We present the data and initial results from a combined Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/IUE/ground-based spectroscopic monitoring campaign on the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 that was undertaken in order to address questions that require both higher temporal resolution and higher signal-to-noise ratios than were obtained in our previous multiwavelength monitoring of this galaxy in 1988-1989. IUE spectra were obtained once every 2 days for a period of 74 days beginning on 1993 March 14. During the last 39 days of this campaign, spectroscopic observations were also made with the HST Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) on a daily basis. Ground-based observations, consisting of 165 optical spectra and 77 photometric observations (both CCD imaging and aperture photometry), are reported for the period 1992 October-1993 September, although many of the data are concentrated around the time of the satellite-based program. These data constitute a fifth year of intensive optical monitoring of this galaxy. In this contribution we describe the acquisition and reduction of all of the satellite and ground-based data obtained in this program. We describe in detail various photometric problems with the FOS and explain how we identified and corrected for various anomalies.

We present the results of the first high angular resolution observations taken with a Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of a star cluster embedded in very bright background. The strong and complex background around the R136 cluster in the 30 Dor nebula does not prevent the FGS from achieving performance close to its angular resolution limit of approximately 0.015 sec per axis with reliable photometry. These FGS observations establish that the central object in R136a is a triple star with the third component delta V = 1.1 mag fainter than the primary star al approximately 0.08 sec way. We estimate from the grid of models of Maeder (1990) that the present mass of al is between 30 and 80 solar masses, with the main-sequence progenitor between 60 and 120 solar masses.

We describe in detail various photometric problems with the FOS and explain how we identified and corrected for various anomalies. During the HST portion of the monitoring campaign, the 1350 A continuum flux is found to have varied by nearly a factor of two. In other wavebands, the continuum shows nearly identical behavior, except that the amplitude of variability is larger at shorter wavelengths, and the continuum light curves appear to show more short time-scale variability at shorter wavelengths. The broad emission lines also vary in flux, with amplitudes that are slightly smaller than the UV continuum variations and with a small time delay relative to the UV continuum. On the basis of simple time-series analysis of the UV and optical continuum and emission line light curves, we find (1) that the ultraviolet and optical continuum variations are virtually simultaneous, with any lag between the 1350 A continuum and the 5100 A continuum amounting to less than about one day; (2) that the variations in the highest ionization lines observed, He II lambda 1640 and N V lambda 1240, lag behind the continuum variations by somewhat less than 2 days, and (3) that the velocity field of the C IV-emitting region is not dominated by radial motion. The results on the C IV velocity field are preliminary and quite uncertain, but there are some weak indications that the emission-line (wings absolute value of Delta upsilon is greater than or equal to 3000 km/s) respond to continuum variations slightly more rapidly than does the core. The optical observations show that the variations in the broad H beta line flux follow the continuum variations with a time lag of around two weeks, about twice the lag for Ly alpha and C IV, as in our previous monitoring campaign on this same galaxy. However, the lags measured for Ly alpha, C IV, and H Beta are each slightly smaller than previously determined. We confirm two trends reported earlier, namely (1) that the UV/optical continuum becomes 'harder' as it gets brighter, and (2) that the highest ionization emission lines have the shortest lags, thus indicating radial ionization stratificatin of a broad-line region that spans over an order of magnitude range in radius.

Several grids of theoretical H II region models are computed by photoionization modeling in order to determine the extent to which the choice of the ionizing stellar atmosphere model affects the calibration of emission-line diagnostic diagrams of Evans and Dopita (1985) and the semiempirical H II region abundance sequence calibration of Evans and Dopita. Emission-line diagnostic diagrams are presented and compared for model nebulae ionized by Hummer and Mihalas (1970) unblanketed LTE atmospheres, Kurucz (1979) line-blanketed LTE atmospheres, Mihalas (1972) unblanketed non-LTE, and a truncated blackbody spectrum. The models demonstrate that for solar nebular and atmospheric abundances, there are only minor differences between H II models ionized by the Hummer and Mihalas atmospheres. The unblanketed non-LTE stellar atmosphere models of Mihalas and truncated blackbody spectra are shown to be unsuitable for general H II region modelling.

The Planetary Camera aboard HST has been used to obtain a high spatial resolution forbidden O III 5007 A image of the nucleus of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1068. This image shows more detail than any previously published images and resolves the NLR into several distinct clouds arranged in an apparently conical geometry. The individual emission-line regions appear to be resolved with sizes of 0.1-0.2 arcsec. There is a strong apparent correspondence between the 1.3 cm radio structure and several of the forbidden O III 5007 A clouds, although there are also bright emission-line clouds for which there are no radio counterparts. In particular, the radio 'triple' of Ulvestad et al. (1987) appears to correspond directly to the forbidden O III 5007 A clouds A-D. It is concluded that the distribution of the clouds is consistent with ionization core models. The hidden nucleus is located somewhere in the southern radio component and may be coincident with the H2O megamaser.

The technique of maximum entropy image restoration is applied to the problem of deconvolving the point spread function from a deep, high-quality V band image of the optical jet of 3C 273. The resulting maximum entropy image has an approximate spatial resolution of 0.6 arcsec and has been used to study the morphology of the optical jet. Four regularly-spaced optical knots are clearly evident in the data, together with an optical 'extension' at each end of the optical jet. The jet oscillates around its center of gravity, and the spatial scale of the oscillations is very similar to the spacing between the optical knots. The jet is marginally resolved in the transverse direction and has an asymmetric profile perpendicular to the jet axis. The distribution of V band flux along the length of the jet, and accurate astrometry of the optical knot positions are presented.

New intermediate-resolution optical spectrophotometry of the nucleus of the southern Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 is presented. These data demonstrate that the nucleus was in a very luminous state in May, 1983 manifested through considerably enhanced broad-line and optical continuum emission compared to the quiescent state evident in the data of Evans (1988) obtained in March, 1984. The two data sets are compared to derive the relative strengths of the continuum and broad-line intensities, and profile ratios are constructed for the H-alpha and H-beta Balmer lines to detect differences in the line profiles between the two epochs.

High-resolution optical spectrophotometry is presented for the nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783. The data suggest that the broadest components of the forbidden lines have blueshifts relative to systemic velocity which are correlated primarily with ionization potential, and FWHMs which are correlated primarily with criticl density. Similar trends also exist in the line components responsible for the larger part of the line emission, but are not as strong as for the broadest line components. Comparison of the profiles of the Balmer lines indicates that the Balmer decrement measured from the H-beta/H-alpha ratio flattens in the line wings. However, the H-gamma and H-delta line profiles are more similar to the H-alpha line profile than to the H-beta line profile, suggesting that the H-beta profile may be anomalous.
