Air pollution now affects 92 percent of the global population and is responsible for one out of nine deaths, nearly two thirds of which occur in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. Emerging work on the political ecology of air pollution examines how its noxious effects are unevenly distributed across social categories such as race and class. Geographers know much less about the social mechanisms through which air pollution and its risks and mitigation efforts are calculated, however. Situated within northern Thailand's haze crisis and its broader agrarian transitions, we employ ethnographic and geospatial methods to theorize air pollution as a boundary object. Throughout the region, uncertainty over the causes and constitution of air pollution and its flexible interpretation have driven the development of civil society sensor networks and the adoption of portable Air Quality Index monitors and hot spot locating apps. These increasingly widespread technologies not only democratize data but also play a growing role in shifting environmental narratives of seasonal air pollution. By homing in on the boundary work of air pollution, however, we argue that although new, more widely accessible modes of knowledge production can seemingly reduce uncertainty and shift environmental policy, they can also obscure the long-standing political-economic inequalities on which environmental problems are based. This article advances current debates at the nexus of political ecology and science and technology by demonstrating how particulate matter matters differently within and between social groups and the role of sociality in environmental change and the production of political space. Chiang Mai, Thailand, has long experienced seasonal air pollution episodes at the end of the dry season (February-April). While the severity and length of the episodes vary annually, popular narratives describe how the "haze crisis" is worsening. In this article, we address the role of the media in driving the growing awareness of seasonal air pollution in Chiang Mai. The article contributes to scholarship on the politics of the representation of environmental problems and the understanding of discourses and practices through which natural phenomena are historically produced and become known. It takes into account social relations of power by addressing local environmental politics and how they are framed by politicaleconomic interests. Based on the analysis of three Thai national newspapers over a 25-year period as well as extensive fieldwork and interviews in Chiang Mai Province, we chronicle the development of a collective concern about seasonal air pollution and its political-ecological drivers and consequences. Finally, we demonstrate how this shared perception of a worsening haze crisis is driven by ongoing debates surrounding the use of forests, agro-capitalism, and legitimate forms of political power. Artificial radionuclides including radiocesium (134 Cs and 137 Cs) and radiosilver (110mAg) were released into the environment following the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident in March 2011. These particle-bound substances deposited on soils of north-eastern Japan, located predominantly within a ∼3000 km2 radioactive fallout plume and drained by several coastal rivers to the Pacific Ocean. The current dataset (Evrard et al., 2021), which can be accessed at 10.1594/PANGAEA.928594, compiles gamma-emitting artificial radionuclide activities measured in 782 sediment samples collected from 27 to 71 locations across catchments draining ∼6450 km2 during 16 fieldwork campaigns. Global nuclear weapon testing and the Chernobyl accident have released large amounts of radionuclides into the environment. However, to date, the spatial patterns of these fallout sources remain poorly constrained. Fallout radionuclides (137Cs, 239Pu, 240Pu) were measured in soil samples (n = 160) collected at flat, undisturbed grasslands in Western Europe in the framework of a harmonised European soil survey. We show that both fallout sources left a specific radionuclide imprint in European soils. Accordingly, we used plutonium to quantify contributions of global versus Chernobyl fallout to 137Cs found in European soils. Spatial prediction models allowed for a first assessment of the global versus Chernobyl fallout pattern across national boundaries. Understanding the magnitude of these fallout sources is crucial not only to establish a baseline in case of future radionuclide fallout but also to define a baseline for geomorphological reconstructions of soil redistribution due to soil erosion processes. eDNA refers to DNA extracted from an environmental sample with the goal of identifying the occurrence of past or current biological communities in aquatic and terrestrial environments. However, there is currently a lack of knowledge regarding the soil memory effect and its potential impact on lake sediment eDNA records. To investigate this issue, two contrasted sites located in cultivated environments in France were studied. In the first site, soil samples were collected (n = 30) in plots for which the crop rotation history was documented since 1975. In the second site, samples were collected (n = 40) to compare the abundance of currently observed taxa versus detected taxa in cropland and other land uses. The results showed that the last cultivated crop was detected in 100% of the samples as the most abundant. In addition, weeds were the most abundant taxa identified in both sites. Overall, these results illustrate the potential of eDNA analyses for identifying the recent (< 10 years) land cover history of soils and outline the detection of different taxa in cultivated plots. The capacity of detection of plant species grown on soils delivering sediments to lacustrine systems is promising to improve our understanding of sediment transfer processes over short timescales. The Fukushima nuclear accident inMarch 2011 generated a 3000 km² plume of soils heavily contaminated with 137Cs. Decontamination was completed early in 2019. Typhoon Hagibis was the first extreme event that occurred in the region after decontamination. Its impact on sediment sources and sediment 137Cs contamination was investigated through the application of a sediment fingerprinting procedure using spectrocolorimetry and geochemical properties. Sediment deposits (n = 24) were collected in the Mano and Niida River catchments after the 2019 typhoons, and their signature was compared to that of potential sources (e.g., cropland, forests, and subsurface; n = 57). Results demonstrate the dominance of cropland as the main source of sediment (mean: 54%) followed by forests (41%) with much lower contributions of subsurface material (5%). Overall, 137Cs concentrations in sedimentwere on average 84%--93%lower than the levels recorded after the accident in 2011, which demonstrates the effectiveness of cropland decontamination. Long‐term records are needed to investigate the impact of extreme events in the current framework of global change. Sedimentary reconstruction with a high resolution remains difficult without conducting expensive, destructive and/or time‐consuming analyses. In this study, high resolution CT‐scan profiles (0·6 mm resolution) were used to investigate their potential for detecting flood deposits induced by heavy rainfall events. This method was applied to a sediment core dated with fallout radionuclides – covering a 120 year period – collected in a pond draining a small forested catchment (French Massif Central – Central France). Between 1960 and 2017, 28 layers were deposited. Seventy‐six percent of these deposits were correlated to the occurrence of heavy rainfall (>50 mm) recorded during one or two consecutive days. The remainder of the deposits detected with the Computer Tomography (CT) scanner (n = 5) were not correlated to weather events. They mainly occurred in response to landscape management operations (for example, afforestation works as a result of the major 1999 storm). This period was indeed characterized by an increase in the delivery of 137Cs‐enriched sediment, demonstrating a greater topsoil contribution to sediment during major forest management operations. The intensity of detrital layers has significantly decreased throughout time after a major land use change that took place in 1948 and land abandonment. The frequency of heavy rainfall and associated detrital deposits has nevertheless increased by 60% and 75%, respectively, between the years 1960 and 2017. Abstract An excessive supply of sediment is observed in numerous rivers across the world where it leads to deleterious impacts. Information on the sources delivering this material to waterbodies is required to design effective management measures, and sediment tracing or fingerprinting techniques are increasingly used to quantify the amount of sediment derived from different sources. However, the current methods used to identify the land use contributions to sediment have a limited discrimination power. Here, we investigated the potential of environmental DNA (eDNA) to provide more detailed information on the plant species found in sediment source areas as a next generation fingerprint. To this end, flood sediment deposits (n = 12) were collected in 2017 in two catchments impacted by the Fukushima radioactive fallout along differing river sections draining forests, cropland or a mix of both land uses. Conventional fingerprints (i.e. fallout radionuclides and organic matter properties) were also measured in these samples. The conventional fingerprint model results showed that most sediment samples contained a dominant proportion of subsoil material. Nevertheless, the eDNA information effectively discriminated the three above-mentioned groups of sediment, with the dominance of tree, shrub and fern species in sediment sampled in rivers draining forests versus a majority of grass, algae and cultivated plant species in sediment collected in rivers draining cropland. Based on these encouraging results, future research should examine the potential of eDNA in mixed land use catchments where the contribution of topsoil to sediment dominates and where the cultivation of land has not been abandoned in order to better characterize the memory effect of eDNA in soils and sediment. Radiocarbon and radiocesium were measured on litter fractions (LF) collected on November 19th, 2011 at 40 km NW of the FDNPP. The 137Cs concentration is much higher in the lower fraction LFb at 226,650 ± 170 Bq kg−1 than in the upper fraction LFa at 7290 ± 40 Bq kg−1. From leaf-air 14C comparison, no excess 14C due to the FDNPP accident is detected in LFa deposited in 2010-2011. A significant 14C difference of 1.4% exists between pine needles and deciduous leaves in LFb, which may be due either to post-depositional processes or to a turnover time of 0.5-1 year of stored carbon for deciduous leaves growth. Tracing sediments back to their catchment sources using biogeochemical and physical fingerprints involves multiple assumptions. One of the most fundamental assumptions is that these fingerprints are consistent during sediment generation, transportation, and deposition processes. Accordingly, the biogeochemical fingerprints used to trace sediment must remain constant, during detachment and redistribution, or they must vary in a predictable and measurable way. One key challenge to this assumption is the sorting effect of particles by size during detachment, mobilization, transportation and deposition processes. Owing to the notable effect of particle size on sediment fingerprints, we believe it is important to review the main approaches used to address the effects of changes in particle size composition on sediment fingerprints. The two main approaches to addressing particle size impacts on fingerprint properties are: fractionation of source and sediment material to a narrow particle size range (e.g. isolation of < 10 μm or < 63 μm fractions), and concentration corrections (e.g. normalizing concentrations by parameters such as specific surface area). These approaches are often used in combination. The utility of fractionation and corrections to address particle size effects has received increasing attention and the relative merits of these procedures have been subject to debate. Accordingly, alternative techniques to address particle size effects in sediment fingerprinting studies are being adopted. For example, a tributary tracing technique or edge-of-field samplers may minimize particle size effects on sediment source fingerprints. The interrelationships between particle size and biogeochemical tracer properties suggest that particle size may also contribute to the formation of contrasts in sediment fingerprints between sources. Indeed, there may be a significant opportunity to derive further sediment source information through comprehensively investigating and unravelling the complexity of particle size–biogeochemical interactions. Soil erosion is recognized as one of the main processes of land degradation in agricultural areas. High suspended sediment loads, often generated from eroding agricultural landscapes, are known to degrade downstream environments. Accordingly, there is a need to identify suspended sediment sources and to investigate their dynamics. Here, soil and sediment strontium isotopic ratios were used to examine suspended sediment sources and dynamics in a lowland drained catchment in France. Suspended sediment ( n = 14) was collected in stream and at tile drain ( n = 4) outlets during three flood events between December 2013 and February 2014. Potential source soils ( n = 28) representative of the carbonate and silicate substrates found in the catchment were sampled and analyzed. Strontium isotopic ratios ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) were measured in different particle size fractions (< 2 μm, < 63 μm and < 2 mm). Soil 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios significantly discriminated between source samples classified as carbonate (0.712625 to 0.717815) and silicate (0.719287 to 0.724631) soils. 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios measured in suspended sediment (0.713660 to 0.720571) reflect variations in source contributions during different hydrological conditions. The 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios varied in the different fractions of soil samples (i.e. < 2 μm, < 63 μm and < 2 mm) and in suspended sediment samples. Suspended sediment was interpreted as a mixture of two end-members, with the dominant contribution of the < 2 μm fraction of soil samples occurring during small scale flood events and the < 2 mm fraction during more intense flood events. Modelling results indicate that carbonate source soil contributions are variable, with their highest contributions occurring during the two first flood events compared to the last flood event. The results also show that the tile drainage system enhances the connectivity between cultivated hillslopes and the river network, providing a preferential pathway for fine (< 2 μm) particles. This study demonstrates the potential of using strontium isotopic ratios to examine the variations of suspended sediment sources in drained catchments with contrasting carbonate and silicate sources. More importantly, the results highlight the need to improve the management of sediment exported from tile drains in similar agricultural environments, as they were demonstrated to transfer very fine material to the riverine environment. Soil erosion often supplies high sediment loads to rivers, degrading water quality and contributing to the siltation of reservoirs and lowland river channels. These impacts are exacerbated in agricultural catchments where modifications in land management and agricultural practices were shown to accelerate sediment supply. In this study, sediment sources were identified with a novel tracing approach combining cesium ( 137 Cs) and strontium isotopes ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) in the Louroux pond, at the outlet of a lowland cultivated catchment (24 km 2 , Loire River basin, France) representative of drained agricultural areas of Northwestern Europe. Surface soil (n = 36) and subsurface channel bank (n = 17) samples were collected to characterize potential sources. Deposited sediment (n = 41) was sampled across the entire surface of the pond to examine spatial variation in sediment deposits. In addition, a 1.10 m sediment core was sampled in the middle of the pond to reconstruct source variations throughout time. 137 Cs was used to discriminate between surface and subsurface sources, whereas 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios discriminated between lithological sources. A distribution modeling approach quantified the relative contribution of these sources to the sampled sediment. Results indicate that surface sources contributed to the majority of pond (μ 82%, σ 1%) and core (μ 88%, σ 2%) sediment with elevated subsurface contributions modeled near specific sites close to the banks of the Louroux pond. Contributions of the lithological sources were well mixed in surface sediment across the pond (i.e., carbonate sediment contribution, μ 48%, σ 1% and non-carbonate sediment contribution, μ 52%, σ 3%) although there were significant variations of these source contributions modeled for the sediment core between 1955 and 2013. These fluctuations reflect both the progressive implementation of land consolidation schemes in the catchment and the eutrophication of the pond. This original sediment fingerprinting study demonstrates the potential of combining radionuclide and strontium isotopic geochemistry measurements to quantify sediment sources in cultivated catchments. The devastating tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 inundated the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) resulting in a loss of cooling and a series of explosions releasing the largest quantity of radioactive material into the atmosphere since the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Although 80% of the radionuclides from this accidental release were transported over the Pacific Ocean, 20% were deposited over Japanese coastal catchments that are subject to frequent typhoons. Among the radioisotopes released during the FDNPP accident, radiocesium ( 134 Cs and 137 Cs) is considered the most serious current and future health risk for the local population. The goal of this review is to synthesize research relevant to the transfer of FDNPP derived radiocesium from hillslopes to the Pacific Ocean. After radiocesium fallout deposition on vegetation and soils, the contamination may remain stored in forest canopies, in vegetative litter on the ground, or in the soil. Once radiocesium contacts soil, it is quickly and almost irreversibly bound to fine soil particles. The kinetic energy of raindrops instigates the displacement of soil particles, and their bound radiocesium, which may be mobilized and transported with overland flow. Soil erosion is one of the main processes transferring particle-bound radiocesium from hillslopes through rivers and streams, and ultimately to the Pacific Ocean. Accordingly this review will summarize results regarding the fundamental processes and dynamics that govern radiocesium transfer from hillslopes to the Pacific Ocean published in the literature within the first four years after the FDNPP accident. The majority of radiocesium is reported to be transported in the particulate fraction, attached to fine particles. The contribution of the dissolved fraction to radiocesium migration is only relevant in base flows and is hypothesized to decline over time. Owing to the hydro-meteorological context of the Fukushima region, the most significant transfer of particulate-bound radiocesium occurs during major rainfall and runoff events (e.g. typhoons and spring snowmelt). There may be radiocesium storage within catchments in forests, floodplains and even within hillslopes that may be remobilized and contaminate downstream areas, even areas that did not receive fallout or may have been decontaminated. Overall this review demonstrates that characterizing the different mechanisms and factors driving radiocesium transfer is important. In particular, the review determined that quantifying the remaining catchment radiocesium inventory allows for a relative comparison of radiocesium transfer research from hillslope to catchment scales. Further, owing to the variety of mechanisms and factors, a transdisciplinary approach is required involving geomorphologists, hydrologists, soil and forestry scientists, and mathematical modellers to comprehensively quantify radiocesium transfers and dynamics. Characterizing radiocesium transfers from hillslopes to the Pacific Ocean is necessary for ongoing decontamination and management interventions with the objective of reducing the gamma radiation exposure to the local population. Large quantities of radiocesium were deposited across a 3000 km 2 area northwest of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant after the March 2011 accident. Although many studies have investigated the fate of 137 Cs in soil in the months following the accident, the depth distribution of this radioactive contaminant in rice paddy fields requires further examination after the typhoons that occurred in this region. Such investigations will help minimize potential human exposure in rice paddy fields. Radionuclide activity concentrations, organic content and particle size were analysed in 10 soil cores sampled from paddy fields in November 2013, 20 km north of the Fukushima power plant. Our results demonstrate limited depth migration of 137 Cs with the majority concentrated in the uppermost layers of soils (<5 cm). More than 30 months after the accident, between 46.8 and 98.7% of the total 137 Cs inventories was found within the top 5 cm of the soil surface, despite cumulative rainfall totalling 3300 mm. Furthermore, there were no significant correlations between 137 Cs depth distribution and the other parameters. We attributed the maximum depth penetration of 137 Cs to grass cutting (73.6–98.5% of 137 Cs in the upper 5 cm) and farming operations (tillage – 46.8–51.6% of 137 Cs in the upper 5 cm). As this area is exposed to erosive events, ongoing decontamination works may increase soil erodibility. We therefore recommend the rapid removal of the uppermost – contaminated – layer of the soil after removing the vegetation to avoid erosion of contaminated material during the subsequent rainfall events. Summary Soil erosion is intense in mountainous tropical regions where heavy storms result in the supply of large quantities of sediment to rivers. The origin and dynamics of suspended sediment were analysed in a catchment located in northern Laos during the first erosive flood of the rainy season in May 2012. The catchment was equipped with 4 successive gauging stations (draining areas ranging 0.2–11.6 km 2 ). Fallout radionuclides (Beryllium-7 – 7 Be, unsupported Pb-210 – 210 Pb xs , and Cesium-137 – 137 Cs) were determined on rainfall, overland flow, stream water, suspended sediment, soil surface and subsurface samples (with n = 3, 19, 75, 75, 65 and 14 respectively). Assumptions underpinning the 7 Be-labelling method were validated by implementing experiments in the laboratory (i.e., rainwater 7 Be sorption to soil particles) and in the field (i.e., 7 Be: 210 Pb xs activity ratio evolution in rainwater and related overland flow during a natural storm event). Radionuclide analyses provided a way to quantify variations in sediment dynamics and origin throughout the flood: (1) a proportion of recently eroded sediment (labelled by 7 Be, and referred to as “fresh sediment”) ranging between ca. 8–35% in suspended loads; (2) higher contributions of fresh sediment at the beginning of the flood rising stage; (3) a progressive dilution of fresh sediment by particles remobilised from the riverbed/channel; (4) the dominance of particles originating from the soil surface ( ca. 70–80% of total sediment load) in upper parts and a much larger contribution of subsurface material ( ca. 64%) at the downstream station. The original contribution of 7 Be-labelled particles derived from collapsed riverbanks to sediment export was also demonstrated. This pilot study supports the use of fallout 7 Be and 210 Pb xs in tropical catchments to constrain sediment dynamics. The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident led to important releases of radionuclides into the environment, and trace levels of plutonium (Pu) were detected in northeastern Japan. However, measurements of Pu isotopic atom and activity ratios are required to differentiate between the contributions of global nuclear test fallout and FDNPP emissions. In this study, we used a double-focusing sector field ICP-MS to measure Pu atom and activity ratios in recently deposited sediment along rivers draining the most contaminated part of the inland radioactive plume. Results showed that plutonium isotopes (i.e., 239Pu, 240Pu, 241Pu, and 242Pu) were detected in all samples, although in extremely low concentrations. The 241Pu/239Pu atom ratios measured in sediment deposits (0.0017-0.0884) were significantly higher than the corresponding values attributed to the global fallout (0.00113 ± 0.00008 on average for the Northern Hemisphere between 31°-71° N: Kelley, J. M.; Bond, L. A; Beasley, T. M. Global distribution of Pu isotopes and 237Np. Sci. Total. Env. 1999, 237/238, 483-500). The results indicated the presence of Pu from FDNPP, in slight excess compared to the Pu background from global fallout that represented up to ca. 60% of Pu in the analyzed samples. These results demonstrate that this radionuclide has been transported relatively long distances (∼45 km) from FDNPP and been deposited in rivers representing a potential source of Pu to the ocean. In future, the high 241Pu/239Pu atom ratio of the Fukushima accident sourced-Pu should be measured to quantify the supply of continental-originating material from Fukushima Prefecture to the Pacific Ocean. Summer typhoons and spring snowmelt led to the riverine spread of continental Fukushima fallout to the coastal plains of Northeastern Japan and the Pacific Ocean. Four fieldwork campaigns based on measurement of radioactive dose rates in fine riverine sediment that has recently deposited on channel bed-sand were conducted between November 2011 and May 2013 to document the spread of fallout by rivers. After a progressive decrease in the fresh riverine sediment doses rates between 2011 and early spring in 2013, a fifth campaign conducted in November 2013 showed that they started to increase again after the occurrence of violent typhoons. We show that this increase in dose rates was mostly due to remobilization of contaminated material that was temporarily stored in river channels or, more importantly, in dam reservoirs of the region during the typhoons. In addition, supply of particles from freshly eroded soils in autumn 2013 was the most important in areas where decontamination works are under progress. Our results underline the need to monitor the impact of decontamination works and dam releases in the region, as they may provide a continuous source of radioactive contamination to the coastal plains and the Pacific Ocean during the coming years. Abstract: Silver-110 metastable (110mAg) has been far less investigated than other anthropogenic radionuclides, although it has the potential to accumulate in plants and animal tissues. It is continuously produced by nuclear power plants in normal conditions, but emitted in much larger quantities in accidental conditions facilitating its detection, which allows the investigation of its behaviour in the environment. We analysed 110mAg in soil and river drape sediment (i.e., mud drapes deposited on channel-bed sand) collected within coastal catchments contaminated in Fukushima Prefecture (Japan) after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident that occurred on 11 March 2011. Several field experiments were conducted to document radiosilver behaviour in the terrestrial environment, with a systematic comparison to the more documented radiocesium behaviour. Results show a similar and low mobility for both elements in soils and a strong affinity with the clay fraction. Measurements conducted on sediment sequences accumulated in reservoirs tend to confirm a comparable deposition of those radionuclides even after their redistribution due to erosion and deposition processes. Therefore, as the 110mAg:137Cs initial activity ratio varied in soils across the area, we justified the relevance of using this tool to track the dispersion of contaminated sediment from the main inland radioactive pollution plume generated by FDNPP accident. Accumulation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils and their subsequent release in rivers constitute a major environmental and public health problem in industrialized countries. In the Seine River basin (France), some PAHs exceed the target concentrations, and the objectives of good chemical status required by the European Water Framework Directive might not be achieved. This investigation was conducted in an upstream subcatchment where atmospheric fallout (n=42), soil (n=33), river water (n=26) and sediment (n=101) samples were collected during one entire hydrological year. PAH concentrations in atmospheric fallout appeared to vary seasonally and to depend on the distance to urban areas. They varied between 60ng·L−1 (in a remote site during autumn) and 2380ng·L−1 (in a built-up area during winter). PAH stocks in soils of the catchment were estimated based on land use, as mean PAH concentrations varied between 110ng·g−1 under woodland and 2120ng·g−1 in built-up areas. They ranged from 12 to 220kg·km−2. PAH contamination in the aqueous phase of rivers remained homogeneous across the catchment (72±38ng·L−1). In contrast, contamination of suspended solid was heterogeneous depending on hydrological conditions and population density in the drainage area. Moreover, PAH concentrations appeared to be higher in sediment (230–9210ng·g−1) than in the nearby soils. Annual mass balance calculation conducted at the catchment scale showed that current PAH losses were mainly due to dissipation (biodegradation, photo-oxidation and volatilization) within the catchments (about 80%) whereas exports due to soil erosion and riverine transport appeared to be of minor importance. Based on the calculated fluxes, PAHs appeared to have long decontamination times in soils (40 to 1850years) thereby compromising the achievement of legislative targets. Soil erosion rates in cultivated areas have intensified during the last decades leading to both on and off-site problems for farmers and rural communities. Furthermore, soil redistribution processes play an important role in sediment and carbon storage within, and exports from, cultivated catchments. This study focuses on the impact of land consolidation and changes in landscape structure on medium term soil erosion and landscape morphology within a 3.7-ha field in France. The area was consolidated in 1967 and we used the 137Cs-technique to quantify soil erosion for the period (1954–2009). We measured the 137Cs inventories of 68 soil cores sampled along transects covering the entire area and especially specific linear landforms located along both present and past field borders (i.e., lynchets and undulations landforms, respectively). These results were then confronted with the outputs of a spatially-distributed 137Cs conversion model that simulates and discriminates soil redistribution induced by water and tillage erosion processes. Our results showed that tillage processes dominated the soil redistribution in our study area for the last 55years and generated about 95% (i.e., 4.50Mg·ha−1·yr−1) of the total gross erosion in the field. Furthermore, we demonstrated that soil redistribution was largely affected by the presence of current and also former field borders, where hotspots areas of erosion and deposition (>20Mg·ha−1·yr−1) were concentrated. Land consolidation contributed to the acceleration of soil erosion through the conversion of depositional areas into sediment generating areas. Although the conversion model was able to reproduce the general tendencies observed in the patterns of 137Cs inventories, the model performance was relatively poor with a r2 of 0.20. Discrepancies were identified and associated with sampling points located along the current field borders. Our data suggests that tillage erosion processes near field boundaries cannot be described as a typical diffusive process. These processes near field boundaries should be characterised and taken into account in a future version of the model to accurately simulate rates and patterns of past soil redistribution in fragmented cultivated hillslopes. We also showed that the use of an accurate DEM resulting from LIDAR data, based on present-day topography, leads to the underestimation of soil redistribution rates by the model, especially in this landscape submitted to recent and important morphological changes. Our results have important implications for the simulation of tillage erosion processes and our understanding of soil redistribution processes in complex cultivated areas. This is of particular interest to improve our knowledge and prediction of patterns of soil physical parameters, such as carbon storage or water content, particularly sensitive to surface erosion and landscape structuration. Measurement of radioactive dose rates in fine sediment that has recently deposited on channel bed-sand provides a solution to address the lack of continuous river monitoring in Fukushima Prefecture after Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) accident. We show that coastal rivers of Eastern Fukushima Prefecture were rapidly supplied with sediment contaminated by radionuclides originating from inland mountain ranges, and that this contaminated material was partly exported by typhoons to the coastal plains as soon as by November 2011. This export was amplified during snowmelt and typhoons in 2012. In 2013, contamination levels measured in sediment found in the upper parts of the catchments were almost systematically lower than the ones measured in nearby soils, whereas their contamination was higher in the coastal plains. We thereby suggest that storage of contaminated sediment in reservoirs and in coastal sections of the river channels now represents the most crucial issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High mountain environments are among the most fragile on Earth. Due to anthropogenic disturbances and the exposure to extreme weather events, the rates of soil erosion have recently been accelerating, resulting in ecological degradation and geological hazards. Ecological restoration of mountains and an improved understanding of nature-based solutions to mitigate land degradation is therefore of utmost urgency. Identifying hotspots of soil erosion is a first step towards improving mitigation strategies. A promising methodology to identify erosion hotspots is sediment source fingerprinting, that differentiates the properties of soil from different sources, using signatures such as elemental geochemistry or radionuclides. However, in areas with complex lithologies or shallow and poorly developed soils, geochemical fingerprints allow only a rough distinction between erosion hotspots. In this opinion paper, we explore the relevance of environmental DNA (eDNA) that originates from plant litter and fixes onto fine soil particles, as a targeted sediment fingerprinting method sensitive to vegetation that could potentially allow the identification of erosion hotspots and their relative importance from sedimentary deposits. Pioneering studies indicate that eDNA allows not only the detection of specific vegetation communities, but also the identification of individual plant species. Supported by the increasing availability and quality of vegetation maps and eDNA reference libraries, we argue that sediment source fingerprinting using eDNA from plant litter, will evolve into a valuable method to identify hotspots of soil erosion and allow stakeholders to prioritize areas where ecological restoration is necessary in high mountain environments. Abstract: Radioactive fallout due to the Fukushima reactor explosion in Japan was detected in environmental samples collected in France. The presence of 131I in aerosols (200±6μBqm−3) collected at the Pic du Midi observatory, located at 2877m altitude in the French Pyrénées, indicated that the Japanese radioactive cloud reached France between 22 and 29 March, i.e. less than two weeks after the initial emissions, as suggested by a 137Cs/134Cs ratio of 1.4. Cesium radioisotopes (134Cs and 137Cs) were not detected in this sample but they were present in the aerosol sample collected the next week, i.e. between 29 March and 05 April (about 10μBqm−3). We also report 131I activities measured in grass (1.1–11Bqkg−1; fresh weight) and soil samples (0.4Bqkg−1) collected in the Seine River basin between 30 March and 10 April. The 134Cs from the damaged Fukushima power plant was also detected in grass collected in the Seine River basin between 31 March and 10 April (0.2–1.6Bqkg−1 fresh weight, with a 137Cs/134Cs ratio close to 1, which is consistent with Fukushima radioactive release). Despite the installation of a network of nested stations to collect suspended matter in the upstream part of the Seine River basin, 131I was only detected in suspended matter (4.5–60Bqkg−1) collected at the most upstream stations between 30 March and 12 April. Neither 131I nor 134Cs has been detected in environmental samples since the end of April 2011, because of the rapid decay of 131I and the very low activities of 134Cs (about 400 times lower than after Chernobyl accident). Abstract: Tropical regions are affected by intense soil erosion associated with deforestation, overgrazing, and cropping intensification. This land degradation leads to important on-site (e.g., decrease in soil fertility) and off-site (e.g., reservoir siltation and water pollution) impacts. This study determined the mean soil particle and sediment residence times in soils and rivers of three subcatchments (3–12km2) with contrasted land uses (i.e., cropland, forests, and rangelands) draining to a reservoir located in highlands of the transvolcanic Mexican belt. Calculations were based on rainfall amount and river discharges as well as on fallout radionuclide measurements (Be-7, Cs-137, and Pb-210) conducted on rainfall precipitated samples, soil sampled in the catchments, and suspended sediment collected by automatic samplers in the river during most storms recorded throughout the 2009 rainy season. Calculations using a radionuclide two-box balance model showed that the mean residence time of particles in soils ranged between 5000±1500 and 23,300±7000years. In contrast, sediment residence time in rivers was much shorter, fluctuating between 50±30 and 200±70days. The shortest mean residence times were measured in a hilly catchment dominated by cropland and rangelands, whereas they were the longest in an undulating catchment dominated by forests and cropland. Calculation of the Be-7/excess-Pb-210 in both rainfall and sediment allowed gaining insight on sediment dynamics throughout the rainy season. The first heavy storms of the year exported the bulk of the sediment stock accumulated in the river channel during the previous year. Then, during the rainy season, the two steeper catchments dominated by cropland and rangelands reacted strongly to rainfall. Sediment was indeed eroded and exported from both catchments during single heavy storms on several occasions in 2009. In contrast, the agro-forested catchment with gentler slopes exported sediment at a constant and low rate throughout the rainy season. Overall, land cover and flood type clearly proved to exert more control on sediment export than slope steepness and rainfall erosivity. Our results show the priority of stabilising old gully systems to prevent their extension by regressive erosion to cropland and to concentrate the implementation of on-site erosion control measures in cropland and rangeland of the most reactive catchments. Abstract: Soil erosion leads to important environmental problems (e.g. muddy floods, reservoir sedimentation) in cultivated areas of the European loess belt. This study aimed to determine the impact of rainfall seasonality and land use change on soil erosion over the last 40 years in a 94-ha cultivated catchment of Normandy (France). To this end, scenarios representative of the different land use conditions were simulated using the STREAM expert-based erosion model. A 13 years long sequence of rainfall events was run with this model. Results showed that erosion increased dramatically after land consolidation (+168% on average). Interannual variability of erosion is important. After land consolidation, 79% of erosion was observed in summer and autumn, even though these seasons only accounted for 58% of annual rainfall kinetic energy. The bulk of erosion was hence produced by a few intense thunderstorms during this period. Thunderstorms correspond to 5% of rainfall events and to 15% of the total rainfall depth, but they generate 51% of total annual erosion after land consolidation (and up to 57% of erosion before land consolidation). Confrontation of the STREAM model outputs with the erosion rates modelled based on Cs-137 measurements suggested that soil redistribution within the catchment was very high but that sediment exports from the catchment remained limited (sediment delivery ratio between 1% and 10%). Local erosion rates derived from Cs-137 measurements showed an important and organised spatial variability, but erosion rates integrated over larger areas remained in the same order of magnitude as those simulated by the STREAM model or were slightly higher. Water erosion would hence not be the only process generating erosion within this catchment. The development of domestic (or national) tourism in Thailand in the second half of the 20th century relied on a new kind of relationship between the state and local cultures. Rural spaces have been reinvented and transformed into appealing visual and conceptual archetypes which sustain discourses on both local and national identity and history. Thai tourism allows a kind of pacification of the relations between the centre and the periphery, but it also perpetuates an internal colonialism, both towards Tai and non-Tai populations. This article investigates the social significance of domestic tourism in Chiang Mai and the links between non-Western representation of travel, nationalism and localized identity. It focuses on three attractions scattered along the road going up to the mountain of Suthep (Doi Suthep), one of the most famous tourist destinations in northern Thailand: a Buddhist temple, a royal palace and an ethnic village. These three attractions provide crucial insights into the history of domestic tourism in Thailand: its similarities to and differences from previous forms of travel, its relations to the idealization of the rural and its role in the pacification of the relations between the Thai state and its geographic and social margins. Abstract: During the last decades, the European loess belt has been confronted with a significant increase in environmental problems due to erosion on agricultural land. Spatially distributed runoff and erosion models operating at the catchment scale are therefore needed to evaluate the impact of potential mitigation measures. Expert-based models offer an alternative solution to process-based and empirical models, but their decision rules are only valid for the local conditions for which they have been derived. The STREAM model, which was developed in Normandy (France), has been applied in two Belgian catchments having a similar soil texture, as well as in a catchment of southern France differing by soil, land use and climate characteristics. The performance of hydrological models can be assessed for instance by calculating the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency criterion (E NS). When applied to Belgium, the model results are satisfactory to good after an adaptation of the decision rules (0.90< E NS <0.93 for runoff predictions and 0.85< E NS <0.89 for erosion predictions). Given the important environmental differences between Normandy and southern France, the model rules were also adapted for application in the latter environment. Unfortunately, the quality of runoff predictions was insufficient to simulate erosion in southern France. In conclusion, STREAM is a reliable model providing satisfactory runoff and erosion predictions in the regions where hortonian overland flow dominates. Nevertheless, an adaptation of decision rules based on local multi-scale (plot, field, catchment) data is needed, before running the model. Abstract: Muddy floods, i.e. runoff from cultivated areas carrying large quantities of soil, are frequent and widespread in the European loess belt. They are mainly generated in dry zero-order valleys and are nowadays considered as the most likely process transferring material eroded from cultivated hillslopes during the Holocene to the flood plain. The huge costs of muddy flood damages justify the urgent installation of control measures. In the framework of the ‘Soil Erosion Decree’ of the Belgian Flemish region, a 12 ha-grassed waterway and three earthen dams have been installed between 2002–2004 in the thalweg of a 300-ha cultivated dry valley in the Belgian loess belt. The measures served their purpose by preventing any muddy flood in the downstream village, despite the occurrence of several extreme rainfall events (with a maximum return period of 150 years). The catchment has been intensively monitored from 2005–2007 and 39 runoff events were recorded in that period. Peak discharge (per ha) was reduced by 69% between the upstream and the downstream extremities of the grassed waterway (GWW). Furthermore, runoff was buffered for 5–12 h behind the dams, and the lag time at the outlet of the catchment was thereby increased by 75%. Reinfiltration was also observed within the waterway, runoff coefficients decreasing by a mean of 50% between both extremities of the GWW. Sediment discharge was also reduced by 93% between the GWW''s inflow and the outlet. Before the installation of the control measures, specific sediment yield (SSY) of the catchment reached 3.5 t ha−1 yr−1 and an ephemeral gully was observed nearly each year in the catchment. Since the control measures have been installed, no (ephemeral) gully has developed and the SSY of the catchment dropped to a mean of 0.5 t ha−1 yr−1. Hence, sediment transfer from the cultivated dry valley to the alluvial plain should dramatically decrease. Total cost of the control measures that are built for a 20 year-period is very low (126 € ha−1) compared to the mean damage cost associated with muddy floods in the study area (54 € ha−1 yr−1). Abstract: Numerous villages in the European loess belt are confronted with floods caused by runoff from agricultural land. Seventy-nine percent of the municipalities in central Belgium experienced at least one muddy flood during the last decade. Of these flooded municipalities, 22% have been affected more than 10 times during this period. Twenty municipalities have been selected for a detailed analysis. A database of 367 locations affected by muddy floods has been compiled, and the connectivity between cultivated areas and inhabited zones could be assessed for 100 flooded locations. Roads and drainage network facilitate runoff transfer between cultivated and inhabited areas in 64% of cases. Three types of areas producing muddy floods have been identified: hillslopes (1–30 ha) without thalweg where runoff is generally dominated by sheet flow; small catchments (10–300 ha) characterised by runoff concentration in the thalweg and medium catchments (100–300 ha) with multiple thalwegs dominated by concentrated runoff. About 90% of muddy floods are generated on hillslopes and in small catchments. A critical area–slope threshold for triggering muddy floods has been computed for hillslopes. A logistic regression shows that muddy floods are generated in small and medium catchments with 99% probability after 43 mm rainfall. Rainfall depths required to trigger muddy floods are lower in May and June (25±12 mm) than between July and September (46±20 mm), because of different surface conditions (crusting, roughness and crop cover). Each year, muddy floods lead to a total societal cost of 16×106–172×106 € in central Belgium, depending on the extent and intensity of thunderstorms and monetary values damaged. Recent datasets suggest that the phenomenon is becoming more frequent in central Belgium, because of land consolidation, urban sprawl and expansion of row crops, sown in spring, at the expense of winter cereals. The huge costs induced by muddy floods justify the installation of erosion control measures. It is suggested to install a grassed buffer strip at the downslope edge of cultivated hillslopes to protect houses and roads. Abstract: During the previous decade, 68% of the municipalities in the Belgian loam belt have been confronted with muddy floods from agricultural catchments after intense rainfall. A muddy flood means that runoff concentrates in a dry valley causing damage to infrastructure and housing property downstream. A typical problem area is the village of Velm where a permanent river is constrained by a culvert designed to accommodate its peak discharge. However, the design of the culvert does not take the local flooding from seven dry valleys just upstream into account. This study focuses on peak discharge from one of these agricultural catchments (ca. 300ha). The Meshed Hydrological Model (MHM) is used to evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation measures to reduce flooding. Seasonal variation of soil cover in cropland and difference in land use patterns, i.e. before and after land consolidation is explicitly taken into account. The land cover spatial pattern was mapped at regular intervals during 2003. The largest potential of runoff generation occurs in December, and therefore represents a worst-case scenario. Mitigation measures implemented after the extreme event of August 2002 (i.e. a 12ha grassed waterway and a retention dam in the thalweg) alleviate the flooding risk in Velm. The model simulates a peak discharge and a runoff volume reduction of more than 40%. The retention pond would buffer the generated runoff volume entirely for the worst-case scenario. Land consolidation carried out in the 1970s has led to an increase in peak discharge by 33% and in runoff volume by 19%. The major role played by a new consolidation road built in the thalweg on runoff concentration is highlighted. Implementation of additional soil conservation measures is therefore needed to limit runoff generation within the catchment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Though not officially considered a‘policy’ by the Lao government, resettlement of ethnic minorities has become a central feature of the rural development strategy in Laos. Over the past ten years, a majority of highland villages have been resettled downhill, and the local administrations are planning to move the remaining villages in the coming years. This article draws on a national survey about resettlement in Laos, commissioned by UNESCO and financed by UNDP, that was undertaken by the authors. It focuses on the consequences of these huge shifts of population and on the social and cultural dynamics that underlie them. It shows that the planned resettlements, which are intended to promote the‘settling’ of the highland populations by enforcing the ban on slash-and-burn agriculture and opium growing, actually cause increased and diversified rural mobility. This in turn complicates the implementation of the rural development policy and the political management of interethnic relationships. In other words, the‘settling’ process promoted by the State, because of its broad and often tragic social consequences, can paradoxically generate unplanned or unexpected further migrations, which could be called‘resettlement-induced forms of mobility’ [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Geochemical tracers were not conservative in a catchment with highly weathered soils. • Magnetic and UV tracers had low discriminating potential between land uses. • The low discrimination between sources results in great uncertainties in the results. • Quantifying sediment contributions from more than three sources remains challenging. • Despite limited discrimination, results of all tracers combinations remained consistent. An important step in the sediment source fingerprinting approach is the selection of the appropriate tracing parameters to maximize source discrimination. The use of multiple tracing properties may reduce uncertainties and increase discrimination between sources. Accordingly, this study investigates the discrimination and quantifies the contribution of sediment sources delivering sediment to a river draining a homogeneous subtropical agricultural catchment based on the combination of ultraviolet–visible spectra derived parameters (UV), magnetic (M), and geochemical tracers (GEO). The investigated catchment (Conceição River − 804 km2), located in Southern Brazil, has predominantly deep and strongly weathered Ferralsols. The main land-uses found in the area are cropland (89%), pasture (5%) and forest (5%). A total of 187 samples were collected to characterise the five main sediment sources, including cropland, pastures, unpaved roads, gullies and stream banks. A total of 53 tracers, including 21 geochemical tracers, two magnetic properties and 30 parameters derived from UV spectra, were analysed. Tracers were selected following a three step procedure, including: (i) an interquartile range test, (ii) a Kruskal–Wallis H test, and (iii) a linear discriminant function analysis (LDA). The LDA was performed using six different sets of variables: (i) GEO only; (ii) UV only; (iii) M + UV (MUV); (iv) GEO + UV (GUV); (v) GEO + M (GM) and (vi) GEO + M + UV (GMUV). The selected tracers were introduced into a mass balance mixing model to estimate the source contributions to in-stream sediment by minimizing the sum of square residuals. Most geochemical tracers were considered not conservative by using the interquartile range test in this catchment with highly weathered soils. The GM approach resulted in the highest percentage of samples correctly classified (SCC), with 74%, followed by the approaches with GMUV and GUV, with 73%. Alternative tracers, UV individually or combined with M tracers, correctly classified only 59 and 60% of the samples, respectively. Moreover, they did not provide significant additional discrimination power even when combined with the GEO tracers. The apportionment model resulted in similar source contribution results for all approaches, with the absence of significant difference when comparing the mean source contributions obtained for the entire set of sediment samples (Cropland: 17–23%; Pastures: 24–34%; Unpaved Roads: 3–12%; Stream Banks: 26–31%; Gullies: 14–19%). Due to the strong homogeneity of soil types found in the Conceição catchment, these differences in source contributions remained very low and the results of the mixing model were impacted by the high number of potential sources and the relatively limited quality of the sediment source discrimination. According to the model results, the low discrimination between the potential sediment sources illustrates the difficulties for discriminating land-used based sediment sources, with more than three potential sources, in homogeneous catchments with highly weathered soils (e.g. Ferralsols, Nitisols) under tropical conditions. • Sediment cores were collected in ponds draining contrasted agricultural catchments. • Paleproductivity was reconstructed during the 20th century based on multiproxy sediment analysis. • Between 1950 and 1965 organic matter was mainly supplied by terrigenous sources. • After 1970, acceleration of primary production was recorded in water bodies • Autochthonous production was highly correlated to the use of N fertilizers for the 1950–1990 period. Excessive inputs of sediment and acceleration of primary production have been observed worldwide in a large number of water bodies. Human-environment interactions were recognized as one of the main drivers of this evolution during the 20th century with the occurrence of major landscape changes and a greater use of agricultural inputs. In this study, we used paleo-production proxies such as chlorophyll-a, organic matter properties (TOC and TN concentrations, δ13C and δ15N) measured in sediment cores dated with fallout 210Pb ex and 137Cs activities for reconstructing changes in accumulation rates and sources of organic matter during the recent period of agricultural intensification (1920–2020). In order to record these changes at the regional scale, sediment cores were collected at the outlet of several headwater catchments (n = 9), covering a wide range of land covers / land uses across the Loire River basin (117,000 km²), France. The rates of sedimentary organic matter deposition in the studied water bodies accelerated from 1950 onwards (+48 %). Between 1950 and 1970, the signature of sedimentary organic matter indicates a dominant contribution of soil-derived inputs. This period corresponds to major landscape modifications across the basin (land consolidation, stream re-design, implementation of tile drains) driving a general acceleration of erosion rates. Then, from 1960 onwards, chlorophyll-a and C/N proxies indicate an increase in primary production coupled with a decrease of terrigenous supply in agricultural catchments. These proxies were strongly correlated to the agricultural inputs during the 1955–1990 period (e.g., r = 0.9 between chlorophyll-a content and N inputs), suggesting a progressive eutrophication of these reservoirs driven by increasing fertilizer use. During these 35 years, sedimentary organic matter deposition rates increased on average by 30 %. During the 1990s, despite a slight reduction in fertilizer use (−13 %), the paleo-production proxies (e.g. chlorophyll-a) still indicate a positive trend suggesting the contribution of another driving factor such as climate warming or again nutrient release from soils and sediments. In the absence of long term geochemical and sediment input monitoring, paleolimnological reconstructions provide a powerful tool to reconstruct past agricultural pressures in rural environments. This study illustrates the impact of intensive farming on water body siltation driven by varying sources of organic material during the 20th century. In addition, these results suggest that eutrophication processes of these reservoirs with contrasting land uses started during the 1960–1970 period and are still ongoing nowadays. Information on the main sources supplying deleterious sediment loads to river systems is needed to improve our understanding of soil erosion processes to better target erosion control measures. In particular, it is important to quantify the respective contributions of surface and subsurface sources to material degrading waterbodies. Radiocesium (137Cs), emitted during thermonuclear bomb testing (~1950–1980) and nuclear accidents provides significant discrimination between surface material exposed to atmospheric fallout and subsurface material sheltered from it. A systematic worldwide review of research articles (n = 123) that used 137Cs to trace sediment sources showed that the United Kingdom (n = 24), Australia (n = 23) and the United States (n = 20) had the highest number of publications utilizing 137Cs in a sediment tracing framework. In contrast, few studies were published for catchments in Africa (n = 9) or South America (n = 2). In the northern hemisphere, positive relationships were evident between 137Cs activities in surface and subsurface sources and the proportion of thermonuclear bomb fallout. However, given the low proportions of fallout received in regions between 0 and 20°N and 0–20°S, the potential application of 137Cs tracing techniques may be limited in this area of the world as well as in agricultural regions with severe soil erosion (i.e. Chinese Loess Plateau and South Africa). In total, 94% of the studies researching surface and subsurface sources that analysed 137Cs as a potential tracing property included this parameter in end-member mixing models. The main challenges for the future of this technique are related to the access to ultra-low background gamma spectrometry facilities and the development of surrogate tracers. Future research should ensure that basic catchment information and details on the sampling design are properly documented to ensure studies are reproducible. Moreover, researchers should provide raw measurement data to help improve our global understanding of 137Cs dynamics in soil erosion research. • The meta-analysis compiled 123 articles considering 137Cs for sediment tracing. • 70% of these studies were conducted in Europe, North America and Australia. • Fallout levels are too low in regions near the Equator and with extensive erosion. • 137Cs was included in 71 to 94% of studies modelling source contributions. • Future research should systematically include details on sampling design. Abandonment of agricultural land is widespread in many developed countries. These surfaces are projected to increase significantly worldwide during the 21th century. Identifying potential relationships between land abandonment and soil erosion dynamics over the long term (100 years) is therefore essential for predicting the environmental consequences of this extensive land use change. Accordingly, sediment cores were collected in two highland catchments of central France in order to reconstruct the change of sediment delivery during the last century. The results showed a substantial decline (71–78%) of rural population in both sites since 1900. This decrease occurred simultaneously with a sharp decline (85–95%) of the surface of arable land: previously cultivated areas were mainly converted into forests as the result of natural and anthropogenic processes. Consequently, sediment deliveries significantly decreased (75–99%) in both catchments. These trends were nevertheless interrupted by the implementation of afforestation works between 1945 and 1970 in one of the catchments. During these works, erosion rates increased three-fold because of extensive soil disturbance, and sediment delivery stabilized only 15 years after the onset of these management operations. Overall, this study demonstrates the long-term effect of land abandonment on soil erosion, which supplements the more widely reported acceleration trend of soil erosion because of agricultural intensification. New Caledonia is an island located in the south-west of the Pacific Ocean, containing large nickel resources. It is currently the world's sixth largest nickel producer. Although the mining sector has contributed to the economic growth in New Caledonia since the 1870s, it is considered to be the main driver of environmental degradation. Indeed, the excessive sediment input generated by soil erosion from open-cast mining areas has strongly modified the morphology of rivers (hyper-sedimentation) and impacted the island's ecosystems (flooding, lagoon siltation, water pollution).Nevertheless, the past and ongoing contributions of suspended sediment sources have not yet been quantified. The objective of the current research is to characterize the evolution of sediment source contributions over the last 40 years to identify the mining activities impacts (showing a peak in the 1970s) and the sediment pollution.To this end, a pilot sediment tracing study has been conducted in one of the first areas exploited for nickel mining, the 400-km² Thio River catchment. Mining (ie. overburden, bare mining soil and access road erosion) and no-mining sources (ie. landslides, bushfires) were identified with an approach combining radionuclide and geochemical measurements. In addition, a 1.60 m long sediment core was collected in the Thio river deltaic floodplain in April 2016. Sediment dating was carried out on the chronology of flooding based on a rainfall-discharge statistical analysis in the Thio region. A distribution modelling approach was used to reconstruct sediment source contribution temporal variability in the successive sediment layers.Results demonstrate that the contribution of mining sources largely dominated with a mean contribution of 65 % over the entire profile. The fifteen flooding events identified by the statistical analysis generated the deposition of around 1 m of sediment in the floodplain at that location over the last forty years. An increase in the mining source contribution was observed along the sediment profile and particularly at 1-m depth, i.e. a depth corresponding to the 1970s nickel production peak. In the future, similar studies should be carried out in other catchments draining mines in New Caledonia to investigate whether the temporal changes in the mining source contribution were similar to those observed in the Thio river catchment in order to guide the implementation of control measures. The definition of the Anthropocene boundary is being discussed across various disciplines. In this study, we have focused our research on the sedimentary responses of landscape to human activity, as a response to agricultural changes over the 20th century in Europe.In the absence of long-term records of sediment transported by river systems, sediment deposited in lakes may represent a powerful archive for reconstructing the evolution of sediment yields in response to global changes. Accordingly, sedimentary fluxes were reconstructed in 10 ponds located at the outlet of small agricultural headwater catchments distributed across the Loire Basin, in Western France. These study sites were selected in order to represent a large variety of land cover/land use changes, landscape morphologies and agriculture dynamics. The objective was to investigate whether a common evolution of sediment yields was observed.The results obtained show the occurrence of a general transition in the sediment production during the second half of the 20th century (between 1945 and 1960), with two contrasting trajectories. On the one hand, sediment delivery decreased in catchments witnessing a decline of agriculture, with a 70% decrease of sediment delivery. On the other hand, in lowland areas affected by intensification of land management after WWII (land consolidation, stream redesign, edge removal or agricultural drainage implementation), sediment deposits record a sharp acceleration, by one order of magnitude. The recent sediment dynamics therefore emphasizes a significant change associated to the post-1950 period, with a sharp positive or negative trend. These local observations are in agreement with data compiled from other countries across the Northern Hemisphere (Europe, USA, Japan). Spectrocolorimetric properties provide a quick, low-cost and non-destructive alternative to the measurement of geochemical and organic matter parameters. Their potential to discriminate between forest, cultivated and subsoil sources was tested in soils and sediment collected in coastal catchments draining the main radioactive pollution plume of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.Fifteen spectrocolorimetric properties were determined in potential source (n=37) and sediment (n=400) samples collected during 13 campaigns from 2011–2017 in two catchments (covering a total surface area of 450 km²) draining the main radioactive pollution plume. Potential sources included topsoil from forest and cropland sources along with subsoil material originating from landslides, channel banks and the decontamination of cultivated areas. The optimum set of parameters used in the mixed linear model to calculate the sediment source contributions was obtained through the use of a range test, the Kruskal-Wallis H-test, and a linear discriminant analysis. Nine colour parameters correctly classified 100% of the source samples (forest, subsoil and cultivated sources). The results illustrate that cultivated landscapes were the main source of sediment to these river systems (mean 56%, SD 34%) followed by subsoil (mean 26%, SD 16%) and forest sources (mean 21%, SD 24%). However, these contributions strongly varied over time, with a peak of subsoil contributions (mean 57%, SD 17%) in Fall 2015, coinciding with the occurrence of a typhoon after the remediation works. These original results demonstrate that spectrocolorimetric measurements provide a powerful tool for the monitoring of the effectiveness of remediation works in this post-accidental context. In the context of elevated concerns related to nuclear accidents and warfare, the lessons learnt from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011 are important. In particular, Japanese authorities implemented an ambitious decontamination program to reduce the air dose rate in order to facilitate the return of the local inhabitants to previously evacuated areas. This approach contrasts the strategy adopted in Chernobyl, where the most contaminated areas remain off limits. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of the Japanese decontamination strategy on the dispersion of radioactive contaminant fluxes across mountainous landscapes exposed to typhoons has not been quantified. Based on the unique combination of river monitoring and modeling in a catchment representative of the most impacted area in Japan, we demonstrate that decontamination of 16% of the catchment area resulted in a decrease of 17% of sediment-bound radioactive fluxes in rivers. Decontamination operations were therefore relatively effective, although they could only be conducted in a small part of the area due to the dominance of steep forested slopes. In fact, 67% of the initial radiocesium contamination was calculated to remain stored in forested landscapes, which may contribute to future downstream radiocesium dispersion during erosive events. Given that only a limited proportion of the initial population had returned in 2019 (~30%), it raises the question as to whether decontaminating a small percentage of the contaminated area was worth the effort, the price, and the amount of waste generated? Soil erosion is recognized as one of the main processes of land degradation in agricultural areas. High suspended sediment loads, often generated from eroding agricultural landscapes, are known to degrade downstream environments. Accordingly, there is a need to understand soil erosion dynamics during flood events. Suspended sediment was therefore sampled in the river network and at tile drain outlets during five flood events in a lowland drained catchment in France. Source and sediment fallout radionuclide concentrations (7Be, 210Pbxs) were measured to quantify both the fraction of recently eroded particles transported during flood events and their residence time. Results indicate that the mean fraction of recently eroded sediment, estimated for the entire Louroux catchment, increased from 45 ± 20% to 80 ± 20% between December 2013 and February 2014, and from 65 ± 20% to 80 ± 20% in January 2016. These results demonstrate an initial flush of sediment previously accumulated in the river channel before the increasing supply of sediment recently eroded from the hillslopes during subsequent events. This research highlights the utility of coupling continuous river monitoring and fallout radionuclide measurements to increase our understanding of sediment dynamics and improve the management of soil and water resources in agricultural catchments. Saharan dust outbreaks have profound effects on ecosystems, climate, human health, and the cryosphere in Europe. However, the spatial deposition pattern of Saharan dust is poorly known due to a sparse network of ground measurements. Following the extreme dust deposition event of February 2021 across Europe, a citizen science campaign was launched to sample dust on snow over the Pyrenees and the European Alps. This somewhat improvised campaign triggered wide interest since 152 samples were collected from the snow in the Pyrenees, the French Alps, and the Swiss Alps in less than 4 weeks. Among the 152 samples, 113 in total could be analysed, corresponding to 70 different locations. The analysis of the samples showed a large variability in the dust properties and amount. We found a decrease in the deposited mass and particle sizes with distance from the source along the transport path. This spatial trend was also evident in the elemental composition of the dust as the iron mass fraction decreased from 11 % in the Pyrenees to 2 % in the Swiss Alps. At the local scale, we found a higher dust mass on south-facing slopes, in agreement with estimates from high-resolution remote sensing data. This unique dataset, which resulted from the collaboration of several research laboratories and citizens, is provided as an open dataset to benefit a large community and to enable further scientific investigations.
