Agarwood is a highly sought-after resinous wood for use in medicine, incense, and perfume production. However, the process of agarwood formation is slow. In this study, the induction of agarwood formation in three-year-old Aquilaria sinensis "Qinan" trees through treatment with ethephon, hydrogen peroxide, sodium chloride, distilled water, and wounding was investigated. The results showed that the starch content significantly decreased and that the soluble sugar content significantly increased during the process of agarwood formation, with no significant difference between the different treatment groups. The net photosynthetic rate significantly decreased. Except for the sodium chloride treatment, the total antioxidant capacity and the contents of flavonoids and phenols significantly increased during the process of agarwood formation. The essential oil yield of the ethephon and hydrogen peroxide treatment groups was significantly higher than that of the other treatment groups, with the highest essential oil yield in the ethephon treatment group. Compared to the control group, salt treatment produced the lowest essential oil yield of agarwood. The results indicate that appropriate concentrations of ethephon and hydrogen peroxide can promote the formation of agarwood in A. sinensis "Qinan". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global warming has led to more frequent extreme weather events, such as heavy summer rains, in the Huang‐Huai‐Hai region. These events significantly impede the growth and development of waxy maize in the area and disrupt the stable progression of the industry. However, there is a lack of effective agricultural measures to mitigate the impact of waterlogging, and the underlying regulation mechanisms remain unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a two‐year experiment to assess whether exogenous EDAH (a mixture of ethephon and diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate (DA‐6), ethephon: DA‐6 = 27%: 3%) application during the waxy maize V6 stage, combined with 10 days of waterlogging treatment at the V6, VT and R2 growth stages. The results indicate that exogenous EDAH mitigates the adverse effects of waterlogging stress to a certain extent. It is noteworthy that exogenous EDAH increases the leaf area index and photosynthetic parameters of waxy maize, enhances the activity of catalase in ear leaves at the R3 stage, inhibits the accumulation of malondialdehyde and delays premature aging of plants. Furthermore, exogenous EDAH delays premature ripening of grains caused by waterlogging, increases the moisture content of fresh waxy maize grains during the fresh edible period, but does not effectively mitigate the yield losses caused by waterlogging. However, exogenous EDAH effectively improves grain quality under waterlogging stress, increasing the soluble sugar content and total protein content while reducing starch content, ultimately enhancing the edibility of fresh ears. Through TOPSIS comprehensive evaluation, it can be inferred that exogenous EDAH effectively mitigates the overall impact of waterlogging on waxy maize at both the V6 and VT stages. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Late‐ripening citrus plays an important role in the stability of the global citrus industry. However, the regreening phenomenon in Valencia oranges impacts the peel color and commercial value. Ethylene degreening is an effective technique to improve the color of citrus fruits, but this effect may be delayed in regreened oranges. To better clarify this phenomenon, plastid morphology, pigment and phytohormone content in ethephon‐degreened Midknight Valencia oranges harvested in different stages were evaluated.Results showed that in fruits harvested at the turning stage, ethephon degreening treatment induced a chloroplast‐to‐chromoplast transition, and chlorophyll degradation and carotenoid accumulation were accelerated. Conversely, in fruits harvested at the regreening stage, the changes in plastid morphology were minimal, with delayed changes in chlorophyll and carotenoids. Genes related to ethylene biosynthesis and signaling pathways supported these responses. Variations in endogenous auxin, jasmonic acid, abscisic acid and gibberellins could partially explain this phenomenon.The response of Midknight Valencia oranges to ethephon degreening was delayed in the regreening stage, possibly due to the dynamic variations in endogenous phytohormones. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. This study aimed to promote the synthesis of hispidin, hypholomine B and other phenolic compounds from Sanghuangporus vaninii to enhance the medicinal value, health-care functions, and market competitiveness of its products. To investigate the fermentation for the S.vaninii most widely sold and applied on the market, ethephon was added into liquid culture medium. It was found that the addition of ethephon could indeed promote the synthesis of hispidin, hypholomine B and other phenolic compounds from the liquid-fermented S.vaninii. The final concentration of ethephon in the culture medium was 2 mmol/L, the addition occurred at Day 0, and 1 mol/L Na2CO3 adjusted pH to the value before the addition. The average content of hispidin was calculated by its reference substances, which could be up to 3.17 times the liquid fermentation group in the ethephon fermentation group. The average relative content of hypholomine B was represented by the peak area in HPLC profiles, and the former could be up to 2.55 times the latter. In addition, the addition of ethephon increased the accumulation of other phenolic compounds. The total phenolic content in the extract of the ethephon fermentation group, the liquid fermentation group, and the fruiting body group were (3.76±0.11)%, (1.96±0.12)%, and (0.77±0.04)%, respectively. The in vitro activities evaluation was based on the IC50 value. The IC50 of the extracts from the ethephon fermentation group for the scavenging rate of DPPH free radicals and ABTS cationic radicals and for the inhibiting rate of α-glucosidase were 150.00 μg/mL, 106.46 μg/mL, and 16.08 μg/mL, respectively, which were lower than the extracts from the liquid fermentation group (170.61 μg/mL, 115.36 μg/mL, and 35.48 μg/mL) and the extracts from the fruiting body group (218.10 μg/mL, 130.51 μg/mL, and 56.83 μg/mL). Abstract Background Astragaloside IV is a main medicinal active ingredient in Astragalus membranaceus Bge. var. mongholicus (Bge.) Hsiao, which is also the key biomarker of A. membranaceus quality. Ethylene has been well-documented to involve in secondary metabolites biosynthesis in plants. Nevertheless, how ethylene regulates astragaloside IV biosynthesis in A. membranaceus is still unclear. Therefore, in the present study different dosages and time-dependent exogenous application of ethephon (Eth) were employed to analyze astragaloside IV accumulation and its biosynthesis genes expression level in hydroponically A. membranaceus. Results Exogenous 200 µmol·L− 1Eth supply is most significantly increased astragaloside IV contents in A. membranaceus when compared with non-Eth supply. After 12 h 200 µmol·L− 1 Eth treatment, the astragaloside IV contents reaching the highest content at 3 d Eth treatment(P ≤ 0.05). Moreover, After Eth treatment, all detected key genes involved in astragaloside IV synthesis were significant decrease at 3rd day(P ≤ 0.05). However, SE displayed a significant increase at the 3rd day under Eth treatment(P ≤ 0.05). Under Eth treatment, the expression level of FPS, HMGR, IDI, SS, and CYP93E3 exhibited significant negative correlations with astragaloside IV content, while expression level of SE displayed a significant positive correlation. Conclusions These findings suggest that exogenous Eth treatment can influence the synthesis of astragaloside IV by regulating the expression of FPS, HMGR, IDI, SS, CYP93E3 and SE. This study provides a theoretical basis for utilizing molecular strategies to enhance the quality of A. membranaceus.

Watermelon is a widely cultivated cucurbitaceous crop with economic and dietary significance. The plant's ability to reproduce effectively relies on the harmonious growth and maturation of both its male and female flowers. At the farm level, determining the exact amount of ethylene required to regulate the development and sexual expression of individual floral buds remains uncertain, despite the known influence of exogenously applied ethylene on these processes. The goal of the research was to explore how the ethephon doses influence vegetative characteristics, sex expression, and watermelon yield. The experiment, employing a one-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) comprising five treatments and four replications, was conducted in a farmer's field in Buttabari, Jhapa. Using R-stat software, the data were analyzed at a 5% level of significance. Treatment consisted of Ethephon with four doses namely; 100ppm, 200ppm, 300ppm, 400ppm, and a control. Ethephon application was done twice, once at the two true-leaf stages and another at four true-leaf stages. The study revealed that plant height decreased with ethephon compared to the control, reaching a minimum of 280.1 cm at 400 ppm and a maximum of 307.1 cm in the control. Additionally, the highest branch numbers were observed with ethephon at 200 ppm. The plot treated with 200ppm ethephon was found to be more effective than alternative doses at increasing the total number of female flowers, bearing 15.25 female flowers per plant. Control (166.50 per plant) and 400 ppm (150.00 per plant) had the highest and lowest male flower counts per plant, respectively. A maximum yield of 25.12 t/ha and a minimum yield of 19.1 t/ha were determined at 200 ppm and control, respectively. Hence, farmers are found to benefit from ethephon doses of 200 ppm.

Abstract Background Blueberry fruit exhibit atypical climacteric ripening with a non-auto-catalytic increase in ethylene coincident with initiation of ripening. Further, application of ethephon, an ethylene-releasing plant growth regulator, accelerates ripening by increasing the proportion of ripe (blue) fruit as compared to the control treatment. To investigate the mechanistic role of ethylene in regulating blueberry ripening, we performed transcriptome analysis on fruit treated with ethephon, an ethylene-releasing plant growth regulator. Results RNA-Sequencing was performed on two sets of rabbiteye blueberry (‘Powderblue’) fruit: (1) fruit from divergent developmental stages; and (2) fruit treated with ethephon, an ethylene-releasing compound. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from divergent developmental stages clustered into nine groups, among which cluster 1 displayed reduction in expression during ripening initiation and was enriched with photosynthesis related genes, while cluster 7 displayed increased expression during ripening and was enriched with aromatic-amino acid family catabolism genes, suggesting stimulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis. More DEGs were apparent at 1 day after ethephon treatment suggesting its early influence during ripening initiation. Overall, a higher number of genes were downregulated in response to ethylene. Many of these overlapped with cluster 1 genes, indicating that ethylene-mediated downregulation of photosynthesis is an important developmental event during the ripening transition. Analyses of DEGs in response to ethylene also indicated interplay among phytohormones. Ethylene positively regulated abscisic acid (ABA), negatively regulated jasmonates (JAs), and influenced auxin (IAA) metabolism and signaling genes. Phytohormone quantification supported these effects of ethylene, indicating coordination of blueberry fruit ripening by ethylene. Conclusion This study provides insights into the role of ethylene in blueberry fruit ripening. Ethylene initiates blueberry ripening by downregulating photosynthesis-related genes. Also, ethylene regulates phytohormone-metabolism and signaling related genes, increases ABA, and decreases JA concentrations. Together, these results indicate that interplay among multiple phytohormones regulates the progression of ripening, and that ethylene is an important coordinator of such interactions during blueberry fruit ripening.

SUMMARY: Apple rust is a serious fungal disease affecting Malus plants worldwide. Infection with the rust pathogen Gymnosporangium yamadae induces the accumulation of anthocyanins in Malus to resist rust disease. However, the mechanism of anthocyanin biosynthesis regulation in Malus against apple rust is still unclear. Here, we show that MpERF105 and MpNAC72 are key regulators of anthocyanin biosynthesis via the ethylene‐dependent pathway in M. 'Profusion' leaves under rust disease stress. Exogenous ethephon treatment promoted high expression of MpERF105 and MpNAC72 and anthocyanin accumulation in G. yamadae‐infected M. 'Profusion' leaves. Overexpression of MpERF105 increased the total anthocyanin content of Malus plant material and acted by positively regulating its target gene, MpMYB10b. MpNAC72 physically interacted with MpERF105 in vitro and in planta, and the two form a protein complex. Coexpression of the two leads to higher transcript levels of MpMYB10b and higher anthocyanin accumulation. In addition, overexpression of MpERF105 or MpNAC72 enhanced the resistance of M. 'Profusion' leaves to apple rust. In conclusion, our results elucidate the mechanism by which MpERF105 and MpNAC72 are induced by ethylene in G. yamadae‐infected M. 'Profusion' leaves and promote anthocyanin accumulation by mediating the positive regulation of MpMYB10b expression. Phytoregulators have been used as grapevine defoliants in cluster zones to manage and improve grape quality and production. The present study evaluated the effect of the phytoregulator ethephon on the grapevine defoliation of the cluster region, Botrytis bunch rot (BBR) epidemiology, and the viticultural performance of 'Cabernet Sauvignon', during the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 growing seasons, in the highland region of the Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil. Ethephon was applied in the bunch region of both sides of the grapevine vegetative canopy, at the phenological stage of beginning of ripening (BBCH-81) in five active ingredient doses (0 mg L-1 (control); 720 mg L-1; 1,440 mg L-1; 2,160 mg L-1; and 2,880 mg L-1), following a randomized block design with four replications and five plants per replication. The following parameters were evaluated: BBR epidemiology, vegetative, productive, and technological and phenolic maturation. The increasing ethephon doses significantly reduced the linear leaf drop and affected the technological and phenolic grape maturation parameters, improving the must pH, total polyphenols, color 420, 520, and 620 m, color intensity (°hue angle), and anthocyanin, and reducing the total solubre solids in the 'Cabernet Sauvignon' grapevine. However, this significant effect on the linear leaf drop and the technological and phenolic maturation parameters did not interfere with other vegetative, productive, and BBR epidemiology parameters evaluated in the edaphoclimatic conditions of the highland region of southern Brazil. Among the bioactive compounds, lipid-soluble tanshinone is present in Salvia miltiorrhiza, a medicinal plant species. While it is known that ethephon has the ability to inhibit the tanshinones biosynthesis in the S. miltiorrhiza hairy root, however the underlying regulatory mechanism remains obscure. In this study, using the transcriptome dataset of the S. miltiorrhiza hairy root induced by ethephon, an ethylene-responsive transcriptional factor EIN3-like 1 (SmEIL1) was identified. The SmEIL1 protein was found to be localized in the nuclei, and confirmed by the transient transformation observed in tobacco leaves. The overexpression of SmEIL1 was able to inhibit the tanshinones accumulation to a large degree, as well as down-regulate tanshinones biosynthetic genes including SmGGPPS1, SmHMGR1, SmHMGS1, SmCPS1, SmKSL1 and SmCYP76AH1. These are well recognized participants in the tanshinones biosynthesis pathway. Further investigation on the SmEIL1 was observed to inhibit the transcription of the CPS1 gene by the Dual-Luciferase (Dual-LUC) and yeast one-hybrid (Y1H) assays. The data in this work will be of value regarding the involvement of EILs in regulating the biosynthesis of tanshinones and lay the foundation for the metabolic engineering of bioactive ingredients in S. miltiorrhiza. Background: Sweet osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) is an ornamental evergreen tree species in China, whose flowers are sensitive to ethylene. The synthesis of ethylene is controlled by key enzymes and restriction enzymes, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid synthase (ACS) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO), which are encoded by multigene families. However, the key synthase responsible for ethylene regulation in O. fragrans is still unknown. Objective: This study aims to screen the key ethylene synthase genes of sweet osmanthus flowers in response to ethylene regulation. Methods: In this study, we used the ACO and ACS sequences of Arabidopsis thaliana to search for homologous genes in the O. fragrans petal transcriptome database. These genes were also analyzed bioinformatically. Finally, the expression levels of O. fragrans were compared before and after senescence, as well as after ethephon and silver nitrate treatments. Results: The results showed that there are five ACO genes and one ACS gene in O. fragrans transcriptome database, and the phylogenetic tree revealed that the proteins encoded by these genes had high homology to the ACS and ACO proteins in plants. Sequence alignment shows that the OfACO1-5 proteins have the 2OG-Fe(II) oxygenase domain, while OfACS1 contains seven conserved domains, as well as conserved amino acids in transaminases and glutamate residues related to substrate specificity. Expression analysis revealed that the expression levels of OfACS1 and OfACO1-5 were significantly higher at the early senescence stage compared to the full flowering stage. The transcripts of the OfACS1, OfACO2, and OfACO5 genes were upregulated by treatment with ethephon. However, out of these three genes, only OfACO2 was significantly downregulated by treatment with AgNO3. Conclusion: Our study found that OfACO2 is an important synthase gene in response to ethylene regulation in sweet osmanthus, which would provide valuable data for further investigation into the mechanisms of ethylene-induced senescence in sweet osmanthus flowers. Ethephon (ETH) is a plant growth regulator extensively utilized in agriculture, but its overuse is associated with several health issues. However, detecting ETH sensitively and easily in the field is challenging due to the complexity and time-consuming operation of current approaches. In this study, we synthesized aluminum-based metal-organic frameworks (CAU-1) as fluorescent probes for the detection of ETH in fruit. ETH exposure enhanced and shifted the light green fluorescence of CAU-1 to blue through high absorption of phosphate by electrostatic attraction. We observed a linear correlation between fluorescent intensity and ETH concentration ranging from 2 mg/L to 400 mg/L, with the lowest detection limit at 1 mg/L. This fluorescent analysis exhibited good selectivity towards ETH. To facilitate easy identification of samples in the field, we designed a fluorescent paper-based platform with a logic gate operation, allowing visual distinction of samples containing ETH. We applied this platform to monitor ETH in various fruits, including apples, pears, and tomatoes, through fluorescent spectrum, and visual detection. The platform offered simplicity, speed, ease of use and sensitivity, providing a promising future for ETH detection in agriculture.

Abstract Nutrient leaching is a major reason for fresh and ground water contamination. Menthol is the major bioactive ingredient of Mentha arvensis L. and one of the most traded products of global essential oil market. The indigenous production of menthol crystals in developing countries of the world can prove to be the backbone for local growers and poor farmers. Therefore, present research was designed to check the effects of nano-structured plant growth regulators (PGRs) (28-homobrassinolide and ethephon) with reduced leaching potentials on the essential oil and menthol (%) of Mentha arvensis L. The prepared nano-formulations were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), Differential scanning colorimetry-thermal gravimetric analysis (DSC-TGA), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and Zeta potential and Zeta size analysis. The menthol (%) was determined by modified spectrophotometric and gas chromatographic (GC) method. The highest essential oil (%) was obtained by the application of 28-homobrassinolide-Zn-NPs-L-II (0.92 ± 0.09%) and ethephon-Ca-NPs-L-III (0.91 ± 0.05%) as compared to the control (0.65 ± 0.03%) and blank (0.62 ± 0.09%). The highest menthol (%) was obtained by applying 28-homobrassinolide-Ca-NPs-L-I (80.06 ± 0.07%), 28-homobrassinolide-Ca-NPs-L-II (80.48 ± 0.09%) and 28-homobrassinolide-Ca-NPs-L-III (80.84 ± 0.11%) and ethephon-Ca-NPs-L-III (81.53 ± 0.17%) and ethephon-Zn-NPs-L-II (81.93 ± 0.26%) as compared to control (67.19 ± 0.14%) and blank (63.93 ± 0.17%).

Abstract R2R3-MYB transcription factors (TFs) are known to play a key role in regulating the expression of structural genes involved in plant flavonoid biosynthesis. However, the regulatory networks and related genes controlling isoflavonoid biosynthesis in soybean are poorly understood. We previously reported that ethephon application increases the production of isoflavonoids in soybean leaves. In this study, we attempted to identify a potential regulatory gene that positively controls isoflavonoid production in response to ethephon treatment in soybean (Glycine max L.). RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) revealed that ethephon application led to the upregulation of 22 genes, including the genes for R2R3-MYB TFs, related to isoflavonoid biosynthesis in soybean plants. Ethephon treatment highly induced the expression of GmMYB108, and its expression was exclusively enriched in flowers as determined using in silico and real-time quantitative PCR analyses. Furthermore, GmMYB108 overexpression resulted in an intense accumulation of anthocyanins as well as total flavonoid production in the leaf tissues of transgenic Arabidopsis plants. In addition, GmMYB108 overexpression increased the transcript levels of several genes involved in the biosynthesis of anthocyanins and their regulatory pathways in Arabidopsis. These results suggest that GmMYB108 is a potential positive regulator of the biosynthesis of flavonoids and anthocyanins in soybean flowers.

Abstract Background Papaya (Carica papaya) is an economically important fruit cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions of China. However, the rapid softening rate after postharvest leads to a short shelf-life and considerable economic losses. Accordingly, understanding the mechanisms underlying fruit postharvest softening will be a reasonable way to maintain fruit quality and extend its shelf-life. Results Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are conserved and play essential roles in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the MAPK family remain poorly studied in papaya. Here, a total of nine putative CpMAPK members were identified within papaya genome, and a comprehensive genome-wide characterization of the CpMAPKs was performed, including evolutionary relationships, conserved domains, gene structures, chromosomal locations, cis-regulatory elements and expression profiles in response to phytohormone and antioxidant organic compound treatments during fruit postharvest ripening. Our findings showed that nearly all CpMAPKs harbored the conserved P-loop, C-loop and activation loop domains. Phylogenetic analysis showed that CpMAPK members could be categorized into four groups (A-D), with the members within the same groups displaying high similarity in protein domains and intron–exon organizations. Moreover, a number of cis-acting elements related to hormone signaling, circadian rhythm, or low-temperature stresses were identified in the promoters of CpMAPKs. Notably, gene expression profiles demonstrated that CpMAPKs exhibited various responses to 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon), 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and the combined ascorbic acid (AsA) and chitosan (CTS) treatments during papaya postharvest ripening. Among them, both CpMAPK9 and CpMAPK20 displayed significant induction in papaya flesh by ethephon treatment, and were pronounced inhibition after AsA and CTS treatments at 16 d compared to those of natural ripening control, suggesting that they potentially involve in fruit postharvest ripening through ethylene signaling pathway or modulating cell wall metabolism. Conclusion This study will provide some valuable insights into future functional characterization of CpMAPKs, and hold great potential for further understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying papaya fruit postharvest ripening.

Summary: High‐affinity K+ (HAK) transporters play essential roles in facilitating root K+ uptake in higher plants. Our previous studies revealed that GhHAK5a, a member of the HAK family, is crucial for K+ uptake in upland cotton. Nevertheless, the precise regulatory mechanism governing the expression of GhHAK5a remains unclear.The yeast one‐hybrid screening was performed to identify the transcription factors responsible for regulating GhHAK5a, and ethylene response factor 9 (GhERF9) was identified as a potential candidate.Subsequent dual‐luciferase and electrophoretic mobility shift assays confirmed that GhERF9 binds directly to the GhHAK5a promoter, thereby activating its expression. Silencing of GhERF9 decreased the expression of GhHAK5a and exacerbated K+ deficiency symptoms in leaves, also decreased K+ uptake rate and K+ content in roots. Additionally, it was observed that the application of ethephon (an ethylene‐releasing reagent) resulted in a significant upregulation of GhERF9 and GhHAK5a, accompanied by an increased rate of K+ uptake. Expectedly, GhEIN3b and GhEIL3c, the two key components involved in ethylene signaling, bind directly to the GhERF9 promoter.These findings provide valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the expression of GhHAK5a and ethylene‐mediated K+ uptake and suggest a potential strategy to genetically enhance cotton K+ uptake by exploiting the EIN3/EILs‐ERF9‐HAK5 module. Nutrient leaching is a major reason for fresh and ground water contamination. Menthol is the major bioactive ingredient of Mentha arvensis L. and one of the most traded products of global essential oil market. The indigenous production of menthol crystals in developing countries of the world can prove to be the backbone for local growers and poor farmers. Therefore, present research was designed to check the effects of nano-structured plant growth regulators (PGRs) (28-homobrassinolide and ethephon) with reduced leaching potentials on the essential oil and menthol (%) of Mentha arvensis L. The prepared nano-formulations were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), Differential scanning colorimetry-thermal gravimetric analysis (DSC-TGA), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and Zeta potential and Zeta size analysis. The menthol (%) was determined by modified spectrophotometric and gas chromatographic (GC) method. The highest essential oil (%) was obtained by the application of 28-homobrassinolide-Zn-NPs-L-II (0.92 ± 0.09%) and ethephon-Ca-NPs-L-III (0.91 ± 0.05%) as compared to the control (0.65 ± 0.03%) and blank (0.62 ± 0.09%). The highest menthol (%) was obtained by applying 28-homobrassinolide-Ca-NPs-L-I (80.06 ± 0.07%), 28-homobrassinolide-Ca-NPs-L-II (80.48 ± 0.09%) and 28-homobrassinolide-Ca-NPs-L-III (80.84 ± 0.11%) and ethephon-Ca-NPs-L-III (81.53 ± 0.17%) and ethephon-Zn-NPs-L-II (81.93 ± 0.26%) as compared to control (67.19 ± 0.14%) and blank (63.93 ± 0.17%). R2R3-MYB transcription factors (TFs) are known to play a key role in regulating the expression of structural genes involved in plant flavonoid biosynthesis. However, the regulatory networks and related genes controlling isoflavonoid biosynthesis in soybean are poorly understood. We previously reported that ethephon application increases the production of isoflavonoids in soybean leaves. In this study, we attempted to identify a potential regulatory gene that positively controls isoflavonoid production in response to ethephon treatment in soybean (Glycine max L.). RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) revealed that ethephon application led to the upregulation of 22 genes, including the genes for R2R3-MYB TFs, related to isoflavonoid biosynthesis in soybean plants. Ethephon treatment highly induced the expression of GmMYB108, and its expression was exclusively enriched in flowers as determined using in silico and real-time quantitative PCR analyses. Furthermore, GmMYB108 overexpression resulted in an intense accumulation of anthocyanins as well as total flavonoid production in the leaf tissues of transgenic Arabidopsis plants. In addition, GmMYB108 overexpression increased the transcript levels of several genes involved in the biosynthesis of anthocyanins and their regulatory pathways in Arabidopsis. Introduction: Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen, known as fragrant rosewood, is a rare and endangered tree species. Studies have shown that plant growth regulators can effectively promote heartwood formation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ethephon (ETH) on heartwood formation and the influence of ethephon and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the physiological characteristics in D. odorifera. Methods: D. odorifera branches underwent treatment with 2.5% plant growth regulators, including ETH, jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), abscisic acid (ABA), H2O2, and inhibitors such as ascorbic acid (AsA) to inhibit H2O2 synthesis, and (S) -trans 2-amino-4 - (2-aminoethoxy) -3-butene (AVG) to inhibit ethylene synthesis. After a 14-day period, we conducted an analysis to evaluate the impact of these plant growth regulators on elongation distance, vessel occlusion percentage, and trans-nerol content. Additionally, the effects of ETH and H2O2 on endogenous plant hormones, H2O2 content, soluble protein content, and enzyme activity were investigated within 0-48 h of treatment. Results: After treatment with ETH for 14 days, the extension distance of the heartwood material was 15 cm, while the trans-nerolol content was 15 times that of the ABA group. ETH and H2O2 promoted endogenous ethylene synthesis; Ethylene content peaked at 6 and 18 h. The peak ethylene content in the ETH group was 68.07%, 12.89%, and 20.87% higher than the initial value of the H2O2 group and ddH2O group, respectively, and 29.64% higher than that in the AVG group. The soluble protein content and activity of related enzymes were significantly increased following ETH treatment. Discussion: ETH exhibited the most impact on heartwood formation while not hindering tree growth. This treatment effectively triggered the production of endogenous ethylene in plants and enhanced the activity of essential enzymes involved in heartwood formation. Ethylene plays a role of gas hormone generated in response to varied stress in plant cells. In Hevea brasiliensis, periodic ethephon stimulation of tapped trees generates a dilution of the latex, a lower Total Solid Content (TSC) and a lower viscosity, resulting in a longer duration of the latex flow and a higher production of the following tappings. It also increases latex regeneration between two subsequent tappings. These mechanisms induce important changes in the laticifer metabolism and in the cellular genetic expression. Ethephon stimulation has become a major tool for tapping management. However, its excessive use can increase the susceptibility of trees to tapping panel dryness (TPD). A newly formulated ethephon water-based stimulant (RRIM HYDROBESTTM, or RHB) is studied. A field trial was set with the clone RRIM 3001, comparing 4 stimulant treatments: ns = non-stimulated = control, ET = Ethephon 5%, MTX = MORTEX 5%, and RHB = RRIM HYDROBEST™ 5%. The production per tree was higher for MTX than for ns and ET, with RHB intermediate between both groups. The dry cut length (DCL) percentage of RHB was lower than that of ns, ET and MTX. Concerning the sucrose content of the latex measured in high-yielding and low-yielding periods, for the control ns alone, sucrose content in the low-yielding period was higher than that in the high-yielding period. Concerning the RHB treatment, in comparison with the control, 75 differentially expressed transcription factors were found, with most of them members of the ERF family. These results are discussed. Zoysia japonica (Zoysia japonica Steud.) is a kind of warm-season turfgrass with many excellent characteristics. However, the shorter green period and longer dormancy caused by cold stress in late autumn and winter are the most limiting factors affecting its application. A previous transcriptome analysis revealed that ethephon regulated genes in chlorophyll metabolism in Zoysia japonica under cold stress. Further experimental data are necessary to understand the effect and underlying mechanism of ethephon in regulating the cold tolerance of Zoysia japonica. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ethephon by measuring the enzyme activity, intermediates content, and gene expression related to ethylene biosynthesis, signaling, and chlorophyll metabolism. In addition, the ethylene production rate, chlorophyll content, and chlorophyll a/b ratio were analyzed. The results showed that ethephon application in a proper concentration inhibited endogenous ethylene biosynthesis, but eventually promoted the ethylene production rate due to its ethylene-releasing nature. Ethephon could promote chlorophyll content and improve plant growth in Zoysia japonica under cold-stressed conditions. In conclusion, ethephon plays a positive role in releasing ethylene and maintaining the chlorophyll content in Zoysia japonica both under non-stressed and cold-stressed conditions. Background: Papaya (Carica papaya) is an economically important fruit cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions of China. However, the rapid softening rate after postharvest leads to a short shelf-life and considerable economic losses. Accordingly, understanding the mechanisms underlying fruit postharvest softening will be a reasonable way to maintain fruit quality and extend its shelf-life. Results: Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are conserved and play essential roles in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the MAPK family remain poorly studied in papaya. Here, a total of nine putative CpMAPK members were identified within papaya genome, and a comprehensive genome-wide characterization of the CpMAPKs was performed, including evolutionary relationships, conserved domains, gene structures, chromosomal locations, cis-regulatory elements and expression profiles in response to phytohormone and antioxidant organic compound treatments during fruit postharvest ripening. Our findings showed that nearly all CpMAPKs harbored the conserved P-loop, C-loop and activation loop domains. Phylogenetic analysis showed that CpMAPK members could be categorized into four groups (A-D), with the members within the same groups displaying high similarity in protein domains and intron–exon organizations. Moreover, a number of cis-acting elements related to hormone signaling, circadian rhythm, or low-temperature stresses were identified in the promoters of CpMAPKs. Notably, gene expression profiles demonstrated that CpMAPKs exhibited various responses to 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon), 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and the combined ascorbic acid (AsA) and chitosan (CTS) treatments during papaya postharvest ripening. Among them, both CpMAPK9 and CpMAPK20 displayed significant induction in papaya flesh by ethephon treatment, and were pronounced inhibition after AsA and CTS treatments at 16 d compared to those of natural ripening control, suggesting that they potentially involve in fruit postharvest ripening through ethylene signaling pathway or modulating cell wall metabolism. Ethephon, a widely used growth regulator in fruits and vegetables, requires careful monitoring because of its toxicity. However, as far as we know, only two works are found in the literature regarding surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) ethephon detection. Indeed, obtaining the SERS signal revealed to be challenging. Therefore, we have evaluated the SERS signal of ethephon using theoretical (as density functional theory and charge‐assisted fragment interaction) and experimental approaches, addressing this limited literature knowledge. Theoretical Raman spectra with Ag or Au atoms at reactive sites exhibited enhanced ethephon SERS signal via AgCl bonding, consistent with the experimental data. Multiple experimental procedures were employed to obtain the SERS signal, including pH variations, salt addition, excitation laser lines, time dependency, and different SERS substrates (Ag colloid and Ag island films). Salt addition (NaCl) improved SERS signal, correlating with Ag colloid aggregation. Analysis in Ag colloid showed the pH 7.0 as optimal for ethephon detection, using freshly prepared Ag colloid + ethephon dispersion with ethephon powder being directly dissolved into Ag colloid. The production of 'Ratuni UNPAD' cayenne pepper can be increased using organic chicken manure. However, the application of ethephon is needed during fertilization due to the significantly slow flower initiation. Therefore, this study aims to determine the interaction between chicken manure and ethephon on the growth, yield, and quality of the 'Ratuni UNPAD' cayenne pepper. Planting is carried out 829 meters above sea level (masl), and a factorial randomized block experimental design comprises 2 factors with 3 replications. The first factor is the dose of chicken manure (10, 20, 30, and 40 t/ha), while the second is the ethephon concentration (0, 500, 1000, and 1500 ppm). The results showed no interaction between poultry manure and ethephon on the growth, yield, and quality of the 'Ratuni UNPAD' cayenne pepper. According to the doses of chicken manure, 40 t/ha significantly affects the flower initiation, fruit number, weight, length, and diameter, as well as capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin. The 30 t/ha shows the highest value for the number of leaves and productive branches, while 20 tons dose/ha influences flavonoids, phenolics, and total carotenoids. Seed is one of the most expensive costs in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) production, and the use of high‐quality seed is important to provide the greatest yield potential. Physiological seed quality, represented by a combination of germination, vigor, desiccation tolerance, and longevity, is progressively acquired during seed formation. When all components reach their maximum, seeds achieve the highest physiological quality. The objectives of this study were to identify the acquisition pattern of the physiological components of seed quality, to determine the timing in which the maximum physiological quality is achieved during seed formation, and to define the timing in which seeds acquire and further break primary dormancy in peanut. A 3‐year field study was conducted using the cultivar Georgia‐06G. Plants were inverted when growing degree days reached 2500 for all fields, and a maturity board profile was used to classify the pods into the maturity classes. Seeds were split into two groups, treated and non‐treated, with ethephon to break potential primary dormancy. Water content, germination, vigor, desiccation tolerance, and longevity were tested in the seeds. Seed mass maturity was reached in the "orange" class. Maximum germination and vigor were achieved between "brown 1" and "brown 2". Primary dormancy was acquired between "orange" and "brown 1" and broken after artificial drying. Maximum desiccation tolerance was observed in "brown 1", whereas maximum longevity was achieved only in "black 2". Considering all physiological quality components, peanut seeds achieved the maximum physiological quality between "brown 1" and "brown 2". Exogenous ethylene is commonly utilized to initiate flower induction in pineapple (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.). However, the molecular mechanisms and metabolic changes involved are not well understood. In this study, we explored the genetic network and metabolic shifts in the 'Comte de Paris' pineapple variety during ethylene-induced flowering. This was achieved through an integrative analysis of metabolome and transcriptome profiles at vegetative shoot apexes (0 d after ethephon treatment named BL_0d), the stage of bract primordia (8 d after ethephon treatment named BL_8d), stage of flower primordia (18 d after ethephon treatment named BL_18d), and the stage of stopped floret differentiation (34 d after ethephon treatment named BL_34d). We isolated and identified 804 metabolites in the pineapple shoot apex and inflorescence, categorized into 24 classes. Notably, 29, 31, and 46 metabolites showed significant changes from BL_0d to BL_8d, BL_8d to BL_18d, and BL_18d to BL_34d, respectively. A marked decrease in indole was observed, suggesting its role as a characteristic metabolite during flower induction. Transcriptomic analysis revealed 956, 1768, and 4483 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for BL_0d vs. BL_8d, BL_8d vs. BL_18d, and BL_18d vs. BL_34d, respectively. These DEGs were significantly enriched in carbohydrate metabolism and hormone signaling pathways, indicating their potential involvement in flower induction. Integrating metabolomic and transcriptomic data, we identified several candidate genes, such as Agamous-Like9 (AGL9), Ethylene Insensitive 3-like (ETIL3), Apetala2 (AP2), AP2-like ethylene-responsive transcription factor ANT (ANT), and Sucrose synthase 2 (SS2), that play potentially crucial roles in ethylene-induced flower induction in pineapple. We also established a regulatory network for pineapple flower induction, correlating metabolites and DEGs, based on the Arabidopsis thaliana pathway as a reference. A major portion of maize is produced under rainfed conditions in the tropics with relatively poor yield because of the unpredictable and irregular distribution of seasonal rainfall, as well as a decline in pre-rainy season rainfall due to climate change, so identification of sustainable production options is utmost needed. Thus, the present studies were conducted in a greenhouse (GH) to ascertain the water stress-tolerant traits of maize and at the field level in the tropical environment of Thailand to see the stimulating possibility of the ascertained traits in a locally popular cultivar using ethephon. Depending on tolerance level, three maize genotypes (Suwan 2301 > Suwan 4452 > S 7328) were tested under different water conditions—well-watered, short-term, and long-term water stress—in the GH. At the field level, the locally popular maize cultivar Suwan 5819 was examined with six ethephon levels (doses in g a.i. ha−1 of ethephon, i.e., T1, 281 at V6 stage; T2, 281 at V6 + 281 at V10 stage; T3, 281 at V10 stage; T4, 562 at V6 stage; T5, 562 at V6 + 562 at V10 stage; T6, 562 at V10 stage) against no ethephon application (T0) under rainfed conditions. Maize suffered from the scarcity of sufficient rainfall during 26–39 days after planting (DAP) and 43–63 DAP in the field. The yield index (YI) was identified from biplot analysis as one of the suitable standards for drought tolerance checks for maize at GH as well as at field level in the tropics. The YI value of observed agro-physio-biochemical traits of maize in GH showed that relative water content (RWC, 1.23), stem base diameter (SBD, 1.21), total soluble sugar (TSS, 1.15), proline (Pr, 1.13), aboveground plant biomass (APB, 1.13), root weight (RW, 1.13), relative growth rate (RGR, 1.15), specific leaf weight (SLW, 1.12), and net assimilation rate (NAR, 1.08) were the most desirable. Efforts were made to stimulate these traits under water stress at the field level. Ethephon application as T1 helped to gain higher kernel yield (KY) (5.26 t ha−1) with the support of higher RWC (90.38%), proline (24.79 µmol g−1 FW), TSS (1629 mg g−1 FW), SBD (24.49 mm), APB (271.34 g plant−1), SLW (51.71 g m−2), RGR (25.26 mg plant−1 day−1), and NAR (0.91 mg cm−2 day−1) compared to others, especially no ethephon application. Furthermore, the attributes SLW, SBD, Pr, heat utilization efficiency (HUE), 100-kernel weight, TSS, electrolyte leakage, and lodging percentage showed a substantial direct effect and significant correlation with KY. Aside from higher KY, ethephon application as T1 tactics resulted in higher values of energy efficiency (1.66), HUE (2.99 kg ha−1 °C days−1), gross margin (682.02 USD ha−1), MBCR (3.32), and C absorption (6.19 t C ha−1), indicating that this practice may be a good option for maize sustainable production under rainfed conditions. Seed germination in Melocactus and other cactus species is hampered by dormancy. However, most studies failed to achieve high seed-germination rates, suggesting a complex mechanism of dormancy in Cactaceae. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate whether factors such as light and phytoregulators overcome the dormancy in the seeds of the friar's crown cactus (Melocactus zehntneri). Two consecutive experimental sets were designed: one with seed germination under filter paper conditions and different wavelengths and Photosynthetically Photon Flux Densities (PPFDs); and one in vitro experiment using a culture medium to evaluate the influence of different phytoregulators, such as gibberellic acid (GA3), benzylaminopurine (BAP) and ethephon (ET), both in the germination of seeds of M. zehntneri. Seeds of M. zehntneri are positive photoblastic. Red light and gradual increases in PPFD resulted in the highest germination rates (60.8–61.7%) and germination speed index (4.4–4.5). In vitro seeding in culture media increased the germination percentage to 76% in control without phytoregulators. Ethephon showed a major effect in releasing the germination of dormant seeds of M. zehntneri, totaling 98% of seeds germinated under in vitro conditions, while GA3 and BAP showed minor or no effect on germination. Selecting the best resin tapping method and stimulant paste in the resin tapping process is crucial. In timber-oriented rainy Atlantic pine forests of north-west Spain, the interest in resin tapping is raising but information on the best tapping methods and pastes is still lacking. In this study, an appropriate experimental design used on five representative plots of Pinus pinaster, allowed us to explore the resin productive differences between two tapping methods (traditional Spanish method and circular groove) and three stimulant treatments (control, Ethephon and ASACIF). The use of a standardized measure of resin yield allowed to adequately compare methods differing in groove length. Results indicated that the standard resin yield was 1.43 times greater with the traditional method than with the circular groove method. The two stimulant pastes drastically increased resin yield (up to sixfold) in all sites and for all tapping methods. The effectiveness of the paste was also influenced by the tapping method, obtaining greater increases in resin yield after the application of stimulant paste in trees with the circular groove method. Resin yield was only slightly related to the dasometric variables and varied among test sites when no pastes were used, but differences among sites disappeared when stimulant pastes were used. Ramie (Boehmeria nivea [L.] Gaud.), a nutritious animal feed, is rich in protein and produces a variety of secondary metabolites that increase its palatability and functional composition. Ethylene (ETH) is an important plant hormone that regulates the growth and development of various crops. In this study, we investigated the impact of ETH sprays on the growth and metabolism of forage ramie. We explored the mechanism of ETH regulation on the growth and secondary metabolites of forage ramie using transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. Spraying ramie with ETH elevated the contents of flavonoids and chlorogenic acid and decreased the lignin content in the leaves and stems. A total of 1076 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 51 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) were identified in the leaves, and 344 DEGs and 55 DEMs were identified in the stems. The DEGs that affect phenylpropanoid metabolism, including BGLU41, LCT, PER63, PER42, PER12, PER10, POD, BAHD1, SHT, and At4g26220 were significantly upregulated in the leaves. Ethylene sprays downregulated tyrosine and chlorogenic acid (3-O-caffeoylquinic acid) in the leaves, but lignin biosynthesis HCT genes, including ACT, BAHD1, and SHT, were up- and downregulated. These changes in expression may ultimately reduce lignin biosynthesis. In addition, the upregulation of caffeoyl CoA-O-methyltransferase (CCoAOMT) may have increased the abundance of its flavonoids. Ethylene significantly downregulated metabolites, affecting phenylpropanoid metabolism in the stems. The differential 4CL and HCT metabolites were downregulated, namely, phenylalanine and tyrosine. Additionally, ETH upregulated 2-hydroxycinnamic acid and the cinnamyl hydroxyl derivatives (caffeic acid and p-coumaric acid). Cinnamic acid is a crucial intermediate in the shikimic acid pathway, which serves as a precursor for the biosynthesis of flavonoids and lignin. The ETH-decreased gene expression and metabolite alteration reduced the lignin levels in the stem. Moreover, the HCT downregulation may explain the inhibited lignin biosynthesis to promote flavonoid biosynthesis. In conclusion, external ETH application can effectively reduce lignin contents and increase the secondary metabolites of ramie without affecting its growth and development. Maize, a major food source for the world's tropical regions, is often impaired by droughts under a changing climate, which creates the importance of making efforts to improve the tolerance characteristics of maize under field conditions. The experiment was conducted during the dry season of the 2020–2021 period to investigate the stimulatory effects of plant growth regulator (PGR) ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) on the morpho-physio-biochemical traits of maize and to identify suitable application approaches for efficient production under water stress. The factorial randomized complete block design was followed for the present experiment. Ethephon was applied at the vegetative 6 leaves (V6) and/or 10 leaves (V10) stages. Seven application approaches (doses in g a.i. ha−1) of ethephon, i.e., 281 at the V6 stage (E1), 281 at the V6 stage + 281 at the V10 stage (E2), 281 at the V10 stage (E3), 562 at the V6 stage (E4), 562 at the V6 stage + 562 at the V10 stage (E5), 562 at the V10 stage (E6), and no ethephon (E7), were used for maize production. Another factor was that three water levels were used, i.e., well-watered conditions (watering every week) (W1), short water stress (no watering during 48–69 days after planting) (W2), and prolonged water stress (no watering during 48–83 days after planting) (W3). Water stress negatively affected most of the morpho-physiological traits, and in W2 and W3 conditions, the grain yield was significantly lower, i.e., 4.82 and 4.27 t ha−1, respectively, compared to W1 (5.71 t ha−1). The plant height and leaf area index at the reproductive milk stage of maize (R3) were significantly reduced by all approaches of ethephon application compared to no ethephon. However, across the water levels, E3 performed better and produced a higher grain yield (5.11 t ha−1), which was mostly seen by a higher 100-grain weight (24.52 g) and a slightly higher grain number per plant (356.12). It was also positively supported by most of the physiological and biochemical traits, as they were especially higher in the relative growth rate (25.73 mg plant−1 day−1), net assimilation rate (0.79 mg cm−2 day−1) at V6-R3, heat use efficiency (3.39 kg ha−1 °C days−1), electrolyte leakage (5.69%), and proline (28.78 µmol g−1 FW). These traits, under prolonged stress, also gave the maximum drought tolerance index by E3, i.e., the relative growth rate (1.00) and net assimilation rate (1.00) at V6 to R3, heat use efficiency (1.06), relative water content (1.00), electrolyte leakage (1.65), proline (1.88), 100-grain weight (1.01), grain yield (1.11), and water productivity (1.53). A path analysis showed that the shoot weight at R3 (1.00), the stem diameter at the R3 stage (1.00), net assimilation rate (0.95), relative water content (0.95), 100-grain weight (0.90), grain number (0.76), proline (0.75), SPAD value (0.71), and total soluble sugar (0.57) were highly positive, and electrolyte leakage (−0.84) was negatively correlated with the grain yield under prolonged water stress. The maximum positive direct effect on the grain yield was found in the shoot weight (1.05), net assimilation rate (0.68), leaf area index at R3 (0.45), SPAD (0.22), and electrolyte leakage (0.21). The ethephon application as the E3 approach was more efficient in both short and prolonged stress, especially under prolonged stress, as it showed a higher energy use efficiency (1.55) and less CO2-eq emission (3603.69) compared to the other approaches of ethephon. The subsequent efficient ethephon approaches were E1 under short water stress, E6 under prolonged water stress, where E5 performed minimally, and no application of ethephon, which exhibited the worst efficiency under water stress. In this study, the high isoflavone-enriched soy leaves (IESLs) were manufactured by treating with the chemical inducer ethephon, a plant growth regulator, to confirm changes in the properties of soy leaves (SLs), which are underutilized. Ethephon treatment concentrations consisted of 0 (SL1), 150 (SL2), and 300 (SL3) μg/mL. The composition analysis and physiological activity were conducted according to the ethephon treatment concentration of SLs. There was no significant difference in the proximate composition and fatty acids, except for an increase with increasing ethephon treatment concentrations. Depending on the ethephon treatment concentration, free amino acids increased to 1413.0, 1569.8, and 2100.4 mg/100 g, and water-soluble vitamins increased to 246.7, 244.7, and 501.6 mg/100 g. In particular, the functional substance isoflavone increased significantly to 1430.11, 7806.42, and 14,968.00 μg/g. Through this study, it was confirmed that the nutritional components and isoflavones of SLs increased according to the ethephon treatment concentration, a chemical inducer treatment agent. The Brazilian production of Ficus carica L., particularly 'Roxo de Valinhos' figs variety, is predominantly concentrated from January to March. The ethylene utilization to anticipate and standardize fig harvesting has the potential to alter the supply and improve economic results. The objective of this study was to establish a growth curve and evaluate the effect of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon) on the maturation and quality of 'Roxo de Valinhos' figs at different periods, measured in days after effective fruit set (DAEFS). The study was divided into two concurrent experiments conducted in a commercial orchard in Linha Jacutinga, a village in São Miguel do Oeste, SC, during the 2020/2021 harvest. In each experiment was used randomized block design, with eight replications (blocks), with the plant as the block and two basal fruits of a branch as the experimental unit. Experiment I consisted of characterizing the natural development of figs at different stages. The analyses of pseudo-fruits included measurements of mass, diameter, length, color, texture, soluble solids, and titratable acidity. Experiment II consisted of an application of ethephon 500 µL L-1 at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 DAEFS. The control treatment was natural development without any applications. Harvesting took place when the figs showed the presence of purple coloration, indicating ripeness. The figs were evaluated for their physical and chemical attributes. The growth behavior followed a double-sigmoid curve with three stages of development. The applications of ethephon at 500 µL L-1 did not promote the desired responses for artificial maturation induction until 50 DAEFS. Satisfactory results began at 60 DAEFS, with a diameter of = 39.8 mm, and at 70 DAEFS, with a diameter of = 38.1 mm. However, 95% of desirable responses for maturation by artificial induction occurred at 80 DAEFS when figs had an average diameter of 37.3 ± 1.8 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to climate change in recent years, there has been an increasing water deficit during the winter wheat growing period due to reduce rivers water and low precipitation. Consequently, there is increasing thoughts to grow crops depending on well water under desert conditions were crops management completely different. Field experiment was conducted in winter session of 2021-2022. The aim was to evaluate the production of wheat cultivars grown under desert condition at Alahais south of Basrah, Iraq (30°46'89.07"N 46°99'36.77"E). Moreover, two seeding rate and two levels of ethephon have been applied. The experiment include three factors, eleven wheat cultivars, two rate of seeding (140 and 200 kg ha-1 ) and two concentration of ethephon (0 and 2.25 ml l-1 ). Factorial experiment was applied (11x2x2) according to randomized complete block design with three replicates. The area of experimental unit was 4x3 m2 . The results revealed that, wheat varieties differed significantly in all most traits measured. Alrasheed variety produced higher grain yield, higher grains spike-1 and 1000 grain weight by 4.077 t ha-1, 56.18 grains spikes-1, and 43.17 g respectively. Moreover, increased seeding rate from 100 to 200 kg ha-1 lead to increase spike m-2 and grain yield by 12.53% and 11.59% respectively. In addition foliar application of ethephon lead to enhance spike m-2, grains spike-1 and grain yield by 5.31%, 6.81% and 11.15% respectively. For the interaction effect, the results revealed that, the increased of seeding rate improved grain yield for all wheat varieties. Moreover, the application of ethephon improved grain yield for all wheat varieties. Alrasheed variety under 140 and 200 kg ha-1 seeding rate with foliar application of 2.25 ml l -1 ethephon gave highest grain yield by 4.321 and 4.235 t ha-1 respectively. In addition Alrasheed under seeding rate of 200 kg ha-1 and ethephon foliar application produced highest biological yield by 14.261 t ha-1 . A field experiment was performed at the Karma Ali site, affiliated with the Agricultural Research Station of the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, located in Basra Governorate. An experiment was conducted in the winter of 2021-2022 to examine the impact of four nitrogen fertilizer concentrations (N0, N1, N2, and N3) and three concentrations of Ethephon (750 and 1500 microliters L-1) on the growth characteristics and yield of rape (Brassica napus L. Var. Pactol). The nitrogen levels tested were as follows: 0, 100, 200, and 300 kg N ha--1. It was designed using randomized complete blocks (RCBD) in three replications using the factorial experimental method. For both seasons, the N3 fertilizer level substantially improved the following parameters: net photosynthesis, crop growth rate, leaf area, and leaf area index. In the second season, as for seed yield, the N3 level exceeded (3.24 tons ha-1), and it did not. In the first season, the N3 level (2.71 tons ha-1) differs significantly from the N2 level (2.60 tons ha-1). The findings also indicated that foliar spray treatments containing varying concentrations of Ethephon had a significant impact on the majority of the traits examined, as evidenced by the higher average E2 concentration for the majority of the traits. Yield and development over two seasons. The interaction between nitrogen and Ethephon was high in most traits except leaf area, leaf area index, and net photosynthesis for the first season. The use of ethephon, designed to stimulate nut detachment, initiates the release of ethylene, a well-established regulator of postharvest shelf-life in various agricultural products. This study aimed to assess the impact of ethephon application on individual fatty acids and dietary indicators in two macadamia nut cultivars, namely '788' and 'Beaumont,' during postharvest storage. Nuts that naturally abscised and those detached through ethephon treatment were divided into two groups: the ethylene-treated group (ED) and the control group (CD). Nuts were stored at 25 °C and sampled at 0, 36, and 72 days for fatty profile analysis. Our findings indicated a significant increase in stearic acid content in ED nuts (24,622 µg/g) compared to CD nuts (16,764 µg/g) at the end of the storage period for the 'Beaumont' cultivar. Additionally, unsaturated fatty acids (USFAs), such as eicosatrienoic acid + erucic acid (C20:3n3 + C22:1) and eicosatrienoic acid + alpha-linolenic acid (C20:1 + C18:3n3), were notably reduced. Hierarchical clustering analysis revealed positive correlations between ethylene treatment and saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in both 'Beaumont' (0.78) and '788' (0.80) cultivars. This also coincided with an increase in atherogenic indices, thrombogenic index, and saturation index and a decrease in the hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic ratio and arachidonic acid (C20:4n6) within the ED group of the 'Beaumont' cultivar, collectively potentially impacting nutritional quality negatively. Furthermore, our findings indicated that the PUFA:SFA ratio was higher in CD (0.51) compared to ED (0.45) on day 72 for the 'Beaumont' cultivar, revealing differences in fatty acid compositions between the two treatment groups. Conversely, for '788', both ED and CD had a PUFA:SFA ratio below 0.45, indicating an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. These results suggest that ethephon treatment increases SFA levels and reduces USFA levels in the 'Beaumont' cultivar, while the response to ethylene varies between the two cultivars. Thus, the study provides insight into the significant role of modifying ethephon treatment methods and careful cultivar selection in the attainment of optimal nutritional value and shelf-life of macadamia nuts. Ethephon is a plant growth regulator that triggers diverse responses in plants, such as fruit ripening, leaf senescence, hull senescence, stem elongation, and nut abscission. This study examined how the preharvest application of ethephon 480 SL® affects selected biochemical components and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity in two macadamia nut cultivars: '788' and 'Beaumont'. Ethephon was applied to the trees via a Cima mist blower at rates of 13.33 mL/L per hectare for the '788' cultivar and 16.67 mL/L per hectare for the 'Beaumont'. Following harvest, the nuts were stored at 25 °C for 72 days, and samples were taken at 18-day intervals. Standard procedures were used to assess the following: total phenolics, total flavonoids, 2,2,-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, Ferric reducing ability power (FRAP) assay, sucrose, total protein, and PPO activities. This evaluation was carried out across a total of four treatments: ethephon-treated nuts from the orchard floor (ED), ethephon-treated nuts from the tree (ET), untreated nuts from the orchard floor (CD), and untreated nuts from the tree (CT). The evaluation's outcomes were analyzed using a principal component analysis (PCA), a correlation matrix heat map (CMHM), and a graphical assessment. The results unveiled significant correlations and associations among the assessed parameters. The correlation matrix heat map analysis highlighted a strong positive correlation (0.97) between the sucrose and the PPO activity in the 'Beaumont' cultivar, supported by the PCA analysis identifying the ED treatment as the most influential. At the storage period's conclusion, the ED treatment had the highest sucrose content (18.63 mg/g) and polyphenol oxidase activity (1.06 U g−1). In the '788' cultivar, a close relationship emerged between the phenolic content, the PPO activity, and the Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)'s antioxidant activity. Consistently, the CT treatment (untreated nuts) demonstrated positive correlations with several key parameters in both cultivars, displaying heightened phenolic content and antioxidant activities. Consequently, our findings indicate that the CT treatment, involving tree-harvested nuts without ethephon application, could be the preferred option for sustaining macadamia nuts' quality and shelf life compared to other methods. Moreover, our study underscores the significance of proper storage conditions for maintaining the desired biochemical parameters of macadamia nuts. By comprehending the effects of distinct treatments and harvesting techniques, producers and processors can devise strategies to optimize storage conditions and uphold macadamia nut quality.
