The Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging (DAVINCI) mission described herein has been selected for flight to Venus as part of the NASA Discovery Program. DAVINCI will be the first mission to Venus to incorporate science-driven flybys and an instrumented descent sphere into a unified architecture. The anticipated scientific outcome will be a new understanding of the atmosphere, surface, and evolutionary path of Venus as a possibly once-habitable planet and analog to hot terrestrial exoplanets. The primary mission design for DAVINCI as selected features a preferred launch in summer/fall 2029, two flybys in 2030, and descent sphere atmospheric entry by the end of 2031. The in situ atmospheric descent phase subsequently delivers definitive chemical and isotopic composition of the Venus atmosphere during a cloud-top to surface transect above Alpha Regio. These in situ investigations of the atmosphere and near infrared descent imaging of the surface will complement remote flyby observations of the dynamic atmosphere, cloud deck, and surface near infrared emissivity. The overall mission yield will be at least 60 Gbits (compressed) new data about the atmosphere and near surface, as well as first unique characterization of the deep atmosphere environment and chemistry, including trace gases, key stable isotopes, oxygen fugacity, constraints on local rock compositions, and topography of a tessera., Comment: 41 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal

Experimental facilities dedicated to recreating the conditions on the surface of Venus are critical for advancing scientific understanding of the planet and developing the technologies needed to continue Venus exploration. These facilities should be supported and enhanced in the next decade to maximize our efforts to understand this key planet.

The field of exoplanetary science has emerged over the past two decades, rising up alongside traditional solar system planetary science. Both fields focus on understanding the processes which form and sculpt planets through time, yet there has been less scientific exchange between the two communities than is ideal. This white paper explores some of the institutional and cultural barriers which impede cross-discipline collaborations and suggests solutions that would foster greater collaboration. Continuous improvements of observations and modeling efforts have led to tremendous strides in exoplanetary science. However, as instruments and techniques advance laboratory data becomes more important to interpret exoplanet observations and verify theoretical modeling. Though experimental studies are often deferred due to their high costs and long timelines, it is imperative that laboratory investigations are prioritized to ensure steady advances in the field of exoplanetary science. The source of the unusually high radar reflectivity signal found on the highlands of Venus is hypothesized to be caused by a mineral with a high dielectric constant. We propose that this source could be a combination of tellurium, sulfur, and bismuth. All three elements are commonly outgassed in terrestrial eruption plumes and thus are likely to be found on Venus. To test our hypothesis, we used a Venus simulation chamber and studied the stability of various tellurium, bismuth, and sulfur mixtures at Venus temperatures and pressures and in atmospheres of CO2, 100 ppm SO2 in CO2, or 100 ppm COS in CO2. When mixed together bismuth, tellurium, and sulfur phases preferentially formed tetradymite (Bi2Te2S). The remaining minerals that formed in each experiment strongly depended on the initial mixture. For instance the Bi2S3/Bi2Te3 mixture experiments resulted in the original minerals as well as BiTe at hotter temperatures, meanwhile the Bi/Te/S mixture produced Bi2S3 and occasionally Bi2Te3, Bi(S,Te), and Bi4(S,Te)3 depending on the temperature/pressure. There is evidence that COS, but not SO2, affected the stability of some minerals. Due to the presence of these elements in volcanic gases we propose that they can be present in the highlands and can, at least in part, account for the high radar reflectivity signal on the highlands.
