Abstract

HL-LHC will confront the WLCG community with enormous data storage, management and access challenges. These are as much technical as economical. In the WLCG-DOMA Access working group, members of the experiments and site managers have explored different models for data access and storage strategies to reduce cost and complexity, taking into account the boundary conditions given by our community.Several of these scenarios have been evaluated quantitatively, such as the Data Lake model and incremental improvements of the current computing model with respect to resource needs, costs and operational complexity.To better understand these models in depth, analysis of traces of current data accesses and simulations of the impact of new concepts have been carried out. In parallel, evaluations of the required technologies took place. These were done in testbed and production environments at small and large scale.We will give an overview of the activities and results of the working group, describe the models and summarise the results of the technology evaluation focusing on the impact of storage consolidation in the form of Data Lakes, where the use of streaming caches has emerged as a successful approach to reduce the impact of latency and bandwidth limitation.We will describe the experience and evaluation of these approaches in different environments and usage scenarios. In addition we will present the results of the analysis and modelling efforts based on data access traces of the experiments.

Abstract

The data volumes stored in telescope archives is constantly increasing due to the development and improvements in the instrumentation. Often the archives need to be stored over a distributed storage architecture, provided by independent compute centres. Such a distributed data archive requires overarching data management orchestration. Such orchestration comprises of tools which handle data storage and cataloguing, and steering transfers integrating different storage systems and protocols, while being aware of data policies and locality. In addition, it needs a common Authorisation and Authentication Infrastructure (AAI) layer which is perceived as a single entity by end users and provides transparent data access. The scientific domain of particle physics also uses complex and distributed data management systems. The experiments at the Large Hadron Collider\,(LHC) accelerator at CERN generate several hundred petabytes of data per year. This data is globally distributed to partner sites and users using national compute facilities. Several innovative tools were developed to successfully address the distributed computing challenges in the context of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). The work being carried out in the ESCAPE project and in the Data Infrastructure for Open Science (DIOS) work package is to prototype a Scientific Data Lake using the tools developed in the context of the WLCG, harnessing different physics scientific disciplines addressing FAIR standards and Open Data. We present how the Scientific Data Lake prototype is applied to address astronomical data use cases. Abstract

Large community of high-energy physicists share their data all around world making it necessary to ship a large number of files over wide- area networks. Regional disk caches such as the Southern California Petabyte Scale Cache have been deployed to reduce the data access latency. We observe that about 94% of the requested data volume were served from this cache, without remote transfers, between Sep. 2022 and July 2023. In this paper, we show the predictability of the resource utilization by exploring the trends of recent cache usage. The time series based prediction is made with a machine learning approach and the prediction errors are small relative to the variation in the input data. This work would help understanding the characteristics of the resource utilization and plan for additional deployments of caches in the future.

Abstract

A new near detector for the K2K long baseline neutrino experiment, the SciBar, was constructed and started data taking to study neutrino interactions. In K2K, neutrino oscillation is studied by comparing the number of neutrino interactions and energy spectrum between near and far detectors. In order to study neutrino oscillations more precisely, it is necessary to improve the measurement of neutrino spectrum and interactions below 1 GeV, where the latest K2K results suggest maximum oscillation. For that purpose, SciBar is designed to be fully active with fine segmentation. We present the design and basic performance. All detector components have been working as expected. Also presented are the measurements of charged current interactions which are used in the latest K2K oscillation analysis. Index Terms--Detectors, neutrinos, scintillation detectors.

14. The Virtual Research Environment: A multi-science analysis platform

Abstract

One of the objectives of the ESCAPE collaboration, within the context of the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud, is integrating analysis workflows from Cosmology, Astrophysics and High Energy Physics into a common framework, making it easier for researchers to share data, software and analysis code. The development of the ESCAPE Science Projects (Dark Matter and Extreme Universe) relies on the implementation of the Virtual Research Environment, a prototype analysis platform deployed in the respect of FAIR data principles. The Virtual Research Environment’s main components are (1) an Authentication and Authorization layer, (2) a federated distributed storage solution, providing functionalities for data injection and replication through a Data Management and Orchestration software, (3) an interactive notebook interface that hides the complexity of the underlying infrastructure and facilitates browsing data catalogues and (4) computing processing power to run full end-to-end analyses through workflow schedulers and resource managers that also allow for pipelines’ preservation. This contribution will depict the collection of services and technologies that compose the Virtual Research Environment, hosted on a cloud infrastructure and managed by an open source, publicly available repository.

Abstract

The 26th International Conference on Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics (CHEP), organized by Jefferson Lab, took place in Norfolk, Virginia from 5–11 May 2023. The conference attracted 581 registered participants from 28 different countries. There were scientific presentations made over the 5 days of the conference. These were divided between 20 long talks and 2 keynotes, which were presented in plenary sessions; 450+ short talks, which were presented in parallel sessions; and 140+ posters split over two dedicated sessions.

Abstract

The ATLAS computing and data models have moved/are moving away from the strict MONARC model (hierarchy) to a mesh model. Evolution of computing models also requires evolution of network infrastructure to enable any Tier2 and Tier3 to easily connect to any Tier1 or Tier2. In this way some changing of the data model are required: a) any site can replicate data from any other site. b) Dynamic data caching. Analysis sites receive datasets from any other site “on demand” based on usage pattern, and possibly using a dynamic placement of datasets by centrally managed replication of whole datasets. Unused data is removed. c) Remote data access. Local jobs could access data stored at remote sites using local caching on a file or sub-file level. In this contribution, the model of shared ATLAS Tier2 and Tier3 facilities in the EGI/gLite flavour is explained. The Tier3s in the US and the Tier3s in Europe are rather different because in Europe we have facilities, which are Tier2s with a Tier3 component (Tier3 with a co-located Tier2). Data taking in ATLAS has been going on for more than one year. The Tier2 and Tier3 facility setup, how do we get the data, how do we enable at the same time grid and local data access, how Tier2 and Tier3 activities affect the cluster differently and process of hundreds of million of events, will be presented. Finally, an example of how a real physics analysis is working at these sites will be shown, and this is a good occasion to see if we have developed all the Grid tools necessary for the ATLAS Distributed Computing community, and in case we do not, to try to fix it, in order to be ready for the foreseen increase in ATLAS activity in the next years.

Abstract

In the context of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) is one of the six particle detectors constructed at the accelerator. ATLAS experiment generates large amounts of raw data which are analysed on different activities by tens of sites all around the world. There are many different monitoring tools spread around the different sites to check the status of the different activities. The ATLAS Site Status Board (SSB) is a framework to monitor the overall status of the ATLAS distributed computing activities in the sites. From another hand, with this monitoring information we have created an infrastructure to automatically exclude and re-include sites in the different activities on the basis of dynamic policy. In this paper we present the infrastructure architecture, implementation details and lessons learned.

Abstract

Data transfer function test was conducted in October 2006. DDM software components were used to transmit, control and monitor data movement. The main purpose of the test was to check system functionality during data transfer from CERN ATLAS centers. The issue of large files transfer is also have been tested.

Abstract

The weak nucleon axial-vector form factor for quasi-elastic interactions is determined using neutrino interaction data from the K2K Scintillating Fiber detector in the neutrino beam at KEK. More than 12,000 events are analyzed, of which half are charged-current quasi-elastic interactions νμn → μ-p occurring primarily in oxygen nuclei. We use a relativistic Fermi gas model for oxygen and assume the form factor is approximately a dipole with one parameter, the axial vector mass MA, and fit to the shape of the distribution of the square of the momentum transfer from the nucleon to the nucleus. Our best fit result for MA = 1.20 ± 0.12 GeV. Furthermore, this analysis includes updated vector form factors from recent electron scattering experiments and a discussion of the effects of the nucleon momentum on the shape of the fitted distributions.

Abstract

We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed and an upper limit of 0.60×10−2 is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV.

Abstract

The High Luminosity phase of the LHC, which aims for a tenfold increase in the luminosity of proton-proton collisions is expected to start operation in eight years. An unprecedented scientific data volume at the multiexabyte scale will be delivered to particle physics experiments at CERN. This amount of data has to be stored and the corresponding technology must ensure fast and reliable data delivery for processing by the scientific community all over the world. The present LHC computing model will not be able to provide the required infrastructure growth even taking into account the expected hardware evolution. To address this challenge the Data Lake R&D project has been launched by the DOMA community in the fall of 2019. State-of-the-art data handling technologies are under active development, and their current status for the Russian Scientific Data Lake prototype is presented here.

Abstract

The European-funded ESCAPE project will prototype a shared solution to computing challenges in the context of the European Open Science Cloud. It targets Astronomy and Particle Physics facilities and research infrastructures and focuses on developing solutions for handling Exabyte scale datasets. The DIOS work package aims at delivering a Data Infrastructure for Open Science. Such an infrastructure would be a non HEP specific implementation of the data lake concept elaborated in the HSF Community White Paper and endorsed in the WLCG Strategy Document for HL-LHC. The science projects in ESCAPE are in different phases of evolution. While HL-LHC can leverage 15 years of experience of distributed computing in WLCG, other sciences are building now their computing models. This contribution describes the architecture of a shared ecosystem of services fulfilling the needs in terms of data organisation, management and access for the ESCAPE community. The backbone of such a data lake will consist of several storage services operated by the partner institutes and connected through reliable networks. Data management and organisation will be orchestrated through Rucio. A layer of caching and latency hiding services, supporting various access protocols will serve the data to heterogeneous facilities, from conventional Grid sites to HPC centres and Cloud providers. The authentication and authorisation system will be based on tokens. For the success of the project, DIOS will integrate open source solutions which demonstrated reliability and scalability as at the multi petabyte scale. Such services will be configured, deployed and complemented to cover the use cases of the ESCAPE sciences which will be further developed during the project.

Abstract

The computing strategy document for HL-LHC identifies storage as one of the main WLCG challenges in one decade from now. In the naive assumption of applying today's computing model, the ATLAS and CMS experiments will need one order of magnitude more storage resources than what could be realistically provided by the funding agencies at the same cost of today. The evolution of the computing facilities and the way storage will be organized and consolidated will play a key role in how this possible shortage of resources will be addressed. In this contribution we will describe the architecture of a WLCG data lake, intended as a storage service geographically distributed across large data centers connected by fast network with low latency. Will present the experience with our first prototype, showing how the concept, implemented at different scales, can serve different needs, from regional and national consolidation of storage to an international data provisioning service. We will highlight how the system leverages its distributed nature, the economy of scale and different classes of storage to optimise the hardware and operational cost, through a set of policy driven decisions concerning data placement and data retention. We will discuss how the system leverages or interoperates with existing federated storage solutions. We will finally describe the possible data processing models in this environment and present our first benchmarks.
