1. Evolution of the Fermi surface of 1T-VSe$_2$ across a structural phase transition

Abstract

The electronic origin of the structural transition in 1T-VSe$_2$ is re-evaluated through an extensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiment. The components of the band structure, missing in previous reports, are revealed. Earlier observations, shown to be temperature independent and therefore not correlated with the phase transition, are explained in terms of the increased complexity of the band structure close to the Fermi level. Only the overall size of the Fermi surface is found to be positively correlated with the phase transition at 110 K. These observations, quite distant from the charge density wave scenario commonly considered for 1T-VSe$_2$, bring fresh perspectives toward the correct description of structural transitions in dichalcogenides materials., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Strain engineering of perovskite oxide thin films has proven to be an extremely powerful method for enhancing and inducing ferroelectric behavior. In ferroelectric thin films and superlattices, the polarization is intricately linked to crystal structure, but we show here that it can also play an important role in the growth process, influencing growth rates, relaxation mechanisms, electrical properties and domain structures. We have studied this effect in detail by focusing on the properties of BaTiO$_{3}$ thin films grown on very thin layers of PbTiO$_{3}$ using a combination of x-ray diffraction, piezoforce microscopy, electrical characterization and rapid in-situ x-ray diffraction reciprocal space maps during the growth using synchrotron radiation. Using a simple model we show that the changes in growth are driven by the energy cost for the top material to sustain the polarization imposed upon it by the underlying layer, and these effects may be expected to occur in other multilayer systems where polarization is present during growth. Our research motivates the concept of polarization engineering during the growth process as a new and complementary approach to strain engineering.

Abstract

Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) is widely used to grow epitaxial thin films of quantum materials such as complex oxides. Here, we use in-situ X-ray scattering to study homoepitaxy of SrTiO$_3$ by energetic (e-) and thermalized (th-) PLD. We find that e-PLD suppresses the lateral growth of two-dimensional islands, which suggests that energetic particles break up smaller islands. Fast interlayer transport occurs for both e-PLD and th-PLD, implying a process operating on sub-microsecond timescales that doesn't depend strongly on the kinetic energy of the incident particles., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Multiple polytypes of MoTe2with distinct structures and intriguing electronic properties can be accessed by various physical and chemical approaches. Here, we report electrochemical lithium (Li) intercalation into 1T′-MoTe2nanoflakes, leading to the discovery of two previously unreported lithiated phases. Distinguished by their structural differences from the pristine 1T′ phase, these distinct phases were characterized using in situpolarization Raman spectroscopy and in situsingle-crystal X-ray diffraction. The lithiated phases exhibit increasing resistivity with decreasing temperature, and their carrier densities are two to 4 orders of magnitude smaller than the metallic 1T′ phase, as probed through in situHall measurements. The discovery of these gapped phases in initially metallic 1T′-MoTe2underscores electrochemical intercalation as a potent tool for tuning the phase stability and electron density in two-dimensional (2D) materials.

Abstract

Ecological pressures and varied feeding behaviors in a multitude of organisms have necessitated the drive for adaptation. One such change is seen in the feeding appendages of stomatopods, a group of highly predatory marine crustaceans. Stomatopods include "spearers," who ambush and snare soft bodied prey, and "smashers," who bludgeon hard-shelled prey with a heavily mineralized club. The regional substructural complexity of the stomatopod dactyl club from the smashing predator Odontodactylus scyllarus represents a model system in the study of impact tolerant biominerals. The club consists of a highly mineralized impact region, a characteristic Bouligand architecture (common to arthropods), and a unique section of the club, the striated region, composed of highly aligned sheets of mineralized fibers. Detailed ultrastructural investigations of the striated region within O. scyllarus and a related species of spearing stomatopod, Lysiosquillina maculate show consistent organization of mineral and organic, but distinct differences in macro-scale architecture. Evidence is provided for the function and substructural exaptation of the striated region, which facilitated redeployment of a raptorial feeding appendage as a biological hammer. Abstract

A useful way to study a wide range of materials with ordered and disordered phases at high pressures is with the X-ray Pair Distribution Function (PDF) method. Typically one uses a Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC) to create the high pressure environment for the sample. High quality X-ray PDF data is best obtained by using high energy photons, preferably 50 KeV and higher. In a DAC, the small sample volumes and the close proximity of the gasket material to the sample motivates the use of focusing lenses to increase the flux density of photons on the sample, while simultaneously decreasing the flux density on the gasket. We investigate the use of kinoform lenses for this application of X-Ray PDF in a Diamond Anvil Cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Domains of remnant polarization can be written into ferroelectrics with nanoscale precision using scanning probe nanolithography techniques such as piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). Understanding the structural effects accompanying this process has been challenging due to the lack of appropriate structural characterization tools. Synchrotron X-ray nanodiffraction provides images of the domain structure written by PFM into an epitaxial Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin film and simultaneously, Published in Nano Letters, v11 n8, 2011. Abstract

Cyclic voltammetry of zinc plated from flowing alkaline zincate electrolyte with a bismuth additive showed a marked mass transport effect during metal layer deplating. This bismuth was added as Bi2O3 and had a saturated concentration of 26 ppm bismuth. Using a small, transparent window flow cell the mechanism was studied in situ using synchrotron X-rays. X-ray microdiffraction revealed that the metal-electrolyte interface was bismuth rich, and bismuth behaved in a manner similar to a surfactant. Transmission X-ray microscopy revealed that in the presence of bismuth additive, 5 µm raised features on the metal layer were preferentially dissolved during deplating. However, macro-morphology experiments demonstrated that at 26 ppm a detrimental bismuth buildup occurred over many cycles. By reducing additive concentration to 3 ppm a metal layer was planarized compared to a no-additive control, while avoiding the bismuth buildup. These findings suggested that 3 ppm bismuth could be used to planarize zinc metal layers such as those in flow-assisted zinc batteries. However, concentration will need to be well-controlled. X-ray microprobing is used to investigate buried elastic strain resulting from deep He+ implantantion in LiNbO3. The implantation regions are defined lithographically and strain fields mapped with spatial- and energy-resolved x-ray microdiffraction to characterize the resulting structures. Abstract

Synchrotron x-ray diffraction has been used to study the surface reconstruction of W(001) through its phase transition at around 230 K. We find that, although the superlattice peak intensity decreases a thousand fold over the range studied, the integrated intensity, and hence the structure factor, is nearly constant. This indicates that the surface undergoes an order-disorder transition with little change in the magnitude of the atomic displacements. The critical behavior is compared with predictions of the 2D XY and Ising models.

Abstract

The nature of a striking pattern of extended defects formed by very high dose implantation of helium in a complex oxide, for example, ferroelectric z-cut LiNbO3, is studied. After irradiation, a high concentration of defects is found to collect and create a network of thick prismatic planar defects, which have typical dimensions of ~1.5 μm and 200 nm parallel and perpendicular to the z axis, respectively. This defect network and its effect on the lattice were studied using a set of x-ray and electron microscopy probes of the lattice structure and spatial variation. Optical microscopy shows that there is strong temperature dependence for forming the network; the density of these extended defects reaches a maximum value for an annealing temperature of 250 °C but is fully eliminated by a temperature of 380 °C. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that these extended defects are probably localized twinning and dislocation pileups due to plastic deformation of the lattice to relieve He-implantation-induced stress. During this deformation, He accumulates at the twin boundaries. The study also shows that the He interstitials evolve into bubbles causing high stress and resulting in a formation of thick prismatic planar defects.
