This ethnomethodological study examines the dynamics of lesson closure in diverse classroom settings, drawing on the sequential analysis of five video-recorded lessons in history, literature, chemistry, and geography classes. The detailed analysis of teacher-student interactions during the lesson endings in a tenth-grade high school classroom in Ankara sheds light on the temporal, social, and interactional processes involved in concluding lessons. The ringing of the bell emerges as a key temporal marker signalling the end of the lesson, while teachers play a central role in orchestrating closure through verbal and non-verbal cues. The interactional dynamics between teachers and students also reveal the negotiation of roles and responsibilities, with students demonstrating orientation to the lesson closure through preparatory actions. Furthermore, the structured nature of lesson closure is evident in sequential patterns and the deployment of terminal components. The study highlights the dynamic nature of classroom interactions during lesson endings, underscoring the formal interactional dynamics at play. Overall, the findings contribute to the understanding of lesson closure processes and offer insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers aiming to enhance teaching and learning experiences in diverse educational contexts. The manuscript analyzes the damage to tangible and intangible cultural assets due to climate change and the deterioration of practices and traditions derived from the ancestral knowledge of local communities about their territory. These assets are threatened by several factors, such as an increase in sea level and in the frequency and severity of droughts.This study, conducted using a qualitative and ethno-methodological approach, analyzes the case of San Basilio de Palenque in Colombia, declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. According to the Ministry of Culture, the territory of San Basilio de Palenque is synonymous with freedom, as anyone who became part of it was automatically free. This territory was originally populated by Maroons or African slaves who escaped from the slavery regime during the colonial period. Today, it is the only one that preserves its ancestral traditions and identity. The results show how environmental deterioration resulting from activities carried out by the community itself, together with intense periods of drought and other adverse effects of climate change, compromise the enjoyment of the cultural life of the palenqueros, put at risk the worldview that the inhabitants associate with the Melchor stream, and restricts the exercise of the freedoms of the community and its capabilities to obtain basic economic means that guarantee their well-being. This study investigates how lower-level English language learners achieve and maintain intersubjectivity and navigate through co-constructed framings during context-embedded tasks such as improvised role-play. In language education settings, activities associated with interactions often reflect multi-layered participant orientations beyond mere linguistic execution. From the perspectives of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, linguistic actions are effective only when they are intersubjectively understood: the complexity of an activity necessitates corresponding levels of intersubjectivity for smooth progression. A close examination of sequence development in role-play activities shows how intersubjectivity is preserved as interlocutors engage in aligning and affiliative moves to avoid potential disruptions and maximize mutual contributions. Interlocutors' progressive inputs are integrated as intersubjectively sustained elements of ongoing interaction framings only when collaboratively developed by the participating parties. The analysis also addresses the impact of online communication tools, acknowledging their increasingly essential role in online teaching. The results suggest the need for a dynamic concept of 'framing,' replacing 'frame,' and recommend that conversation analysis should account for the multi-layered contexts of surrounding activities. Mass communications frame fatness and COVID-19 as a dual threat. This discourse furthers well-established tendencies to degrade bodies labelled overweight or obese, positioning them as deficient and requiring correction. Empirically, this article draws from an online US right-wing news media platform, Campus Reform, including readers' comments (n = 135) on an article denouncing professors working in fat studies during the COVID-19 lockdown. This status degradation ceremony—backed by 'big money' that funds campus culture wars—not only targeted fat people but also academic disciplines, expertise, universities and social justice agenda. Analytically, this study draws from ethnomethodology and literature on media and bodyweight, meddling or health fascism, weaponized stigma and the politics of cruelty. Going beyond the flesh and a particular case study, it also challenges the ways in which cruelty enacted towards those deemed fat (especially women) can spiral into corrosive nationalist discourse in pandemic times. Issues regarded as social problems have been a key element of sociology's disciplinary identity. Sociologists have traditionally been tasked with understanding the root causes of social problems and formulating their solutions. On the other hand, conditions and behaviors which have been regarded as social problems have become issues which concern specific fields of expertise. As a result, as a sub-discipline aiming to develop an all-encompassing perspective towards social problems, sociology of social problems had struggled to find its position regarding the issues. The development of the sub-discipline in the American sociology had proceeded under the influence of structural-functionalism. The influence of phenomenology and ethnomethodology fostered the emergence of the labelling theory, which was followed by a more comprehensive program named as the constructionist sociology of social problems. It is important for a sociological theory of social problems to contribute to the solution of the problems it studies on. However, the key assumptions of constructionism have rendered this perspective sensitive towards the possible involvement of sociologists in the emergence and development of the social problems which were their object of knowledge in the first place. The aim of this study is to provide an inquiry on the extent to which this sensitivity hinders the capacity of constructionism to produce knowledge which can be used to provide solutions to social problems. Feminicide is broadly defined as the gender-related killing of women and girls. Despite the increased efforts to document and measure feminicide, official data remain incomplete, inaccurate, or inexplicable. Angered at such paucity, citizens worldwide are using digital tools and platforms to account for missing data or to counter existing feminicide tallies. This paper presents a creative methodology for investigating digitally mediated citizen data practices against feminicide in Mexico. Based on a relational accountability approach, which builds on ethnomethodology, feminist autoethnography, and critical technocultural discourse analysis (CTDA), I examine the discursive potency of five digital interfaces that document feminicide in Mexico: the digital maps Yo Te Nombro and Ellas Tienen Nombre, the digital memorial Ecos del Desierto, the Instagram account No Estamos Todas, and the multi-media project La Muerte Sale por el Oriente. The main empirical findings demonstrate that, rather than counting or objectively enumerating feminicide, these interfaces recount the killing of women and girls. As a result, in the shift from data sets to data stories, digitally mediated citizen data practices recounting feminicide are relational and situated in affective memories and embodied landscapes. Tasting sessions are a social activity in which the senses and the sensorial features of the tasted objects are the main focus of the participants, who do not only experience taste but also aim at precisely describing it. For doing that, they use pre-formatted tasting sheets and pre-existing standardized repertoires of descriptors. This paper investigates the relations between bodies and sensations, linguistic expressions and the normativity of lexical repertoires. While the literature has insisted on the sensorial lexicon of diverse languages and its specialization within expert domains, the very way in which the sensing body, language, and the normativity of standardized categories are precisely articulated in tasting practices remains understudied. Using an ethnomethodological and conversation analytic approach, this paper demonstrates how participants in training tasting sessions achieve practically, bodily and materially the association between the sample tasted, the sensing body and the use of lexical repertoires. Artefacts and tools like tasting sheets and lexical lists are situatedly mobilized in a way that enhances the senses but also socializes and standardizes them. On the basis of cheese tasting sessions video-recorded during training workshops of professional tasters in Italy and Italian-speaking Switzerland, the paper demonstrates how the normative order of sensing is achieved through the imbrication of the use of tasting sheets within the sensory examination of samples – thus showing how body, materiality, language, and artefacts are normatively constrained, practically managed and bodily aligned in the tasting session. We reply to Esposito and Möllering by clarifying what we meant by the procedure of “critical reconstruction”. It is not an external critique, because we have carefully followed the logic of trust research. But it is also not easily reconcilable with trust research, as Möllering argues, because we show that by doing so one is led to certain aporias, conundrums, and contradictions that do not permit leaving the concept as we found it. We reject any attempt to found the concept of trust in a theoretical constant such as complexity or irreducible uncertainty, and emphasize the need for an ethnomethodological approach that limits itself to how the actors themselves draw the distinctions between trust and blind faith, trust and mistrust, etc. This commitment is all the more necessary now, when trust research has become part of the very phenomenon it studies.

What is trust and how should it be studied? In this essay, we seek to reconstruct the sociological theory of trust and propose an alternate strategy focused on analyzing the skillful nature of the “trust methods” employed by ordinary people. Instead of treating trust as a static property that can be measured by close-format survey questions, we conceptualize trusting as a skillful practice that is highly context-dependent and attuned to temporal variables such as speed, duration, sequence, and timing. To illustrate this approach, we draw on interviews with Long COVID patients focusing on how they account for who, what, when and how they distinguish responsible trust from blind faith.

Every culture has a cosmology containing fundamental beliefs about the nature of time and space, the human individual, and causality. The classical sociology of E.E. Evans‐Pritchard and Melvin Pollner shows this bedrock helps solve the problem of social order. For them it is an unexamined resource against which agents ingeniously reason, using common sense, to resolve disputes, explain anomalies and so preserve a sense of shared reality. But what happens when cosmology is itself subject to open challenge based on evidence? Potentially destabilizing speculations and beliefs about alternative cosmologies are widespread in popular culture today. The paper looks to the paradigm case of the “time travel image.” Widely available on the internet and viewed by millions, these are pitched as an evidentiary threat to established beliefs on the unidirectional flow of time. The study explores the ethnomethodology, mundane reasoning, and cultural framing through which these images are routinely discounted by common sense. A smartphone's screen is commonly regarded as a private space, and the action of looking at it is usually considered a violation of one's privacy both by researchers and designers. However, our study demonstrates how participants in the interaction themselves negotiate moment by moment and achieve an understanding of someone's screen space as public or private. In this paper, we analyze the interactional sequences of uninvited looks at another participant's phone. Drawing on visual ethnography and ethnomethodologically informed multimodal interaction analysis, we video-recorded and analyzed everyday interactions between friends and acquaintances. Our findings show that looking at someone's smartphone display is often performed and oriented to as a resource in interaction rather than an invasion of privacy. We therefore characterize the interactional functions of gazes and glances at another's screen. We also discuss the research and design implications of approaching privacy as a situated practice. In this article, we examine the outbursts of a white passenger on a London tram, antagonizing others through swearing, nationalist, racist and anti-immigrant talk and the responses of carriage members to her confrontational talk. Our analysis uses a video recording of the event made by a passenger that circulated widely on social and news media. We document multiple forms of response, including the video-witnessing itself. We describe how the trouble-making passenger antagonizes other passengers in order to produce opponents. In addition, we track how members of the carriage, in responding, show their right to respond, seek to avoid the terms of the confrontation and, once constituted as political opponents, their opposition to the politics being expressed. In examining the responses to the trouble-making and the politics being contested between the persons involved and, in tracking how public transport is attempted to be transformed into an ad hoc agora, we contribute to Barnett's work on convening public space, ordinary action, and politics in human geography. This paper offers an analysis of the organizational features of passing food objects as a commonplace embodied social practice to accomplish requests to another to taste food during joint cooking activities. Situated within the cognate frameworks of Conversation Analysis and Ethnomethodology, the sequential, multimodal analysis details and explains the formal features of passing food from hand to hand and from hand to mouth as distinct practices with distinct micro-sequential organizations. The study draws on a corpus of 14 hours of video-recordings of naturally occurring joint cooking activities in which the participants speak German, Swedish, and English. Focusing on the projectable aspects of bodily trajectories, the analysis reveals how the request sequences are achieved through the participants' early projection of how to pass the food objects and their stepwise mutual adjustments to their conjoint action trajectory. In progressively establishing who does what next and how during the food transfer, the participants orient to the relevance and distribution of interactional agency. When the normative organization of the step-by-step transfer is disregarded, an ambiguity emerges concerning what action the practice is doing, which prompts the participants to engage in significant interactional work to re-negotiate on what terms the transfer can resume. This shows how issues of interactional agency are exerted and exhibited in and through the sequential organization of social interaction. The results contribute to, and elaborate, prior findings on requests and advances our understanding for the close attention that participants to interaction pay to the detailed aspects of multimodally formatted actions and the normative expectancies that make up to their intelligibility, reflexively elaborating each other. This article investigates moments in social interaction where tacit processes of gender attribution become visible because they are temporarily disrupted and exposed through misgendering. Our data consist of publicly available audio and video-recorded cases of misgendering, mostly from UK and US contexts. Practices of misgendering embody assumptions that map people's current gender onto their self-presentations and gender histories. Organisational features of social interaction facilitate the reproduction of these assumptions as taken-for-granted criteria for gender attribution. In the current climate of 'gender panics', the rise of a norm whereby people's self-defined gender should be respected clashes against enduring assumptions that uphold a gender order grounded in cisgenderism. The exposure of gender assumptions in moments of misgendering presents a potential for social change, but this potential is also limited by practices that reproduce (rather than challenge) the dominant gender order. Large Language Models (LLMs) and generative Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) have become the latest disruptive digital technologies to breach the dividing lines between scientific endeavour and public consciousness. LLMs such as ChatGPT are platformed through commercial providers such as OpenAI, which provide a conduit through which interaction is realised, via a series of exchanges in the form of written natural language text called 'prompt engineering'. In this paper, we use Membership Categorisation Analysis to interrogate a collection of prompt engineering examples gathered from the endogenous ranking of prompting guides hosted on emerging generative AI community and practitioner-relevant social media. We show how both formal and vernacular ideas surrounding 'natural' sociological concepts are mobilised in order to configure LLMs for useful generative output. In addition, we identify some of the interactional limitations and affordances of using role prompt engineering for generating interactional stances with generative AI chatbots and (potentially) other formats. We conclude by reflecting the consequences of these everyday social-technical routines and the rise of 'ethno-programming' for generative AI that is realised through natural language and everyday sociological competencies. We explore the embodied nature of the customer experience. Engaging prior research, we suggest marketing literature is still coming to terms with how best to incorporate the body into its studies, noting manuscripts rarely attend to the bodies of customers moving in situ or analyse what customers do and achieve with their bodies. As a result, theoretical accounts remain quite disconnected from the de facto activities that comprise many marketing processes. Drawing on ethnomethodological study policies, and Wittgenstein's notion of language games, our paper zooms-in on embodied conduct, analysing video recordings of consultations in hair salons. We analyse how customers embody thoughts about and emotional responses to the service provided. Rather than separating mind and body, we identify precise moments where customers draw service employees into their experience during live interaction. Interprofessional meetings are crucial for achieving patient-centeredness in healthcare. Exactly how patient-centeredness is reached during these meetings remains underexamined. Adopting an Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis (hereafter EMCA) perspective, this contribution looks at video-recordings of interprofessional meetings in two distinct healthcare settings: rehabilitation and internal medicine. It aims to provide new insight into how investigations of patient-centeredness as a reflexive achievement allow us to better understand the organizational and relational efforts required to achieve it in practice. This contribution outlines how different healthcare contexts result in variety in the meeting frequency, duration, aims, participants, and agendas, which in turn means that the opportunities for patient-centeredness are not the same. But it also illustrates how patient-centeredness depends on the ways the various opportunities are seized and play out in the interprofessional interactions. It is therefore argued here that research on how patient-centeredness is reached in interprofessional meetings and the development of recommendations for enhancing it both require consideration of context-specific conditions and how participants adapt to and simultaneously modify them to achieve patient-centeredness in practice. This paper explores how citizens help shape the urban environment, partly through their talk, as they participate in a dispute about what elements of that environment should be like. In our investigation of the talk in civic meetings concerning a bicycle lane, we argue that some of the interactional activities of the meeting can be understood as a form of co-design that involves both present and absent others. Accordingly, we seek to expand the understanding of co-design beyond those explicit collaborative practices that involve designers and others to also include contexts of urban governance. Through considering how citizens present themselves in ways that variously detail personal experience, knowledge of a City’s design-consultation processes, and references to multiple others, we can see how a disagreement concerning an element of urban infrastructure (an existing bicycle lane) is enacted in ways that impact subsequent governance decisions (the lane is removed). We consider how conflict and disruption might be considered constitutive elements of some situations of co-design, with our work building on previous scholarship that explores the policy-related settings of, e.g. government debates, as instances of co-design. This paper describes qualitative methods-making informed by Black Studies and ethnomethodology. Specifically, I explore resonances and tensions between ethnomethodology and Katherine McKittrick's theorization of black methodologies to describe an analytic approach to studying how language use and other embodied actions (re)produce humanizing and dehumanizing psychosocial dynamics. Blending insights from these perspectives, I argue for a radical respecification of black life in terms of the real-world practices for and constraints on doing being hybridly human and its associated genres of humanness. To demonstrate my approach, I offer an illustrative sequential-categorial analysis of a black story told in an affinity group for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Overall, I build a case for analytically divesting from biocentrism to surface the creative and unexpected ways people navigate and attempt to counter racial harm. This article proposes a novel approach called breaching-through-service (BtS) that integrates the microsociological approach of ethnomethodology and field-based design experimentation. BtS is service-in-action that is embedded with incongruity. It provides an operational and analytical framework for researchers to breach a social situation by designing and delivering a service, accounting for what occurs in that context, and then acting based on the ensuing interaction. In this way, it enables inquiry and service delivery simultaneously. The BtS approach enriches the practice of studying and harnessing micro-interactions with and for service design. This study aims to reveal the meaning of profit in the "pade angen" tobacco farming community in Ganti village. This research uses the interpretive paradigm and ethnomethodology as the research method. Data collection techniques consist of observation, interviews and documentation with a sample of 10 people. Data analysis techniques in this study used indexicality, reflexivity and contextual action analysis. The results of this research show that the meaning of profit based on the perspective of the tobacco farming community where farmers call it bati is twofold, namely material and immaterial. The material meaning is shown by the ability of farmers to pay off their debts, the independence of farmers to meet the needs of life and the ability of farmers to pay for their children's education. The immaterial meaning is shown by the attitude of kinship and mutual trust. This research contributes to the importance of recording accounting because the character of accounting farmers only makes simple records as a reminder of cash in and out so that farmers cannot know the exact profit of each planting period.

Two seminal notions of Harold Garfinkel have endured despite some uncertainty and indeterminacy that accompany them: "autochthonous" and "tendentious". These terms, which respect the dynamic and evolving nature of social interaction, describe how local parties discover, come upon, or develop coherent accounts that can assist them to lay hold of a local orderliness that is governing some mundane interaction. This paper illuminates these two notions, first theoretically and then empirically. Drawing upon the reflections of Garfinkel, Sacks, Schegloff, Mead, Husserl, Schutz, Gurwitsch, and others, the radical consequences of these two notions are elucidated and then applied to two perspicuous conversations where it is possible to witness autochthony and tendentiousness in action. This provides a clearer understanding of the importance that these features of social interaction can play in our everyday lives. The two illustrations reveal occasions where a local orderliness appears on its own, autochthonously, without requiring a heavy dose of deliberate conceptual control by parties. Using an ethnomethodological approach, we examine a particular case of a dog and its handler learning the 'lean' command. In this scene of instruction, we come upon a place where the uses of a word are taught to both dog and human. Revisiting Vicki Hearne's influential book on animal training, we reflect on animals in conversation with their trainers, and the interconnected problems of understanding and of a dog's specific rights. We describe the establishing of a new command as a body position, location and duration. The opening and closing of a door, as part of learning the new command, poses a puzzle of both instruction and rights for the dog as pupil. Our findings begin to contribute to the 'missing what' of dog training and question the limits of animal geographies in relation to the ethics in, and of, training and education with animals. In addition, we show how animal geographers can learn from and describe the public availability of intersubjective practices. Specifically, we describe the witnessable organisation of learning new commands, as part of which, we acknowledge and are attentive to the dog's work, thereby contributing to studies of animal training, cross-species communication and classrooms. This article provides an ethnomethodologically informed ethnographic investigation of visually recognisable aspects of shared work spots in co-working office rooms. We focus on the phenomenon of holding a place in such environments, and document the participants' practices which constitute distinguishing between empty and taken places. Our investigation leads to a conceptualisation of designed andad hocplaces, noting that objective assessments of rooms' occupation status are problematic. We propose the notion of markers of presence, i.e. the material objects and their configurations, which participants use to indicate to others that a certain place is taken. Finally, we identify an observation area within the office space which participants recurrently use to assess the availability of work spots. We conclude by pointing out that rather than being tied to static features of material objects, the evidently visible occupational status of shared work spots is dynamically re-produced in participants' ongoing courses of action. Online activities can serve as tools for criminal opportunities and arenas for victimhood, but they can also function as reality constructions embedded in social control. One example of the latter is online sleuthing, primarily focused on dramatizing and disentangling offline crimes. This article relies on data from an ethnographic project conducted on the Swedish platform Flashback and analyzes posters' interview accounts of their practices when attempting to unravel offline crimes. The author argues that posters' ways of accounting for their sifting process within their digital community contribute to making it attractive. The posters' situated selections and distinctions allow them to reproduce a handy and relatively tasteful interpretation of the crimes that their digital community is engaged in portraying. Online sleuths not only try to bring order to the offline crime dramas at issue but also engage in internal and reflexive social control, intended to order the ordering itself. They bridge the online–offline divide by referring to and incorporating allegedly objective offline circumstances when they set out to edit or cleanse the online debate. The article presents an editorial focuses on examining the complex relationships between Conversation Analysis (CA), sociology, and social theory, exploring how CA's connections to sociology have evolved since its inception, including its role in understanding the micro-macro linkage in social dynamics. Topics include the historical and intellectual roots of CA within sociology and the incorporation of social theory to address power dynamics and inequalities in conversational interactions.

The text reconstructs the concepts of practice and practicality used in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis and examines their internal similarities and differences as well as similarities and differences to other practice theories. After a description of the characteristics of practice theories, the ethnomethodological perspective on practice and practicality is presented. Then, the use of the terms in conversation analysis is examined. Ethnomethodology uses the notions of “practice” and “practicality” to outline a non-metaphysical theory of social order in which the sharedness of rules or meanings is not presupposed. “Practical” here means that social action, and social order more generally, are practically grounded as well as temporally and situationally constrained. The fact that practical action is fundamentally situated and can only be understood “from within” establishes an essentially indexical character of practical action. In conversation analysis, “practices” are viewed as “context-free” but “context-sensitive” components that constitute action and as such become the objects of investigation. While some have diagnosed a departure of conversation analysis from its ethnomethodological roots, I argue that “context-freeness” and “context-sensitivity” should be complemented by “context-productivity” by reference to Garfinkel’s interpretation of Aron Gurwitsch’s gestalt phenomenology in order to formulate a more encompassing concept of practice. The sudden change in the existing order due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused chaos and confusion. The uncertainty and anxiety caused by chaos and confusion necessitated the reconstruction of the social order in accordance with the pandemic conditions. Therefore, we should consider the sudden change of the social order and its reconstruction when evaluating the COVID-19 pandemic in a sociological context. Since these two processes are ethnomethodologically significant, the aim of the study is to interpret the social changes that occurred during the COVID-19 process within the framework of ethnomethodology theory. Various examples provide an ethnomethodological evaluation of Türkiye's reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent re-establishment of social order. This article analyzes, using ethnomethodology concepts, the irrational reactions of people in a life without rules due to the sudden disruption of the existing order by COVID- 19, the helplessness of social institutions in the face of the pandemic, and the reconstruction of social order with rational rules to lessen anxiety and chaos. People meeting a robot for the first time do not know what it is capable of and therefore how to interact with it—what actions to produce, and how to produce them. Despite social robotics' long-standing interest in the effects of robots' appearance and conduct on users, and efforts to identify factors likely to improve human–robot interaction, little attention has been paid to how participants evaluate their robotic partner in the unfolding of actual interactions. This paper draws from qualitative analyses of video-recorded interactions between a robot and groups of participants, in the framework of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. We analyse the particular ways in which participants shape their embodied actions, how they can reproduce a prior action that failed to obtain a response from the robot; and how they explore the robot's embodied nature. We find a set of recurrent methods or practices, showing that robot-recipient design displays not only participants' initial assumptions about the robot's competences, but also more importantly perhaps their continuous assessment of the robot's behaviour, and their attempts to adapt to it. Participants locally produce and constantly revise their understanding of the robot as a more or less competent co-participant, drawing from its past, current, and projected conduct and responsiveness. We discuss the implications of these findings for research in robotics and human–robot interactions, and the value of the approach to shed new light on old questions by paying attention to the quality of gesture and the sequential organisation of interaction. This paper investigates the in-situ accomplishment of travelling together during the turbulent times of a global pandemic. It expands the literature on the Mobile Risk Society to enquire into the dispersed, situated management of risk of contagion in public transport. Particularly, it suggests combining the grand theory and epochal account for risk assumed by Beck with a Foucauldian governmentality-perspective that understands risk management as the numerous endeavours to steer and manage the conduct of passengers as well as, importantly, the passengers' conduct of themselves. Appropriating ethnomethodological categorisation analysis, the paper analyses video footage from inside train carriages running in the north region of Denmark during the pandemic and points out the fine-grained details of passengers' interactional negotiation and fulfilment of the train company's risk-management strategy. Although a common German sociological methodology, the documentary method has rarely been received outside the German-speaking region or in the field of criminology in general. Additionally, while ethnographic semantics is a recognized means of analysis in the field of ethnography, it is less known in criminological research. This paper proposes that the approaches in themselves but especially a combination of both allow for a deeper understanding of the cultural practices, everyday routines, and implicit knowledge of security actors. While the police are a constant focus of criminological and social science research, the study of Municipal Law Enforcement Services (MLES), particularly qualitative approaches, have been largely neglected, despite the increasing number of municipalities implementing their own security personnel. Consequently, their increased presence in public space warrants further investigation. The added value of linking two reconstructive approaches to analysis is demonstrated using MLES as an example. Thereby, both the advantages of such a combination for criminological research and new insights regarding the ways MLES interact with people in public space are illustrated. The research follows an ethnomethodological design and is based on expert interviews and participant observation. The paper addresses peripheral issues on three levels: the use of a previously geographically limited method of data analysis, an innovative triangulation of approaches to analysis that has not yet been applied in international criminological research as well as the presentation of German MLES as an under-researched subject. In this editorial, we introduce the special issue entitled, ‘Language and psychosocial oppression: Methodological approaches, challenges, and opportunities’. This special issue includes seven articles that were produced in relation to the growing attention being given to the psychological phenomena associated with (in)justice and (in)equity, with a particular focus on how justice-oriented agendas and interventions might be advanced. Specifically, the included articles point to ways in which more micro-oriented approaches to studying languaging practices might serve to analytically and theoretically foreground justice-oriented research aims. Families have a right to privacy, but we know little about how the public–private boundary is negotiated at the micro level in educational settings. Adopting ethnomethodology, the paper examines how talk about the home situation was occasioned and managed in ten parent–teacher conferences in early childhood education and care (ECEC), with a special focus on the ECEC teacher's strategies for eliciting family information. The paper demonstrates a continuum of interactional practices which, in various degrees, make parents accountable for providing family information. The analysis shows that parents both volunteer and provide the pursued information, thus actively orienting to the norm of visibility in child rearing. However, although both parties orient to questioning and fishing as business as usual, the parents' accounts sometimes had an excusing quality or they adopted a reserved communication style, suggesting a certain ambivalence as well. The paper outlines different ways of understanding the present partnership ideal in parent–teacher teacher cooperation with implications for the negotiation of privacy.
