Abstract Fog makes a significant contribution to the hydrology of a wide range of important terrestrial ecosystems. The amount and frequency of fog immersion are affected by rapid ongoing anthropogenic changes but the impacts of these changes remain relatively poorly understood compared with changes in rainfall. Here, we present the design and performance of a novel experiment to actively manipulate low lying fog abundance in an old‐growth tropical montane cloud forest (TMCF) in Peru—the Wayqecha Amazon Cloud Curtain Ecosystem Experiment (WACCEE). The treatment consists of a 30 m high, 40 m wide mesh curtain suspended between two towers and extending down to the ground, and two supplementary curtains orientated diagonally inwards from the top of each tower and secured to the ground upslope. The curtains divert and intercept airborne water droplets in fog moving upslope, thereby depriving a ~420 m2 patch of forest immediately behind the curtains of this water source. We monitored inside the treatment and a nearby unmodified control plot various metrics of water availability (air humidity, vapour pressure deficit, leaf wetness and soil moisture) and other potentially confounding variables (radiation, air and soil temperature) above and below the forest canopy. The treatment caused a strong reduction in both air humidity and leaf wetness, and an increase in vapour pressure deficit, above the canopy compared to the control plot. This effect was most pronounced during the nighttime (20:00–05:00). Below‐canopy shifts within the treatment were more subtle: relative humidity at 2 m height above the ground was significantly suppressed during the daytime, while soil moisture was apparently elevated. The treatment caused a small but significant increase in air temperature above the canopy but a decrease in temperature in and near the soil, while mixed effects were observed at 2 m height above the ground. Above‐canopy radiation was slightly elevated on the treatment relative to the control, particularly during the dry season. Further application of the method in other systems where fog plays a major role in ecosystem processes could improve our understanding of the ecological impacts of this important but understudied climate driver.

Abstract Background The PALLAS trial investigated the addition of palbociclib to standard adjuvant endocrine therapy to reduce breast cancer recurrence. This pre-specified analysis was conducted to determine whether adjuvant palbociclib benefited patients diagnosed with lower risk stage IIA disease compared to those with higher stage disease. Methods PALLAS was an international, multicenter, randomized, open-label, phase III trial, representing a public–private partnership between Pfizer, the Austrian Breast Cancer Study Group, and the U.S. ALLIANCE Foundation. Patients diagnosed with stage II–III, hormone-receptor-positive, HER2/neu negative breast cancer within 12 months of diagnosis had completed all definitive therapy aside from endocrine therapy (started within 6 months prior to study entry) were eligible. All patients were required to submit a formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumor block. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive standard adjuvant endocrine therapy (of physicians’ choice) for at least 5 years with or without 2 years of palbociclib, administered orally at a starting dose of 125 mg daily, given for 21 days followed by a 7-day break. Results A total of 5,796 patients with HR + /HER2- early breast cancer (including 1,010 with stage IIA) were enrolled. Median follow-up was 50 months for stage IIA patients and 43.1 months overall. In the stage IIA cohort, 4-year iDFS in the palbociclib arm was 92.9% versus 92.1% for ET alone (HR 0.75, 95%CI 0.48–1.19, p = 0.23). There was no differential benefit by histologic grade, chemotherapy receipt, age, or anatomic/clinical risk. Additionally, no benefit to palbociclib was seen in this cohort in invasive breast cancer-free survival (iBCFS), locoregional relapse-free survival (LRFS), distant relapse-free survival (DRFS), or overall survival (OS). For the stage IIB/III patients, 4-year iDFS was 85.3% for palbociclib + ET versus 83.6% for ET alone (HR 0.91, 95% CI 0.77–1.07, p = 0.24). Conclusions and relevance While there were substantial differences in outcome for stage IIA versus IIB/III patients at 4 years of follow-up, the addition of 2 years of palbociclib did not improve outcomes for patients, regardless of stage. Most research on emotions and behaviors in science education has used observational or declarative methods. These approaches present certain strengths, but they have important limitations for deepening our understanding of the affective domain. In this work, we develop a method for analyzing the dynamics of affective variables during an inquiry-based activity with an artificial intelligence system that recognizes facial expressions. Although the study was carried out on 12 students, here we analyze data from one person to describe the method in detail. The videos were processed with a software which outputs behavioral and emotional signals. To analyze them, we applied centered moving averages with different widths. This allowed us to align and interpret the dynamics of emotional, behavioral, and learning actions. We found spikes of Surprise when the student seemingly implemented their models, and their predictions were not met. Our analysis suggests the existence of four phases in the inquiry-based activity with specific dynamic profiles. This work lays the foundations for researchers and teachers to develop tools to monitor emotions and behaviors.

This study describes the process of co-developing an operational climate forecast service for the viticulture sector. Weather and climate conditions affect grapevine development in cultivars: anticipating the atmospheric variables in the coming weeks and months is thus relevant for effectively managing vineyards, as impacts will be felt in wine production, biodiversity, and a wide range of related aspects. The operational service was co-developed with two types of users: impact modellers, who are the intermediary users incorporating climate forecast outputs in phenological and disease models, and end-users from the wine sector with vineyards in various European locations. For the operational service, sub-seasonal and seasonal climate forecasts were tailored considering their needs. The initial steps of the co-production process identified relevant decisions for which the service was essential and co-defined effective ways to deliver the climate information. Afterwards the climate forecasts outputs were integrated with impact model data. Substantial efforts were directed at the harmonisation of climate services information with the decision-making system of end-users. Because end-users need to navigate, comprehend, and select from various alternative options amidst uncertainty, significant emphasis has been placed on crafting the visual representation of the climate service, incorporating interactive elements, and cognitive considerations, thereby enhancing the overall user experience. Practical implications: Weather and climate conditions affect the development of cultivars: phenological stages, disease risk, or wine quality. This study presents the co-production process for deploying a climate service for vineyard management. The service consists of the near-real-time operational provision of sub-seasonal and seasonal climate forecasts. This service aims to help vineyard managers make decisions by anticipating the climate conditions up to three months in advance for a set of essential climate variables. The service includes the requirements of a set of intermediary users, which are disease risk and phenology researchers who feed their impact models with the provided climate forecasts. To our knowledge, it is the first time that sub-seasonal and seasonal climate forecasts have been integrated into an operational service for vineyard management.The service was developed during the VitiGEOSS project, the primary outcome of which is the VitiGEOSS platform: a single entry-point solution for wine producers aiming to boost vineyard sustainability. Three pilot plots are used for the service development: the Douro region in Portugal, the Catalonia region in Spain, and the Campania region in Italy. The co-production is seen as an iterative, interactive and collaborative process that brings together a plurality of knowledge sources to mutually define problems and develop usable products to address these problems. The process can be divided into three phases: initial co-exploration, co-design and co-development.The co-exploration phase consisted of conducting a benchmark analysis, identifying available services to viticulture and highlighting the gap that the newly developed solution could fill in. In the co-design phase, more intense engagement methods were implemented to communicate the capabilities of climate forecasts and design the product’s visualisation. Finally, the co-evaluation consisted of an ad hoc and ongoing process during the recurring meetings and a final workshop conducted with direct and potential users to obtain feedback on using the platform and potential further developments.As a result, the operational post-processing workflow of the sub-seasonal and seasonal state-of-the-art model outputs was adapted to include users’ requirements. The workflow includes the downscaling of model outputs to increase their spatial resolution, the storage of sub-seasonal climate forecasts at daily frequencies to feed phenological impact models, the provision of past climate simulations to train the impact models, the bias-adjust of climate forecasts to reduce systematic model errors, the assessment of the climate forecasts to aware users on their quality and the deployment of a server to allow access to impact modellers.The variables provided are mean, minimum and maximum temperature, accumulated precipitation and solar radiation. The final co-designed product consists of a graphic of bars. The user can select the location and variable, and the forecasts for the next four weeks or the next three months are displayed for the sub-seasonal and seasonal climate forecasts, respectively. For each week or month, three bars show the tercile probabilities of above-normal, normal or below-normal conditions for the time of the year. The limits of the tercile categories are also displayed, which helps to understand the averaged values of the variable in the selected region and the time of the year calculated with information from the past. The probabilities of extremes, i.e. exceeding (non-exceeding) the percentile 90th (10th), are displayed as extra bars for each week and month in case the prediction is skilful and they are greater than 40%.Last but not least, the results of the skill assessment are shown. This skill assessment consists of calculating a metric for each location, initialisation date and forecast time. When this metric, known as skill score, is positive (negative), the climate model forecast is better (worse) than the climatology (the climatology is a naive forecast which considers all categories equiprobable by definition). If the skill is negative, which means there is no proof of the added value of using the numerical model prediction, the bars are blurred, and the user can still be informed of the tercile category limits.The service has been provided for almost two consecutive years. During this period, we have confirmed the value of some key recommendations from literature when co-producing a climate service. Especially relevant is the need to invest time and resources to conduct a good co-production process by repeating the iterative process. We also tested the idea of providing information in the format of seasonal climate forecast outlooks to end-users before the service was operational. In this way, the climate service process would be ‘slowed down’, by which the use of climate data is incorporated more slowly and allows for place-based knowledge from the resource managers to be included too.One of the most challenging questions is the communication of the probabilistic forecasts product and their quality. The probabilistic nature of climate forecasts is sometimes understood by novice users as the incapacity to provide a deterministic forecast. Similarly, negative skill leads users to interpret the forecast fails. Overall, the perception of the service quality can be low. To avoid this perception, the co-producing process is essential to engage with users and redefine the service if possible.In this work, we have tried different ways to overcome low-quality perception. The users requested access to the climate forecasts for their vineyard plots. For that reason, the downscaling technique was applied to increase the spatial resolution, and the bar plots were designed to show the forecast for a specific location. However, to improve the perception of the forecast quality, the forecast can be contextualised by providing the forecast in the format of a map of the surrounding areas.Despite all these limitations, end-users reported on the extreme importance of climate information. Furthermore, end-users can benefit from getting the climate services integrated with the impact models to take maximum advantage of all services and make timely decisions, but also receiving this information in a clear, parsimonious and direct format that is intuitive and can be easily incorporated into the decision-making processes is key for the sustainability of their farm fields.After the operational provision of the climate forecast service, some implications of our findings have been detected: ● Combined downscaling and contextualisation. Downscaling techniques help to provide more accurate information at the location scale. Nevertheless, the spatial visualization over large regions may help to contextualize the climate forecasts, and that is also beneficial for end-user interpretation of the climate-related information. ● Skill. Efforts to provide more skilful climate forecasts are required, as well as alternative information to be used in situations where skill is lacking (e.g.: past climate information). The skill assessment is crucial to inform users about forecast reliability and accuracy. It enhances user understanding and trust in the service by generating realistic expectations. ● Operationalisation. Reducing the time for data processing or increasing the computational resources will allow the provision of climate forecasts that are closer to the date of production. Users will benefit from earlier access to the information than the current time-lapse. ● Co-production. The co-production process ensures the service is designed based on user needs and feedback which is more likely to be adopted and effectively utilized by users. This process never ends, so, it needs to be applied if future developments or requests are included in the current service. ● Support for sustainability. End-users benefit from the integration of the climate forecast along with phenological and disease risk services. Further explorations to include more climate variables in the service and in the impact models will be beneficial for end-users. For instance, the probabilities of extreme events help vineyard managers prepare for potential adverse conditions, while, safeguarding vineyards against weather impacts through proactive measures. ● Capacity building. By training users about the nature of climate forecasts, they can enhance the preparedness and resilience response to varying climate conditions. New information and products could be co-explored to co-evaluate their utility and usefulness.

Abstract Impulse control disorders and their consequences display variability among individuals, indicating potential involvement of environmental and genetic factors. In this retrospective study, we analyzed a cohort of Parkinson's disease patients treated with dopamine agonists and investigated the influence of the dopamine D4 receptor gene polymorphism, DRD4 7R+, which is linked to psychiatric disorders, impulsive traits, and addictive behaviors. We found that DRD4 7R+ is a significant genetic risk factor associated with the severity of ICD.

Do pre-service teachers have the same beliefs in superstitions and pseudoscience as the members of their generation? We expect so, because they are slightly different in at least two of the variables that explain differences, namely family income and level of studies, and also, normatively, because beliefs among teaching staff appear to be a key matter in the scientific literacy of citizens. In this work, we compare data from the general public of the same age to our sample of 578 pre-service teachers from five Spanish universities, using the same questionnaire. Multivariate regression analysis is then used to study the factors that affect defence of such beliefs and the differences between pre-service teachers and their age group. We have found that, on the contrary to what was expected, beliefs among pre-service teachers are not far from those of their age group in the population at large. Within that relatively homogenous group, a favourable attitude toward pseudoscience and superstition mainly depends on their educational level and basic knowledge of science, but that knowledge probably depends on their spontaneous interest in scientific matters and a prior favourable attitude. These results have implications in training scientific teachers and in the scientific literacy of the population. Thus, we must consider such non-scientific beliefs when designing classroom proposals and when communicating scientific content in social contexts.

El objetivo de este estudio es examinar en qué ámbitos de la vida diaria identifican 250 estudiantes del grado de Educación Primaria la presencia de la ciencia y valorar cómo piensan que esta debe intervenir. De sus respuestas iniciales se establecieron tres categorías: escenarios donde hay ciencia, finalidades y límites de la ciencia. En su reflexión final, tras un debate, se observó un aumento significativo en el número de respuestas, tanto en escenarios (entre los que destacan salud, tecnología, medio ambiente y alimentación) como en finalidades y límites vinculados con la participación de la ciencia en la vida de los ciudadanos. La incorporación de este tipo de actividades en la formación de maestros podría ayudar a mejorar la identificación de contextos sociocientíficos, siendo esta circunstancia un aspecto deseable dentro de su conocimiento didáctico del contenido (CDC).

Empezamos como profesoras a tiempo completo en la universidad. Una en R.D. otra en MAD, nos separan un océano y el Caribe. Es la primera vez que estamos a tiempo completo en la academia, por eso tenemos ilusión aunque tenemos más de treinta y cinco años y a esa edad no se tienen ya tantas ilusiones, nos lo llevan diciendo desde pequeñitas: “el fuego, tanto el amoroso como el vital, se apaga con los años” o al menos debería. Este es un intento de escritura desplazada. Como todo intento probablemente contiene en su gesto inicial ya cierta tendencia al fracaso, a instalarse en él como posibilidad de ser. Ser otra escritura que, aún en lo académico, reniega y pervierte lo académico mismo e imagina otro tipo de escrituras, atravesadas por el cuerpo y el deseo. Como intento, este borrador intercala y pone en diálogo distintos registros escritos (amorosos, laborales, cotidianos), cuya escritura es producida por manos que se desean, se tocan, se acarician, se aman, pero que ahora se viven en la distancia y se enredan en una escritura marcada, precisamente, por esa distancia geográfica. También dialoga con esas muchas otras que leemos y que nos acompañan. Podríamos decir que escribimos este texto con el objetivo de cuestionar la academia y sus escrituras normativas, podríamos decir que lo escribimos para sacarle los colores a esa academia que nos expulsa, pero que se nutre de nosotras, de nuestras precariedades, de nuestros ritmos hiperproductivos y de nuestro deseo que soterrado y vestido de uniforme, late y produce papers. En este texto lo que hay es ese deseo pero en bruto y sin formateo. Nuestro último escrito a cuatro manos no salió bien, o sí, fue el Decálogo de ideas para una escuela feminista, tuvo mucho eco, como un grito en una cueva. Recibimos muchas críticas por ello, críticas anónimas, sin cuerpo, hacia nuestros cuerpos que escriben, que sienten, que disienten, y que imaginan que las escrituras, y los espacios en los que se producen, pueden ser otras, y, sobre todo, pueden compartirse con otras.

In the municipality of La Granja d’Escarp, for over thirty years, an important natural cement factory was in operation. In 1876, the Girona family, who were businessmen and bankers from Barcelona, opened the factory with modern industrial facilities. It included kilns, mills, and crushers, alongside warehouses, a small railway for internal transportation of the various materials used, and even a housing area for workers. The neighboring Ebro River allowed distribution by river transport at first. Later, with the use of railways, transport to consumption points was possible. This industrial complex became a center of significant importance in Catalonia in the production of cement, which was used for building hydraulic and civil works. During the first decade of the twentieth century, the factory stopped its activity and the facilities were abandoned. Nowadays, this industrial heritage site is in a state of neglect, without any kind of protection or maintenance. In turn, this has caused the collapse of some buildings in recent times and the loss of historical value of the architectural ensemble. We have carried out initial geomatic research, which has highlighted the constructive properties of the kilns. We have also tested five samples from different buildings using XRD and TGA/DSC, which showed the use of lime mortars in their construction. This is the first study to be carried out at this site, with the aim of showing the historical importance of the ensemble. The goal of the study was to highlight the value of this industrial heritage site and illustrate that it was once a pioneer in the production of natural cement and a driving force for Catalonia.

The dataset provides data obtained with eye-tracking while 55 volunteers solved 3 distinct neuropsychological tests on a screen inside a closed room. Among the 55 volunteers, 22 were women and 33 were men, all with ages ranging between 9 and 50, and 5 of whom were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) [1]. The eye-tracker used for the collection of the data was an EyeTribe, which has a sampling rate of 60 Hz and an average visual angle between 0.5 and 1, which correspond to an on-screen error between 0.5 and 1cm (0.1969 to 0.393 inches aprox) respectively, when the distance to the user is around 60cm (23.62 in) [2], which was the case during the collection of these data. The neuropsychological tests were implemented in a software named NEURO-INNOVA KIDS® [3], which are the following: a domino test adapted from the D-48 intelligence test [4], an adaptation of the MASMI test consisting of unfolded cubes [5], the figures series completion test adapted from [6], and the Poppelreuter figures test [7]. Before each of the tests, a calibration process was performed, ensuring that the visual angle error was less than or equal to 0.5 cm (0.1969 in), which is considered an acceptable calibration. The collective mean duration of the four administered tests amounted to 20 minutes. This dataset exhibits significant promise for potential utilization due to the extensive prevalence of these neuropsychological assessments among healthcare practitioners for evaluating diverse cognitive faculties in individuals. Moreover, it has been empirically established that poor performance on these tests is associated with attention deficits [8].

Este artículo se enfoca en la teoría de la racionalidad de Jon Elster, particularmente en su aplicación en contextos democráticos y deliberativos. Se destaca la importancia del diseño institucional para fomentar la racionalidad y la transparencia en la toma colectiva de decisiones, enfatizando la protección de las competencias epistémicas y la prevención de sesgos cognitivos. El objetivo central es presentar la concepción de racionalidad de Elster y su articulación en el diseño institucional, específicamente en el contexto de decisiones políticas, resaltando la importancia de instituciones efectivas para promover la racionalidad y la transparencia en entornos democráticos. Este análisis contribuye a una comprensión más profunda de cómo estas dinámicas influyen en la eficacia de los procesos de deliberación, brindando una perspectiva sobre la relación entre la racionalidad, la toma colectiva de decisiones y el diseño institucional en la esfera política.

Este estudio descriptivo presenta una amplia experiencia clínica en el tratamiento de músculos aberrantes alrededor de la mano por medio de 23 casos clínicos con imágenes de enorme interés, dada la baja incidencia de estas afecciones. De todos ellos se registraron sus manifestaciones clínicas específicas. Los músculos supernumerarios que se hallaron fueron: extensor digitorum brevis manus (EDBM), extensor propio del dedo medio, músculos palmares aberrantes, flexor carpi radialis brevis (FCRB) y músculo abductor digiti minimi aberrante (ADMa).

Las emociones que se producen en los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje en ciencias experimentales presentan cuestiones todavía por resolver. En este artículo, hemos utilizado un método paramétrico que usa el reconocimiento facial y permite identificar las emociones en tiempo real y vincularlas con acciones educativas concretas. Se diseñó una actividad para hacer aflorar las emociones en un proceso en el que las conjeturas iniciales colisionaban con los hechos. El análisis muestra cambios muy intensos en las expresiones emocionales de los estudiantes y la existencia de tres tipos de comportamiento frente a esta disonancia entre previsiones y observación: 1) sorpresa; 2) disgusto; y 3) solapamiento de sorpresa y disgusto. Parece especialmente interesante considerar qué emociones específicas genera cada situación de aprendizaje para cada individuo.

The starting point of this research is the urban model promoted by the United Nations through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The importance of public spaces is especially highlighted in Goal 11.7: “provide universal access to safe, inclusive, and accessible, green, and public spaces …” The quality of public spaces can be properly assessed by reconsidering the quality indicators and investigating their development potential, which is the main focus of our research. This study is based on a theoretical and methodological reflection on the quality of public space, considering the contributions of some contemporary urban traditions and a few recent experiences. From this perspective, a variety of public space projects developed in the European sphere have been selected and analyzed. The quality parameters identified in this initial analysis were then applied to the analysis of nine representative case studies in three Spanish cities (Madrid, Barcelona, and Zaragoza). The main goal is to propose a methodology that helps to evaluate the quality of those public spaces and determine its relationship with the safety, accessibility, and inclusiveness conditions they offer.
