- Abstract
Small pelagic fish (SPF) species are heavily exploited in eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS) as their transformation products are increasingly used in the world food chain. Management relies on regular monitoring, but there is a lack of robust theories for the emergence of the populations’ traits and their evolution in highly variable environments. This work aims to address existing knowledge gaps by combining physical and biogeochemical modelling with an individual life-cycle based model applied to round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) off northwest Africa, a key species for regional food security. Our approach focused on the processes responsible for seasonal migrations, spatio-temporal size-structure, and interannual biomass fluctuations. Emergence of preferred habitat resulted from interactions between natal homing behaviour and environmental variability that impacts early life stages. Exploration of the environment by the fishes was determined by swimming capabilities, mesoscale to regional habitat structure, and horizontal currents. Fish spatio-temporal abundance variability emerged from a complex combination of distinct life-history traits. An alongshore gradient in fish size distributions is reported and validated by in situ measurements. New insights into population structure are provided, within an area where the species is abundant year-round (Mauritania) and with latitudinal migrations of variable (300 to 1200 km) amplitude. Interannual biomass fluctuations were linked to modulations of fish recruitment over the Sahara Bank driven by variability in alongshore current intensity. The identified processes constitute an analytical framework that can be implemented in other EBUS and used to explore impacts of regional climate change on SPF.

- Abstract
Small pelagic fish (SPF) species are heavily exploited in the four main eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS), including both Atlantic African ones, as their transformation are increasingly used in the world food chain. Management rely on regular monitoring, but there is a lack of model for population traits emergence and evolution according to the variability of the environment. We attempt to extract some general rules based on the analysis of a life cycle biophysical individual based model applied to the round sardinella (Sardinella aurita, Clupeidae) population off North West Africa. Our analysis focused on the processes responsible for seasonal migrations, spatio-temporal body-length distribution, and inter-annual biomass fluctuations. These patterns were found at individual level in the dynamic change of preferred habitat, and variability in exploration capacities. The former resulted from complex interactions between natal homing behavior and environmental variability, while the last was determined by individual swimming capacities, the mesoscale structure of the habitat and the horizontal currents. Observed spatio-temporal abundance variability emerged from a superposition of numerous distinct individual life histories. This work also suggested an alongshore pattern in size distributions confirmed by in situ surveys. New insights about population structure are provided, with a focal area in Mauritania and mainly two migrating sub-populations centered at 18°N and 21°N, respectively. Inter-annual biomass fluctuations were linked to variability in Sahara Bank's fish recruitment, itself depending on southward current intensity. The identified processes constitute an analytical frame that can be transposed to study Small pelagic fish in all eastern boundary upwelling systems and used to study potential effect of regional climate change.

Crise, A. ... et. al.-- 12 pages, 1 figure, 5 tables, PERSEUS project aims to identify the most relevant pressures exerted on the ecosystems of the Southern European Seas (SES), highlighting knowledge and data gaps that endanger the achievement of SES Good Environmental Status (GES) as mandated by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A complementary approach has been adopted, by a meta-analysis of existing literature on pressure/impact/knowledge gaps summarized in tables related to the MSFD descriptors, discriminating open waters from coastal areas. A comparative assessment of the Initial Assessments (IAs) for five SES countries has been also independently performed. The comparison between meta-analysis results and IAs shows similarities for coastal areas only. Major knowledge gaps have been detected for the biodiversity, marine food web, marine litter and underwater noise descriptors. The meta-analysis also allowed the identification of additional research themes targeting research topics that are requested to the achievement of GES. © 2015 The Authors, This work has been partially funded by the EC FP7 PERSEUS Project (Grant. - Abstract
Marine phytoplankton was studied in January and July 2002 along of four transects: 32°30'N, 29°N, 24°30'N and 24°N. A total of 142 taxa were recorded in this area. The maximal specific richness, both in summer and in winter, was registered around Dakhla (24°N). The global spatiotemporal variability of species richness and specific diversity showed that the most structured and species-rich populations are situated in the coastal areas. The vertical variation of the two parameters showed homogeneity between depth levels. The maximal phytoplanktonic densities are recorded in the southern transects due to the permanent upwelling activity in the southern Atlantic coast. The bathymetric distribution of densities was more heterogeneous during summer, characterized by a high intensity of upwelling. The species Thalassionema nitzschioides, Asterionellopsis glacialis, Melosira, Chaetoceros and Leptocylindrus minimus are indicators of upwelling., (Copyright © 2012 Académie des sciences. - Abstract
The study of the Cape Ghir upwelling filament (31°N) focalizes to describe the dispersive mechanism, caused by the upwelling. The zooplankton was sampled during five oceanographic cruises conducted between 2008 and 2009. Surface temperature and chlorophyll "a" were also measured along with sampling. The distribution of environmental parameters accused extensions that show the path of the filament. Copepods constitute the largest fraction of zooplankton community and represented by 86 species, majorly dominated by Acartia clausi and Oncaea venusta. A number of species of deep or cold waters have been recorded in the area corresponding to a net resurgence of cold water. The analysis of the copepods distribution allowed to view the path of the filament at different times of the year. The distribution of the species A. clausi, neritic specie was observed in the open ocean, shows a result of this dynamic., (Copyright © 2011 Académie des sciences. Published by Elsevier SAS. - Abstract
In this paper, we present a deterministic time discrete mathematical model based on multiregional periodic matrices to describe the dynamics of Sardina pilchardus in the Central Atlantic area of the Moroccan coast. This model deals with two stages (immature and mature) and three spatial zones where sardines are supposed to migrate from one zone to another. The population dynamics is described by an autonomous recurrence equation N(t + 1) = A.N(t), where A is a positive matrix whose entries are estimated using data collected during biannual acoustic surveys carried out from 2001 to 2003 onboard the Norwegian research vessel "Dr Fridtjof Nansen". The dominant eigenvalue lambda of A that gives the long-term growth rate of fish population is smaller than one. This agrees with the stock decrease observed in the data collected. We show that lambda is highly sensitive to the recruitment rate and much less sensitive to the reproduction rate. These results can clearly be used to define an efficient scenario in order to fight for instance against a stock decrease.
