Abstract The demand for high-capacity batteries with long cycle life and safety has been increasing owing to the expanding mid-to-large battery market. Li–S batteries are suitable energy-storage devices because of their reversibility, high theoretical capacity, and inexpensive construction materials. However, their performance is limited by various factors, including the shuttle effect and dendrite growth at the anode. Here, an integrated electrode for use in all-solid-state (ASS) Li–S batteries was formed via hot pressing. In detail, S particles dispersed in a functionalized reduced graphite oxide (rGO) cathode with a binder-less polymer electrolyte (PE) and a dual-anion ionic liquid-containing cross-linked poly(ethylene oxide)–Li bis(fluoromethanesulfonyl)imide–N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide-based solid polymer electrolyte (SPE, PEO–LiFSI0.1(Pyr14TFSI)0.4) were hot-pressed into an integrated electrode, which serves as both the cathode and electrolyte. The resulting S/rGO-based solid-state Li–S batteries exhibited more stable performance than Li–S batteries using liquid electrolytes did, indicating that the dual-anion SPE layer effectively suppressed dendritic Li formation and the shuttle effect with high ionic conductivity. At 0.1 C, the battery discharge capacities were 957 and 576 mAh g−1 in the first cycle and after 100 cycles, respectively. At 1 C, the reversible capacity was 590 and 417 mAh g−1 in the first cycle and after 100 cycles, respectively (capacity retention = 71%). Therefore, the proposed S/rGO/PE//LiFSI0.1(Pyr14TFSI)0.4-integrated electrodes are beneficial for ASS Li–S batteries.

Exposure to toxic molecules from food or oral medications induces toxicity in colon cells that cause various human diseases; however, in vitro monitoring systems for colon cell toxicity are not well established. Stress granules are nonmembranous foci that form in cells exposed to cellular stress. When cells sense toxic environments, they acutely and systemically promote stress granule formation, with Ras GTPase-activating protein-binding protein 1 (G3BP1) acting as a core component to protect their mRNA from abnormal degradation. Here, we knocked in green fluorescent protein (GFP)-coding sequences into the C-terminal region of the G3BP1 gene in a human colon cell line through CRISPR-Cas9-mediated homologous recombination and confirmed the formation of stress granules with the G3BP1-GFP protein in these cells under cellular stress exposure. We demonstrated the formation and dissociation of stress granules in G3BP1-GFP expressing colon cells through real-time monitoring using a fluorescence microscope. Furthermore, we validated the toxicity monitoring system in the established colon cell line by observing stress granule formation following exposure to dihydrocapsaicin, bisphenol A, and sorbitol. Taken together, we established a stress granule reporter system in a colon cell line, providing a novel assessment for the real-time monitoring of colon toxicity in response to various chemicals.

The landscape of treatment for first-line therapy in advanced urothelial cancer (aUC) and metastatic urothelial cancer (mUC) has rapidly changed in the last year alone. Maintenance avelumab remains a viable treatment option for many patients across the globe for those who have responded or have achieved stable disease after platinum-based chemotherapy. However, the recent FDA approvals based on EV-302 for enfortumab vedotin (EV) and pembrolizumab, as well as CheckMate-904 with gemcitabine and cisplatin with nivolumab (GC+N) followed by maintenance nivolumab have left clinicians with the complicated decision of determining which regimen is most appropriate for their individual patients with untreated aUC. This commentary highlights the key trials that have set the standard-of-care for front-line aUC treatment and suggestions for choosing different regimens for the appropriate patient.

Abstract The development of premalignant colorectal polyps is significantly influenced by various lifestyle and modifiable risk factors. In our study, we used a large cohort of 9025 patients, who underwent screening colonoscopies at a university hospital, to assess the risk factors associated with the development of three different colorectal cancer precursor lesions: non-advanced adenomas (NAs), advanced adenomatous lesions (ADLs), and sessile serrated lesions (SSLs). Abstract Background Astrocytes, one of the most resilient cells in the brain, transform into reactive astrocytes in response to toxic proteins such as amyloid beta (Aβ) in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, reactive astrocyte-mediated non-cell autonomous neuropathological mechanism is not fully understood yet. We aimed our study to find out whether Aβ-induced proteotoxic stress affects the expression of autophagy genes and the modulation of autophagic flux in astrocytes, and if yes, how Aβ-induced autophagy-associated genes are involved Aβ clearance in astrocytes of animal model of AD. Methods Whole RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed to detect gene expression patterns in Aβ-treated human astrocytes in a time-dependent manner. To verify the role of astrocytic autophagy in an AD mouse model, we developed AAVs expressing shRNAs for MAP1LC3B/LC3B (LC3B) and Sequestosome1 (SQSTM1) based on AAV-R-CREon vector, which is a Cre recombinase-dependent gene-silencing system. Also, the effect of astrocyte-specific overexpression of LC3B on the neuropathology in AD (APP/PS1) mice was determined. Neuropathological alterations of AD mice with astrocytic autophagy dysfunction were observed by confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Behavioral changes of mice were examined through novel object recognition test (NOR) and novel object place recognition test (NOPR). Results Here, we show that astrocytes, unlike neurons, undergo plastic changes in autophagic processes to remove Aβ. Aβ transiently induces expression of LC3B gene and turns on a prolonged transcription of SQSTM1 gene. The Aβ-induced astrocytic autophagy accelerates urea cycle and putrescine degradation pathway. Pharmacological inhibition of autophagy exacerbates mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in astrocytes. Astrocyte-specific knockdown of LC3B and SQSTM1 significantly increases Aβ plaque formation and GFAP-positive astrocytes in APP/PS1 mice, along with a significant reduction of neuronal marker and cognitive function. In contrast, astrocyte-specific overexpression of LC3B reduced Aβ aggregates in the brain of APP/PS1 mice. An increase of LC3B and SQSTM1 protein is found in astrocytes of the hippocampus in AD patients. Conclusions Taken together, our data indicates that Aβ-induced astrocytic autophagic plasticity is an important cellular event to modulate Aβ clearance and maintain cognitive function in AD mice.

Background Though acute kidney injury (AKI) is a prevalent complication in critically ill patients, knowledge on the epidemiological differences and clinical characteristics of patients with AKI admitted to medical and surgical intensive care units (ICUs) remains limited. Methods Electronic medical records of patients in ICUs in Pusan National University Hospital and Pusan National University Hospital Yangsan, from January 2011 to December 2020, were retrospectively analyzed. Different characteristics of AKI between patients were analyzed. The contribution of AKI to the in-hospital mortality rate was assessed using a Cox proportional hazards model. Results A total of 7,150 patients were included in this study. AKI was more frequent in medical (48.7%) than in surgical patients (19.7%), with the severity of AKI higher in medical patients. In surgical patients, hospital-acquired AKI was more frequent (51.0% vs. 49.0%), whereas community-acquired AKI was more common in medical patients (58.5% vs. 41.5%). 16.9% and 5.9% of medical and surgical patients died in the hospital, respectively. AKI affected patient groups to different degrees. In surgical patients, AKI patients had 4.778 folds higher risk of mortality (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.577–6.382; p < 0.001) than non-AKI patients; whereas in medical AKI patients, it was 1.239 (95% CI, 1.051–1.461; p = 0.01). Conclusion While the prevalence of AKI itself is higher in medical patients, the impact of AKI on mortality was stronger in surgical patients compared to medical patients. This suggests that more attention is needed for perioperative patients to prevent and manage AKI.

Background Continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) is crucial in the management of acute kidney injury in intensive care units (ICUs). Nonetheless, the optimal anticoagulation strategy for patients with bleeding tendencies remains debated. This study aimed to evaluate patient outcomes and safety of nafamostat mesylate (NM) compared with no anticoagulation (NA) in critically ill patients with bleeding tendencies who were undergoing CKRT. Methods This retrospective study enrolled 2,313 patients who underwent CKRT between March 2013 and December 2022 at the third affiliated hospital in South Korea. After applying the exclusion criteria, 490 patients were included in the final analysis, with 245 patients in the NM and NA groups each, following 1:1 propensity score matching. Subsequently, in-hospital mortality, incidence of bleeding complications, agranulocytosis, hyperkalemia, and length of hospital stay were assessed. Results No significant differences were observed between the groups regarding the lengths of hospital and ICU stays or the incidence of agranulocytosis and hyperkalemia. The NM group showed a smaller decrease in hemoglobin levels during CKRT (–1.90 g/dL vs. –2.39 g/dL) and less need for blood product transfusions than the NA group. Furthermore, the NM group exhibited a survival benefit in patients who required transfusion of all three blood products. Conclusion NM is an effective and safe anticoagulant for CKRT in critically ill patients, especially those requiring transfusion of all three blood products. Although these findings are promising, further multicenter studies are needed to validate them and explore the mechanisms underlying the observed benefits.

Background/Aims Sensitization to staphylococcal superantigens (SAgs) could contribute to asthma severity. However, its relevance with eosinophilic phenotype has not yet been clarified. This study aimed to investigate associations between serum specific IgE levels to SAg and eosinophilic airway inflammation in adult asthmatics. Methods The serum specific IgE levels to 3 SAgs, including staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) and B (SEB), and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) were measured by ImmunoCAP in 230 adult asthmatic patients and 50 healthy controls (HCs). Clinical characteristics and laboratory parameters, including serum total/free IgE, and 2 eosinophil-activation markers, eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), and eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN), were analyzed according to blood eosinophil counts (BEC; 150 cells/μL) and serum specific IgE levels to 3 SAgs (0.35 kU/L). Results Asthmatic patients showed higher serum specific IgE levels to 3 SAgs than HCs (p < 0.05 for all). The serum total/clinfree IgE levels were significantly higher in asthmatics with positive IgE responses to 3 SAgs than those without (p < 0.05 for all). There were no significant differences in clinical parameters including age, asthma severity, comorbidities, or smoking according to IgE responses to 3 SAgs. Patients with positive IgE responses to SEB (not to SEA/TSST-1) had higher serum specific IgE levels to house dust mites and ECP/EDN as well as higher BEC with positive correlations between serum SEB-specific IgE levels and BEC/ECP/EDN (p < 0.05 for all). Conclusions These findings suggest that serum SEB-specific IgE levels could contribute to eosinophil activation as well as IgE production in adult asthma.

Abstract The widespread adoption of smartphones coupled with advancements in artificial intelligence has significantly propelled the use of intelligent personal assistants (IPAs). These digital assistants have become indispensable for many users, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Employing coviance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) and analyzing data from 260 participants, this study explores the key factors influencing IPA usage intensity. Contrary to expectations, affective risk perception showed no significant impact on either IPA usage or parasocial interaction during the pandemic. In stark contrast, cabin fever syndrome significantly influenced both IPA usage and parasocial interaction, underscoring the role of environmental and psychological stressors in shaping technology use. Furthermore, loneliness was found to significantly enhance parasocial interaction with IPAs, though it did not affect usage intensity. The findings highlight a substantial connection between parasocial interaction and IPA usage intensity, suggesting that users who engage in human-like interactions with IPAs tend to use them more extensively. These insights not only deepen our understanding of how IPAs are utilized during health crises but also point to potential directions for developing IPAs that are more responsive to users' emotional and social needs.

The bone is the most common location of breast cancer metastasis. Bone metastasis causes pain and skeletal-related events (SREs), and affects the quality of life and survival of breast cancer patients. Bone-modifying agents, including bisphosphonates and denosumab, reduce the risk of SREs in these patients. Among bisphosphonates, zoledronic acid is preferred due to its higher efficacy. Denosumab is marginally more effective than zoledronic acid in reducing the frequency of SREs. Patients with renal impairment should receive zoledronic acid with caution due to nephrotoxicity, and denosumab is an alternative option in these patients. Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a rare but severe complication of both zoledronic acid and denosumab, and all patients should undergo dental examinations before and during treatment. Although these drugs can reduce the risk of SREs in bone metastasis, no significant improvement in survival has been noted. This study reviews the effects and adverse events of bone-modifying agents for the treatment of bone metastasis from breast cancer.

Hematuria is the presence of blood in the urine and is classified as either gross hematuria or microscopic hematuria. There are many causes of hematuria, and the differential diagnosis depends on the presence or absence of comorbidities and whether it is glomerular or non-glomerular. When hematuria in children is symptomatic or persistent, an evaluation of the cause is essential. The causes of hematuria and basic approaches to its diagnosis are discussed in this review.

Abstract Background To solve the problem of workplace bullying among nurses, it is necessary to review the effects of interventions and generalize the findings. We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of cognitive rehearsal programs on workplace bullying among hospital nurses. Methods Data were collected from March 30 to April 11, 2021, and 11,048 journal articles published in South Korea and internationally were examined across eight databases. Nine articles were selected for inclusion in the systematic literature review; five of the nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. For randomized controlled trials, the risk of bias was evaluated, and for non-randomized controlled trials, the study quality was evaluated using the Risk of Bias for Non-randomized Studies version 2.0. Egger’s regression test was performed to determine publication bias. Results Of the nine articles selected for this study, two were randomized controlled trials and seven were non-randomized controlled trials. The I2 value was 18.9%, indicating non-significant heterogeneity. The overall effect size of the cognitive rehearsal programs was -0.40 (95% confidence interval: -0.604 to -0.196; Z = -3.85; p = .0001) in a random-effects model, indicating a large effect size with statistical significance. Conclusions Therefore, cognitive rehearsal programs that address workplace bullying among hospital nurses are effective. Health policymakers must implement cognitive rehearsal programs in a policy manner to address the problems of bullying in the workplace.

Abstract This study evaluated an oscillometric device (OD), Microlife WatchBP Office AFIB, and a hybrid manual auscultatory device (AD), Greenlight 300TM, to determine a suitable blood pressure (BP) measurement device for the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in a mercury‐free context. Adhering to the 2018 Universal Standard's suggested consensus, the study involved 800 subjects (mean age 51.2 ± 17.5 years; 44.3% male), who underwent triplicate BP measurements following 5 min of rest in a randomized order (OD‐first: 398 participants; AD‐first: 402 participants). BP difference was calculated as OD value minus AD value, with results stratified by measurement sequence. The overall BP difference and tolerable error probability were ‐1.1 ± 6.5/‐2.6 ± 4.9 mmHg and 89.2%/92.5% for systolic/diastolic BP (SBP/DBP), respectively. Lin's concordance correlation coefficient was 0.907/0.844 for SBP/DBP (OD‐first/AD‐first: 0.925/0.892 for SBP, 0.842/0.845 for DBP). Abstract Background Intratumoral heterogeneity (ITH) and tumor microenvironment (TME) of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) play important roles in tumor evolution and patient outcomes. However, the precise characterization of diverse cell populations and their crosstalk associated with PDAC progression and metastasis is still challenging. Methods We performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of treatment-naïve primary PDAC samples with and without paired liver metastasis samples to understand the interplay between ITH and TME in the PDAC evolution and its clinical associations. Results scRNA-seq analysis revealed that even a small proportion (22%) of basal-like malignant ductal cells could lead to poor chemotherapy response and patient survival and that epithelial-mesenchymal transition programs were largely subtype-specific. The clonal homogeneity significantly increased with more prevalent and pronounced copy number gains of oncogenes, such as KRAS and ETV1, and losses of tumor suppressor genes, such as SMAD2 and MAP2K4, along PDAC progression and metastasis. Moreover, diverse immune cell populations, including naï ve SELL hi regulatory T cells (Tregs) and activated TIGIT hi Tregs, contributed to shaping immunosuppressive TMEs of PDAC through cellular interactions with malignant ductal cells in PDAC evolution. Importantly, the proportion of basal-like ductal cells negatively correlated with that of immunoreactive cell populations, such as cytotoxic T cells, but positively correlated with that of immunosuppressive cell populations, such as Tregs. Conclusion We uncover that the proportion of basal-like subtype is a key determinant for chemotherapy response and patient outcome, and that PDAC clonally evolves with subtype-specific dosage changes of cancer-associated genes by forming immunosuppressive microenvironments in its progression and metastasis.

The management of metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) or castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC) has become increasingly complex with the tremendous progress that has been made in this space within the past few decades. In the early days of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), ADT monotherapy was the mainstay for treatment of advanced prostate cancer. However, novel hormone therapies in the form of androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPI) have emerged; vaccine therapy, chemotherapy with docetaxel and cabazitaxel, and radioactive ligands have shaped the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer in the last decade. Following the initial approval of several drugs for use in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) in combination with primary ADT, these agents were studied and subsequently approved for use in mCSPC. Therefore, ADT monotherapy no longer constitutes an optimal therapeutic option for otherwise fit patients who present with mCSPC. We focus on the treatment of first-line de novo mHSPC or mCSPC and explore frontline doublet and triplet therapy and the pivotal trials that led to their United States Food and Drug Administration approval.

IntroductionNocardia farcinica is an opportunistic bacterium that causes bovine mastitis and pulmonary, cutaneous, and central nervous system infections in humans. Bovine abortion caused by N. farcinica has been sporadically reported. The purpose of this study was to analyze the pathological findings of bovine abortions caused by N. farcinica in the Republic of Korea and determine the antimicrobial resistance and genotypical characteristics of N. farcinica isolates.Case presentationThree cases of bovine abortions were submitted to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency for differential diagnosis. Grossly, one fetus showed severe lung consolidation following palpation of the entire lobes. Histologically, necrotizing granulomatous interstitial pneumonia was observed in all fetuses; a fetus with a gross lesion demonstrated necrotizing lymphadenitis in the mesenteric lymph nodes and necrotizing dermatitis in the ear. N. farcinica isolates were isolated from the abomasal contents and lungs of all fetuses. Finally, two cases were diagnosed as abortions due to N. farcinica, and one was diagnosed as an N. farcinica abortion coinfected with bovine viral diarrhea virus. According to the multilocus sequence analysis, all isolates were identified as N. farcinica and were determined to be genetically related to isolates from humans. Two N. farcinica isolates were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, which is recommended as the first treatment for human nocardial infections.ConclusionThis is the first pathological report of bovine abortion caused by N. farcinica in the Republic of Korea. Further studies are needed to phenotypically and genotypically characterize N. farcinica isolates with various sources and continuously monitor antimicrobial resistance patterns.

Background Unintended subdural anesthesia accompanied by air bubbles compressing the cauda after attempting epidural anesthesia is rare. Case A 41-year-old pregnant woman was scheduled to undergo epidural anesthesia for cesarean section. After attempting epidural anesthesia, she experienced prolonged hypotension and recovery time, especially in the right extremity. Through magnetic resonance imaging we found subdural air bubbles compressing the right side of the cauda equina in the L3 region. Thus, we considered unintended subdural anesthesia and performed conservative management with close observation. Her symptoms completely resolved within 24 h. Conclusions Here, we report a case with various features of subdural anesthesia and subdural air bubbles compressing the cauda.

Abstract Many individuals have different blood pressure (BP) values in the office setting compared to that outside the office setting. Therefore, confirming hypertension based on office BP (OBP) measurement alone can lead to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. The limitations of OBP measurement have led to the complementary use of out-of-office BP measurements, including 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM). This review aims to describe when and how ABPM or HBPM can be used to accurately diagnose and treat hypertension. Both methods should be performed using validated automated oscillometric devices. To minimize user errors, ABPM should be performed using standard techniques, whereas HBPM requires patient education regarding proper BP measurements. ABPM provides short-term comprehensive information on BP, including daytime, nighttime, morning, and 24-h BP. Therefore, ABPM is recommended for the initial diagnosis of hypertension, assessment of BP phenotypes and circadian patterns, and detection of nocturnal hypertension, Furthermore, ABPM plays a critical role in confirming true resistant hypertension thereby excluding pseudo-resistant hypertension. However, it is not suitable for long-term follow-up of patients with hypertension. In contrast, HBPM involves multiple BP readings taken at specific times during the day and evening over a long period. Therefore, HBPM is recommended for diagnosing hypertension and assessing BP phenotypes. However, this method has limitations in measuring nocturnal BP and circadian BP patterns. HBPM is preferred over ABPM for the long-term follow-up of patients with hypertension. This approach improves patient adherence to treatment and ultimately enhances the rate of control of hypertension. Additionally, both methods play an important role in diagnosing and treating white coat hypertension during pregnancy. Consequently, out-of-office BP measurement is essential to prevent the misdiagnosis and mistreatment of hypertension. However, these two methods offer different information regarding the BP status of an individual, and they indeed show discrepancies in the diagnosis of hypertensive phenotypes. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the advantages and limitations of both ABPM and HBPM to ensure their appropriate use in clinical practice. Graphical Abstract

The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has been gradually increasing in recent years and has become a major health problem. Childhood obesity can readily progress to adult obesity. It is associated with obesity-related comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and the risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It is important to make an accurate assessment of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents with consideration of growth and development. Childhood obesity can then be prevented and treated using an appropriate treatment goal and safe and effective treatment strategies. This article summarizes the clinical practice guidelines for obesity in children and adolescents that are included in the 8th edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity of the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity.

Background As a relatively novel approach to enhancing skeletal muscle health, mixed protein supplementation has shown similar responses to whey protein. However, no previous studies have examined its impact on golf swing performance. This study aimed to examine the effect of mixed protein supplementation on the swing performance and muscle strength of casual golfers.Methods Sixty participants with a handicap of less than 20 were recruited and randomly assigned to a double-blind, placebo-controlled study design. The participants were divided into two groups: a mixed protein group (MG, n = 30), and a placebo control group (CG, n = 30). They were instructed to ingest either a supplement containing casein calcium, whey protein, and isolated pea protein, or a placebo, once daily for 8 weeks. Pre- and posttests consisted of anthropometric measurements, muscle strength (isokinetic knee and trunk strength, and handgrip strength), 2-minute push-ups, balance, and golf swing performance using a driver and 7-iron.Results After the 8-week supplementation period, ANCOVA, using baseline values as covariates, revealed significant differences for driver distance (p = .004) and driver ball speed (p .05).Conclusion The intake of a mixed protein containing both animal and plant proteins had positive effects on golf performance and muscle function. Therefore, mixed proteins may represent a safe and effective approach to enhancing skeletal muscle health in golf players.

We integrated transparent antireflective coatings and transparent electrodes onto flexible colorless polyimide (CPI) substrates to fabricate high-performance flexible perovskite solar cells. Multifunctional PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrates were fabricated by sputtering the optimal plasma-polymerized fluorocarbon (PPFC) antireflective coating and InGaTiO (IGTO) electrode films on both sides of the CPI substrate. By applying PPFC with a low refractive index (1.38) as an antireflective coating, the transparency of the PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrate increased by an additional 1.2%. In addition, owing to the amorphous characteristics of the PPFC and IGTO layers, the PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrate showed constant sheet resistance and transmittance change even after 10,000 cycles during the bending tests. The flexible perovskite solar cells, fabricated on the PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrate, exhibited an increase in current density of 1.48 mA/cm2 after the deposition of the PPFC antireflective coating. These results confirmed that the PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrate was durable against high-temperature treatment, flexible, and exhibited excellent electrical characteristics. This enhanced the efficiency and durability of the flexible perovskite solar cells. Moreover, the hydrophobic PPFC layer allowed the self-cleaning of inflexible perovskite solar cells. Given these attributes, the PPFC/CPI/IGTO structure has been recognized as a good choice for multifunctional substrates of flexible perovskite solar cells, presenting the potential for enhancing performance.
