using other herbicides with different mechanisms of action. Herbicide rotation or other nonchemical weed control methods have been suggested to prevent or reduce the buildup and spread of resistant populations of this weed. Erigeron annuus L. is a flowering herb of North America, Europe, Asia and Russia. This plant is used as folk medicine in China for the cure of indigestion, enteritis, epidemic hepatitis, haematuria and diabetes. Phytochemical studies showed the presence of 170 bioactive compounds like coumarins, flavonoids, terpenoids, polyacetylenic compounds; γ-pyrone derivatives, sterols and various caffeoylquinic acids derived from the essential oil and organic extracts from its various parts such as aerial parts, roots, leaves, stems and flowers. The pharmacological studies demonstrated various extracts and the compounds of E. annuus to exhibit anti-fungal, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, phytotoxic, cytoprotective, antiobesity and antioxidant activities. This article covers a critical compendious on geographical distribution, botanical description, phytochemistry, ethnomedicinal uses and pharmacological activities of E. annuus.
