In a density-imbalanced bilayer Wigner crystal, where the ratio of electron densities in separate layers deviates slightly from unity, defects spontaneously form in one or both layers in the ground state of the system. Due to quantum tunneling, these defects become mobile and the system becomes a defect liquid. Motivated by this idea, we numerically study the semiclassical energetics of individual and paired point defects in the bilayer Wigner crystal system. We use these results in combination with a simple defect model to map the phase diagram of the defect liquid as a function of electron density and interlayer distance. Our results should be relevant for present experimental bilayer Wigner crystal systems.

The multiple-spin exchange frequencies of the bilayer Wigner crystal are determined by the semiclassical method, which is asymptotically exact in the limit of dilute electron densities. The evolution of the exchange frequencies with interlayer distance -- as the crystal undergoes a sequence of structural transitions -- leads to both ferromagnetic and multi-sublattice antiferromagnetic phases. Extrapolation of the results to higher density suggests a rich magnetic phase diagram of the bilayer Wigner crystal, including the possibility of spin-nematic and valence-bond solid phases. The bilayer crystal is stable to higher electron densities than the monolayer, leading to enhanced magnetic energy scales. Our estimates of the exchange energies suggest some of the magnetic phases may be accessible in recently discovered bilayer Wigner crystals in a transition-metal dichalcogenide system., Comment: 12 pages, 17 figures

We investigate the effect of Coulomb drag resistance in a bilayer system of strongly correlated electron liquids magnetized by an in-plane field employing the framework of hydrodynamic theory. We identify a mechanism for drag magnetoresistance, which physically arises from the spin diffusion driven by fluctuations of the spin currents within a partially spin-polarized fluid. This effect is further enhanced by acoustic and optic plasmon resonances within the bilayer, where hydrodynamic plasmons are driven by fluctuating viscous stresses. We express the drag magnetoresistivity in terms of the intrinsic dissipative coefficients and basic thermodynamic properties of the electron fluid. Our results are derived nonperturbatively in interaction strength and do not rely on assuming Fermi-liquid behavior of the electron liquid, and applicable also in the regimes of semiquantum and highly correlated classical fluids., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The two-dimensional Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (2d-YSYK) model provides a universal theory of quantum phase transitions in metals in the presence of quenched random spatial fluctuations in the local position of the quantum critical point. It has a Fermi surface coupled to a scalar field by spatially random Yukawa interactions. We present full numerical solutions of a self-consistent disorder averaged analysis of the 2d-YSYK model in both the normal and superconducting states, obtaining electronic spectral functions, frequency-dependent conductivity, and superfluid stiffness. Our results reproduce key aspects of observations in the cuprates as analyzed by Michon et al. (arXiv:2205.04030). Strongly interacting electronic systems possess rich phase diagrams resulting from the competition between different quantum ground states. A general mechanism that relieves this frustration is the emergence of microemulsion phases, where regions of different phase self-organize across multiple length scales. The experimental characterization of these phases often poses significant challenges, as the long-range Coulomb interaction microscopically mingles the competing states. Here, we use cryogenic reflectance and magneto-optical spectroscopy to observe the signatures of the mixed state between an electronic Wigner crystal and an electron liquid in a MoSe2 monolayer. We find that the transit into this 'microemulsion' state is marked by anomalies in exciton reflectance, spin susceptibility, and Umklapp scattering, establishing it as a distinct phase of electronic matter. Our study of the two-dimensional electronic microemulsion phase elucidates the physics of novel correlated electron states with strong Coulomb interactions.

We study the quantum dynamics of interstitials and vacancies in a two-dimensional Wigner crystal (WC) using a semi-classical instanton method that is asymptotically exact at low density, i.e., in the $r_s\to \infty$ limit. The dynamics of these point defects mediates magnetism with much higher energy scales than the exchange energies of the pure WC. Via exact diagonalization of the derived effective Hamiltonians in the single-defect sectors, we find the dynamical corrections to the defect energies. The resulting expression for the interstitial (vacancy) energy extrapolates to 0 at $r_s = r_{\rm mit} \approx 70$ ($r_s \approx 30$), suggestive of a self-doping instability to a partially melted WC for some range of $r_s$ below $r_{\rm mit}$. We thus propose a "metallic electron crystal'' phase of the two-dimensional electron gas at intermediate densities between a low density insulating WC and a high density Fermi fluid., Comment: 9+3 pages, 7 figures and 1 table

We propose to use local electromagnetic noise spectroscopy as a versatile and noninvasive tool to study Wigner crystal phases of strongly-interacting two-dimensional electronic systems. In-plane imaging of the local noise is predicted to enable single-site resolution of the electron crystal when the sample-probe distance is less than the inter-electron separation. At larger sample-probe distances, noise spectroscopy encodes information about the low-energy Wigner crystal phonons, including the dispersion of the transverse shear mode, the pinning resonance due to disorder, and optical modes emerging, for instance, in bilayer crystals. We discuss the potential utility of local noise probes in analyzing the rich set of phenomena expected to occur in the vicinity of the melting transition.

We analyze the global ground-state (quantum) phase diagram of the one-dimensional Holstein model at half-filling as a function of the strength of the electron-phonon coupling (represented by the strength of the phonon-induced attraction, $U$) and the phonon frequency, $\omega_0$. In addition to reanalyzing the various asymptotic regimes, we have carried out density-matrix renormalization group simulations to correct previous inferences concerning the anti-adiabatic (large $\omega_0$) and strong coupling (large $U$) regimes. There are two distinct phases - a fully gapped commensurate charge-density-wave and a spin-gapped Luther-Emery phase with a gapless charge mode - separated by a phase boundary, with a shape that reflects different microscopic physics in the weak and strong coupling limits., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

The extremely overdoped cuprates are generally considered to be Fermi liquid metals without exotic orders, whereas the underdoped cuprates harbor intertwined states. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, using Cu $L_3$ edge and O $K$ edge resonant x-ray scattering, we reveal a charge order (CO) in overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (0.35 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.6) beyond the superconducting dome. This CO has a periodicity of $\sim$ 6 lattice units with correlation lengths of $\sim 3 - 20$ lattice units. It shows similar in-plane momentum and polarization dependence and dispersive excitations as the CO of underdoped cuprates, but its maximum intensity differs along the c-direction and persists up to 300 K. This CO cannot be explained by either the Fermi surface instability or the doped Hubbard model and its origin remains to be understood. Our results suggest that CO is prevailing in the overdoped metallic regime and superconductivity emerges out of the CO phase upon decreasing hole carriers., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) exhibits extremely low Fermi velocities for electrons, with the speed of sound surpassing the Fermi velocity. This regime enables the use of TBG for amplifying vibrational waves of the lattice through stimulated emission, following the same principles of operation of free-electron lasers. Our work proposes a lasing mechanism relying on the slow-electron bands to produce a coherent beam of acoustic phonons. We propose a device based on undulated electrons in TBG, which we dub the phaser. The device generates phonon beams in a terahertz (THz) frequency range, which can then be used to produce THz electromagnetic radiation. The ability to generate coherent phonons in solids breaks new ground in controlling quantum memories, probing quantum states, realizing non-equilibrium phases of matter, and designing new types of THz optical devices., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures + supplementary material

A Fermi surface coupled to a scalar field can be described in a $1/N$ expansion by choosing the fermion-scalar Yukawa coupling to be random in the $N$-dimensional flavor space, but invariant under translations. We compute the conductivity of such a theory in two spatial dimensions for a critical scalar. We find a Drude contribution, and verify that the proposed $1/\omega^{2/3}$ contribution to the optical conductivity at frequency $\omega$ has vanishing co-efficient for a convex Fermi surface. We also describe the influence of impurity scattering of the fermions, and find that while the self energy resembles a marginal Fermi liquid, the resistivity and optical conductivity behave like a Fermi liquid., Comment: 50 pages, 1 figure. We consider two-dimensional metals of fermions coupled to quantum critical scalars, the latter representing order parameters or emergent gauge fields. We show that at low temperatures ($T$), such metals generically exhibit strange metal behavior with a $T$-linear resistivity arising from spatially random fluctuations in the fermion-scalar Yukawa couplings about a non-zero spatial average. We also find a $T\ln (1/T)$ specific heat, and a rationale for the Planckian bound on the transport scattering time. Perturbative considerations account for the properties of conventional metals, including the range of temperatures where the transport scattering rate is $1/\tau_\text{tr} = 2\pi \lambda T$, where $\lambda$ is a dimensionless strength of the electron-phonon coupling. The fact that measured values satisfy $\lambda \lesssim 1$ has been noted in the context of a possible "Planckian" bound on transport. However, since the electron-phonon scattering is quasi-elastic in this regime, no such Planckian considerations can be relevant. We present and analyze Monte Carlo results on the Holstein model which show that a different sort of bound is at play: a "stability" bound on $\lambda$ consistent with metallic transport. We propose nanoscale magnetometry via isolated single-spin qubits as a probe of superconductivity in two-dimensional materials. We characterize the magnetic field noise at the qubit location, arising from current and spin fluctuations in the sample and leading to measurable polarization decay of the qubit. We show that the noise due to transverse current fluctuations studied as a function of temperature and sample-probe distance can be used to extract useful information about the transition to a superconducting phase and the pairing symmetry of the superconductor. Surprisingly, at low temperatures, the dominant contribution to the magnetic noise arises from longitudinal current fluctuations and can be used to probe collective modes such as monolayer plasmons and bilayer Josephson plasmons. We also characterize the noise due to spin fluctuations, which allows probing the spin structure of the pairing wave function. A single-spin qubit placed near the surface of a conductor acquires an additional contribution to its $1/T_1$ relaxation rate due to magnetic noise created by electric current fluctuations in the material. We analyze this technique as a wireless probe of superconductivity in atomically thin two dimensional materials. At temperatures $T \lesssim T_c$, the dominant contribution to the qubit relaxation rate is due to transverse electric current fluctuations arising from quasiparticle excitations. We demonstrate that this method enables detection of metal-to-superconductor transitions, as well as investigation of the symmetry of the superconducting gap function, through the noise scaling with temperature. We show that scaling of the noise with sample-probe distance provides a window into the non-local quasi-static conductivity of superconductors, both clean and disordered. At low temperatures the quasiparticle fluctuations get suppressed, yet the noise can be substantial due to resonant contributions from collective longitudinal modes, such as plasmons in monolayers and Josephson plasmons in bilayers. We describe the large $N$ saddle point, and the structure of fluctuations about the saddle point, of a theory containing a sharp, critical Fermi surface in two spatial dimensions. The theory describes the onset of Ising order in a Fermi liquid, and closely related theories apply to other cases with critical Fermi surfaces. We employ random couplings in flavor space between the fermions and the bosonic order parameter, but there is no spatial randomness: consequently, the $G$-$\Sigma$ path integral of the theory is expressed in terms of fields bilocal in spacetime. The critical exponents of the large $N$ saddle-point are the same as in the well-studied non-random RPA theory; in particular, the entropy density vanishes in the limit of zero temperature. We present a full numerical solution of the large $N$ saddle-point equations, and the results agree with the critical behavior obtained analytically. Following analyses of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models, we describe scaling operators which descend from fermion bilinears around the Fermi surface. This leads to a systematic consideration of the role of time reparameterization symmetry, and the scaling of the Cooper pairing and $2k_F$ operators which can determine associated instabilities of the critical Fermi surface. We find no violations of scaling from time reparameterizations. A Wigner crystal, a regular electron lattice arising from strong correlation effects, is one of the earliest predicted collective electronic states. This many-body state exhibits quantum and classical phase transitions and has been proposed as a basis for quantum information processing applications. In semiconductor platforms, two-dimensional Wigner crystals have been observed under magnetic field or moir\'e-based lattice potential where the electron kinetic energy is strongly suppressed. Here, we report bilayer Wigner crystal formation without a magnetic or confinement field in atomically thin MoSe$_2$ bilayers separated by hexagonal boron nitride. We observe optical signatures of robust correlated insulating states formed at symmetric (1:1) and asymmetric (4:1 and 7:1) electron doping of the two MoSe$_2$ layers at cryogenic temperatures. We attribute these features to the bilayer Wigner crystals formed from two commensurate triangular electron lattices in each layer, stabilized via inter-layer interaction. These bilayer Wigner crystal phases are remarkably stable and undergo quantum and thermal melting transitions above a critical electron density of up to $6 \times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ and at temperatures of ~40 K. Our results demonstrate that atomically thin semiconductors provide a promising new platform for realizing strongly correlated electronic states, probing their electronic and magnetic phase transitions, and developing novel applications in quantum electronics and optoelectronics., Comment: 4 figures

Scattering experiments have revolutionized our understanding of nature. Examples include the discovery of the nucleus, crystallography, and the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. Scattering techniques differ by the type of the particles used, the interaction these particles have with target materials and the range of wavelengths used. Here, we demonstrate a new 2-dimensional table-top scattering platform for exploring magnetic properties of materials on mesoscopic length scales. Long lived, coherent magnonic excitations are generated in a thin film of YIG and scattered off a magnetic target deposited on its surface. The scattered waves are then recorded using a scanning NV center magnetometer that allows sub-wavelength imaging and operation under conditions ranging from cryogenic to ambient environment. While most scattering platforms measure only the intensity of the scattered waves, our imaging method allows for spatial determination of both amplitude and phase of the scattered waves thereby allowing for a systematic reconstruction of the target scattering potential. Our experimental results are consistent with theoretical predictions for such a geometry and reveal several unusual features of the magnetic response of the target, including suppression near the target edges and gradient in the direction perpendicular to the direction of surface wave propagation. Our results establish magnon scattering experiments as a new platform for studying correlated many-body systems.

We analyze the validity of Eliashberg theory of phonon-mediated superconductivity in 2D systems in light of recent extensive Monte-Carlo studies of the Holstein model. Conventional wisdom says that Eliashberg theory is applicable as long as vertex corrections remain small. For small ratio of the phonon energy $\Omega_0$ and the Fermi energy $E_F$, this condition is supposed to hold even when the dimensionless electron-phonon coupling $\lambda$ is larger than one, i.e., in the strong coupling regime. A comparison between various quantities computed in the Migdal approximation and those computed by Quantum Monte Carlo prove that this belief is wrong, and we identify analytically some of the ways in which this breakdown occurs for various "normal state" properties at $\lambda = \lambda_{cr}$, where $\lambda_{cr} = O(1)$. The breakdown occurs at temperatures high enough that neither superconducting nor charge-density wave correlations extend over any significant range of distances, so it cannot be associated with the onset of an instability toward any of the relevant ordered ground-states - rather it is associated with the local physics of classical bipolaron formation. Still, we show that certain properties, including the superconducting $T_c$ and the superconducting gap structure below $T_c$, can be accurately inferred from the strong-coupling limit of Eliashberg theory at $\lambda \leq \lambda_{cr}$., Comment: 38 pp, 11 figs. We present a theory that is a non-Fermi-liquid counterpart of the Abrikosov-Gor'kov pair-breaking theory due to paramagnetic impurities in superconductors. To this end we analyze a model of interacting electrons and phonons that is a natural generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev-model. In the limit of large numbers of degrees of freedom, the Eliashberg equations of superconductivity become exact and emerge as saddle-point equations of a field theory with fluctuating pairing fields. In its normal state the model is governed by two non-Fermi liquid fixed points, characterized by distinct universal exponents. At low temperatures a superconducting state emerges from the critical normal state. We study the role of pair-breaking on $T_{c}$, where we allow for disorder that breaks time-reversal symmetry. For small Bogoliubov quasi-particle weight, relevant for systems with strongly incoherent normal state, $T_{c}$ drops rapidly as function of the pair breaking strength and reaches a small but finite value before it vanishes at a critical pair-breaking strength via an essential singularity. We propose a numerical method which embeds the variational non-Gaussian wavefunction approach within exact diagonalization, allowing for efficient treatment of correlated systems with both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. Using a generalized polaron transformation, we construct a variational wavefunction that absorbs entanglement between electrons and phonons into a variational non-Gaussian transformation; exact diagonalization is then used to treat the electronic part of the wavefunction exactly, thus taking into account high-order correlation effects beyond the Gaussian level. Keeping the full electronic Hilbert space, the complexity is increased only by a polynomial scaling factor relative to the exact diagonalization calculation for pure electrons. As an example, we use this method to study ground-state properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model, providing evidence for the existence of intervening phases between the spin and charge-ordered states. In particular, we find one of the intervening phases has strong charge susceptibility and binding energy, but is distinct from a charge-density-wave ordered state, while the other intervening phase displays superconductivity at weak couplings. This method, as a general framework, can be extended to treat excited states and dynamics, as well as a wide range of systems with both electron-electron and electron-boson interactions., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures

We introduce and solve a model of interacting electrons and phonons that is a natural generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev-model and that becomes superconducting at low temperatures. In the normal state two Non-Fermi liquid fixed points with distinct universal exponents emerge. At weak coupling superconductivity prevents the onset of low-temperature quantum criticality, reminiscent of the behavior in several heavy-electron and iron-based materials. At strong coupling, pairing of highly incoherent fermions sets in deep in the Non-Fermi liquid regime, a behavior qualitatively similar to that in underdoped cuprate superconductors. The pairing of incoherent time-reversal partners is protected by a mechanism similar to Anderson's theorem for disordered superconductors. The superconducting ground state is characterized by coherent quasiparticle excitations and higher-order bound states thereof, revealing that it is no longer an ideal gas of Cooper pairs, but a strongly coupled pair fluid. The normal-state incoherency primarily acts to suppress the weight of the superconducting coherence peak and reduce the condensation energy. Based on this we expect strong superconducting fluctuations, in particular at strong coupling., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Thermodynamic properties of the square-lattice Holstein model of the electron-phonon problem with phonon frequencies small compared to the bare Fermi energy are obtained using Monte Carlo methods, a strong-coupling (bipolaronic) expansion, and a weak coupling Migdal-Eliashberg approach. Already at elevated temperatures where the charge-density wave (CDW) and superconducting (SC) correlations are very short-range, a crossover occurs as a function of increasing electron-phonon coupling, $\lambda_0$, from a normal metallic regime to a pseudogap regime. At sufficiently low $T$, a SC phase is found for small $\lambda_0$ and a commensurate insulating CDW phase for large $\lambda_0$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Strongly correlated metals often display anomalous transport, including $T$-linear resistivity above the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit. We introduce a tractable microscopic model for such bad metals, by supplementing the well-known Hubbard model --- with hopping $t$ and on-site repulsion $U$ --- with a `screened Coulomb' interaction between charge densities that decays exponentially with spatial separation. This interaction entirely lifts the extensive degeneracy in the spectrum of the $t=0$ Hubbard model, allowing us to fully characterize the small $t$ electric, thermal and thermoelectric transport in our strongly correlated model. Throughout the phase diagram we observe $T$-linear resistivity above the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, together with strong violation of the Weidemann-Franz law and a large thermopower that can undergo sign change. The superconducting (SC) and charge-density-wave (CDW) susceptibilities of the two dimensional Holstein model are computed using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), and compared with results computed using the Migdal-Eliashberg (ME) approach. We access temperatures as low as 25 times less than the Fermi energy, $E_F$, which are still above the SC transition. We find that the SC susceptibility at low $T$ agrees quantitatively with the ME theory up to a dimensionless electron-phonon coupling $\lambda_0 \approx 0.4$ but deviates dramatically for larger $\lambda_0$. We find that for large $\lambda_0$ and small phonon frequency $\omega_0 \ll E_F$ CDW ordering is favored and the preferred CDW ordering vector is uncorrelated with any obvious feature of the Fermi surface., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. v2: discussion improved, added supplemental material

Frustration and the associated phenomenon of "avoided criticality" have been proposed as an explanation for the dramatic relaxation slowdown in glass-forming liquids. To test this, we have undertaken a Monte-Carlo study of possibly the simplest such problem, the 2-dimensional XY model with frustration corresponding to a small flux, $f$, per plaquette. At $f=0$, there is a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at $T^*$, but at any small but non-zero $f$, this transition is avoided, and replaced (presumably) by a vortex-ordering transition at much lower temperatures. We thus have studied the evolution of the dynamics for small and moderate $f$ as the system is cooled from above $T^*$ to below. While we do find strongly temperature dependent slowing of the dynamics as $T$ crosses $T^*$, and that simultaneously the dynamics becomes more complex, neither effect is anywhere nearly as dramatic as the corresponding phenomena in glass-forming liquids. At the very least, this implies that the properties of supercooled liquids must depend on more than frustration and the existence of an avoided transition., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

In the context of the relaxation time approximation to Boltzmann transport theory, we examine the behavior of the Hall number, $n_H$, of a metal in the neighborhood of a Lifshitz transition from a closed Fermi surface to open sheets. We find a universal non-analytic dependence of $n_H$ on the electron density in the high field limit, but a non-singular dependence at low fields. We use the numerical conformal bootstrap in two dimensions to search for finite, closed sub-algebras of the operator product expansion (OPE), without assuming unitarity. We find the minimal models as special cases, as well as additional lines of solutions that can be understood in the Coulomb gas formalism. All the solutions we find that contain the vacuum in the operator algebra are cases where the external operators of the bootstrap equation are degenerate operators, and we argue that this follows analytically from the expressions in arXiv:1202.4698 for the crossing matrices of Virasoro conformal blocks. Our numerical analysis is a special case of the "Gliozzi" bootstrap method, and provides a simpler setting in which to study technical challenges with the method. Loop-level scattering amplitudes for massless particles have singularities in regions where tree amplitudes are perfectly smooth. For example, a $2\to4$ gluon scattering process has a singularity in which each incoming gluon splits into a pair of gluons, followed by a pair of $2\to2$ collisions between the gluon pairs. This singularity mimics double parton scattering because it occurs when the transverse momentum of a pair of outgoing gluons vanishes. The singularity is logarithmic at fixed order in perturbation theory. We exploit the duality between scattering amplitudes and polygonal Wilson loops to study six-point amplitudes in this limit to high loop order in planar ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. The singular configuration corresponds to the limit in which a hexagonal Wilson loop develops a self-crossing. The singular terms are governed by an evolution equation, in which the hexagon mixes into a pair of boxes; the mixing back is suppressed in the planar (large $N_c$) limit. Because the kinematic dependence of the box Wilson loops is dictated by (dual) conformal invariance, the complete kinematic dependence of the singular terms for the self-crossing hexagon on the one nonsingular variable is determined to all loop orders. The complete logarithmic dependence on the singular variable can be obtained through nine loops, up to a couple of constants, using a correspondence with the multi-Regge limit. As a byproduct, we obtain a simple formula for the leading logs to all loop orders. Maslov indices are integers that appear in semiclassical wave functions and quantization conditions. They are often notoriously difficult to compute. We present methods of computing the Maslov index that rely only on typically elementary Poisson brackets and simple linear algebra. We also present a singular differential form, whose integral along a curve gives the Maslov index of that curve. The form is closed but not exact, and transforms by an exact differential under canonical transformations. We illustrate the method with the $6j$-symbol, which is important in angular momentum theory and in quantum gravity., Comment: 5 pages
