This study aimed to discover the proportion of people dying by suicide who had non-psychiatric medical contact alone or any mental health contact in the year, month, and week prior to suicide. Data on suicide deaths (n = 74,741) of all South Koreans from 2009 to 2013 were linked with National Health Insurance (NHI) data by social security number to identify health care contact during the 12 months prior to suicide. The NHI data includes records on inpatient or outpatient service and type of health care institutes which the decedents have contacted. Among the 74,741 individuals who died by suicide, the proportion of individuals who contacted non-psychiatric health care alone was 60.1%, 46.1%, and 35.5%; and the proportion of those who had any mental health contact was 27.9%, 18.0%, and 7.9% in the year, four weeks, and week before death, respectively. Psychiatric care visits in the year, four weeks and weeks prior to death occurred most frequently in psychiatric local clinics. Non-psychiatric care visits in the year and four weeks prior to death were most common in local clinics at the primary care level, but in the one week before death, non-psychiatric care visits were common in tertiary hospital departments. This study indicates that the majority of suicide cases are not diagnosed and managed preceding death despite high general medical contact rates. It implies that suicide prevention strategy should be applied to non-psychiatric medical settings in countries with high suicide rates like South Korea.

English-language studies of Korean drama (Korean tv serials) have tended to focus on the transnational consumption of drama in the context of the ‘Korean Wave’ (Hallyu). Analysing the classification and reception of Korean drama and its interaction with Korean audiences, this paper argues that there has been a significant shift both in the dramas produced and in the audience expectations and interactions with these texts. Building on twenty-one in-depth interviews and ethnographic data, the authors analyse the gendered structures of identification with the characters of dramas. Korean dramas are increasingly held to a standard of realism wherein audiences expect them to represent ‘reality’ rather than a fantastical escape from it. The authors argue, therefore, that dramas are also fulfilling a social function in being able to represent and generate dialogue over social problems in contemporary Korean society., peer-reviewed

Postharvest apple rot causes severe economic losses and lowers apple quality, and is one of the most important limiting factors of apple exports. Apples with rot symptoms were sampled from Geochang, South Korea. Isolation of the causal fungus was performed by culturing small pieces of diseased tissues on potato dextrose agar. Two different rot genera, Fusarium and Alternaria, were identified according to their morphological characteristics. To confirm the identity of the causal fungus, we sequenced the DNA of the complete internal transcribed spacer(ITS) rDNA gene region and translation elongation factor 1-alpha(EF1-α) region. Koch’s postulates were supported by pathogenicity tests conducted on apple fruit. Based on mycological characteristics, molecular identification, and pathogenicity tests, the two fungi were identified as Fusarium tricinctum and Alternaria alternata. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of postharvest apple rot caused by F. tricinctum and A. alternata in South Korea.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive therapy that has been implicated in treatment of serious neurological disorders. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the effects of rTMS remain unclear. Therefore, this study examined the differential effects of repetitive magnetic stimulation (rMS) in an in vitro neuronal model of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, depending on low and high frequency. Neuro-2a cells were differentiated with retinoic acid and established for in vitro neuronal model of I/R injury under a subsequent 3 h of oxygen and glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) condition. After the I/R injury, the differentiated neuronal cells were stimulated with rMS on day 1 and randomly divided into three groups: OGD/R+sham, OGD/R+low-frequency, and OGD/R+high-frequency groups. High-frequency rMS increases cell proliferation through activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases and AKT-signaling pathway and inhibits apoptosis in OGD/R-injured cells. Furthermore, high-frequency rMS increases Ca2+–calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII)-cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB) signaling pathway, further leading to alternation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression and synaptic plasticity in OGD/R injured cells. These results verified the neurobiological mechanisms of frequency-dependent rMS in I/R injury-treated neuronal cells. These mechanisms will help develop more powerful and credible rTMS stimulation treatment protocols.

Severe stem rot in hydroponically grown tomatoes was observed in Jinju, South Korea in early spring, 2016. Initial symptoms were water-soaked lesions on the lower stems, near the collar. Infected tomato plants gradually wilted leading to death of the plants. Advanced lesions were brown in color. Fungal isolates were identified by morphology and sequences of the gene encoding translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α). To fulfill Koch’s criteria, pathogenicity tests were completed on potted 2-month-old tomato plants. The causal fungus was identified as Neocosmospora ipomoeae. This is the first report of tomato stem rot caused by Neo. ipomoeae in Korea.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) has differentiated the effects on apoptosis in normal and cancer cells. The mechanisms that account for the opposite effects on these cells are not adequately understood. In this study, we investigated the combined effect of melatonin and thapsigargin (TG) on apoptosis of renal cancer cells. Cotreatment with melatonin (1mm) and TG (50nm) induced approximately 10-fold expression levels of CCAAT-enhancer-binding proteins homologous protein (CHOP) compared with that of TG (50nm) alone. Downregulation of CHOP expression using small interfering RNAs markedly attenuated melatonin plus TG-mediated apoptosis. In addition, cotreatment with TG- and melatonin-induced CHOP upregulation likely relates to melatonin's antioxidant capacity because we proved that this CHOP upregulation is melatonin receptor independent. Our results collectively demonstrate that the upregulation of CHOP contributes to the enhancing effect of melatonin plus TG on apoptosis in cancer cells.

© 2016 the American Physiological Society. Contact between β-cells is necessary for their normal function. Identification of the proteins mediating the effects of β-cell-to-β-cell contact is a necessary step toward gaining a full understanding of the determinants of β-cell function and insulin secretion. The secretory machinery of the β-cells is nearly identical to that of central nervous system (CNS) synapses, and we hypothesize that the transcellular protein interactions that drive maturation of the two secretory machineries upon contact of one cell (or neural process) with another are also highly similar. Two such transcellular interactions, important for both synaptic and β-cell function, have been identified: EphA/ephrin-A and neuroligin/neurexin. Here, we tested the role of another synaptic cleft protein, CADM1, in insulinoma cells and in rat and human islet β-cells. We found that CADM1 is a predominant CADM isoform in β-cells. In INS-1 cells and primary β-cells, CADM1 constrains insulin secretion, and its expression decreases after prolonged glucose stimulation. Using a coculture model, we found that CADM1 also influences insulin secretion in a transcellular manner. We asked whether extracellular CADM1 interactions exert their influence via the same mechanisms by which they influence neurotransmitter exocytosis. Our results suggest that, as in the CNS, CADM1 interactions drive exocytic site assembly and promote actin network formation. These results support the broader hypothesis that the effects of cell-cell contact on β-cell maturation and function are mediated by the same extracellular protein interactions that drive the formation of the presynaptic exocytic machinery. These interactions may be therapeutic targets for reversing β-cell dysfunction in diabetes.

ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) channels in pancreatic beta-cells comprise sulfonylurea receptor (SUR) 1 and inwardly-rectifying potassium channel (Kir) 6.2 subunits. We have evaluated the effect of intracellular taurine on K(ATP) channel activity in rat pancreatic beta-cells using the patch-clamp technique. The mechanism of taurine action was also examined using recombinant K(ATP) channels. The islets and single beta-cells from male Sprague-Dawley rats were collected by collagenase digestion technique. Single K(ATP) channel currents were recorded by the inside-out mode at a membrane potential of -60mV. Cytosolic free-Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](c)) and insulin secretory capacity were measured by the dual-excitation fluorimetry and radioimmunoassay, respectively. The native beta-cell K(ATP) channel was directly inhibited by taurine in a dose-dependent manner. Taurine did not influence ATP-mediated inhibition or MgADP-induced activation of the channel activity. The sensitivity of the K(ATP) channel to glybenclamide, but not gliclazide, was enhanced by taurine. Glybenclamide elicited a greater increase in [Ca(2+)](c) and increased insulin secretion in the beta-cells when pretreated with taurine. Taurine did not inhibit Kir6.2DeltaC36 currents, a truncated form of Kir6.2, expressed in Xenopus oocytes without SUR. These results demonstrate that taurine inhibits the K(ATP) channel activity in the beta-cells, interacting with a benzamido-binding site on SUR1, but not Kir6.2.

B: patients with pain relief of less than 6 months, Group C: patients with pain relief of more than 6 months) who failed to the medical treatment were included to undertake a fluoroscopic-guided TFESI. Prior to treatment, the VAS (visual analogue scale), ODI (Oswestry disability index), BDI (Beck depression inventory), and BAI (Beck anxiety inventory) scores were determined to evaluate the degre e of pain, disability, and psychological status. The VAS and ODI scores were used to assess the degree of pain r elief. To identify the total duration of pain relief, regular outpatient visits for six months were conducted, and for the patients who were not able to visit the outpatient clinic regularly, outcome was assessed by telephone interviews after six months. Results: The dural sac cross-sectional area (DSCSA), ODI, pain duration, BDI, BAI, and age showed similar distribution for patients in the A, B, and C groups. Conclusions: The DSCSA, ODI, pain duration, BDI, BAI, and age were not associated with the therapeutic duration of TFESI in lumbar spinal stenosis patients. (Korean J Pain 2008; 21: 136�� 142)

Background: This study was performed to evaluate the correlations between lumbar epidural depth by MRI and physical measurements. Methods: The anatomy of the lumbar epidural space was evaluated using MRI scans of 121 patients (93 male and 31 female). Epidural depth was measured from the skin to the center of the posterior epidural space at the L3-4 and L 4-5 levels by two methods (in a parallel line to the lumbar spinous process [SKEP I] and in a vertical line to the long axis of the spine [SKEP II]). Physical measurements such as weight, height, foot size, and waist were measured, other physical measurements such as the Ponderal index (PI), body mass index (BMI), and obesity (Broca's index) were calculated. Results: Significant correlations between depth from the skin to the posterior epidural space were found for Ponderal index(PI), body mass index (BMI), obesity (Broca's index), weight, waist circumference, height, and foot size. The depth from the skin to the supraspinous ligament correlated with BMI, obesity (Broca's index), PI, weight, and waist circumference. The depth from the supraspinous ligament to the posterior epidural space were found to correlate with height and foot size. Conclusions: PI had a higher predictive value for epidural depth than the other physical measurements.

Background: Propofol is a good induction agent. but it has a disadvantage of pain on intravenous injection. Pretreatment of metoclopramide or lidocaine have been reported to reduce pain on injection. thus, we have evaluated the quantity and quality of anagesic effect of metoclopramide and lidocaine. We observed differences in quality of pain according to venous cannula sizes and intravenous injection sites as well as nausea and vomiting in the postoperative state. Methods: Eighty patients scheduled for an elective operation by general anesthesia were chosen according to ASA (I or II) and divided into four groups randomly. Each group was injected through venous cannulas with normal saline (control group), metoclopramide 5 mg (group 1), metoclopramide 10 mg (group 2), or 2% lidocaine 40 mg (group 3) respectively. Then, propofol was injected of a 2 mg/kg dose with 0.5 ml/sec to all groups and we asked questions about injection pain after 10 seconds. Results: Pain relief was shown in all groups compared with the control. but metoclopramide 10 mg and lidocaine 40 mg pretreatment groups showed significant pain reief. Pain was relieved significantly when the drug was injected in the antecubital area. Postoperative nausea and vomiting were not observed. Conclusions: Metoclopramide 10 mg or lidocaine 40 mg pretreatment to induction by propofol revealed a good analgesic effect for propofol injection pain.
