4. Radaptation : adapting ancient Greek tragedy in the twenty-first century

Abstract

This practice-led PhD examines the relationship between ancient tragedy and the contemporary moment from the dual perspective of playwright and critical commentator. The creative submission comprises three new plays, My Boy, Electricity and Fed, 'radaptations' of Euripides' tragedies Medea, Electra and Hippolytus respectively. These are accompanied by a critical analysis of how new theatre writing employs and reconfigures theatrical conventions usually associated with ancient Greek tragedy. This analysis focuses upon adaptations of Medea produced between 1996 and 2015 in the UK and Ireland, and includes discussion of plays written by Mike Bartlett, Marina Carr, Rachel Cusk, Liz Lochhead and Simon Stephens. It examines how these contemporary plays rework ancient form to revision the tragedy of Medea, with particular focus on the issues raised by the conventions of chorus, mask and messenger speech. This analysis considers what these conventions signify in the twenty-first century and how playwrights have responded to the creative opportunities they offer. The thesis reflects upon my own critical and creative findings, drawing on research by James Barrett, Helen Eastman, Simon Goldhill, Edith Hall, Fiona Macintosh and David Wiles, among others, in order to present a consideration of the relationship between the classical world in which Greek tragedies were originally created, and the context in which contemporary playwrights are now working.

21. Novel approach to the analysis of spatially-varying treatment effects in on-farm experiments

Abstract

© 2020 With increasing interest in on-farm experiments, there is a pressing need to develop rigorous statistical methods for analysing these experiments. The adoption of advanced technologies such as yield monitors and variable-rate fertilizer applicators has enabled farmers and researchers to collect biophysical data linked to spatial information at a scale which allows them to investigate the role of spatial variability in the development of optimum management practices. A relevant topic for investigation could be: “what are the optimum rates of nitrogen and how/why do these differ across the field”? Although it has been recently understood that traditional statistical methods that are appropriate for analysing small-plot experiments are inappropriate for answering these questions, a unifying approach to inference for on-farm experiments is still missing and this limits the adoption of the technique. In this paper we propose a unifying approach to the analysis of on-farm strip experiments adapting the core ideas of local likelihood or geographically weighted regression. We propose a statistical model that allows spatial nonstationarity in modelled relationships and estimates spatially-varying parameters governing these relationships. A crucial step is bandwidth selection in implementing these models, and we develop bandwidth selection methods for two important scenarios relevant to the modelling of yield monitor data in on-farm experiments. Local t-scores have been introduced for inferential purposes and the associated problem of multiple testing has been described in the context of analysing on-farm experiments. We demonstrate in this paper how local p-values can be adjusted to overcome this problem. To illustrate the applicability of our proposed method, we analysed two publicly available datasets. Graphical displays are created to guide practitioners to make informed decisions on optimal management practices.

29. A simple and parsimonious generalised additive model for predicting wheat yield in a decision support tool

Abstract

Yield prediction is a major determinant of many management decisions for crop production. Farmers and their advisors want user-friendly decision support tools for predicting yield. Simulation models can be used to accurately predict yield, but they are complex and difficult to parameterise. The goal of this study is to build a simple and parsimonious model for predicting wheat yields that can be implemented in a decision tool to be used by farmers at a paddock level. A large yield data set accumulated from trials on commonly grown varieties in Western Australia is used to build and validate a generalised additive model (GAM) for predicting wheat yield. Explanatory variables tested included weather data and derivatives, geolocation, soil type, land capability, and wheat varieties. Model selection followed a forward stepwise approach in combination with cross-validation to select the smallest set of explanatory variables. The predictive performance is also evaluated using independent data. The final model uses seasonal water availability, location and year to predict wheat yield. Because the GAM model has minimal inputs, it can be easily employed in a decision tool to predict yield throughout the growing season using rainfall data up to the prediction date and either climatological averages or seasonal forecasts of rainfall for the remainder of the growing season. It also has the potential to be used as an input to agronomic models that predict the effect on yield of various management choices for fertiliser, pest, weed and disease management.

Abstract

[Truncated abstract] The field of pattern recognition aims to develop algorithms and computer programs that can learn patterns from data, where learning encompasses the problems of recognition, representation, classification and prediction. Syntactic pattern recognition recognises that patterns may be hierarchically structured. Formal language theory is an example of a syntactic approach, and is used extensively in computer languages and speech processing. However, the underlying structure of language and speech is strictly one-dimensional. The application of syntactic pattern recognition to the analysis of images requires an extension of formal language theory. Thus, this thesis extends and generalises formal language theory to apply to data that have possibly multi-dimensional underlying structure and also hierarchic structure . . . As in the case for curves, shapes are modelled as a sequence of local relationships between the curves, and these are estimated using a training sample. Syntactic square detection was extremely successful – detecting 100% of squares in images containing only a single square, and over 50% of the squares in images containing ten squares highly likely to be partially or severely occluded. The detection and classification of polygons was successful, despite a tendency for occluded squares and rectangles to be confused. The algorithm also peformed well on real images containing fish. Abstract

Doyle (1977, 1979), working on the Southern Canadian Interior Plain evaluated regional geochemical patterns based on parent material. He found that regional variation in the total concentration of copper, iron, manganese and zinc arose largely from differences among parent materials, rather than from more local (within parent material) differences caused by pedological factors. To extend Doyle's work, a more detailed local investigation of the within parent material variation of copper, iron, manganese and zinc on four parent materials was carried out in the Rosetown area, Saskatchewan. Principal objectives of this study were to find the causes and magnitude of downslope catenary changes in the geochemical pattern on each of four soil parent materials, utilizing DTPA extraction to indicate the availability of these micronutrients to crops. Soil samples were collected from soils developed on lacustrine clay (Regina Soil Series), lacustrine silt (Elstow Soil Series), glacial till (Weyburn Soil Series) and aeolian sand (Dune Sand Soil Series). Five sites were selected for each parent material and at each site, five pits were dug at intervals downslope. Laboratory analysis for the entire sample set included the determination of pH, organic matter, copper, iron, manganese and zinc concentrations for soil digested with 4:1 HNO₃/HClO₄ mixture and the same metals extracted with DTPA solution. Further analysis comprised sequential extraction of copper, iron, manganese and zinc, particle size separation and X-ray diffraction. Highest total elemental concentrations are found in the Ap horizon of the Rego Dark Brown Chernozems developed on lacustrine clay, followed by lacustrine silt and glacial till soils, with soils on aeolian sands having the lowest values. The A horizons of lacustrine silt soils contain the highest DTPA extractable concentrations of iron, manganese and zinc, whereas, maximum extractable concentrations in the C horizons are associated with lacustrine clays. DTPA extractable copper in both A and C horizons is at a maximum in lacustrine clay soils. For the majority of sites, the highest total and DTPA elemental concentrations occur at the base of the slope, this being most marked for lacustrine silt soils. Total elemental concentrations for the four parent materials exhibit a relatively greater uniformity when considering both trends downslope and down profile than DTPA concentrations. A much greater proportion of DTPA extractable manganese and zinc occurs in the organic rich surface horizons compared to the more alkaline C horizons. This is also found for copper and iron but to a lesser extent. Analysis of variance shows that the compositional variation among parent materials for total elemental data, accounts for well over 50% of the overall data variability. Duncan's New Multiple Range test results further substantiate these textural groupings into lacustrine clay, lacustrine silt and glacial till and aeolian sand. Results are less conclusive for DTPA elemental data. However, even though soil copper, iron, manganese and zinc are influenced by many pediological factors operating separately and jointly, a large percentage of the total variability when predicting DTPA elemental concentrations can be accounted for by the variables included in the regression equations. The Index of Determination (I ) shows that the variability in DTPA elemental concentrations is best accounted for by the regression equations for the lacustrine clay soils with 93-98% of the total variability explained.
