Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductors (HTSs), most efforts of researchers have been focused on the fabrication of superconducting devices capable of immobilizing vortices, hence of operating at enhanced temperatures and magnetic fields. Recent findings that geometric restrictions may induce self-arresting hypervortices recovering the dissipation-free state at high fields and temperatures made superconducting strips a mainstream of superconductivity studies. Here we report on the geometrical melting of the vortex lattice in a wide YBCO submicron bridge preceded by magnetoresistance (MR) oscillations fingerprinting the underlying regular vortex structure. Combined magnetoresistance measurements and numerical simulations unambiguously relate the resistance oscillations to the penetration of vortex rows with intermediate geometrical pinning and uncover the details of geometrical melting. Our findings offer a reliable and reproducible pathway for controlling vortices in geometrically restricted nanodevices and introduce a novel technique of geometrical spectroscopy, inferring detailed information of the structure of the vortex system through a combined use of MR curves and large-scale simulations.

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are an effective means to pump fluids through microchannel arrays within fully portable systems. The SAW-driven acoustic counterflow pumping process relies on a cascade phenomenon consisting of SAW transmission through the microchannel, SAW-driven fluid atomization, and subsequent coalescence. Here, we investigate miniaturization of device design, and study both SAW transmission through microchannels and the onset of SAW-driven atomization up to the ultra-high-frequency regime. Within the frequency range from 47.8 MHz to 754 MHz, we show that the acoustic power required to initiate SAW atomization remains constant, while transmission through microchannels is most effective when the channel widths w greater than or similar to 10 lambda, where lambda is the SAW wavelength. By exploiting the enhanced SAW transmission through narrower channels at ultra-high frequencies, we discuss the relevant frequency-dependent length scales and demonstrate the scaling down of internal flow patterns and discuss their impact on device miniaturization strategies. The development of quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) operating at terahertz frequencies (THz) is proceeding at a very rapid pace. For their successful practical implementation, specific requirements have now to be addressed, particularly concerning the spectral properties of the emitted radiation. Single-mode THz lasers with external cavity have been achieved. Optical self-mixing has been observed in THz QCLs in the presence of an external cavity for insight into the linewidth enhancement.

Resonant transport is demonstrated in a hybrid superconductor-semiconductor heterostructure junction grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs. This heterostructure realizes the model system introduced by de Gennes and Saint-James in 1963 [P. G. de Gennes and D. Saint-James, Phys. Lett. 4, 151 (1963)]. At low temperatures a single marked resonance peak is shown superimposed to the characteristic Andreev-dominated subgap conductance. The observed magnetotransport properties are successfully analyzed within the random matrix theory of quantum transport, and ballistic effects are included by directly solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations.

The introduction of modern growth techniques such as molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has made possible the realization of a large variety of artificially tailored semiconductor heterostructures in which both composition and doping can be controlled on a scale of the order of the electronic wavelength. The resulting effects (quantum size effects) are the object of intense research efforts whose goal is twofold. On one hand, the new freedom in engineering the electronic states and their properties is exploited in the creation of new devices (quantum devices) which offer an exciting potential for electronic applications. On the other hand, these structures are a powerful tool for the investigation of new quantum phenomena. Several reviews on the various aspects of this exciting field have appeared in the literature both for what concerns the device aspects, and the more fundamental aspects.(1,2)

Catalyst-assisted growth of semiconductor nanowires has opened up several new and exciting possibilities for low-dimensional semiconductor structures. The authors review progress on the realization of quantum dots in semiconductor nanowires, and their characterization by transport spectroscopy. Emphasis is placed on the wide range electronic properties exhibited due to flexibility of the growth process in terms of nanostructure composition and size. Particular attention is placed on studies of spin in few-electron quantum dots.

Resonant tunnelling (RT) through semiconductor double barriers (DB’s) was first demonstrated by Chang et al. [7.1] in 1974. With the development of modern crystal growth techniques, like molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), there has been renewed interest in the subject in recent years [7.2–23]. Material quality has improved to the point that negative differential resistance (NDR) can be observed at room temperature [7.2]. Intense research efforts are directed towards the optimization of the performances of the RT DB’s and their utilization as the building blocks of novel electronic and optical devices.

A new field-effect transistor with a resonant-tunneling barrier in the gate is presented. The gate and the drain currents versus gate voltage exhibit peaks when the resonant-tunneling gate current is quenched. Thus, in addition to negative differential resistance, this structure also exhibits negative transconductance, a unique feature in an n-channel device. Also, by proper gate bias, the same resonance of the double barrier can be used to produce two peaks in the drain current versus drain voltage characteristic at nearly the same current level. This is a very desirable feature for many applications.

We report the observation of resonant tunneling effects at high applied fields in a multiple quantum-well P-I-N diode. The Al0.48In0.52As/Ga0.47In0.53As structure shows features in the dark current due to Zener tunneling of electrons from the lowest sub-band in a valence-band quantum well to the first and second sub-bands of an adjacent conduction-band well.

High critical temperature superconductors (HTS) based devices can have impact in the study of the phase dynamics of Josephson junctions (JJs) thanks to the wide range of junction parameters they offer and to their unconventional properties. Measurements of current-voltage characteristics and of switching current distributions constitute a direct way to classify different regimes of the phase dynamics and of the transport, also in nontrivial case of the moderately damped regime (MDR). MDR is going to be more and more common in JJs with advances in nanopatterning superconductors and synthesizing novel hybrid systems. Distinctive signatures of macroscopic quantum tunneling and of thermal activation in presence of different tunable levels of dissipation have been detected in YBCO grain boundary JJs. Experimental data are supported by Monte Carlo simulations of the phase dynamics, in a wide range of temperatures and dissipation levels. This allows us to quantify dissipation in the MDR and partially reconstruct a phase diagram as guideline for a wide range of moderately damped systems. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We employ simple geometrical rules to design a set of nanotopographies able to interfere with focal adhesion establishment during neuronal differentiation. Exploiting nanoimprint lithography techniques on cyclic-olefin-copolymer films, we demonstrate that by varying a single topographical parameter the orientation and maturation of focal adhesions can be finely modulated yielding independent control over the final number and the outgrowth direction of neurites. Taken together, this report provides a novel and promising approach to the rational design of biocompatible textured substrates for tissue engineering applications.

We present a novel technique for the realization of suspended Josephson junctions based on InAs semiconductor nanowires. The devices are assembled using a technique of drop-casting guided by dielectrophoresis that allows to finely align the nanostructures on top of the electrodes. The proposed architecture removes the interaction between the nanowire and the substrate which is known to influence disorder and the orientation of the Rashba vector. The relevance of this approach in view of the implementation of Josephson junctions based on High-Temperature Superconductors is discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We investigate a new architecture for the implementation of Josephson junctions combining high critical temperature superconductors (HTS) and semiconductor (Sm) nanowires (NWs). The devices are obtained starting from pre-patterned YBaCuO (YBCO) electrodes and assembling suspended InAs-NWs bridges between nearby superconductive banks. Such a non-standard approach is necessary in the case of HTS since growth conditions for cuprates are incompatible with thermal stability of the Sm nanostructures. We investigate the device behavior as a function of the length L of the InAs bridge. For L > 200 nm, all junctions display a tendency to insulation at low temperatures. For L ∼ 200 nm, a metallic-like behavior is obtained, signaling the possible onset of a superconductive transition of the junction. Technological limitations on the width of the gap separating the YBCO banks currently prevent a further scaling. Our results suggest that a further reduction of the size of the trench between the YBCO electrodes can lead to functional YBCO/InAs-NWs/YBCO Josephson junctions.

We have developed a fabrication process that allows us to realize pure YBCO nanowires displaying robust superconductivity at widths w as low as 160 nm. We can modify the process in order to maintain a Au protective layer. This allows us to scale our nanowires even further to widths as low as 50 nm. We have studied how the presence of vortices and the occurrence of phase slips affect the transport properties of nanowires in the width range xi < w < lambda, being xi the coherence length and lambda the magnetic penetration depth. Magnetoresistance curves present features which are related to the effect of screening currents. Vortex entry barrier is found to scale with the width. Our findings confirm that for widths xi < w < lambda nanowires are better protected against phase slips and vortex flow. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Spatiotemporal image correlation spectroscopy (STICS) is a simple and powerful technique, well established as a tool to probe protein dynamics in cells. Recently, its potential as a tool to map velocity fields in lab-on-a-chip systems was discussed. However, the lack of studies on its performance has prevented its use for microfluidics applications. Here, we systematically and quantitatively explore STICS microvelocimetry in microfluidic devices. We exploit a simple experimental setup, based on a standard bright-field inverted microscope (no fluorescence required) and a high-fps camera, and apply STICS to map liquid flow in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannels. Our data demonstrates optimal 2D velocimetry up to 10 mm/s flow and spatial resolution down to 5 ?m. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

We report on the study of the phase dynamics of high critical temperature superconductor Josephson junctions. We realized YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) grain boundary (GB) biepitaxial junctions in the submicron scale, using low loss substrates, and analyzed their dissipation by comparing the transport measurements with Monte Carlo simulations. The behavior of the junctions can be fitted using a model based on two quality factors, which results in a frequency dependent damping. Moreover, our devices can be designed to have Josephson energy of the order of the Coulomb energy. In this unusual energy range, phase delocalization strongly influences the device's dynamics, promoting the transition to a quantum phase diffusion regime. We study the signatures of such a transition by combining the outcomes of Monte Carlo simulations with the analysis of the device's parameters, the critical current and the temperature behavior of the low voltage resistance $R_0$., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Proximity-effect and resistance magneto-fluctuations measurements in submicron Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3Oz (NBCO) nano-loops are reported to investigate coherent charge transport in the non-superconducting state. We find an unexpected inhibition of cooper pair transport, and a destruction of the induced superconductivity, by lowering the temperature from 6K to 250mK. This effect is accompanied by a significant change in the conductance-voltage characteristics and in the zero bias conductance response to the magnetic field pointing to the activation of a strong pair breaking mechanism at lower temperature. The data are discussed in the framework of mesoscopic effects specific to superconducting nanostructures, proximity effect and high temperature superconductivity., to appear on new journal of Physics

YBaCuO nanowires were reproducibly fabricated down to widths of 50 nm. A Au/Ti cap layer on YBCO yielded high electrical performance up to temperatures above 80 K in single nanowires. Critical current density of tens of MA/cm2 at T = 4.2 K and of 10 MA/cm2 at 77 K were achieved that survive in high magnetic fields. Phase-slip processes were tuned by choosing the size of the nanochannels and the intensity of the applied external magnetic field. Data indicate that YBCO nanowires are rather attractive system for the fabrication of efficient sensors, supporting the notion of futuristic THz devices., 8 pages, 3 figures. In this work, we investigated the magnetotransport properties of a two dimensional electron gas hosted in an AlGaN/AlN/GaN heterostructure and one-dimensional devices fabricated on it. At cryogenic temperature, high mobility and long mean free path is achieved, allowing ballistic transport experiments. Longitudinal resistivity measured in Hall bar geometry shows well-developed Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations with amplitude modulation. Amongst possible mechanisms, the zero-field spin splitting may be the origin of the observed effects. Split gate quantum point contacts were fabricated by electron beam lithography. Linear conductance measurements at zero magnetic field show clear quantized conductance plateaus at 2e 2/h and 4e 2/h. Non-perfectly quantized conductance values are found for higher plateaus, suggesting the presence of impurity scattering.

The properties of single submicron high-temperature superconductor (HTS) rings are investigated. The Little-Parks effect is observed and is accompanied by an anomalous behavior of the magnetic dependence of the resistance, which we ascribe to non-uniform vorticity (superfluid angular momentum) within the ring arms. This effect is linked to the peculiar HTS-relationship between the values of the coherence length and the London penetration depth., 14 pages, 3 figures
