Optical photon propagation is an embarrassingly parallel operation, well suited to acceleration on GPU devices. Rendering of images employs similar techniques -- for this reason, a pipeline to offload optical photon propagation from Geant4 to the industry-standard open-source renderer Mitsuba3 has been devised. With the creation of a dedicated plugin for single point multi-source emission, we find a photon propagation rate of $2\times10^{5}$ photons per second per CPU thread using LLVM and $1.2\times10^{6}$ photons per second per GPU using CUDA. This represents a speed-up of 70 on CPU and 400 on GPU over Geant4 and is competitive with other similar applications. We present the investigation of the use of Opticks, a GPU-accelerated optical photon interface with the LHCb detector simulation, to improve computation time of optical photon propagation. The hybrid workflow, combining the particle simulation package Geant4 and Opticks, offloads optical photon propagation to GPUs, thereby accelerating the overall simulation process. The consistency of the results obtained from Geant4 and Opticks simulations is verified with a simplified LHCb RICH 1 detector geometry, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed approach. In addition, the ongoing transition to the NVIDIA OptiX 7 API and re-structuring of Opticks code is discussed within the context of HEP simulation workflows, with caveats explored.

We report the optical, electrical, and structural properties of Si doped $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ films grown on (010)-oriented $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ substrate via HVPE. Our results show that, despite growth rates that are more than one order of magnitude faster than MOCVD, films with mobility values of up to 95 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ at a carrier concentration of 1.3$\times$10$^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$ can be achieved using this technique, with all Si-doped samples showing n-type behavior with carrier concentrations in the range of 10$^{17}$ to 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$. All samples showed similar room temperature photoluminescence, with only the samples with the lowest carrier concentration showing the presence of a blue luminescence, and the Raman spectra exhibiting only phonon modes that belong to $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$, indicating that the Ga$_2$O$_3$ films are phase pure and of high crystal quality. We further evaluated the epitaxial quality of the films by carrying out grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements, which allowed us to discriminate the bulk and film contributions. Finally, MOS capacitors were fabricated using ALD HfO$_2$ to perform C-V measurements. The carrier concentration and dielectric values extracted from the C-V characteristics are in good agreement with Hall probe measurements. These results indicate that HVPE has a strong potential to yield device-quality $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ films that can be utilized to develop vertical devices for high-power electronics applications.

The role of NASA's Earth Science Data Systems Working Groups (ESDSWG) is to make recommendations relevant to NASA's Earth science data systems from users' experiences and community insight. Each group works independently, focusing on a unique topic. Progress of two of the 2017 Working Groups will be presented. In a single airborne field campaign, there can be several different instruments and techniques that measure the same parameter on one or more aircraft platforms. Many of these same parameters are measured during different airborne campaigns using similar or different instruments and techniques. The Airborne Composition Standard Variable Name Working Group is working to create a list of variable standard names that can be used across all airborne field campaigns in order to assist in the transition to the ICARTT Version 2.0 file format. The overall goal is to enhance the usability of ICARTT files and the search ability of airborne field campaign data. The Time Series Working Group (TSWG) is a continuation of the 2015 and 2016 Time Series Working Groups. In 2015, we started TSWG with the intention of exploring the new OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) WaterML 2 standards as a means for encoding point-based time series data from NASA satellites. In this working group, we realized that WaterML 2 might not be the best solution for this type of data, for a number of reasons. Our discussion with experts from other agencies, who have worked on similar issues, identified several challenges that we would need to address. As a result, we made the recommendation to study the new TimeseriesML 1.0 standard of OGC as a potential NASA time series standard. The 2016 TSWG examined closely the TimeseriesML 1.0 and, in coordination with the OGC TimeseriesML Standards Working Group, identified certain gaps in TimeseriesML 1.0 that would need to be addressed for the standard to be applicable to NASA time series data. An engineering report was drafted based on the OGC Engineering Report template, describing recommended changes to TimeseriesML 1.0, in the form of use cases. In 2017, we are conducting interoperability experiments to implement the use cases and demonstrate the feasibility and suitability of these modifications for NASA and related user communities. The results will be incorporated into the existing draft engineering report.
