PurposeThe intent of this paper is to discuss the use of statistical mathematics in property valuation and the wider question concerning the role of mathematics in the field of economics.Design/methodology/approachThis paper reviews the evolution of the application of mathematics, including statistics in economics and drawing conclusions about applicability and effectiveness of quantitative modelling in property valuation.FindingsThis paper discusses the future use of statistical models in valuation and the need to recognise the relationships between market participants and the increasingly complex environment, and their impact on value. This would suggest adopting modelling techniques from behavioural economics.Practical implicationsThis paper highlights the difference between quantitative and qualitative models and discusses the role that each can play in property valuation.Originality/valueThis paper provides insights on the development of statistical modelling and discusses the application of the same in property valuation.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk of dementia. An association between vitamin D deficiency and subjective cognitive complaints in geriatric patients has been reported. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the neurochemical and behavioral effects of vitamin D3 (1α-25 Dihydroxyvitamin D3) on 2-, 6-, 13-, 22-, and 31-month-old male Wistar rats. Research Methods & Procedures: The animals were supplemented with vitamin D at doses of 42 IU/kg and 420 IU/kg for 21 days. The radial maze test was performed to evaluate spatial memory. After the behavioral test, the frontal cortex and hippocampus were dissected for the enzyme immunoassay analyses to measure cytokine levels (TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10). Results: Our results showed that vitamin D supplementation was able to reverse the spatial memory impairment at the supplemented doses (42 and 420 IU/kg) in 6-, 13-, and 22-month-old animals and at a dose of 420 IU/kg in 31-month-old animals. Conclusion: Our results suggest vitamin D has a modulatory action on pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, since older animals showed increased cytokine levels than the 2-month-old animals. The lower dose (42 IU/kg) was able to regulate both pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus. Our results suggest that vitamin D may exert an immunomodulating effect on aging

The level of satisfaction that households have with their housing is important for people to function properly, as it largely determines their life satisfaction. Housing satisfaction is a multidimensional concept that can be defined, measured, and analysed in various ways. The aim of the article is to identify the housing satisfaction of Polish households in terms of living space, housing standard, and housing expenses, and to identify the main determinants of housing satisfaction. Factors that have a major impact on housing satisfaction are classified based on a literature review. The sources of Poles’ housing satisfaction are identified using ordered logistic regression. This article is one of the first attempts to analyse housing satisfaction in a post-socialist Central and Eastern European economy.

The purpose of the study is the following: (1) indicate the economic sources of the definition of value, including the market value of real estate, (2) present the definition and interpretation of this category, (3) its evolution and the difficult path towards its acceptance in Polish conditions, and (4) identify the reasons for this category being frequently misunderstood in the professional environment. A research hypothesis was put forward that the market value is of a contract nature, its definition and interpretation may change. The study employed a critical analysis of the source literature and legal documents as its methods.

Background: Leonotis nepetifolia (L.) R. Br. (Lamiaceae) is a shrub traditionally used to alleviate inflammatory conditions. Objective: The present study aimed at investigating the biological activity of methanolic nontrans-formed and transformed Rhizobium rhizogenes root extracts from L. nepetifolia against human melanoma cells. Methods: Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity properties, the impact on topoisomerase I activity, and proapoptotic activity were evaluated by the MTT test, comet assay, topoisomerase I assay, and fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis. Moreover, the expressions of p53 were examined by qPCR and Western blot analysis. Docking studies were conducted to assess the potential interac-tions of the identified phytochemicals with the p53 binding protein Mdm-2, and computational analyses exhibited their antioxidant potential. Results: Both extracts showed cytotoxic potential against human melanoma cells, but generally the activity was more potent for transformed roots than untransformed (IC50 760 μg/mL and 980 μg/mL, respectively). A similar effect was revealed during the evaluation of genotoxic and proapoptotic properties. Moreover, the expression of p53 was also found to be increased after ex-tract treatment. The most dominant identified compounds in both extracts were as follows: (+)-catechin, p-coumaric acid, m-coumaric acid, and (+)-rosmarinic acid. Docking studies and compu-tational analysis showed that (+)-rosmarinic acid possesses the highest binding affinity to the p53 binding protein, Mdm-2, and exhibits the best antioxidant property from the most commonly iden-tified phytochemicals. Conclusion: Our findings revealed the potential of L. nepetifolia transformed root extract as a source of bioactive compounds with cytotoxic, genotoxic, and proapoptotic activity against human melanoma cells as well as antioxidant properties.

Introduction: The newest data has reported that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and PERK-dependent Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) signaling pathway may constitute a key factor in colorectal cancer (CRC) pathogenesis on the molecular level. Nowadays used anti-cancer treatment strategies are still insufficient, since patients suffer from various side effects that are directly evoked via therapeutic agents characterized by non-specific action in normal and cancer cells. Aim: Thereby, the main aim of the presented research was to analyze the effectiveness of the small-molecule PERK inhibitor NCI 12487 in an in vitro cellular model of CRC. Materials and methods: The study was performed on colorectal cancer HT-29 and normal human colon epithelial CCD 841 CoN cell lines. The cytotoxicity was measured by XTT assay, evaluation of apoptosis was performed by caspase-3 assay, whereas cell cycle analysis via the propidium iodide (PI) staining. Results: Results obtained have demonstrated that the investigated compound is selective only for HT-29 cancer cells, since at 25 μM concentration it significantly decreased HT-29 cells viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner, evoked increased caspase-3 activity and arrest in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle. Moreover, NCI 12487 compound markedly decreased HT-29 cells viability, increased caspase-3 activity and percentage of cells in sub-G0/G1, thus promoted apoptosis of cancer HT-29 cells with induced ER stress conditions. Conclusion: Thus, based on the results obtained in this study it may be concluded that small-molecule modulators of the PERK-dependent UPR signaling pathway may constitute an innovative, targeted treatment strategy against CRC.

Purpose: The review of indications for surgical treatment of major salivary glands in adults hospitalized in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw. Materials and methods: The retrospective analysis was based on the 1173 postoperative histopathological examinations of the salivary glands collected over a period of 10 years (2010-2020). Analysis included histopathological diagnosis, localization of lesions, multifocality, complete resection, lymph node involvement, as well as demographical data of sex and age. Results: Over half (61.38%) of all indications for surgical treatment of the salivary glands were benign tumors (n = 720) with the most common pleomorphic adenoma, which accounted for 33.5% of all cases (n = 393). The next most frequent group of diagnoses were non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary glands, 24.98% of all cases (n = 293). Malignant neoplasms of the salivary glands accounted for 13.64% of all diagnoses (n = 160). Salivary gland diseases slightly predominated among the female sex, with a particularly pronounced predominance in pleomorphic adenoma. Men, on the other hand, were treated more often for malignant neoplasms. The mean age of the patients was the lowest in the group of non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary glands. The mean age of patients with malignant neoplasms was significantly higher than in other pathologies. The largest tumors size was identified for malignant neoplasms. Diseases of the salivary glands treated surgically were most often located in the parotid gland, with the exception of non-neoplastic diseases, which most often involved the submandibular gland. Conclusions: Surgical management in pathologies of the salivary glands applies to all types of lesions, both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. Patients with particular diseases are characterized by a different structure of age, sex and location of changes.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in the general population and, to date, constitutes a major therapeutic challenge. In the pathogenesis of AD, aggregates of amyloid β (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) containing Tau-microtubule-associated protein (tau) are known to trigger a neuroinflammatory response with subsequent formation of an inflammasome. In particular, the NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is thought to play a crucial role in AD-related pathology. While the mechanisms for NLRP3 activation are not fully understood, it has been demonstrated that, after detection of protein aggregates, NLRP3 induces pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin 18 (IL-18) or interleukin 1β (IL-1β), that further potentiate AD progression. Specific inhibitors of NLRP3 that exhibit various mechanisms to attenuate the activity of NLRP3 have been tested in in vivo studies and have yielded promising results, as shown by the reduced level of tau and Aβ aggregates and diminished cognitive impairment. Herein, we would like to summarize the current state of knowledge on NLRP3 inflammasome priming, activation, and its actual role in AD pathogenesis, and to characterize the NLRP3 inhibitors that have been studied most and their impact on AD-related pathology.

Abstract: The human lifespan is increasing, and mankind is aging. It is estimated that, until the year 2050, this population worldwide will reach 22% of the total world population. Along with aging, the human immunologic system changes, a process called immunosenescence or even inflammaging. The aging immune system increases mortality and morbidity in the elderly mainly because it loses its capacity to react against internal and external aggressions. There is a decrease in B and T lymphocytes and CD4+ lymphocytes lose the CD28 protein expression that is needed for costimulation, leading to reduced response to viral infections. This could be responsible for more deleterious consequences of coronavirus disease infection in the elderly. Besides that, the human brain ages, being more susceptible to damage and viral infections, such as COVID-19 infection. There are several pathways that could explain the susceptibility to the COVID-19 infection in the elderly brain, one of them is binding to ACE 2 receptors in cerebral cells through the spike protein. It has been reported that glial cells and neurons, in addition to endothelial and arterial smooth muscle cells in the brain, express the ACE 2 receptor, which would justify the neurological symptoms and consequences of the disease. This infection can have several clinical manifestations such as hemorrhagic stroke, delirium and long-term cognitive complaints, such as brain fog, polyneuropathies, short time memory complaints and insomnia. Although none of the studies could prove that there is a long-term neuronal damage, there are clinical sequelae that should be taken into account and more studies are necessary to know the consequences of the infection in the elderly brain.

The article identifies and provides a synthetic overview of various concepts relating to the evolution of the real estate market and property valuation. According to the authors, the processes observed on the real estate market necessitate changes in training programs for property valuers. Real estate appraisers should be able to cope with new consumer expectations and requirements, and they should be well versed in modern technological solutions and analytical tools. The study indicates that, in order to face the challenges of the modern world, the appraisal profession should undergo a paradigm shift to embrace the fact that real estate is a commodity and that globalization is inevitable on the real estate market. Due to the high value of urban areas, a modern specialist determining the value of real estate is particularly needed there. Property valuers should develop new analytical skills, and they should rely on modern data processing tools to collect and process information. Additionally, recent events, including the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrate that property appraisers should be better prepared for dealing with unprecedented circumstances. The training curricula proposed in this article should increase property valuers’ competencies and effectively support real estate market entities and sustainable urban development.

lt;bgt;Introduction:lt;/bgt; Colorectal cancer (CRC), despite intensive research on the improvement of diagnosis and treatment, is still the second most deadly cancer in Poland in terms of mortality. One of the factors predisposing to a higher risk of CRC may be the individual differences in the effectiveness of proteins responsible for the metabolism of xenobiotics - it seems that the removal of potentially harmful exogenous substances significantly reduces the risk of carcinogenesis.lt;/brgt;lt;/brgt;lt;bgt;Aim:lt;/bgt; In this work, we analyzed the effect of polymorphisms of genes responsible for metabolizing xenobiotics on the risk of CRC - rs72554606 polymorphism of N AT 1 gene, rs1799930 polymorphism of N AT 2 gene and rs1799814 polymorphism of CYP1A1 gene, as well as the level of expression of these genes.lt;/brgt;lt;/brgt;lt;bgt; Conclusions:lt;/bgt; The results indicate that the GC genotype for N AT 1 and the GA genotype for CYP1A1 may increase the risk of CRC, and in those already diagnosed with colorectal cancer, the expression level of NAT1 is significantly lower than in the control. We believe that these factors may have potential prognostic and diagnostic significance in the treatment of CRC.

Synthesis, folding, and structural maturation of proteins occur in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Accumulation of misfolded or unfolded proteins in the ER lumen contributes to the induction of ER stress and activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) signaling pathway. Under ER stress, the UPR tries to maintain cellular homeostasis through different pathways, including the inositol-requiring enzyme 1 alpha (IRE1α)-dependent ones. IRE1α is located in an ER membrane, and it is evolutionarily the oldest UPR sensor. Activation of IRE1α via ER stress triggers the formation of the spliced form of XBP1 (XBP1s), which has been linked to a pro-survival effect in cancer cells. The role of IRE1α is critical for blood cancer cells, and it was found that the levels of IRE1α and XBP1s are elevated in various hematological malignancies. This review paper is focused on summarizing the latest knowledge about the role of IRE1α and on the assessment of the potential utility of IRE1α inhibitors in blood cancers.

Women older than 60 have a higher risk of dementia, aging-related cognitive decline, and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) than the rest of the population. The main reason is hormonal senescence after menopause, a period characterized by a decline in estrogen levels. Since the effectiveness of drugs currently approved for the treatment of AD is limited, it is necessary to seek the development of new therapeutic strategies. Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in AD patients and individuals with dementia in general. The supplementation of this vitamin in dementia patients might be an interesting approach for increasing the effectiveness of pre-existing medications for dementia treatment. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the effect of vitamin D treatment associated with memantine and donepezil in female mice submitted to ovariectomy (OVX) for five months and subjected to a dementia animal model induced by intracerebroventricular injection of aggregated amyloid βeta (Aβ

α-Synucleinopathies comprise a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by altered accumulation of a protein called α-synuclein inside neurons and glial cells. This aggregation leads to the formation of intraneuronal inclusions, Lewy bodies, that constitute the hallmark of α-synuclein pathology. The most prevalent α-synucleinopathies are Parkinson’s disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). To date, only symptomatic treatment is available for these disorders, hence new approaches to their therapy are needed. It has been observed that GBA1 mutations are one of the most impactful risk factors for developing α-synucleinopathies such as PD and DLB. Mutations in the GBA1 gene, which encodes a lysosomal hydrolase β-glucocerebrosidase (GCase), cause a reduction in GCase activity and impaired α-synuclein metabolism. The most abundant GBA1 gene mutations are N370S or N409S, L444P/L483P and E326K/E365K. The mechanisms by which GCase impacts α-synuclein aggregation are poorly understood and need to be further investigated. Here, we discuss some of the potential interactions between α-synuclein and GCase and show how GBA1 mutations may impact the course of the most prevalent α-synucleinopathies.

The aim of the research was to check whether it is possible to use fragments of type IV collagen to obtain, as a result of self-assembling, stable spatial structures that could be used to prepare new materials useful in regenerative medicine. Collagen IV fragments were obtained by using DMT/NMM/TosO− as a coupling reagent. The ability to self-organize and form stable spatial structures was tested by the CD method and microscopic techniques. Biological studies covered: resazurin assay (cytotoxicity assessment) on BJ, BJ-5TA and C2C12 cell lines; an alkaline version of the comet assay (genotoxicity), Biolegend Legendplex human inflammation panel 1 assay (SC cell lines, assessment of the inflammation activity) and MTT test to determine the cytotoxicity of the porous materials based on collagen IV fragments. It was found that out of the pool of 37 fragments (peptides 1–33 and 2.1–2.4) reconstructing the outer sphere of collagen IV, nine fragments (peptides: 2, 4, 5, 6, 14, 15, 25, 26 and 30), as a result of self-assembling, form structures mimicking the structure of the triple helix of native collagens. The stability of spatial structures formed as a result of self-organization at temperatures of 4 °C, 20 °C, and 40 °C was found. The application of the MST method allowed us to determine the Kd of binding of selected fragments of collagen IV to ITGα1β1. The stability of the spatial structures of selected peptides made it possible to obtain porous materials based on their equimolar mixture. The formation of the porous materials was found for cross-linked structures and the material stabilized only by weak interactions. All tested peptides are non-cytotoxic against all tested cell lines. Selected peptides also showed no genotoxicity and no induction of immune system responses. Research on the use of porous materials based on fragments of type IV collagen, able to form stable spatial structures as scaffolds useful in regenerative medicine, will be continued.

The postmenopausal period is characterized by a decrease in the hormonal supply which is associated with Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Vitamin D is neuroprotective and can be used in combination with pre-existing medications to improve its effects. The objective was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D associated with memantine and donepezil in female mice submitted to ovariectomy (OVX) for 5 months and subjected to an AD-induced dementia model. Animals were divided into 5 groups who received 17 days of treatment and were subjected to behavioral tests. The animals underwent euthanasia at 18th day. OVX groups exhibit reduced levels of E2 and triple treatment group had high levels of vitamin D. The induction of dementia with OVX induced short- and long-term spatial and habituation memories damage. Also, induced reduction of BDNF and IL-4 levels in hippocampus, and increasing levels of TNFα in hippocampus and of IL-1β in hippocampus and frontal cortex of animals, as well as a significant increase on GFAP immunoreactivity. Triple-association treatment reversed the effects of long-term spatial and habituation memories damage, as well as reversed changes in TNFα, IL-1β, IL-4 and GFAP immunoreactivity levels in hippocampus of treated animals. Therapeutic association has beneficial effects on memory and inflammation parameters in female mice subjected to OVX and the AD animal model of dementia.

The income approach is the subject of debates conducted by academics and practitioners as one of the most controversial approaches in valuation practice. It is also somewhat differently understood by the three historically shaped valuation schools (US, British and German). This article compares the main assumptions underpinning the income approach’s investment method between the three schools in order to: 1) determine why the assumptions change and in what direction; 2) assess the advantages and disadvantages of explicit cash flows; and 3) evaluate the advisability of incorporating explicit cash flows into Polish valuation methodology. A thesis is formulated that, in Poland, the investment method should use implicit cash flows for estimating the market value of properties. There is a need to include explicit cash flow in university programs, but their use should be limited to valuations undertaken to determine the investment value of a property or the market value of portfolio properties, as well as valuations carried out for the purposes of financial reporting as required by EU legislation (MSSF 13 and MSR 40). The article was prepared based on the review and analysis of the relevant literature.

The kingdom of plants as a “green biofabric” of valuable bioactive molecules has long been used in many ailments. Currently, extracts and pure compounds of plant origin are used to aid in pigmentation skin problems by influencing the process of melanogenesis. Melanin is a very important pigment that protects human skin against ultraviolet radiation and oxidative stress. It is produced by a complex process called melanogenesis. However, disturbances in the melanogenesis mechanism may increase or decrease the level of melanin and generate essential skin problems, such as hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Accordingly, inhibitors or activators of pigment formation are desirable for medical and cosmetic industry. Such properties may be exhibited by molecules of plant origin. Therefore, that literature review presents reports on plant extracts, pure compounds and compositions that may modulate melanin production in living organisms. The potential of plants in the therapy of pigmentation disorders has been highlighted.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the primary cause of blindness in developed countries. With the progressive aging of the population, AMD is a significant ophthalmological problem in the population over 50 years of age. The etiology of AMD is known to be based on various biochemical, immunological and molecular pathways and to be influenced by a range of genetic and environmental elements. This review provides an overview of the pathophysiological role of oxidative stress and free radicals in the retina with a special focus on the DNA repair efficiency and enzymatic antioxidant defense. It also presents a correlation between miRNA profile and AMD, and indicates their involvement in inflammation, angiogenesis, increased oxidation of cellular components, enzymatic antioxidant capacity and DNA repair efficiency, which play particularly important roles in AMD pathogenesis. Gene silencing by miRNAs can induce changes in antioxidant enzymes, leading to a complex interplay between redox imbalance by free radicals and miRNAs in modulating cellular redox homeostasis.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) constitutes the most common type of glaucoma. Emerging evidence suggests that Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress and the protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK)-mediated Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) signaling pathway play a key role in POAG pathogenesis. Thus, the main aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the PERK inhibitor LDN-0060609 in cellular model of glaucoma using primary human trabecular meshwork (HTM) cells. To evaluate the level of the ER stress marker proteins, Western blotting and TaqMan gene expression assay were used. The cytotoxicity was measured by XTT, LDH assays and Giemsa staining, whereas genotoxicity via comet assay. Changes in cell morphology were assessed by phase-contrast microscopy. Analysis of apoptosis was performed by caspase-3 assay and flow cytometry (FC), whereas cell cycle progression by FC. The results obtained have demonstrated that LDN-0060609 triggered a significant decrease of ER stress marker proteins within HTM cells with induced ER stress conditions. Moreover, LDN-0060609 effectively increased viability, reduced DNA damage, increased proliferation, restored normal morphology, reduced apoptosis and restored normal cell cycle distribution of HTM cells with induced ER stress conditions. Thereby, PERK inhibitors, such as LDN-0060609, may provide an innovative, ground-breaking treatment strategy against POAG.

The consumption of soft drinks has increased considerably in recent decades, mainly cola soft drinks. Excessive consumption of cola-based soft drinks is associated with several diseases and cognitive decline, particularly memory impairment. Furthermore, diets with high sugar can promote insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and dyslipidemia.Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of cola soft drink intake on behavioral alterations and oxidative damage in 2-, 8- and 14- month-old male Wistar rats.The soft drink groups drank soft drink and/or water ad libitum during 67 days, the control groups ingested only water. Radial-arm maze and Y-maze were used to evaluate spatial memory, open-field to evaluate the habituation memory, and inhibitory avoidance to evaluate aversive memory. The behavioral tests started at the day 57 and finished at day 67 of treatment. At 68th day, the rats were killed; frontal cortex and hippocampus were dissected to the analysis of antioxidants enzymes catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD); and the oxidative markers thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and dichloro-dihydro-fluorescein diacetate (DCFH) were measured in the hippocampus.The cola-based soft drink intake caused memory impairment in the radial-arm maze, Y-maze task, and open-field in the 2- and 8-month-old rat, but not in the 14-month-old. There were no difference among groups in the inhibitory avoidance test. In the frontal cortex, soft drink intake reduced CAT activity in the 8-month-old rats and SOD activity in the 8- and 14-month-old rats. In the hippocampus, the soft drink increased CAT activity in 2- and 8-month-old rats, increased DCFH levels at all ages, and increased TBARS levels in 2-month-rats. Therefore, the results show that long-term soft drink intake leads to memory impairment and oxidative stress. The younger seems to be more susceptible to the soft drink alterations on behavior; however, soft drink caused alterations in the oxidative system at all ages evaluated.

This paper contains structured information on photodynamic diagnostics. Photodynamic diagnostics is a young diagnostic modality used in the detection of pre-neoplastic and very early neoplastic lesions. A characteristic feature of the presented method is its completely non-invasive nature and thus the possibility of multiple repetitions at the same patient. This is very important in modern health care and in preventive measures. Aim of the paper: The article aims to present technical and diagnostic possibilities of a photodynamic method as one of the possible modalities of screening diagnostics in patients with ambiguous clinical picture of early neoplastic lesions.

Proper heart's nomenclature is very important in daily clinical practice and research studies, and when it is consistent, it can facilitate better communication between different medical specialists. The general rule of the anatomy is to describe organs and their structures in attitudinally correct position. However, the use of the old-fashioned Valentine position (where the heart is described as if it were standing on its apex) is still in use to describe important cardiac structures. Upon closer analysis, all main chambers of the heart and their associated subcomponents have mislabeled structures that should be renamed. In this article we aimed to emphasize the limitations of Valentinian nomenclature, present proper anatomical names of the most important heart's structures and advocate to change certain mislabeled anatomical structures. Attitudinally correct designations presented in this study will benefit all medical specialties, and they will reinforce the importance of consistent orientational naming. Correct naming of heart's structures will also help improve communication between different medical specialists.

In a modern approach to palliative and hospice care, apart from pharmacological treatment, physio- and kinesiotherapy also play an important role. It affects the reduction of clinical symptoms, accompanying the basic disease and also significantly increase of the quality of life for palliative patients and their families. It becomes an inseparable element of treatment, both in outpatient care as well as in stationary care and home care. Thanks to modern forms of physio- and kinesiotherapy, it is possible to adapt therapeutic methods to the individual needs and clinical condition of the patient. Such individualization of treatment in physiotherapy is the main goal of the above methods in palliative and hospice treatment. Due to the dynamics onset of cancer in the group of geriatric patients there is a need for a broader analysis of the topic. The work presents available information of physiotherapy in palliative and hospice care. The problem of relative and absolute indications and contraindications for physiotherapy was discussed. Based analysis of the above topic can lead to the conclusion that there is a necessity undertaking further research on the impact of rehabilitation treatments on reducing patients complaints and improvement of patients life quality.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia worldwide. β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) is currently assumed to be the main cause of synaptic dysfunction and cognitive impairments in AD, but the molecular signaling pathways underlying its neurotoxic consequences have not yet been completely explored. Additional investigations regarding these pathways will contribute to development of new therapeutic targets. In context, developing evidence suggest that Aβ decreases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mostly by lowering phosphorylated cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element binding protein (CREB) protein. In fact, it has been observed that brain or serum levels of BDNF appear to be beneficial markers for cognitive condition. In addition, the participation of transcription mediated by CREB has been widely analyzed in the memory process and AD development. Designing pharmacologic or genetic therapeutic approaches based on the targeting of CREB-BDNF signaling could be a promising treatment potential for AD. In this review, we summarize data demonstrating the role of CREB-BDNF signaling pathway in cognitive status and mediation of Aβ toxicity in AD. Finally, we also focus on the developing intervention methods for improvement of cognitive decline in AD based on targeting of CREB-BDNF pathway.

Market value is one of the most difficult notions in economics. It is also one of the most puzzling in the valuation industry, although its definitions can be found in the International Valuation Standards, European Valuation Standards, RICS standards and national standards. This value tends to be given different interpretations and misconceptions surrounding it are shared by many members of the property valuer community. The many ways in which property market value is understood leads to misvaluations and significant variations between valuation results, which are damaging to the prestige of the property valuation profession. This article explores areas giving rise to the misinterpretations of property market value to provide a critical review of the existing views, and to put forward arguments explaining why they should be revised. To this end, a critical literature review and observations made by the author during discussions with valuation professionals taking skill-improvement courses, scientific conferences on valuation methodology and practice, and entry exams for the profession of property valuers are used. Three main areas conducive to the emergence of myths have been identified: the interpretation of property market value (four myths), the process of arriving at property market value (ten myths) and the interpretation of valuation results (one myth). The myths are challenged on the grounds of the market value concept and its interpretation as used in economics.

Although real estate valuation is supposed to make the market transparent, it has been noted to be partial in many countries. Analysis of literature and results of the statistical analysis of survey responses of Polish property appraisers indicated that: Property valuers operate in an environment which exerts influence on the final result of valuation. The attempts of the client to influence the valuation process and their effectiveness do not depend on the gender and age of the property appraiser. The problem of valuation bias should be seen in the weakness of the system enforcing compliance with ethical standards, with this being an area which requires reinforcement in many countries.

A major topic in discussions about environmental protection is the concept of sustainable development utilizing the economic criteria enhanced by environmental, social and ethical aspects. The concept inspired a new approach to construction and paved the way for the idea of sustainable buildings. Sustainable buildings are expected to offer economic benefits to their owners and tenants that should be reflected in property values. The authors test a hypothesis that the real estate market in Poland still fails to incorporate sustainability in property valuation. The article seeks evidence in support of this hypothesis, as well as attempting to find out why the market does not pay a premium for sustainability. To accomplish the purpose of the research, a systematic literature review, an analysis of the pilot studies available in Poland and a preliminary assessment of the ability of valuation methods to reflect sustainability in property valuations are performed. The focus of the research is on the office property market, one of the fastest growing and most modern segments of the real estate market. The conclusion drawn from the research is that, of all respondents surveyed by international studies, Polish developers, property owners, tenants and valuers know the least about sustainable building and that the evidence of the benefits of sustainable building is still unavailable in the Polish real estate market. Such benefits are rather hypothesized to exist and considered theoretically rather than empirically confirmed. It is possible that the reasons for these findings are the short period of research and problems with distinguishing sustainable buildings from conventional ones, which make it difficult for valuers to reflect the benefits of sustainability in valuations. Nevertheless, a new approach to property valuation encompassing environmental, ethical and moral aspects seems necessary. This would encourage sustainable building and green investment strategies. Sustainable valuation would also be an opportunity for the development of the valuation profession.

Lutein and zeaxanthin belong to the xanthophyll family of carotenoids, which are pigments produced by plants. Structurally, they are very similar, differing only slightly in the arrangement of atoms. Key sources of these carotenoids include kale, savoy cabbage, spinach, broccoli, peas, parsley, corn, and egg yolks. The recommended daily intake of lutein is approximately 10.0 mg and that of zeaxanthin is 2 mg. Lutein intake in adults varies, with average intakes being 1–2 mg/day. Due to the lack of synthesis of consumption of these compounds in humans, these substances are extremely important for the proper functioning of certain organs of the body (eye, skin, heart, intestines). Eating a lot of dark leafy vegetables and some fruits can help to prevent our bodies from developing diseases. The protective effects of carotenoids are mainly related to their defense against oxidative stress and their ability to scavenge free radicals. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only dietary carotenoids that accumulate in the retina, specifically the macula, and are called macular pigments. These carotenoids are concentrated by the action of specific binding proteins such as StARD3, which binds lutein, and GSTP1, which binds zeaxanthin and its dietary metabolite, mesozeaxanthin. It has been shown that supportive therapy with lutein and zeaxanthin can have a beneficial effect in delaying the progression of eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. This article presents the current state of knowledge on the role of lutein and zeaxanthin, especially from human studies targeting their metabolism and bioavailability, with recommendations to consume xanthophyll-rich foods.

Adequate housing conditions are an indicator of a decent life, whereas the lack is one of the main reason behind so-called social exclusion. The importance of housing, in ensuring the social safety of citizens, as well as supporting social equity, has been emphasized for decades. Housing, however, also has an important economic dimension. A developed housing sector, in a broad sense guaranteeing the right to housing, is indicated as one of the main conditions for long-term economic growth. The significant role of housing, in deepening integrational processes on the old continent, has also been observed by the European Union. This article is a review and comprises of an attempt to synthesize arguments justifying the need to expand the European Union policy to include housing-related issues. For this purpose, a historical context of the perception of the role of housing in the process of European integration is presented; it characterizes the main phases of incorporating housing into EU policy, as well as indicating the most important areas and instruments of the European Union’s influence on the housing policy of member countries, along with an assessment of their results. The work makes use of the method of the critical analysis of literature, as well as an analysis of EU legal regulations, accounts, and reports referring to the housing sphere. Studies confirm the need for active involvement, aimed at including housing in the scope of EU competencies. The undertaken initiatives of a political, social, economic, environmental, and legal nature are the main forms of recommendations, propositions, and instruments supporting the implementation of common values. Studies conducted to date indicate that the implementation of a single EU housing policy for all member states is neither a simple nor desired task. A more effective solution would unquestionably be seeking out general solutions, addressed to groups of countries functioning under similar conditions. A European housing programme, which holds the status of European law supporting national housing policies, should be such a solution.

Objective The aim of this prospective cohort study was to translate, validate and perform a cultural adaptation of the Polish version of the Swiss Spinal Stenosis Questionnaire (P-SSSQ), a disease-specific questionnaire for assessing symptom severity, physical function and satisfaction with treatment in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Material and methods Patients were prospectively recruited at two orthopedic centres in Krakow, Poland, between January 2011 - October 2016. During the interview, each patient completed the P-SSSQ, SF-36 Health Survey, and a demographic data questionnaire. After translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and pilot testing, assessment was made of the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and responsiveness of the P-SSSQ subscales. Results Finally, 171 consecutive patients were included in the study. Cronbach's alpha and ICC values were above 0.8 for all three subscales of the P-SSSQ. The symptom severity domain was highly negatively correlated with physical functioning and bodily pain of SF-36, with Pearson correlation coefficients of -0.68 and -0.63, respectively. The physical function domain was highly negatively correlated with physical functioning (r = -0.62). The satisfaction subscale was also highly negatively correlated with the change in the symptom severity (r = -0.61) and physical function scale (r = -0.65). Conclusions The proposed version of the P-SSSQ showed excellent measurement properties and can be considered validated for use in Polish. It is easy to understand, quick to complete, and the psychometric properties of the original version are maintained.

One of the most important features of optical biopsy methods is its non-invasive nature, high sensitivity and resolution in comparison to traditional diagnostic methods. Optical diagnostic methods, contrary to histopathological tests and biochemical analysis, do not require the collection of tissue samples for analysis, and the amount of analyzed material is practically unlimited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of spectral studies in the diagnostics of skin basal cell cancer using a protoptive device in clinical conditions. Each of the subjects was measured 4 times. The measurements were performed on the skin of a patient without a photosensitizer and on the healthy skin on the opposite side of the change in relation to the middle line, also without a photosensitizer. Patients were then given photosensitizer in form of ointment from ALA (Sigma Aldrich, USA) and lubricated with this ointment with occlusal dressing. The patient was examined again 3 h after the application. In each case the measurement time was 1.2 s. Significant differences were observed for the measurements of the sick patient's skin with photosensitizer. Significant differences in spectral curve between 570 and 780 nm were observed.

Background The aim of our study was to investigate the risk factors for falls in the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patient population in Poland. This would be a major step towards the development of new fall prevention programs. Material/Methods There were 450 RA patients who met the criteria of the American College of Rheumatology who participated in this study. The average age of patient participants was 54.2 years; the average RA duration was 15.1 years. All patients filled out the study questionnaire regarding falls, medications, and diseases, and they filled out the Polish version of the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). Results Of the 400 patients, 203 patients (51%) experienced falls. Out of the 268 falls experienced by study patients, 113 falls (42%) were due to an environmental cause, the remainder 155 falls were caused by health conditions. The number of falls positively correlated with HAQ scores (r=0.42, P0.05). Conclusions Knowledge about risk factors can help identify high-risk patients to help decrease their risk of falling, thus preventing fall-related injuries.
