Abstract

With the increasing demand for rare earth elements (REEs) in many emerging clean energy technologies, there is an urgent need for the development of new approaches for efficient REE extraction and recovery. As a step toward this goal, we genetically engineered the aerobic bacterium Caulobacter crescentus for REE adsorption through high-density cell surface display of lanthanide binding tags (LBTs) on its S-layer. The LBT-displayed strains exhibited enhanced adsorption of REEs compared to cells lacking LBT, high specificity for REEs, and an adsorption preference for REEs with small atomic radii. Adsorbed Tb(3+) could be effectively recovered using citrate, consistent with thermodynamic speciation calculations that predicted strong complexation of Tb(3+) by citrate. No reduction in Tb(3+) adsorption capacity was observed following citrate elution, enabling consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles. The LBT-displayed strain was effective for extracting REEs from the acid leachate of core samples collected at a prospective rare earth mine. Our collective results demonstrate a rapid, efficient, and reversible process for REE adsorption with potential industrial application for REE enrichment and separation.

Abstract

Increasing rare earth element (REE) supplies by recycling and expanded ore processing will result in generation of new wastewaters. In some cases, disposal to a sewage treatment plant may be favored, but plant performance must be maintained. To assess the potential effects of such wastewaters on biological treatment, model nitrifying organisms Nitrosomonas europaea and Nitrobacter winogradskyi were exposed to simulated wastewaters containing varying levels of yttrium or europium (10, 50, and 100 ppm), and the extractant tributyl phosphate (TBP, at 0.1 g/L). Y and Eu additions at 50 and 100 ppm inhibited N. europaea, even when virtually all of the REE was insoluble. Provision of TBP with Eu increased N. europaea inhibition, although TBP alone did not substantially alter activity. For N. winogradskyi cultures, Eu or Y additions at all tested levels induced significant inhibition, and nitrification shut down completely with TBP addition. REE solubility was calculated using the previously developed MSE (Mixed-Solvent Electrolyte) thermodynamic model. The model calculations reveal a strong pH dependence of solubility, typically controlled by the precipitation of REE hydroxides but also likely affected by the formation of unknown phosphate phases, which determined aqueous concentrations experienced by the microorganisms.

41. Kinetic Study of Gas Hydrate Formation in an R410a + CaCl2Aqueous Solution System in the Presence or Absence of Cyclopentane: Application to Hydrate-Based Desalination

Abstract

Hydrate-based desalination is a cost-effective novel technique to produce fresh water. However, the main bottleneck of such a process is the relatively low kinetics of hydrate formation in the presence of multiple salts in the saline water stream. In this work, kinetics of an R410a refrigerant (0.5 mass fraction difluoromethane + 0.5 mass fraction 1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoroethane) hydrate in the presence of various concentrations of CaCl2are investigated. Furthermore, the effect of cyclopentane addition to the system on the corresponding hydrate formation kinetics is studied. The experimental results show that lower concentrations of CaCl2(1 and 2 wt %) had no significant effect on hydrate formation induction time and its semicompletion time; meanwhile, a higher CaCl2concentration of 4 wt % leads to a decline in the corresponding kinetic parameters. Moreover, gas consumption is also reduced in the presence of a higher concentration of CaCl2. It is further demonstrated that the presence of cyclopentane at 0.5 mol % could increase water to hydrate conversion required to improve the kinetics of hydrate formation for the system of interest.

Abstract

Removal of pollutants from petrochemical effluents is vital in terms of effluent control and achieving environmental standards. Because of the nature of particular effluents in petrochemical industry, direct biological treatment is not recommended. Therefore, novel techniques such as advanced oxidation processes through photocatalytic processes have been proposed for this purpose. In this study, synthetic photocatalyst TiO2-CTAB (cetyletrimethylammonium bromide) was used for treatment of a real spent-neutral effluent from a neutralization section of the olefin unit of a petrochemical plant. In order to study the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the process, a double-walled photoreactor was utilized pursuing the Box-Behnken experiment design method. The results show that increasing the concentration of photocatalyst at neutral pH, up to an optimal value of 0.61 g/L in unrestricted conditions and 2 g/L in restricted conditions enhances COD removal by 91.3% and 90.7%, respectively. Furthermore, the effects of oxidation parameters, aeration rate, pH and the amount of catalyst loaded on COD removal efficiency were investigated. It is interpreted from the results that when the oxidant is at its lowest level, removal efficiency is reduced with increasing pH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

46. Phase Equilibria of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) Nanoparticles and Tetrahydrofuran (THF) in CO2Hydrate Systems: Individual and Combined Analyses

Abstract

This study presents an investigation into the phase equilibria of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas hydrates in the presence of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and their combination. An isochoric Pressure search method to measure these equilibria was employed for the experimental procedure. The phase equilibrium results have been shown for ZnO quantities of 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 g and THF mass fractions of 0.01, 4, and 16 in aqueous solutions. These measurements were conducted within temperature and pressure ranges of 275.15 to 295.15 K and 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 MPa, respectively. The results indicated that ZnO nanoparticles demonstrated a minor thermodynamic inhibition effect on the formation of hydrates. In contrast, the outcomes revealed that the presence of THF in the system causes changes in the equilibrium conditions of the hydrate phase, resulting in higher temperatures and reduced pressures, as anticipated. Furthermore, using THF with a mass fraction of 16 showed the most significant improvement effect. In addition, experiments were conducted for mixtures of zinc oxide nanoparticles at a concentration of 0.02 g and tetrahydrofuran with a 16% mass fraction. The results indicated a significant increase in temperature compared to the pure water system under these conditions, demonstrating a positive influence of the mentioned mixture on hydrate phase equilibrium conditions.

Abstract

In this paper, the effect of adding different concentrations of kinetic inhibitors on the induction time of hydrogen sulfide hydrate formation in a reactor equipped with automatic adjustable temperature controller is studied. A novel method namely "sudden cooling" is used for performing the relevant measurements, in which the induction time of H2S hydrate in the presence/absence of PVP and L-tyrosine with different concentrations (100, 500, and 1000 ppm) is determined. As a result, PVP with the concentration of 1000 ppm in aqueous solution is detected as a more suitable material for increasing the induction time of H2S hydrate formation among the investigated kinetic hydrate inhibitors.

CO2 capture has become an important area of research mainly due to its drastic green-house effects. Gas hydrate formation as a separation technique shows tremendous potential, both from a physical feasibility as well as an envisaged lower energy utilization criterion. Briefly, gas (clathrate) hydrates are non-stoichiometric, ice-like crystalline compounds formed through a combination of water and suitably sized guest molecule(s) under low-temperatures and elevated pressures. As the pressure required for gas hydrate formation is generally high, therefore, aqueous solution of tetra-n-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) is added to the system as a gas hydrate promoter. TBAB generally reduces the required hydrate formation pressure and/or increases the formation temperature as well as modifies the selectivity of hydrate cages to capture CO2 molecules. TBAB also takes part in the hydrogen-bonded cages. Such hydrates are called "semi-clathrate" hydrates. Evidently, reliable and accurate phase equilibrium data, acceptable thermodynamic models, and other thermodynamic studies should be provided to design efficient separation processes using the aforementioned technology. For this purpose, phase equilibria of clathrate/semi-clathrate hydrates of various gas mixtures containing CO2 (CO2 + CH4/N2/H2) in the presence of pure water and aqueous solutions of TBAB have been measured in this thesis. In the theoretical section of the thesis, a thermodynamic model on the basis of the van der Waals and Platteeuw (vdW-P) solid solution theory along with the modified equations for determination of the Langmuir constants of the hydrate formers has been successfully developed to represent/predict equilibrium conditions of semi-clathrate hydrates of CO2, CH4, and N2. Later, several thermodynamic consistency tests on the basis of Gibbs-Duhem equation as well as a statistical approach have been applied on the phase equilibrium data of the systems of mixed/simple clathrate hydrates to conclude about their quality.; Capturer le CO2 est devenu un domaine de recherche important en raison principalement des forts effets de serre dont il est jugé responsable. La formation d'hydrate de gaz comme technique de séparation montre un potentiel considérable, d'une part pour sa faisabilité physique et d'autre part pour une consommation énergétique réduite. En bref, les hydrates de gaz (clathrates) sont des composés ″cages″ non-stoechiométriques, cristallins comme la glace et formés par une combinaison de molécules d'eau et de molécules hôtes convenables, à basses températures et pressions élevées.
