Visible light communication (VLC) is a wireless technology that relies on optical intensity modulation and is potentially a game changer for internet-of-things (IoT) connectivity. However, VLC is hindered by the low penetration depth of visible light in non-transparent media. One solution is to extend operation into the “nearly (in)visible” near-infrared (NIR, 700–1000 nm) region, thus also enabling VLC in photonic bio-applications, considering the biological tissue NIR semitransparency, while conveniently retaining vestigial red emission to help check the link operativity by simple eye inspection. Here, we report new far-red/NIR organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with a 650–800 nm emission range and external quantum efficiencies among the highest reported in this spectral range (>2.7%, with maximum radiance and luminance of 3.5 mW/cm2 and 260 cd/m2, respectively). With these OLEDs, we then demonstrate a “real-time” VLC setup achieving a data rate of 2.2 Mb/s, which satisfies the requirements for IoT and biosensing applications. These are the highest rates ever reported for an online unequalised VLC link based on solution-processed OLEDs., Long-wavelength OLEDs: visible light communication Highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that operate in the red and near-infrared region bring new opportunities for applications involving visible light communication (VLC). Alessandro Minotto and coworkers from the UK, Poland and Italy have designed and fabricated heavy-metal-free OLEDs featuring a polymeric light-generating active region composed of a fluorescent 𝜋-expanded diketopyrrolopyrrole dye called eDPP blended in a host charge-transport matrix called F8BT. The devices emit light at 650–800 nm with an external quantum efficiency of around 2.7% and a radiance of 3.5 mW/cm2. When employed in a data communications link, error-free data rates of ~2.2 Mb/s were achieved making them suitable for a variety of internet-of-things (IoT) applications such as data-enabled biosensing implants where shorter-wavelength visible light cannot be used due to the issue of strong absorption.

A series of six new single crystals of fully stoichiometric As3+-bearing Mo-oxides and partially W-substituted Mo-oxides with formula As m O(Mo1− x W x O3) p (m = 1, 2; p = 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11 and 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) was successfully grown using vapor-phase transport in vacuo. The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. All these compounds exhibit acentric orthorhombic symmetry with Z = 2, and belong to the so-called (n)-ITB (intergrowth tungsten bronzes) family, with n = 2, 3, 4 and 5. The six (n)-ITB phases have the following formulae: (2)-AsMo5O16 (Pm 2a), (2)-As2Mo10O31 (Pma 2), (3)-AsMo7O22 (Pmn 21), (3)-As(Mo5.53W1.47)O22 (Pmn 21), (4)-As(Mo4.33W4.67)O28 (Pm 2a) and (5)-As(W6.63Mo4.37)O34 (Pmn 21). Their structures consist of vertex-sharing MO6 octahedral units (with M either Mo or Mo/W) connected so as to form three-dimensional frameworks. Such frameworks consist of perovskite tungsten bronzes (PTB) type slabs, from 2- to 5-octahedra wide, intergrown with single hexagonal tungsten bronzes (HTB) type slabs, stacked up to form pseudo-hexagonal tunnels along the a-axis. As3+ and additional oxygen atoms are located in off-center positions inside the tunnels, forming As–O bonds with peculiar arrangements. In particular, we obtained the first examples of structures where, besides the usual AsO3E distorted pyramidal geometry, As3+ adopts AsO4E coordination with a seesaw configuration.

In this paper we report on the fabrication of n-doped ZnO and semiconducting n-ZnO at room temperature by a new ablation deposition technology that makes use of electron/plasma ablation sources named Pulsed Plasma Deposition (PPD) developed by Organic Spintronics Srl.The oxygen vacancies n-doped ZnO PPD grown thin film is deposited on PET and shows a resistivity of 3 x 10-4ohm cm. The n-ZnO TCO is compact, smooth and highly transparent in the UV-VIS (better than 90 T%) as well as in the near IR spectral range and it is remarkably temperature stable. Typical ZnO deposition rate of the PPD is 500 nm/min.The RT deposited semiconductor ZnO shows a very large Hall electron mobility up to 1000 cm2/Vs approaching that of the single crystal. Preliminary results of Si/SiO2 based bottom gate and contact FET test pattern structures with a 50 nm overlaying ZnO thin film shows an ON/OFF ratio of 50000 and a FET mobility of 1 cm2/Vs. Further implementation on appropriate FET design will be performed to explore the possibility to achieve a larger FET mobility. The PPD proves to be an enabling technology that makes it possible the advent of flexible OLED displays.

An ion beam source using electrospray ionization is presented for nondestructive vacuum deposition of mass-selected large organic molecules and inorganic clusters. Electrospray ionization is used to create an ion beam from a solution containing the nanoparticles or molecules to be deposited. To form and guide the ion beam, radio frequency and electrostatic ion optics are utilized. The kinetic energy distribution of the particles is measured to control the beam formation and the landing process. The particle mass-to-charge ratio is analyzed by in situ time-of-flight mass spectrometry. To demonstrate the performance of the setup, deposition experiments with gold nanoclusters and bovine serum albumin proteins on graphite surfaces were performed and analyzed by ex situ atomic force microscopy. The small gold clusters are found to form three-dimensional agglomerations at the surface, preferentially decorating the step edges. In contrast, bovine serum albumin creates two-dimensional fractal nanostructures on the substrate terraces due to strong intermolecular interactions.

We report measurements on a multilayer of (alpha) - sexithienyl (T6) and C60 grown in ultra-high vacuum. The photoluminence spectrum of the multilayer is made up to T6 emission at high energies, and C60 emission at low energies. The T6 emission has more structure than that of bulk T6, even after taking into account reabsorption by the C60. However, the spectrum can be simulated quite well by assuming that there is both emission from bulk T6 and isolated molecules of T6, based on the vibronic structure that we would expect from isolated T6 molecules. Molecules of T6 may conceivably become isolated at the C60 interface, if they migrate into gaps between C60 grains, for example. Thus we cannot conclude that any of the new peaks we see are due to charge transfer between the C60 and T6. The low energy fluorescence is that of C60, but its efficiency is orders of magnitude larger than is seen in films of C60. We cannot explain this yet.
