1. THE EFFECT OF PSYCHODRAMA ON ANXIETY LEVELS AND STRESS COPING STYLES IN ACADEMICIANS

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of psychodrama on stress and coping with stress in people working as medical doctors and nurses academicians. This study confirmed whether psychodrama could be effective on stress and coping mechanisms for nurses and medical doctors academicians. Individuals were evaluated by the state and continuity anxiety scale, the stress coping style scale, the Hamilton anxiety scale, and the Hamilton depression scale. The Statistical Program for Social Sciences-SPSS for Windows, version 22.0, was used for statistical analysis (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA).Data are given as mean (standard deviation) and number (percentage). To test the normal distribution compliance of the data, the Kolmogorov Smirnov test, T test for independent groups in normally distributed data with two groups, ANOVA test for data with more than two groups with normal distribution, and Mann Whitney U test for data with normal distribution was used. A statistically significant difference was found in the pre-test and post-test average scores of the applied scales. Practice Implications It is recommended that this study be performed with a more homogeneous patient group. It was found that psychodrama significantly affected stress and stress coping styles in individuals who work as academicians. It was found that psychodrama significantly affected stress and stress-coping styles in individuals. 2. The effects of physiotherapy methods combined with respiratory and relaxation exercises on patients with major depression

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of physiotherapy methods combined with respiratory and relaxation exercises on patients with major depression. This randomized, controlled trial included 42 patients with a sedentary lifestyle, comprising 21 males and 21 females with a mean age of 37.78±11.67 years (range, 20-60 years). The experimental (n:22)and control groups (n:20) were evaluated using the Beck Depression and Anxiety Score, Visual Analog Score, Patient Health Questionnaire-15, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Items, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. In both the experimental group and control group, a statistically significant difference was found in all parameters over time, with greater improvements made in the experimental group than in the control group in all the parameters. A rehabilitation program combined with respiratory and relaxation exercises applied in addition to standard treatment, can obtain more successful outcomes in major depression treatment. 3. Brain metabolite rates in amygdala and hippocampus in vaginismus patients

Abstract

Vaginismus has complex etiology. Regarding its clinical manifestation, it is a condition associated with anxiety and fear. The fact that hippocampus and amygdala are critical regions for the modulation of anxiety suggests that they might be playing a role in the neurobiology of vaginismus. In the present study, therefore, we aimed to investigate the concentrations of cerebral metabolites in both the amygdala and hippocampus in vaginismus patients and healthy controls via magnetic resonance spectroscopy method. A total of 39 vaginismus patients and 26 sexually active healthy controls were enrolled into the study. All the patients and healthy controls underwent magnetic resonance spectroscopy procedure. Comparison of the groups revealed no difference in terms of concentrations of cerebral metabolites in the amygdala, whereas median Cholin (Cho) concentration in the hippocampus was significantly higher in the patient vs. the control group. High concentration of Cho in the hippocampus of vaginismus patients might be indicating the changes in myelination or signal transduction in the relevant region. Considering the role of the hippocampus in fear con-ditioning and fear memory, such changes in the patients are considered as the neurobiological reflections of fear conditioning. 4. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Chiari Malformation: a Case Report

Abstract

Obsessive compulsive disorder is a common psychiatric disorder that severely disrupts functionality due to obsessions and compulsions. An attempt has previously been made to explain the disorder with the psychoanalytic theory and fixation to the anal period but studies on the neurobiology of obsessive compulsive disorder have gradually gained importance in recent years and important findings have been reported. The Chiari malformation is a congenital malformation that emerges with a shift in the structures developing from the hindbrain towards the vertebral channel. It is more commonly seen in women and the etiology is thought to be multifactorial. There are some case reports showing that Chiari malformation and anxiety disorders can exist together. We present a case with obsessive compulsive disorder and Chiari Type 1 malformation comorbidity in this article. [Med-Science 2016; 5(3.000): 908-13]

5. The importance of curettage in cases of sexual violence

Abstract

Sexual assault is among the gravest crime against the physical and moral integrity of an individual. When sexual assault results in pregnancy it causes further psychological and social damage. This study aims to examine the reasons for delayed reporting in cases of sexual assault that result in pregnancy, and the importance of abortion in such cases. Seven cases referred by the judicial authorities to Inonu Universitys Turgut Ozal Medical Center for uterine evacuation are included in the study. The cases were examined in terms of age, whether the parents were still alive, place of residence, assaulter characteristics, mental levels of victims, psychiatric examination results, and gestational week upon referral to the hospital. The mean age of the cases was 17.42±2.76 years. Six of the cases were referred from Malatya and one was referred from a neighboring province. Four of the cases were past their 10th gestational week. Abortions were performed in six of the cases. One of the women, in the 19th week of pregnancy, decided not to have the abortion upon consultation with her family. The women in the cases were, on average, 76 days pregnant upon referral to the center. Their medical histories indicated that five of the cases hid their pregnancy because they were concerned about their familys reaction. None of the cases knew that they were able to end the pregnancy until week 20. Pregnancy is one of the unwanted and preventable consequences of sexual assault. The familys attitude toward the victim plays an important role in earlier detection of the cases. In addition to legislation concerning ending pregnancies, victims and families should be informed about this topic to prevent further trauma for the victim and the to be born child. Abstract

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder in which genetics and environmental factors such as infection and the corresponding immune response play a role in the etiopathogenesis. The aim of this study was to compare some immune factors such as nuclear factor-B (NF-B) activation, myeloperoxidase (MPO), the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-4 (IL-4), and regulatory cytokine transforming growth factor- (TGF-) in schizophrenia patients and an age- and gender-matched control group.Plasma levels of IL-4, TGF-, MPO, and NF-B activation in 20 subjects with treatment-resistant schizophrenia and 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were analyzed. Disease severity was evaluated using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS).Plasma TGF- levels were found to be significantly lower and NF-B to be significantly higher in antipsychotic treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients than in controls in this study. No significant differences were found between the patient and control groups for serum IL-4 and MPO levels.The low TGF- level in treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients in the symptom exacerbation period indicates that there is inadequate Th1/Th2 balance. Large-scale studies are required to investigate whether this is responsible for resistance in schizophrenia. The fact that the increase in NF-B that we found in treatment-resistant schizophrenia patients in this study has also been reported in the first attack in untreated schizophrenia patients in previous studies indicates that NF-B plays a role in the disorder's physiopathology from the beginning.

Abstract

There have been some changes of the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in DSM-5 in terms of its classification and description. First of all, it has been suggested that the disorder should be out of a lower cap of the anxiety disorders and with DSM-5 a new heading has become an issue like obsessive compulsive disorder and related disorders. The ones that suggest the obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders fundamentally assume that the obsessive compulsive disorder and the disorders defined as related with the OCD come from the same etiologic origin unlike the other anxiety disorders. The purpose of this compilation is to mention on how OCD has been defined all along the history and what kind of conceptual changes it went through until DSM-5.
