The diversity of life on Earth is made possible through an immense variety of proteins that stems from less than a couple of dozen native amino acids. Is it possible to achieve similar engineering freedom and precision to design electronic materials? What if a handful of nonnative residues with a wide range of characteristics could be rationally placed in sequences to form organic macromolecules with specifically targeted properties and functionalities? Referred to as molecular electrets, dipolar oligomers and polymers composed of non-native aromatic beta-amino acids, anthranilamides (Aa) provide venues for pursuing such possibilities. The electret molecular dipoles play a crucial role in rectifying charge transfer, e.g., enhancing charge separation and suppressing undesired charge recombination, which is essential for photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and other solar-energy applications. A set of a few Aa residues can serve as building blocks for molecular electrets with widely diverse electronic properties, presenting venues for bottom-up designs. We demonstrate how three substituents and structural permutations within an Aa residue widely alter its reduction potential. Paradigms of diversity in electronic properties, originating from a few changes within a basic molecular structure, illustrate the promising potentials of biological inspiration for energy science and engineering.

In biology, an immense diversity of protein structural and functional motifs originates from only 20 common proteinogenic native amino acids arranged in various sequences. Is it possible to attain the same diversity in electronic materials based on organic macromolecules composed of non-native residues with different characteristics? This publication describes the design, preparation and characterization of non-native aromatic β-amino acid residues, i.e. derivatives of anthranilic acid, for polyamides that can efficiently mediate hole transfer. Chemical derivatization with three types of substituents at two positions of the aromatic ring allows for adjusting the energy levels of the frontier orbitals of the anthranilamide residues over a range of about one electronvolt. Most importantly, the anthranilamide residues possess permanent electric dipoles, adding to the electronic properties of the bioinspired conjugates they compose, making them molecular electrets.

To compare 2 different graft preparation techniques to determine biomechanical strength and resultant tissue trauma evaluated by histology. Twelve common flexors of the finger's tendons were prepared with either tubulization (SpeedTrap™) or transtendon stiches (Orthocord™). The stiffness, resistance and energy at maximum load were tested for biomechanical assessment in both groups. After load testing, Samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) to evaluate histological damage. We observe that the time to prepare tendons with SpeedTrap™ was 8.3 times faster (1:25 min) than traditional ones (15:02 min). In all cases, the mean values for SpeedTrap™ were higher in terms of strength, stiffness and energy at maximum load than for traditional suture but without significant difference (p > 0.05). The Krackow stitch produces greater structural damage to the collagen fibers while SpeedTrap™ maintains better organized arrangement of the fibers after tubulization preparation. With the results obtained, we can conclude that the tubulization technique allows faster graft preparation with less structural damage to the manipulated tissue without altering the biomechanical resistance provided by the transtendon suture technique., (© 2024. Medium viscosity strongly affects the dynamics of solvated species and can drastically alter the deactivation pathways of their excited states. This study demonstrates the utility of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as a room-temperature solid-state medium for optical spectroscopy. As a thermoset elastic polymer, PDMS is transparent in the near ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectral regions. It is easy to mould into any shape, forming surfaces with a pronounced smoothness. While PDMS is broadly used for the fabrication of microfluidic devices, it swells in organic solvents, presenting severe limitations for the utility of such devices for applications employing non-aqueous fluids. Nevertheless, this swelling is reversible, which proves immensely beneficial for loading samples into the PDMS solid matrix. Transferring molecular-rotor dyes (used for staining prokaryotic cells and amyloid proteins) from non-viscous solvents into PDMS induces orders-of-magnitude enhancement of their fluorescence quantum yield and excited-state lifetimes, providing mechanistic insights about their deactivation pathways. These findings demonstrate the unexplored potential of PDMS as a solid solvent for optical applications.

Cannabis sativa is a global multi-billion-dollar cash crop with numerous industrial uses, including in medicine and recreation where its value is largely owed to the production of pharmacological and psychoactive metabolites known as cannabinoids. Often underappreciated in this role, the lipoxygenase (LOX)-derived green leaf volatiles (GLVs), also known as the scent of cut grass, are the hypothetical origin of hexanoic acid, the initial substrate for cannabinoid biosynthesis. The LOX pathway is best known as the primary source of plant oxylipins, molecules analogous to the eicosanoids from mammalian systems. These molecules are a group of chemically and functionally diverse fatty acid-derived signals that govern nearly all biological processes including plant defense and development. The interaction between oxylipin and cannabinoid biosynthetic pathways remains to be explored. Despite their unique importance in this crop, there has not been a comprehensive investigation focusing on the genes responsible for oxylipin biosynthesis in any Cannabis species. This study documents the first genome-wide catalogue of the Cannabis sativa oxylipin biosynthetic genes and identified 21 LOX, five allene oxide synthases (AOS), three allene oxide cyclases (AOC), one hydroperoxide lyase (HPL), and five 12-oxo-phytodienoic acid reductases (OPR). Gene collinearity analysis found chromosomal regions containing several isoforms maintained across Cannabis, Arabidopsis, and tomato. Promoter, expression, weighted co-expression genetic network, and functional enrichment analysis provide evidence of tissue- and cultivar-specific transcription and roles for distinct isoforms in oxylipin and cannabinoid biosynthesis. Four Cu(I) bis (phenanthroline) photosensitizers formulated from a new ligand structural motif ( Cu1-Cu4 ) coded according to their 2,9-substituents were synthesized, structurally characterized, and fully evaluated using steady-state and time-resolved absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements as well as electrochemistry. The 2,9-disubstituted-3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands feature the following six-membered ring systems prepared through photochemical synthesis: 4,4-dimethylcyclohexyl ( 1 ), tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl (2 ), tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-yl ( 3 ), and 4,4-difluorocyclohexyl ( 4 ). Universally, these Cu(I) metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) chromophores display excited-state lifetimes on the microsecond time scale at room temperature, including the three longest-lived homoleptic cuprous phenanthroline excited states measured to date in de-aerated CH 2 Cl 2 , τ = 2.5-4.3 μs. This series of molecules also feature high PL quantum efficiencies (Φ PL = 5.3-12% in CH 2 Cl 2 ). Temperature-dependent PL lifetime experiments confirmed that all these molecules exhibit reverse intersystem crossing and display thermally activated delayed PL from a 1 MLCT excited state lying slightly above the 3 MLCT state, 1050-1490 cm -1 . Ultrafast and conventional transient absorption measurements confirmed that the PL originates from the MLCT excited state, which remains sterically arrested, preventing an excessive flattening distortion even when dissolved in Lewis basic CH 3 CN. Combined PL and electrochemical data provided evidence that Cu1-Cu4 are highly potent photoreductants ( E ox * = -1.73 to -1.62 V vs Fc +/0 in CH 3 CN), whose potentials are altered solely based on which heteroatoms or substituents are resident on the 2,9-appended ring derivatives. It is proposed that long-range electronic inductive effects are responsible for the systematic modulation observed in the PL spectra, excited-state lifetimes, and the ground state absorption spectra and redox potentials. Cu1-Cu4 quantitatively follow the energy gap law, correlating well with structurally related cuprous phenanthrolines and are also shown to triplet photosensitize the excited states of 9,10-diphenylanthracene with bimolecular rate constants ranging from 1.61 to 2.82 × 10 8 M -1 s -1 . The ability to tailor both photophysical and electrochemical properties using long-range inductive effects imposed by the 2,9-ring platforms advocates new directions for future MLCT chromophore discovery.

This article reports the synthesis and characterization of a novel self-immolative linker, based on thiocarbonates, which releases a free thiol upon activation via enzymes. We demonstrate that thiocarbonate self-immolative linkers can be used to detect the enzymes penicillin G amidase (PGA) and nitroreductase (NTR) with high sensitivity using absorption spectroscopy. Paired with modern thiol amplification technology, the detection of PGA and NTR were achieved at concentrations of 160 nM and 52 nM respectively. In addition, the PGA probe was shown to be compatible with both biological thiols and enzymes present in cell lysates.

Natural dyes and pigments offer incomparable diversity of structures and functionalities, making them an excellent source of inspiration for the design and development of synthetic chromophores with a myriad of emerging properties. Formed during maturation of red wines, pyranoanthocyanins are electron-deficient cationic pyranoflavylium dyes with broad absorption in the visible spectral region and pronounced chemical and photostability. Herein, we survey the optical and electrochemical properties of synthetic pyranoflavylium dyes functionalized with different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups, which vary their reduction potentials over a range of about 400 mV. Despite their highly electron-deficient cores, the exploration of pyranoflavyliums as photosensitizers has been limited to the "classical" n -type dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) where they act as electron donors. In light of their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties, however, these biomimetic synthetic dyes should prove to be immensely beneficial as chromophores in p -type DSSCs, where their ability to act as photooxidants, along with their pronounced photostability, can benefit key advances in solar-energy science and engineering., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The development of endosomal disruptive agents is a major challenge in the field of drug delivery and pharmaceutical chemistry. Current endosomal disruptive agents are composed of polymers, peptides, and nanoparticles and have had limited clinical impact. Alternatives to traditional endosomal disruptive agents are therefore greatly needed. In this report, we introduce a new class of low molecular weight endosomal disruptive agents, termed caged surfactants, that selectively disrupt endosomes via reversible PEGylation under acidic endosomal conditions. The caged surfactants have the potential to address several of the limitations hindering the development of current endosomal disruptive agents, such as high toxicity and low excretion, and are amenable to traditional medicinal chemistry approaches for optimization. In this report, we synthesized three generations of caged surfactants and demonstrated that they can enhance the ability of cationic lipids to deliver mRNA into primary cells. We also show that caged surfactants can deliver siRNA into cells when modified with the RNA-binding dye thiazole orange. We anticipate that the caged surfactants will have numerous applications in pharmaceutical chemistry and drug delivery given their versatility.

Nitroaromatic compounds are inherently nonfluorescent, and the subpicosecond lifetimes of the singlet excited states of many small nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as nitronaphthalenes, render them unfeasible for photosensitizers and photo-oxidants, despite their immensely beneficial reduction potentials. This article reports up to a 7000-fold increase in the singlet-excited-state lifetime of 1-nitronaphthalene upon attaching an amine or an N -amide to the ring lacking the nitro group. Varying the charge-transfer (CT) character of the excited states and the medium polarity balances the decay rates along the radiative and the two nonradiative pathways and can make these nitronaphthalene derivatives fluoresce. The strong electron-donating amine suppresses intersystem crossing (ISC) but accommodates CT pathways of nonradiate deactivation. Conversely, the N -amide does not induce a pronounced CT character but slows down ISC enough to achieve relatively long lifetimes of the singlet excited state. These paradigms are key for the pursuit of electron-deficient ( n -type) organic conjugates with promising optical characteristics.

In the first two decades of the XXI century, corroles have emerged as an important class of porphyrinoids for photonics and biomedical photonics. In comparison with porphyrins, corroles have lower molecular symmetry and higher electron density, which leads to uniquely complementary properties. In macrocycles of free-base corroles, for example, three protons are distributed among four pyrrole nitrogens. It results in distinct tautomers that have different thermodynamic energies. Herein, we focus on the excited-state dynamics of a corrole modified with L-phenylalanine. The tautomerization in the singlet-excited state occurs in the timescales of about 10-100 picoseconds and exhibits substantial kinetic isotope effects. It, however, does not discernably affect nanosecond deactivation of the photoexcited corrole and its basic photophysics. Nevertheless, this excited-state tautomerization dynamics can strongly affect photoinduced processes with comparable or shorter timescales, considering the 100-meV energy differences between the tautomers in the excited state. The effects on the kinetics of charge transfer and energy transfer, initiated prior to reaching the equilibrium thermalization of the excited-state tautomer population, can be indeed substantial. Such considerations are crucially important in the design of systems for artificial photosynthesis and other forms of energy conversion and charge transduction.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a pivotal role in many cellular processes and can be either beneficial or harmful. The design of ROS-sensitive fluorophores has allowed for imaging of specific activity and has helped elucidate mechanisms of action for ROS. Understanding the oxidative role of ROS in the many roles it plays allows us to understand the human body. This review provides a concise overview of modern advances in the field of ROS imaging. Elucidating the factors that control charge transfer rates in relatively flexible conjugates is of importance for understanding energy flows in biology as well as assisting the design and construction of electronic devices. Here, we report ultrafast electron transfer (ET) and hole transfer (HT) between a corrole (Cor) donor linked to a perylene-diimide (PDI) acceptor by a tetrameric alanine (Ala) 4 Selective photoexcitation of the donor and acceptor triggers subpicosecond and picosecond ET and HT. Replacement of the (Ala) 4 linker with either a single alanine or phenylalanine does not substantially affect the ET and HT kinetics. We infer that electronic coupling in these reactions is not mediated by tetrapeptide backbone nor by direct donor-acceptor interactions. Employing a combination of NMR, circular dichroism, and computational studies, we show that intramolecular hydrogen bonding brings the donor and the acceptor into proximity in a "scorpion-shaped" molecular architecture, thereby accounting for the unusually high ET and HT rates. Photoinduced charge transfer relies on a (Cor)NH … O=C-NH … O=C(PDI) electronic-coupling pathway involving two pivotal hydrogen bonds and a central amide group as a mediator. Biological structure-function relationships offer incomparable paradigms for charge-transfer (CT) science and its implementation in solar-energy engineering, organic electronics, and photonics. Electrets are systems with co-directionally oriented electric dopes with immense importance for CT science, and bioinspired molecular electrets are polyamides of anthranilic-acid derivatives with designs originating from natural biomolecular motifs. This publication focuses on the synthesis of molecular electrets with ether substituents. As important as ether electret residues are for transferring holes under relatively high potentials, the synthesis of their precursors presents formidable challenges. Each residue in the molecular electrets is introduced as its 2-nitrobenzoic acid (NBA) derivative. Hence, robust and scalable synthesis of ether derivatives of NBA is essential for making such hole-transfer molecular electrets. Purdie-Irvine alkylation, using silver oxide, produces with 90% yield the esters of the NBA building block for iso-butyl ether electrets. It warrants additional ester hydrolysis for obtaining the desired NBA precursor. Conversely, Williamson etherification selectively produces the same free-acid ether derivative in one-pot reaction, but a 40% yield. The high yields of Purdie-Irvine alkylation and the selectivity of the Williamson etherification provide important guidelines for synthesizing building blocks for bioinspired molecular electrets and a wide range of other complex ether conjugates.

Electron-deficient π-conjugated functional dyes lie at the heart of organic optoelectronics. Adding nitro groups to aromatic compounds usually quenches their fluorescence via inter-system crossing (ISC) or internal conversion (IC). While strong electronic coupling of the nitro groups with the dyes ensures the benefits from these electron-withdrawing substituents, it also leads to fluorescence quenching. Here, we demonstrate how such electronic coupling affects the photophysics of acceptor-donor-acceptor fluorescent dyes, with nitrophenyl acceptors and a pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole donor. The position of the nitro groups and the donor-acceptor distance strongly affect the fluorescence properties of the bis-nitrotetraphenylpyrrolopyrroles. Concurrently, increasing solvent polarity quenches the emission that recovers upon solidifying the media. Intramolecular charge transfer (CT) and molecular dynamics, therefore, govern the fluorescence of these nitro-aromatics. While balanced donor-acceptor coupling ensures fast radiative deactivation and slow ISC essential for large fluorescence quantum yields, vibronic borrowing accounts for medium dependent IC via back CT. Charge transfer and charge transport are by far among the most important processes for sustaining life on Earth and for making our modern ways of living possible. Involving multiple electron-transfer steps, photosynthesis and cellular respiration have been principally responsible for managing the energy flow in the biosphere of our planet since the Great Oxygen Event. It is impossible to imagine living organisms without charge transport mediated by ion channels, or electron and proton transfer mediated by redox enzymes. Concurrently, transfer and transport of electrons and holes drive the functionalities of electronic and photonic devices that are intricate for our lives. While fueling advances in engineering, charge-transfer science has established itself as an important independent field, originating from physical chemistry and chemical physics, focusing on paradigms from biology, and gaining momentum from solar-energy research. Here, we review the fundamental concepts of charge transfer, and outline its core role in a broad range of unrelated fields, such as medicine, environmental science, catalysis, electronics and photonics. The ubiquitous nature of dipoles, for example, sets demands on deepening the understanding of how localized electric fields affect charge transfer. Charge-transfer electrets, thus, prove important for advancing the field and for interfacing fundamental science with engineering. Synergy between the vastly different aspects of charge-transfer science sets the stage for the broad global impacts that the advances in this field have.

This article reports two discoveries. (1) 2-Methoxyethanol induces unprecedented selectivity for etherification of 5-hydroxy-2-nitrobenzic acids without forming undesired esters. Ants are among the most successful species at invading new environments. Their success undeniably comes from their various modes of reproduction and colony breeding structures, which influence their dispersal ability, reproductive potential, and foraging strategies. Almost all invasive ant species studied so far form supercolonies, a dense network of interconnected nests comprising numerous queens, without aggression toward non-nestmates. This strategy results in invasive colonies that are able to grow extremely fast and large while avoiding intraspecific competition, allowing them to monopolize environmental resources and outcompete native species. Here, we developed and used 10 microsatellite markers to investigate the population structure and breeding system of the dark rover ant Brachymyrmex patagonicus Mayr in its introduced range. We determined whether this species exhibits a supercolonial structure by assessing whether different nests belonged to the same genetic colony. We inferred its dispersal ability by investigating isolation by distance and estimated the numbers of queens per colonies and mating per queen through parent-offspring inferences. We found that most of the colonies of B. patagonicus were comprised of a single nest, headed by a single queen. Each nest was distinct from one another, without isolation by distance, which suggests strong dispersal ability through nuptial flights. These features are commonly observed in noninvasive and native ant species, but they are surprising for a successful invasive ant, as they strongly differ from other invasive ants. The electronic properties of amide linkers, which are intricate components of biomolecules, offer a wealth of unexplored possibilities. Herein, we demonstrate how the different modes of attaching an amide to a pyrene chromophore affect the electrochemical and optical properties of the chromophore. Thus, although they cause minimal spectral shifts, amide substituents can improve either the electron-accepting or electron-donating capabilities of pyrene. Specifically, inversion of the amide orientation shifts the reduction potentials by 200 mV. These trends indicate that, although amides affect to a similar extent the energies of the ground and singlet excited states of pyrene, the effects on the doublet states of its radical ions are distinctly different. This behavior reflects the unusually strong orientation dependence of the resonance effects of amide substituents, which should extend to amide substituents on other types of chromophores in general. These results represent an example where the Hammett sigma constants fail to predict substituent effects on electrochemical properties. On the other hand, Swain-Lupton parameters are found to be in good agreement with the observed trends. Examination of the frontier orbitals of the pyrene derivatives and their components reveals the underlying reason for the observed amide effects on the electronic properties of this polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and points to key molecular-design strategies for electronic and energy-conversion systems., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Molecular dipoles present important, but underutilized, methods for guiding electron transfer (ET) processes. While dipoles generate fields of Gigavolts per meter in their vicinity, reported differences between rates of ET along versus against dipoles are often small or undetectable. Herein we show unprecedentedly large dipole effects on ET. Depending on their orientation, dipoles either ensure picosecond ET, or turn ET completely off. Furthermore, favorable dipole orientation makes ET possible even in lipophilic medium, which appears counterintuitive for non-charged donor-acceptor systems. Our analysis reveals that dipoles can substantially alter the ET driving force for low solvent polarity, which accounts for these unique trends. The ability to control charge transfer at molecular and nanometer scales represents the ultimate level of electronic mastery, and its impacts cannot be overstated. As electrostatic analogues of magnets, electrets possess ordered electric dipoles that present key paradigms for directing transduction of electrons and holes. Herein we describe the design and development of fluorinated aminoanthranilamides, derivatives of non-native aromatic beta-amino acids, as building blocks for hole-transfer molecular electrets. A highly regio-selective nucleophilic aromatic substitution of difluorinated nitrobenzoic acid provides the underpinnings for an array of unprecedented anthranilamide structures. Spin density distribution and electrochemical analyses reveal that fluorine induces about 200 mV positive shifts in reduction potentials without compromising the stability of the oxidized residues, making them invaluable building blocks for hole-transfer systems. These findings open unexplored routes to novel amino-acid structures, setting a foundation for bringing principles of proteomics to designs of charge-transfer systems.

Large aza-analogues of curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with a double-helicene structure present unique features for molecular photonics. We present the preparation and characterization of three such structures. The synthesis of these heterocyclic nanographenes involves only a few high-yield steps that use readily available starting materials. X-ray analysis revealed that each of these new dyes has three conformational isomers: one diastereoisomer in a meso form and two enantiomers in twisted forms [(P,P)] and [(M,M)]. The low energy barriers between the conformers, however, prevent their separation by using chiral HPLC, and the NMR spectra show only one set of signals for each of these curved compounds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations quantify the small energy difference and the small energy barriers between the chiral and meso forms, which fully supports the experimental results. Their optical absorption lacks any sensitivity to the solvent environment, whereas their fluorescence features exhibit pronounced solvatochromism. This rarely observed solvatofluorochromism of centrosymmetric molecules without either electron-withdrawing groups or -donating substituents was probed by using time-resolved spectroscopy. Suppressing the charge recombination (CR) that follows an efficient charge separation (CS) is of key importance for energy, electronics, and photonics applications. We focus on the role of dynamic gating for impeding CR in a molecular rotor, comprising an electron donor and acceptor directly linked via a single bond. The media viscosity has an unusual dual effect on the dynamics of CS and CR in this dyad. For solvents with intermediate viscosity, CR is 1.5-3 times slower than CS. Lowering the viscosity below ∼0.6 mPa s or increasing it above ∼10 mPa s makes CR 10-30 times slower than CS. Ring rotation around the donor-acceptor bond can account only for the trends observed for nonviscous solvents. Media viscosity, however, affects not only torsional but also vibrational modes. Suppressing predominantly slow vibrational modes by viscous solvents can impact the rates of CS and CR to a different extent. That is, an increase in the viscosity can plausibly suppress modes that are involved in the transition from the charge-transfer (CT) to the ground state, i.e., CR, but at the same time are not important for the transition from the locally excited to the CT state, i.e., CS. These results provide a unique example of synergy between torsional and vibronic modes and their drastic effects on charge-transfer dynamics, thus setting paradigms for controlling CS and CR.

Photoinduced intramolecular direct arylation allows structurally unique compounds containing phenanthro[9',10':4,5]imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridine and imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridine skeletons, which mediate excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), to be efficiently synthesized. The developed polycyclic aromatics demonstrate that the combination of five-membered ring structures with a rigid arrangement between a proton donor and a proton acceptor provides a means for attaining large fluorescence quantum yields, exceeding 0.5, even in protic solvents. Steady-state and time-resolved UV/Vis spectroscopy reveals that, upon photoexcitation, the prepared protic heteroaromatics undergo ESIPT, converting them efficiently into their excited-state keto tautomers, which have lifetimes ranging from about 5 to 10 ns. The rigidity of their structures, which suppresses nonradiative decay pathways, is believed to be the underlying reason for the nanosecond lifetimes of these singlet excited states and the observed high fluorescence quantum yields. Hydrogen bonding with protic solvents does not interfere with the excited-state dynamics and, as a result, there is no difference between the occurrences of ESIPT processes in MeOH versus cyclohexane. Acidic media has a more dramatic effect on suppressing ESIPT by protonating the proton acceptor. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of chronic widespread pain (CWP) and compare the quality-of-life (QoL), cardiovascular risk factors, comorbidity, complexity, and health costs with the reference population. A multicenter case-control study was conducted at 3 primary care centers in Barcelona between January and December 2012: 3048 randomized patients were evaluated for CWP according to the American College of Rheumatology definition. Questionnaires on pain, QoL, disability, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and sleep quality were administered. Cardiovascular risk and the Charlson index were calculated. We compared the complexity of cases and controls using Clinical Risk Groups, severity and annual direct and indirect health care costs. CWP criteria were found in 168 patients (92.3% women, prevalence 5.51% [95% confidence interval: 4.75%-6.38%]). Patients with CWP had worse QoL (34.2 vs 44.1, P < 0.001), and greater disability (1.04 vs 0.35; P < 0.001), anxiety (43.9% vs 13.3%; P < 0.001), depression (27% vs 5.8%; P < 0.001), sleep disturbances, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and number of cardiovascular events (13.1% vs 4.8%; P = 0.028) and higher rates of complexity, severity, hospitalization, and mortality. Costs were &OV0556;3751 per year in patients with CWP vs &OV0556;1397 in controls (P < 0.001). In conclusion, the average patient with CWP has a worse QoL and a greater burden of mental health disorders and cardiovascular risk. The average annual cost associated with CWP is nearly 3 times higher than that of patients without CWP, controlling for other clinical factors. These findings have implications for disease management and budgetary considerations.

Oligoamides composed of anthranilic acid derivatives present a promising choice for mediating long-range charge transfer and controlling its directionality. Hole hopping, modulated by the anthranilamide (Aa) permanent dipoles, provides a plausible means for such rectified long-range charge transduction. All aliphatic and most aromatic amides, however, decompose upon oxidation, rendering them unacceptable for hole-hopping pathways. We, therefore, employ electrochemical and computational analysis to examine how to suppress oxidative degradation and stabilize the radical cations of N-acylated Aa derivatives. Our findings reveal two requirements for attaining long-lived radical cations of these aromatic amides: (1) keeping the reduction potentials for oxidizing the Aa residues under about 1.4 V vs SCE and (2) adding an electron-donating group para to the N-terminal amide of the aromatic ring, which prevents the electron spin density of the radical cation from extending over the C-terminal amide. These findings provide essential information for the design of hole-transfer amides.

Cyanine dyes are broadly used for fluorescence imaging and other photonic applications. 3,3'-Diethylthiacyanine (THIA) is a cyanine dye composed of two identical aromatic heterocyclic moieties linked with a single methine, -CH[double bond, length as m-dash]. The torsional degrees of freedom around the methine bonds provide routes for non-radiative decay, responsible for the inherently low fluorescence quantum yields. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we determined that upon photoexcitation, the excited state relaxes along two parallel pathways producing three excited-state transients that undergo internal conversion to the ground state. The media viscosity impedes the molecular modes of ring rotation and preferentially affects one of the pathways of non-radiative decay, exerting a dominant effect on the emission properties of THIA. Concurrently, the polarity affects the energy of the transients involved in the decay pathways and further modulates the kinetics of non-radiative deactivation., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015.)

Controlling charge transfer at a molecular scale is critical for efficient light harvesting, energy conversion, and nanoelectronics. Dipole-polarization electrets, the electrostatic analogue of magnets, provide a means for "steering" electron transduction via the local electric fields generated by their permanent electric dipoles. Here, we describe the first demonstration of the utility of anthranilamides, moieties with ordered dipoles, for controlling intramolecular charge transfer. Donor-acceptor dyads, each containing a single anthranilamide moiety, distinctly rectify both the forward photoinduced electron transfer and the subsequent charge recombination. Changes in the observed charge-transfer kinetics as a function of media polarity were consistent with the anticipated effects of the anthranilamide molecular dipoles on the rectification. The regioselectivity of electron transfer and the molecular dynamics of the dyads further modulated the observed kinetics, particularly for charge recombination. These findings reveal the underlying complexity of dipole-induced effects on electron transfer and demonstrate unexplored paradigms for molecular rectifiers.

During 2009, 2010, and 2011, the reproductive dispersal flight phenology of Formosan subterranean termites (Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki) was assessed on Galveston Island, TX, via LED light-based termite alate traps. In all three years, traps were deployed at sampling sites before the initiation of C. formosanus dispersal flights, and retrieved weekly until the cessation flights. In total, 45, 102, and 90 traps were deployed during 2009, 2010, and 2011, respectively. In all years, C. formosanus flights began during the second full week of May; however, peak dispersal flight activity occurred 2 wk earlier in 2009 and 2011 than in 2010. Significantly more alates were collected during the 2009 flight peak than in 2010 and 2011 despite the fact that greater than twice the number of traps were deployed in 2010 and 2011, versus 2009. Additionally, a greater percentage of traps collected C. formosanus alates in 2009 (71.1%) than in 2010 (38.2%) or 2011 (20.0%). A relatively inexpensive trap design (∼US$25.00 per trap) was developed for this project. The traps used in this work yielded results that were similar to those of other researchers using a variety of different trap designs. It is hoped that these results will allow for more targeted surveillance of C. formosanus dispersal flights by residents and pest management professionals at this location and elsewhere.

Objective: To evaluate health-related quality of life in a large series of primary SS patients using the recently-proposed ESSPRI questionnaire and to evaluate the relationship between the intensity of oral dryness and other signs and symptoms frequently found in these patients., Methods: We evaluated 90 primary SS patients seen consecutively; all fulfilled the current classification criteria. All patients completed the ESSPRI questionnaire. We compared the mean values of the ESSPRI-dry mouth item with other ESSPRI items related to sicca features, general symptoms, quality of life, quality of sleep, psychological and psychiatric features, extraglandular involvement, laboratory features and immunological markers and cardiovascular risk factors. Multivariate regression analysis with a backwards stepwise selection method was performed to identify those variables that were independently associated with dry mouth., Results: Mean intensity of oral dryness measured by the corresponding ESSPRI item was 7.17±0.23. Oral dryness correlated with age both at diagnosis and at study inclusion (p=0.013), but not with gender or with time of disease evolution. No significant correlation was found with the SF-36, HAQ and FIQ questionnaires. We found a significant correlation between the intensity of oral dryness and the quality of sleep (p=0.001), anxiety and depression measured by the GH28 (p=0.004 and 0.024, respectively), and a statistically-significant trend for anxiety and depression measured by the HADS (p=0.08 and 0.07, respectively). No significant correlation was found with the main extraglandular and immunological features; however, a significant correlation between oral dryness and hypertension (p=0.019), type II diabetes mellitus (p=0.005) and hypercholesterolemia (p=0.011) was found. Multivariate regression analysis shows that fatigue measured by ESSPRI (p=0.049), sleep quality (p=0.008) and hypercholesterolemia (p=0.008) were independently associated with dry mouth., Conclusion: We report on the usefulness of the ESSPRI index in evaluating HRQOL associated with oral dryness in primary SS patients. Oral dryness correlated with age and the other sicca symptoms measured by ESSPRI, but not with the main systemic and immunological SS features. In contrast, oral dryness was strongly correlated with fatigue, pain, psychological distress, poor sleep and vascular risk factors. A multidisciplinary therapeutic approach may be the best way of minimizing oral dryness and its consequences in primary SS patients.

Objectives: To characterise patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM) who present a clinical profile suggestive of simulation., Methods: Observational case-control study of 218 patients who met the classification criteria for FM. The profile supporting simulation was based on the proposed criteria for evaluating disability related to the simulation of pain., Results: Compared with controls (n=105), patients with suspected simulation of FM (n=106) had a higher mean age (52.5 vs. 49.2 years, p=0.003), a higher frequency of primary education (88.7% vs. 58.1%; p<0.001), a higher percentage of separated/widowed persons (33.9% vs. 8.6%, p<0.001), a higher frequency of psychiatric disorders (100% vs. 67.6%, p<0.001), a higher mean number of positive 'control' tender points (4.5 vs. 1.3, p<0.001), a higher mean FIQ questionnaire score (89.8 vs. 68.8, p<0.001) and a lower mean LHS questionnaire score (41.0 vs. 59.9, p<0.001). Patients with suspected simulation were able to walk a shorter distance in the 6-minute walk test than controls (231.0 vs. 356.3 metres, p<0.001), while the appearance of allodynia was achieved with a significantly lower mmHg pressure (159.8 vs. 229.9 mm Hg, p<0.001)., Conclusions: Some physical/functional tests, together with the administration of specific questionnaires, may identify a subgroup of patients with FM with a profile consistent with simulation or malingering; these patients have a differentiated demographic and psychiatric profile in comparison with FM patients without a profile of simulation.

Objective: To assess the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among children in highly deprived areas, and its possible association with demographic and socioeconomic indicators., Material and Methods: From March to September 1998 in a convenience sample of 32 communities of the border region of Chiapas, Mexico, selected at random based on the level of poverty and distance from the community to the nearest health care unit (< 1 hour; 1 hour or more), one of every four households with children under 15 years of age was randomly selected to provide three stool samples from their children (n 1478). Bivariate and multivariate (generalized linear models for correlated binary data), analysis were performed., Results: The global prevalence of intestinal parasitosis was 67% (95% confidence interval [CI] 64-70%). Sixty percent had multiple parasites. The prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica/E dispar was 51.2%, that of Giardia lamblia 18.3%, and that of Ascaris lumbricoides 14.5%. Multivariate analysis showed that age and speaking an indigenous language were significantly associated with the presence of E histolytical E dispar and Giardia lamblia. Source of water and lacking a refrigerator and electricity were associated with the presence of Ascaris lumbricoides., Conclusions: Measures should be taken to improve water quality, sewage disposal, and domestic hygiene. Furthermore, health programs should be established to promote breast-feeding, and education policies aimed at reinforcing the use of indigenous languages by physicians in the health services.
