1. Telerehabilitation improves cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness and body composition in older people with post‐COVID‐19 syndrome

Abstract: Abstract Background The effects of post‐coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) syndrome on the cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness in older people are of utmost relevance. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 12‐week telerehabilitation programme on cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness and body composition in older patients with post‐COVID‐19 syndrome. Methods One hundred twenty older patients with post‐COVID‐19 syndrome were randomly assigned to one of two groups: patients who carried out the telerehabilitation programme (n = 60; age: 65.0 ± 5.2; female: 14.2%) and a control group (n = 60; age: 64.3 ± 5.0; female: 24.5%). An incremental cardiopulmonary exercise testing, isokinetic strength test, and bioelectrical impedance analysis were performed to compare cardiorespiratory and muscle strength responses and body composition between telerehabilitation and control groups. Results A significant increase in the cardiopulmonary exercise testing duration was found in the telerehabilitation group compared to the control group (mean difference = 88.9 s, P = 0.001). Abstract: Abstract Background Many patients with COVID-19 present the so-called post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 such as fatigue, post-stress discomfort, dyspnea, headache, pain mental impairment, incapacity to perform daily physical tasks ant exercise intolerance. This study aims to investigate the effects of different exercise programs on physical and mental fitness, physical condition and biomarkers of the immune system and oxidative stress in older patients with post-COVID-19 sequelae. Methods The sample will be made up of 120 eligible participants, over the age of 60 years who have had COVID-19 disease and are survivors and present persistent COVID-19 symptomatology diagnosed by the corresponding physician. The participants will be randomly assigned to the experimental groups: supervised endurance group (SEG, n = 30), supervised strength group (SSG, n = 30), supervised concurrent group (SCG, n = 30), which will perform the corresponding exercise program 3 days a week compared to the control group (CG, n = 30), which will not carry out a supervised exercise program. The design of this project will include measurements of four relevant dimensions; 1) Cardiorespiratory fitness; 2) Muscle fitness; 3) Pain and mental health; and 4) Biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress. Conclusions The results of this study will provide insights into the effects of different exercise programs on physical and mental fitness, physical condition and biomarkers of the immune system and oxidative stress in older patients with post-COVID-19 sequelae. These findings may be the basis for the formulation of health plans and rehabilitation programs that allow healthy aging and a reduction in the associated morbidity in patients with post-COVID-19 sequelae. Más allá de la retórica laudatoria, la elección de esta nómina responde a la visión filógina del autor, admirador de las mujeres instruidas en los estudios liberales humanistas a las que ensalza como escritoras pero, sobre todo, como lectoras. El papel de las figuras femeninas se destaca en esta obra, no solo en temas amorosos sino también en temas filosóficos o políticos, lo que refleja su posición filógina en favor de la educación y de la cultura hecha por mujeres dentro del debate de la Querella de las Mujeres. Las dedicatarias de Alessandro Piccolomini contituyen toda una generación de mujeres cultas, filósofas o escritoras y de mujeres dedicadas a la cultura como mecenas, relacionadas entre sí por lazos de amistad o intereses políticos y religiosos comunes.

Abstract: Abstract This study aimed to assess pulmonary and muscle dysfunction by analyzing the slow component of oxygen uptake (VO2SC), and mechanical and ventilatory efficiency in adult women recovered from the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type II (SARS-CoV-2) during a constant load test. 32 women (N = 17 patients with SARS-CoV-2; N = 15 control group) performed two cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPX) on a cycle ergometer. In the first test, the participants performed incremental CPX until extenuation. In the second test the participants performed a 10-min CPX at a constant load intensity (watts) corresponding to the first ventilatory threshold. There was a 48–72 h rest period between the two tests. 5. Mapping gender stereotypes: a network analysis approach

Abstract: IntroductionStereotypes have traditionally been considered as “mental pictures” of a particular social group. The current research aims to draw the structure of gender stereotypes and metastereotype schemes as complex systems of stereotypical features. Therefore, we analyze gender stereotypes as networks of interconnected characteristics.MethodThrough an online survey (N = 750), participants listed the common female and male features to build the structure of the gender stereotypes. Participants also listed the common features of how members of one gender think they are viewed by people of the other gender to build the structure of gender metastereotypes.ResultsOur results suggest that female stereotypes are characterized by a single community of features consistently associated such as intelligent, strong, and hardworkers. Female metastereotype, however, combines the previous community with another characterized by weak and sensitive. On the contrary, the male stereotype projected by women is characterized by a community of features associated such as intelligent, strong, and hardworker, but male in-group stereotypes and metastereotypes projected by men are a combination of this community with another one characterized by features associated such as strong, chauvinist, and aggressive.DiscussionA network approach to studying stereotypes provided insights into the meaning of certain traits when considered in combination with different traits. (e.g., strong-intelligent vs. strong-aggressive). Thus, focusing on central nodes can be critical to understanding and changing the structure of gender stereotypes.

6. Motives for using social networks and social network addiction in a time of pandemic

Abstract: The lockdown situation caused by COVID-19 has increased the use of social networks, which could, in turn, increase social networks addiction. This research consists of two integrated studies aimed at (1) developing and validating the Social Networks Motives Scale (SN-MotiveS) and (2) examining the relationships between the frequency of use of social networks and the motives for why individuals use social networks with social networks addiction, as well as the evolution of these variables over time before (through a retrospective assessment), during, and after lockdown. During lockdown, an online questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 482 participants (Study 1). After lockdown, 114 participants from Study 1 completed a second online questionnaire, forming a longitudinal study (Study 2). Study 1 showed a robust fit for the multifactorial structure of the SN-MotiveS with four factors (socialization, escapism, prosocial behavior, and self-presentation), supporting the external validity of the scale, and the expected correlation patterns were found with social networks frequency of use, abuse, and addiction. Study 2 showed that all the motives increased during lockdown except for self-presentation, whereas after lockdown only prosocial behavior and employment (added in Study 2) decreased significantly. Moreover, the self-presentation and escapism motives acted as mediators in the relationship between social networks frequency of use and social networks addiction. This research provides a reliable instrument to measure the motives for using social networks both during a pandemic and in normal times. In addition, it highlights the importance of paying special attention to escapism motives for predicting social networks addiction in periods of lockdown.

Abstract: Abstract Background There is limited information about the impact of coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) on the muscular dysfunction, despite the generalized weakness and fatigue that patients report after overcoming the acute phase of the infection. This study aimed to detect impaired muscle efficiency by evaluating delta efficiency (DE) in patients with COVID‐19 compared with subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), and control group (CG). Methods A total of 60 participants were assigned to four experimental groups: COVID‐19, COPD, IHD, and CG (n = 15 each group). Incremental exercise tests in a cycle ergometer were performed to obtain peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). DE was obtained from the end of the first workload to the power output where the respiratory exchange ratio was 1. Results A lower DE was detected in patients with COVID‐19 and COPD compared with those in CG (P ≤ 0.033). However, no significant differences were observed among the experimental groups with diseases (P > 0.05). 8. What about diversity? The effect of organizational economic inequality on the perceived presence of women and ethnic minority groups.

Abstract: Economic inequality shapes the degree to which people and different social groups are perceived in stereotypical ways. Our research sought to investigate the impact of the perception of economic inequality in an organizational setting on expectations of social diversity in the organization's workforce, across the dimensions of gender and ethnicity. Combining data from previous experiments, we first explored in one set of studies (Studies 1a and 1b; N = 378) whether the degree of economic inequality in a fictitious organization affected participants' expectations of the representation of minority vs. majority group employees. We found that when we presented an organization with unequal (vs. equal) distribution of economic wealth amongst its employees to study participants, they expected the presence of men and White majority individuals to be larger than the presence of women and ethnic minorities. Second, we tested our hypotheses and replicated these initial effects in a pre-registered study (Study 2: N = 449). Moreover, we explored the potential mediating role of perceived diversity climate, that is, the perception that the organization promotes and deals well with demographic diversity. Findings revealed that an organizational setting that distributed resources unequally (vs. equally) was associated with a more adverse diversity climate, which, in turn, correlated with expectations of a lower presence of minority group employees in the organization. We concluded that economic inequality creates a context that modulates perceptions of a climate of social exclusion which likely affects the possibilities for members of disadvantaged groups to participate and develop in organizations.

9. A More Competent, Warm, Feminine, and Human Leader: Perceptions and Effectiveness of Democratic Versus Authoritarian Political Leaders

Abstract: Nowadays, to the detriment of democratic leaders, the emergence of authoritarian leaders has drastically modified the political sphere. This project aims to shed light on this issue by analysing how the perceived effectiveness of democratic and authoritarian political leaders are shaped by the common dimensions of social perception, such as competence/warmth, masculinity/femininity, and human uniqueness/human nature. Accordingly, three experimental studies were conducted. In Study 1 ('n' = 1001), we revealed that democratic leaders are perceived as more competent, warm, feminine and human. In Study 2 ('n' = 548) and Study 3 ('n' = 622), we investigated whether these dimensions of perception mediated the relationship between leaders and their perceived effectiveness. The results revealed that democratic leaders are perceived as effective in cooperative scenarios due to their competence, femininity, and human nature. Alternatively, democratic leaders are preferred in ambiguous contexts due to their competence and cognitive flexibility, that is, human nature. In contrast, authoritarian leaders are perceived as effective in competitive scenarios because of their masculinity. In Study 3, we manipulated the (in)stability of socio-economic contexts. The results revealed that democratic and authoritarian leaders are perceived as more competent, warm, human and more effective in socio-economic contexts that are stable compared with those that are unstable. The implications of the results regarding the emergence of authoritarian leaders are discussed.

10. Excessive E2F Transcription in Single Cancer Cells Precludes Transient Cell-Cycle Exit after DNA Damage

Abstract: Summary: E2F transcription factors control the expression of cell-cycle genes. Cancers often demonstrate enhanced E2F target gene expression, which can be explained by increased percentages of replicating cells. However, we demonstrate in human cancer biopsy specimens that individual neoplastic cells display abnormally high levels of E2F-dependent transcription. To mimic this situation, we delete the atypical E2F repressors (E2F7/8) or overexpress the E2F3 activator in untransformed cells. Cells with elevated E2F activity during S/G2 phase fail to exit the cell cycle after DNA damage and undergo mitosis. In contrast, wild-type cells complete S phase and then exit the cell cycle by activating the APC/CCdh1 via repression of the E2F target Emi1. Many arrested wild-type cells eventually inactivate APC/CCdh1 to execute a second round of DNA replication and mitosis, thereby becoming tetraploid. Cells with elevated E2F transcription fail to exit the cell cycle after DNA damage, which potentially causes genomic instability, promotes malignant progression, and reduces drug sensitivity.

11. Connecting perceived economic threat and prosocial tendencies: The explanatory role of empathic concern.

Abstract: Recent research suggests that perceived economic threat constitutes a valid predictor of people's attitudes and behaviors. While accumulated empirical evidence has mostly underlined the deleterious psychological effects (e.g., reduced psychological well-being) of perceived economic threat in times of economic strain, we postulate that individuals experiencing higher economic threat linked to the Spanish economic crisis are more prone to engage in other-beneficial prosocial behavior. Across two independently collected community samples, we tested this theoretical formulation and examined the potential mediating roles of empathic concern (Studies 1 & 2) and identification (Study 2). Study 1 (N = 306) revealed that participants who descended in the social scale due to the negative national economic context were engaged in a larger number of helping behaviors over the last three months compared to participants who did not descend the social ladder-independently of several sociodemographic and ideological factors. Moreover, our data indicated these effects were driven by increased empathic concern. Study 2 (N = 588), in which two hypothetical helping-behavior scenarios were randomly administered (crisis-related vs. control), showed that participants under high perceived financial threat exhibited an undifferentiated pattern of prosociality. However, moderated-mediation analyses indicated that empathic concern explained the perceived financial threat-helping behavior link in the hypothetical crisis-related scenario but not in the hypothetical control scenario. Together, these findings extend prior literature on the psychosocial effects of perceived economic threat and the determinants of other-oriented behavior. Implications of these findings and suggestions for further research are discussed.

12. Economic Inequality and Masculinity–Femininity: The Prevailing Perceived Traits in Higher Unequal Contexts Are Masculine

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that economic inequality influences psychological processes. In this article, we argue that economic inequality also makes masculine attributes more prototypical. In Study 1 (N = 106), using an experimental design, we showed that individuals belonging to a society characterized by a higher level of economic inequality are perceived as more masculine than feminine. Study 2 (N = 75) shows, also experimentally, that the upper social class is perceived mostly in terms of masculine traits, and that this effect is greater when economic inequality is relatively high. Conversely, the lower social class is more clearly perceived in terms of feminine traits. These results inform our understanding of the impact of economic inequality on social perception.

13. Canine Epithelial Skin Tumours: Expression of the Stem Cell Markers Lgr5, Lgr6 and Sox9 in Light of New Cancer Stem Cell Theories

Abstract: Evidence is accumulating that tumour development is driven by cancer stem cells (CSCs). In order to understand the presence and potential contribution of stem cells (SCs) as tumour-initiating cells in canine cutaneous tumours, we selected three putative SC markers (Lgr5, Lgr6 and Sox9) and investigated their expression pattern, level of protein and mRNA expression, in 43 canine hair follicle (HF) and 18 canine cutaneous epidermal tumours by immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR, using normal skin samples as controls. Lgr5 protein expression was not detected in epidermal and HF tumours; however, Lgr5 mRNA overexpression was evident in some HF tumours. Sox9 was expressed in several tumour cases, both at the protein and mRNA level. The Lgr6 antibody tested was not suitable for formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples, but Lgr6 gene showed higher expression in several samples of both HF and epidermal tumours compared with normal skin. Significantly higher mRNA expression levels of the three SC markers were found in trichoblastomas (TB) compared with basal cell carcinomas (BCC). The present results indicated that canine HF and epidermal tumours might have common tumour-initiating cells. The mRNA expression of the three selected SC markers, especially Lgr5, could be potentially useful in the distinction between canine TB and BCC.

14. Atypical E2f functions are critical for pancreas polyploidization.

Abstract: The presence of polyploid cells in the endocrine and exocrine pancreas has been reported for four decades. In rodents, pancreatic polyploidization is initiated after weaning and the number of polyploid cells increases with age. Surprisingly the molecular regulators and biological functions of polyploidization in the pancreas are still unknown. We discovered that atypical E2f activity is essential for polyploidization in the pancreas, using an inducible Cre/LoxP approach in new-born mice to delete ubiquitously the atypical E2f transcription factors, E2f7 and E2f8. In contrast to its critical role in embryonic survival, conditional deletion of both of both atypical E2fs in newborn mice had no impact on postnatal survival and mice lived until old age. However, deficiency of E2f7 or E2f8 alone was sufficient to suppress polyploidization in the pancreas and associated with only a minor decrease in blood serum levels of glucose, insulin, amylase and lipase under 4 hours starvation condition compared to wildtype littermates. In mice with fewer pancreatic polyploid cells that were fed ad libitum, no major impact on hormones or enzymes levels was observed. In summary, we identified atypical E2fs to be essential for polyploidization in the pancreas and discovered that postnatal induced loss of both atypical E2fs in many organs is compatible with life until old age.

Abstract: Los documentos personales, cuadernos de anotaciones, agendas telefónicas, agendas anuales, correspondencia y diarios revelan detalles de la vida íntima de las escritoras e intelectuales españolas exiliadas que permiten descubrir las redes que entablaron cuando llegaron a su nuevo país. En el presente artículo se cotejarán diversas fuentes primarias para poder reconstruir una red femenina que se fraguó en Buenos Aires durante los primeros años de la contienda y la década de los 40, en la que se encontraban escritoras como Elena Fortún y Victorina Durán. Este análisis permitirá establecer las complicidades intelectuales y personales producidas entre españolas y argentinas. Además, saldrán a la luz nombres casi desconocidos de artistas argentinas que ayudaron a las exiliadas a encontrar trabajo, contactar con editoriales, periódicos o galerías de arte, moverse por la ciudad y, en definitiva, a sentirse acogidas y en familia en una etapa de profundo desarraigo. Se pretende cubrir el vacío existente en los estudios del exilio, ya que hasta la fecha este círculo no ha sido investigado en profundidad. Acercarnos a esta red femenina permite comprender las experiencias de estas intelectuales durante su exilio, percibir influencias entre sus obras y también abre una posible línea de investigación sobre la vida y la obra de las artistas argentinas, prácticamente desconocidas, que establecieron alianzas con este pequeño grupo de exiliadas.

Abstract: International audience; The massive shift towards teleworking during the COVID pandemic relatively deteriorated working conditions of people occupying positions that could not be teleworked because they were more exposed to the risk of infection. Exploiting French data, we analyse the differential changes in sorting across occupations of immigrants and natives during years preceding the pandemic. Immigrants sorted relatively more into occupations intensive in non-routine manual tasks. These occupations cannot be teleworked. We find an increase in immigrants' sorting into occupations intensive in non-routine interactive and analytical tasks. However, in contrast with natives, immigrants were moving away from occupations intensively using new technologies.

Abstract: Although several scholars and international institutions have considered high levels of economic inequality an issue for society, the populations who live in more unequal countries tend to be less concerned about it. Given the ideological connotations in the construct of people’s concerns about economic inequality, whether those who live in more unequal countries are more interested in economic inequality remains unclear. In this research, we aimed to examine whether objective economic inequality is related to individuals’ interest in the topic of economic inequality. First, we used data from the United States Census Bureau and Google Trends to examine whether the objective level of economic inequality predicted the interest of the population in searching Google for terms such as “economic inequality” and “income inequality.” Our results showed that individuals who live in more economically unequal U.S. states more often search these terms. Second, we analysed the tweets that contained the terms “economic inequality” and “income inequality” (10,118 tweets) published over 9 days and localised by U.S. state. We found that individuals who live in more economically unequal U.S. states more often post tweets about economic and income inequality. To take a closer look at the narrative around economic/income inequality, we conducted a network analysis using tweets as nodes and retweets as edges. Our results suggest that the public narrative about economic inequality via Twitter was built on three large communities. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results in relation to economic inequality consequences.

Abstract: Purpose On March 16, 2020, the Spanish government declared a state of alarm due to the rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were restricted to remain confined at home, and medical visits were cancelled for 3 months. The impact of this lockdown on the manifestations of COPD and the quality-of-life of these patients has not been explored. Patients and methods One hundred patients with COPD were interviewed by telephone from May 2-18, 2020. The interviews included questions about the lockdown, missed medical appointments, fears of the disease, possible COVID-19 infection, and exacerbations of COPD suffered during this period and their management. In addition, the COPD Assessment Test, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression, and the 5-Dimension Euro Quality-of-Life questionnaires were administered. Results Sixty-four (64%) patients claimed to have strictly complied with the lockdown, and only 42 (42%) stated they had left home at least once during lockdown. Only one patient (1%) was hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 13 (13%) patients presented an exacerbation of COPD self-managed at home with no admissions due to exacerbation of COPD during this period. A medical consultation or complementary test was cancelled in 90% of the patients, but 61% had a medical telephone visit with a high degree of satisfaction (mean 9.3/10). Most patients declared that their feeling regarding lung disease and general health was similar or even better during lockdown (82% and 81%, respectively). Conclusion Our results indicate that in general lockdown had a low impact on COPD patients. Only one patient was affected by COVID-19, but moderate exacerbations of COPD were not infrequent. Although many medical visits and test were cancelled, patients were very satisfied with the medical telephone visits.

Abstract: The Toba volcano super-eruption on the island of Sumatra occurred about 74,000 years ago[1], close to the transition between interglacial Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 and glacial MIS 4. This eruption, called Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT), is currently described as the largest cataclysmic eruption of the Quaternary. However, the impact of this super-eruption on climate is widely debated and its effects on the ocean remains poorly understood.The aim of this work is to estimate its impact on oceanic pH at a site near the eruption center. To do so, we measured δ11B values (pH proxy) on monospecific samples of planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber and Pulleniatina obliquiloculata from sediment core BAR94-25 (Andaman Sea) using a recently developed method at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP)[2]. G. ruber is a species that thrives preferentially in surface waters, while P. obliquiloculata lives at the thermocline. Therefore, δ11B measurements on their shells can reconstruct pH variations in surface and thermocline waters, respectively.We selected the interval from 258 to 355 cm, corresponding to an age between 57 and 82 ka. This interval contains two clearly visible tephra layers corresponding to the YTT, at the transition from MIS 5 to MIS 4, and to a post-YTT explosive activity during MIS 4. These layers are correlated with a significant decrease in carbonate content (CaCO3). Our results indicate a complex pH response during the two concerned volcanic episodes. Thermocline seawater doesn’t show significant pH decrease during the volcanic episodes compared to the overall signal recorded throughout the studied interval. Conversely, surface seawater shows a much more important pH decrease during part of the volcanic episodes than during the all studied interval. Such decrease in pH during the transition to a glacial state is particularly surprising because an increase in pH, due to the global reduction in atmospheric CO2, is rather expected, as shown by previous foraminifera δ11B records[3].The coupling of CaCO3 and pH decrease during tephra levels suggests acidification in the Andaman Sea as a consequence of the Toba volcanic eruptive activity. The seawater surface seems much more sensitive to pH changes than the thermocline zone. However, the reduction of carbonate in the two tephra layers may also be due to dilution from ash falling into the sediment. Abstract: International audience; This paper evaluates the effect on mental health of consecutive terrorist attacks in France in 2015 and 2016. We compile information about the three main terrorist attacks that struck France over this period and assess whether the potential effect on mental health (i.e., depression) of a terrorist attack is smoothed once people consider terrorist attacks as “the new normality.” We exploit data from the French Constances epidemiological survey and combine an event study strategy with a difference-in-difference approach to compare before-after changes in mental health the year of the attack with the same changes the year before. We show that the negative effect of a terrorist attack on mental health decreases over time from one attack to another, and disappears completely for the last attack. Socio-demographic composition of the sample, geographical or socio-demographic proximity to the victims or media exposure do not arise as factors responsible for this changing effect of terrorist attacks on mental health.

Abstract: This paper evaluates if same-sex marriage (SSM) laws, approved in several European Union countries over the past decades, have contributed to favor gay-friendly opinions among people depending on their social interactions. We propose a dyadic model in which individuals learn about the social norm conveyed by a law through strong and weak ties. We show that the relative importance of these social ties in shaping individuals’ opinions depends on the alignment between the law and the local social norm. Using the 2002–2016 European Social Surveys, we test the theoretical predictions with a pseudo-panel dynamic difference-in-difference setting relying on the progressive adoption of SSM in European countries. We show that strong ties induce a lower increase in gay-friendly opinions following the adoption of SSM when the law is aligned with the local social norm. When the law clashes with this norm, strong ties induce a larger increase. (JEL J12, J18, K36, Z1).

Abstract: Background and purpose Oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy (OIN) implies axonal damage of both small and large sensory nerve fibers. We aimed at comparing the neurophysiological changes occurred after treatment and the capability to recovery based on histological marker of re-innervation GAP-43. Methods 48 patients with cancer were assessed before and after chemotherapy (at 3 months and 12 months if available). We recorded ulnar and sural sensory nerve action potentials (SNAP), determined quantitative sensory thresholds for warm and cold (WDT, CDT), pain thresholds and collected a distal biopsy of skin to assess the intra-epidermal nerve fiber density (IENFD) with PGP9.5 and GAP-43 markers (in a subgroup of 19 patients). Results Increased WDT and CDT as well as diminished IENFD at distal leg were already found in 30% of oncologic patients before treatment. After oxaliplatin, there was a significant increase in thermal thresholds in 52% of patients, and a decrease of SNAP amplitude in the sural nerve in 67% patients. IENFD was reduced in 47% and remained unchanged in 37% after oxiplatin. The density of GAP-43 + fibers and GAP-43/PGP 9.5 ratio was similar before and after treatment showing that cutaneous re-innervation is preserved despite no clinical recovery was observed after one year. Conclusion Non-selective axonal loss affects sensory fibers in OIN. However, the presence of intra-epidermal regenerative sprouts detected by GAP-43 may reduce the impact of neurotoxicity in the small fibers with long-term sequelae mostly on myelinated nerve endings. Pre-oxaliplatin GAP-43 failed to identify patients with higher risk of damage or worse recovery after treatment.

Abstract: Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in less egalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N = 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index). Findings show that in more egalitarian countries, gender gaps in agency are smaller and gender gaps in communality are larger. These patterns are driven primarily by cross-country differences in men’s self-views and by the Power Distance Index (PDI) more robustly than the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI). Abstract: The cell cycle control system ensures that the genome is properly duplicated and evenly distributed over the daughter cells. This system is highly conserved and regulated by a plethora of genes. Among this regulatory system is the Rb-E2F network, which controls the expression of key cell cycle genes. Thus, it is not surprising that Rb is often lost or mutated in cancer, resulting in hyperactivated E2F transcription and enhanced tumorigenesis. To counteract enhanced E2F transcription, alternative mechanisms that inhibit E2F transcription to efficiently block proliferation of cancer cells are needed. In this thesis, we manipulated E2F-dependent transcription by altering the expression of E2F7 and E2F8 in mouse models. E2F7/8 are atypical cell cycle inhibitors belonging to the E2F family that possess Rb-independent repressive function. We hypothesized that overactivation of atypical E2F repressors efficiently blocks cancer cell proliferation. The studies from this thesis demonstrated that downregulation of E2F transcription by boosting E2F7/8 expression impaired the ability of liver cancer cells to progress through the cell cycle and suppressed tumor growth. In addition, unrestrained E2F dependent transcription due to loss of atypical E2Fs and RB, induced tumorigenesis in a tissue cell-type specific manner via a mechanism that involves maintenance of genomic instability. Lastly, we unravel novel functions of atypical E2Fs in lipid metabolism by controlling liver polyploidization. Taken together, this thesis has contributed to our understanding of the role of atypical E2Fs and Rb in cancer and provides scientific evidence that inhibition of E2F-depedent transcription could be a novel therapeutic option in oncology .

Estudios previos han mostrado que la desigualdad económica se asocia con variables psicosociales, siendo una de ellas cómo se percibe a las personas que viven en esa sociedad. En una reciente investigación experimental evaluamos esa percepción utilizando las dos dimensiones tradicionales de género: la masculinidad y la feminidad. Los resultados mostraron que un alto nivel de desigualdad económica nos lleva a percibir a la gente que vive en esa sociedad como más masculinos.

Abstract: This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation for the R&D project "Clase social y crisis economica/sanitaria: Consecuencias interpersonales y sociopoliticas" [PID2020-114464RB-I00 (MINECO/AEI/FEDER/UE)], and by the Vice-Rectorate of Research and Transfer of the University of Granada for the Young Researchers Precompetitive Project "Leadership in times of crisis: Analysis of leadership profiles and their perceived usefulness in the resolution of psychosocial conflicts (ref: PPJIB2018-22).", Nowadays, to the detriment of democratic leaders, the emergence of authoritarian leaders has drastically modified the political sphere. This project aims to shed light on this issue by analysing how the perceived effectiveness of democratic and authoritarian political leaders are shaped by the common dimensions of social perception, such as competence/warmth, masculinity/femininity, and human uniqueness/human nature. Accordingly, three experimental studies were conducted. In Study 1 (n = 1001), we revealed that democratic leaders are perceived as more competent, warm, feminine and human. In Study 2 (n = 548) and Study 3 (n = 622), we investigated whether these dimensions of perception mediated the relationship between leaders and their perceived effectiveness. The results revealed that democratic leaders are perceived as effective in cooperative scenarios due to their competence, femininity, and human nature. Alternatively, democratic leaders are preferred in ambiguous contexts due to their competence and cognitive flexibility, that is, human nature. In contrast, authoritarian leaders are perceived as effective in competitive scenarios because of their masculinity. In Study 3, we manipulated the (in)stability of socio-economic contexts. The results revealed that democratic and authoritarian leaders are perceived as more competent, warm, human and more effective in socio-economic contexts that are stable compared with those that are unstable. Abstract: https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU21/EGU21-15712.html; International audience; This study presents new high-resolution reconstructions of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) obtained from alkenones off the coast of North West Africa between 19 °N and xx 27°N latitude. Sediment grain-size distributions were also generated to provide new information on the Moroccan and Mauritanian upwelling zone over the Industrial Era. Our data shows that over the past two centuries, SSTs gradually increased in the southernmost cores, while in the northernmost sites they show cooling. Changes in sea level pressure and temperature gradients between land and sea would have caused major changes in atmospheric circulation by disrupting and intensifying the system of North-East winds (Trade winds) and southwest Monsoon winds. With global warming, increase in the monsoon might be expected, causing the weakening easterly winds favorable to the formation of upwellings. Enhanced stratification of the water column would prevent upwelling to develop accounting for surface water warming with consequences on the ecosystems and fisheries.

42. Economic inequality shapes the agency–communion content of gender stereotypes

Abstract: Economic inequality is a main issue in current societies, and it affects people’s psychological processes. In this research, we propose that perceived economic inequality might affect how people perceive men and women. In two experiments carried out in Spain ( N = 170) and Mexico ( N = 215), we tested whether high (vs. low) economic inequality leads to changes in the perceived agency and communion of both men and women. Our findings suggest that when economic inequality is high (vs. low), the communal content in social perceptions of both men and women decreases. Specifically, under high (vs. low) inequality, the difference in agency and communion ascribed to a man becomes greater (i.e., men are perceived as even more agentic than communal), whereas this difference becomes smaller for women (i.e., women are still perceived as more communal than agentic, but this difference is smaller). We discuss these findings’ implications regarding the psychosocial effects of economic inequality.

Abstract: MPOC; Disfunció muscular; Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19; 2019-nCoV EPOC; Disfunción muscular; Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19; 2019-nCoV COPD; Muscular dysfunction; Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19; 2019-nCoV Background There is limited information about the impact of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on the muscular dysfunction, despite the generalized weakness and fatigue that patients report after overcoming the acute phase of the infection. This study aimed to detect impaired muscle efficiency by evaluating delta efficiency (DE) in patients with COVID-19 compared with subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), and control group (CG). Methods A total of 60 participants were assigned to four experimental groups: COVID-19, COPD, IHD, and CG (n = 15 each group). Incremental exercise tests in a cycle ergometer were performed to obtain peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). DE was obtained from the end of the first workload to the power output where the respiratory exchange ratio was 1. Results A lower DE was detected in patients with COVID-19 and COPD compared with those in CG (P ≤ 0.033). However, no significant differences were observed among the experimental groups with diseases (P > 0.05). Lower VO2peak, peak ventilation, peak power output, and total exercise time were observed in the groups with diseases than in the CG (P < 0.05). A higher VO2, ventilation, and power output were detected in the CG compared with those in the groups with diseases at the first and second ventilatory threshold (P < 0.05). A higher power output was detected in the IHD group compared with those in the COVID-19 and COPD groups (P < 0.05) at the first and second ventilatory thresholds and when the respiratory exchange ratio was 1. A significant correlation (P < 0.001) was found between the VO2peak and DE and between the peak power output and DE (P < 0.001). Conclusions Patients with COVID-19 showed marked mechanical inefficiency similar to that observed in COPD and IHD patients. Patients with COVID-19 and COPD showed a significant decrease in power output compared to IHD during pedalling despite having similar response in VO2 at each intensity. Resistance training should be considered during the early phase of rehabilitation.

Whereas qualitative and ethnographic data suggest that many cultures conceptualize manhood as precarious, quantitative research has yet to demonstrate the cross-cultural consistency of precarious manhood beliefs. Here, we examined the psychometric isomorphism, or measurement invariance, of a brief precarious manhood beliefs scale (the PMB). Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N=33,417), we examined: (1) the isomorphism of the PMB across individual and country levels; (2) the PMB’s distinctness from, and associations with, other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies (e.g., ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; Glick & Fiske, 1996, 1999); and (3) associations of the PMB with country-level indices of gender equality (the GGGI; World Economic Forum, 2019) and human development (the HDI; United Nations Development Programme, 2019). Abstract: International audience; We present here a study based on the Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) and magnetic mineralogy carried out on the composite core MD17&18taken from the eastern levee of the active channel of the middle Bengal Fan in the Indian Ocean. Based on C-14 dating, the sedimentary sequence covers 9.8 ka in 39 m of sediment. It therefore records at very high resolution the variations in continental material exported to the ocean by the Ganges-Brahmaputra river system during the Holocene.This sequence was divided into two units according to turbidite activity: Unit 1 from 9.8 to 9.2 ka cal. BP representing 39 m of coarse-grained turbidite sequences (coarse silts to fine sands) and extremely high sedimentation rates. Unit 2 of 9.2 ka cal. BP to the present characterized by a sharp decrease in the sedimentation rate, the presence of fine-grained turbidites characterized by strong decrease in the ln(Ti/Ca) ratio.Our AMS results indicate that the magnetic fabric is highly sensitive to the mode of deposition. The turbidite sequences are clearly characterized by very high F and Pj values, not only of the coarse-grained turbidite levels in unit 1, but also of the fine turbidites in unit 2. We suggest that this strong degree of anisotropy is the result of the strong and rapid deposition during the turbidite sequences which induces an additional compaction effect.Furthermore, low temperature SIRM measurements revealed that the magnetic minerals representative of the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainage area are magnetite, hematite and goethite. A higher supply in fine-grained magnetite was observed during the turbidite sequences in phase with an increase in sediment grain size.

48. Excessive E2F transcription in single cancer cells precludes transient cell cycle exit after DNA damage

Abstract: E2F transcription factors control the expression of cell cycle genes. Cancers often demonstrate enhanced E2F target gene expression, which can be explained by increased percentages of replicating cells. However, we now demonstrate in human cancer biopsies that individual neoplastic cells display abnormally high levels of E2F-dependent transcription. To mimic this situation, we deleted the atypical E2F repressors (E2F7/8) in untransformed cells. Individual cells with elevated E2F-activity during S/G2-phase failed to exit the cell cycle after DNA damage and underwent mitosis. In contrast, wild type cells completed S-phase and then exit the cell cycle by activating the APC/CCdh1 via repression of the E2F-target Emi1. Strikingly, many arrested wildtype cells could eventually inactivate APC/CCdh1 to execute a second round of DNA replication and mitosis, thereby becoming tetraploid. Cells with elevated E2F-transcription fail to exit the cell cycle after DNA damage which potentially causes genomic instability, promotes malignant progression and reduces drug sensitivity.

49. “Acostarse con Aristóteles”. En torno al personaje de la pícara como mujer sexualizada

Abstract: El objetivo de este artículo es analizar los diferentes ámbitos de sexualización a la que se ven sometidas por sus autores las protagonistas de cuatro novelas picarescas del siglo XVII. Son personajes degradados que encarnan todos los vicios considerados femeninos y en los que la herencia materna determina su destino y su calado moral, agravado por un origen étnico no cristiano. Las pícaras se nos muestran como mujeres sexualizadas en todos sus ámbitos de actuación: realizan oficios relacionados directa o indirectamente con la esfera sexual, pero también, al transgredir todas las normas de comportamiento y circulación impuestas a las mujeres, van a identificarse con las prostitutas, en su acepción más amplia de mujeres que deambulan en los espacios públicos sin ningún recato. Las pícaras serán ventaneras, andariegas, aficionadas al baile o al cante y, sobre todo, sueltas de lengua. El carácter impúdico, que relaciona la sexualidad con su hábil manejo del lenguaje, queda reflejado en su condición de narradoras de sus propias historias, pero también en su caracterización como lectoras o escritoras.

Abstract: El angiosarcoma cardíaco es un tumor primario maligno infrecuente de origen mesenquimal con muy mal pronóstico, que tiende a infiltrar el corazón e invadir las estructuras circundantes. El diagnóstico inicial se realiza habitualmente con ecocardiografía transtorácica y transesofágica, que aportan mucha información como, por ejemplo, extensión, sitio de implantación, tamaño y parámetros hemodinámicos relacionados con la presencia de la masa. El estudio se puede complementar con otras técnicas como la resonancia magnética cardíaca y la tomografía computarizada cardíaca.
