Regenerative medicine (RM) has emerged as a promising and revolutionary solution to address a range of unmet needs in healthcare, including ophthalmology. Moreover, RM takes advantage of the body’s innate ability to repair and replace pathologically affected tissues. On the other hand, despite its immense promise, RM faces challenges such as ethical concerns, host-related immune responses, and the need for additional scientific validation, among others. The primary aim of this review is to present a high-level overview of current strategies in the domain of RM (cell therapy, exosomes, scaffolds, in vivo reprogramming, organoids, and interspecies chimerism), centering around the field of ophthalmology. A search conducted on clinicaltrials.gov unveiled a total of at least 209 interventional trials related to RM within the ophthalmological field. Among these trials, there were numerous early-phase studies, including phase I, I/II, II, II/III, and III trials. Many of these studies demonstrate potential in addressing previously challenging and degenerative eye conditions, spanning from posterior segment pathologies like Age-related Macular Degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa to anterior structure diseases such as Dry Eye Disease and Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency. Notably, these therapeutic approaches offer tailored solutions specific to the underlying causes of each pathology, thus allowing for the hopeful possibility of bringing forth a treatment for ocular diseases that previously seemed incurable and significantly enhancing patients’ quality of life. As advancements in research and technology continue to unfold, future objectives should focus on ensuring the safety and prolonged viability of transplanted cells, devising efficient delivery techniques, etc.

Background: Fluid regimens in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are conflicting. The amount of fluid and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) level may interact leading to ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI). We therefore evaluated restrictive and liberal fluid strategies associated with low and high PEEP levels with regard to lung and kidney damage, as well as cardiorespiratory function in endotoxin-induced ARDS.Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats received an intratracheal instillation of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide. After 24 h, the animals were anesthetized, protectively ventilated (VT = 6 ml/kg), and randomized to restrictive (5 ml/kg/h) or liberal (40 ml/kg/h) fluid strategies (Ringer lactate). Both groups were then ventilated with PEEP = 3 cmH2O (PEEP3) and PEEP = 9 cmH2O (PEEP9) for 1 h (n = 6/group). Echocardiography, arterial blood gases, and lung mechanics were evaluated throughout the experiments. Histologic analyses were done on the lungs, and molecular biology was assessed in lungs and kidneys using six non-ventilated animals with no fluid therapy.Results: In lungs, the liberal group showed increased transpulmonary plateau pressure compared with the restrictive group (liberal, 23.5 ± 2.9 cmH2O; restrictive, 18.8 ± 2.3 cmH2O, p = 0.046) under PEEP = 9 cmH2O. Gene expression associated with inflammation (interleukin [IL]-6) was higher in the liberal-PEEP9 group than the liberal-PEEP3 group (p = 0.006) and restrictive-PEEP9 (p = 0.012), Regardless of the fluid strategy, lung mechanical power and the heterogeneity index were higher, whereas birefringence for claudin-4 and zonula-ocludens-1 gene expression were lower in the PEEP9 groups. Perivascular edema was higher in liberal groups, regardless of PEEP levels. Markers related to damage to epithelial cells [club cell secreted protein (CC16)] and the extracellular matrix (syndecan) were higher in the liberal-PEEP9 group than the liberal-PEEP3 group (p = 0.010 and p = 0.024, respectively). In kidneys, the expression of IL-6 and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin was higher in PEEP9 groups, regardless of the fluid strategy. For the liberal strategy, PEEP = 9 cmH2O compared with PEEP = 3 cmH2O reduced the right ventricle systolic volume (37%) and inferior vena cava collapsibility index (45%).Conclusion: The combination of a liberal fluid strategy and high PEEP led to more lung damage. The application of high PEEP, regardless of the fluid strategy, may also be deleterious to kidneys.

Abstract Background Type V collagen (Col V) has the potential to become an autoantigen and has been associated with the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis (SSc). We characterized serological, functional, and histopathological features of the skin and lung in a novel SSc murine model induced by Col V immunization. Methods Female C57BL/6 mice (n = 19, IMU-COLV) were subcutaneously immunized with two doses of Col V (125 μg) emulsified in complete Freund adjuvant, followed by two intramuscular boosters. The control group (n = 19) did not receive Col V. After 120 days, we examined the respiratory mechanics, serum autoantibodies, and vascular manifestations of the mice. The skin and lung inflammatory processes and the collagen gene/protein expressions were analyzed. Results Vascular manifestations were characterized by endothelial cell activity and apoptosis, as shown by the increased expression of VEGF, endothelin-1, and caspase-3 in endothelial cells. The IMU-COLV mice presented with increased tissue elastance and a nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) histologic pattern in the lung, combined with the thickening of the small and medium intrapulmonary arteries, increased Col V fibers, and increased COL1A1, COL1A2, COL3A1, COL5A1, and COL5A2 gene expression. The skin of the IMU-COLV mice showed thickness, epidermal rectification, decreased papillary dermis, atrophied appendages, and increased collagen, COL5A1, and COL5A2 gene expression. Anti-collagen III and IV and ANA antibodies were detected in the sera of the IMU-COLV mice. Conclusion We demonstrated that cutaneous, vascular, and pulmonary remodeling are mimicked in the Col V-induced SSc mouse model, which thus represents a suitable preclinical model to study the mechanisms and therapeutic approaches for SSc.

The enduring existence of disproportionate representation of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in special education programs and disciplinary practices creates a double bind for educators, educational leaders, and families. Disproportionality is an adaptive systemic issue that is not under any entity's control; thus, it demands collaboration and critical dialogue among local stakeholders. This article examined the implementation of Learning Lab, a new methodology of systemic transformation, for local stakeholders to collectively examine and address disproportionality in behavioral outcomes from the ground-up. Learning Lab aims to increase equity within the local implementations of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) by opening up decision-making and problem-solving processes with local stakeholders. Designed to increase authentic collaboration and dialogue among educators, families, and community-based organizations, Learning Lab offers the possibility of contextually fit, culturally responsive implementations of PBIS and building the capacity for forming adaptive and inclusive schools.

Objectives: To determine the associated pathogen during the 2023 conjunctivitis outbreak in Vietnam Methods: RNA-sequencing was used to identify pathogens before and during the outbreak. Results: 24 patients with infectious conjunctivitis between March and October 2023 from Hai Yen Vision Institute in Vietnam were swabbed. Coxsackievirus A24v was the most common pathogen identified. Phylogenetic analysis of these strains demonstrates similarities to the Coxsackievirus identified in the 2022 India outbreak. Human adenovirus D was also circulating. Ocular findings of tearing, purulence, and itching were common in this outbreak. Conclusions: Multiple viruses can co-circulate during conjunctivitis outbreaks. Hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, commonly associated with coxsackievirus conjunctivitis, was not a common clinical sign in this outbreak. Repeat genetic surveillance, with the notable inclusion of RNA virus detection strategies, is important for outbreak detection.

Abstract Background Mucopolysaccharidosis VII (MPS VII) is an ultra-rare, autosomal recessive, debilitating, progressive lysosomal storage disease caused by reduced activity of β-glucuronidase (GUS) enzyme. Vestronidase alfa (recombinant human GUS) intravenous enzyme replacement therapy is an approved treatment for patients with MPS VII. Methods This disease monitoring program (DMP) is an ongoing, multicenter observational study collecting standardized real-world data from patients with MPS VII (N ≈ 50 planned) treated with vestronidase alfa or any other management approach. Data are monitored and recorded in compliance with Good Clinical Practice guidelines and planned interim analyses of captured data are performed annually. Here we summarize the safety and efficacy outcomes as of 17 November 2022. Results As of the data cutoff date, 35 patients were enrolled: 28 in the Treated Group and seven in the Untreated Group. Mean (SD) age at MPS VII diagnosis was 4.5 (4.0) years (range, 0.0 to 12.4 years), and mean (SD) age at DMP enrollment was 13.9 (11.1) years (range, 1.5 to 50.2 years). Ten patients (29%) had a history of nonimmune hydrops fetalis. In the 23 patients who initiated treatment prior to DMP enrollment, substantial changes in mean excretion from initial baseline to DMP enrollment were observed for the three urinary glycosaminoglycans (uGAGs): dermatan sulfate (DS), -84%; chondroitin sulfate (CS), -55%; heparan sulfate (HS), -42%. Also in this group, mean reduction from initial baseline to months 6, 12, and 24 were maintained for uGAG DS (-84%, -87%, -89%, respectively), CS (-70%, -71%, -76%, respectively), and HS (+ 3%, -32%, and − 41%, respectively). All adverse events (AEs) were consistent with the known vestronidase alfa safety profile. No patients discontinued vestronidase alfa. One patient died. Conclusions To date, the DMP has collected invaluable MPS VII disease characteristic data. The benefit-risk profile of vestronidase alfa remains unchanged and favorable for its use in the treatment of pediatric and adult patients with MPS VII. Reductions in DS and CS uGAG demonstrate effectiveness of vestronidase alfa to Month 24. Enrollment is ongoing.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has categorised snake-related injuries as a neglected tropical disease which can cause permanent disability, or worse, can lead to death if not treated timely and appropriately. Medical students are exposed to snakebite patients predominantly in their clinical years and depending on the location of their medical postings. This study aimed to determine the perceived awareness, knowledge and confidence level of medical students in providing information and managing snake-related injuries. A quantitative cross-sectional study was designed and the data were collected using a Likert scale questionnaire. The perceived awareness, knowledge and confidence level between pre-clinical and clinical students were tested by an independent sample t-test. A p-value of ≤ .05 was interpreted as statistically significant. Analysis revealed a statistically significant difference of perceived knowledge (p= .009) and perception of confidence level (p= .025) between clinical and pre-clinical students. However, no difference was found in terms of perceived awareness (p> .05). Clinical medical students have a better perception of knowledge and confidence level in providing information and managing snake-related injuries than pre-clinical students. An indepth study on this topic should be conducted to include all medical students in Malaysia. Steps should be taken to improve the knowledge and confidence level of medical students in managing snake-related injuries in Malaysia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IntroductionResearch on children's media use has disproportionately focused on maternal reports of use. As such, we know little about how mothers' and fathers' reports of children's media use align, how such reports might be related to parental beliefs about the benefits of media for children, or the potential differential impact of child characteristics, such as temperament and gender.MethodUsing a sample of 210 low-to-moderate income, racially and ethnically diverse families, we asked new mothers and fathers about their child's media use and limits at 9, 18 and 24 months of age.ResultsOn average, reports of co-use of media, children's use of media alone, exposure to background television, diversity of daily media use, and use of media for behavior management did not significantly differ between mothers and fathers and were moderately correlated, r(df) = 0.2–0.7. However, comparisons within dyads found that parents did not often agree on their child's media use. Couples also tended to report different limitations on use, with fathers reporting much larger time limits. For both mothers and fathers, stronger beliefs in the benefits of media when children were infants were predictive of more reported media use at 24 months. Infant negative emotionality was predictive of the use of media for behavior management for both mothers and fathers, and for other types of media use for fathers.ConclusionParents of the same child reported media use over the first two years differently, which may indicate informant effects in media research or actual differences in young children's media use with each parent. Given the risks of media use in early childhood to displace important developmental processes, understanding young children's media use within the family system is important.

Abstract INTRODUCTION We aimed to determine the effect of years of schooling (YoS) and age on the Mexican adaptation of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD‐MX) scores in preclinical carriers group (PCG) and non‐carriers group (NCG) of the APPV717I mutation. METHODS We included 39 first‐degree Mexican relatives of APPV717I carriers (PCG = 15; NCG = 24). We report eight CERAD‐MX tasks: Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE), Word List Learning (WLL), Delayed Recall (WLD) and Recognition (WLR), Constructional Praxis Copy (CPC) and Recall (CPR), Semantic Verbal Fluency (SVF), and Verbal Boston Naming (VBN), comparing both groups’ performance and simulating new samples’ random vectors by inverse transform sampling. RESULTS PCG and NCG performed similarly on CERAD‐MX. In both groups, YoS and age influence all z scores. A positive age effect resulted for PCG on CPC and SVF; for the NCG on MMSE, SVF, and VBN. DISCUSSION All tasks are influenced by YoS. Higher YoS/younger age or YoS/older age interactions affected different tasks, suggesting that YoS confounds outcomes. Highlights Years of schooling (YoS) and age affect the Mexican adaptation of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease scores of APPV717I preclinical carriers. Preclinical carriers underperformed non‐carriers on Constructional Praxis Recall. Fewer YoS emerges as a confounding variable when detecting cognitive failures. Younger participants in both groups overperformed the older ones in the Memory tasks. Randomized data simulation increases statistical power when analyzing rare diseases.

Introducción: En el trasplante renal de donante vivo, la percepción de la situación de enfermedad y la vivencia personal influyen de forma significativa en la adaptación emocional y el afrontamiento de la persona. Objetivo: Conocer el significado que atribuyen las personas con trasplante renal de donante vivo a su enfermedad y a su tratamiento, y detectar si existen cambios antes y después trasplante. Material y Método: Estudio cualitativo fenomenológico. Participaron 7 personas con enfermedad renal que recibieron un trasplante renal de donante vivo preventivo. Se obtuvieron los datos mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas y observación cualitativa. Resultados: Del análisis temático de las entrevistas emergieron tres temas: sin sentimiento de enfermedad (no se sentían enfermos ni a nivel físico ni psicológico); sin necesidad de trasplantarse (la enfermedad no les alteró su vida, pero confiaron en los profesionales y aceptaron la cirugía); y trasplantarse para mantener el mismo modo de vida (para evitar la diálisis y recuperar actividades). Conclusiones: El significado de la enfermedad y del trasplante renal cambian según la etapa (pre o post trasplante) en la que esté el paciente: la identificación de la enfermedad está relacionada con la presencia de sintomatología, con la sintomatología física y con las rutinas de toma de medicación diarias y visitas de seguimiento; y el trasplante renal, significa evitar la diálisis, hacer la misma vida, superar un reto y recuperar la condición física.

Several differentiation protocols have enabled the generation of intermediate mesoderm (IM)-derived cells from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC). However, the substantial variability between existing protocols for generating IM cells compromises their efficiency, reproducibility, and overall success, potentially hindering the utility of urogenital system organoids. Here, we examined the role of high levels of Nodal signaling and BMP activity, as well as WNT signaling in the specification of IM cells derived from a UCSD167i-99-1 human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) line. We demonstrate that precise modulation of WNT and BMP signaling significantly enhances IM differentiation efficiency. Treatment of hPSC with 3 μM CHIR99021 induced TBXT+/MIXL1+ mesoderm progenitor (MP) cells after 48 h of differentiation. Further treatment with a combination of 3 μM CHIR99021 and 4 ng/mL BMP4 resulted in the generation of OSR1+/GATA3+/PAX2+ IM cells within a subsequent 48 h period. Molecular characterization of differentiated cells was confirmed through immunofluorescence staining and RT-qPCR. Hence, this study establishes a consistent and reproducible protocol for differentiating hiPSC into IM cells that faithfully recapitulates the molecular signatures of IM development. This protocol holds promise for improving the success of protocols designed to generate urogenital system organoids in vitro, with potential applications in regenerative medicine, drug discovery, and disease modeling.

This pilot study focuses on particulate matter (PM) while cooking in a South Texan household. Dishes such as Beef, Burger, Fish, Chicken, Egg Sandwich, and Hotdog were prepared. Indoor PM levels were compared with outdoor PM levels. A DustTrak DRX was used to monitor the PM released during the cooking process. PM2.5 levels were highest while cooking beef, 162.79 + 209.62 μg m−3. Hot Dog preparation resulted in the lowest PM2.5 concentration of 27.72 + 5.58 μg m−3. Indoor PM2.5 levels were observed to be greater in contrast to outdoor levels when compared to the outdoor levels (96 words).

Abstract Background Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most incident types of cancer among women in the world. Although chemotherapy is an effective way to treat several types of cancer, it may also cause serious complications, including cardiotoxicity. This study aimed to identify the impact of chemotherapy on functional capacity, muscle strength and autonomic function. Methods Ten breast cancer patients in therapeutic follow-up (TG) and ten women without comorbidities (CG) participated in the study (46±8.87 years old). Both groups were evaluated at two time points, before and 20 weeks after the start of chemotherapy. Functional capacity and muscle strength were assessed by 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and handgrip test, respectively. Autonomic function was assessed by heart rate variability analysis. Results TG presented greater reductions in the handgrip test for the non-dominant hand (TG ↓15.2%; CG: ↑1.1%, p0.05) and 6MWT total distance (p>0.05). Regarding the heart rate variability variables before and after follow-up period, rMSSD (CG= 39.15±37.66; TG= 14.89±8.28, p= 0.01) and SDNN (CG= 55.77±40.03; TG= 26.30±10.37, p= 0.02) showed effect in the group and time interaction, whereas the LF/HF ratio presented significant difference only in the time analysis (CG= 2.24±2.30; TG= 2.84±1.82, p= 0.04). Conclusion Chemotherapy used in the treatment of breast cancer patients resulted in decreased muscle strength and autonomic imbalance. The data suggests that chemotherapy may carry the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Trial registration Registration not required.

Background: Leigh syndrome spectrum (LSS) is a novel nomenclature that encompasses both classical Leigh syndrome and Leigh-like phenotypes. Given the heterogeneity of disease presentation, a new consensus published recently addressed the main issues and proposed general guidelines towards diagnosis. Based on these recommendations, we developed a simple pipeline that can be useful in the diagnosis of LSS. Methods: We combined previously published criteria with our own experience to achieve a diagnostic framework that can provide faster satisfactory results with fewer resources. Results: We suggest adding basic biochemical tests for amino acids, acylcarnitine, and urinary organic acids as parallel investigations, as these results can be obtained in a short time. This approach characterized 80% of our cohort and promoted specific intervention in 10% of confirmed cases. Conclusions: Genetic studies are crucial in the diagnosis of LSS, but they are time-consuming and might delay tailored interventions. Therefore, we suggest adding more affordable and less complex biochemical studies as primary tests when investigating treatable causes of LSS.

BiOI and (3 wt%)GO/BiOI visible-light-driven photocatalysts were obtained by a one-pot solvothermal method and successfully applied to the degradation of single and binary dye solutions of rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) and H2 production using very low-power sources. The GO/BiOI with hierarchical flower morphologies exhibited the highest activity, achieving RhB and MB photodegradation percentages (%Xdye) of 100% and 80%, respectively, in 240 min employing a simple 19 W white LED array. Furthermore, GO/BiOI dosage and RhB initial concentration play an essential role in dye degradation, and scavenger assays confirmed that holes and superoxides are the main species causing RhB oxidation. TOC analysis determined an efficiency of 70%, and after three uses, the GO/BiOI attained a %XRhB of 84%. The H2 evolution was performed under 2 W UV light, yielding 323.25 μmol/h∙g of H2 for BiOI, and the addition of GO nanosheets increased the photoactivity of GO/BiOI up to 63% (509.61 μmol/h∙g). The catalytic activity of GO/BiOI is superior to values reported in the literature considering nominal power consumption (kWh) vs. efficiency of RhB degradation or H2 production.

Abstract Background Although many molecules have been investigated as biomarkers for spinal cord injury (SCI) or ischemic stroke, none of them are specifically induced in central nervous system (CNS) neurons following injuries with low baseline expression. However, neuronal injury constitutes a major pathology associated with SCI or stroke and strongly correlates with neurological outcomes. Biomarkers characterized by low baseline expression and specific induction in neurons post‐injury are likely to better correlate with injury severity and recovery, demonstrating higher sensitivity and specificity for CNS injuries compared to non‐neuronal markers or pan‐neuronal markers with constitutive expressions. Methods In animal studies, young adult wildtype and global Atf3 knockout mice underwent unilateral cervical 5 (C5) SCI or permanent distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO). Gene expression was assessed using RNA‐sequencing and qRT‐PCR, while protein expression was detected through immunostaining. Serum ATF3 levels in animal models and clinical human samples were measured using commercially available enzyme‐linked immune‐sorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Results Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3), a molecular marker for injured dorsal root ganglion sensory neurons in the peripheral nervous system, was not expressed in spinal cord or cortex of naïve mice but was induced specifically in neurons of the spinal cord or cortex within 1 day after SCI or ischemic stroke, respectively. Additionally, ATF3 protein levels in mouse blood significantly increased 1 day after SCI or ischemic stroke. Importantly, ATF3 protein levels in human serum were elevated in clinical patients within 24 hours after SCI or ischemic stroke. Moreover, Atf3 knockout mice, compared to the wildtype mice, exhibited worse neurological outcomes and larger damage regions after SCI or ischemic stroke, indicating that ATF3 has a neuroprotective function. Conclusions ATF3 is an easily measurable, neuron‐specific biomarker for clinical SCI and ischemic stroke, with neuroprotective properties. Highlights ATF3 was induced specifically in neurons of the spinal cord or cortex within 1 day after SCI or ischemic stroke, respectively. Serum ATF3 protein levels are elevated in clinical patients within 24 hours after SCI or ischemic stroke. ATF3 exhibits neuroprotective properties, as evidenced by the worse neurological outcomes and larger damage regions observed in Atf3 knockout mice compared to wildtype mice following SCI or ischemic stroke.

The elements of the bidiagonal decomposition (BD) of a totally positive (TP) collocation matrix can be expressed in terms of symmetric functions of the nodes. Making use of this result, and studying the relation between Wronskian and collocation matrices of a given TP basis of functions, we can express the entries of the BD of Wronskian matrices as the values of certain symmetric functions evaluated at a single node. Moreover, in the case of polynomial bases, we obtain compact formulae for the entries of the BD of their Wronskian matrices. Interesting examples illustrate the applications of the obtained formulae.

Cajuína is a processed drink derived from cashew and is widely consumed in the northeast region of Brazil. This study evaluated the effect of a cajuína-based hydroelectrolytic drink on the aerobic performance and hydration status of recreational runners. Seventeen males (31.9 ± 1.6 years, 51.0 ± 1.4 ml/kg/min) performed three time-to-exhaustion running sessions on a treadmill at 70% VO2max, ingesting cajuína hydroelectrolytic drink (CJ), high carbohydrate commercial hydroelectrolytic drink (CH) and mineral water (W) every 15 min during the running test. The participants ran 80.3 ± 8.4 min in CJ, 70.3 ± 6.8 min in CH and 71.8 ± 6.9 min in W, with no statistical difference between procedures. Nevertheless, an effect size of η2 = 0.10 (moderate) was observed. No statistical difference was observed in the concentrations of sodium, potassium, and osmolality in both serum and urine between the three conditions. However, the effect size was moderate (urine sodium) and high (serum sodium, potassium, and osmolality). Urine specific gravity, sweating rate and heart rate were not significantly different between drinks. The cajuína-based hydroelectrolytic drink promotes similar effects compared to commercial hydroelectrolytic drink and water, considering specific urine gravity, heart rate, sweating, and time to exhaustion in recreational runners.

ACS 2023 & ACTES 2023 gather experts, scholars, practitioners, and enthusiasts from the field of surgery, both in traumatic and non-traumatic areas, in the vibrant city of Tirana. The comprehensive program encompasses a diverse range of surgical topics, from abdominal and chest injuries to vascular injuries, emergency surgery, and the challenge of nurse services in the new millennium. The theme of this year's events, "Surgery and not only...," reflects the commitment to innovation, best practices, and groundbreaking discoveries. Agricultural stubble burning is the third largest source of air pollution after vehicular and industrial emissions. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and black carbon (BC) are some of the pollutants emitted during such burning events. The Lower Rio Grande Valley (RGV) region of South Texas is a major hub of agricultural activity, and sugarcane farming is one of them. Unfortunately, this activity results in episodic events of high air pollution in this low-resourced, Hispanic/Latino majority region of the U.S.–Mexico border. This study presents results from a sugarcane site in La Feria, South Texas, where the air quality was monitored before, during, and after the sugarcane stubble burning. Various parameters were monitored on an hourly basis from 24 February 2022 to 4 April 2022. Our results demonstrate high levels of all the monitored pollutants during the burning phase in contrast to the pre- and post-burning period. The black carbon levels went up to 6.43 µg m−3 on the day of burning activity. An increase of 10%, 11.6%, 25.29%, 55%, and 67.57% was recorded in the PM1, PM2.5, PM10, Black Carbon, and CO levels, respectively, during the burning period in comparison with the total study period. The absorption Ångström exponent value reached a maximum value of 2.03 during the burning activity. ThePM2.5/PM10 ratio was 0.87 during the burning activity. This study also highlights the importance for continuous monitoring of air quality levels due to stubble burning in the Lower Rio Grande Valley Region of South Texas.

With advances in technological sciences, individuals can utilize low-cost air monitoring sensors to record air quality at homes, schools, and businesses. Air quality data collected from LCSs are publicly accessible, informing the community of the air quality around them. It is important to measure local and regional particulate matter (PM) concentrations to keep the public involved, especially those with specific health concerns, such as asthma, wheezing, and seasonal allergies. The number of studies involving the use of LCSs to evaluate PM levels is increasing with more manufacturers producing ‘easy to use’ LCSs targeting the public. The goal of this review is to understand and incorporate the findings from studies using LCSs to analyze PM of various sizes, i.e., PM1, PM2.5, PM4, and PM10. This review integrates analyses from 51 different studies in 14 countries, including the U.S. The findings indicate spatial heterogeneity in the PM concentrations across a region. Some of the low-cost sensor manufacturers mentioned in these studies include Plantower, AQMesh, Alpha-sense, PurpleAir, E-MOTEs, and Shinyei. This review emphasizes the importance of LCSs in the field of PM monitoring and its potential to inform the public about their exposure burden, and to aid state and federal decision makers in formulating policies for mitigating the effects of PM pollution in any urban or rural setting.

The mathematical study known as queueing theory has recently become a major point of interest for many government agencies and private companies for increasing efficiency. One such application is vehicle queueing at an international port-of-entry (POE). When queueing, fumes from idling vehicles negatively affect the overall health and well-being of the community, especially the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents that work at the POEs. As such, there is a need to analyze and optimize the border crossing queuing operations to minimize wait times and number of vehicles in the queue and, thus, reduce the vehicle emissions. For this research, the U.S.–Mexico POE located at The Gateway International Bridge in Brownsville, Texas, is used as a case study. Due to data privacy concerns, the hourly wait times for vehicles arriving at the border had to be extracted manually each day using a live wait time tracker online. The data extraction was performed for the month of March 2022. Using these wait times, a queueing simulation software, SIMIO, was used to develop an interactive simulation model and calibrate the service rates. The output from the SIMIO model was then used to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict hourly particulate matter content with an R2 of 0.402. From the ANN, a predictive equation has been developed, which may be used by CBP to make operational decisions and improve the overall efficiency of this POE. Thus, lowering the average wait times and the emissions from idling vehicles in the queue.

Autonomous mobile robots are essential to the industry, and human–robot interactions are becoming more common nowadays. These interactions require that the robots navigate scenarios with static and dynamic obstacles in a safely manner, avoiding collisions. This paper presents a physical implementation of a method for dynamic obstacle avoidance using a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network that obtains information from the mobile robot’s LiDAR for it to be capable of navigating through scenarios with static and dynamic obstacles while avoiding collisions and reaching its goal. The model is implemented using a TurtleBot3 mobile robot within an OptiTrack motion capture (MoCap) system for obtaining its position at any given time. The user operates the robot through these scenarios, recording its LiDAR readings, target point, position inside the MoCap system, and its linear and angular velocities, all of which serve as the input for the LSTM network. The model is trained on data from multiple user-operated trajectories across five different scenarios, outputting the linear and angular velocities for the mobile robot. Physical experiments prove that the model is successful in allowing the mobile robot to reach the target point in each scenario while avoiding the dynamic obstacle, with a validation accuracy of 98.02%.

Extensions of Filbert and Lilbert matrices are addressed in this work. They are reciprocal Hankel matrices based on Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, respectively, and both are related to Hilbert matrices. The Neville elimination is applied to provide explicit expressions for their bidiagonal factorization. As a byproduct, formulae for the determinants of these matrices are obtained. Finally, numerical experiments show that several algebraic problems involving these matrices can be solved with outstanding accuracy, in contrast with traditional approaches.

The selection of appropriate probiotic strains is vital for their successful inclusion in foods. These strains must withstand processing to reach consumers with ≥106 CFU/g, ensuring effective probiotic function. Achieving this in commercial products is challenging due to sensitivity to temperature during processing. In this work, Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 was microencapsulated by ionic gelation (with alginate or pectin) followed by polymeric coating (with whey protein concentrate or chitosan). Then, such microcapsules were incorporated into a strawberry puree, which was subsequently dehydrated at three temperatures (40 °C, 45 °C, and 50 °C) by Refractance Window®. The ultimate aim was to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methods from a technological point of view. Kinetic curves of the probiotic’s viability showed a high cell loading (>109 CFU/g). Additionally, an average encapsulation efficiency of 91% and a particle size of roughly 200 µm were found. A decrease in the viability of the microorganism was observed as drying temperature and time increased. As a demonstration of the above, in a particular case, drying at 45 °C and 50 °C, viable cells were found up to 165 min and 90 min, respectively; meanwhile, drying at 40 °C, viable cells were reported even after 240 min. The greatest viability preservation was achieved with Refractance Window® drying at 40 °C for 240 min when microcapsules coated with whey protein concentrate were incorporated into puree; this procedure showed great potential to produce dehydrated strawberry snacks with moisture (15%), water activity (aw < 0.6), and viability (≥106 CFU/g) suitable for functional foods. The membrane-stabilizing properties of whey protein concentrate could prevent cell damage. In contrast, probiotics in chitosan-coated capsules showed reduced viability, potentially due to antimicrobial properties and the formation of cracks. These findings signify a breakthrough in the production of dehydrated snacks with the addition of probiotics, addressing challenges in preserving the viability of these probiotics during processing; thus, opening the possibility for the development of a probiotic strawberry snack.

Among the many lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) that would benefit from the establishment of novel cell models, either patient-derived or genetically engineered, is mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II). Here, we present our results on the establishment and characterization of two MPS II patient-derived stem cell line(s) from deciduous baby teeth. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a stem cell population has been isolated from LSD patient samples obtained from the dental pulp. Taking into account our results on the molecular and biochemical characterization of those cells and the fact that they exhibit visible and measurable disease phenotypes, we consider these cells may qualify as a valuable disease model, which may be useful for both pathophysiological assessments and in vitro screenings. Ultimately, we believe that patient-derived dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), particularly those isolated from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs), may represent a feasible alternative to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in many labs with standard cell culture conditions and limited (human and economic) resources.
