New rock dredge samples supply key information to establish the tectonic and geological framework of the northern two-thirds of the 95% submerged Zealandia continent. The R/V Investigator voyage IN2016T01 to the Fairway Ridge, Coral Sea, obtained poorly sorted poly-lithologic pebbly to cobbly sandstones, well sorted fine grained sandstones, mudstones, bioclastic limestones, and basaltic lavas. Post-cruise analytical work comprised petrography, whole rock geochemical and Sr and Nd isotopic analyses, and U-Pb zircon, Rb-Sr, and Ar-Ar geochronology. A Fairway Ridge cobbly sandstone has a ∼95 Ma (early Late Cretaceous) depositional age; two biotite granite cobbles are 111 ± 1 and 128 ± 1 Ma in age, and some volcanic pebbles are also likely Early Cretaceous. Fairway Ridge basalts have intraplate alkaline chemistry and are of Late Eocene age (∼40–36 Ma). By analogy with South Zealandia, we interpret strong positive continental magnetic anomalies of North Zealandia to mainly result from Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic intraplate basalts, many of them rift-related lavas. A new basement geological map of North Zealandia shows the position of the Mesozoic Gondwana magmatic arc axis (Median Batholith) and other major geological units. This study completes onland and offshore reconnaissance geological mapping of the entire 5 Mkm2 Zealandia continent.

Located in the South-West Pacific, at the northern extremity of the mostly submerged Zealandia continent, the New Caledonian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) covers 1,470,000 km² and includes basins, ridges and seamounts where abundant ferromanganese crusts have been observed. Several investigations have been conducted since the 1970s on the nature and composition of ferromanganese crusts from New Caledonia’s seamounts and ridges, but none have covered the entire EEZ. We present data from 104 ferromanganese crusts collected in New Caledonia’s EEZ during twelve oceanographic cruises between 1974 and 2019. Samples were analysed for mineralogy, geochemical compositions, growth rates, and through a statistical approach using correlation coefficients and factor analysis. Crust thicknesses range from 1 mm to 115 mm, with growth rates between 0.45 mm/Ma and 102 mm/Ma. Based on textures, structures, discrimination plots, and growth rates, we distinguish a group of hydrogenetic crusts containing the highest mean contents of Co (0.42 wt%), Ni (0.31 wt%), and high contents of Mo, V, W, Pb, Zn, Nb, from a group of hydrothermal and/or diagenetic deposits showing high mean contents of Mn (38.17 wt%), Ba (0.56 wt%) and low contents of other trace metals. Several samples from this later group have exceptionally high content of Ni (0.7 wt%). The data shows that crusts from the southern part of the EEZ, notably seamounts of the Loyalty Ridge and the Lord Howe Rise, present high mineral potential for prospectivity owing to high contents of valuable metals, and constitute a great target for further investigation

Les toutes premières campagnes bathymétriques dans la ZEE de Nouvelle-Calédonie, ont été réalisées courant 1985 par le N/O Jean Charcot. Dans les années suivantes, le programme ZONECO, financé par le gouvernement de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, s'est concentré sur l'évaluation de la biodiversité marine et de la géologie marine de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, ce qui impliqua un important volet bathymétrique. Ainsi depuis les années 90, des missions bathymétriques ont été régulièrement conduites dans la ZEE par les N/O L’Atalante et Alis. Avec l’accumulation de ces données, et à la suite de travaux de synthèse précédents, l’idée est venue de réaliser un projet de refonte d'un atlas bathymétrique pour la Nouvelle-Calédonie (hors lagon). Ce rapport présente le travail de création de la base de données bathymétriques multifaisceaux et la production de modèles numériques de terrain de Nouvelle-Calédonie pour la partie marine au-delà du lagon. Il décrit les quatre principales étapes du travail : Inventaire des données : Vérification et catalogage des informations sur les missions bathymétriques. Création de la base de données bathymétriques, avec une arborescence de fichiers appropriée pour stocker les données bathymétriques et de rétrodiffusion. Traitement des données bathymétriques pour l’ensemble des nouveaux jeux de données, et contrôle qualité des atlas et compilations antérieures. Production des Modèles Numériques de Terrain, à différentes résolutions, selon la gamme de profondeurs et la résolution des sondeurs multifaisceaux utilisés.
