Abstract

Most advances in metaoptics have been made at visible wavelengths and above; in contrast, the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) has barely been explored despite numerous scientific and technological opportunities. Creating metaoptic elements at this short wavelength is challenging due to the scarcity of VUV transparent materials and the small sizes of the required nanostructures. Here, we present the first transmissive VUV (175 nm) metalens. By using UV-grade silica and trading-off the Nyquist requirement for subwavelength structures against feasibility of the fabrication process, we achieve a step-change in diffraction efficiencies for wavelengths shorter than 300 nm. Our large numerical aperture (NA = 0.5) metalens shows an average diffraction efficiency of (53.3 +- 1.4)%. This demonstration opens up new avenues for compact flat optic systems operating in the VUV range.

Abstract

Metalenses are composed of nanostructures for focusing light and have been widely explored in many exciting applications. However, their expanding dimensions pose simulation challenges. We propose a method to simulate metalenses in a timely manner using vectorial wave and ray tracing models. We sample the metalens' radial phase gradient and locally approximate it by a linear phase response. Each sampling point is modeled as a binary blazed grating, employing the chosen nanostructure, to build a transfer function set. The metalens transmission or reflection is then obtained by applying the corresponding transfer function to the incoming field on the regions surrounding each sampling point. Fourier optics is used to calculate the scattered fields under arbitrary illumination for the vectorial wave method and a Monte Carlo algorithm is used in the ray tracing formalism. We validated our method against finite difference time domain simulations at 632 nm and we were able to simulate metalenses larger than 3000lambda0 in diameter on a personal computer., Comment: 10 pages

Abstract

Detector instrumentation is at the heart of scientific discoveries. Cutting edge technologies enable US particle physics to play a leading role worldwide. This report summarizes the current status of instrumentation for High Energy Physics (HEP), the challenges and needs of future experiments and indicates high priority research areas. The Snowmass Instrumentation Frontier studies detector technologies and Research and Development (R&D) needed for future experiments in collider physics, neutrino physics, rare and precision physics and at the cosmic frontier. It is divided into more or less diagonal areas with some overlap among a few of them. We lay out five high-level key messages that are geared towards ensuring the health and competitiveness of the US detector instrumentation community, and thus the entire particle physics landscape., Comment: 53 pages, 0 figures, contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

The Photon Detectors Topical Group has identified two areas where focused R&D over the next decade could have a large impact in High Energy Physics Experiments. These areas described here are characterized by the convergence of a compelling scientific need and recent technological advances. Key messages: IF02-1 The development of detectors with the capability of counting single photons from IR to UV has been a very active area in the last decade. We now need to pursue R\&D to implement these in HEP experiments by making larger arrays, improving their energy resolution, timing, dark counts rates and extending their wavelength coverage. IF02-2 New photon detector developments are being considered for planned future neutrino experiments going beyond the current technologies. Concept demonstrations have been done, and we now need to move from a conceptual phase to working detectors. The science for generation, detection and manipulation of light is extremely fast moving and driven mainly from outside our field. Abstract

In the last decade, several photon counting technologies have been developed opening a new window for experiments in the low photon number regime. Several ongoing and future projects in HEP benefit from these developments, which will also have a large impact outside HEP. During the next decade there is a clear technological opportunity to fully develop these sensors and produce a large impact in HEP. In this white paper we discuss the need for photon counting technologies in future projects, and present some technological opportunities to address those needs.

Abstract

In the Fall of 2017, two photon detector designs for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Far Detector were installed and tested in the TallBo liquid argon (LAr) cryostat at the Proton Assembly (PAB) facility, Fermilab. The designs include two light bars developed at Indiana University and a photon detector based on the ARAPUCA light trap engineered by Colorado State University and Fermilab. The performance of these devices is determined by analyzing 8 weeks of cosmic ray data. The current paper focuses solely on the ARAPUCA device as the performance of the light bars will be reported separately. The paper briefly describes the ARAPUCA concept, the TallBo setup, and focuses on data analysis and results.

Abstract

Hydropower is currently one of the leading renewable energy sources in developing countries. Despite the benefits that it can provide, it also triggers significant environmental impacts, such as changes in the reservoirs’ water quality. In quantifying those changes, dissolved oxygen (DO) is used as one of the water quality indicators and is the most used variable to quantify water quality and analyze water pollution. This paper aims to establish a relationship between water quality and hydrometeorological variables in tropical reservoirs to better estimate dissolved oxygen. Univariate and multivariate techniques were used to analyze temporal and spatial changes in watersheds to better select vital variables for the forecast model, such as Vector Autoregression (VAR). The results show that, for all monitoring stations, the water quality variables associated with the DO process are COD, BOD, and PO₄. Likewise, precipitation and flow discharge were the hydrometeorological parameters that had the most significant impact on DO. Also, the principal component analysis (PCA) allowed us to identify that the strength of the relationships between water quality and hydrometeorology changes depending on the location of the monitoring site. Finally, the implementation of a VAR model showed good performance metrics for dissolved oxygen predictions based on all analyses.

Abstract

A comprehensive review of the recent results on measurements of single top-quark production cross-sections at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7, 8 and 13 TeV performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations is presented. The cross-section measurements include inclusive, fiducial and differential results. In addition, the latest measurements, based on angular distributions in $t$-channel single-top-quark processes, of the top-quark polarisation and $W$ boson spin observables at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV, and the analyses of the $Wtb$ vertex at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7 and 8 TeV are also discussed. 40. Clinical and Economic Consequences of a First Major Bleeding Event in Patients Treated with Direct Factor Xa Inhibitors in Spain: A Long-Term Observational Study.

Abstract

Aims: Our aims were to describe the clinical characteristics, adverse clinical events, healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs of patients with major bleeding during direct Factor Xa inhibitor (FXai) use. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study that included secondary data from computerized health records of seven Spanish Autonomous Communities. Patients with a first major bleeding during treatment with a direct FXai were analyzed during a 3-year period. Results: Of 8972 patients taking a direct FXai, 470 (5.24%) had major bleeding (mean age (SD) 77.93 (9.71) years, 61.06% women). The most frequent indications for using FXais were atrial fibrillation (78.09%) and venous thromboembolism (17.66%). Among those with major bleeding, 88.94% presented with gastrointestinal bleeding, 6.81% intracranial bleeding, 2.13% trauma-related bleeding and 4.26% other major bleeding. Prothrombin complex concentrates were used in 63.19%, followed by transfusion of blood products (20.21%) and Factor VIIa (7.66%). In total, 4.26% of patients died in the hospital due to the first major bleeding. At the study end (after 3-year follow-up), 28.94% of the patients had died, 12.34% had a myocardial infarction and 9.15% an ischemic stroke. At year 3, overall bleeding cost was EUR 5,816,930.5, of which 79.74% accounted for in-hospital costs to treat the bleeding episode. Conclusions: Despite the use of replacement agents being high, major events were common, with a 29% mortality at the end of the follow up, and HCRU and costs were high, evidencing the need for new reversal treatment strategies.
