Objective: This study aims to explore the interconnections between social anxiety disorder (SAD), adverse childhood experiences, and pathological narcissism. Methods: The study included 66 patients diagnosed with SAD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition criteria and 55 healthy controls. All participants were assessed using The Liebowitz Social Phobia Scale (LSAS), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale (HSNS), and Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 (NPI-16) scales. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Student’s t-test, Chi-squared test, correlation tests to examine relationships between variables, and logistic regression to identify significant predictors of SAD, particularly focusing on the role of childhood trauma and narcissistic traits. Results: The SAD patients had significantly higher scores on the CTQ total and subscales, as well as on the HSNS, compared to the healthy control group (p < .001). Additionally, there was a positive correlation between LSAS scores and both CTQ (r=.585, p < .01) and HSNS scores (r=.582, p < .01). However, no significant association was found between NPI-16 scores and LSAS or CTQ scores (r=-.064, p>.05). Conclusion: This study highlights the increased levels of narcissistic pathology and history of childhood trauma in SAD patients. Vulnerable narcissism emerges as a key factor in SAD, emphasizing the need for comprehensive treatment approaches considering childhood trauma and narcissistic vulnerability.

ABSTRACT Background It is still not fully explained what kind of cognitive sources the methods used in the assessment of listening effort are more sensitive to and how these measurement results are related to each other. The aim of the study is to ascertain which neural resources crucial for listening effort are most sensitive to objective measurement methods using differently degraded speech stimuli. Methods A total of 49 individuals between the ages of 19 and 34 with normal hearing participated in the study. In the first stage, simultaneous pupillometry, electroencephalogram (EEG), and single‐task paradigm reaction time (RT) measurements were made during the challenging listening and repetition task with noise‐vocoded speech. Two speech reception thresholds (SRT) (50% and 80%) for two vocoding conditions (16 and 6 channels) were collected, resulting in 4 conditions. In the second stage, the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and the test of attention in listening (TAIL) were applied. Stepwise linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the predictors of listening effort measurements. Results A significant difference was found between 6 and 16 channel stimuli in both pupil dilation change and EEG alpha band power change. In the hardest listening condition, whereas RAVLT scores are significant predictors of pupil dilation change, TAIL scores are significant predictors of EEG alpha power. As the stimulus difficulty decreased, the factors that predicted both EEG and pupillometry results decreased. In the single‐task paradigm, a significant regression model could not be obtained at all four difficulty levels. Conclusion As a result of the study, it was found that the pupil dilation change was more sensitive to auditory memory skills and the EEG alpha power change was more sensitive to auditory attention skills. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the sensitivity of different listening effort measurement methods to auditory cognitive skills.

ABSTRACT Objectives The objective of this study was to investigate whether residual inhibition (RI), which provides information on the relationship between tinnitus and increased spontaneous activity in the auditory system, is a predictor for the success of sound enrichment treatment. Design Tinnitus patients were divided into two groups based on whether RI was achieved (RI+) or not (RI−). All participants underwent sound enrichment. Psychosomatic measures (for tinnitus severity, discomfort, attention deficit and sleep difficulties), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), minimum masking level (MML), and tinnitus loudness level (TLL) results were compared before and at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. Study sample Sixty‐seven chronic tinnitus patients were divided into two groups based on whether RI was achieved (RI+) or not (RI−). There were 38 patients in the RI+ group and 29 in the RI− group. Results There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in psychosomatic measures, THI, MML and TLL scores at the post‐treatment 6 months after treatment (p

Digital image correlation (DIC) was used to examine the strain distribution of heat-treated beech and Uludag fir woods in mechanical testing. It also evaluated the effects of the heat treatment process on the properties of the wood samples. The physical (mass/density loss, dimensional stability, color change, and surface roughness), mechanical (flexure test and compressive strength), morphological, thermal, and structural properties of the heat-treated wood were examined. It was determined that the heat treatment parameters can be optimized using the DIC method. The test results showed that although heat treatment can provide improved physical and thermal properties, it caused micro-crack formations and collapses in the wood cells. As a consequence, the mechanical properties of the heat-treated wood materials decreased with the heat treatment process. There were slight differences in the curves of the samples according to Fourier infrared and X-ray diffraction analyses. Morphological characterization showed that the heat treatment triggered large cracks in the cell wall and lumens and the morphological structure of heat-treated wood was affected at large percentages.

Wood has many uses as raw material and after being processed. Since the use of wood as raw material is limited, the interaction of physical and chemical processes with technological developments has led to new products and new areas of use. Transparent wood production, for example, has emerged to provide maximum efficiency from heat and light. In this study, sodium chlorite and deep eutectic solvents (DES) obtained from choline chloride and lactic acid were used. In the production of transparent wood, 1- and 2-mm thick beech wood veneers (Fagus orientalis L.) and two-component transparent epoxy resin were used as filler. As a result of delignification processes, the highest delignification rate was obtained with 59 % in wood samples treated with NaClO2. Transparent wood production was obtained from the samples where the most delignification took place. The adhesion of the epoxy used in the production of transparent wood in the wood cells was determined by SEM analysis. The tensile strength of the transparent wood samples increased by 31 % compared with the control samples. The study results contribute to the literature on the efficiency of different delignification methods.

- Abstract
Season of birth, a surrogate of seasonal variation of environmental exposures, has been associated with increased risk of several cancers. In the context of a Southern-Eastern Europe (SEE) consortium, we explored the potential association of birth seasonality with childhood (0–14 years) central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Primary CNS tumor cases (n = 6,014) were retrieved from 16 population-based SEE registries (1983–2015). Poisson regression and meta-analyses on birth season were performed in nine countries with available live birth data (n = 4,987). Subanalyses by birth month, age, gender and principal histology were also conducted. Children born during winter were at a slightly increased risk of developing a CNS tumor overall [incidence rate ratio (IRR): 1.06, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.99–1.14], and of embryonal histology specifically (IRR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.01–1.27). The winter peak of embryonal tumors was higher among boys (IRR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.05–1.46), especially during the first 4 years of life (IRR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.03–1.71). In contrast, boys

Eser, Sultan (Balikesir Author), Background/Aims: There are wide variations in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence across the world. Historically, the highest incidence rates have been reported historically in more developed countries; however, increasing trends have been seen in developing countries. Here, we present the CRC incidence pattern in Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, and Izmir, Turkey, which are countries of the Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC). Materials and Methods: We analyzed 2005-2010 CRC data from population-based registries and calculated crude and age standardized rates for CRC, colon and rectum subsites, and annual percent changes (APCs) for trends. Results: The age-adjusted incidence rates (AAIRs) for CRC were the highest in Israeli Jews (IJ) (46.7 for males and 35.5 for females), which exceeded those of the USA Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result (SEER) program registries. In both sexes, AAIRs in Cyprus and Israeli Arabs (IA) were close to those in SEER registries. For both sexes, AAIRs in Izmir and Jordan were substantially lower than those in other registries. Statistically significant decreasing trends over time were observed in AAIRs for both sexes in the SEER program (APCs: males, -3.24% and females, -2.54%), whereas the trends varied within the MECC registries. There were decreasing AAIR trends for males in IJ and IA and for females in Cyprus and IJ; APC for females in IJ (-4.29%) was significant. Conversely, increasing trends with the significant APCs were observed in males in Izmir (2.43%) and Jordan (7.57%). Conclusion: MECC countries comprise both high- and low-risk populations for CRCs. However, increasing trends in low-risk populations have been alarming. Thus, the need for implementing tailored primary and secondary prevention programs in the region is essential.

Abstract Objective This study aims to control all hearing thresholds, including extended high frequencies (EHFs), presents stimuli of varying difficulty levels, and measures electroencephalography (EEG) and pupillometry responses to determine whether listening difficulty in tinnitus patients is effort or fatigue‐related. Methods Twenty‐one chronic tinnitus patients and 26 matched healthy controls having normal pure‐tone averages with symmetrical hearing thresholds were included. Subjects were evaluated with 0.125−20 kHz pure‐tone audiometry, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test (MoCA), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), EEG, and pupillometry. Results Pupil dilatation and EEG alpha power during the “encoding” phase of the presented sentence in tinnitus patients were less in all listening conditions (p .05). Conclusion EEG and pupillometry results under various listening conditions indicate potential listening effort in tinnitus patients even if all frequencies, including EHFs, are controlled. Also, we suggest that pupillometry should be interpreted with caution in autonomic nervous system‐related conditions such as tinnitus.

Abstract Objective In previous animal studies, sound enhancement reduced tinnitus perception in cases associated with hearing loss. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of sound enrichment therapy in tinnitus treatment by developing a protocol that includes criteria for psychoacoustic characteristics of tinnitus to determine whether the etiology is related to hearing loss. Methods A total of 96 patients with chronic tinnitus were included in the study. Fifty‐two patients in the study group and 44 patients in the placebo group considered residual inhibition (RI) outcomes and tinnitus pitches. Both groups received sound enrichment treatment with different spectrum contents. The tinnitus handicap inventory (THI), visual analog scale (VAS), minimum masking level (MML), and tinnitus loudness level (TLL) results were compared before and at 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. Results There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in THI, VAS, MML, and TLL scores from the first month to all months after treatment (p

Metal coordination complexes of the sterically hindered β-diketonate, 2,6-dimesitylbenzoyl pinacolone (esac), are reported for Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn. All four form ML2-type complexes with typical coordination behavior for late-metal β-diketonates, however the effects on established electrochemistry and reactivity vary somewhat per metal. For example, the striking chemical and electrochemical inertness of CoII(esac)2 to oxidation and disproportionation is atypical. Conversely, the behavior of CuII(esac)2 is rather typical relative to other CuII(β-diketonate)2 complexes. These data suggest a relative disfavoring of certain reaction pathways, and represent an important step in modulating the catalysis of the base metals via sterically hindered β-diketonates.

Bulky β-diketones have rarely exceeded dipivaloylmethane (DPM) in steric demand, largely due to synthetic limitations of the Claisen condensation. This work demonstrates hindered acid chlorides to be selective electrophiles in noncoordinating solvents for condensations with enolates. An improved synthesis of DPM is described (90% yield), and crowded β-diketones featuring bulky o-biphenyl or m-terphenyl fragments were prepared in good to excellent yields. These compounds are anticipated to have a steric profile far greater than that of DPM. General reaction conditions and mechanistic considerations are included.

Objective. Ovarian cancers comprise several histologically distinct tumour groups with widely different prognosis. We aimed to describe the worldwide distribution of ovarian cancer histology and to understand what role this may play in international variation in survival. Methods. The CONCORD programme is the largest population-based study of global trends in cancer survival. Data on 681,759 women diagnosed during 1995–2009 with cancer of the ovary, fallopian tube, peritoneum and retroperitonum in 51 countries were included. We categorised ovarian tumours into six histological groups, and explored the worldwide distribution of histology. Results. During 2005–2009, type II epithelial tumours were the most common. The proportion was much higher in Oceania (73.1%), North America (73.0%) and Europe (72.6%) than in Central and South America (65.7%) and Asia (56.1%). By contrast, type I epithelial tumours were more common in Asia (32.5%), compared with only 19.4% in North America. From 1995 to 2009, the proportion of type II epithelial tumours increased from 68.6% to 71.1%, while the proportion of type I epithelial tumours fell from 23.8% to 21.2%. The proportions of germ cell tumours, sex cord-stromal tumours, other specific non-epithelial tumours and tumours of non-specific morphology all remained stable over time. Conclusions. The distribution of ovarian cancer histology varieswidely worldwide. Type I epithelial, germcell and sex cord-stromal tumours are generally associated with higher survival than type II tumours, so the proportion of these tumours may influence survival estimates for all ovarian cancers combined. The distribution of histological groups should be considered when comparing survival between countries and regions.

Background Cancer is a major cause of death in children worldwide, and the recorded incidence tends to increase with time. Internationally comparable data on childhood cancer incidence in the past two decades are scarce. This study aimed to provide internationally comparable local data on the incidence of childhood cancer to promote research of causes and implementation of childhood cancer control. Methods This population-based registry study, devised by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in collaboration with the International Association of Cancer Registries, collected data on all malignancies and nonmalignant neoplasms of the CNS diagnosed before age 20 years in populations covered by high-quality cancer registries with complete data for 2001-10. Incidence rates per million person-years for the 0-14 years and 0-19 years age groups were age-adjusted using the world standard population to provide age-standardised incidence rates (WSRs), using the age-specific incidence rates (ASR) for individual age groups (0-4 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years, and 15-19 years). All rates were reported for 19 geographical areas or ethnicities by sex, age group, and cancer type. The regional WSRs for children aged 0-14 years were compared with comparable data obtained in the 1980s. Findings Of 532 invited cancer registries, 153 registries from 62 countries, departments, and territories met quality standards, and contributed data for the entire decade of 2001-10. 385 509 incident cases in children aged 0-19 years occurring in 2.64 billion person-years were included. The overall WSR was 140.6 per million person-years in children aged 0-14 years (based on 284 649 cases), and the most common cancers were leukaemia (WSR 46.4), followed by CNS tumours (WSR 28.2), and lymphomas (WSR 15.2). In children aged 15-19 years (based on 100 860 cases), the ASR was 185.3 per million person-years, the most common being lymphomas (ASR 41.8) and the group of epithelial tumours and melanoma (ASR 39.5). Incidence varied considerably between and within the described regions, and by cancer type, sex, age, and racial and ethnic group. Since the 1980s, the global WSR of registered cancers in children aged 0-14 years has increased from 124.0 (95% CI 123.3-124.7) to 140.6 (140.1-141.1) per million person-years. Interpretation This unique global source of childhood cancer incidence will be used for aetiological research and to inform public health policy, potentially contributing towards attaining several targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The observed geographical, racial and ethnic, age, sex, and temporal variations require constant monitoring and research., International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Union for International Cancer Control.

- Abstract
Background: Despite recent therapeutic advancements, Wilms tumour (WT) presents remarkable survival variations. We explored mortality and survival patterns for children (0–14 years) with WT in 12 Southern and Eastern European (SEE) countries in comparison with the United States of America (USA). Methods: A total of 3966 WT cases (0–14 years) were registered by a network of SEE childhood cancer registries (N:1723) during available registration periods circa 1990–2016 and surveillance, epidemiology, and end results program (SEER) (N:2243; 1990–2012); mortality data were provided by the respective national statistical services. Kaplan–Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the role of age, sex, year of diagnosis, urbanisation and Human Development Index (HDI) on overall survival (OS). Results: Persisting regional variations shape an overall 78% 5-year OS in the participating SEE countries, lagging behind the USA figure (92%, p=0.001) and also reflected by higher SEE mortality rates. Worth mentioning is the gradually escalating OS in SEE (hazard ratio [HR] 5-year increment :0.67, 95% confidence interval [CI]:0.60, 0.75) vs. a non-significant 10% improvement in the SEER data, which had a high starting value. OS differentials [two-fold less favourable among children aged 10–14 years, boys and those living in rural SEE areas (HR:1.37; CI:1.10–1.71) or countries with inferior HDI (2–3-fold)] were minimal in the USA. Conclusions: Children with WT residing in SEE countries do not equally enjoy the substantial survival gains, especially for those living in rural areas and in lower HDI countries. Noteworthy are steep and sizeable survival gains in SEE along with the newly presented Greek data pointing to achievable survival goals in SEE despite the financial crisis. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

- Abstract
Aim: Neuroblastoma outcomes vary with disease characteristics, healthcare delivery and socio-economic indicators. We assessed survival patterns and prognostic factors for patients with neuroblastoma in 11 Southern and Eastern European (SEE) countries versus those in the US, including—for the first time—the Nationwide Registry for Childhood Hematological Malignancies and Solid Tumours (NARECHEM-ST)/Greece. Methods: Overall survival (OS) was calculated in 13 collaborating SEE childhood cancer registries (1829 cases, ∼1990–2016) and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER), US (3072 cases, 1990–2012); Kaplan–Meier curves were used along with multivariable Cox regression models assessing the effect of age, gender, primary tumour site, histology, Human Development Index (HDI) and place of residence (urban/rural) on survival. Results: The 5-year OS rates varied widely among the SEE countries (Ukraine: 45%, Poland: 81%) with the overall SEE rate (59%) being significantly lower than in SEER (77%; p < 0.001). In the common registration period within SEE (2000–2008), no temporal trend was noted as opposed to a significant increase in SEER. Age >12 months (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.8–4.7 in subsequent age groups), male gender (HR: 1.1), residence in rural areas (HR: 1.3), living in high (HR: 2.2) or medium (HR: 2.4) HDI countries and specific primary tumour location were associated with worse outcome; conversely, ganglioneuroblastoma subtype (HR: 0.28) was associated with higher survival rate. Conclusions: Allowing for the disease profile, children with neuroblastoma in SEE, especially those in rural areas and lower HDI countries, fare worse than patients in the US, mainly during the early years after diagnosis; this may be attributed to presumably modifiable socio-economic and healthcare system performance differentials warranting further research. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

- Abstract
Neuroblastoma comprises the most common neoplasm during infancy (first year of life). Our study describes incidence of neuroblastoma in Southern–Eastern Europe (SEE), including – for the first time – the Nationwide Registry for Childhood Hematological Malignancies and Solid Tumors (NARECHEM-ST)/Greece, compared to the US population, while controlling for human development index (HDI). Age-adjusted incidence rates (AIR) were calculated for 1,859 childhood (0–14 years) neuroblastoma cases, retrieved from 13 collaborating SEE registries (1990–2016), and were compared to those of SEER/US (N = 3,166; 1990–2012); temporal trends were assessed using Poisson regression and Joinpoint analyses. The overall AIR was significantly lower in SEE (10.1/million) compared to SEER (11.7 per million); the difference was maximum during infancy (43.7 vs. 53.3 per million, respectively), when approximately one-third of cases were diagnosed. A chromium(I) dinitrogen complex reacts rapidly with O2 to form the mononuclear dioxo complex [Tp(tBu,Me)Cr(V)(O)2] (Tp(tBu,Me) = hydrotris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazolyl)borate), whereas the analogous reaction with sulfur stops at the persulfido complex [Tp(tBu,Me)Cr(III)(S2)]. The transformation of the putative peroxo intermediate [Tp(tBu,Me)Cr(III)(O2)] (S = 3/2) into [Tp(tBu,Me)Cr(V)(O)2] (S = 1/2) is spin-forbidden. The minimum-energy crossing point for the two potential energy surfaces has been identified. Although the dinuclear complex [(Tp(tBu,Me)Cr)2(μ-O)2] exists, mechanistic experiments suggest that O2 activation occurs on a single metal center, by an oxidative addition on the quartet surface followed by crossover to the doublet surface.

Dinitrogen complexes of the type Tp(R,R)Cr-N2-CrTp(R,R) are not the most labile precursors for Cr(i) chemistry, as they are sterically protected from obligatory associative ligand substitution. A mononuclear alkyne complex - Tp(tBu,Me)Cr(η(2)-C2(SiMe3)2) - proved to be much more reactive.

OBJECTIVE: Ovarian cancers comprise several histologically distinct tumour groups with widely different prognosis. We aimed to describe the worldwide distribution of ovarian cancer histology and to understand what role this may play in international variation in survival. METHODS: The CONCORD programme is the largest population-based study of global trends in cancer survival. Data on 681,759 women diagnosed during 1995-2009 with cancer of the ovary, fallopian tube, peritoneum and retroperitonum in 51 countries were included. We categorised ovarian tumours into six histological groups, and explored the worldwide distribution of histology. RESULTS: During 2005-2009, type II epithelial tumours were the most common. CONCLUSIONS: The distribution of ovarian cancer histology varies widely worldwide. Type I epithelial, germ cell and sex cord-stromal tumours are generally associated with higher survival than type II tumours, so the proportion of these tumours may influence survival estimates for all ovarian cancers combined. The distribution of histological groups should be considered when comparing survival between countries and regions.

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd Background: In 2015, the second cycle of the CONCORD programme established global surveillance of cancer survival as a metric of the effectiveness of health systems and to inform global policy on cancer control. CONCORD-3 updates the worldwide surveillance of cancer survival to 2014. Methods: CONCORD-3 includes individual records for 37·5 million patients diagnosed with cancer during the 15-year period 2000–14. Data were provided by 322 population-based cancer registries in 71 countries and territories, 47 of which provided data with 100% population coverage. The study includes 18 cancers or groups of cancers: oesophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, lung, breast (women), cervix, ovary, prostate, and melanoma of the skin in adults, and brain tumours, leukaemias, and lymphomas in both adults and children. Standardised quality control procedures were applied; errors were rectified by the registry concerned. We estimated 5-year net survival. Estimates were age-standardised with the International Cancer Survival Standard weights. Findings: For most cancers, 5-year net survival remains among the highest in the world in the USA and Canada, in Australia and New Zealand, and in Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. For many cancers, Denmark is closing the survival gap with the other Nordic countries. Survival trends are generally increasing, even for some of the more lethal cancers: in some countries, survival has increased by up to 5% for cancers of the liver, pancreas, and lung. For women diagnosed during 2010–14, 5-year survival for breast cancer is now 89·5% in Australia and 90·2% in the USA, but international differences remain very wide, with levels as low as 66·1% in India. For gastrointestinal cancers, the highest levels of 5-year survival are seen in southeast Asia: in South Korea for cancers of the stomach (68·9%), colon (71·8%), and rectum (71·1%); in Japan for oesophageal cancer (36·0%); and in Taiwan for liver cancer (27·9%). We have reported the energies and transition parameters for allowed transition (electric dipole, E1), and forbidden transitions (electric quadrupole, E2, and magnetic dipole, M1) for quadruply ionized radon (Rn V, Z = 86) for energetically low lying levels. The present results were performed using two independent computational strategies of the Hartree-Fock calculation with relativistic corrections and superposition of configurations (Cowan's HFR method) and the general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package based on the fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method. We have compared our results with the results available in the literature to assess the accuracy of the data. We predict that new energy levels and transition parameters, where no other experimental or theoretical results are available, will form the basis for future experimental work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By contrast, in the same world region, survival is generally lower than elsewhere for melanoma of the skin (59·9% in South Korea, 52·1% in Taiwan, and 49·6% in China), and for both lymphoid malignancies (52·5%, 50·5%, and 38·3%) and myeloid malignancies (45·9%, 33·4%, and 24·8%). For children diagnosed during 2010–14, 5-year survival for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia ranged from 49·8% in Ecuador to 95·2% in Finland. 5-year survival from brain tumours in children is higher than for adults but the global range is very wide (from 28·9% in Brazil to nearly 80% in Sweden and Denmark). Interpretation: The CONCORD programme enables timely comparisons of the overall effectiveness of health systems in providing care for 18 cancers that collectively represent 75% of all cancers diagnosed worldwide every year. It contributes to the evidence base for global policy on cancer control. Since 2017, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has used findings from the CONCORD programme as the official benchmark of cancer survival, among their indicators of the quality of health care in 48 countries worldwide. Governments must recognise population-based cancer registries as key policy tools that can be used to evaluate both the impact of cancer prevention strategies and the effectiveness of health systems for all patients diagnosed with cancer. The synthesis of a sterically encumbered β-diketone ligand (Aracac) substituted with 2,6-(2,4,6-Me3C6H2)2C6H3 is described. Coordination complexes of the type M(Aracac)2Cl(solv) (M = Ti, V, Cr; solv = THF, CH3CN) were prepared by the reaction of Aracac with MCl3 (M = V, Cr) or with TiCl4 to generate Ti(Aracac)2Cl2, followed by reduction. These complexes show a trend of alternating the cis/trans geometric preference with increasing dn electron count (n = 0, 1, 2, 3), which is rationalized in part by the unusual ability of β-diketonates to behave as either a weak π donor or a π acceptor in the cis and trans geometries, respectively. In this way, the bis-β-diketonate platform can accommodate the varying electronic demands of the coordinated metal ion. These results demonstrate the ability to limit the coordination of β-diketonates on metal complexes for the first time, providing a chemically robust and coordinatively versatile platform for mechanistic investigations, metal functionalization, and improved cat...

- Abstract
Childhood (0-14 years) lymphomas, nowadays, present a highly curable malignancy compared with other types of cancer. We used readily available cancer registration data to assess mortality and survival disparities among children residing in Southern-Eastern European (SEE) countries and those in the United States. Average age-standardized mortality rates and time trends of Hodgkin (HL) and non-Hodgkin (NHL; including Burkitt [BL]) lymphomas in 14 SEE cancer registries (1990-2014) and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER, United States; 1990-2012) were calculated. Survival patterns in a total of 8918 cases distinguishing also BL were assessed through Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate Cox regression models. Variable, rather decreasing, mortality trends were noted among SEE. Rates were overall higher than that in SEER (1.02/106), which presented a sizeable (−4.8%, P =.0001) annual change. Additionally, remarkable survival improvements were manifested in SEER (10 years: 96%, 86%, and 90% for HL, NHL, and BL, respectively), whereas diverse, still lower, rates were noted in SEE. Non-HL was associated with a poorer outcome and an amphi-directional age-specific pattern; specifically, prognosis was inferior in children younger than 5 years than in those who are 10 to 14 years old from SEE (hazard ratio 1.58, 95% confidence interval 1.28-1.96) and superior in children who are 5 to 9 years old from SEER/United States (hazard ratio 0.63, 95% confidence interval 0.46-0.88) than in those who are 10 to 14 years old. In conclusion, higher SEE lymphoma mortality rates than those in SEER, but overall decreasing trends, were found. Despite significant survival gains among developed countries, there are still substantial geographic, disease subtype-specific, and age-specific outcome disparities pointing to persisting gaps in the implementation of new treatment modalities and indicating further research needs. - Abstract
Pilocytic astrocytomas (PA) comprise the most common childhood central nervous system (CNS) tumor. Exploiting registry-based data from Southern and Eastern Europe (SEE) and SEER, US, we opted to examine incidence, time trends, survival and tentative outcome disparities of childhood PA by sociodemographic and clinical features. Childhood PA were retrieved from 12 SEE registries (N = 552; 1983–2014) and SEER (N = 2723; 1973–2012). Age-standardized incidence rates (ASR) were estimated and survival was examined via Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analysis. ASR of childhood PA during 1990–2012 in SEE was 4.2/106, doubling in the USA (8.2/106). Increasing trends, more prominent during earlier registration years, were recorded in both areas (SEE: +4.1 %, USA: +4.6 %, annually). Cerebellum comprised the most common location, apart from infants in whom supratentorial locations prevailed. Age at diagnosis was 1 year earlier in SEE, whereas 10-year survival was 87 % in SEE and 96 % in SEER, improving over time. Significant outcome predictors were age

Objective Ovarian cancer comprises several histological groups with widely differing levels of survival. We aimed to explore international variation in survival for each group to help interpret international differences in survival from all ovarian cancers combined. We also examined differences in stage-specific survival. Methods The CONCORD programme is the largest population-based study of global trends in cancer survival, including data from 60 countries for 695,932 women (aged 15–99years) diagnosed with ovarian cancer during 1995–2009. We defined six histological groups: type I epithelial, type II epithelial, germ cell, sex cord-stromal, other specific non-epithelial and non-specific morphology, and estimated age-standardised 5-year net survival for each country by histological group. We also analysed data from 67 cancer registries for 233,659 women diagnosed from 2001 to 2009, for whom information on stage at diagnosis was available. We estimated age-standardised 5-year net survival by stage at diagnosis (localised or advanced). Results Survival from type I epithelial ovarian tumours for women diagnosed during 2005–09 ranged from 40 to 70%. Survival from type II epithelial tumours was much lower (20–45%). Survival from germ cell tumours was higher than that of type II epithelial tumours, but also varied widely between countries. Survival for sex-cord stromal tumours was higher than for the five other groups. Survival from localised tumours was much higher than for advanced disease (80% vs. 30%). Conclusions There is wide variation in survival between histological groups, and stage at diagnosis remains an important factor in ovarian cancer survival. International comparisons of ovarian cancer survival should incorporate histology.

- Abstract
Aim To present incidence of central nervous system (CNS) tumours among adolescents and young adults (AYAs; 15–39 years) derived from registries of Southern and Eastern Europe (SEE) in comparison to the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER), US and explore changes due to etiological parameters or registration improvement via evaluating time trends. Methods Diagnoses of 11,438 incident malignant CNS tumours in AYAs (1990–2014) were retrieved from 14 collaborating SEE cancer registries and 13,573 from the publicly available SEER database (1990–2012). Age-adjusted incidence rates (AIRs) were calculated; Poisson and joinpoint regression analyses were performed for temporal trends. Results The overall AIR of malignant CNS tumours among AYAs was higher in SEE (28.1/million) compared to SEER (24.7/million). Astrocytomas comprised almost half of the cases in both regions, albeit the higher proportion of unspecified cases in SEE registries (30% versus 2.5% in SEER). Similar were the age and gender distributions across SEE and SEER with a male-to-female ratio of 1.3 and an overall increase of incidence by age. Increasing temporal trends in incidence were documented in four SEE registries (Greater Poland, Portugal North, Turkey-Izmir and Ukraine) versus an annual decrease in Croatia (−2.5%) and a rather stable rate in SEER (−0.3%). Conclusion This first report on descriptive epidemiology of AYAs malignant CNS tumours in the SEE area shows higher incidence rates as compared to the United States of America and variable temporal trends that may be linked to registration improvements. Hence, it emphasises the need for optimisation of cancer registration processes, as to enable the in-depth evaluation of the observed patterns by disease subtype. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Unique features and worse outcomes have been reported for cancers among adolescents and young adults (AYAs; 15-39 years old). The aim of this study was to explore the mortality and survival patterns of malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumors among AYAs in Southern-Eastern Europe (SEE) in comparison with the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program. METHODS: Malignant CNS tumors diagnosed in AYAs during the period spanning 1990-2014 were retrieved from 14 population-based cancer registries in the SEE region (n = 11,438). Age-adjusted mortality rates were calculated and survival patterns were evaluated via Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses, and they were compared with respective 1990-2012 figures from SEER (n = 13,573). RESULTS: Mortality rates in SEE (range, 11.9-18.5 deaths per million) were higher overall than the SEER rate (9.4 deaths per million), with decreasing trends in both regions. Survival rates increased during a comparable period (2001-2009) in SEE and SEER. The 5-year survival rate was considerably lower in the SEE registries (46%) versus SEER (67%), mainly because of the extremely low rates in Ukraine; this finding was consistent across age groups and diagnostic subtypes. The highest 5-year survival rates were recorded for ependymomas (76% in SEE and 92% in SEER), and the worst were recorded for glioblastomas and anaplastic astrocytomas (28% in SEE and 37% in SEER). Advancing age, male sex, and rural residency at diagnosis adversely affected outcomes in both regions. CONCLUSIONS: Despite definite survival gains over the last years, the considerable outcome disparities between the less affluent SEE region and the United States for AYAs with malignant CNS tumors point to health care delivery inequalities. No considerable prognostic deficits for CNS tumors are evident for AYAs versus children. Cancer 2017;123:4458-71. © 2017 American Cancer Society. © 2017 American Cancer Society

The energies and lifetimes for 5p 6 , 5p 5nf (n = 4-10), 5p 5np (n = 6-10), 5p 5nh (n = 6-10), 5p 5nd (n = 5-10), 5p 5ns (n = 6-10), 5p 5ng (n = 5-10), and 5p 5ni (n = 7-10) configurations and the transition parameters for allowed transition (electric dipole E1), and forbidden transitions (electric quadrupole E2, and magnetic dipole M1) are presented for triply ionized lanthanum (La IV, Z = 57). The present results are obtained from a Hartree-Fock calculation with relativistic corrections and superposition of configurations (Cowan's HFR method) and generalpurpose relativistic atomic structure package based on a fully relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. Comparisons are made with experimental and other available theoretical results to assess the reliability and accuracy of the present calculations. Moreover, some new wavelengths, oscillator strengths and transition probabilities of E1, E2, and M1 transitions have been obtained using these methods. These results are reported for the first time in this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
