ABSTRACT Faculty Development seeks to support educators in a range of functions in the areas of teaching, research, extension, management and evaluation. The aim of this study was to evaluate faculty development based on the social representations constructed by the teachers of a medical course. A qualitative survey was carried out, using the analytical method of discourse analysis and social representation as a theoretical contribution. Twelve teachers were randomly selected, and a semi-structured interview was conducted for the data collection. The responses, recorded in audio, were transcribed and discourse analysis was performed with the aim of mapping the social representations constructed by the subjects. The social representations were grouped into two categories: institutional development and personal development. Within the category institutional development, three subcategories were identified: Guiding principles of Faculty Development Programs, Teaching-learning strategies used in Faculty Development Programs, and Skills to be developed by faculty. Within the category Personal development, two subcategories were identified: Development as a person and as a social being, and Professional development. Over the years, a variety of social representations have been constructed in relation to the nature of teaching in medical education, but it is only in recent decades that managers and teachers of educational institutions have begun to focus more closely on this topic. In the present study, it was observed that for faculty development to be effective, the educator must have a desire to learn; however, institutional support and recognition are also essential. Faculty Development Programs must be flexible and adaptable, to meet the needs of the institution and its professors, and encourage reflection on their practices, though the exchange of experiences, the development of interpersonal relationships, and collaboration. However, it is vital to identify and facilitate the development of leadership skills, and to systematically evaluate the process and the results achieved. This will encourage teachers to develop in their academic careers and thereby increase the professionalization of teaching. Managers and teachers can sustain a shared mission to win resources, adapt to change, strive for excellence in the leadership of the organization in a national and international context, and consequently, provide a quality medical education.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the result of compression and/or traction of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. It is the most frequent compressive neuropathy of the upper limbs and it is usually idiopathic. Diagnosis is essentially clinical, defined by symptoms and provocative tests. Decompression of the median nerve by section of the transverse carpus ligament is the treatment of choice, but the lack of consensus on the type of suture and surgical thread to be used in the open carpal tunnel decompression surgery justifies the importance of evaluating the comparative results of existing studies, aiming to describe the influence of different types of sutures and surgical threads to guide the professionals about the most appropriate conduct. This is a systematic review of the international and national literature. Four studies comparing the influence of surgical threads and one study evaluating the influence of the type of suture were found. From the comparative studies, it was observed that there is advantage in the use of nonabsorbable suture due to the lower occurrence of inflammation and postoperative wound complications. When using Donatti sutures, wound edge inversion is less likely to occur compared with single individual sutures, but they are also related to longer postoperative pain.

Artigo já publicado. v. 6, n. 2 (2015) Identificar as principais causas de hospitalizações de crianças auxilia na percepção do perfil de adoecimento e na estratégia para elaboração de planos de atenção à saúde para prevenir o agravamento das doenças e diminuir o número de internações hospitalares. Objetivos: Obter, através de dados oficiais, informações sobre as principais causas de hospitalização em crianças de cinco a nove anos, para elaborar um perfil das principais doenças que têm levado à hospitalização no Brasil. Métodos: Pesquisa de abordagem quantitativa, descritiva, exploratória e inferencial, cujos dados foram obtidos através do site do DATASUS, no período compreendido entre os anos de 2008 e 2012. Resultados: Indicam uma distribuição heterogênea da morbidade entre as regiões pesquisadas, apresentando como a primeira causa de internação hospitalar em crianças de cinco a nove anos, as doenças do aparelho respiratório, seguido de doenças infecciosas do aparelho gastrointestinal e da pele e subcutâneo. Os dados demonstram a maneira que os serviços de saúde podem se organizar para implementar a integralidade na atenção à saúde para a faixa etária em questão, priorizando à atenção primária, na prevenção dos agravos das doenças do aparelho respiratório e das infecções do aparelho gastrointestinal, da pele e subcutâneo. As doenças citadas fazem parte das doenças cujo acometimento se dá por causas sensíveis à atenção ambulatorial e podem ser evitadas e/ou minimizadas por intervenções no âmbito da Atenção Primária à Saúde.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a prevalência de sintomas depressivos de uma população idosa residente em uma comunidade de Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brasil, e avaliar sua associação com aspectos biopsicossociais e capacidade funcional. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal, observacional e de base populacional. Foi avaliada a totalidade dos idosos residentes na área de abrangência de uma Equipe de Saúde da Família, sendo eles entrevistados em seus domicílios. Foi utilizado questionário adaptado do Brazil Old Age Schedule (BOAS) para coletar os dados biopsicossociais. Para avaliar sintomas depressivos, foi aplicada a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica abreviada (EDG-15). A escala de Katz foi utilizada para avaliar as atividades básicas de vida diária (ABVD) e a escala de Pfeffer, para atividades instrumentais de vida diária (AIVD). As associações foram verificadas mediante submissão dos dados à análise bivariada e multivariada. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de sintomatologia depressiva foi de 20,9%. Apresentaram associação significativa com sintomas depressivos: dificuldade para dormir (RP = 2,04; p = 0,002) e dependência para AIVD (RP = 3,22; p < 0,001). CONCLUSÃO: Há alta prevalência de sintomas depressivos entre idosos no âmbito comunitário, sendo mais frequentes entre idosos com dificuldade para dormir e com dependência funcional para AIVD.OBJECTIVE: To verify the prevalence of depressive symptoms of an elder population dwelling in a community in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and evaluate the association of them with biopsychosocial aspects and functional capacity. METHODS: Transversal, observational, and population-based study. All of the elders living in the coverage area of a Family Health Team, and the interviews were made in their dwellings. An adaptation of the Brazil Old Age Schedule (BOAS) questionnaire was used to collect the biopsychosocial data. The abbreviated Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms. The Katz index was used to evaluate the basic activities of daily living (BADL); the Pfeffer index to evaluate instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). The associations were verified by submitting data to bivariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was of 20.9%. Depressive symptoms were significative associated with difficulty to sleep (PR = 2.04; p = 0.002) and dependence for IADL (PR = 3.22; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: There is a high prevalence of depressive symptoms among elders in the community, being more frequent among elders with difficulty to sleep and functional dependence for IADL.
