Photocatalysis is an advanced oxidation process that is an environmentally friendly option and one of the most critical technologies in green chemistry today. This work studied the upscaling of photocatalysis as a suitable process for wastewater treatment to remove emerging pollutants. For this purpose, unsupported and supported TiO2 photocatalysts were tested in the photodegradation of ciprofloxacin as a model molecule of an emerging wastewater component, using visible, UV radiation, and solar light. The suitability of TiO2 as a photocatalyst to decompose ciprofloxacin was confirmed in batch photoreactor under Visible and UV radiation, with degradation rates up to 90% after 30 min of irradiation and low adsorption values. TiO2 as a photocatalyst coated in glass support material at the packed bed photoreactor showed good photoactivity for emergent contaminants degradation (95%) under solar radiation. It has been possible to verify that the photocatalytic reactor system constitutes a viable process for eliminating emerging contaminants through environmentally sustainable treatments. Our results corroborate the possibility of degrading emerging contaminants by solar radiation using a packed bed photoreactor, providing a more effective option from a practical and economical point of view for wastewater effluent treatments.

El objetivo de esta investigaci��n es aproximar al lector al conocimiento de la cer��mica, los materiales, la ac��stica y la simbolog��a presentes en la botella antropomorfa de triple elipsoide comunicante con doble silbato de la cultura Bah��a de la Rep��blica del Ecuador mediante el estudio multidisciplinar del artefacto sonoro. En dicho estudio se plante�� la aplicaci��n de una metodolog��a cualitativa y cuantitativa desarrollada a trav��s de la investigaci��n documental, complementada con t��cnicas de an��lisis de materiales en laboratorio, m��tricas ac��sticas, ensayos de posibilidades sonoras y producci��n de r��plicas en arcilla. ENGLISH: Organological Structure and Sound Effect of an Anthropomorphic Triple Ellipsoid Bottle with Double Whistle from the Bahia Culture of Ecuador (600 BC���650 AD). The purpose of this research is to bring the reader closer to the knowledge of ceramics, materials, acoustics and symbology present in the anthropomorphic bottle of triple communicating ellipsoid with double whistle of the Bahia culture of the Republic of Ecuador through the multidisciplinary study of the sonorous artifact. In this study, the application of a qualitative and quantitative methodology developed through documentary research, complemented with techniques of analysis of materials in the laboratory, acoustic metrics, tests of sound possibilities and production of clay replicas was proposed. These contributions allow us to define the bottle as a complex acoustic object in which multiple knowledge developed during more than a thousand years of evolution converge.

International audience; The rapidity of the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis (IC) is crucial to allow the early introduction of antifungal therapy that dramatically increases the survival rate of patients. Early diagnosis is unfortunately often delayed because Candida blood culture, the gold standard diagnostic test, is positive in only 50% of cases of IC and takes several days to obtain this result. Complementary non-culture-based methods relying on the detection of Candida cell wall polysaccharides in the serum, β-glucans and mannans, by enzymatic and immunological reagents have been successfully developed to allow a more efficient patients care. We have previously demonstrated that detection of circulating glycans by mass spectrometry could provide a reliable and cost-effective early diagnosis method called MS-DS for Mass Spectrometry of Di-Saccharide. Here, by comparing patient's sera and Candida albicans strains deficient in carbohydrates synthesis, we demonstrate that trehalose derived from fungal metabolism can be specifically targeted by MS-DS to allow early diagnosis. In particular, the use of C. albicans strains deficient in the synthesis of trehalose synthesizing enzymes Tps1 and Tps2 show that MS-DS results were correlated to the metabolism of trehalose. Finally, we demonstrate that the performance of the IC diagnosis can be significantly improved by using high resolution mass spectrometry, which opens new perspectives in the management of the disease.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are webs of extracellular nuclear DNA extruded by dying neutrophils infiltrating tissue. NETs constitute a defence mechanism to entrap and kill fungi and bacteria. Tumours induce the formation of NETs to the advantage of the malignancy via a variety of mechanisms shown in mouse models. Here, we investigated the presence of NETs in a variety of human solid tumours and their association with IL-8 (CXCL8) protein expression and CD8+ T-cell density in the tumour microenvironment. Multiplex immunofluorescence panels were developed to identify NETs in human cancer tissues by co-staining with the granulocyte marker CD15, the neutrophil marker myeloperoxidase and citrullinated histone H3 (H3Cit), as well as IL-8 protein and CD8+ T cells. Three ELISA methods to detect and quantify circulating NETs in serum were optimised and utilised. Whole tumour sections and tissue microarrays from patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC; n = 14), bladder cancer (n = 14), melanoma (n = 11), breast cancer (n = 31), colorectal cancer (n = 20) and mesothelioma (n = 61) were studied. Also, serum samples collected retrospectively from patients with metastatic melanoma (n = 12) and NSCLC (n = 34) were ELISA assayed to quantify circulating NETs and IL-8. NETs were detected in six different human cancer types with wide individual variation in terms of tissue density and distribution. At least in NSCLC, bladder cancer and metastatic melanoma, NET density positively correlated with IL-8 protein expression and inversely correlated with CD8+ T-cell densities. In a series of serum samples from melanoma and NSCLC patients, a positive correlation between circulating NETs and IL-8 was found. In conclusion, NETs are detectable in formalin-fixed human biopsy samples from solid tumours and in the circulation of cancer patients with a considerable degree of individual variation. NETs show a positive association with IL-8 and a trend towards a negative association with CD8+ tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes.
