Individuals, communities, and societies ascribe a diverse array of values to landscapes. These values are shaped by the aesthetic, cultural, and recreational benefits and services provided by those landscapes. However, across the globe, processes such as urbanization, agricultural intensification, and abandonment are threatening landscape integrity, altering the personally meaningful connections people have toward specific places. Existing methods used to study landscape values, such as social surveys, are poorly suited to capture dynamic landscape-scale processes across large geographic extents. Social media data, by comparison, can be used to indirectly measure and identify valuable features of landscapes at a regional, continental, and perhaps even worldwide scale. We evaluate the usefulness of different social media platforms-- Panoramio, Flickr, and Instagram--and quantify landscape values at a continental scale. We find Panoramio, Flickr, and Instagram data can be used to quantify landscape values, with features of Instagram being especially suitable due to its relatively large population of users and its functional ability of allowing users to attach personally meaningful comments and hashtags to their uploaded images. Although Panoramio, Flickr, and Instagram have different user profiles, our analysis revealed similar patterns of landscape values across Europe across the three platforms. We also found variables describing accessibility, population density, income, mountainous terrain, or proximity towater explained a significant portion of observed variation across data from the different platforms. Social media data can be used to extend our understanding of how and where individuals ascribe value to landscapes across diverse social, political, and ecological boundaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Astrobiology is a multidisciplinary field of research, which encompasses scientists ranging from cosmology, astronomy, planetary sciences, physics, chemistry, geology, paleontology to biology. In order to map the existing astrobiological expertise in Europe a comprehensive community consultation has been performed within the AstRoMap (Astrobiology Road Mapping) project that is supported by the European Commission FP7 framework. From this information a data base of scientists (European and beyond) interested in astrobiology and planetary exploration (see: http://www.astromap.eu/database.html ) has been established. It reflects the demography and research and teaching activities of the astrobiology community, as well as their professional profiles and involvement in astrobiology projects. The database provides an ideal platform for networking between scientists interested in the various fields of astrobiology. Considering future aspects of astrobiology in Europe, the need for more astrobiology-dedicated funding programs at the EU level, especially for cross-disciplinary groups, was stressed. This might eventually lead to the creation of a European laboratory of Astrobiology, or even of a European Astrobiology Institute. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article I set about describing current practices in archiving and reusing qualitative data. I discuss where can you find archived sources of qualitative data, and discuss some of the debates surrounding methodological, ethical and theoretical considerations relating to re-using data. I then address more pragmatic issues involved acquiring, preserving, providing access to and supporting the use of the data. Where best do qualitative data collections sit—in traditional libraries or archives alongside historical documents or as part of more holistic digital collections of contemporary social science research resources? This question relates to accessibility, resource discovery and cataloging methods, data preparation and documentation and promotional and outreach efforts to encourage data use. The ESDS Qualidata unit at the UK Data Archive is used as case study for showcasing archival practices, and is situated within the broader European landscape of social science-oriented data archives. Infrastructure requirements for running an archive are discussed and a look forward future developments. URN: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs1103117

For more than 12,000 years, humans have modified, changed, and even destroyed many natural ecosystems in a large part of Europe, especially forest ecosystems. This evolution resulted in a European territory characterised by diversified rural landscapes where we can generally distinguish three complementary parts including cultivated space, pastoral space and forest space. These systems connecting natural, modified ecosystems with agro-systems could have an interesting biological diversity. Since the middle of the 20th century, the modernisation of agriculture, and the extension of single crop and industrial breeding have completely changed this vision again. According to the evolution that we imposed on nature, the disappearance or the regression of certain species, the invasion by foreign species, we can discuss our strategy to preserve the future of the natural patrimony, biodiversity, the ecosystem's functioning and services. Using the Mont-Saint-Michel bay case study and the National Park of Banc d'Arguin registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, we try to show that long-term multidisciplinary research is necessary to provide new knowledge and we propose a new system of management for complex ecosystems with users, stakeholders and elected members. The concept of landscape identity is often referred to in landscape policy and planning. A clear definition of the concept is lacking however. This is problematic because the term ‘landscape identity’ can have many different meanings and thus easily lead to confusion. We define landscape identity as ‘the perceived uniqueness of a place’ and endeavour to describe the content of this definition more concisely. Within this context the paper introduces the framework of the Landscape Identity Circle for the various dimensions of landscape identity based on two axes: differentiation between spatial as opposed to existential identity, and differentiation between personal and cultural landscape identity. This framework is valuable in positioning research approaches and disciplines addressing landscape identity.

AbstractSince 2008 the European Landscape Convention 2000 (CEP2000) is in force in Spain, which commits to its fulfillment. The landscape competences in the Spanish case are transferred to the autonomous communities. Having, these, the obligation to fulfill, enforce and develop in their respective administrative areas the CEP2000. The Region of Murcia is not foreign to this situation so the regional administration has generated various documents (administrative-legal) related to the CEP2000. These are: Landscape Strategy, Landscape Atlas, Landscape Regional Studies and Land and Urban Planning Law. This paper reviews and analyzes the institutional, administrative and legislative documentation that can constitute a theoretical-referential framework for the protection, management and landscape management of the Region of Murcia. Taking into account international, national and regional texts. It has been verified the existence of sufficient documentation for the establishment of a minimum frame-reference that allows an appropriate treatment of the landscape. We can see the evolution from a sectoral conception of the landscape to a more holistic one. It is remarkable the updating of the Region of Murcia, through the recent approval (2015) of a law where the questions on the landscape are collected.

In this article I set about describing current practices in archiving and reusing qualitative data. NATIVE American poetry , *EUROPE in literature - Abstract
The relationship between Europeans and American Indians is normally conceptualized as one in which European gazes distort Native cultures, moulding them to fit the ideal of what Robert Berkhofer calls 'The White Man's Indian'. But in the past half-century it has increasingly been Native Americans who have been the gazing agents, and many Native poets have now set poems or entire collections of poetry in Europe. Examining poems from writers including Simon Ortiz, Jim Barnes, Drucilla Wall, Luci Tapahonso, Joy Harjo, Sherman Alexie, Gerald Vizenor, Ralph Salisbury and James Thomas Stevens, I demonstrate that the Europe emerging from their work is, perhaps surprisingly, overwhelmingly seen as a place of welcome and pleasure - even when dark histories of colonization and Holocaust are recognized. Focusing on themes of land and hospitality, I argue that Native writers often use Europe as a space from which to critique American cultural hegemony. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
