Abstract

The subject of this contribution is the study of the Lov\'asz-Schrijver PSD-operator N+ applied to the edge relaxation of the stable set polytope of a graph. We are particularly interested in the problem of characterizing graphs for which N+ generates the stable set polytope in one step, called N+-perfect graphs. It is conjectured that the only N+-perfect graphs are those whose stable set polytope is described by inequalities with near-bipartite support. So far, this conjecture has been proved for near-perfect graphs, fs-perfect graphs, and webs. Here, we verify it for line graphs, by proving that in an N+-perfect line graph the only facet-defining graphs are cliques and odd holes.

3. Lift-and-project ranks of the stable set polytope of joined a-perfect graphs

Abstract

In this paper we study lift-and-project polyhedral operators defined by Lov?asz and Schrijver and Balas, Ceria and Cornu?ejols on the clique relaxation of the stable set polytope of web graphs. We compute the disjunctive rank of all webs and consequently of antiweb graphs. We also obtain the disjunctive rank of the antiweb constraints for which the complexity of the separation problem is still unknown. Finally, we use our results to provide bounds of the disjunctive rank of larger classes of graphs as joined a-perfect graphs, where near-bipartite graphs belong.

Abstract

We study the Lov\'asz-Schrijver lift-and-project operator ($LS_+$) based on the cone of symmetric, positive semidefinite matrices, applied to the fractional stable set polytope of graphs. The problem of obtaining a combinatorial characterization of graphs for which the $LS_+$-operator generates the stable set polytope in one step has been open since 1990. We call these graphs $LS_+$-perfect. In the current contribution, we pursue a full combinatorial characterization of $LS_+$-perfect graphs and make progress towards such a characterization by establishing a new, close relationship among $LS_+$-perfect graphs, near-bipartite graphs and a newly introduced concept of full-support-perfect graphs., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Undoped CeO2, co-doped and tri-doped CeO2 with Si, Si-Al and Si-Fe, were prepared by sol-gel method. Nanoparticles with an average crystal size of 2-10 nm, were obtained and structurally characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Powders were compacted by uniaxial pressure and sintered in air at 1250 °C to obtained sintered pellets. The different compositions maintained the cerianite crystal structure, implying that dopant elements enter in the structure forming a solid solution, although some segregation was observed by SEM and TEM analysis in pellets. The undoped CeO2 material reached a relative density of 0.95% at 1250°C while doped samples presented variations in this value and grain size and relative density, clearly attributed to doping. According to these results, these materials could have potential applications in solid oxide fuel cells, electrodes and sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

COVID-19; Registries; Vaccination COVID-19; Registros; Vacunación COVID-19; Registres; Vacunació Vaccine hesitancy is considered a major barrier to achieving herd immunity against COVID-19. While multiple alternative and synergistic approaches including heterologous vaccination, booster doses, and antiviral drugs have been developed, equitable vaccine uptake remains the foremost strategy to manage pandemic. Although none of the currently approved vaccines are live-attenuated, several reports of disease flares, waning protection, and acute-onset syndromes have emerged as short-term adverse events after vaccination. Hence, scientific literature falls short when discussing potential long-term effects in vulnerable cohorts. The COVAD-2 survey follows on from the baseline COVAD-1 survey with the aim to collect patient-reported data on the long-term safety and tolerability of COVID-19 vaccines in immune modulation. The e-survey has been extensively pilot-tested and validated with translations into multiple languages. Anticipated results will help improve vaccination efforts and reduce the imminent risks of COVID-19 infection, especially in understudied vulnerable groups. 19. Lift on side by side intruders of various geometries within a granular flow

Abstract

Obstacles within fluids have been widely used in engineering and in physics to study hydrodynamic interactions. In granular matter, objects within a granular flow have helped to understand fundamental features of drag and lift forces. In our group, we have studied numerically the flow mediated interaction between two static disks within a vertical granular flow in a two-dimensional container where the flow velocity and the distance between obstacles were varied. Attractive and repulsive forces were found depending on flow velocity and separation between intruders. The simulations evidenced a relationship between the average flow velocity in a specific section ahead of the obstacles and the attractive-repulsive lift. On the other hand, it was showed that the lift force on an object dragged within a granular medium depends on the shape of the intruder. Here we present experimental results of the interaction between two side-by-side intruders of different shapes within a vertical granular flow. We built a quasi-two-dimensional container in which we placed the intruders and using load cells we measured lift and drag forces during the discharge process for different flow velocities.

Abstract

Summary Background Asymptomatic carriers of SARS-CoV-2 can be a vehicle for transmission of the infection. This fact is of particular importance in the case of healthcare workers (HCWs). Design Cross-sectional study in HCWs in a medium size hospital in the South of Spain. Methods Between 15 and 25 April 2020, naso- and oropharyngeal PCR determination was performed together with IgG and IgM antibody determination by immunochromatography to the HCWs of the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella of the units involved in patient care with COVID-19: Emergencies, Intensive Care and Anesthesia, Internal Medicine and Pneumology. Other units not directly involved in the care of these patients were offered to participate. On the day of sampling, a health questionnaire was answered, reporting symptoms on the same day and in the previous 14 days. Results Four hundred and ninety-eight HCWs were studied. Two individuals were detected with PCR for SARS-CoV2 positive. Both were asymptomatic on the day of sampling, but one of them had had a COVID-19 compatible picture in the previous two weeks and had positive IgG and IgM; therefore, only one subject was truly asymptomatic carrier (0.2%). Nine workers with positive IgG (1.8%) were detected. Conclusions The prevalence of asymptomatic carriers among health workers of the services directly involved in the care of patients with COVID-19 was very low in our center. This type of strategy can be one more tool in controlling the pandemic.

Abstract

Background Many Spanish hospitals converted scheduled in-person visits to telephone visits during the COVID-19 lockdown. There is scarce information about the performance of those visits. Aim To compare telephone visits during the COVID-19 lockdown period with previous in-person visits. Design Retrospective descriptive study. Methods Telephone visits from 15 March to 31 May 2020 were compared with in-person visits during the same period in 2019. Main measures The proportions of both groups were compared in term of failure to contact patient, requested diagnostic tests/referrals, discharges, admissions and emergency visits within 30–60 days. A sample of patients, and all participating physicians completed surveys. Z -score test was used (statistical significance P <0.05). Results A total of 5602 telephone visits were conducted. In comparison to in-person visits, telephone visits showed higher rates of visit compliance (95.9% vs. 85.2%, P <0.001) and discharges (22.12% vs. 11.82%; P <0.001), and lower number of ancillary tests and referrals. During the 30- and 60-day periods following the telephone visit, a reduction of 52% and 47% in the combined number of emergency department visits and hospital admissions was observed compared to in-person visits (P <0.01). Of the 120 patients surveyed, 95% were satisfied/very satisfied with the telephone visits. Of the 26 physicians, 84.6% considered telephone visits were useful to prioritize patients. Conclusions During health emergencies, previously scheduled outpatient in-person visits can be converted to telephone visits, reducing absenteeism, increasing the rate of discharges and reducing ancillary tests and referrals without increasing the rate of hospital admissions or emergency department visits. Abstract

Fish meal is still the main protein in feed formulations, unsustainable development and overfishing practices reduce captures since last decade. An increasing demand for high quality feed for aquaculture force the evaluation of new protein sources. Jatropha curcas meal was used in a 45 day feeding trial at five different inclusion levels ranging from 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60% as a substitute for fish meal in the diets of Nile tilapia juveniles. Both growth and feed efficiency were evaluated. It was found that tilapia fed 0% Jatropha curcas meal inclusion were significantly heavier and larger while treatments containing 30% inclusion gave the best survival. However, digestibility decreased as inclusion levels increased. The juveniles accepted all the different diet inclusions and presented normal behavior. Gross energy and crude lipid contents were significantly higher for Jatropha curcas meal than for fish meal and soybean meal. Amino acids and fatty acids content of Jatropha curcas meal were acceptable, thus suggesting its feasibility as an alternative plant ingredient for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) diets. Better results could be achieved by standardizing lipid extraction and treatments to increase the digestibility of Jatropha curcas meal. This study contains novel information on developing strategies that provide alternative protein sources in tilapia feed formulation.

Abstract

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the effect of minor glycosides on the QUICKI index as a marker of insulin resistance, triglycerides (TG), and antioxidant capacity in Wistar rats induced with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2). DM2 was induced in male Wistar rats (n = 35) through streptozotocin-nicotinamide. Hyperglycaemia was confirmed two weeks later, the subjects were divided into seven experimental groups, and each group was treated as follows: (1-5) dulcoside A, steviolbioside, rebaudioside B, C, and D (20 mg/kg, respectively); (6) metformin (180 mg/kg); and (7) standard diet, orally for four weeks. Blood sample was obtained from the tail before and after the treatment. The serum was separated after clotting by centrifugation. The included parameters namely serum triglycerides (TG) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were measured before and after the treatments, then the changes were determined; and at the end of the treatment, the QUICKI index was determined. The analysis of one-way variance (ANOVA) was performed considering p < 0.05. No statistically significant differences were found in any of the three variables (p > 0.05); however, the rebaudioside group B had the highest QUICKI index, while the reduction of triglycerides was greater in rebaudioside D. SOD activity increased in all groups, but was higher in rebaudioside D and steviolbioside. Minor glycosides at the dose and time evaluated had no significant effects on QUICKI index, antioxidant capacity, and triglycerides concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Large-area vertically orientated and high-density ZnO nanorod arrays (NRAs) have been electrochemically grown directly onto IZO:Ga thin film transparent conductive oxide (TCO) substrates. For the sake of comparison, ZnO NRAs have also been electrodeposited onto conventional TCO/glass substrates (F-doped SnO2 (FTO) and Sn-doped In2O3 (ITO). The morphological and structural properties of the resulting ZnO NRAs have been studied. The nucleation and growth mechanism (NGM) that governs the electrochemical growth of these ZnO nanostructures onto these TCO substrates were investigated, demonstrating that the IZO:Ga thin film triggers the orientated and structured growth of ZnO nanorods. ZnO nanorods of ca. 225 nm, 256 nm and 259 nm in diameter and ZnO NRAs densities values of 2.05 * 108 cm-2, 2.27 * 108 cm-2 and 7.83 * 108 cm-2 have been obtained when deposited onto these FTO, ITO and IZO:Ga thin film substrates, respectively. NGM study results indicate that onto FTO and ITO after an initial current decay (following a Cottrell law), a 3D instantaneous nuclei formation limited by lattice incorporation takes place. Whereas onto the IZO:Ga substrate, at the early stages a new contribution 3D instantaneous nucleation under diffusion control, appeared, revealing that these densely packed IZO:Ga nanocrystals may act as homo-epitaxial nucleation sites. Abstract

The capillary filling speed of wetting liquids of varying viscosity and surface tension in hydrophilic nanochannels with an elastic capping layer has been analyzed. The channels, with a height just below 80 nm, are suspended by a thin flexible membrane that easily deforms due to the negative pressure which develops behind the moving meniscus. In the elastocapillary filling of the channels, two opposite effects compete: the decreased cross channel sections increase the flow resistance, while the Laplace pressure that acts as the driving force becomes more negative due to the increased meniscus curvature. Although the meniscus position shows a square root of time behavior as described by the Washburn relation, the net result of the induced bending of the membranes is a definite increase of the filling speed. We propose a relatively straightforward model for this elastocapillary process and present experimental results of the filling speed of ethanol, water, cyclohexane, and acetone that are found to be in good agreement with the presented model, for membrane deflections of up to 80% of the original channel height. Abstract

Se presentan recomendaciones basadas en la literatura actual para la nutrición posnatal del prematuro, según grupos de peso al nacer: menores de 1.000 g, de 1.000 a 1.500 g y mayores de 1.500 g, y períodos de evolución: adaptación, estabilización y crecimiento. Se revisa el manejo nutricional de las morbilidades que afectan o pueden afectar la nutrición: osteopenia, displasia broncopulmonar, ductus persistente, trasfusión de glóbulos rojos e intestino corto. Recommendations based on current publications are presented for postnatal preterm nutrition, depending on birth weight: less 1000 g, between 1000 and 1500 g, and above 1500 g, as well for the development periods: adaptation, stabilisation, and growth. A review is also presented on the nutritional management of morbidities that affect or may affect nutrition, such as: osteopenia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, patent ductus arteriosus, red cell transfusion, and short bowel syndrome.
